Book Description
Benoit Mandelbrot discovered what is now called the M-Set in the early seventies and coined the term `fractal' to describe the geometry behind it. The power and the beauty of fractals were only capable of being seen with the advent of computers, which become psychedelic windows on the infinite when using simple fractal equations.
In 1992 Nigel Lesmoir-Gordon made the TV documentary, The Colors of Infinity about the Mandelbrot Set and fractals, which has since been seen right round the world. Nigel's enthusiasm brought together a dream team of contributors for the film who all now contribute to the book tracking how fractals have developed since the film was made. Sir Arthur C Clarke presented the film and in the book gives a lucidly simple account of the mathematics of the M-Set. Benoit Mandelbrot, the Belgian mathematician explains how it began. Professor Michael Barnsley, the computer graphics researcher who developed fractal image compression technology, explains the applications of the breakthroughs. Professor Ian Stewart, author of Does God Play Dice? adds his insights into the beautifully simple equation that gives birth to fractals.
Two of the most interesting applications of fractal geometry, reflected by the two new contributors to the book, are to the Internet and to the Stock Market. Dr Gary Flake, Chief Technology Officer at Overture, the leading provider of commercial search on the Internet and just taken over by Yahoo for 1.6 billion dollars, discusses the profoundly fractal nature of the Web in his article: The Self-ish Web. Robert Prechter Jr is President of Elliott Wave International, Inc. and founder of the Socionomics Institute. His latest title is Socionomics: The Science of History and Social Prediction (2003). He writes about how fractals can help us understand the oscillations of stock markets.
In the back of the book is a DVD of the original documentary with soundtrack by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd PLUS a 30-minute fractal animation to the music of members of Quintessence.

The Colours of Enlightenment.......2007-03-09
Depending upon one's education, it is possible to gain either an art appreciation of the fractal geometry of the Mandelbott Set or a realization of how all life is ordered and the universe structured. Life most certainly would exist somewhere out there and it would resemble what we have here on Earth. While viewing it, I felt that this was at least fifty percent of the riddle of the universe explained in at least its basis. The other fifty percent would be what Stephen Hawkin called the other formulae that will reverse this one. He hopes we will find this one before it begins to act in its turn. That would mark the collapse of the universe and he seems to think that we might prevent that. But the collapse may be inevitable and part of the eternal operation of two formulae.
The Mystery remains; was this ordered and if so, by whom or what? We may never know, but for this devastating mystery, we have David Gilmour's compelling score to propel us along through an eternal race toward infinity.
My only complaint is that the film needs re-mastering so that the fractal geometry can be expressed better. Ironic that the documentary that defines the detail of the universe is so fuzzy! Also, there is a second section of fractal art expression on the DVD that will only play on a computer. That ought to be fixed. I think it is fitting that Arthur C. Clarke is the narrator for this film, so I hope this original can be cleaned up and not trashed for an updated version with all new presentation and cast.
This documentary should be shown in all high-school science classes. In fact, I think it ought to be shown to everyone regardless of partticipation in science curriculum because it also assists the refinement of questions like evolution and religion.
Amazing Fractals.......2007-01-12
What an illuminating, thought provoking book and dvd! I have watched it several times and each time it has opened my eyes more to the amazing possibilities in almost every aspect of our existance here on earth. And then who doesn't like David Gilmour's music ?
A great way to discover the colours of infinity.......2007-01-05
Just a perfect combination of top-level science outreach with the
fantastic music of David Gilmour.
It's a journey into the wonders of the fractal geometry explained in
a clear and easy-to-follow way.
Buy it now !!! You won't regret !!!
Fractal Visions.......2006-12-04
Fractals were just hitting the popular consciousness when I was in high school. I remember a flurry of pop science books that came out around that time, all of which presented the wonderful fractal images, while nevertheless dancing quite vaguely around the underlying ideas. The questions these mushheaded books immediately provoked in me (i.e. "what does 'self-similar' actually MEAN?" and "is complexity an objective quality or in the eye of the beholder?) were left totally unanswered. In my high school, these books (and the fractal posters, key-chains, videos, water-pipes...) commanded the attention of an intellectually philistine (and usually highly-intoxicated) crowd. People who use "party" as a verb. This "whoa dude-it's a fractal" factor was so powerful that it left the whole topic kind of disreputable in my book...until now.
