Great Fixes Excellent Read.......2007-05-17
This book is worth it's weight in gold. Easy to read, plenty of illustrations. No one who gets on a bike over 21 should be allowed on the road without reading this manual for repair and maintenance.
Very complete.......2007-05-13
This is the best book i ever laid my eyes on about bike maintenance and repair. You will get a good understanding about all types of bikes and its parts and how they work separately and as a whole. If you don't know how that little thing is called, no problem, this book has it all. You'll probably save a lot a money on bike maintenance because you'll get all the knowledge you need to take care of your bike with confidence if you follow all Todd's tips. I became a better rider after purchased this book!!
Lots of Good Info.......2007-05-07

Book Description
"This is the best book about music I've read in years, and a gripping piece of social history."-Brian Eno
When Muddy Waters came to London at the start of the 1960s, a kid from Boston called Joe Boyd was his tour manager; when Dylan went electric at the Newport Festival, Joe Boyd was plugging in his guitar; when the summer of love got going, Joe Boyd was running UFO, the coolest club in London; when a bunch of club regulars called Pink Floyd recorded their first single, Joe Boyd was the producer; when a young songwriter named Nick Drake wanted to give his demo tape to someone, he chose Joe Boyd.
More than any previous sixties music autobiography, Joe Boyd's
White Bicycles offers the real story of what it was like to be there at the time. As well as the sixties heavy-hitters, this book also offers wonderfully vivid portraits of a whole host of other musicians: everyone from the great jazzman Coleman Hawkins to the folk diva Sandy Denny, Lonnie Johnson to Eric Clapton, Sister Rosetta Tharpe to Fairport Convention.
Record and film producer
Joe Boyd was born in Boston in 1942 and graduated from Harvard in 1964. He went on to produce Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, R.E.M., and many others. He produced the documentary
Jimi Hendrix and the film
Scandal. In 1980 he started Hannibal Records and ran it for twenty years. He lives in London.

Thank You For Sending Me This Book.......2007-05-25
A brief confession: I have a deep passion for music of the 60's and when I read a review of this book in the New York Daily News I knew I had to read it. And I wasn't disappointed. Not being familiar with many of the performers mentioned(except for Nick Drake, and that's because of the Volkswagon commercial)I think I might buy that companion CD one of these days. Joe Boyd has been gifted with Memory and he uses it to the fullest here. White Bicycles is a fascinating and engrossing read, especially for anyone wondering what all the fuss was about. Thanks again!
White Bicycles.......2007-05-09
I bought this book for my husband, a musician, and he devoured it.
Not long enough.......2007-05-08
This book is an interesting look into the swinging London of the 1960's from the viewpoint of an American looking to make a name for himself in the music biz. Like fellow American Shel Talmy Joe Boyd was involved in many of London's top bands by running the UFO club and producing the Pink Floyd's first single, producing and managing Fairport Convention and Nick Drake and capitalizing on the new interest in the British folk music scene. This book starts with Boyd's childhood and his experiences working for the Newport Folk Festival, Elektra records, and his own Witchseason Productions. It is very well written and it makes me wonder why he has not written a definitive book on Nick Drake but that's for another time. If you love reading about music in the 1960's or just music in general this is a great book albeit very short.
Next Decade, Please.......2007-05-08
I hope Joe Boyd decides to continue -- he either kept incredible journals or has an astonishing memory. Either way, this is one of the best accounts of the era I've read. To have a producer discuss how drugs influenced/changed the music of individuals and bands while he was working with them, the role politics played in his and various partners' efforts, and provide his completely candid assessments (I don't agree with him all the time -- but he sure doesn't mince words) is just great. If you have the LPs, make sure your turntable is in working order. You'll want to relisten to far more than is on the companion CD. Now it's time for the Hannibal years!
Engaging book by Joe Boyd........2007-03-16
White Bicycles, by Joe Boyd, is a "pick up and don't put down all weekend" type book. Boyd has great storytelling style, here telling us about his career and where it took him with various recording artists, his escapades and participation in London in the "60's", and his professional development as a producer. I got the book primarily because I am a Nick Drake fan. The two existing Nick biographies, while diligently researched, and containing info based on many interviews, still have that degree of detachment that necessarily exists when the authors have never personally met their subject.I certainly wasn't disappointed-as Boyd's few chapters on Nick brought this departed artist to life for me more than the two existing bios. He conveys his interactions with the shy artist, and writes about him in a way that lets us see the person as well as the artist. Yes, it is very funny to read as Boyd describes how Nick answered his telephone (as if it had never rung before) and his first meeting with him after the intro by Ashley of Fairport Convention, then moving in to the production of Five Leaves and Bryter Layter, and Nick's decision to take a new direction w/Pink Moon, which Boyd did not produce.
But there are also so many other artists! The book is a fascinating journey through the emerging rock/pop/folk scenes of the 60's early 70's on both sides of the Atlantic, with some gigantic names, and some not so well known on one shore or another. My feeling upon finishing the book was a Question: I wonder what he'll publish next? I want to be there.

