Customer Reviews:
Love it!.......2007-05-10
I bought this book for my son a few weeks ago, and all my kids love it just as much as it's 3 predecessors. I admit, I'm the real fanatic in the family when it comes to the Bear Snores On series...I love the rhythm of the text and when the kids join in with the catch phrase that each book has "and the bear snores on", "the bear wants more", or, in this case "who?"...even though, they all know who the new friend is. Fabulous addition to your collection.
love these books........2007-03-31
This one is not my favorite. We love "Bear Snores on" and "Bear wants more". I like the rhyming and stories better than this one, but this one is cute too. we also like the Christmas one- "Bear Wakes Up". My (almost) 3 and 5 yr olds love all of these and we read them all the time. the illustrations are great. we learn about all the different animals. they love to "aaaachooo" in Bear snores on.
No TV, Just Bear Books.......2007-02-07
Our girls would rather read the Bear books than watch TV! It's the best compliment a books series can receive isn't it?
Another great bear book.......2007-01-10
This is our fourth Bear book by Karma Wilson. My four year old daughter and I love the rhythms in these books. They are fun to read and easy to read along with. Great illustrations too.
Another cute book...........2006-12-29
We have the entire series of Bear books, and I have to admit, while this latest is cute, has the same wonderful illustrations, and my kids love it, the rhyme is not quite up to par when compared to the previous versions. However, it is still a really good book -and my children enjoy reading it - which, in my "book," is what actually matters the most. I will recommend this latest edition as much as the previous ones.

Learning resources, including a glossary, a bibliography for kids, lists of rainforest exhibits and environmental organizations, and favorite rainforest web sites
Dozens and dozens of activities that are challenging and fun
Customer Reviews:
Great teaching tool!.......2007-05-30
I used this with my third graders in teaching a thematic unit on the rainforest. It is full of maps, activities, information, experiments, a board game, etc. It was an excellent resource that covered all parts of the rainforest. Following some of the articles is a little quiz on the reading---that was an added bonus because there was a ready-made quiz for my kids that I didn't even have to make! This book provided some great information for myself and my students. I would highly recommend it not only as a resource for a classroom teacher, but for any child who is interested in the rainforest. Outstanding!

Book Description
It looks like a bear, but isn’t one. It climbs trees as easily as a monkey— but isn’t a monkey, either. It has a belly pocket like a kangaroo, but what’s a kangaroo doing up a tree? Meet the amazing Matschie’s tree kangaroo, who makes its home in the ancient trees of Papua New Guinea’s cloud forest. And meet the amazing scientists who track these elusive animals.
Customer Reviews:
Quest for the Tree Kangaroo--Its not just for kids!.......2007-06-15
I received this book from a thoughtful, loving, and dear kindred spirit of a friend and while it is being marketed as a children's book, I found that it was just as wonderful as an animal lover's or even a conservationists' (organic-free trade-decaffeinated) coffee table book. Nic Bishop's up close and personal photography is beyond any Life Magazine or National Geo quality color photos. Sy Montgomery's writing takes the reader along on the expedition with all the science, language and even a bit of humor provided in part by the guides. Montgomery has created a fun book for kids and adults alike! A great gift for high school graduates to inspire them to follow their dreams and passions. For kid's, this would make a cake science report book!
beautiful book, fascinating creature!.......2007-04-13
the photos are great, i just wish there were more. i am not very interested in the human beings that performed the research, and wish there was more about the animals...

Dan Beard; Field and Forest Handy Book.......2007-01-21
Excellent book for any outdoor explorer. Interesting for adults, too. Now our sons want his other books!
Perfect for a young man.......2007-01-05
My son read the covers off the first D. C. Beard book we got (The American Boys Handy Book) and I can tell this will swiftly suffer the same fate. Detailed instructions for dozens of projects... he can't put it down.
great fun!.......2006-03-19
Originally written 100 years ago, this delightful book shows you how to enjoy the Great Outdoors. Divided seasonally, the author shows you, via illustrations and diagrams, how to make kites, bird houses, aquariams, boats, sleds, moccasins, shirts, and various camping utensils. For the more adventurous, he shows you how to construct bridges, dams, piers and outdoor dwellings of different kinds. He also provides tips for camping out in your own backyard.
Dan Beard was one of the founders of the American Boy Scouts and an irresistibly cheerful, "can-do" attitide makes this book fun for the serious and armchair outdoorsperson alike.
Handbook for raising Tom Sawyer.......2001-06-20
I hardly know where to begin. Like the Boys' and Girls' Handybooks, this hefty little book is full of ideas from a bygone era. Written in 1906, the activities are not always the kind of things our kids can do today...but this is a book of IDEAS! While you might not want to camp in a swamp, this book will tell you how. That information might come in useful for another project someday. The book also has historical value--the vocabulary is sometimes quite dated--but that's part of the fun!
Other ideas from the book, which is organized by season: Kites, herbarium, quail farming, bird houses, cages, aquaria, carts, rafts, boats, camping, indoor ideas, outdoor cooking, sleds, packs, and so much more. Oh, and DO learn how to cook a muskrat!