This, too, is a "pop" science book, after a fashion, but unlike those other fractal books, the authors here refuse to dumb the subject down to a mere collection of pretty pictures. There is enough detail here to permit a diligent reader to truly understand the logic behind fractal geometry. If you can grasp the math, the basics are here. If, like me, you are a "liberal arts" type, the concepts are also explained in precise English.
The content of the video is similarly excellent. The interviews with Benoit Mandelbrot and Stephen Hawking are very cool indeed, but my favorite part is when Arthur C. Clarke states that, while he doesn't know about this PERSONALLY, "the ingestion of certain illegal substances produces fractal visions." Clad in his trademark blue utility shirt, and with a perfectly straight face, Clarke goes on to note the similarity between the words "Mandelbrot" and "Mandala." (Whoa, dude!)
Unfortunately, the video itself (i.e. formally, visually) is pretty dated. It seems to have been made for VHS, and has not been cleaned up for the DVD release at all. The colors are bled, and the titles look like they were made on a Commodore 64. The fractal images are quite low-resolution, which is unfortunate, since fractals are one topic for which high resolution would seem particularly essential. (Then again, NO level of resolution would really be sufficient.) This video is just begging to be remastered. With contemporary high-def video and computer technology it would be absolutely jaw-dropping. Still, this is totally worth it.
The Colours of Infinity: The Beauty, The Power and the Sense of Fractals.......2006-11-10
This combination book and DVD is excellent and comes at a very reasonable price. The illustrations in the book are beautiful and the DVD is a magnificent pictoral display of fractals as well as excellent descriptions of the history of fractals and the people who discovered them and developed them. Clarke narrates the DVD which I have watched several times and am never bored. The book compliments the DVD and visa versa. I can't imagine a more complete and picturesque presentation. I am a beginner in learning about fractals and this was a perfect purchase for me.

Book Description
Albertus Seba's Cabinet of Natural Curiosities is one of the 18th century's greatest natural history achievements and remains one of the most prized natural history books of all time.Though it was common for men of his profession to collect natural specimens for research purposes, Amsterdambased pharmacist Albertus Seba (1665-1736) had a passion that led him far beyond the call of duty. His amazing, unprecedented collection of animals, plants and insects from all around the world gained international fame during his lifetime. In 1731, after decades of collecting, Seba commissioned illustrations of each and every specimen and arranged the publication of a four-volume catalog detailing his entire collectionfrom strange and exotic plants to snakes, frogs, crocodiles, shellfish, corals, insects, butterflies and more, as well as fantastic beasts, such as a hydra and a dragon. Seba's scenic illustrations, often mixing plants and animals in a single plate, were unusual even for the time. Many of the stranger and more peculiar creatures from Seba's collection, some of which are now extinct, were as curious to those in Seba's day as they are to us now.
This reproduction is taken from a rare, hand-colored original. The introduction offers background information about the fascinating tradition of the cabinet of curiosities to which Seba's curiosities belonged.

quality artwork from a time gone by.......2006-11-11
The old prints are just beautiful. Before photographs, books like these had hand painted reproductions of the animals. The detail is amazing. One can only imagine how long it must have taken to prepare these works. And collect the specimens.Check out the 7 headed hydra! And cheers to Taschen for another beautiful art book.
Science and Art.......2006-11-06
As a biologist, this book is for me the the marriage between science and art. A great collection of specimens drawn into a catalog from so long ago, it's a beautiful thing that it was saved and published. Just be warned, this book is BIG.
Beautiful Edition of Cabinet of Natural Curiosities.......2006-08-09
Beautiful book...I'd been waiting for a more palatable ($) edition of this book for quite awhile and was happily surprised at the quality.

