4 out of 5 stars So underrated...a Bay Area standard.......2007-03-06

A decade before the Bay Area became famous for getting "hyphy," the region was dominated by the independent Young Black Brotha label, which between 1995 and 1996 released album after album of excellent music produced by the great Khayree, from artists the likes of Mac Mall, Mac Dre, Young Lay, and Dubee aka Sugawolf. Ray Luv's 1995 effort "Forever Hustlin'" may be the best of the bunch. Whereas on the other previously mentioned albums, much of the time Khayree's beats did most of the talking, this album is as much about the rapper as it is the beats. Ray Luv has a delivery that could easily be mistaken for 2Pac or Scarface, which is interesting and likable. Lyrically one would not confuse him for one of them, however. While not the greatest lyricist, Ray is a good character, telling stories of his days in the Bay and the life of a pimp and a hustler. What really makes this album so excellent is the production of Khayree, one of the best producers ever to grace the West Coast. Khayree uses all kinds of instruments, from guitars to trombones, to make awesome tracks that always have banging bass and heavy beats. Sometimes, in the middle of a song, Khayree will just stop the beat and put on another one just as good. His production is distinctive and always excellent, being the mark of quality on the YBB releases. I think this album is really underrated, it seems like even though Bay Area rappers like Too Short and E-40 eventually found the national spotlight, Ray Luv and the YBB rappers remain pretty slept-on. It's not perfect, but I highly recommend "Forever Hustlin'," this should be a must-have for fans of gangsta rap.

The intro sets the scene for the album: "tales of triple-beams and ice cream...360 degrees of straight game." Then the amazing beat of the title track kicks in, and the album is in full swing. The title track has a bass heavy beat with a little southern funk in it, and Ray just lets loose. On the guitar-laced "Tha Factor," Ray speaks of the hustling game. "Bubble" is a more laidback song, the chorus is a little weak and kind of corny. "In the Game" is a great song, with a slide trombone in the chorus and great storytelling verses. My favorite song is "Keep Ya Mask On," a straight banger. Ray Luv delivers threatening, seasoned raps and the awesome production reminds me of the beat to Westside Connection's "Bow Down." "I'd Rather Be a Pimp" is a decent track, the production is a lot better than the weird hook, and I'd say the same about "Definition of a Hustla." "We Do This Everyday" is more of an interlude where Ray offers a little insight to his life after some soulful singing. "Ride With the Luvva Man" has great bass and is a really nice track. I also really love "24K," a head-nodding track with some more laidback lyrics. "What U in It 4" is a more aggressive take on the crime life. The cool weed song "Still Smokin' Indo" follows, and the insightful "Stormy Window" is next. "Luv From ah 'G'" is a letter written to an incarcerated friend, think a Bay Area version of Nas's "One Love" with a Khayree beat. The two bonus tracks, "Last Night" and "Cage Bird" are also great.

"Forever Hustlin'" is endlessly enjoyable, consistent, and entertaining both musically and lyrically. This is an album I highly recommend for all fans of Bay Area and West Coast rap. For those just getting into Bay Area music, this should be one of the, if not the, first album you buy.

5 out of 5 stars Classic bay area.......2005-04-21

Khayree is known for making some heavy basslines and nice tracks. On this album it shows how good he really is. I was chillin watching videos in 95' and ''in the game'' came on. As soon as I heard the beat I was blown away, then ray luvs flow was just tears up the track. I knew from then that this whole album would be heavy because of hearing that track, it showed the quality was just shining and there was something there to get. Not long after, I picked it up and it's been a favourite since too. I love this album so much, theres so many rappers ray luv blows away. The bay area was represented right by this man in 95. If you are looking for a classic oakland style or any style classic really, you need to pick this up straight or lose out. Its my favourite ray luv album too. Straight through, start to finish classic. Later!

5 out of 5 stars Hustlin' Forever.......2005-04-07

Ray Luv's release of Forever Hustlin' is tales of game, hustling and gangsterism. With the exception of two tracks, it was produced by producer Khayree, who's work include Mac Mall, laced him with West Coast gangsta grooves. Hailing from Santa Rosa, California, this north bay area player even go robbing with "Keep Ya Mask On". An instant standout is "Bubble" as he gives his struggles in both his career and personal life. When you think Ray Luv or his alter ego, Big Eddie Spaghetti, had no versitility he gives "We Do This Everyday". Even questioning those in the game on "What U In It 4". The Luvva Man ends on a high note with positivity. By paying homiage to the fallen and caged soldiers on "Caged Bird". "Ride Wit The Luvva Man" on an excursion through a hustler's eye that'll be quite a trip.

5 out of 5 stars Anotha classic.......2004-01-07

I'm really blessed that I found the Bay Area rap. Before that I had just heard the well-known rappers like Nas, 2pac, Jay-Z, Ice Cube and etc. After I got to know the Bay Area, I was shown, that there is a whole 'notha level. Forever Hustlin is definitely Ray Luv's best album, Khayree succeeded on the beats perfectly. Ray Luv's voice and lyrics are very dope. The best tracks are "Tha Factor", "Definition of ah Hustla", "Keep Ya Mask On" and "Nothin But a Game". But the whole album is dope, and there are no weak points.

5 out of 5 stars Represent Santa Rosa!.......2003-12-06

If I was stranded on a desert island this is one of the discs I would like to have with me. This album is great from start to finish, and shows off how much potential Ray Luv and the bay area rappers of the time had. Unfortunately, few of them have realized that potential, included Luv himself, who has yet to release an album as complete as Forever Hustlin'.
