"Makeup should be fun, not fascist," celebrity makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin avers in Face Forward, his third book. One of the most adored stylists among fashionistas, entertainment divas, and high-society jet setters, Southern-born Aucoin arrived on the New York fashion scene in the early '80s, a period he ridicules for its '50s-era conservatism and McCarthyist us-against-them values. His career since has been motivated by the feel-good ideals of acceptance, diversity, and self-love, and the vain world of beauty has eagerly participated in his vision. While one may puzzle on how it is he finds fulfillment in an industry known for its superficiality and elitism, Aucoin's words are nonetheless infectious and the touches of his brushes inspired.

Conceived as an exploration of the past, present, and future of beauty, Face Forward is an ingenious showcase of the transformative, creative possibilities of makeup, with portraits of everyone from Julia Roberts to Sharon Stone, Martha Stewart to his mother, Thelma. His crafted visages range from minimal-application makeovers of friends to elaborate re-creations of such Hollywood icons as Audrey Hepburn (Calista Flockhart), James Dean (Gwyneth Paltrow), and Veronica Lake (shockingly, Martha Stewart) and such pop-culture personalities as Cher (socialite Alexandra von Furstenberg) and Siouxsie Sioux (Winona Ryder). The final pages present his ideas for looks to come, such as "Explorer," Mary J. Blige covered in eggplant body makeup with a rainbow of metallic eye shadows over her eyes and thickly glossed red lips; "Floralia," a freckled Lucy Liu resembling a sprite from A Midsummer's Night Dream; and "Venusian de Milo," Sharon Stone as an orange-haired, one-breast-baring sci-fi femme fatale. Throughout, Aucoin augments an already colorful book with step-by-step instruction, chatty commentary on each look and model, and riffs on such topics as friendship, politics (he repeatedly applauds the Clinton Administration for embracing diversity in the '90s), and the environment.

"Appreciating (even highlighting) individuality is one of the great things about makeup," asserts Aucoin, and Face Forward is a dazzling testament to that belief. For those who see the fun of makeup and are eager to experiment with the virtually unlimited possibilities of it, this book is a boon. --Rebecca Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best I've read so far . . ........2007-06-27

Lots of great photographs filled with lots of good and useful information. I would recommend this book before any of the other "makeup" and "beauty" guides by other makeup artists.

5 out of 5 stars This is a unique book.......2007-05-18

Perhaps a little bit more for the advanced make up artist, I was amazed by the way that such changes were created.. I wish only that Kevyn was alive and had a school where you could learn some of his techniques. He was amazing. A good book to have.

5 out of 5 stars Dramatic, crazy, and lots of fun to try!.......2007-05-18

While Aucoin's other book, Making Faces, is much more practical and useful, this one shows off what he can do and how much makeup can change a person's appearance; it demonstrates the concept of face as canvas, and with the before-afters featuring crazy feats like making Winona Ryder look like Elizabeth Taylor, transforming Gwyneth Paltrow into James Dean, or putting Edith Piaf's face on Christina Ricci.

The first half of the book features the to-die-for advice on makeup basics, from the anatomy of a stocked makeup kit (brushes, powders, shadows, and dozens of others), crazy before-afters, break-downs of different looks and variations, notes on color, shading, concealing, doing eyebrows, eyes, cheeks, lips, etc.

The second half does extreme looks that are more theatrical than those from his last book. They might not be things you would do unless you are involved in theatre...or like to pretend you are a geisha or an Elizabethan queen, but there are also plenty of wearable looks as well or elements from the crazy ones that give you a jumping off point for something more adventurous.

Aucoin remains THE authority on makeup, and this book, while not integral to doing the basics, is a great companion to Making Faces, and the awesome pictures are, as always, shocking, inspirational, and above all, lots of fun to try on yourself.