Six Sigma Way Team Fieldbook.......2007-03-24
An excellent resource for new Black Belts. Describes the DMAIC phases in plain english. A definite must for anyone training in the DMAIC methodology.
A priceless guide full of hundreds of templates and examples.......2006-11-12
As a Transactional Six Sigma Black Belt, this has been one of the most useful six sigma books I own. It contains a wealth of illustrations and tools that are priceless in terms of teaching process improvement teams basic six sigma methods. Using this book, people in process improvement can learn to apply many of the basic six sigma concepts.
I cannot stress enough, the number of useful illustrations and examples that are in every chapter in this book. Where most six sigma books tell you what six sigma is and how to analyze and measure, this one gives you the communication tools that are essential for getting and keeping an improvement project on-track.
Although many six sigma people would disagree with me on this point, I am a firm believer that Process Improvement & Management is the program to achieve business change success and six sigma is a tool to help accomplish and control the improvements.
A must read and a bargain-priced book. I recommended it to every process improvement team I lead and the feedback is always a "Wow - what a book!"
Looking for Cost Reduction, Increased Productivity, and Loyal Costumers - This is the practical implementation guide .......2006-07-17
Six sigma is a quality system that has helped world class companies save millions and gain costumer. It was brought into fame by the legendary Jack Welch during his years at General Electric.
This book is a practical implementation guide and the companion for "The sis sigma way: How GE, Motorola, and other top companies are honing their performance". Buy this book if you are already involved in a sis sigma initiative in your organization, either as a black belt, green belt, or champion. If you are looking for an introduction to fundamentals an systems implementation, you may do better with "The sis sigma way: How GE, Motorola, and other top companies are honing their performance", which is a comprehensive self-help guide to adapting and using the six sigma system under various conditions. Half of the book focuses on implementation through a detailed and flexible five-step "road map", filled with practical directions.
Either if you are looking to solve an specific process problem, or want to implement six sigma company wide, both books will help you develop a method that fits the specific needs of your company or organization.
Classroom training for Six Sigma costs what!.......2005-11-05
I began my journey to learn about Six Sigma around a year ago. At that time I investigated classroom training on Six Sigma. The cost for Six Sigma training was far too expensive for my management team to seriously consider. My most viable option was to train myself. I bought seven, yes seven, books on the topic of Six Sigma. This book was the best of the seven resources I purchased. This book is an inexpensive resource for training. I would also recommend an introduction to Six Sigma to supplement this book. My recommendation would be, "What is Six Sigma?" (another book by Pande). I have several years of quality experience so not every newcomer can just read a book. For most business process improvement efforts this book can give you the education to be dangerous against company waste and inefficiencies.
Excellent way to start your green belts!.......2005-09-08
This book is a great intro book for new green belts. I am using this in our corporate office for training.

