Who can resist the allure of the hidden wilderness water hole? Certainly not one rhino. Not two tigers. Nor three toucans. Pretty soon the delicious pool is drawing moose, catfish, pandas, tortoises... and more than 100 other critters from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and beyond. But is it our imagination or is that rhino-sized water hole dwindling to a mere shadow of its former self, a puddle not fit for eight ladybugs, let alone 10 kangaroos? As the seasons change across the world, and the animals get thirstier, the water supply diminishes. Eventually, even the flowery-shirted frog that has stoically lingered through the drought packs his suitcase and takes off. The only hope now is a drop of rain on the parched earth...
With his usual elaborate detail, Graeme Base, mad genius behind Animalia, The Eleventh Hour: A Curious Mystery, and other wild and wonderful titles, presents a one-of-a-kind counting book. Naturally, Base would never be content to stick with a simple 1 through 10 format. Readers of all ages will linger over each spread, first counting the highlighted animals and giggling at the translation of their grunts and growls (the moose's "Moo, moo, mooooooiii!" means "Hey, get your hoof out of my ear!"). Then it's time to check out the diminishing size of the die-cut hole in the pond. And finally, readers will want to find each of the 10 additional animals cleverly hidden in every illustration, based on the silhouetted creatures in the border. A safari on paper--with an environmental and mathematical education thrown in for good measure. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
The long-awaited companion to the best-selling Animalia!
Graeme Base is back-with an exciting and fun new counting book! Children will love counting from one to 10 as animals of the world gather around a water hole. As one rhino gives way to two tigers, then three toucans, on up to 10 kangaroos, die-cut pages reveal the water hole in 10 different worldwide habitats, from African plains to Himalayan mountains to the Australian outback. But the water hole keeps shrinking, and with it the number of frolicking frogs. Can anything bring back the water that the animals all need to survive? Careful readers will find additional animals, many of them endangered, silhouetted in the borders of every spread and hiding within every landscape.
A stunning fusion of counting book, puzzle book, storybook, and art book, The Water Hole features the layers of interest that make Graeme Base's books among the world's best-loved picture books.

Not appropriate for school-age kids.......2007-05-10
Don't get me wrong, this is a really great book. This book was just not what I expected. Illustrations were great and words in this book were minimal - very appropriate for preschool kids. I had intended this for my school-age kids and it was too simplistic for them. Also, this book make it sound like the earth will restore itself on its own (raining solving drought problem) when in fact, the earth needs our help to restore it by not wrecking havoc Mother Nature.
favorite children gift.......2007-02-07
I give this book to children all the time and the joy is given ten fold back
Environmentally Correct.......2007-01-15
The person who received this book used it to promote water savings tips to her elementary school students who greatly enjoyed finding the hidden surprises in the beautiful illustrations.
The Water Hole.......2007-01-03
Beautiful pictures, educational short story that babies remember and enjoy hearing over and over again.
This book made my students' jaws drop........2006-11-04
I am a second grade teacher with a class that loses its ability to focus each day after lunch and unfortunately this is the only time that I can fit in Math and Science. One day we were learning about habitats and how animals have to adapt in order to survive if something changes in their habitat. Well by minute 20 of the lesson my children could no longer sit still and I wasn't quite sure that some of them were "getting it". So I brought out "The Water Hole". All of my children sat on the floor in front of me while I showed them the cover of the book and discussed the author. (By the way, my students now think that Australia is the coolest place in the world because of Graeme Base)
Anyway - when I began to read the first page of this book, my students were unable to keep their mouths closed. And for a change - there weren't any sounds coming out. My children were AMAZED. The illustrations are so brilliant and detailed. The only time my students said anything through the entire story was when they wanted me to wait and let them look at the pictures more. Luckily I have two copies of this book! :-)
I'm not going to spoil the end of the book, but I'll just say that the students finally understood the concept of animals needing to adapt or move when their habitats change. For two weeks my students would read this book. Everytime they'd look for more and more secrets. "The Water Hole" is a fabulous book that EVERY teacher needs in her library.

