3 out of 5 stars Too "religious".......2007-03-10

This book gave me food for thought. However it was "too religious" for me and the general population. It was a little "blaming" of the left-out spouse.

5 out of 5 stars Common sence.......2006-03-20

I felt this book was well planned. The research and insight was eye opening and helpful. I now see quite a bit of inner strength to see this situation through to the end. Even if he does continue on with the divorce, as I was told as recently as yesterday, nothing is set in stone. Changes in myself have already caused changes in my husband which he is very surprized and confused by. With what I have learned and God's help, this situation can be turned around.

2 out of 5 stars Better books exist.......2000-03-12

Since the break up of our 6 year relationship I have purchased many books. This one was not as helpful as the others because the information was very introductory and not deep enough. It seemed like the book is saying that God is the answer to saving the marriage. Maybe true, but I was hoping for a book with more deep psychological analysis. I recommend the books "Letting Go" by Dr. Tracy Cabot, and "Make Up Don't Break Up" by Dr. Bonnie Eaker Weil.

3 out of 5 stars Not a realistic approach.......2000-02-14

I felt that parts of this book were very valuable. However, I felt that following its advice in every case would compromise self-respect, especially in cases where the "exiting spouse" was having an affair. NOBODY should have to put up with that kind of behavior in a marriage and I think this book encourages more tolerance and patience when dealing with infidelity than is appropriate or smart. Sometimes, in cases of infidelity, it's best to move on. God may hate divorce, but I don't think He expects people to hang on to (or wait for) an unfaithful spouse and just take perpetual abuse. It may not be physical abuse, but it IS emotional abuse. There is a time to get out and move on. This book left me feeling like the author thinks all decisions are up to the unfaithful spouse. That is not a healthy response. I would read this book, but read it with your brain in gear and think your situation through for yourself! Don't blindly stay in a bad marriage or tolerate an unfaithful spouse just because this book has that outlook.

5 out of 5 stars The most helpful book I read when going through a dark time........2000-02-04

This book gives step-by-step guidelines for coping with a spouse who wants out of your marriage. It helps you understand your own feelings about betrayal and guides you to act in ways that minimize the chances of the break being permanent. Helpful, comforting, and extremely informative. In my opinion, its the best of the dozens of books on saving a marriage that are available. Without a doubt, it saved my marriage.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Provocative, appealing and controversial.......2006-08-02

Fomenko has succeeded to convincingly demonstrate the misconception about what "history" factually is... It is fiction and -like we can read and judge for ourselves- no science. It indeed is "make belief" only. I "discovered" Fomenko while studying the "old" history of Al Andaluz, Spain. Having found too many contradictions in available data, having seen too many forgeries as to pretend the importance of christianity for its decline, I ventured out to find Fomenko, who convinced me that we know little if anything for sure of the epoch before the XI-century. However, the integration of the Arabic-Islamic cultural history into the heavily distorted Western fails... There are some attempts to fit "the budding new religion" (Islam) into Fomenko's scheme, but they are too weak to be taken seriously and too often focussing on Turkey as the region where things started to influence the West, which is untrue at all.
Islam certainly was no "new religion" in the X-century. That the highly cultivated Al Andaluz ruler Mohammed-I could have been "mirrored" down in time into some myth about the "illiterate" founder of Islam itself is highly speculative. Nevertheless, Fomenko convinces me about the processes that were involved in forging a christian history. Intriguing and controversial as his books are, I recommend them as to rethink our current position in time and space and simply verify what was claimed. It is a "good" book, but not for bedtime reading... Mundus vult decipi, the world wants to be cheated. Fomenko's readers will understand why.

5 out of 5 stars pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.......2006-02-16

Traces of white wine were found in Tutankhamen's tomb however there were no record of white wine in Egypt until the 3rd century AD, 1600 years after the young pharaoh died according to the traditional chronology. http://www.newscientist.com/channel/being-human/mg18925395.400
It can be interpreted as a contribution towards New Chronology theory that pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.

My 6 year old loves this, and so do I! The illustrations in this book are amazing and I love that it's interactive with my child. We love to find all the items listed then go back through for the things we may have missed.

Great book!

5 out of 5 stars Just beautiful!.......2007-03-20

I was at Walmart and noticed this book. I love fairies so I had to look at it. I fell in love with the beautiful artwork and detail. It is a must for fairy lovers!