Book Description
This best-selling atlas contains over 900 images and illustrations to help you learn and review the microstructure of human tissues. The book starts with a section on general cell structure and replication. Basic tissue types are covered in the following section, and the third section presents the microstructures of each of the major body systems. The highest -quality color light micrographs and electron micrograph images are accompanied by concise text and captions which explain the appearance, function, and clinical significance of each image. The accompanying website lets you view all the images from the atlas with a "virtual microscope", allowing you to view the image at a variety of pre-set magnifications.
Customer Reviews:
Wheater's Histology.......2007-01-21
Basic histology isn't the most thrilling of topics, but this book makes it a little less painful. Excellent quality images and easy-to-digest commentary make this text a good supplement to any histology or physiology course.
excellent atlas.......2006-11-10
If you're taking a histo course, this is a fabulous atlas. Everyone at my school buys it, it has clearly labelled photographs of slides as well as very neat diagrams explaining how certain things work. Includes electron micrographs of cells for which EM's are helpful. Very very good book, I highly recommend it, it helps alot.
A text and an atlas...good at neither.......2003-10-24
This text tries to be both a text and an atlas in one and is unfortunately good at neither one. The text is very very basic and lacking in detail. The sections are poorly stained, out of focus and do not clearly demonstrate the structures. The pictures are small and of poor quality. Considering the price, I would recommend spending the extra 30-40 bucks and buy Gartner and Hiatt for an atlas and Junquera for a text instead of paying for this text.
!!!!.......2003-09-29
This book is good but not for beginers or medical students. it's complicated and packed with information, that might not be so important for students.
doesn't have any clinical correlations. i'd suggest the Basic histology book:text and atlas, rather than this one
Very useful for my histology class.......2003-06-12
I am a medical student and found this textbook very helpful because it was well-organized and full of important information. It's very thorough and complete with great pictures. Also, this book will always serve as a great reference in years to come. My study group and I also used the following which is also on amazon:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi (isbn: 0971999686) The questions in the second book were of similar type to the tests in our medical histology class. In fact, we were recommended the second book from our friends at another med school and they found it quite helpful. It goes to show they were right, we all got A's and B's by using these two books.

Book Description
A shy and lonely seventeen-year-old, Horatio Hornblower embarks on a memorable career in Nelson's navy as a midshipman on board H.M.S. Justinian. In action adventure and battle he is forged into one of the most formidable junior officers in the service.
Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Friendship .......2006-09-09
This is the next Hornblower chronologically, it was not the next one written. Now that the series is completed it makes sense to read it as Hornblower's career progresses in the Royal Navy.
The whole series is a pleasure to read full of action and adventure; with enough time for a little romance.
Get acquainted with one of the most popular characters in modern literature.
After reading this you will be back for more. And that is a wonderful thing.
Hornblower is beached........2005-12-05
The Hornblower books are a great Napoleonic War era British Navy series. I definitely recommend the series if you like this genre.
This Hornblower is so far the one I've liked the least. It's not too eventful until the end. I think it was meant to show Hornblower in new situations (not just another battle, he spends most of the book hiding in France) to highlight additional facets of his personality. Kudos for trying to develop the character better but I can't say I learned much new about him. Still, worth reading if you like the series.
I have given this book a 4 but it was close to a 3. For me, a 5 is a book that 1) I would recommend to others regardless of whether they read the genre and 2) will most likely reread again in the near future. A 4 is one that 1) I'd recommend if they like the genre and 2) may read again. A 3 I liked but probably would never reread, a 2 was just ok, and a 1 was a waste of time.
Heartwrenching and warming.......2004-12-07
This is generally high up on most HH fans' favorites list. And there's no wonder why. For the first time, our heroic Hornblower has failed and lost his ship---which back then, was worse than death for the captain---it's a personal book with Hornblower worrying about his actions and the consequences to them. In addition, the care and attention he shows to Bush is heartwarming, his concern for his future and promise, "I'll make you a captain if it's the last thing I do." This book really put into perspective the fact that while Hornblower may not view Bush as the smartest of men, he IS his best friend. The affair with Marie also can pull a few internal strings, the devotion Marie has for this man and her haunting, "You're a man women can fall in love with." (attempting to get the quote right.)
