Album Description

Ronnie Lane founded two of England's most beloved bands, Small Faces (Lane, Steve Marriott, Ian McLagan, Kenney Jones, 1965-1969) and The Faces (Lane, McLagan, Jones, Ron Wood, Rod Stewart, 1969-1974), co-writing songs like 'Itchycoo Park' and 'Ooh La La.' His extraordinary musical journey covered three decades, before he was diagnosed with MS and passed away at a relatively young age in 1997. His solo recordings were made with a succession of bands called Slim Chance, which included the cream of Britain's folk/rock/r'n'b musicians, as well as contributions from Lane's dear friends Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend. 'Just For A Moment' includes all of Lane's finest songs and is the first authorized release of his solo material in the US. This album coincides with the DVD release of the excellent documentary film, 'The Passing Show - The Life and Music of Ronnie Lane' and the reissue of the Pete Townshend/Ronnie Lane collaboration album 'Rough Mix', the best-selling boxed set 'The Faces: Five Guys Walk Into A Bar', and ex-Faces member Ian McLagan's tribute CD to Lane, 'Spiritual Boy'.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, most enjoyable, Great drivin tunes for the car !.......2007-03-26

Ronnie's solo work is just great. I always appreciated his work with the Steve and Rod versions of Faces. This work is a total shift from Faces/Small Faces feel to a more mellow earthy sound. Very nice in the same way Rod Stewart did on his early solo works while still with the Faces, Gasoline Alley, Country Comforts, Hand rags, Cut across Shorty etc... In fact Ronnie played of some of that solo work.
All in all a very pleasant collection of his solo work. My wife drove my car the otherday and asked me who was that guy in CD slot 4 that has the cool, mellow folk, New Orleans, Dylan, early Band, pre-disco Rod Stewart sound?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation From the Heart and Soul of The Faces.......2007-02-02

The Faces were one of the great rock bands of the seventies. They had the charismatic frontman Rod Stewart (who would later go on to superstardom) and guitarist Ron Wood (who has spent the last three decades with the Rolling Stones), but they also had founding member Ronnie Lane, who--just as the Faces were at the peak of their success--left the band in 1973 to pursue a solo career.

Unfortunately, in 1977 Lane was diagnosed with MS, which severely restricted his music career from that point on. He died from complications of the disease in 1997. During his post-Faces career, Lane only recorded four studio albums along with the 1977 collaboration with Pete Townshend, ROUGH MIX.

Ronnie's music is hard to pigeonhole: It borrows from rock and roll, folk, country and English music hall. His bands often included fiddle, dobro, accordion, piano and mandolin--all to wonderful effect. While Lane's albums have been available (mostly through the U.K.'s New Millennium Communications label), this is the first compilation made for the U.S. market. The release date comes on the heels of what would have been Lane's sixtieth birthday last April 1. It begins with his debut 1973 single "How Come" (which peaked at #11 in the U.K.) and covers all five of his studio albums through 1980's SEE ME, represented by "Barcelona," which includes Eric Clapton on guitar.

Lane released a total of eight singles, but other than "How Come" only "The Poacher" cracked the U.K. top 40. [It peaked at #36 in 1974.] But don't let the lack of chart success diminish the quality of the music. For me, Ronnie Lane's music has a sincerity and poignancy that always makes me smile. If you're looking for a solid introduction to this amazing artist's music, this is an excellent place to start. [And good news for Lane's fans: While there are no details given, the liner notes announce this collection is only "part of a larger body of works soon to be released on this label(Lane Signature Sounds)." Welcome news indeed!] VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Introduction to Igor Stravinsky!!.......2004-05-19