Chester Raccoon doesn't want to go to school--he wants to stay home with his mother. She assures him that he'll love school--with its promise of new friends, new toys, and new books. Even better, she has a special secret that's been in the family for years--the Kissing Hand. This secret, she tells him, will make school seem as cozy as home. She takes her son's hand, spreads his tiny fingers into a fan and kisses his palm--smack dab in the middle: "Chester felt his mother's kiss rush from his hand, up his arm, and into his heart." Whenever he feels lonely at school, all he has to do is press his hand to his cheek to feel the warmth of his mother's kiss. Chester is so pleased with his Kissing Hand that he--in a genuinely touching moment--gives his mom a Kissing Hand, too, to comfort her when he is away. Audrey Penn's The Kissing Hand, published by the Child Welfare League of America, is just the right book for any child taking that fledgling plunge into preschool--or for any youngster who is temporarily separated from home or loved ones. The rough but endearing raccoon illustrations are as satisfying and soothing for anxious children as the simple story. (Ages 5 and older) --Karin Snelson
Book Description
In this contemporary classic Chester Raccoon seeks love and reassurance from his mother as he ventures out into the world to attend his very first day of school.
Customer Reviews:
Sweetest first day of school story.......2007-06-28
I was interning at a preschool center and myself and several other students were looking for books to read during story time. I read this story and cried my eyes out. Its an adorable story about a mother comforting her child before his first day of school. Maybe I'm a big baby, but i loved this story.
A sweet tale for any child........2007-05-30
This book was purchased as a holiday gift for our grandchildren. I got to read it aloud and illustrate the title just recently. It is a reminder for children that the love you have for them is as close as their hand and the people they love are never REALLY far away.
The Great Goodbye Book.......2007-05-15
I teach preschool and have read this book to my class for years. It seems to calm children's hearts as well as Mommy's hearts. At the end of the story the parents give their children a kiss as do the children kiss their parents. It is a perfect transistion into class time.
Wonderful mother and son story about letting go with love........2007-03-16
This is one of my favorite children's books, and even though my son is older now, I still think of it with much affection. Great baby gift!
A must for toddlers.......2007-03-08
This book is a must read for any child who will leave their family home for an extended time, whether it be daycare, pre-school or Kindergarten. I purchased this book long ago for my granddaughter who lives in another state, and whenever we parted we would leave each other with a kiss, and when I would talk with her on the phone she would hold her hand to the phone and I would leave her with a kiss. A great gift for grandchildren.

There are enemies within and without...
The coven took my mother, because of me. They killed my dog, because of me. You'd think there could be nothing worse than this -- but you'd be wrong. My family and me being torn to shreds by a horde of witches could be worse. War could be worse. And all-out war is coming.
My father says my powers are limitless. I have yet to see it ... and no time to learn. We are closing in on one another, the coven and my father and me. It can only end in death, theirs or ours.
It's all in my hands now.
Customer Reviews:
Slow but unique.......2003-08-04
The trilogy got off to a slow start with Witch Boy in which Marcus, a newbie at sorcery, goes through a pubescent-like confusion at the changes he is experiencing, only to discover his father is an evil witch whom he must confront. Somehow I missed volume two, Dark Prince, and feel as out of the loop as I did with the first book in the series, where the reader feels just as clueless as poor Marcus as he tries to figure out what happened to his beloved girlfriend Jules. In Blood War, the coven has gone too far, taking not only Marcus's girlfriend and his dog, but his mother. On the quest to rescue her, Marcus does indeed meet his father, who inspires him to make careful choices about his own life.
Darker than Harry Potter, realistic teen language and bloody violence abound. No need to worry about keeping this one out of the hands of middle schoolers, most will not be willing to trudge through the slow paced story or decipher the mythology and symbolism in spite of the attractive cover art. At the conclusion Marcus cannot regain what he has lost, so the plot suggests that at best first love is painful and at worst, sex kills.
May have some appeal for goth teens. If you buy one, get them all for continuity while reminding yourself that one has to admire Chris Lynch for trying something new, even if it isn't stellar.