A must-read. The pivot of the series.
dull episode in series.......2004-09-01
The premise of the book leaves Hornblower without a ship and defeat in the hands of French forces. He is to be sent to French for trial and execution. This book wasn't as entertaining as previous books in the series. The misery is still a recurring theme in Forester's books and the author also toys with Hornblower's torn feelings between two women in England as well as another he runs into in France. Hornblower worries about Bush, his court martial, his wife, Lady Barbara, his unborn child which served as the tension in the story. This really didn't serve the book in making it exciting yet in series like this you'll get a book that serves as a transition from one book to the other. The story felt like this kind of book. This book was trying to get Hornblower from the battle in the previous book back to London for the next book. This book had no plot really of the ongoing battle between France and Britain where one side was trying to outwit the other nor tension between characters the way "Midshipman" or "Lieutenant" did. Considering how Forester wrote the books out of sequence it's probably understandable to have a book like this in order to complete the picture of Hornblower's career. So Forester shouldn't be blamed for the lack of plot. The book on its own isn't that great yet necessary in order to maintain continuity of the series.
Escape, daring do, and knigthood........2004-02-27
Flying colors begins where Ship of the Line left off. Hornblower is in a Spanish prison in Rosas after sacrificing his ship Sutherland by attacking and destroying an enemy fleet. Along with his loyal lieutenant Bush and his servant Brown, Hornblower is soon loaded on a carriage for the trip to Paris where he is to be hanged as a public display by Napoleon. But of course it's hard to hang a man when the author is on his side. The carriage breaks down in a snowstorm and as luck would have it there is a river and a boat nearby. Always a man of action Hornblower makes his escape and stumbles into the home of a left over royal sympathizer who helps his party to hide until spring when they can make their way down river and escape. In the French port, Hornblower assumes the identity of a Dutch officer, commandeers a captured English cutter, Witch of Endor, and a crew of slave laborers to sail out of the harbor under French noses. Despite his constant self doubt he returns triumphantly to England where he finds out that during his absence his wife died, his beloved Barbara's husband died, and instead of losing his rank for losing his ship he is knighted to the order of the bath for heroism (and politics). The detail of ships and sailing in the early 19th century make the Hornblower series must reading for any man who loves the sea.

Book Description
Increasing use of digital signals for transmitting data in television, photography and printing means the reproduction of pictorial colour in the 21
st century continues to drive innovation in its development.
Hunt’s classic text The Reproduction of Colour has been fully revised and updated for the sixth edition to provide a comprehensive introduction to colour imaging and colour reproduction. New illustrations, diagrams and photographs ensure that both students and practising engineers using colour images can gain a full understanding of the theory and practical applications behind the phenomena they encounter.
Key features:
- Describes the fundamental principles of colour reproduction for photography, television, printing and electronic imaging.
- Provides detailed coverage of the physics of light and the property of colorants.
- Includes new chapters on digital printing and digital imaging, which discuss colour reproduction on HDTV and desktop publishing.
- Presents expanded coverage of the evaluation of colour appearance.
The Reproduction of Colour is already used as a basis for lectures in universities and specialist institutions and continues to be an essential resource for scientists, engineers and developers needing to appreciate the technologies of colour perception.
Reviews of the Fifth Edition:
"The book is beautifully written and superbly presented. It is a credit to both author and publisher, and deserves to be on the shelves of anyone who has any concern with the reproduction of colour."
From The Journal of Photographic Science, Vol. 43 1995
"Using his ability as a teacher, Dr Hunt has made potentially very difficult topics quite readable…he brings the insight that leads the reader to a greater depth of understanding."
From Color Research and Application, Vol. 23 1998
The Society for Imaging Science and Technology is an international society that aims to advance the science and practices of image assessment. A major objective of the Wiley-IS&T series will be to explain the latest scientific and technological developments in the field of imaging at a professional level. The broad scope of the series will focus on imaging in all its aspects, with particular emphasis on digital printing, electronic imaging, photofinishing, image preservation, image assessment, image archiving, pre-press technologies and hybrid imaging systems.
