Book Description
Lots of people enjoy making or buying treats for their pets, but wouldn't it be wonderful to cook a real meal for the four-legged member of the household? Quirky yet practical, these cookbooks provide recipes that are nutritionally balanced and veterinarian-approved. They even include sections on "tandem" recipes - recipes for humans that, with slight modifications, can also be served to pets.
REAL FOOD FOR DOGS is written by Arden Moore, the first non-veterinarian to write the pet column for Prevention magazine.
Customer Reviews:
Best of them ALL.......2007-06-15
As a concerned 'mom', I appreciated the veterinary research that went into ALL of these recipes, but my dog, Stella, LOVES the TASTE. Her tap, tap, tap on the laminate in the kitchen as I stir the ingredients is a 'paws up' salute to Ms. Moore's obvious knowledge of what appeals to canine taste buds.
As a credentialed Library Media Teacher, I'm used to looking through reviews and researching what I purchase. This time around I was confident in the safety of the suggestions but the final judge was Stella-the-dog.
After our success with this title, I bought four other books by Arden Moore and am now devouring her latest, "The Dog Behavior Answer Book".
Good but...........2007-06-02
I think a book should have dailly suggested portions based on your pets weight and breed and this one does not have that. Being that your main concern should be your friends health and weight. Other wise it has some very good info on what work.
bow wow tail wagging good!.......2007-05-30
When we make these recipes for our dog he gobbles his meal up faster than we can eat. He would only eat his dry store boughten dog food if we would tease him to eat. Now when he smells us reheating it in the microwave he is there waiting to eat. What a nice change. He also sits patiently waiting when we are making the food somehow he knows it is for him. We have tried beef, chicken and turkey recipes and they are easy to make and use regular ingredients found in your kitchen. The food recipes and the treats recipes have all been enjoyed by our dog. What a surprise who would have thought he would like broccoli, green beans, or cauliflower. We are trying the recipe with sardines this week. Would highly recommend this book.
Good useful book........2007-05-29
This book is a valuable asset to anyone requiring information on reasonable recipes for dogs.
Cute..........2007-05-28
Cute book, has some interesting recipes to 'shake it up' for your dog, however, the recipes aren't health conscious, a little more research in that direction would have made it a better book. Dr. Pitcairn's "Complete Guide to Natural Health For Dogs & Cats" is a far superior book on this topic. I combined recipes from both books leaning towards healthful choices.

Fans of the National Geographic Channel's The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan will be grateful for Cesar's Way, an accessible guide to help new and current dog owners better understand the needs of their beloved pets. If you are not yet a fan, try to catch a couple of episodes of the remarkable show--you will be amazed, impressed, and motivated to create a healthier, more fulfilling relationship with your dog. In Cesar's Way, Cesar explains that dogs are not complicated, and despite what various owners think--not human. They rely on three key elements in their lives: exercise, discipline, and affection (in that order). "Problem dogs" can be attributed to "problem owners," owners who don't understand and misinterpret their dog's behavior. Cesar's Way is really a training program for dog owners, with chapters devoted to understanding the "power of the pack," taking responsibility for "how we screw up our dogs," and learning how to manage aggression. Cesar's book (a must-have for new and old dog owners) moves beyond basic obedience school techniques, and teaches owners how to change unwanted behavior by better understanding their "best friends." --Daphne Durham