Lennard Zinn is a cycling god. Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance is revered as a bible among the fat-tire set; he now extends the gospel to the rest of the cycling faithful in Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance.
From simple, routine maintenance to more complicated tasks, Zinn remains "convinced that anyone with an opposable thumb can perform any repair on a bike." He begins with "Basic Stuff" such as pre-ride inspections and cleaning the drive train, and continues on through the super-advanced task of wheel building--arguing that "the construction of a good set of bicycle wheels is actually a straightforward task." Zinn guides readers step by step through every possible repair on every possible part, handlebar grips to Maric Mektronic electronic shifting, with plain-speaking text and helpful illustrations. There's even a section on emergency repairs, including unexpected advice such as straightening a bent rim by hitting it against the ground: "You may be surprised how straight you can get a wheel this way."
This comprehensive manual is essential reading for those who love their bike. "All you have to do is follow the instructions and trust yourself." Indeed. --M. Stein
Book Description
Road bikes are surprisingly complex machines, but there's no need to spend excessive amounts on repairs and maintenance. The cost of a copy of Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance should be sufficient in most cases. This well-organized and -illustrated guide, which incorporates the latest in component technology and innovations, shows how to maintain every part of a road bike. This includes chains, derailleurs, shifters, wheels, brakes, cranks, bottom brackets, pedals, saddles, seatposts, handlebars, stems, headsets, forks, and frames all covered in Lennard Zinn's trademark clear and concise prose. Novices and seasoned mechanics alike can benefit from the clear illustrations, exploded views of how components go together, and practical tips on how to completely and properly maintain all aspects of their road bikes to ensure hours of trouble-free riding. Zinn shows exactly when to tackle a maintenance project and when a trip to the bike shop for repair is unavoidable.

Your Bicycle Reference Guide.......2007-04-10
Great diagrams and instructions will help you repair any problems you may encounter with your bike. Any bike owner should own this important reference.
The Bike.......2007-03-09
Great product - just what was needed.
Great Amazon service, as expected
Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance (2nd Edition).......2007-01-10
Bike maintenance is not rocket science; there aren't that many parts to a bicycle. Most problems that occur with a bicycle can be diagnosed and rectified by anyone possessing a little mechanical aptitude. However, Zinn's book fast tracts the resolve to issues for even the most experienced engineer, by providing clear schematic diagrams of assemblies and tips that make the repair or adjustment easier and quicker.
I see this book as a must for those that know little about the assembly units that make a bicycle and as a good occasional reference for the experienced mechanic. Overall, for the money, this is a good book to have in one's library.
A solid investment.......2006-11-19
I was tired of dealing with the poor service at my local bike shop and decided to start doing my own repairs. I bought this book and the Bicycling guide at the same time and this book has rapidly acquired the grease stained fingerprints and bent spine of a useful guide, while the Bicycling guide rests on the shelf.
Zinn's book makes excellent use of diagrams, which I'd much rather have as a reference than photos, and the book is written in a way that made some of the more technical aspects of maintaining and repairing bicycles very accessible to a new repairer like me. It also covers a good scope of road bicycle types and had plenty of information relevant to Cyclo-Cross bikes, which was a big plus to me.
The Best of the Bike Maintenance books.......2006-08-05
"ZINN & the Art of Road Bike Maintenance" 2nd Edition, by Lennard Zinn
Looking over several of the bike maintenance books in the bookstore showed Zinn's book to be the best.
Many of the other books only covered maintenance in Part or a few chapters of the book or only as part of generalized information, whereas Lennard Zinn's book is dedicated to nothing but bike maintenance.
#1
I like the large black & white illustrations for every part of the bike. These schematics don't leave you with a fuzzy view, but an enlarged and very clear view of all the working parts
#2
I like the fact that all of the text is DOUBLE-SPACED throughout the entire book.
#3
One of the more puzzling aspects of maintenance is the array of bike tools needed. Zinn shows terrific black & white drawings of every tool neccessary (and the optional ones) and they are clearly named.
Zinn doesn't waste any time in this book with chapters on bike riding, energy foods, fashionable clothing, or training regimens. Some of the other books did waste space on these things and those are the kind of bike MAINTENANCE books I want to stay away from.
Zinn includes TORQUE TABLES in APPENDIX E, showing how many foot/pounds of Torque are to be applied to various components.
APPENDIX D is a word glossary, which is important.
APPENDIX C / ROAD BIKE FITTING, is how to measure yourself and fit yourself in to the right size of bike.
APPENDIX B is a GEAR CHART
APPENDIX A is a TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE, you know, like"
"strange noises in the GAZINKER...." or "muffler-bearings making noises..." or "What to do when the brake grease is leaking..."
Seriously, it's an excellent Troubleshooting Guide, in spite of my funny examples!
I'm happy to have found Zinn's book.