One Day in the Woods Book Review.......2001-05-04
One Day in the Woods and One Day in the Tropical Rain Forest are both books by Jean Craighead George. They are both about kids who are looking for something . They both take place out in the wilderness. If you need some interesting facts about animals, this is the book for you. One Day in the Tropical Rain Forest is about a boy and a doctor looking for an unnamed butterfly so they can save the rain forest from 11 bulldozers and 4 trucks, will they do it in time? One Day in the Woods is about a girl trying to find a wizard in the Teatown Woods. Will she do it? I hope you enjoy these two books.
Come spend ONE DAY IN THE WOODS.......2001-04-19
Jean Craighead George, author of nearly one hundred novels, picture books, novellas, guides, and stories about nature, presents a story of the perfect length about our most familiar ecosystem, the woods. Ms. George does a terrific job of placing readers in the feet of her main character, a young girl named Rebecca (Ms. George's granddaughter and perhaps the same Rebecca from her picture book DEAR REBECCA, WINTER IS HERE). One beautiful spring morning, Rebecca takes a trip out to the woods near her home to search for a rare and remarkable bird, the ovenbird, which her uncle tells her is a real natural wizard. While Rebecca searches for this wonder of the woods, she finds lots of other incredible creatures--owls, flying squirrels, deer, ducks, and a skunk--and even runs into danger and excitement. Fine descriptions, fondly and accurately written, make birds a lot of us see every day--towhees, robins, and cardinals--all the more special and important, as Ms. George's admiration for even the smallest things in nature is evident. And when Rebecca finds the ovenbird wizard, it really is an eye-opener. The illustrations are woodsy and a nice companion to Ms. George's words. This is a great story for anyone who loves nature and the special words of the author of JULIE OF THE WOLVES and MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN.

Stella has as much moxie as Eloise and as much confidence (and red hair) as Pippi, but her spirit of adventure, overactive imagination, and older-sister omniscience catapult her into a league of her own. We met the inquisitive, impulsive Stella and her less reckless little brother, Sam, in Stella, Star of the Sea and in Stella, Queen of the Snow, but are newly delighted with Stella, Sam, and their faithful dog's thoroughly charming foray into the forest.
Stella has seen hundreds of fairies. Sam think he sees one, too, tiny and beautiful, but it is only a butterfly, Stella tells him. "'Do butterflies eat butter?'" asked Sam. 'Yellow butterflies do,' said Stella." As much as Stella seems to know, however, Sam knows a few things, too. That blue butterflies must eat pieces of blue sky, for instance. And that despite her insistence to the contrary, the "rock" in the stream was moving.
Marie-Louise Gay's friendly, engaging watercolors crawl with tiny snails and other woodland creatures that readers might miss the first time through. Stella, Fairy of the Forest will warm the hearts of children and adults alike, especially those who believe that a walk in the woods is an at least potentially magical adventure. (Ages 3 to 8) --Karin Snelson
Book Description
In their third adventure, Stella and her little brother cross a field and a creek before spending the day in the forest. Butterflies, snakes, rocks, and sheep provide fuel for Sam's curious-little-brother questions and Stella's big-sister answers as they explore the outdoor world. Gay's watercolors bring the forest alive as the two journey toward their very own fort where Sam resolves to stay forever. Marie-Louise Gay is a multiple-time winner of Canada's Governor General's Literary Award, Canada's Mr. Christie's Book Award, and others. Gay's illustrations, done primarily in watercolors with a touch of paper collage, are bright and have a whimsical touch. School Library Journal

Cute.......2004-03-05
Stella and her little brother Sam go to play in the forest. Sam has a lot of fears, but Stella, who is a know-it-all, dismisses them by reassuring Sam that bears sleep during the day, and snakes are too small to swallow people. The story is cute, but not always accurate. It has about 600 words.
Loved the first one, but this one doesn't hold a candle........2003-01-28
I loved Stella Star of the Sea. The illustrations with that flaming red hair and subtly comic dog, Sam's conservative and inquisitive nature. Stella Queen of the Snow was okay, but didn't have the same uniqueness. The dialogue seemed a bit forced and not as charming as the first. I am sadly disappointed with Stella Fairy of the Forest. It doesn't have any of the wonderful qualities of the Star of the Sea.
Let's Find Fairies.............2002-06-24
Stella's back, with her self-assured manner and flaming red hair, and she's ready to take her little brother, Sam, on a forest adventure in search of fairies. And as they walk through the meadow filled with wild flowers and sheep, and cross the stream on stepping stones, Sam is filled with questions and thoughtful comments about the world around them, and as always Stella has all the answers. "Do butterflies eat butter?" asked Sam. "Yellow butterflies do," said Stella. "Then I guess blue butterflies eat pieces of sky," said Sam. And so it goes as they enter the forest filled with "big old trees." "Are they older than Grandma?" asked Sam. "Almost," said Stella. "They must be at least a hundred years old." "Is that why their skin is so wrinkled?" asked Sam. "That's not skin," said Stella. "That's bark." "Grandma's bark is much softer," said Sam. "Especially on her cheeks." The adventure continues as they watch and discuss forest animals, snakes, and the origin and growth of rocks, build a forest house out of ferns and branches, and watch for fairies..... No one captures the essence of small children, out for a day of imaginative fun and adventure quite like Marie-Louise Gay. Her gentle text is entertaining and engaging, and her ear for sibling dialogue and chatter is unrivaled. It's easy to believe that you're tagging along with Stella and Sam, and listening in on their conversations. Ms Gay's bright and expressive illustrations are captivating, and filled with joy, whimsy, and marvelous detail. Together word and art offer a feast for both the ears and eyes. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, Stella Fairy Of The Forest is a wonderful new addition to Ms Gay's Stella series. Read them all and enjoy!
You and your preschooler will love this book!.......2002-04-07
Marie-Louis Gay's books about Sam and Stella are marvelous. This, their third adventure, begins when Sam asks Stella about fairies. Stella knows just where to find some. She leads Sam through meadows, across a stream and into a magical forest.
This story is truly lovely especially in its treatment of the siblings' relationship. Ms. Gay's illustrations have a special quality particularly her depictions of the delightful red-head, Stella. Don't miss it!