Cesar Millan's Top 5 Tips for Going to the Dog Park
1. Make sure your dog is spayed or neutered, has all her shots, and is in good health. Under no circumstances should you bring a sick dog to a dog park!
2. Do not use the dog park as a substitute for the walk! If you drive to the park, leave your car a block away and take your dog on a vigorous walk of at least thirty-five minutes to drain some of her energy. Never take an over-excited dog to the park.
3. While at the park, don't "punch out" on your calm-assertive leadership. Be aware of your dog at all times, and take responsibility for her behavior.
4. A calm-submissive dog will not attract another dog's aggression--but an excited dog, a weak, timid dog, or an aggressive dog can become a fight-magnet.
5. Know your dog! If your dog has poor social skills, is overly fearful or is dog aggressive, or if you have not yet established your calm-assertive leadership with your dog, find a more controlled way to introduce her to the company of other dogs, such as "play dates" with one or two other dog owners.
Book Description
“I rehabilitate dogs. I train people.” —Cesar Millan
There are at least 68 million dogs in America, and their owners lavish billions of dollars on them every year. So why do so many pampered pets have problems? In this definitive and accessible guide, Cesar Millan—star of National Geographic Channel’s hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan—reveals what dogs truly need to live a happy and fulfilled life.
From his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show to his roster of celebrity clients to his reality television series, Cesar Millan is America’s most sought-after dog-behavior expert. But Cesar is not a trainer in the traditional sense—his expertise lies in his unique ability to comprehend dog psychology. Tracing his own amazing journey from a clay-walled farm in Mexico to the celebrity palaces of Los Angeles, Cesar recounts how he learned what makes dogs tick. In Cesar’s Way, he shares this wisdom, laying the groundwork for you to have stronger, more satisfying relationships with your canine companions.
Cesar’s formula for a contented and balanced dog seems impossibly simple: exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order. Taking readers through the basics of dog psychology and behavior, Cesar shares the inside details of some of his most fascinating cases, using them to illustrate how common behavior issues develop and, more important, how they can be corrected.
Whether you’re having issues with your dog or just want to make a good bond even stronger, this book will give you a deeper appreciation of how your dog sees the world, and it will help make your relationship with your beloved pet a richer and more rewarding one.
Learn what goes on inside your dog’s mind and develop a positive, fulfilling relationship with your best friend
In Cesar’s Way, Cesar Millan—nationally recognized dog expert and star of National Geographic Channel’s hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan—helps you see the world through the eyes of your dog so you can finally eliminate problem behaviors. You’ll learn:
• What your dog really needs may not be what you’re giving him
• Why a dog’s natural pack instincts are the key to your happy relationship
• How to relate to your dog on a canine level
• There are no “problem breeds,” just problem owners
• Why every dog needs a job
• How to choose a dog who’s right for you and your family
• The difference between discipline and punishment
• And much more!
Filled with fascinating anecdotes about Cesar’s longtime clients, and including forewords by the president of the International Association of Canine Professionals and Jada Pinkett Smith, this is the only book you’ll need to forge a new, more rewarding connection with your four-legged companion.

Customer Reviews:
Cesar's Way.......2007-06-28
This book is more about how Cesar Millan thinks and how he thinks you, as a North American, should think about dogs. So if dog psychology is what you are looking for, it's perfect. It has some tips for how to handle things your dog is doing that s/he shouldn't be, but it isn't a handbook of training tips. As he says, those are already in a plethora of how-to books. Still, I would have liked this kind of book from Cesar Millan. A whole book of inter-species psychology?
It really is Cesar's Way.......2007-06-28
Cesar's way is a great way to learn about dogs in their natural state of being. It talks about how to fix your dogs behavioral problems, and it talks about the changes you need to make in your life to help your dog be happy. Cesar's 3 rules are exercise, discipline and affection in that order. He talks about these rules multiple times in his book. They are the key to a happy healthy human-dog relationship.
I was a little disappointed.......2007-06-26
I thought this book was just his show written down on paper. I was expecting a little more guidance and specifics, but it was mostly too general to be of much help to me. For example, he will write, "if your dog is pulling hard on the leash, you have to show him that behavior is unacceptable". Ok, but what about when that doesn't seem to work? It could be that it is different for puppies because they are still babies. I have a 15 week old dalmatian.
I was also a little put off by all of the mentions of celebrities in the book. I mean, how many times do you have to mention Oprah or Will and Jada Smith and how wonderful they are? It felt like he was a big suck-up and it detracted from the value of some of his information for me.
Cesar's Way - the only way.......2007-06-26
I was ready to give up on my very aggressive, very territorial & hyper active male beagle. We were getting ready to put him down. I then checked out Cesar's Way from the library. 2 days later, I purchased it from amazon.com. Using this book, we have been able to turn our out of control beagle into a lovable, family pet that we have been striving to have for the past 3 years. We still have 2 areas that we are struggling with but we feel with more time & work he will come around with those also. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is having problems with the out of control dog. Like Cesar says in his book, euthenasia should be the last option after ALL other options have been exhausted.
Interesting book, not much help with training, though..........2007-06-19
I read this book because I was looking for a way to correct my two-year-old Lab/Chow mix's incessant barking, among other obnoxious problems. I quickly realized, though, that this is much more a personal history of Cesar Millan than a dog-training book--which is fine, but it wasn't what I was looking for. Considering that the book is subtitled "The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems," though, it didn't deliver for my husband and I. We have both agreed that it would probably be great for puppies, but our dog is set in her behavior pattern and this method just does not seem like it's going to work for us. Another major problem: Cesar recommends that you walk your dog every morning and every evening, and for at least an hour and a half each day. And that's a bare minimum! My husband and I both work full-time jobs and simply do not have the time to walk our dog that much. If you're a full-time dog trainer, obviously, you have time to walk dogs this much. One long walk per day is the best we can do for our dog. (He also says that if you can't commit to as much time as he says you should each day, you shouldn't get a dog.)
In the end, we were both looking for a book that would tell us how to fix our dog's problems. Cesar gives vague instructions about projecting "calm-assertive energy" and walking your dog to death. (It almost seems like you're supposed to walk your dog until they're too tired to do anything! I know every time we bring our dog home from a walk, she pretty much passes out for the next few hours.) While Cesar has had a fascinating life and has a great story to tell, this book simply didn't provide what my husband and I were seeking. We wanted more of a manual, and this was an autobiography followed by a group of case studies.