Customer Reviews:
The best book on color photogaphy I have ever read.......2007-04-29
In my opinion, this is the best book on color photography that I have read. Of course, it covers other topics, but it devotes a substantial amount of text, graphs and formulas to that topic. In recent months, I have acquired a fair number of books on the subject of photography and color theory, some of them very formula-intensive and some descriptive and math-primitive; but this one stands head and shoulder above the rest in its effort to describe the fundamental principles.
I bought this book primarily because I wanted to learn whether it is possible, and if it is, how to predict the RGB density values of negative film versus the CYM density of the photo enlarging filter. I believe that I have found my answers in this book. Yet I was also quite pleasantly surprised to learn a lot more about color photography and reproduction. As I was reading this book, many things to which I had had unanswered questions from reading those other books have fallen in their logical place.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in color photography and who wants to learn not only the practical aspects of it (i.e. the result and the practice) but also the "why" of it (i.e. its scientific and experimental fundamentals). You do, though, have to have some knowledge of linear algebra and chemistry, although I would not call this book math-intensive.
The definitive reference on the reproduction of color........1997-09-17
The author has an impressive array of initials after his name; he is, amongst other things, a Doctor of Science, a Member of the Imperial College, an Associate of the Royal College of Science, and a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society as well as a Visiting Professor of Physiological Optics and of Colour Science, and a former Assistant Director of Research at Kodak. He has also been Chairman of the Colorimetry Committee of the International Commision on Illumination, and Chairman of the International Colour Association.
First published in 1957 and now in its much enhanced 5th edition, The Reproduction of Colour is the most comprehensive single resource available. Two quotes from the preface to the 5th edition describe what it is about:
"The object (is to present) the fundamental principles of colour reproduction, whether by photography, television, or printing in the hopes that all those engaged in producing, selling, buying, or using colour pictures will be able to see the nature of the problems they encounter. Those who want a general statement on colour reproduction will find it in the first part, and those who want a more detailed discussion of any one application in which they are particularly interested (will find it) in the later parts."
and
"The reproduction of colour involves physiology, psychology, physics, chemistry, and technology. presents complexities, (and) involves a wide variety of enterprises".
Even though there are individuals skilled in processing and printing their own color film, and DTP bureaux had taken over some of the work of traditional printing houses, color reproduction was, until not so long ago, the province of technicians in the photographic, printing, and television industries, Now we have crossed the threshold of a new era in which a massive technology transfer is taking place, putting effective control over color into the hands of a much wider range of users. Even home users now have available to them very powerful tools that enable production of images that are, to the ordinary eye, indistinguishable from quality photographic prints.
That brings with it a need to understand the technology of color reproduction, and the definitive text is Dr Hunt's book. I have rated it 10/10 because of the remarkably wide range of disciplines covered and its astounding technical depth.
Without it most of the information presented would have to be gleaned from numerous other books, professional journals, and published papers. Further, one does not have to have a scientific background to gain some understanding of what is involved in the reproduction of color. The fields covered television, photography, and printing are becoming less discrete with the application of digital technology; those who use computerized systems for the reproduction of color images will find relevant information spread throughout most parts of this book.
It is not a popular account, a color-for-cretins guide, or a how-to manual. This is a technical resource written in a style that makes it readable without diluting its professional integrity. Not all readers will need, or even want, to know the chemical structure of cyclic methylene magneta couplers, but may want information about the effects of signal processing on color reproduction. In what other recently published text would one find a comparison table of film speeds that includes the Weston system?
The Reproduction of Colour should be in any library with holdings on technical subjects; professionals in DTP, printing, photolabs, television, and digital imaging should have it; and anyone teaching or studying graphic arts, computer science, photography, printing, or subjects related to television technology should be aware of this edition. A check of some large libraries suggests that librarians may think earlier editions are good enough, but new developments demand this latest edition. Teachers of science in sub-tertiary institutions may well find this a useful text for its practical application of science to topical real-life problems.
The book is divided into parts: Fundamentals, Color Photography, Color Television, Color Printing, and Evaluating Color Appearance. Each chapter opens with an introduction that provides a succinct overview of the topic.

Book Description
The Honourable Christopher Fancot is forced into an outrageous masquerade by the tangled affairs of his wayward family.