Well loved in our tub!.......2007-03-31
My son had a couple bath books that he loved, so I decided to add this one since we had to read the others so many times in a row. This quickly became his very favorite!!! He is 17 months and now "reads" it to me in the tub, babbling and turning pages.
Fun for baby, Big Help for mom.......2006-11-01
We bought this book along with the "Who lives in the pond" 8mos ago, when our baby was 10mos.
She was always trying to stand up and get out of the bathtub.
Now she sits in the tub "reading" her book.
Then the problem was that she never wanted to get out of the tub, so now we keep the other book in the bench where we dry and dress her.
With this books, bath time is now very fun for both of us.
Great bath book!.......2006-08-02
My 9 month old daughter loves this bath book! She likes to play with the book in the bath tub and watches me read her the story.
Great Water Fun.......2005-02-05
My 6 mo old loves the book. He plays w/it in the tub every time he is getting a bath. The poem is very pleasant & the illustrations are informative, bright & colorful. Great find for the chewing babies & their rough/grabby little hands.
Fun to read (and chew on).......2004-06-05
This book is fun to read to a baby of any age. My son (who is 6 months) sometimes likes to look at the pictures, but also likes to chew on the book (gums only of course), which is perfectly fine since it is made of a waterproof material similar to that of an inner tube. Not my favorite book in the collection, but I do like taking it out from time to time.

Wonderful book!.......2006-02-20
Don't let the size of this book fool you! I wasn't sure what book to buy to learn about teaching my baby to swim, but I'm so glad I picked this one. The photos are absolutely beautiful and the book is quality enough to place on a coffee table. I was greatly inspired. The exercises are simple and clearly explained. I was able to remember many of them after only skimming it when I took my baby to the pool for the first time - which, thanks to this book, went much better than I expected. My five month old took to the water very well. The author also clearly stated many safety issues to be aware of - for which I was very thankful.
This is a great book. I highly recommend it. ...even if you only buy it for the pictures!
Excellent How-To Book.......2005-08-18
This book is conversational yet concise, and packed with important information for how to safely swim with your baby from newborn into toddlerhood. The many photo illustrations are detailed, clear and beautiful. The author answers important frequently asked questions about water safety and learning to swim. After reading this book and viewing the images, I feel confident taking my 4-month-old into the water for his first swim, and being able to expand his lessons if he likes it.

Customer Reviews:
Photos outstanding; writing is sometimes a little hard to follow.......2005-07-06
This book is so-so, only because it doesn't explain in detail how to actually do everything. It may say "do this" or "do that" but it doesn't explain exactly the best way to go about doing some of the things.
The authors try really hard to explain what needs to be done, but it must be difficult to write how to exactly teach an infant to swim without showing moving photos, as in a video. It might also be because it's written by someone in England and I'm in the U.S. It's all English, but it's not 100% the English I'm used to.
The photos are outstanding, and I did get my 6 mo. old daughter to float the first time I tried what was suggested. I really like how the author stresses that the experiences and the joy is what it's all about, as opposed to having to build new skills each time you take your baby into the water.
Beautiful Book.......2003-09-14
This book doesn't just teach babies how to swim, it teaches an attitude towards them..I'm learning how to teach patiently and learn that there's no dead line. We *are* having fun at the same time. I live in a country where making babies swim sounds strange and this book's helping alot, I don't need to council anyone. I bought another resource when I got this book (a VHS) and it wasn't good at all, it was kind of teaching by force. I stopped using it and I only follow this great book (great photoes too!). Thanks to the author!