5 out of 5 stars An excellant introduction into the world of fantasy.......2007-02-11

My daughter received this book and a Tinker Bell doll for her fifth birthday and it was a major hit. The illustrations are beautiful and the individual character details are delightful. My daughter loves to read about each of the five fairies featured and then open each coordinating section to a poster size view of the individual fairies' "rooms" in the Home Tree (where fairies live in Pixie Hollow). Since then, we have purchased several other fairy books as she enjoys the character development. This is a solid investment for any little girl who believes in magic.

4 out of 5 stars Viewed in a bookstore.......2006-11-09

My 6 year old loves Tinkerbell and while at a bookstore, I saw this book. I was quite tempted to buy it, but figured Amazon would have a better price. It is a very pretty book, I believe there are 5 fairies described in the book, each has its own page with a little story. Then the page opens up into a 4 page poster of what that fairy's home looks like. I really liked the artwork, quite colorful, and it is a Disney book so Tinkerbell was included. For the price, I think it is worth it, but it isn't a big book, only 10 pages, but you do get 5 nice big 'posters' inside (non-removable posters).

Ho's easy, humorous tone makes the advice accessible and fun to read. Every aspect of domestic life is addressed--cooking, entertaining, decorating, cleaning, organizing, gardening, and maintenance, and, of course, simply being.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Follow the spirit not the letter of advice.......2007-05-27

While I found the concept Dan is selling--"gai" as true style--refreshing and compelling, I was puzzled by several sections in the book where he spent much time/effort/space trying to tell his readers what they should or should not be doing in order to have authentic style...my understanding of his philosophy was that we should do what resonates for us, yet he felt compelled to make sure that we understood that kitchen canisters (among other things) are terrible things that are not "gai." While I agree that buying something just because it is "in style" is not the way to be authentically stylish, it does not mean that any one product can't be part of a person's authentic style if they have a personal motivation behind using it.
Bottom line--if you are looking for an alternative to the "style" magazines and TV shows that will help you make your house a home and your life more authentic, check out this book, but remember to absorb the spirit of what he is saying, ignore the declarations about various items, and make up your own mind about what is "gai" for you.

5 out of 5 stars I love him! .......2007-05-12

Dan Ho breathes new life into the style/decorating/DIY/self help genre. He pumps you up, giving readers permission to enjoy the important things in life, rather than waste valuable time creating the perfect craft room or hunting down useless kitchen gadgets at culinary boutiques. I appreciate his positive, no nonsense approach and value his humourous, helpful insights!
You go Gai!

For a habitual HGTV watcher like myself, Dan Ho is a bit of a shock. He advocates against painting your walls red and lining up all your pictures, just so, above the sofa. Personally he minimized his possessions, moved into a smaller space and says we all work too hard trying to be in style.
His book tells us how to let go of the idea that possessions lead to perfection. I'd think we would all realize by now that having-it-all leads instead to messiness. If you own a book on clutter or getting organized, then you know what I'm talking about.
I haven't seen his new show yet, but after having my eyes opened by his book, I want to hear more from this man. He says we just need to relax and tap into who we really are and that's style.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just the "Anti-Martha".......2006-10-26

I only recently became aware of Dan Ho after he was featured in the NYTimes. Wow, what a great book. If you have long sensed that you want to "simplify" your domestic life but either had a hard time figuring out how or, especially, couldn't reconcile having to pitch your "style" this book will provide a great foundation and tons of motivation to help you on your journey. The unexpected bonus - when you apply his principles of "Gai" you reconnect with your domestic life, which positively affects all other aspects of your life. This book explains that you are not giving up style by eliminating the glut in your life. Just the opposite. You are finding true style which resonates with the loved ones in your life and yourself at the core. I read the book in one sitting and will read it again and again. Thank you Dan Ho!

5 out of 5 stars A Must-have for staying sane in a busy world- and great for gifts.......2007-05-22

This book was so helpful... quick at-a-glance chapters on many topics. I am already an organized person and this still gave me great time-saving ideas. This is a great gift book as well.

5 out of 5 stars Super book for quick organizing ideas!.......2007-05-03

I've read tons of these books, yet even I learned something from this one. I got it because it looks great and I thought it would be easy to read, and I was right. The book is laid out well and the writing is clear. I've been able to easily implement many of the ideas successfully. Definitely put this book on your list if you appreciate clarity and interesting thoughts.

