5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-03-26

This was packed with information and lots of tips and help. This book had tons of important points and suggestions. If you are toxic (and we all are) you may want to start with this book.

4 out of 5 stars Digestive issues? Read on..........2006-03-22

I thought this book was really helpful for those who are stuggling with their weight or have digestive issues but are unclear why.

The book is organized in sections which make it a breeze to read. The author recounts specific events that happened to her throughout the piece which makes it that much more credible.

2 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor.......2005-11-13

I read this book, and found it to pretty much be a rehash of ideas and theories that have been around the internet and "hypochondriac" community for a while (I say hypochondriac community because that's how most doctors treat us and we're left to go find our own solutions).

There were NO surprises in this book. No new information. Its been around for years.

Some of these remedies might have worked for some people, but from what I can glean from internet discussion groups, most have not found relief from them, including myself, and rarely, if ever, have all the remedies worked on one person.

This book might be on the up and up, but in the end I was left feeling that this was more of an advertisement by a doctor looking for patients, rather than an autobiography.

I would be interested to hear if any of the other posters have found relief from what is in this book, or are they simply running on hope and some sort of validation that they are not really hypochondriacs, but victims of some medical community scam. If not, you've got to wonder if its not just one more scam preying on those in need.

Been there, done that.

5 out of 5 stars Easy, useful reference.......2005-09-10

The book recaps material from other authors, such as Sherry Rogers, M.D. and other experts, in a handy and straight forward way. Having read numerous more complicated books while struggling with fatigue and brain fog, this one was a breath of fresh air (pun intended). It also has significant original material that I had not read elsewhere. All in all, an excellent read.

4 out of 5 stars The Odyssey of a Doctor.......2004-12-30

You should give a copy of this book to your dentist and have to be extremely careful when he uses mercury to fill your tooth cavities. It also says that Leaky Gut Syndrome is the main reason for a number of illness. There could a number of reasons for this to happen. If you would like to know more about all these, then you will have to buy this book and read it yourself. I bought it directly from her website at: www.drgloriagilbere.com

I'm at the airport posting this review and looking forward to my long flight now that I have this book. Halfway through I simply cannot put it down. Just like my delicious cup of s o y f e e. It's a coffee substitute that's been helping me ween off caffeine since my doctor mentioned it. Made from soy it even lowered my cholesterol. Look for it online at www.s o y c o f f ee.com. Oh, gotta run or I'll miss my flight!.

Book Description

London's social season is in full swing, and the Victorian aristocracy can't stop whispering about a certain gentleman who claims to be the direct descendant of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. But he's not the only topic of wagging tongues. Drawing rooms, boudoirs, and ballrooms are abuzz with the latest news of an audacious cat burglar who has been making off with precious items that once belonged to the ill-fated queen.

Light gossip turns serious when the owner of one of the pilfered treasures is found murdered, and the mysterious thief develops a twisted obsession with Emily. But the strong-minded and fiercely independent Emily will not be shaken. It will take all of her considerable wit and perseverance to unmask her stalker and ferret out the murderer, even as a brewing scandal threatens both her reputation and her romance with her late husband's best friend, the dashing Colin Hargreaves.

A Poisoned Season is a delicious blend of sparkling romance, heart-pounding suspense, and rich historical detail that only Tasha Alexander could create.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simply Lovely.......2007-06-25

I am a sucker for all things Victorian. This Elizabeth Bennet meets Sherlock Holmes was brilliantly played. I was captivated after merely the first ten pages. I did not set this book down until the mystery of the murder and the rightfull heir to the French throne had been solved. Emily "Kallista" Ashton was the perfect, yet somewhat untraditional, Victorian heroine. She was a widow, learned, witty, head strong and proud of it, yet still fell victim to a good swoon. I would reccomend this book to any Victorian lover who also has an affinity for romance, mystery, and a touch of femminism. Thank you Tasha Alexander for sharing this Season with us.