Customer Reviews:
Very cleverly plotted twin romance........2006-12-20
One of the 'younger' romances Heyer wrote. It starts with Kit who has just returned to London unexpectedly trying to rouse his brother from his house - it is all closed up and Kit has to break in only to find out from his mother that his twin brother, the Earl of Denville, has been missing for a days and no one knows where. Suspecting that he has fled simply because he is a bit of a tearaway they realise that they must buy time to find out whedre he has gone. This would not normally be a problem only the Earl has just become betrothed, a match for money not love, and the finances are needed for the family.
Kit agrees to masquerade as his brother, reluctantly - and meets Cressy - his brother's betrothed. Confusion and layers of deception are heaped on one another. There are a cast of great characters to back everything up - amongst them the Dowager Lady Denville - a ditsy character to rival the best that Bridget Jones can dish out - and sir Bonamy, her somewhat overweight but very kind admirer.
A nice contrast of ridiculous and serious, a well balanced and complex novel with enough comedy and romance to keep everyone happy. Mostly younger characters but mature romance too.
A unique take on the mistaken identity, twins story, another Heyer gem!.......2006-05-14
I have read and loved a few Georgette Heyer novels and each novel is better than the last one I'd read. The last Heyer novel I read was Sprig Muslin and it was one of the best Regency novels I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Well, False Colours is my new favorite novel by this wonderful author. False Colours tells the story of a young army officer who visits his home after he gets the unsettling feeling that his twin brother, the Earl of Denville, is in some kind of trouble. When he arrives to his family's London home, he discovers that his twin brother has been missing for over a week. Kit is forced to attend a soiree in which he will ask for a young woman's hand in marriage. Things get complicated when his brother's intended fancies herself in love with this much nicer, more charming fiance, but he cannot stop the charade because a marriage has to take place in order to pay for his mother's many gambling debts. But what will happen to Kit and Cressy? Will they fall in love? And what of Kit's twin brother? What transpires is a story of mistaken identity with plenty of laughs and unexpected surprises. There are various twists throughout the novel.
This has got to be one of the funniest novels ever written! Heyer's humor is priceless. The characters are hilarious and quirky and their one-liners are wonderful. The novel is written in the form of a Regency comic farce with oddball situations and colorful characters that characterize this brand of comedy. I love Kit's mother! She sort of reminds me of Pride and Prejudice's Mrs. Bennett. And I love the humor centered on the valets, butlers, grooms and other servants. Theirs is the kind of quirkiness and nosiness that I imagine existed among the servants at their masters' homes. Brilliant! But what I love the most is Kit. It is so refreshing to read about a hero who is neither a misogynist, a rake or a tortured soul (though I do like the latter). He is just a sweet, intelligent, serious, honorable and handsome man who loves his family. Cressy, the heroine, is also wonderful, but less "spirited" than other Heyer heroines. As for the historical aspects and references, I have commented on the author's eye for historical detail and accuracy in the other reviews I've written of her work, but I am again impressed with her ability to create Regency England as I'm sure the aforementioned time period had been. She is by far the only Regency romance writer who is almost 100% faithful to the period in not only writing precise details and descriptions but also with the language. I get so tired of reading characters in historical novels that sound more like modern-day, twenty-something-year-old people smacking gum while uttering the latest slang words and phrases. Heyer was an early to mid twentieth century writer, which is probably why her novels sound classic (and they are in fact classics), but I feel that some of today's historical writers should get their clues from this wonderful author. False Colours is a gem and I cannot recommend this hilarious, romantic novel enough.
False Colours.......2004-11-11
Georgette Heyer is a great author. I hope this one is brought back new soon, as it is one I don't have. Heyer's specialty is in the comedy and lightness she brings to her romances. There have also been reviews about how intelligent and interesting her heroines are, compared to other writings of the era. The books are longer and have more meat in them, at once delightful light reading with a touch of humor, sophistication and intellectualism.