5 out of 5 stars Wise Advice for Anyone.......2007-01-02

What a great treasure to find right before the new year! This book filled me with inspiration from the first page. I found the advice intuitive and easy to implement - and not rigid. The author makes a variety of tasks seem easy by breaking them down in manageable steps. She has obviously worked with all kinds of clients. For those of you out there who are more 'creative' (read: not so organized), this is the perfect tool.

5 out of 5 stars Great Recipes for Your Body.......2006-10-16

This is a very good book if you enjoy pampering yourself and your body. You only have one; so take good care of it! The book has some great ideas and gives you an "in" to some very exciting secrets. This book is a real great source of ways to nourish your body. It will also make a great gift for anyone else that shares your passion.

4 out of 5 stars Relax With Secret of the Spas.......2006-02-03

This book is the perfect gift for girlfriends. It's organized really well and has many creative recipes and tips for skin and haircare. We've entertained the idea of having a "spa party" and using this book as a guide.

My only nit is that many of the ingredients are difficult to find, unless - of course - you have your own herb garden or a Whole Foods nearby. However, some of the recipes are simple and really work. Ideas range from the very easy - beating an egg white and using it as a face mask; to the more complex - mixing several oils, pulverizing herbs and refridgerating the mixture before using... Who has time for that - really?

5 out of 5 stars Secrets of the spas.......2005-08-26

This is a great book for ideas on making your own spa products

4 out of 5 stars Still enjoying it.......2005-07-25

I bought this book a couple of years ago and I am still using it. In fact, I have to hide it from my girlfriend so she can't borrow it. Well maybe I will just buy it for her as an Xmas present this year.

I especially love the Avocado Hand Scrub (pg 121).

4 out of 5 stars Soothing spa recipes.......2005-07-12

I like "Secrets of the Spas" very much because the recipes are easy and they work. It's also nice to treat yourself to something that's natural and as organic as you want to make it, so that you don't have to worry about chemical contents and preservatives in conventional spa products. I am a do-it-yourself kind of person and these recipes were fun and healthy. While it would be nice to have a slightly larger book, the small size fits nicely in your bag if you wish to take it with you when you travel or to the store.

Book Description

The definitive biography of Barbara Taylor Bradford, author of twenty-one top-of-the-lists blockbuster bestsellers, starting with A Woman of Substance

For the first time ever, take a fascinating look at the remarkable life of Barbara Taylor Bradford. Her first book, A Woman of Substance, is one of the bestselling novels of all time and has made her one of the most successful authors in the world. Yet her rise to fame and fortune was not an easy one.
Barbara came from humble beginnings in Yorkshire, the only daughter of a laborer and a nanny. From an early age, her mother Freda had marked her daughter out for glory---at any cost. This drive, ambition, and desire to triumph helped Barbara take the Yorkshire Evening Post and Fleet Street by storm. But her biggest achievement was undeniably A Woman of Substance. The novel’s unforgettable heroine, Emma Harte, was a powerful, success-fuelled woman whose rise from kitchen maid to international business woman was an inspiration to women the world over. Emma’s life is a testament to Barbara’s imagination but here, for the first time, Piers Dudgeon unearths amazing parallels in the lives of Barbara’s fictional characters and her real-life family. More remarkable still is that Barbara herself was previously completely unaware of these deeply buried secrets. In this incredible story, fact and fiction exist side by side and art unwittingly imitates life.
This is the first time Barbara Taylor Bradford has collaborated on a memoir of her amazing life. Full of revelations, it’s as absorbing a read as any one of her bestsellers.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars for fans of the author.......2006-11-17

This biography takes a close look at popular women's fiction novelist Barbara Taylor Bradford, who has sold over seventy million books since her first novel, A Woman of Substance was issued in 1979. Ms. Bradford was born in Leeds over seven decades ago into a relatively modest background. Yet her mother, a nanny expected great things from her; pushing her to succeed way beyond the daughter of a laborer or a nanny. Ms. Bradford does quite well at Fleet Street before marrying Bob Bradford and taking New York by storm. A Woman of Substance is the acme of her success feeding a mass of sequels and TV shows. This is a fascinating biography aimed at readers who enjoy British romantic fiction. Though Ms. Bradford is an interesting author, her fictionalized characters take charge of her bio as Piers Dudgeon takes his audience on tours of locales used by Ms. Bradford in her novels and compares those to the writer's home locations especially as a child. With over fifty illustrations to augment the text, fans of the author will appreciate this fine homage while others will pass.