4 out of 5 stars very enjoyable.......2007-06-14

A captivating theft and murder mystery serves almost as an excuse for us to take a delightful trip through Victorian London; where ladies stroll around Hyde Park, their endless gossip masked by the resonating sound of clopping hooves on cobbled streets; where perfectly groomed gentlemen frequent male-only clubs and discuss politics over a glass of port; where high society mingles in lavish drawing rooms along Park Lane and attends extravagant balls in Belgravia mansions.

An interesting plot and a varied and intriguing set of characters, although for me the best elements of this book were the quick, witty, inspired dialogues and the poignant, concise and so evocative-of-the-era narrative. They made the whole thing come alive. Very enjoyable reading.

5 out of 5 stars Love Lady Emily.......2007-06-12

First Sentence: There are several things one can depend upon during the London Season: an overwhelming barrage of invitations, friends whose loyalties turn suspect, and at least one overzealous suitor.

Lady Emily Ashton is through the period of mourning for her husband in time to join London's social season. A new face on the scene is Charles Berry who claims to be heir to the French throne in this post-revolutionary time. Although he is courting a friend of Emily's to be his future Queen, he wants Emily as his mistress. Is he the one sending Emily anonymous poems written in Greek? And who is stealing treasures of the late Marie-Antoinette? But most important, who poisoned society member David Francis? Although her maid has been arrested, Mrs. Francis asks Emily to prove her maid innocent.

Ms Alexander combines history, society and a dash of romance into a first-rate read. She has taken three threads; who committed the murder, who is the thief and who is trying to ruin Emily's reputation, and combines them into one very interesting, intriguing story. Emily is a great character; smart, independent and resourceful. There is a romance, but she doesn't depend on him to save her. Her depiction of Victorian England is delightful, while very much the upper class. It does show the intrigues and intricacies of live among the social elite. The plot kept me going and I didn't expect the ending at all. While it didn't have the emotional pull of her first book, "And Only to Deceive." this was a very good read.

5 out of 5 stars Victorian Victory.......2007-05-21

Tasha Alexander has finally produced her long-awaited sequel, "A Poisoned Season," and it was definitely worth the wait. I found myself savoring each page and trying to extend my enjoyment as our unlikely heroine muddles her way through the current season fending off thieves, rumor-mongers, and both wanted and unwanted proposals. The dialogue is witty and the plot twists and turns as Emily wends her way through London on her adventure. I, for one, am eagerly looking forward to her next adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Another stellar book this new series!.......2007-05-18

I had been suitably impressed by Alexander's first book, And Only to Deceive, and was quite excited to read this new book. I was not disappointed - definitely an enjoyable read!

We are taken back into the life of Lady Emily Ashton, who is now being courted by Colin (from the first book) as well as several other love interests throughout the book, but we get the satisifaction of a match at the end (one that will bode well for future mysteries!).

Alexander combines the intrigue of a French pretender with jewelry thefts that all come together in the end in a fun - and hard to guess - way. I thought I had the ending figured out, but was proven wrong - always a fun situation. Emily's sleuthing in a combination of luck and hard work - she deciphers some coded letters with some textbooks provided by Colin.

What I like best of Alexander's work is that well Emily has many modern notions, she is still firmly entrenched in her time, making her an extremely believable character. I hate books where the heroine/hero is so modern there is absolutely no way they would survive in society nor even actually exist!

We also see the return of many of the best characters of the first book: Ivy Brandon, Margaret Seward and of course Cecile!

Book Description

Each week the oil and gas fields of sub-Saharan Africa produce well over a billion dollars’ worth of oil, an amount that far exceeds development aid to the entire African continent. Yet the rising tide of oil money is not promoting stability and development, but is instead causing violence, poverty, and stagnation. It is also generating vast corruption that reaches deep into American and European economies. In Poisoned Wells, Nicholas Shaxson exposes the root causes of this paradox of poverty from plenty, and explores the mechanisms by which oil causes grave instabilities and corruption around the globe. Shaxson is the only journalist who has had access to the key players in African oil, and is willing to make the connections between the problems of the developing world and the involvement of leading global corporations and governments.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Poisoned Wells.......2007-06-11

Of the current crop of "what is wrong with Africa" books including "The Shackled Continent", "The White Man's Burden" and "The Trouble with Africa", Nicholas Shaxson's analysis and prescriptions for change are the most radical and on-the-money. Shaxson's book should be widely read and discussed. Unfortunately, too much invested in the status quo by all concerned to see much likelihood of change within the next few decades.