Book Description
Fancy Nancy is back! And when her family decides to get a dog, she's certain she can be fancier than ever. After all, a papillon—a small, delicate, fluffy dog—is the ultimate accessory. But her family wants a large, plain dog. How unglamorous!
With Fancy Nancy's trademark humor and warmth, Nancy discovers that real fanciness does not depend simply on appearance but more on a genuine joie de vivre, which is a fancy phrase for having lots of fun.
Customer Reviews:
Fancy meets positive messages...........2007-06-23
We also have the first "Fancy Nancy" and I am so pleased that the illustrations are still top notch and the story is innocent but with a message:
1) Solving problems: Nancy dog-sits to "try on" a papillion, while her parents look in resource books for a best breed.
2)Sibling rivlary solution Nancy learns that her younger sister was trying to be helpful while dogsitting and how to get along
3) Adopting a pet. I am a big proponent on shelter adoptions, unless you absolutely have to have a pure breed pet.
The parents of this book show wisdom and patience, while letting Nancy learn social skills without crushing her fancyness.
Can't wait till the next title.
Another Fancy Nancy Story.......2007-06-20
With a daughter named Nancy, I can hardly pass up books with a character like "Fancy Nancy." I would have bought the books for my daughter anyway, but I was pleased to discover how wonderful they are. The first book (called just Fancy Nancy) is a brilliant piece of writing and art with a sweet story that goes well beyond its title. So I was glad to see Ms. O'Connor and Ms. Glasser had put together another volume.
This time out, Nancy and her family are going to get a dog and, after babysitting a neighbor's posh puppy, find a different dog to fit them. Again, it's a nice story and the art is absolutely marvelous. I wasn't quite as touched by the story this time around but I was knocked out by how much I liked the first Fancy Nancy book so it's not too surprising that the second book is a bit of a disappointment. Still, it's a great story and a beautiful book that I will love sharing with my family for years to come.
We love Fancy Nancy!.......2007-06-14
My 4-year-old daughter loves Fancy Nancy! She didn't like this book quite as much as the first Fancy Nancy book, but she still liked it. Since we've been thinking about getting a dog, this book hits home. It helps kids realize that they have to think about what dog is best for them and their family, not just what dog they think is the cutest/prettiest. Very sweet book.
A lively, fun first-person discussion.......2007-06-11
When Fancy Nancy's family decides to get a dog, she's certain she can be fancier than ever with a small fancy dog as an accessory. But her family wants a large, plain dog - can she convince them that for appearance's sake a fancy dog is better? A lively, fun first-person discussion pairs with different drawings by Robin Preiss Glasser to make for a warm story.
Perfect for Dog-lovers!.......2007-05-26
My girls love dogs and we have been discussing the right breed for our family. This is the perfect book for that theme. Very cute!