The basics and more.......2006-07-05
I bought this book to better understand my own bicycle and how to repair it. Not being a professional and being only a sometime rider, and also being one who likes to do his own work, I needed a book that would tell me what I needed to know. This book exceeded my expectations as it also shows the tools I need and how to use them. Very basic material but it doesn't pre-suppose and unlimited knowledge of bicycle mechanics as some articles and magazines do. Well worth the price.
Lacks an index.......2006-06-30
This book is a strong showing for a book that was published by a bike tool company -- a first effort, apparently.
However, it needs an index.
Haynes, which has a bike book along with its auto books, generally has pathetic indexes (very sparse), but at least they sometimes work for the reader.
Let the next edition of the Park book benefit from a strong index!

It's hard to argue with success; it's even tougher to emulate it. But if you want to train like a Tour de France winner, you couldn't do much better than learning the tricks of the trade from two-time champion (1999 and 2000) Lance Armstrong.
In The Lance Armstrong Performance Program: Seven Weeks to the Perfect Ride, Armstrong teams up with his coach, Chris Carmichael (whom the U.S. Olympic Committee named 1999's Coach of the Year), to offer the ultimate insider's guide to becoming a better rider, based on the regimen Carmichael has been fine-tuning for Armstrong since the early 1990s. Noting that athletes of all levels focus best when aiming for specific goals at the end of short windows, the authors describe the performance program as consisting of "three specialized weekly training programs that build on your current fitness level" followed by a week of "recovery riding between each program." They provide an easy-to-administer fitness-level self-test in the form of a three-mile time trial (beginner, intermediate, or advanced), and they then define the key operative terms that make up the bulk of the actual training, including Tempo, HighSpin, PowerIntervals, Sprints, and Training Zone. A brief section of workbook-style pages provides readers with a user-friendly outline for the entire seven weeks.
Here is week 3 for an intermediate rider:
- Monday: day off.
- Tuesday: 1 hour in zone 2 with 20 minutes Tempo on flat terrain.

Though clearly the focus, the performance program itself makes up less than a third of the book. Other subjects covered include cycling equipment, essential maintenance and repair, riding in bad weather, road hazards, mental toughness, and the pros' eating habits both on and off the bike, to name just a few. What the book is not is the story of Lance Armstrong's remarkable recovery from testicular cancer (see his autobiography, It's Not About the Bike, for that). Rather, Armstrong and Carmichael have produced a detail-packed training manual, sprinkled with photographs and tales of the racing life, for those who spend a large percentage of their time on two wheels--or dream of it. --Patrick Jennings

This book fired me up... and should fire you up also..........2007-06-14
In fact, I referenced it in my book. As a serious adventure racer, I wanted to learn what Lance did. As a business coach I wanted to learn what Chris did. I urge you to read this book! excellent information .......2007-05-15
I found this book to be an excellent source of information on biking. I am a recreational cyclist, but found the information in not just centered on professional cycling. I am reading it for the second time.
The Cyclist's Handbook.......2007-04-09
Whether you've been cycling for years, or you're just starting, this book has some great exercise programs that will get you where you want to go.
a good read.......2007-02-07
A valuable resource with lots of useful tips and guidelines for beginners starting out and for the more serious riders looking to step up.
Great Program for the Beginner.......2007-01-30
I purchased this book while re-training for my first season of snowboarding since breaking my leg several months ago. I chose to focus on a cycling program when I realized that the muscles I really needed to develop were the same ones used by devoted cyclists. Therefore I purchased this book in hopes of getting an excellent fitness routine that would get me back on my board ASAP and I haven't been disappointed yet.
This program is perfect for beginners, or anyone who is just trying to get an idea of how to start a good program that can be maintained and adjusted to your fitness level. The book is full of anecdotes on Lance and Chris, much of which are unnecessary, but they make for easy reading. The book reads like a motivational biography with important fitness and cycling details spaced throughout. It's easy to read, but I would stress that this is certainly geared more towards a beginning cyclist who is just looking for an easy-to-follow program. In the process, you learn a lot about Lance, and you may even get to the point where you can identify with him and feel motivated by his experiences.
I highly recommend this book for any beginning cyclist or individual interested in both anaerobic and aerobic endurance training.