Book Description

Like Silent Spring, Diet for a Poisoned Planet took on an entire industry and went onto become a classic work of environmental writing. Now reissued in a new millennium edition, the work's in-depth look at the contaminants in individual food items is updated with the latest Total Diet Study findings.

A motivating book, Diet for a Poisoned Planet changes people viscerally. Steinman tells his own story of fishing in the Santa Monica Bay as a child and how he went on to testify before Congress as an expert witness on the contamination of his own body by the fish he ate. The book is written by a true expert who has been a member of a National Academy of Sciences committee to advise Congress on seafood safety legislation.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Diet for a Poisoned Planet.......2007-06-27

Very interesting book. Documented on USDA reports. Makes me afraid to eat anything commercial, however. It is also very revealing about how slack our government is in regulating the amount of poisons on our produce. We need to demand organic products. They are available, albeit more expensive. But the more demand, the lower the price. Right?

5 out of 5 stars so informative.......2007-04-10

this book is scary but informative. even being a bit older the infomration it contains is still very relavant and not dated.
well set up and easy to refernce too.
excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars disappointed by the update.......2007-01-19

I bought this book because it was an update from the 1990 book, which I also own. In reading from the beginning, it would appear that the only information that is new are the results of the new tests for toxicity. Perhaps I am wrong, because I didn't study and compare both books side by side, but that was my impression and my impressions are usually accurate. Having read the original book years ago, it was like re-reading it so I went over that part very, very quickly. For those who haven't read the first book, you will probably find this book a five star. It was somewhat of a disappointment to me, yet I'm still giving it four stars because of valuable education on what is toxic and what is not, how toxic it is or isn't and from where it is and where it is not.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource for eating healthfully!.......2007-01-06

I am a big fan of the author and first discovered "Diet for a Poisoned Planet" when the first edition was published in 1990. I just read David Steinman's latest book "Safe Trip to Eden: Ten Steps to Save Planet Earth From the Global Warming Meltdown" and this is an excellent companion.

I am quite suspicious that two of the reviews below seems to be from the California Advisory Board's counter PR campaign to the first edition. However, as a result of the information in this book, many raisin companies reduced or eliminated the spraying of DDT on raisins! Here are some references on this PR campaign:

"Flying the Koop: A Surgeon General's Reputation On the Line." PR Watch, Volume 5, No. 4, 4th quarter 1998.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Story Ever Told!.......2006-12-29

I bought this book in the early 1990's and it changed my life. It was the most informative book I have ever read (and I read them all!) on the subject of a healthy diet and what goes into (and onto) the food we eat. I carried this book around as my food "bible" for years and years and was thankful every day that Mr. Steinman did thousands of hours of research to help make my life healthier and happier by testing the foods we all eat for toxic residues and other toxic substances and publishing the results. This book is for EVERYONE. Every person on this planet should read this book and use it to help them make their food choices.

A few years back I was wondering if some of the material in the book wasn't outdated, especially with the boom in organic food available now (thank goodness) and wished Mr. Steinman would update the book. My copy is old and tatered but I still refered to it all the time. Low and behold, it's here! An updated version! Long awaited, I pre-ordered it on Amazon and it arrived yesterday and I've already read most of it. It is just as great as the old version and I feel better that the information is now more current, espeically since I have two small children to feed, and the current information is invaluable. PLEASE, read this book. Do it for yourself, your health, your kids, YOUR WHOLE FAMILY. The information is will change your life for the better.