Excellent book for getting your baby into swimming.......2002-12-06
I bought this book when my baby was 6 weeks old. I love to swim and wanted to introduce her to the water in a fun, safe way. This book was outstanding because it provided easy to follow method. It seemed to answer just about all my questions. I referred to it (and still do) constantly. I probably read it three times to absorb the information. It gave instruction on how to: introduce the baby to water, take your baby underwater, swim with your baby, games to play and steps to get your toddler headed towards swimming. My baby is now an 18 month old toddler who absolutely loves the water. She will jump from me and "swim" to the ladder (she needs some help from me for floatation - she tends to want to go vertical through the water now) she can hold her breath really well and knows when she surfaces that she can take a breath (and when she goes under to hold it). This book provided the perfect approach for us - never pushing, always make sure the baby is having fun and let her progress at her rate. I can't stress how important that is - sometimes she would plateau for a couple of months before making progress again but it isn't about forcing them to swim - it is about making sure they are comfortable in the water. It did cover safety of your baby too. But this is not a "water safe" your baby in six weeks approach type book. This is a slower more baby friendly book. The pictures are awesome and as one person commented before it would be a great coffee table book. My daughter loved to look at the pictures of the babies swimming too. I can't say enough good things about this book. If you want to get your baby or toddler into the water without fear I would recommend this book. Also Water Baby A first book of water skills by Lauren Heston is good too. I thought this book had more details but they go nice together.
Excellent resource (good coffee table book too).......2001-11-01
This book is written along the lines of a traditional child-rearing guide but is laid out with better design and a stronger flow of readability. Essentially it emphasizes the multi-sensory experience and confidence swimming brings to baby and the bonding that occurs with the parents. Excellent color photography add to the high-gloss paper and hardcover binding. A little thin but packed with good information. Highly recommended for new parents.

This is a great resource if you are a new parent, pregnant, or are a child swim instructor. It gives you a lesson by lesson outline. Very useful!
Early Swim Lessons.......2007-04-12
Teach your baby to swim with this proven step-by-step process. You'll enjoy watching your little one steadily become more confident in the water.
Step by Step process.......2007-04-11
This book goes in-depth into teaching your child to swim. It builds confidence in your child as well as teaching him/her survival skills. The approach is child-centered, not "sink-or-swim" methods. I would recommend this book if you have a newborn (four months) or an older child (5-6 years old) getting a late start on swimming.
Excellent Book!.......2007-04-10
The photos and graphics in this book (learn to SWIM) are by far the best I have ever seen in this type of book. The pictures look like they were taken by a National Geographic Photographer! While this is typical Rob and Kathy McKay instruction I especially like the way they give tips and techniques for each age group of new swimmer (from 6 months to 4 years old).
I have found all of Rob and Kathy McKay's products (including videos, book, and instruction) to be the best on the market for teaching babies and young children to swim and ENJOY the water safely. It is no wonder that Rob McKay was twice recognized at the International Swimming Hall of Fame "for outstanding contribution to Aquatic Safety," and as the person who "best exemplifies the teaching philosophy of Virginia Hunt Newman." For those of you who don't know Virginia Hunt Newman, she is considered the "mother of infant swimming" and is a pioneering advocate of the gentle, positive approach to teaching babies to swim.

Customer Reviews:
Cutest bath book.......2007-02-12
Okay, so my son doesn't actually read this in the bath. He's taken to chewing and swallowing chunks off of the board books so we had to make some changes. I particularly like this book because of the material it's made of, its durability, the story and the pictures that I ask my son to point to. I have all of the Baby Einstein bath books; this one is by far the best one. "Water Water Everywhere" comes in a close second.
Colorful and Durable.......2007-02-01
I bought this book for my baby when she was 10 months because she had been chewing on her board books and destroying them. Not only does this book hold up it has become one of her favorites. It's bright and colorful and she loves the rhymes. She will find this book amongst her toys and bring it to me to read. She's 12 months now and she's been learning body parts. When I read the passage in the book about the "long-nosed alligator" she points to her nose and smiles.