Excellent Recipes.......2007-06-27
A great resource for animal lovers looking to prepare healthy and complete food for their pets! Lots of useful information about the nutritional content of the recipe's ingredients - really instills confidence that the diets will provide all the goodness our pet need.
Answers Troublesome Beginner Questions and More.......2007-06-26
Before I switched to a raw diet, I had some troubling questions that I couldn't find answers to that I would trust.
1.) How do I know my dog is getting the correct nutrition? I can`t afford a nutritionist for myself, I certainly can't hire one for my canine best friend. I don't want to hurt her.
2.) How much will it cost?
3.) How hard will it be to do, and can I find the supplies?
4.) Why is my dog throwing up all the time, and the vet isn't sure why? I have her on meat based kibble, but will this help?
The answers to all of this are covered in Dr. Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats. I learned it's very easy to provide balanced nutrition for your pet, with easy to follow recipes which take ingredients you can find most anywhere. It wasn't the advice of tossing a bowl of raw chicken necks and let them munch, which I read on another book's review had made someone's dog extremely sick. The base recipe calls for ground turkey, vegetables, cooking oil, and oatmeal. It couldn't be easier. I mix it with other bits and cuts of meat, offer fruit for the occasional treat, and the problems my dog previously had have vanished. She used to have gas all the time, and even though I used a meat based, high end kibble, she threw up on average of about once every two weeks.
She been on this diet for months and hasn't thrown up since. She also has more energy (being a Boston Terrier cross, that's a bit scary, really...)
Dr. Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats is scientific in layman's terms and supports the claims they make with experience and intelligence. It lacks the sensational claims I'd found on the internet, replacing it with common sense and thoughtful advice, taking you step by step through how your pet's digestive system works, why you might want to consider a raw diet, what nutrition means (I learned a few things about handling my own food), and beyond. There's information about choosing a dog breed for you, vaccinations, puppy/kitten/pregnancy care, how to prevent many illnesses or problems, and how to deal with them if they happen. I was impressed that there was even information about the grieving process when you lose them, and how to help a terminally ill pet cope.
I highly recommend this book because it took the swamp of information out there and brings it together to make sense. I checked it out from the library (as mentioned, I'm a skeptic) and it made a believer out of me before I was 25% done. I now own my own copy, and wouldn't be without it.
This makes the 2nd Copy I've bought.......2007-06-20
I'd purchased this book before, then loaned it to someone only to never see it again.
In the aftermath of the Pet Food Poisonings, this is one book that I feel every pet owner should have on their shelf. The recipies are easy and my animals love it!
Overwhelming but worth it.......2007-06-17
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about cooking for their pets. It has several basic recipes for both dogs & cats with lists of ingredients you can substitute to change it up.
At first I was completely overwhelmed by the information in this book. I bought it after the pet food recall so that I could begin cooking for my 2 cats. I read the first chapters about the pet food industry and general pet nutrition, and was excited to get to the recipes.
The recipes, I must've read through 4 times before deciding I just couldn't do it. I went to a holistic pet food store and they sold me a bunch of supplements and told me to just cook up a chicken & add a little of this & a little of that. The chicken recipe lasted 1 week, and as I added these supplements each day I began to realize that this was all completely unscientific, and I felt like I may be over supplementing my cats.
So I went back to the book. I wrote up a list of all the ingredients I would need to make the supplement recipe in the book and headed out to the health food store. I found everything there for about $80 (in Manhattan) -- but it will last months.
I whipped up 2 recipes last weekend and split it up into daily portions & froze. One cat was completely enthused while the other is taking time to adjust. But the book also tells you how to ween your cat off canned food & onto a homemade diet. It's working great.
If you think cooking for your pet will be easy, it's not. But with patience & practice you can get a routine down and feel confident that you are making the best possible choice for your cats & dogs.
Dr. Pitcairn's book.......2007-06-08
I bought this book on the recommendation of many people on various cat-related lists. Because of the recent pet food problems, I decided that we really needed to be more "pro-active" in our pets' care. This is a good place to start. Easy to read, but not simplistic, starts with the basics. I recommend this book to responsible pet owners.

Book Description
The heartwarming and unforgettable story of a family in the making and the
wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really matters in life
John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same.
Marley quickly grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound streamroller of a Labrador retriever, a dog like no other. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, flung drool on guests, stole women's undergarments, and ate nearly everything he could get his mouth around, including couches and fine jewelry. Obedience school did no good—Marley was expelled. Neither did the tranquilizers the veterinarian prescribed for him with the admonishment, "Don't hesitate to use these."
And yet Marley's heart was pure. Just as he joyfully refused any limits on his behavior, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley shared the couple's joy at their first pregnancy, and their heartbreak over the miscarriage. He was there when babies finally arrived and when the screams of a seventeen-year-old stabbing victim pierced the night. Marley shut down a public beach and managed to land a role in a feature-length movie, always winning hearts as he made a mess of things. Through it all, he remained steadfast, a model of devotion, even when his family was at its wit's end. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms.
Is it possible for humans to discover the key to happiness through a bigger-than-life, bad-boy dog? Just ask the Grogans.

He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, flung drool on guests, stole women's undergarments, and ate nearly everything he could get his mouth around, including couches and fine jewelry. Obedience school did no goodMarley was expelled. Neither did the tranquilizers the veterinarian prescribed for him with the admonishment, ""Don't hesitate to use these.""