I grew up in Pacific Palisades, near the Santa Monica Bay where Mr. Steinman's story begins, so I truly understand his reason for writing this book (I remember the signs posted on the Santa Monica Pier too warning not to eat the fish caught! AWFUL!) and wanting and NEEDING to know the truth about what goes into our precious food. If people trust our government to keep our food healthy you are fools. Take matters into your own hands. Buy this book.

By the way, I just read some disturbing reviews that insinuated that this book has something to do with Scientology. I've read this book cover to cover for over a decade and can't figure out how some people come up with these sort of strange ideas. Very worrying....

Thank you Mr. Steinman for taking care of me and my family! Truly!

Knight continues putting out a fine historical murder mystery product. I hope that he has some books left in him. We are of an age that I hope so.

5 out of 5 stars Crowner John at His Best.......2005-02-01

December 1194 and Crowner John is away from Exeter in his capacity as Coroner of all Devon. He is called to the remains of a shipwreck in Torbay, but not everything is as it seems. Bodies from the wreck have been found among the debris and some of them carry injuries not conducive to being drowned.

While Sir John is away with Gwyn his bodyguard and his clerk Thomas de Peyne, trouble is brewing in Exeter, a rape has been committed on Christina Rifford, the daughter of a rich merchant. Sir John returns to Exeter to find the city in uproar with accusations flying around from the families involved. Then just before she is due to be married Lady Adele de Courcy is found dead underneath a pile of rubbish in the poorest part of the City. She also appears to have suffered a sexual attack. Suddenly Sir John has most of the influential people of Exeter banging on his door for justice.

The common factor in both killings appears to be the silversmith, Godfrey Fitzosbern, who by chance is Crowner John's next door neighbour. Can john protect the man until the truth emerges . . .

Bernard Knight is a consummate writer of the medieval novel and this is as good as any he has written.

    Book Description

The deliberate and often well-camouflaged addition of excess salt to processed foods has momentous health consequences, comparable in nature to the well-documented risks of smoking tobacco. Should our processed food come with a government health warning? The authors of this book provide a compelling and forceful account of these complex issues, teasing out fact from fantasy, and casting light on some of the hidden forces working to manipulate and exploit the consumer. This scientific detective story unravels with startling clarity how the evidence for the prosecution has been obfuscated, misinterpreted and even denigrated by some of the powerful vested interests of the multi-billion dollar food industry. Along the way, the authors illuminate the rich history and mythology associated with salt, its symbolism and manifold socio-economic consequences, all illustrated with an entertaining and eclectic selection of historical and contemporary illustrations. On the one hand this is a book with profound implications for public health, and on the other it is an entertaining and instructive account of a part of our diet that is too easily taken for granted, and ignored at our peril.

2 out of 5 stars Good but contains errors and not sufficiently comprehensive.......2005-06-07

Professor MacGregor is to be applauded for his efforts at informing the public about the hidden salt in foods, especially in convenience foods, and for seeking to bring about a reduction in the levels of salt added to food by manufacturers. He and his co-author have enlarged on these matters and other aspects of salt in this book. Unfortunately two glaring errors render the book less than helpful to those most in danger of or most harmed by salt. No mention is made of obese steroid victims, whose weight gain is caused by sodium and water retention, and who would lose much of their excess weight by curtailing their salt intake. And the book states categorically that HRT does not cause these problems, whereas it is, sadly, many women's experience that HRT does indeed cause severe water retention and weight gain. Like the steroidees, obese HRT victims would also lose excess water/weight by curtailing salt intake. Let us hope that if a revised edition is produced these errors will be corrected and that it will also advise that patients taking steroids or HRT should be warned not to eat salt or foods containing salt while taking their medication.

    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Important Book.......2003-01-14

Excuse the cliche, but everyone should read this book. After an interesting historical overview on human consumption of salt, the authors present a clear and compelling argument about the strong link between salt/sodium consumption and disease. I recommend that people interested in this should also read "The Salt Solution", which is perhaps a more accessible, shorter, and simpler book with a similar message. This book is an excellent companion to "The Salt Solution" because it lays out, in a more traditional academic style, the evidence from medical research studies published in reputable journals, the indisputable harmful effects of salt/sodium.