3 out of 5 stars A great display of art, not a manual........2007-04-04

The pictures of his work are really great and he's obviously a very talented artist.
His transformation of Christina Ricci as Edith Piaf,Martha Stewart as Veronica Lake,Calista Flockhart as Audrey Hepburn,Liza Minelli as Marilyn Monroe and so on, are stunning! I enjoyed every picture, they're a great example of what make up can do,how it can transform a person's look.
This book isn't a manual on how to choose, for instance, the right foundation's color according to your carnation, color of hair, age and season.
It's not about how to choose the right brush, how to choose the right colour (of concealer, eye shadow and blush...),how to apply make-up for a natural look or for an evening look .For this kind of advice and tips,Bobby Brown beauty book will answer your questions.

5 out of 5 stars Face Forward.......2007-04-02

I LOVE THIS BOOK AS A BRAND NEW MAKE-UP ARTIST MYSELF, THIS BOOK IS GIVING ME THE BOOST TO GO OUT IN THE WORLD AND WANT TO GIVE EVERYONE I SEE A MAKEOVER.

I did the vampiress and japanese doll faces from this book on my daughter and friend. We made an errand to our local "clown store" and all the entertainers said how great they were. Those were just 2 of the fun face designs out of the book. The wicked reptile & colorful butterfly faces from this book are also very nice. There are over 40 faces!

4 out of 5 stars Usborne Face Painting.......2006-08-01

Excellent for any birthday party or special event. Simple enough for the beginner but also interesting full face designs. Great book.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best!.......2002-10-24

For ten years, I've been painting faces for carnivals, parties, Halloween - you name it - this book can take rank beginners and allow them to paint very professional looking faces. The instructions are easy to follow, and elaborate on multiple techniques, including sponging and using different brush tips to achieve different effects. I highly recommend it - a word of caution- use only high quality face paints as they cover and blend better than the cheapos! Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Not as informational as I would've liked.......2006-07-15

This book is full of colorful pictures, but I'm afraid short on the information I hoped to find within. If you are just begining to make your own cosmetics, this MIGHT have information you can use; however, for the person hoping to find new information concerning formulas, etc., no such luck.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book - perfect for beginners to experienced home-makeup chemists.......2005-12-31

This is a beautifully presented book, with gorgeous photo images. The recipes are easy to use, the ingredients mostly easy to find and natural. I would have appreciated just a little more information on color blending, but I plan to do my own experimenting anyway. Excellent job. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for a retro look!.......2006-12-31

I cannot believe I lost this on the BART train on my way to visit a makeup artist!
This booklet helped me achieve exactly the type of look with authenticity of makeup color for the time, etc. that I was looking for. For every period, there were several looks, from innocent to siren, that gave you a wide range of authentic period styles to copy for.
I am not willing to pay $250 to replace my copy at this time, but I REALLY feel a tremendous loss to not have this as a resource.
Now I know how different the youthful Audrey Hepburn's eyebrows were, say from those of Elizabeth Taylor. And when I want Audrey's eyebrows, I want hers--not Liz's. They really were quite different and GORGEOUS!

1 out of 5 stars Turudich is a rip-off artist!.......2006-06-08

Not exactly. The people who sell her book for loads of money are. Her books are just great to flip through. If you are looking for thorough details, this is not for you. I have this book and I like it as a collector's item (not to mention cherish it for it's value. I can't believe I paid over $140 on this book!! I'm ridiculous!). If you want to copy actual make-up from the early and mid-20th century, you should buy books that are from actual make-up artists. In my opinion, She copied a lot of her stuff from Kevyn Aucoin's "Making Faces." He's a real make-up artist who covers the flapper, vamp, bombshell, etc... looks in his books (you should also check out "Face Forward" also by Kevyn Aucoin). In "Vintage Face" Turudich covers those and a few others but she basically says the same thing over and over. She just changes up the colors to use for each look. Some websites are even more helpful than this book. Another extra info, her "1940s Hairstyles" isn't even that great either. She completely copied a book that was published back in the 40s, leaving out some detailed instructions. There is nothing in her book giving credit to it. I guess what I'm trying to say is: If you want to copy the looks, this isn't the book for you. If you want to collect Turudich's books (like me) than go ahead and spend a bill or two...haha. Also, just wanted to point out: you should really be careful buying expensive books. I bought this book from a seller here and some pages are missing (the last few about where you could find vintage colors on the market)!