Great Story.......2007-06-25
I finish Marley and Me, as well as, gave this to others as gifts. Everyone loves the stories - happy and sad. This story is as much a look into the life of Marley and his owners. While I disagree with some of the methods the owners use to change Marley's behavior - mainly to have him stop jumping - I focused on the love and good times they all shared.
After reading this book, it reminded me how much work a dog really is, but if your willing to be a good owner, you get this back times 100!
I listened to this story as an audible book and found that it enhanced the experience - it is read by the author and towards the end of the book, I can hear him getting choked up.
I recommend this book for young readers to adults.
Entertaining...enjoyable....every dog lover .......2007-06-25
a must read - laugh outloud for all dog lovers. I can totally relate to pretty much all of this book, I would read and just look at my dog and say "yes he means you....". Great book.
Lightweight Book.......2007-06-24
I guess you know in advance that you're setting the literary bar pretty low when you pick up a book about a naughty dog, but I'm a dog lover and thought it would be a nice summer read. It didn't even make that grade.
Marley isn't the world's worst dog, but his behavior rings familiar to most dog owners. He's got a thunderstorm phobia and some separation anxiety. But his greatest obstacle is inconsistent and indulgent behavior of his owners, who let him on the furniture, and into the shower, and don't correct him when he destroys furniture or pulls at his leash. In general, these are easily correctable problems. In fact, when the author finally got serious about teaching the dog not to jump on people, it took only three repetitions of firm behavior to cure him of this bad habit. Too bad the owner didn't do this years earlier, and similarly take the time to correct the dog's other misbehaviors. The title of this book should reflect the owners' failures and not blame the "world's worst dog".
But that's not even the worst part about the book. The book fails because it's simply not very interesting. There are long passages about his wife's menstrual cycles and their attempts to have kids, their sex life and blah blah blah. It's just some couple's daily routine. I mean there's no particular point, or insight, or meaning, or storytelling arc. It's just a lot of domestic stuff. We all live through the same sorts of issues, and it's not terribly interesting to me to read about another couple's issues. This isn't a bad book, just a boring one.
World's worst dog OWNERS!.......2007-06-19
This book was very upsetting as the owners of Marley repeatedly show their ignorance and cruelty when they repeatedly abuse him and then they had the nerve to make money from it by writing this book. The Grogans even get to a point where they are inviting friends over to kick poor Marley in hopes of training him not to jump. One day Mrs. Grogan is found beating on him after he did something wrong and had to be pulled off of Marley and on a regular basis Mr. Grogan would choke the dog in hopes of getting him to behave. Even as years and same behavior went on they refused to take the dog for proper training. Why? This is the question that is never answered. When a dog misbehaves it is because of improper or lack of training and not because the dog is bad. Don't waste your money on this piece of trash. I feel so bad for the suffering this poor dog endured!
I laughed, I cried, I fell in love. One of the best books that I have read in a long time.......2007-06-18
Following the life of an adorable puppy turned mischievous, full grown, barreling through crowds dog, Marley and Me captures every pet owners dream of having a perfect dog, and their realization that their new found companion is nothing short of a menace. This book captivates both young and old, and it shows that even the most rambunctious dogs can also be the most lovable.

Book Description
Why do dogs speak so profoundly to our inner lives? When Mark Doty decides to adopt a dog as a companion for his dying partner, he finds himself bringing home Beau, a large golden retriever, malnourished and in need of loving care. Beau joins Arden, the black retriever, to complete their family. As Beau bounds back into life, the two dogs become Mark Doty's intimate companions, his solace, and eventually the very life force that keeps him from abandoning all hope during the darkest days. Their tenacity, loyalty, and love inspire him when all else fails.
Dog Years is a remarkable work: a moving and intimate memoir interwoven with profound reflections on our feelings for animals and the lessons they teach us about life, love, and loss. Mark Doty writes about the heart-wrenching vulnerability of dogs, the positive energy and joy they bring, and the gift they bear us of unconditional love. A book unlike any other, Mark Doty's surprising meditation is radiantly unsentimental yet profoundly affecting. Beautifully written, Dog Years is a classic in the making.

only 1 chapter worth reading.......2007-05-21
This book was not written very well. It could have been so much better.
I did not care for the writing style. Also, there were not enought highlights of the postive and 90% of the book was very depressing.
Eloquent musings on the bond between man and dog..........2007-05-14
Anyone who has had a dog and especially nursed one through the end of its life will savor this book. I defy you to refrain from reaching for the Kleenex!
Dogs occupy a special place and special relationships in our lives. Their shorter life spans guarantee that the relationship will ultimately end up in grief over their passing. You feel half-ashamed grieving over "just a dog," but this memoir legitimizes the depths of those bonds and those feelings.
Dog years...a poet writes.......2007-05-13
It's obvious from reading this book that its author is a professional writer. The details of the book are heartwarming yet not overwhelming and by the end of the book, we care about its characters. The book is a history and is sentimental without bringing the reader to tears. It's told in poetic form with strong images and with caring.
BEAUTIFUL...........2007-05-10
Oh, how I loved this book. I was mesmerized by the beautiful vocabulary and writing style. I appreciated the short details of each dog's passing but still understood it through the beautiful way it's told....One of my new favorites-I LOVED IT! MR.DOTY- if you ever read this-Thank you for a beautiful book and I Hope you got a new dog.
Dog Years.......2007-05-08
I recently lost my dog to cancer and found great comfort in this book. The author weaves a story with both elements of poetic impressions and real life events. He creates a sense of a dog reality that touched me deeply and helped me through a difficult time.