Great Book.......2006-07-10
My 10 month old son loves this book, we have to continously read and reread this book or he will cry, real tears and all. My husband, the grandparents, and I dont even look to read this one. I would recommend this book for any baby the pictures are bright and colorful, and the story is short and sweet, enjoy with your little one.
A favorite of ours.......2006-06-30
My son is 7-months old and he loves this book as well as some of the other Baby Einstein bath books. He has a tub full of toys but always chooses 4 or 5 books to read and nothing else. The only gripe I have is that the author goes a little far just to make it rhyme, even if it doesn't quite make sense. He's too young to understand now, but later I'm going to have to explain "...they don't float because they sink." That's not a reason.
favorite short fun book .......2006-03-22
My 3 1/2 month old loves this book! We have been reading and looking at the pictures for 2 months already! I love this book because it is short and can keep his baby attention span. It is soft enough for him to hold and put in his mouth. Great present!!!

Maisy the marvelous mouse is ready to take the plunge--but she needs the assistance of young readers to get properly prepped for the pool. Dressed for the arctic tundra, this rodent has a lot of disrobing to do. By lifting flaps and pulling tabs, kids can help Maisy peel down to her skivvies. After removing her blue hat and scarf, brown boots, red coat, gray sweater, green trousers, purple T-shirt, yellow socks, and orange undies, Maisy is finally ready to don her rainbow-striped swimsuit and leap into the water (hopefully mice can swim). Youngsters will delight in Lucy Cousins's charming illustrations, as well as the tugging, lifting, and sliding involved in this interactive book. The many colors and clothes provide an excellent learning opportunity, but kids will appreciate Maisy Goes Swimming purely as a splash of fun. (Baby to preschool) --Brangien Davis
Customer Reviews:
A fix for one problem.......2006-11-02
We are big Maisy fans around our house. But I wish I had listened to the reviewer who said that the tabs and flaps are cumbersome on this book (and we've got dozens with which to compare it). Also, the story line just doesn't work. She's in winter clothes and takes them off to go swimming. I guess if she's going to an indoor Y... Here's a solution for the obvious problem though. So you don't have to go back through the book yourself to put the clothes back on Maisy before your child reads it again, just read the book back to front with your child and put her clothes back on. That actually makes the experience a little more interesting.
Maisy the Swimmer is Great.......2005-10-08
Maisy captures a child's attention. Maisy is going swimming. Most preschool children love to play in water. This book teaches children their colors and the names of articles of clothes.
Bobbing along.......2004-05-21
Good old Maisy. Her adventures tend to be as large or small as the daily activites that children themselves partake in. Appearing in cleverly constructed (and mighty strong) books, Maisy is cheery without ever becoming pendatic. She's light-hearted but never tiring. Maisy is, in fact, the perfect companion for any child beginning to read. She is also a great help to those parents that want their kids to see reading as a fun activity.
In this particular Maisy venture, the little white mouse wants to go swimming. The weather outside must be frightful because our heroine is covered from tip to tail in warm woolly winter clothing. It is up to the child reader to remove each article as instructed. So off goes the hat! Open goes the coat. Away goes the sweater, the trousers (love those Lucy Cousins British words), t-shirt, socks, and bright orange underwear. Then the child places the swimsuit onto Maisy and off goes the cheery mousey for a dip in the pool.
The book's a treat, no question. Parents reading it to their children had better put the book back together correctly before another reading, however. No child would want to read through a book where Maisy's hat was already off or her swimsuit was already on. That would spoil half the fun. The trick of removing or outfitting Maisy in these articles of clothing come in the book's clever construction. Using thick paper that can stand up to little hands, it's a treat to watch Cousins's thick lined drawings moving up or down. The only part of the book that's a bit flimsy is, sadly the last picture. In theory, if you pull on a specific tab, Lucy goes bobbing along in the water. In practice, she's more likely to get stuck, or the tab may just get pulled out altogether. On the whole however, this a cute creation. Any child who's a fan of Cousins, mice, or just the trick or interacting with a book's character physically will have a ball with Maisy's small scale adventure. A bucket o' fun.