Book Description
The spirit is willing...
Strange but true: I can move things with my mind. Even stranger, but just as true: Lately, I've been looking in the mirror and seeing a face I don't recognize. I've been knocking down trees and throwing boulders without touching them. And I've done some seriously heinous something to my girlfriend in this kind of ... I don't know ... freak out. I don't know what it was. I don't know if she's dead or alive.
You think I'm scared that I'm melted in the head? You don't know the half of it. Melted in the bead would be a blessing, compared to this. I'm not afraid of being crazy. I'm afraid of being whatever I am.
What am I?

Not what I expected, and not what I wanted to find.......2005-02-10
The summary of this book sounded ok, the cover art was amazing. My brother had read it and said it was strange. Not trusting his judgement on literature I picked it up and began to read it. Unfortunately I can give you only two words to describe this book, strange, and boring.
The way it is written is odd, but I could get over that. The storyline was far too drawn out and jumbled.
If after you read this review you still want to try it out I suggest you borrow it from a library, you may find it's not worth your money.
Wtich series with male protagonist.......2003-08-04
Marcus is terrified by his strange power to move things with his mind. Just before he and his mom are going to move to a new town, he gives in to his longtime girlfriends plea to make love ý and becomes certain he has done something terrible to her when she disappears in a blaze of light, and he comes to gripping a handful of her hair in his fist. Is she dead or alive? Who or what kind of monster is he? And why do all of the people in his new town seem so familiar to him?
The first book in a trilogy, Witch Boy gets off to a slow start. It takes way too long for the reader to figure out what is going on here ý we are as much in the dark as poor Marcus for most of the book, and a good deal of the plot is internal struggle. Still, it is a nice change to find a boy character who is a witch; given the popularity of series such as Cate Tiernanýs Sweep (Puffin, 2001-) and Lynne Ewingýs Daughters of Moon (Hyperion, 2000-) and of course J.K. Rowlingýs Harry Potter, (Scholastic, 1999) teens seem eager to read about magic and the craft. Both the cover and the premise are appealing, and the cliffhanger ending induces the reader for wait for the second book, if only to discover once and for all if Russell will follow his destiny or not.

This book was fascinating and adventurous and had you hooked from the first page. It was a great fantacy book. It had many twists and after you were finished with the book, you wanted to go and get the next book.
First Book in the Witch Boy Trilogy.......2003-03-06
For the past six months, 17-year-old Marcus Aurelius has been changing, not just physically, but mentally--as in gaining telekinetic powers. As if that weren't frightening enough, Marcus believes he may have killed his girlfriend, Jules, in a bizarre fit in the woods.
Leaving this mystery unanswered for the moment (hopefully it'll be resolved in one of the following two books: "Dark Prince" and "Blood War"), he, his mother, and his "familiar" (Chuck, a bluetick hound) move to Blackwater, where he meets a coven of Celtic witches who know more about him than he knows about himself. But what's even eerier--and what could possibly send him over the edge--is that one of his female classmates looks exactly like Jules.
While told in the first person, which you would think would make the story more revealing, I found "Witch Boy" rather confusing, mainly because of Moon's surreal, complicated writing style. While it's a nice change of pace from most teen fiction (the profanity was definitely unexpected), I think this book/trilogy is better suited for more advanced teen readers (or even adults) who are into fantasy and Celtic mythology. The cliffhanger at the end of "Witch Boy" will certainly make fans want to read the next two books.