Book Description
Canine Cooking That Will Have Them Begging for More
Which do you think your dog would prefer: dry kibble, mushy canned food, or a nice, nutritionally sound helping of Tuna Togetherness? Not surprisingly, most dogs would be happier -- and healthier -- with the latter, considering the dangerous preservatives, questionable ingredients, and mysterious flavoring agents often used in commercial dog food.
That's why Rudy Edalati cooked up
Barker's Grub, a cookbook filled with wholesome, easy-to-prepare meals for your mutt or your pedigreed pooch -- and you'll find all the necessary ingredients in your fridge or at the local supermarket. She includes not only fun everyday meals, but healing meals for specific health problems, as well as special diets for different life stages, such as:
* Lo Mein Barking Style: the doggie alternative for Chinese takeout
* Beef Puppy Food: just the right mix for a growing dog
* Davie's Juicy Jiggly-Wiggly Anemia Diet: a blood-boosting dish of liver, rice, and spinach
Barker's Grub is informative (there's lots of canine nutritional information to chew on), inspiring, and just plain fun. The recipes are simple and quick -- after all, it's not just about health and longevity, it's about making the most of the time you and your dog spend together.

Not as good as others about the same subject.......2007-06-09
I guess I wanted my scientific and nutritional knowledge in a dog recipe book. This book is just too joky, with no real facts to back anything up.
Why should my dogs eat better than I do?.......2007-06-01
Seriously, this book gives quite a bit of nutritional information, but it seems that the recipes are overly done for the person who just wants to give his dogs an alternative to commercial food. I find the thought of cooking a rather complicated recipe each day (or week) to be daunting. Also, though my dogs are usually anything but finicky, they have turned up their noses at several of the offerings.
Barkers Grub book made my dog happy!.......2007-05-28
I was amazed to learn that commercial pet food products are a recent happening in this country which came about in the early 1900's. Prior to that, people fed their dogs what they ate. Due to the latest scare of pet food recall I tried the recommendations found in this book, starting my dog on the road to better nutrition. At first I was skeptical but now I can't say enough about this book. My dog's coat is shiny, her stools are small, she looks great. Best of all she eats EVERYTHING I put in front of her. With commercial dog foods, there was always something left in her bowl. She doesn't have any flatuence which is amazing. I thought she wouldn't eat the vegetables that were recommended, but VOILA!, she eats the vegetables, too. I did have some rough periods where during the transition from commercial pet food to natural food, there were bouts of diarrhea which the book said would happen. But I pressed on and now that the transition period is over, the diarrhea has stopped completely. Yes, the task at first is daunting trying to cook for your pet but anything new that we start out with does take some effort but it is well worth it. I cook for an entire month then store the food in plastic containers in the freezer. I take them out as needed. I wish I knew about this book when I got her as a puppy. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about their pets! Good health and long life to our pets!
Barker's Grub.......2007-05-17
Need recipe's for feeding your dog natural ingredience? This IS the book. Packed full of information and great recipes. My dogs sit patiently and drool when they see me getting out their meals eah day. I carry the book to the supermarket when I'm ready to prepare a new meal! Your dogs will love these recipes and you'll love making them. It is so easy! No more processed food for my guys!