3 out of 5 stars A slender volume but still a nice reference.......2003-05-02

Yes, this book is not a comprehensive guide to vintage looks and cosmetics.

Yes, the photos are sadly only in black and white.

However, the classic film star photos to accompany each look are wonderful. Case in point, the evolution of Gene Tierney from the 1930s with slightly pudfy cheeks to 1940s glamour girl.

Defintely snap this one up if you can find a good quality used copy. A discounted price will help soften the blow of the covers being too close together.

An expanded, revised edition would be a most welcome addition to my personal library

2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed.......2002-09-16

This book has no pictures to further illustrate the points that it makes. It is all in black and white. It is basically information that you would know anyway from general makeup application. It goes through the different eras but doesn't cover in very much detail. At the back there is a recipe section for making your own makeup but it is unlikely that these would be made as some use dangerous products!!Very diasppointed with the book-lucky I bought it second hand.

1 out of 5 stars ..........2002-07-31

What a complete waste of money. This book was much anticipated until I got it in the mail. Not only was it small, but it lacked so much detail!! The stupid thing isn't even in color! Yea, they give you a color chart, but don't show how to apply it when using make up.

If anyone still wants to buy it...I got one for sale.

5 out of 5 stars Keeping the Wrinkles at Bay.......2007-06-08

I first got this brilliant and easy-to-follow book years ago when I didn't have a hint of wrinkles. I used it for a few weeks, then sort of laid it aside. Recently my 80-year-old mother-in-law was in town and was complaining about wrinkles around her mouth. I pulled the book out, showed her some exercises, and she began Within a few days, you could see a difference.

Since I am now mid-50's, I decided to try to get ride of my extra chin and some wrinkles from my mouth to chin. I began this routine and within 2 weeks people are asking questions "what are you doing to look younger", etc. I actually do several of the other exercises as well and my face feels much more elastic and healthy, and is definitely toning up.

I have already given some of these books to some of my massage clients.

Go for it! It works! Connie

4 out of 5 stars Good exercises and a great book .......2006-02-15

This book is easy to understand, it does explain things and how to do the exercises. This is not rocket science, I don't see how other books would be much better. And there is nothing wrong with using a model to show the exercises. Geeezzzz

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK!.......2004-12-31

This book is very detailed especially the drawings of the face showing you every muscle being worked. I haven't had this book long, but look forward to some very exciting results. If you have just five mins a day this book is for you. I just incorporate it with my daily workouts. Why not workout your face just like you workout your body, it makes perfect sense. Everything the author says about working out your facial muscles like you workout your body's muscles is so true! I have been working out with weights for years and know first hand what good toned muscles can do for your body and it's appearance. So pick up a copy you will be glad you did!

***NOTE*** I have now used the method in this book for awhile and can say it is really making a difference. I started to have slightly saggy eyelids like my father, and this is helping lift that area up very nicesly. I have noticed a huge difference in my chin area as well. The book and instructions are so easy, it only takes five mins a day.I feel I am making a huge investment with my face for the future. Even though I am only 37, I feel it's never too early or late to start. Get this book!!

4 out of 5 stars I have had this book and used it off and on for the last.......2001-12-09

year. One thing that impressed me about this book is that it actually addresses the issue of line formation from doing facial exercises. Thus, it tells you where to place your fingers to prevent the formation of artificial lines. None of the other facercise books or tapes do that. However, you have to picture some of the exercises since the book doesn't explain how to do some of them.

I recommend THIS book along with some type of facercise tape.

5 out of 5 stars Pictures are excellent.......2001-11-29

I love this book because the photographs are so clear. Each exercise shows great pictures: one shows a drawing of the entire head with all the muscles and the targeted ones highlighted, and one photo of the woman's face with lines drawn on the skin showing the targeted muscles, and then the photo(s) of the exercise with a very clear written description. I love it!