Sony Music's "The Essential Igor Stravinsky" truly lives up to its title. This double-CD set includes nearly every important piece of work (either in part or in whole) by the great Russian composer. The set also presents the pieces in chronological order beginning in 1908 with "Fireworks" and ending in 1966 with his final piece, the short but simple "Owl and The Pussycat". In between, there are excerpts from Stravinsky's most famous works including the first part of "The Rite Of Spring" and highlights from the "Firebird" and "Petrushka" ballets. There are also lesser-known works included as well as his harmonically rearranged version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" (a rendition which caused a stir in the early 1940's). The entire collection concludes with a rare recorded interview with Igor Stravinsky himself in which he remembers the infamous premere of "The Rite Of Spring".
The CD booklet includes detailed liner notes as well as a written tribute by Trey Anastasio of the band Phish. The sound quality of the recordings is amazing (even on the historic 1934 recording of "Piano Rag Music"). All in all, this an excellent collection of works by the great Igor Stravinsky. In a sense, this compilation gives the composer the 'rock musician' treatment. It's a 'greatest hits' album and a career-spanning retrospective that serves as an ideal introduction to Igor's music. Even if your not a fan of Classical music, it isn't difficult to listen to the works of Stravinsky and not be stirred.
Definitely The Essential Igor Stravinsky!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

3 out of 5 stars English is an asset and a drawback.......2004-07-20

The best thing about this recording of Carmen is the libretto. Conductor David Parry penned this facile and dramatic English translation. He avoids the pitfalls of literal translation to achieve an idiomatic flow that matches the rhythm of the original lyrics. I use this as a reference libretto for any of the French Carmens.

Unfortunately, the performance suffers from being sung in English. The singers declaim their parts with such proper British diction that Carmen comes across as a school marm. The spoken dialog is delivered beat for deliberate beat and is dripping with reverb. It makes the plaza, tavern and mountain pass all sound like a sewer pipe.

This is a good first Carmen for someone trying to understand the work. The libretto itself is a good investment for further listening. For an enjoyable performance with an emphasis on character and action, I recommend Regina Resnik on the London Double Decker set.

5 out of 5 stars You Will Love Opera After Hearing Carmen In English.......2004-02-09

What a perfect introduction to opera. This newly released recording will surely get you hooked into opera. Carmen, a French opera by Georges Bizet, is the most recognizable and most popular in the opera world. It's famous melodies- the overture, the Habanera, The Toreador Song have all been featured in everything from cellular phone ring tones to Superbowl Commercial (last year's Superbowl with The "Opera In English" label has been making Italian operas into English for a number of years now. Also on the market are Verdi's La Traviata in English (with soprano Valerie Masterson as Violetta) Handel's Julius Caesar with Janet Baker and even Wagner's epic Ring Of The Nibeling sung in English. This is a terrific recording and I highly recommend it if you want to get into opera. Listen to this version first and then try the real, original French version Bizet had written. Patricia Bardon is sensational, sexy and dramatic as Carmen.

The real strength of this version is the dynamic drama. With the advantage of being sung in English, we get better insight on characters' emotions and motives, and we understand the drama a lot better. Carmen is all about great drama. Bizet drew the plot from the French writer Prosper Merimee's dark short story. Carmen is the ultimate femme fatale- a devil-may-care, sexy Gypsy living in Spain, seduces the conservatively raised soldier Don Jose, stealing him away from his fiancee, the passive Micaela, living a life of underground smuggling and rowdy taverns. "Habanera" and "The Gypsy Song and Dance" are very expressive of Carmen's extraordinarily liberal lifestyle. Don Jose, however, has fallen deeply in love- as he shows us in his song/aria "The Flower Song". But Carmen soon becomes tired of his constancy. Don Jose wants a committed, monogamous relationship with Carmen. But Carmen will not submit to love, since she is first and foremost a carnal creature. Eventually, she falls for the handsome Toreador Escamillo. Don Jose, consumed by jealousy, stabs Carmen at a bullfight after Carmen declares her love for Escamillo and rejects Don Jose's love. Don Jose's crazed, obscessive personality shines through in the English version as well. This tragedy has been done in English before so don't think this is the first time. Back in the 50's, there was a film, starring black actors "Carmen Jones" which was treated the same way as this opera- more like an English Broadway musical and with the dubbed singing voice of Marilyn Horne as Carmen. All in all, this recording is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars A wholly credible "Carmen" -- finally!.......2003-09-17

This recording really sells "Carmen" as a drama. Although I have two other recordings of this opera and have seen it performed several times, it never quite worked for me dramatically. But thanks to the fine performances, conducting, and translation here, I've become a "Carmen" convert. Producing a good English-language performance of a foreign opera, especially a warhorse like "Carmen," is much more difficult than it might appear. You need performers who not only can sing the parts (of course) but also can sing *English* and make it halfway intelligible and make it sound like English and make it dramatically convincing to English-speakers. The singers on this recording do an excellent job all around. Don't be put off if you don't recognize their names -- they are up to the task musically and (especially) in their acting. Admittedly, as with *all* English-language recordings, some passages are very hard to understand without reading along, but most of the time the words are clear and effective. I would recommend this recording to any opera beginner or opera lover, even those who normally turn up their noses at performances in translation.