Book Description
We are an animal-loving population, with consumers in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom spending top dollar on their pets. This trend indicates that pet owners want the best for their dogs and cats. Scientific research shows that home-cooked meals are better for your pets?especially dogs and cats?than store-brand food. Feeding pets all-natural homemade food and treats not only provides nutritional and health benefits, but allows pet owners to meet their pet's taste preferences and special needs, and gives them the opportunity to nurture their dog or cat as they would any other member of the family.
Good Food and Bones is full of information on nutrition for your pet and dozens of stories and recipes from real animal lovers and pet owners that give an intimate, personal voice to the book.
Customer Reviews:
This book stinks!!!.......2007-05-28
This book is recipies only--zero nutritional-needs information for dogs. It has pictures of food prepared for presentation (like my dog cares...) and nothing else. Don't buy it unless you have nothing better to do than prepare food for your doggie dinner party.
Highly recommended!.......2007-04-08
I recently adopted a dog and bought this cookbook because I wanted to supplement a dry dog food diet with some yummy home cooked food. I have since made several recipes in this book and all of them have been a smashing hit with my new pooch. Big favorites are the Lip-Lickin' Liver-Lover's Sauce, chicken & rice stew, peanut butter bones, and ginger bones. I tend to use the stew recipes as a guide more than a strict recipe, sometimes swapping out different veggies and using whole wheat versions of pasta. The stew recipes are great because they are very large -- you can portion them into small containers and freeze them, and you are all set for weeks.
Fun but not functional.......2007-03-27
The book has some wonderful photographs, the layout is creative and includes color photos of every recipe. However I felt the recipes were lacking in healthy protein, carb and vegetable ratios. It is a fun book to read, but I would not recommend it to someone who is interested in educating themselves on canine nutrition.
Fun book but not what I expected.......2007-03-08
I bought this book and Barker's Grub. This book is fun, and nice to look at and does have some good recipes (especially for treats) but I honestly didn't feel comfortable cooking these recipes for my dog on a daily basis. They seemed a bit more careless and thrown together (as in = your dog will love this) and not as conscious of what's healthy and nutrious for your pup. They also seem to be items that go with your dog's processed food instead of "in lieu of." I'd recommend it if you just want something to spice it up every once in a while but not as a full-diet.
My dogs thank you........2007-02-13
This is a wonderful cookbook for our fur babies. It has fun recipes and even recipes for health problems. You can tell by seeing all the great healthy ingredients how much this author loves dogs. I want to thank her for such wonderful ideas. I thank you and my doggies thank you.

Customer Reviews:
good place to start.......2007-06-10
Having been encouraged for over 10 years to try a "natural" diet for my dogs, I finally succumbed to the pressure, and read this little book before beginning the raw regimen.
I must say, that while it is somewhat more expensive and time consuming, my dogs have never looked better. The diet requires a commitment on the part of the owner, and a little planning when traveling. However, my dogs and I have traveled across the country with no issues.
My Corgis (age 5 months to 9 years) have been on the diet since being having been weaned, and have never had to have their teeth cleaned, show no signs of skin problems, have gorgeous coats, have no "doggy" breath or body odor.
Suffice it to say that I am convinced, and will not go back to conventional processed food for them.
If highly processed food is not good for ME, how can it be good for them???
don't believe everything that you read.......2007-06-01
I picked up this book at a natural food store thinking it would be a good source of information to improve my pets' health. The book contained very little information, it was very one-sided only giving (non-referenced/non-published) success stories and not mentioning any of the many illnesses and deaths that the raw food diet has caused in many peoples beloved pets.
The book sounded good to me and I was considering giving my pets some raw bones as the book suggested, but I decided to do a little internet searching and to my horror found the stories of many peoples whose pets had died after only being on this diet for a few days. I'm so glad that I don't believe everything I read - it may have saved my pets lives.
Easy to follow, good info.......2007-05-31
I was a vet tech for a holistic vet a few years ago and she recommended this book to every client.
I followed it to make food for my own dog and cat and never had a problem. They loved it! I think the best thing about this diet is they produce less waste, A LOT less; it's amazing.
I whole-heartily recommend it to anyone with dogs and/or cats!
Not enough hands on information........2007-05-21
The book was not what I expected. A lot of redundant information on nutrients and bioavailability, a lot of lists, and a whole appendix on references and resources. The list of three diets by weight, a ten pound, fifty pound, and a hundred pound animal was not very useful. My dog is seventy pounds. I was looking for something much more basic in the how to and where to get it. I wanted to know more about chicken necks and turkey necks and not the vitamin or nutrient components of them. The large number of antidotal stores running for many pages may have been interesting if your pet had that specific problem but they are not definitive as to cause and effect or anything else. I wasted my money.
incorrect medical info.......2007-03-22
Hi - my husband, a physician, and I, read this book and found some information that is medically incorrect; so we have lost faith in the author's education and do not feel comfortable putting our dog's health in her hands. This writer might have some correct info but she also has some uneducated ideas that she states as fact. On another note, my friend has her dog on this diet, for only a couple weeks now, and he's less itchy ... with out the raw chicken bones... of course ...
so now I am still trying to find a trust-worthy book ...

