    Book Description

Dark Sighted is just one of the names used to define a Wampanoag youth who is an emerging shaman. It would seem that he can see better in the dark than most people can see in broad daylight. It is 1620; the English have come to North America to stay and his people are the first Native Americans to have sustained contact with the Puritan colonists. To his face, most people call him Mole. He, alone, seems to be the only one who really understands the threat posed by the English to his people and their entire way of life. Mole is the weaponless warrior who must not shed another person's blood. He helps fend off traditional enemies such as the Narragansetts, the attack of a vengeful ghost, and the crippling influence of a manipulating Wampanoag sorcerer and traitor. Dark Sighted is a true Native American hero. Enjoy his story.

5 out of 5 stars Wish this novel had been published years ago!!.......2006-02-10

My only regret upon finishing Steve Anderson's brilliant historical novel is that his book wasn't written and published years ago when I was teaching American history. I should say, attempting to teach American history as the available textbooks treated the founding of the Plymouth Colony as if it were a typical Disney movie--folklore and legend parading as historical fact. And just try to present another point of view to students who take as literal fact that one George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and couldn't tell a lie; or that one Pocahonas tossed herself over John Rolfe to save him from barbaric, naked savages because she loved him and would sacrifice anything to save him. Steve, where was your historical novel when I attempted to teach my students that there could be another viewpoint or reality beyond the memories of the Grade One Thanksgiving pageant so tirelessly repeated even in 2006! Yes, this novel is historical fiction; but I have yet to read anything like it! That other perspective of those initial Europeans who settled onto the North American continent and the tragic and inevitable consequences of their arrival upon that indiginous population. Anderson's novel is not only well-researched and based upon the most current knowledge of the indiginous population of North America in the 1600's, but also one of those novels which you can't "put down." Steve, please follow up this novel with a continuing saga. And even if you don't, school systems across the U.S. should make "Dark Sighted" required reading!