Book Description
Power meters are rapidly becoming an invaluable part of training and racing among professional cyclists and triathletes, amateurs looking for a competitive edge, and gear fiends. For coaches and athletes, these devices offer enormous potential for targeting and timing training to realize a rider's goals. Yet few athletes or coaches understand how to interpret the data for optimal results, and few cycling resources do more than mention the possibility of wattage training. Training and Racing with a Power Meter decrypts the layers of information and explains how to begin a program that effectively integrates power. Hunter Allen and Andrew Coggan have conducted extensive research and consulted with manufacturers to deliver the most sophisticated and scientific approach to training on the market, allowing riders to tap every last watt of power. The book includes cogent case studies, sample power workouts, and a chapter on the future of training and racing with these soon-to-be indispensable devices.

The Benefits of a Power Meter.......2007-04-09
Cyclists who train with a power meter must have this manual. It's the first of its kind, and you can learn everything you need to know to get started with this new trend.
great reference.......2007-01-12
this is a great book to understand the details of training for cycling using a powermeter. a necessary reference for the library of an athlete with a powermeter. this is the first of its kind and does a great job directing the reader in methods to analyze power data from rides, get the most of workouts, and monitor training stress. also includes pretty thorough reviews of the various powermeters on the market.
Power Meter Decision maker.......2007-01-11
This book is a must have for those already training with power or cyclists interested in learning what all the hubbub is about.
I bought the book in October 2006 because I had been hearing success stories from folks who trained with power. The book is well laid out and even provides enough information about the top four power meters and the software they come with to make a reasonable decision, however I would recommend joining some of the forums and reading as much as you can before you make your final decision.
Some of the topics were a bit technical, but you don't have to fully understand the most technical aspects of the book to find the information within these pages useful. I wanted to understand as much as possible without having to become a physiology major. With three readings under my belt I feel confident that I can create a reasonable training plan for improving my standing within the weekend group century rides. In addition to the book the authors provide a power meter course that visits major cities. I believe serious cyclists will find this course helpful especially if they read the book first.
My power meter, which this book and the forums helped me choose, arrived this week. I hope to install it over the weekend and take my first fitness test so I can build a power based training plan.
This book is a must have!
Take your training to the next level.......2007-01-10
I am an experienced racer in triathlon and MTB ultra-distance events. This book, coupled with my new power measuring tools and my long-time use of a heart rate monitor, has taken my training to new levels. I am a detail-oriented, technical person, and the book satisfied my need for insights into how and why things are recommended or advocated. I found the advice and techniques to be absolutely useful in helping me improve my knowledge and my performance. I am wasting less time training wrong and getting more back from my sessions in the few months since I began reading this book-- but it will take me years to master the material inside, which tells me that I've got a real reference as opposed to an owner's manual here. If you're going to train with power, don't do it without this book.
Very Useful.......2006-11-10
"Training and Racing with a Power Meter" is a very useful book which helps all those triathletes and coaches that want to move to the next step of cycling training, either in Triathlon or road cycling.
I would strongly recommend this book!!!

Maybe you're a novice who has yet to squeeze into that first pair of sexy Lycra shorts. Or perhaps you're a seasoned racer who is seeking ways to become stronger and faster. Whatever the case, you will be well served by Ed Pavelka's comprehensive guide, which takes the reader on a highly readable ride through road cycling--from the basics of handling and maintenance to the subtle intricacies of racing. Instead of asking the reader to take his word on every subject, Pavelka has gathered a cast of Olympians and renowned mechanics to tackle whichever topic reflects his or her strongest suit. Besides the basics, chapters also include in-depth advice on sprinting, hill climbing, using heart monitors effectively, training indoors during the wintry months, and even surviving your commute in the concrete jungle. If that's not enough, Pavelka has devoted an entire section to medical concerns, including overtraining, sore knees, and saddle sores. --Ben Tiffany