4 out of 5 stars I love Carmen!.......2003-08-15

I do. I can think of no other opera with more melodic inventiveness, and few others with so sure a dramatic pulse. Carmen is popular and it thrills me to say that it is also a very good opera - not always true of popular things.

And what of this recording? Carmen sits well in English, so it is good to hear in translation, although some of the detais in the text jar. Escamillo refers to Jose as "my dear", which sounds rather peculiar, and the guide's line to Micaela: "it's not exactly inviting, is it?" sounds distinctly Middle England rather than Rural Spain. Some of the performers, not least Carmen herself, make the words work, although there are long tracts, especially with the chorus, where the language is distinctly indistinct.

The soloists are, by and large, strong. Patricia Bardon's deep, Handel-friendly voice adapts well to Carmen and she colours the music with phenomenal detail, sounding sexy and provocative from the start with an edge of pride and anger that emerges as the show goes on. She is out of her depth above the stave, though, and some extra top notes in the second act don't show her off to her best advantage. I have previously said that Julian Gavin is poorly served by recordings, though here he sounds much more even and gives a thrilling and musical performance (but his wooden spoken lines let him down). Mary Plazas is a lovely Micaela, rich-voiced and sincere (and word-perfect), but Garry Magee sounds miscast as Escamillo, lacking the ballast at the bottom of the voice to do justice to this tricky role.

The supporting cast is good (Mary Hegarty seems to do nothing but Frasquita these days!) but the really treasurable thing is the conducting. Stepping out of Italian Ottocento, David Parry turns his hand to this French Comedie with an appropriate lightness of touch. His pacing and handling of the set pieces is exemplary and the enrtractes go with a real swing.

A pleasure, then, for the Carmen naive or a novelty for the Carmen-acquainted. I nearly wrote Carmen-weary - but I don't think it's possible.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Collection of Love Songs.......2007-06-22

I have to quickly disagree with those who are looking for more songs crammed in to what is such a breathtaking album of Broadway love songs. The rendition of the songs on this album and the Broadway singers selected for each piece, just are so beautifully recorded and make chills go through me. Whoever created this album, knew exactly what they were doing. This CD is full of nostalgia and artists who know how a song should be sung. They are certainly not making noise as on some Broadway CD's, but they have created an album that will go down in history for some of us who have longed to see such muscials come back to life in a way....that sadly has become a memory.

3 out of 5 stars It is in need of 1 more musical........2005-05-29

I think they need to consider putting one more musical on this CD. This musical would have to be Wicked. What about As Long As Your Mine (from Wicked of course)? I think I would like this CD better if they could put Wicked on it. But of course this may not be true for everyone because obviously my favorite musical of all time is Wicked.

1 out of 5 stars Not enough songs..........2004-10-20

Okay, so I have yet to hear this CD but already I have a quip: Why are there only 16 songs on this CD when the original Broadway's Greatest Love Songs had 20. They're cheating customers out of 4 songs! Also, why doesn't this include any songs from Aida, Triumph of Love, Beauty and the Beast, R&H's Cinderella, The Lion King, or Wicked! And please, "Our Last Summer" from Mamma Mia? Don't get me wrong, I love Mamma Mia, but that is NOT a love song.

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting..........2006-03-19

The string tribute is, of course, not meant to substitute for the originals, but as a No Doubt fan I found the "classical" versions fun and a stimulating alternative. I can put No Doubt albums on repeat and rock out, but it's always great to hear remixes, covers, and different versions of a favorite artist.

