This was a gift that I gave with a doll that had 3 faces (Little Red Riding Hood, Grandma, and the Wolf). The combination went over really well.

This was the bestest book I have ever read!!! I didn't like the big bad ugly mean wolf though. He was evil!!! The ending was good though!

I like this version of Little Red Riding Hood because no one gets killed in the end. This book takes place in the woods. Little Red Riding Hood was walking to her grandma's house and decided to take a different path. When she got to grandma's house, there was the wolf wearing grandma's nightgown, which had sheep print on it. The wolf locked grandma away in the closet in hopes of saving her for a late night snack. Luckily the wolf didn't eat or hurt anyone, he accidentally fell out of a window, tumbled down a hill and ran away. Afterwards Little Red unlocked the closet door and let grandmother out. They later had a picnic and lived happily ever after.

Choosing one of the few fairy tales that does not conclude with a wedding, Catherine Orenstein reinterprets the many versions of "Little Red Riding Hood" by setting the tale against the mores and values of its times. The result is a highly entertaining and interesting conversation about one of our best-known stories.

Starting with the first-known published version, Orenstein points out Charles Perrault's lesson to young girls entering the lascivious and political court of Louis XIV. She traces the story further back to a shockingly playful rendition that includes bzous (werewolves) and cannibalism. In this version, she revives the symbolism that relates to the feminine by pointing out the odd questions of the bzou: "Which path are you taking... the path of needles or the path of pins?" Orenstein also takes a look at more modern versions, including Anne Sexton's poem "Red Riding Hood" and Matthew Bright's film Freeway, taking on, as she examines these and other modern versions of the old tale, the machismo wolf and the Gen-X grrrl.

Though expansive in her research, Orenstein's interpretations are occasionally too simplistic. In "Grandmother's Tale," Riding Hood's cannibalistic meal of her grandmother is reduced to a "symbolic reminder that the old will be reborn in the young." There is nothing mentioned of the talking cat who decries Riding Hood, saying, "She is a slut who eats the flesh and drinks the blood of her granny!" But what Orenstein lacks in depth, she more than makes up for in her encompassing study. In all, 10 tales are examined, as well as a vast historical study of the times they were published. Written with lively prose, Orenstein has produced a book that will spark thought and conversation, encouraging readers to find the wolf, the grandmother, and the little girl within. --Karin Rosman

Book Description

A young scholar goes to Grandmother's house--and beyond--to uncover the surprisingly complex and contradictory morals we've learned from this seemingly simple folk tale.

In Little Red Riding Hood Uncloaked Catherine Orenstein reveals for the first time the intricate sexual politics, moral ambiguities, and philosophical underpinnings of Red Riding Hood's epic journey to her grandmother's house--and how, from the nursery on, fairy tales influence our view of the world.

Beginning with its first publication as a cautionary tale on the perils of seduction, written in reaction to the licentiousness of the court of Louis XIV, Orenstein traces the many lives the tale has lived since then, from its appearance in modern advertisements for cosmetics and automobiles, the inspiration it brought to poets such as Anne Sexton, and its starring role in pornographic films. In Little Red Riding Hood Uncloaked, Red appears as seductress, hapless victim, riot grrrrl, femme fatale, and even she-wolf, as Orenstein shows how through centuries of different guises, the story has served as a barometer of social and sexual mores pertaining to women. Full of fascinating history, generous wit, and intelligent analysis, Little Red Riding Hood Uncloaked proves that the story of one young girl's trip through the woods continues to be one of our most compelling modern myths.

anyone interested in fairy tales or in the way cultural and historical aspects influence and shape stories in general, fairy tales in particular, will find this book worth while. it was an easy read, well researched, great use of illustrations, quite comprehensive without exhausting the topic. one of the best things is that each chapter starts off with the complete version of the tale that is gonna be analyzed, which is great.

5 out of 5 stars The morphology of a fairy tale.......2006-08-11

Though just reduced to writing within the past three hundred years, little red riding hood existed even earlier as an oral tradition.

Interestingly enough, there's evidence to show that little red riding hood was widely told and retold in both the east and west with both oriental and European versions.

A good scholar, Orenstein faithfully recounts ten versions of the story as it has been retold in the west over the past three hundred years. Though some forms have been more baudy and violent, throughout Orenstein has seen the story as a sort of potential myth of female empowerment.

As one reads this book, one is reminded of the various versions of the flood story as told and retold through the world's religious traditions. Just as each religion took the story and retold it in its own distinctive fashion, each culture and time has taken the little red riding hood story retelling it in its own distinctive fashion.

In this sense, the retellings say more about the culture or individual doing the talking than they do about any intrinsic pedagogic value the story may have in its own right.

Though like many commentators, Orenstein referenced Joseph Campbell when discussing the imponderables of why certain stories seem to have such pan cultural staying power, it should be noted that great strides have taken place in behavioral psychology in the past fifty years since Campbell's Hero With a Thousand Faces. So, those interested in really learning why certain stories have staying power over others would be wise to consult the works of Pascal Boyer.

For her part though, Orenstein has produced a great book that essentially tells the story by letting the story speak for itself.