Road Cycling Skills is Great.......2007-01-20
Very good especially for the beginning rider excellentbook I learned ALOT!
bike book.......2006-10-29
this book has good info but nothing you couldnt find on the internet for free.
A good encouragement to cycle more.......2006-08-30
Some have criticized this book as if it has little useful to say. But, I found it quite helpful, and I have been cycling for most of the last forty years.
I bought the book because I wanted to dust off my bicycle again after a dozen sedentary years. The last book on cycling I read was Eugene Sloan's "Complete Book of Bicycling." I would say the subtitle is very descriptive of what this book offers: "Your Guide to Riding Faster, Stronger, Longer, and Safer."
The book is written by people who race bicycles. They explain that many training techniques for racing used wisely will make the touring cyclist a much better rider. I found some of the suggestions about when to drink how much water and caution against overreaching and overtraining to be very helpful, but those were not the only things. I can endorse the encouragement to work for smoothness in pedalling as well as a higher cadence in a lower gear instead of lugging it in a gear that is just a little too high.
Because of extra years and extra pounds it will be a while before I can reap all of the benefits I might from this book.
Literary equivalent to the energy bar.......2005-08-14
This book is broken down into short chapters which can each be read in about three to five minutes. Like Bicycling magazine itself, it manages to be accurate and somewhat helpful, albeit completely insubstantial. I found that reading this book inspired me to ride, which is always a good thing. The subject of road cycling, however, is treated in such a superficial and scattershot manner that the book will probably be of little long term benefit. Like a cliff bar, it's sugary, fast acting, short term fuel for the road.
A good book for the the strait racing bike. .......2004-08-31
This book was written primarily for the strait road/race bicycle, (the one with the curved handlebars). If this is your bike I recommend it, even more so if you intend to race. However, except for a brief topic of converting a mountain bike for the road, there is no mention of hybrids in the book. Maybe the book was made before they were available, hence the info on converting a mountain bike for the road. If you have a road bike with upright handlebars, (hybrid, comfort, touring), you won't find any mention of your bike in the book. And the pictures and info in the chapter on bicycle parts is all geared toward the road/racing bike.
However the book is still worthwhile reading, particularly the chapters on safety, and road skills, dealing with exhaustion, heat, and cold among other helpful topics. I wouldn't recommend it for the advanced cyclist, or those that don't have a dedicated road/race bike, as a first book. But there is still some good stuff here. The black and white drawings of streetwise safety ideas I found particularly helpful.

Book Description
Barnett's Manual has become the industry standard, demystifying every aspect of bicycle repair by emphasizing detail, logic, and measurement. The manual, published in four volumes and printed on perforated, grease-resistant paper, can be used by both bike mechanics and the serious DIY-er. Each chapter is structured logically for maximum use: terminology, reasons for service, prerequisites, tool choices, anticipation of complications, fits and dimensions, service procedures, and troubleshooting. Extensive reference information minimizes the need to cross-reference to other sources when solving a repair problem, and the drawings on nearly every page help explain each procedure. This new, updated edition of the bible of bicycle repair also includes more than 1,000 clear and detailed drawings illustrating each procedure.
Customer Reviews:
wow.......2007-06-15
Very impressive. Unfortunately, I can't give it 5 stars because of the price, and the fact that it's a bit dated. Something like this should be on a subscription system, as new parts/procedures come out, pay a small fee and get the new/updated content.
Just what the cyclist ordered.......2007-01-10
Having recently started seriously doing my own work on my bicycle I find these books excellent. I already have the Haynes Bicycle manual which was a useful book to start with but I was looking for one that explained more than just how to make basic adjustments or simple component installations. I particularly like the detailed explanation in each chapter of how the various components on a bike work and the consequences of correct/incorrect adjustment or installation. The range of component types/brands covered in the books is also impressive. The books lean towards the text side of things (hence the 4 volumes) with many well drawn and clear diagrams which may not suit some people.
Detailed Maintenance Manual.......2006-11-04
This set of manuals provides detailed instructions for how to perform maintenance on your bike. I used this manual for instructions on how to build wheels and successfully built my first wheelset. The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow. If that is what you are looking for, you will not be disappointed.
This is not the newest edition.............2006-05-25
Be careful with this purchase, because, although the price
is good for the 4 volumes, it's the 5th edition, and not
the newest 6th edition!
I think the description of the item doesn't make this
clear at all, and some folks may be disappointed.
EXPENSIVE ??- THINK AGAIN !!.......2005-11-03
This is the BICYCLE REPAIR/MAINTENCE BIBLE!!!
Expensive? Think again!
With the average mid price bicycle hovering around $800.00, and the better road bikes at $1,500.00 (and up)this book (AND THE PROPER TOOLS) will pay for themselves.
Why fool around with other so called "bicycle repair" books which cover little more than chain cleaning/cable adjustments??
The vast amount of small bike shops closing their doors & the remaining "Bicycle Superstores", who employ a new "mechanic" each week-Barnett's Manual will save your hair & scratches on your frame!
Barnett's Manual will guide you through basic tune up proceedures/adjustments to keep your bike in top shape.
YOU ARE NOT A "HANDS-ON" TYPE" PERSON??
You STILL need this manual! The knowlage gained from Barnett's Manual will keen your eye to the "Mechanic" while he is repairing your bike!!
ONE SIZE FITS ALL-IN DEPTH!!!
ANY NOVICE can gain a thorough mechanical understanding of bicycle components, repairs, tune-up, & adjustments.
ADVANCED!
Simple tasks like the "correct" proceedure to mount a tire/tube right up to bottom bracket/headshell facing & complete suspension fork rebuilds are covered!
HOWEVER! With the hundreds of makes, models, mid-year changes in spec'd equipment-not to mention modern bicycle technology which changes faster than dish TV programing, DON'T EXPECT EVERY MAKE, MODEL, YEAR of every bike/component to be covered.
Providing you have the bicycle specific tools required, Barnett's Manual will complete your toolbox.
PLEASE!
Buy it from Amazon-Nice people! Nice Prices!