I bought this book for my 12 year old Niece. I found myself going through it and learning alot of basics that at 35 I did not know. I do not wear make-up most of the time. But on those special days I will look great because of this book. Now that I am going to buy one for me. I feel this book is good for the beginners. It tells you about the basics for eyebrows, buying brushes, picking out if your a cool or warm color person, and more.

5 out of 5 stars WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMENED.......2003-06-13

I am facinated with make up and how beautiful it looks on us. Its marvelous how a plain face can improve so much with make up. This book is a great beginer book and still is good with advance make up artist. It gives step by step instructions on how to apply make up. It covers Foundation, cheeks, lips, defining eye brows, shaping eyebrows, eyeshadow, eye liner...everything your face will need o look beautiful. I would definitely recommened this book to anybody who wants to look lovely.

2 out of 5 stars Good For Starters..........2000-05-31

A fairly good book, though she seems to have you put on too much make-up. "Foundation is neccesary" etc...when I used her tips I looked good, but a bit made-up! It has great tips, though, and is definitely a good starting book! For a more every-day book, with good tips and stuff, I would get Kevyn Aucoin's "Making Faces."

4 out of 5 stars A Must For All Make-Up Students!.......2000-04-20

What a great book! I am a professional Make-Up artist who both lectures make-up at a modelling academy and a Make-Up & Hairdressing Academy and does freelance work. This book provides information for both levels of education. Chapters on Tools of Trade and how to look after them are a must. Once you read through this chapter, move on to learn about make-up products and application techniques. There are sections about analyising the facial structure, undertones of skin, as well as making the most of these attributes. Learn how to create certain looks for different occasions. This book is wonderful for discovering the basics of make-up application and the basic concepts of colour in make-up application. I wish this book was around when I did my make-up course!

I bought this for my 7 year old sister...she loves it! She is learning about science without even knowing it and loves making the different concoctions!

5 out of 5 stars Fun for Kids seven and up.......2001-07-26

"The incredible secret formula book" gives plenty of neat little things to keep you and your kids busy on those boring summer days.

Most of the things in this book use items you probably all ready have in your home: paper, corn starch, sugar and various food items.

This book details things like How to make invisible ink or disappering ink. If that doesn't interest you there's making chalk out of egg shells or how to recylce paper. you can even make "Mutant slime" a kids favorite. Don't like mutant Slime? how 'bout psylly slime or miss muppet slime? victal slime or udderly Gross slime? lots of fun for kids and thier mom and or dad.

5 out of 5 stars Kids' Favorite.......2001-07-06

This book has become my children's favorite. It is full of cheap ideas that the kid's love to experiment with. I would recommend this book to all parents.

Book Description

Cindy Crawford demonstrates how to put on a "basic" face simply and effectively. Drawing on the invaluable advice of world-renowned makeup artist Sonia Kashuk, Cindy offers how-to tips on skin preparation and the tools you need to get started. Then, in separate sections, she discusses using concealer and powder to create the perfect foundation and teaches ways to enhance eyes, cheeks, and lips to bring out the natural beauty in all women.

Cindy knows that in the '90s, women are too busy to spend a lot of time and fuss putting on makeup. She doesn't suggest imitating the glamorous, made-up looks of models who adorn magazine covers, but gives practical advice for every woman who wants the face she sees in the mirror in the morning to look its best.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on makeup I've ever seen.......2006-05-31

I think people like to bag this book simply because Cindy Crawford wrote it. It's like "oh, she's a model, professionals do her makeup and she has to be too dumb to write anything worthwhile anyway". Actually this is the best book I've ever seen on makeup and the one I'd pick above any other to recommend to anyone and I'm a qualified makeup artist myself.