Lots of fun to read.......2002-07-07
This book has a very simple concept - taking off all of Maisy's many layers of clothing and then putting on her bathing suit so that she can go swimming. My 2 year old son loves it to pieces - literally. Unfortunately it's not very robust, but even now with half the pages in tatters it's still one of his favorites.
What a great book!.......2002-03-18
A fantastic Maisy book - my daughter (2) loves it. Not only do we get to read about another wonderful Maisy adventure - Maisy getting ready to go swimming but we help Maisy get undressed and into her swimming costume. It had really helped my daughter give her clothes a name and also which bit of the body they go on. This book enables you to help Maisy get dressed and undress by use of flaps and pull tabs - my daughter loves doing that as well. It has helped her understand the concept of on and off, up and down, and colours.

Book Description
Barbara Harper outlines the elements of gentle birthing: support from loved ones, a reassuring and quiet environment with soft lighting, and minimal medical intervention. She shows you how to plan a meaningful, family-centered birth experience and discusses the many alternatives available, providing a new model of maternity care that reduces the need for high-tech crisis intervention and focuses instead on preparation and good health for mother and child.
With Cesarean section rates in some hospitals at more than 50%, women are acknowledging that childbirth reform is an essential aspect of reclaiming responsibility for our bodies and our lives.
Includes information on:
• Giving birth in a freestanding birthing center, at home, or in a hospital birthing room.
• Finding a primary care-giver who shares your philosophy of birth, whether midwife, doctor, or both.
• Deciding how to best use current technologies.
• Practical advice for couples wishing to explore the option of waterbirth, a choice that maximizes the attributes of water as a natural, pain-relieving relaxant and an alternative to drugs and their unwanted side effects.

An interesting read.......2007-03-28
I did find this book very informative. I feel like it made me think or ask questions about why we tend to trust doctors more than our own bodies. Don't get me wrong I think doctors know very much what they are talking about most the time. But it did make sence to me how the book talked about how a normal healthy pregnancy many times is rushed or sent in for a c-section all for the sake of time. There were a few biased oppinions in the book. And some sections seemed repetative ( this is the reason for the 4 ) But I think over all it was not a waist of time. And as I do with all information I recieve it was taken with a grain of salt. Additional advice: try checking it out at the library before you decide to buy it or not. Depending on your beliefs this may or may not be the book for you.
For the mom who wants to take charge of her own birth.......2006-09-01
Reading this book made me feel angry about how women in childbirth are treated in the United States. It also empowered me to make certain decisions for myself and share information with others interested in taking charge of their births. If you're a mom who's happy to turn over your pregnant body and baby to someone else, I wouldn't read it because its tone can seem a bit radical at times. I would suggest this book to any woman who expresses interest in more gentle options, or birth the way it ought to be. I'm happy to say I took charge of my own birth a year after reading this book. I brought a beautiful child into the world at home, attended by my family and midwife, and in water. Thanks, Barbara Harper!
Wonderful.......2006-07-15
I had my own ideas about birth, but this really encouraged some ideas I had repressed. It is both empowering and informational. I think that this book should be mandatory for all medical professional's in the feild of obstetrics, as well as all expecting parents. I would reccomend this book to my pregnant friends.
Political Statement or Reference Book?.......2005-07-11
While this book did tell me most of what I wanted to know about "gentle birth", it did so in such a biased manner that I had to double check any of the information in the book that I wanted validated. The book hides its information in a political statement about birth and many historical birth facts aimed at discrediting doctors and hospitals. While that was interesting, it was not what I was looking for. This book is a good read, but I would not go so far as to call it a guide, and "informed" is only from one (very biased) position.