Mark Haddon's bitterly funny debut novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, is a murder mystery of sorts--one told by an autistic version of Adrian Mole. Fifteen-year-old Christopher John Francis Boone is mathematically gifted and socially hopeless, raised in a working-class home by parents who can barely cope with their child's quirks. He takes everything that he sees (or is told) at face value, and is unable to sort out the strange behavior of his elders and peers.
Late one night, Christopher comes across his neighbor's poodle, Wellington, impaled on a garden fork. Wellington's owner finds him cradling her dead dog in his arms, and has him arrested. After spending a night in jail, Christopher resolves--against the objection of his father and neighbors--to discover just who has murdered Wellington. He is encouraged by Siobhan, a social worker at his school, to write a book about his investigations, and the result--quirkily illustrated, with each chapter given its own prime number--is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.
Haddon's novel is a startling performance. This is the sort of book that could turn condescending, or exploitative, or overly sentimental, or grossly tasteless very easily, but Haddon navigates those dangers with a sureness of touch that is extremely rare among first-time novelists. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is original, clever, and genuinely moving: this one is a must-read. --Jack Illingworth, Amazon.ca
Book Description
Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched. And he detests the color yellow.
This improbable story of Christopher’s quest to investigate the suspicious death of a neighborhood dog makes for one of the most captivating, unusual, and widely heralded novels in recent years.
Download Description
Narrated by a fifteen-year-old autistic savant obsessed with Sherlock Holmes, this dazzling novel weaves together an old-fashioned mystery, a contemporary coming-of-age story, and a fascinating excursion into a mind incapable of processing emotions.
Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched. And he detests the color yellow. Although gifted with a superbly logical brain, Christopher is autistic. Everyday interactions and admonishments have little meaning for him. Routine, order, and predictability shelter him from the messy, wider world. Then, at fifteen, Christopher's carefully constructed world falls apart when he finds his neighbor's dog, Wellington, impaled on a garden fork, and he is initially blamed for the killing.
Christopher decides that he will track down the real killer and turns to his favorite fictional character, the impeccably logical Sherlock Holmes, for inspiration. But the investigation leads him down some unexpected paths and ultimately brings him face to face with the dissolution of his parents' marriage. As he tries to deal with the crisis within his own family, we are drawn into the workings of Christopher's mind.
And herein lies the key to the brilliance of Mark Haddon's choice of narrator: The most wrenching of emotional moments are chronicled by a boy who cannot fathom emotion. The effect is dazzling, making for a novel that is deeply funny, poignant, and fascinating in its portrayal of a person whose curse and blessing is a mind that perceives the world literally.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is one of the freshest debuts in years: a comedy, a heartbreaker, a mystery story, a novel of exceptional literary merit that is great fun to read.
"Mark Haddon's portrayal of an emotionally dissociated mind is a superb achievement. He is a wise and bleakly funny writer with rare gifts of empathy."

The Best Book I've Read in Awhile.......2007-06-27
If you are on the fence about whether to read this book, do yourself a favor and READ IT! It is easily the best teen fiction book that I've ever read...one of the best as an adult as well. I am looking for more books written by Haddon!
Brilliant and unusual!.......2007-06-24
I'll never forget reading this. It is wonderful, especially if you work with or know kids who are "interesting" Buy this and keep it. You won't be disappointed.
I loved this book.......2007-06-19
This is a lovely, unique book. The writer certainly has his finger on the pulse of autism. While a novel, it is a simple, delightful read, following the main character who is autistic, written in the first person, on his quest to find out who had murdered a neighborhood dog. Where it takes him, however, is a journey to self-discovery and family secrets. The book also contains visual expressions of what the character sees and how he thinks at times, and thus, probably would not translate well to audio. At times, the book is funny and sad for the reader as we sift through the seemingly emotionally detached world in which the character lives, yet we are engrossed by the details and inane observations of the things he does focus on. This book is one of my all time favorites and I have recommended it to many people, all of who have enjoyed it immensely. As I read this book, I wondered if everyone doesn't have a touch of autism in themselves...like when you talk with someone and they have a seed between their teeth and you can't stop thinking about the seed and whether you should tell the person and ultimately, you have no idea what your conversation entailed because you obsessed over the seed and retained nothing of the discussion. On the otherhand, you could feel the anguish of parenting a child with autism and the daily struggles they faced handling the child's repetive and obsessive behaviors, tantrums and phobias. I couldn't put this book down and finished it in two days. There's a few math equations in the book as the boy is a bit of a mathematical savant, but if you aren't a math wizard yourself, it's simple enough to skim through that without missing anything relevent in the storyline. All in all, this book is a great summer read, a great rainy weekend read, or a great dreary winter read.
not too much story development.......2007-06-18
There's not too much story development, the so-called "curious incident" has been solved around 1/3 of this thin bk. But what's special about this bk is to let readers understand why an autistic would behave in some socially odd way (eg shouting/crying out of no reason, afraid to go to new places, like to count things, having obsession over some things). It's written in the 1st person thru the eyes of a 15-year old autistic.
i'm sorry that i threw it away as soon as i finished reading it.
A Great Read.......2007-06-18
This book is full of humor, sadness and mystery. The more I read, the more I enjoyed and appreciated it. It's an easy book to read (except for the occasional quadratic equation), and I haven't laughed out loud that much in a long time. Highly recommended.