A lot of the stuff you'll find in this book made up the foundation of the course where I studied (in beauty as opposed to screen and theatrical). Why? - because it's the essentials of what beauty and everyday makeup is all about. It gives you all the basics and then what you need to start and then develop your own style in makeup. It's also easy to follow, well written and yet very comprehensive.

I've personally found that most books by professional makeup artists only appear to teach you, but actually just give pretty pictures with blurbs that don't really help much. And if you know what you're looking at, most of their 'tips' and methods arn't that great either. Those books have generally struck me as being more for self-promotion then anything else. A makeup artist with a book full of glossy model and celebrity photo's if it sells well enough instantly becomes a 'star' makeup artist. They don't have to actually teach you anything.

This book is the real deal. I get annoyed that people bag it just because it was written by a model. No, all models arn't dumb. It's a great book.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2005-04-28

I love this book! I think because Cindy Crawford has so much experience with the world of beauty that she cuts through all the bull, and gets to basic stuff if you want to wear make-up but do not want to look like a floozy. Plus, she gives great tips on buying makeup, using makeup, etc. She gives unvarnished but very helpful advice. It is the best book I have seen on beauty tips. Plus the pictures and silver cover are cool too. I am surprised it is not on shelves anymore. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't know what they are doing when it comes to makeup.

4 out of 5 stars good for basic instruction.......2005-01-04

this book is good if you want to learn the basics of makeup use. crawford tells you how to apply, what to apply with, what to apply on, what to buy, etc...all the basics. the color tear sheet in the back is good to take when going shopping--it gives handy tips on picking the right products. as other reviewers have said, the pictures tend to be more glamour shots than instruction, but the photos of the actual makeup products and tools are good. If you are looking for a basic instruction book, this is good. If you already know the basics, you maybe should look elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars This is a horrible book....I learned not one piece of info.......2004-06-24

This is a remnant of the 90's no doubt and Cindy Crawford thought
she could put out a mediocre book with her name on it and it would sell well.
Well I don't know how it sold...but it was a total waste of money on
my part. If you are a woman and have been doing your own makeup for
3 months or more...trust me, Cindy Crawford does not know much more than you
or I. Save your money ladies....this is a waste of pulp.

1 out of 5 stars Completely Useless for Anyone Over 12.......2003-11-22

Cindy Crawford is a model who is fortunate enough to have professional makeup artists apply her makeup. You would think with access to these professionals, she would have learned some more impressive techniques on the way. Read the disappointing reviews of this book, and don't make the mistake I did and buy the book anyway!

This book is not for people who don't know whether to use liquid or powder makeup. This book is for people who can't pronounce the word makeup. I imagine that this book would be a good gift for a young girl who is just starting to learn how to wear makeup. It faithfully catalogues the different types and textures of makeup and the types of brushes used. However it gives NO COMMENTARY on which types of makeup should be used for different looks. Applying foundation and skin care are the main things emphasized. Anyone who has been wearing makeup for even a brief time knows what is out there and knows how to put the simple products on. There is no mention in this book of color choice, contouring, shading, or more sophisticated styles. These are the difficult aspects of makeup that very few people can pick up on their own and require a book to learn. The "techiques" and lists of makeup types that obtain from this book can easily be figured out by a simple trip to the makeup counter.

Another tell-tale sign of a bad makeup book is the lack of pictures featuring different looks on different faces. The only face in this book is Cindy Crawford, and all the makeup looks are natural, and might very well be from the same makeup session. In every picture it doesn't even look like she's wearing makeup. Obviously, I don't think the ground breaking techniques this book mentions (blending is important, shocking!) make her look good. The fact that she's Cindy Crawford makes her look good. The pictures are useless, and they all look the same.

The makeup philosophy Crawford swears by gives the best possible insight into the quality of the this book.

"Makeup should not take more than 5 minutes"

If a rudimentary understanding of makeup is what you require, then this book is the perfect present for your 13th birthday. However, by your sweet sixteen you're going to need something with a lot more substance than this. Only a model with a professional makeup artist to rely upon can get by with this simplistic knowledge of makeup.