I suggest you visit an independent music store or someplace you can better sample the album, rather than rely on the clips. If not, I would recommend the tribute to pretty solid No Doubt fans and to those interested in some refreshing classical music.

    2 out of 5 stars hum..........2005-06-08

some of the songs are alright, don't speak and simple kind of life aRE incredible. hella good and hey baby were a bad choice i think cos they are a bit repetitive when done on a string instument. im a little confused about vague moment..is that a no doubt song?

4 out of 5 stars Good, Depending On Your Taste.......2004-11-17

I know that some people were very disappointed with this CD; I wasn't, but maybe that's just because I am a tried-and-true No Doubt fan- I find it thrilling to hear different renditions of my favorite songs. Yes, some songs hang on the precipice of being tacky, especially the faster ones, like "Hella Good", and, in some ways, "Hey Baby". However, I think some work quite well. Obviously, all the original songs are better, but sometimes I get in a dramatic, classical-music mood, and this CD is awesome. "Ex-Girlfriend" sounds deliciously devious and dark with the deep string instruments, and "Don't Speak", like its original, is so heart-rendingly beautiful it'll pull at your heartstrings.

Overall, take care. I think the CD is well-made, with a good instrumentalists and fine arrangements, but I can understand how it would put some people off. But don't knock it till you give it a listen. And best of all- it's instant kareoke!

2 out of 5 stars Ha ha! Surely it's a joke! What? It isn't?!.......2004-09-18

When I listened to these clips, I cracked up. This is so bad it's funny, kind of like reality TV. If you want a laugh, try this CD. If you want music, I suggest you buy a REAL No Doubt album. No offense if you like chamber music; but these people who did this pathetically bad album have ruined it forever.

5 out of 5 stars Innovative, trendy, sexy and fantastic!.......2004-07-07

I can add a lot more words to the list; motivating, romantic, provacative, eluring, brilliant.... This is GREAT! I love the idea this company has of putting out string quartet versions of your favorite artists. But this CD is marvelous. I got it last week and it is my favorite CD in my collection. A fine tribute indeed. Congratulations to this group for such a fabulous tribute.

5 out of 5 stars "Broadway Shows from the 1960's ~ Percy Faith".......2004-02-23

Percy Faith blends two award winning Broadway Shows together "Subways Are For Sleeping" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 8533 in 1961) and "Do I Hear A Waltz?" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9117 in 1965), following the formula of previous albums from the vault of rare finds ~ two more winners are under the baton of the Maestro.

First twelve tracks "Subways Are For Sleeping", featuring the songs of Betty Comden, Adolph Green and Jule Styne with outstanding arrangements on very catchy tunes ~ like "BE A SANTA", "COMES ONCE IN A LIFETIME", "GETTING MARRIED", "HOW CAN YOU DESCRIBE A FACE?", "I JUST CAN'T WAIT", "I SAID IT AND I'M GLAD", "I'M JUST TAKING MY TIME", "NOW I HAVE SOMEONE", "RIDE THROUGH THE NIGHT", "WHAT IS THIS FEELING IN THE AIR?", "WHEN YOU HELP A FRIEND OUT" and "WHO KNOWS WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN?", all have the hallmark sound and the authentic "Percy Faith Touch" on every selections.

Second twelve tracks ~ "Do I Hear A Waltz", featuring the tunes of Richard Rodgers and Stephen Soundheim enhanced by the performances of arranger/conductor Percy Faith and his Orchestra ~ "A PERFECTLY LOVELY COUPLE", "DO I HEAR A WALTZ?", "HERE WE ARE AGAIN", "MOON IN MY WINDOW", "NO UNDERSTAND", "SOMEONE LIKE YOU", "STAY", "TAKE THE MOMENT", "THANK YOU SO MUCH", "THINKING", "THIS WEEK AMERICANS" and "WE'RE GONNA BE ALL RIGHT", enamored to the luxurious sound of Faith's string arrangements ~ you're immediately hooked on these tracks ~ marvelous performances enthralling listener's for some fifty years.

The people at Collectables should be commended for bringing back some of Maestro Faith's best works on compact disc ~ there is so much more in the vast vaults, hopefully there will be more to follow...gotta love it!