5 out of 5 stars Red is dead long live, uh, red.......2006-04-21

This book is a fascinating insight into the background of LRRH and many of the re- written versions through time, modern to post modern. I felt compelled to read it all on each occasion that I had to read, only to have to peel myself away to get on with everyday life! Apparently I am a wolf, as are all men, but in the modern world we all know that wolfs are female as well as male, and the same goes for our precious LRRH remember those with sweetest tounge are the most dangerous of all!!

5 out of 5 stars Cross-Dressing Wolves and Other Tales.......2005-08-26

In the best tradition of interdisciplinary studies, this book covers a little bit of everything, first grounded in the well-known fairy tale of `Little Red Riding Hood', which evolved from a cautionary tale for young women in the court of Louis XIV in the 17th C. In this tale (which is revealed later to possibly be based on an even older story featuring the Grandmother - and a plot found in various Western and Eastern cultures), the `wolf' is not an animal to be avoided, but a wolfish man, intent on deflowering and ruining a young woman who is not wise enough to run away. From this point, the tale is discussed as it evolves into the sanitized - yet still remarkably gory - children's story of today. Every character is analyzed, and their transformations by the brothers Grimm to pornography to modern re-telling (the film `Freeway' [1996] is one example) shows how this story still registers in our present world. Orenstein is an entertaining writer, and the visuals included support her points well - the Heinz salad cream advert is a good example of our modern dark humor: it shows the wolf, still in Grandma's clothes (there's a whole chapter on the cross-dressing wolf), stating how "Any food tastes supreme" (177) with this condiment! There's so much material in this book, it's impossible to do it justice in a small review such as this: take my advice, and read this book!

5 out of 5 stars A beautifully illustrated classic.......2007-05-19

This is one of the most outstanding children's books that we own. I first heard of Andrea Wisnewski's Little Red Riding Hood in the Wall Street Journal, where it recieved rave reviews. I ordered it right away, one for my daughter and one for my neice. The book did not disappoint. The illustrations are stunning and so interesting to study closely. The cultural details in each picture add to the charm of the story. The illustrations become even more engaging when you realize the medium used. Ms. Wisnewski created black & white prints made from papercut designs and then hand painted the prints with watercolors. Amazing! And that only gives testimony to the illustrations. The script is just as lovely. The classic story of Little Red Riding Hood is told in such a charming and entertaining way. It is as much a treat for me, as it is for my children, to read this story together. It is one of the "special" books that is kept on the highest shelve of the bookcase to preserve it for years and generations to come.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely...Simply Lovely.......2007-05-17

Lovely is really the only way to describe Wisnewski's retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. The most attractive feature of this particular version of one of the most retold stories around is the illustrations, which are actually not "illustrations" in the traditional sense. Here the author uses a cut paper technique that simulates traditional woodcuts which is quite effective and really compliments the story, giving it an old world flavor. The text is simple and is framed in each two page illustration, adding to the feel that what the reader is looking at is an old handmade story book with colorfully decorated and detailed woodcut artwork. This was truly a joy to read visually. The story itself follows the traditional bones and grandma IS eaten while Red buys time to try to escape with the "oh Grandma" lines, which I thought was a nice touch. There's nothing here that will scare young readers despite the wolf eating the Grandma and the Woodcutter cutting her out of the wolf (scene tastefully screened by bed curtains and left to the imagination). So what you have is pretty tame, simple text pared with rich artwork that makes Wisnewski's retelling of Little Red Riding Hood ideal for read aloud or for beginning readers. I'd recommend it for anyone who loves a good picture story book or who collects fairy/folktales, it would make a fine addition to any children's library, I give it 4 Stars!

Book Description

Little readers will love second-guessing this funny, fractured fairy tale that replays the story of Little Red Riding Hood from the poor maligned wolf's point of view.

No, please. Look at me.
Would I LIE to you?
It was the old woman who started it.

Everyone knows there are at least two sides to every story, and if you believe in the big-eared, sharp-toothed villain of LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD, there's a logical explanation for everything. As our antihero tells it, it all starts with the helpful wolf doing odd jobs for Grandma (are you sure you don't want to sit a little closer?). How was he to know that he spoiled Little Red would come along and ruin a good working relationship? Zooming in dramatically from strategic angles, the amusing illustrations offer visual clues that this is a story to be taken with a grain of salt - and a lot of giggling.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beware the Wolf's Story!.......2006-01-21

Toby Forward hails from Liverpool, England and has written another fine book for children - "The Wolf's Story: What Really Happened to Little Red Riding Hood". Wonderfully illustrated by Ishar Cohen of Palestine, the artwork reinforces the perspective of the wolf on the events in the traditional Little Red Riding Hood story, retold here by the wolf thanks to Toby Forward.

First of all, nothing that happened in the Little Red Riding Hood story was the wolf's fault - "Would I lie to you? It was the old woman who started it". He says that he was just a friendly wolf doing odd jobs for Grandma - "Anyway, I did odd jobs for the old woman. Called her Grandma". Then that spoiled Little Red Riding Hood showed up and ruined everything - "so I leaped out of bed, ...Then she started screaming". Now that you know the truth, you can trust a wolf, can't you? "Do I LOOK like the sort of wolf who goes around eating grandmas?", he asks.