This is the book that you (or anyone skeptical of the salt/disease connection) would want to have if you were not satisfied with the credibility of typical trade books and, instead, wanted to see data, graphs, and careful arguments based on primary source research articles.

Also fascinating is the section on the salt industry and food processing industry response to efforts to educate the public about the dangers of salt consumption. These responses are eerily similar to those the tobacco industry ... perhaps not a surprise, given that many tobacco and food processing companies are owned by the same corporation and presumably employ the same lawyers and public relations teams. Read this book and you will realize that salt/sodium is bad stuff that is hidden in large quantities in many common foods. It could save you from early onset of heart disease, stroke, stomach cancer, osteoporosis, and other maladies that you can have some control over if you decide to become more salt-sodium aware. This book is a good start to doing that.

4 out of 5 stars It'll change the way you eat.......1999-06-24

Prior to reading this book, I considered myself to be quite partial to salt in meals; a regular dispenser of the white crystals from the receptacle on the table. I approached the subject as a skeptic, believing that our bodies cause us to partake of the right amount of salt to suit our needs.

After reading it, my behaviour changed markedly, and I find (as the book suggests will happen) that my "need" for salt has diminished.

The authors' argument proceeds as follows:

    - Humans used to eat much less salt than they do now, and it is possible to prove a relationship between our larger intake today and the much higher rates of high blood pressure and concomitant diseases. Even today, in less advanced cultures where salt intake is less than 3g per day, high blood pressure is virtually unknown.

    - High blood pressure is a central cause of heart attacks and strokes.

    - Our physiological requirement is for only a small quantity of salt; the rest is "addiction".

    - If you have high blood pressure, reducing your intake of salt modestly to 5g per day can have the effect of reducing your blood pressure. (Tips for measuring your daily intake are given)

    - Excessive salt intake can also be linked with: fluid retention in women; certain forms of kidney disease; osteoporosis; kidney stones; carcinoma of the stomach; and asthma.

    - A link between high blood pressure and salt intake is not a new idea. However, vested interests have conspired (with commercial food interests acting in much the same way as tobacco interests have done) to obstruct attempts to use this to encourage a reduction in salt intake.

Various peripheral subjects are explored in the book. For example, it deals extensively and humorously with the very central role salt has played in society in the past: a source of wealth and tax revenue, a symbol of wit, durability, friendship and virility. The book covers the history of salt extraction, and the evolution of now firmly established links between high blood pressure and heart disease and other associated conditions.

The thesis appears to be rigorously argued (though as a medical layman I cannot be the judge of that). Since it was published, the level of publicity about the dangers of salt appears to have increased, with some purveyors of processed foods committing to reduce the salt contents of their wares. For this reason, I would suggest that the book has stimulated debate on the subject; and that must be a good thing. If the links are as direct as is here suggested this may have prolonged some lives already.

Despite the fact that a wide view is taken of the subject of salt here: history, significance, health implications; this book is not all light reading. It is clearly not intended to be an academic paper for publication in a peer-review journal. However there are some parts which may seem heavy reading and somewhat difficult to understand at the first encounter for medical neophytes like me.

In summary: a powerful thesis, an interesting discussion of the subject, don't take it to the beach with you.

    Book Description

Could actions have been taken prior to September 11 th to prevent the formation of a strong and resilient al Qaeda ? Might alternative development policies have prevented the World Trade Center attacks and forestalled the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq? Paradise Poisoned draws crucial lessons from Sri Lanka's civil wars to demonstrate that violent conflict and terrorism are both predictable and preventable .

John Richardson's study - carried out over nearly twenty years - employs rigorous political and economic analysis and a multi-disciplinary engagement of the systemic linkages between development, governance, and civil conflict. The author - a noted development professor and practitioner, applied systems theorist, and South Asian scholar - traces ten development failures that spawned conflict and terrorism in Sri Lanka, and he proposes a comprehensive prevention strategy summarised in ten key imperatives.