My favorite Heyer!.......2004-08-20
In Regency England, a younger son/army officer, Kit, travels home upon the feeling that something has happened to his twin brother, the Earl of Denville. He finds his charming and scatterbrained mother worried to death, as Denville has been absent from home for 10 days; this very night, Denville is to go to a family party at the home of his soon-to-be intended wife in order to obtain the consent of her eccentric and sharp-tongued grandmother. The mother, while not wanting Denville to sacrifice himself on the altar of a marriage of convenience, nevertheless is anxious for the marriage, as Denville's trustees will release his fortune to him upon his marriage; this will allow her extravagant debts to be paid. Kit is persuaded to take Denville's place just for this one night in order that Cressy, the lovely and kind young lady in question, is not dealt the unforgiveable insult of Denville's absence from the "engagement" party.
Complications and fiascos ensue, supported by a multitude of minor characters.......grooms, former nannys, butlers, valets, elderly suitors......that spring fully to life with witty dialog through Heyer's pen. It is to be expected that Kit (as Denville) and Cressy fall in love; she can't imagine why she likes him so much better now than before! It needs only Denville's return, with his arm in a sling, to further complicate this funny and heartwarming story.
"False Colours, great story".......2004-05-27
It is so well read, my copy has fallen apart. I keep hoping it will be reissued. The story is lovely, funny and the characters are very enjoyable. Kit is the nice brother, and his twin is missing. All the other characters add spice and life to this well-told tale. Their mother is a riot!

Book Description
Unlike many art instruction books that focus on capturing realistic images, this unusual title offers inspiration and instruction on using pastels to translate landscapes into evocative abstractions. Putting emphasis on the pure-pigment aspect of pastels, award-winning artist Mark Leach offers exciting insights into the powerful connection between color and feeling. Designed for artists of all abilities, it covers everything from making composition sketches to displaying the finished work, and includes chapters on light, form, and texture; understanding the color wheel; and painting from sketchbooks and photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Great for learning abstraction.......2007-01-11
One of the best books in my art library. Mark Leach describes clearly his process in developing luminous color with pastels, while abstracting subject matter to the simplest of shapes. I love this book and use it constantly, and I am an oil painter. Valuable, in my opinion, regardless of your medium.
That person is SO wrong!.......2007-01-07
The first person who commented on Raw Colour evidently was under the impression that this wonderful book was merely a how-to title. Having read Raw Colour from cover at least twice, I can truly say that the person who wrote that negative comment was totally wrong in interpreting this book as a how-to for abstraction! That could not be more mistaken! It's definitely not a how-to book. It's a wonderfully exciting book covering one artist's way of exploring his feelings about his subject and how he is able to express them through his use of color. I found it a very freeing book and one that reignites my desire to paint every time I open it, which is often. It is an exciting new addition to my very large library on art and pastel in particular. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in color, pastel and art expression in general. Mikki Root Dillon, PSA
Not enough substance.......2007-01-03
There are so many better books on abstraction. I would give this one a pass.

Bought this book for grandson.......2007-06-14
Bought this book for grandson and he loves it! Now passed on the his brother.
2 kids LOVED it.......2006-04-27
This book was one of my first son's favorites - it was so tattered I was afraid to put it in #2's crib for fear he'd bite off a piece! Well, #2 has discovered it at 15 months, and no other book will do (except sometimes "Go dogs go".) We read it over and over and over. And over. I just logged on today to find more books by this author. (I don't know if this book can take partial credit, but my first son was most precocious with his color words!)
Cute Book for Kids..........2006-02-08
My daughter loves to look at pictures of babies so she absolutely loved this book. The pictures are really cute and go with a color. Great introduction to colors for kids.
Very Cute!!.......2005-09-21
Even my 3 month old loves to look at the cute babies in this board book. Not only is it an opportunity to introduce colors to your child, but you can point out eyes, noses, mouths, and smiles on the babies.
My one-year-old enjoys it immensely.......2005-09-10
Following in the tradition of BABY FACES, which my son has loved since he was 3-months-old, I LOVE COLORS is graphically simple and very colorful. My son really enjoys it and always mirrors the smile of the happy babies pictured in the book. It is very object and color specific, and helped my son say flower and glasses in the short time we've had it. Also easy for baby to turn the big board pages.