This book is a good example of dishonesty and lying, which the wolf engages in throughout his story. The story helps children to tell the difference between a truthful statement and a false statement that purports to be true. Children learn what it is called when someone says something that is not true - it is called a lie.

This book can be used as an introduction to discussing types of dishonesty with your child, from exaggerating, flattery, twisting the truth, and not telling the whole truth (so you don't get into trouble) to cheating on tests or outright lying. For extension, children can go to www.ImpeachBlair.org and read the lies that Blair manufactured for Bush to do American-powered British empire against Iraqis. Helping children develop honesty and the ability to detect dishonesty is important to their ability to make their own decisions despite attempts by others to manipulate them, whether it be their peers, politicians, or consumer culture.

In short, a wonderful book to help your child detect dishonesty.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic Redrawn .......2004-10-09

Through childhood, many fairytales, wives tales, and urban legends grace the ears and massage the minds of people of all cultures. Stories children treasure live on and mentor their own children for generations. Even though the basic storyline is not new, it continues to entertain. New illustrations, new twists in the plot, and additional or more colorful characters all combine to help the classics survive the time change and speak to young, modern minds. LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD, illustrated by John Kurtz, is one such example of an adapted classic.

We all know the story of Little Red Riding Hood, however, Kurtz has adapted the illustrations to suit our children in the African-American community. The main character is beautifully drawn, as well as is the supporting cast. Aside from the aesthetically pleasing pages and the wonderful, "Disney-esque" images, Kurtz also adjusts the story ever so slightly to teach children the importance of obedience. My only complaint with the book is that on a couple pages the pictures, as cool as they are, don't match with the story. Other than that, this redrawn classic is a good addition to the budding library of our children.

Book Description

Jack Zipes presents the many faces of Little Red Riding Hood. Bringing together 35 of the best versions of the tale, from the Brothers Grimm to Anne Sexton, Zipes uses the tales to explore questions of Western culture, sexism and politics.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars intriguing!.......2001-05-01

This is a fascinating look at how one story changes through the course of time. Zipes presents many versions of "Little Red" -- and each change represents a change in the ideas of the storyteller and his or her time and the needs of the listener. Observing the story's progression through the last few centuries tells us much about what we have lost and gained, known and forgotten, desired and feared. "Little Red" becomes a microcosm for the developing individual and social human psyche, as we watch what the cautionary tale cautions us against and takes for granted. A wonderful read for anyone interested in myth, sociology, fiction writing, or cultural development/studies.

Little Red Riding Hood. Ever heard of it? Retelling old stories is always a little risky--you've either got to bring some worthwhile new twist to the tale, or you've got to do such a great job telling it that we're all willing to forget for a minute just how everything's going to turn out. Fortunately for the celebrated Ms. Hood, Marjorie Priceman (winner of a Caldecott Honor for the buoyant Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin) proves herself by doing both--this pop-up edition of an old favorite is energetic and original.

Priceman's dignified but still playful style suits these old clothes well, with a very traditional Red peeking out from under her huge flowing hood and a wolf that's all lithe and toothy. Each page achieves added oomph from the book's clever format: a primary pop-up spread sets the stage, then an inset on the right for text opens up to reveal the next event. Red looks lovely and lively throughout, but the wolf--of course--steals all the best scenes ("The better to EAT you with," etc.). Priceman shows similar storytelling skill in How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World. You'll find that same offhand humor here, from the very dismayed crew of gingerbread people in the oven to the copies of the Herald Tribune strategically strewn about ("Peep's Sheep Found," "3 Pigs: 'We Will Rebuild'"). (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

The better to see this delightful pop-up with! Written and illustrated with humor and soul by award-winner Marjorie Priceman, this adaptation of the classic fairy tale will prove to be a favorite for generations to come.

    5 out of 5 stars A rare treasure.......2007-01-12

I collect pop up books and this is a rare treasure. I feel privileged to own one of only 100 copies in the world. This book has a great deal of creativity and originality for such a familiar story. There are many great pop-ups and illustrations such as; the wolf licking his lips and when he sneezes out the grandmother. It has a wonderful moral twist at the end. I love this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-05-07

This pop-up is awesome. I am completly amazed at how wonderful each page is. It's the little details that are so nice. I can't wait to share this with my daughter. She loved her first pop-up, which wasn't made so great and broke apart. I plan on keeping this as a special read. I think this may have turned me into a pop-up book fan!!!

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.......2005-01-01

I was absolutely enchanted with this pop up book, it is the best pop up book I've ever seen. The paper engineering is incredible - a "grandma" that is revealed to be a wolf, the wolf sneezing out grandma, grandma and red riding hood chasing the wolf... My 2 year old is enthralled with it - but I am careful to read it together with her... a toddler could easily tear the beautiful pop-us.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF THE BEST!.......2002-06-17

MY NEICE INSTANTLY FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS AS DID I!