Thus, while contextually rich in its examination of Sri Lankan political history, the policy relevance of Paradise Poisoned extends also to cases like Kosovo, Kashmir, Palestine, Sudan, Afghanistan and now, in particular, Iraq.

Of special utility are 3 policy leverage points discussed at length by Richardson: meeting the needs and expectations of young men, increasing police effectiveness, and prioritizing business community involvement.

Political leaders often say they 'had no choice' when implementing policies such as the US invasion of Iraq or earlier Sri Lankan government interventions, yet this is rarely true. Multiple choices are usually available, and the longer the time horizon, the greater the range of choices. Paradise Poisoned demonstrates that deadly conflict and terrorism are both predictable and preventable.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging Conventional Wisdom.......2005-08-18

John Richardson's *Paradise Poisoned* is an important, timely, and groundbreaking book. The product of more than 18 years of work, it is a carefully researched account of Sri Lanka's fall from a beautiful island paradise and international development "success story", to a headline-grabbing example of a nation torn apart by terrorism and deadly civil conflict.

Drawing both on an innovative methodology and his long-standing work in the fields of international development and conflict, Professor Richardson demonstrates how Sri Lanka's tragic story clearly exposes a world-wide issue that has long been hiding in plain sight--that international development programs, conflict, and terrorism are intimately linked, and often in very negative ways. This is obviously a highly important and policy-relevant finding that is rarely discussed or analyzed in a rigorous manner--the only other book I can recall is Peter Uvin's work on Rwanda (Aiding Violence, 1998). Other important authors, like Mary Anderson (Do No Harm, 1999) offer valuable advice to practitioners on how to reduce conflict in the field, but Richardson and Uvin's more structural analyses expose how contemporary international development policies, put in place by well-meaning leaders and the international community, can be a factor that leads to deadly conflict in the first place.

The book has many lessons, but for me the most important is this profound critique of contemporary development wisdom, and Richardson's carefully documented case study makes it impossible to ignore his findings, or write them off as a simplistic superficial analysis based on preconceived conclusions. Quite the contrary, Richardson's approach is highly sophisticated, and his innovative systems methodology enables him to clarify how deadly conflict arises not from a single cause, but from a complex interaction of a number of critical factors that, acting together, help to explain the fall of Sri Lanka from apparent success to disastrous failure.

The practical policy lessons to be drawn are many, and reach well beyond the Sri Lanka case. Perhaps the most important lesson is that development policies need to be examined with an additional lens that clarifies the ways in which well-intended programs can exacerbate this complex set of factors that undo the development goals and lead to violent and persistent conflict and terrorism. Professor Richardson's useful book goes a long way in this direction by pointing out some of the most critical reference points for this new perspective. It is essential reading, both as a cautionary tale, and as an important source for anyone concerned with discovering specific ways to improve international development policy and reduce global violence.

5 out of 5 stars What Went Wrong in Sri Lanka?.......2005-08-09

John Richardson's *Paradise Poisoned* is far and away the most comprehensive study of civil violence in Sri Lanka ever undertaken. In its narrative sweep, mastery of detail, conceptual acuity and analytic range, it will never be surpassed. Indeed, no other study of civil violence anywhere rivals Richardson's in these several respects.

For those of us who have seen Sri Lanka from the inside, Richardson's large claim is beyond challenge: the country's descent into violence had no single overriding cause. Richardson assembled vast amounts of data (helpfully displayed in innumerable graphs and tables) on every conceivable contributing cause. His background in the analysis of dynamic systems gave him the best imaginable tools for mapping tangled developments over many decades. His conclusions are always compelling, strikingly so when he catalogs the beneficiaries of violent conflict.

One by one, the ten imperatives Richardson puts forward for preventing civil violence in developing societies may seem like common sense. His exhaustive, fully integrated study of the Sri Lankan experience massively substantiates every one of them. Taken together and taken seriously, they are represent our best chance for a better, safer world.