Book Description
This is the delightful and often humorous story of an around-the-world bicycle trip taken by two young people, Barbara and Larry Savage.
It took them two years and 25 countries. Along the way, these neophyte cyclists encountered warm-hearted strangers, bicycle-hating drivers, rock-throwing Egyptians, over-protective Thai policemen, and great personal joys.
They returned to a new life in Santa Barbara, one Barbara never lived to savor. She was killed in a street accident, Barbara and her bicycle vs. a truck. We are lucky to have this memoir, throughout which her vitality, warmth and compassion glow.
Slightly edited for radio presentation.

Inspiring.......2007-05-29
This book was a treat to read. They were so courageous to do what they did and it was so fun to live vicariously through their experiences. I highly recommend reading it. I checked it out from the library, but I am going to buy a copy now to keep in my stash at home to read again in the future and to lend to friends.
Knowing about the tragic ending to Barbara's life gave parts of the book an ominous feeling, like when they mentioned the possiblity of biking through Latin America one day. And I can't help but wonder what Larry is up to now, like if he did any more lengthy bicycle tours. Just curious.
I read it again for the 3rd time.......2007-01-10
I have just completed my 3rd reading, spread over 7 years, of Miles from Nowhere. I laughed as loudly as I did the first time and still found it hard to put it down. The book is my special reminder of how to live your life and chase your dreams. I feel ashamed that I have not yet started on my world bike tour but this summer (2007) looks like it will be the year. I often feel indebted to Barbara and Larry for their book and for their willingness to share such a wonderful experience. The book is a must read for anyone with a sense of adventure and a sense of humor.
An easy, captivating read - .......2006-02-16
I've never done one of these online reviews before, but this book should get more attention. I wish I always had a book on hand like this, that I was so actively interested in. I would give family a running update on what Larry and Barb were doing at a given point in the book.
As for a previous review citing lack of proper planning and cultural insensitivity, there is something to be said for underplanned or spontaneous adventures. And sometimes those who make the most mistakes can become the best of teachers. I for one don't require that the authors have something profound, illuminating, and highly sensitive to say about each culture they encounter. I'm quite happy that Larry and Barb were normal people who had some great adventures, persevered where many might not, and happened to write well enough to let me share some of it.
I definitely recommend this book.
I wanted to meet her; I considered Barbara my new best friend.......2006-02-01
Wow, even though this book was written some time ago, I felt a connection to Barbara Savage. She was open about life, and funny too. From the moment I started reading about her adventures I couldn't put the book down. I wish that I had never read the outside back cover of the book, however.
The center of being.......2005-04-13
It has been over 20 years since we read this book. _I_ read it in preparation for a 4 month trip through and across western Europe. _She_ read it because I recommended it.
This story is so inspiring, it can change your outlook on life -- forever. The Savage's trials and tribulations, their open-mindedness in dealing with situations far beyond our immediate experiences -- ... this trip opened our minds and hearts to the planet Earth, and all her wonders.
After all these years, this wonderful travelogue still pops up up in our conversations about our lives --- to the extent that we decided to write this review: If you *want* to have an open mind, if you want to *experience* life on this Earth, to understand how *your* understanding differs from that of your brother/sister - read this book. Get a bike. Go for a tour. You will never be the same, again.