Lots of research citation.......2005-05-27
Many books are written on birthing noutside the hospital, but most of them come from authors who are extremely biased. You can't avoid that, but this is a book which uses scientific studies to back up its biases, convincing the reader that the author supports natural childbirth because it has been proven safer, not because they are part of some conspiracy theory. I literally would pick up natural childbirth books and flip right to the back to see if the author cited medical studies. Most don't, but this has a good resource section. She cites statistic, national averages, medical journals, research studies, quotes from medical association conferences, etc. There is also a good history of midwifery and obstetrics - very interesting.
Wanting to give birth outside a hospital is not necessarily the most popular decision and those who support hospital births often say, "I would never forgive myself if something happened to the baby". However, most people have not done the research or read the material to make an informed decision. I wanted to find scientific research that proves that a "low-risk" birth outside a hospital is as safe or safer than those in a hospital. This has been the most helpful book so far.
I just discovered "Obsteric Myths Versus Research Realities" by Henci Goer which seems like it also may have good scientific backup. You may want to check it out. This book is great for learning little statistics and facts to reference when friends and family members question the wisdom and safety of non-traditional birth. If you're going to go against the mainstream, be well-informed, not just easily persuaded.
For another non-citation book, I also enjoyed Midwife's Pregnancy and Childbirth Book by Marion McCartney and Antonia Van Der Meer, which talks about the possible interventions you may encounter at a hospital, why you may need them, why you may not want them; as well as other good information

Book Description
Little Wombat is back! Award-winning author and illustrator Charles Fuge--whose Sometimes I Curl Up in a Ball sold 106,000 copies and charmed critics and children alike--has created a new adventure for his ever-popular character. It's a fun-filled tale about discovering new friends and appreciating others' differences.
Fans of Charles Fuge's Little Wombat will rejoice at the adorable creature's return--and at the introduction of an appealing new friend for his hero. And what an unusual animal Platypus is: he waddles when he walks, has a funny fuzzy face, and most special of all, can swim just like a fish. Little Wombat would love to do that too. But are wombats meant for the water...or is he better off staying on dry land?
Every child who has ever eyed the swimming pool nervously will happily follow Little Wombat's success.
Praise for Sometimes I like to Curl Up In a Ball!
"With a repertoire of comic expressions worthy of Nathan Lane...[t]his book from a British duo is silly to the core, but it is also a pointed paean to the power of unscheduled play."---Publishers Weekly
"This book celebrates the world of a preschooler with verve and excitement...Wombat is buoyant and darling, charming and fun."--School Library Journal
Customer Reviews:
Cute..........2007-05-25
"Sometimes I Like to Curl Up in a Ball" was SOOOOO good, that this one doesn't really compare. I like the lesson that you can learn to swim and accomplish things, but the story is more narrated and longer...kind of wordy for a board book. Better for older child, not really for a 15-month old.
Brillent!.......2007-04-04
Possible the best book so far illustrated by Charles Fuge, Wombats learns how to make a friend, and how to swim. My son loves the book and so do I.
Enjoyable fun.......2006-11-07
My 4 year old enjoys the Little Wombat series and this book did not dissappoint. The whimsical artwork and rhymes delight his young mind. He enjoys reading them with me and "reading" them back to me.
A Wombat, A Platypus, And Water Safety.......2006-07-16
This is a delightful and unusual children's book about respect, friendship, and water safety. In the beginning Little Wombat thinks Platypus is odd, but Platypus rescues Little Wombat after he falls into the water. Platypus then teaches Little Wombat to swim, and they become friends. The message is great for young kids: respect and kindness for those different than you. There is a secondary message of water safety that many young non-swimmers will appreciate: swimming can be fun, but safety is important (Platypus even teaches Little Wombat to "never swim on a full tummy.") In the end Little Wombat, Platypus, Koala, and Rabbit all have a great time, and all learn important lessons about friendship.
The illustrations in the book are first rate, and the story, while simple, is a good one that will be sure to captivate young readers.
