This Manson album settles pretty well with me. It has some great tracks, such as "Disposable Teens", "The Fight Song", "Godeatgod", "The Nobodies", "The Love Song", "The Death Song" and even more. It also has some great and well thought out lyrics to accompany its many hit songs. Most of the lyrical content revolves around Manson's feelings toward the Columbine High School incident in 1996 and how the media claimed that the two assassins involved had been great fans of his while only a short time after it was found that not one of the two boys had been even remote fans of Manson's and their statements were disproved.

The only downfall I saw with this album was how it seemed to drag on a bit. It's almost as if Manson was trying to fit just a little too many songs into one disc. Otherwise, the album doesn't have too many noticeable flaws.

Overall, this CD will definitely turn the listener's stomach with its passionately riveting sound and corresponding lyrics. This is definitely one of Manson's more emotionally driven LP's and it's very recognizable to anyone who listens that Manson put his heart and soul into it. This CD will definitely give you something to swallow. Recommended.

The first Manson release of the millenium sees both the singer and his backing band's popularity in doubt, as Emenem and other rappers were all the rage. Not even a throwback to his gothic days could save this from going only gold certified, and gold certified years after its original release date. By this time they were stuck in the 70s, and Manson was again controversial but didn't draw much protest. The music itself is a throwback to his Potrait days, but like I said, the band's popularity was in doubt. It seemed more like the Thrill Kill Kult- famous, but not popular, camp industrial music only someone who didn't care if they were popular themself could get into.

Yes folks, this is Marilyn Manson at his best. After this album, Marilyn Manson would begin their decline.

The Positives: John5's guitar work is at its peak on this album. Songs like "Disposable Teens", "The Fight Song", "The Nobodies", "The Death Song", "Lamb of God", and "The Love Song" are some of the finest Manson guitar tunes to date. Also, the lyrics reach their peak with this album. Lyrically, this album is a proper fuse of Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals. Therefore, I believe this to be the peak of Marilyn Manson. Everything is running on full power (lyrics, guitars).

The Negatives: None...every track on this record is very intelligent and enjoyable.

Personal Favorites: The Fight Song, Disposable Teens, The Death Song, The Nobodies, Lamb of God, The Love Song, Coma Black, and King Kill 33.

Marilyn Manson was a phenomenon to be reckoned with. Musically, Manson is inferior to other contemporaries of his day (ie, Nine Inch Nails); however, they were overshadowed by the fact that Manson was more than a band: it was a statement perfectly crafted for alienated teens. Manson gradually transformed from a band with a message to a lifestyle with its very own 'poster band'. Manson reached his musical zenith with 'Antichrist Superstar' (his best album), and then declined with 'Mechanical Animals'. 'Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death)', although better than 'Mechanical Animals', is still not Manson at his best. He seems to sacrifice the music for the concept behind the album. The album seems long drawn out, and some songs are extremely repetitive (ie, 'The Fight Song', 'Disposable Teens'). The best song on the album is probably 'Cruci-fiction in Space'.

Grofé is best known for his "Grand Canyon Suite," yet he has been otherwise underappreciated amidst the cacophony of supposedly more avant-garde composers of the 20th century. Yet his works are moving and, at least in my opinion, quintessentially American in both mood, temperament, and orchestration.

The three works presented here are beautiful compositions reflecting a variety of emotions and scenes. His works detailed images and visualizations unlike other composers. They can sadden, lighten, frighten and embolden the listener.

Although the Grand Canyon Suite may be the best introduction to Grofé, these three works, in particular, "Hudson River Suite," will provide a joyous celebration of imagery.

This is my first purchase of a Naxos Label "American Classic" and I am very pleased. The quality, performance and inexpensive price provide a great value. I am very impressed with William Stromberg and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Grofe is very underrated composer, maybe because he embraced melody and popularism when the rest of classical music was running the other way. (That and he is one of the few composers I know of who can make me laugh and surprise me consistently.)

The music speaks for itself. My favorite is the Death Valley Suite, especially the opening 5/4 movement that depicts perfectly the misery of crossing the desert under a murderous sun searching for water. (That and the arrow shot during the Indian raid- some of the cleverest orchestration I've heard in a while.)

I'd also advise you keep an eye out for a CD that features Grofe's Piano Concerto (recorded by a local orchestra- Albany? Buffalo? in New York)- it isn't a new recording, but is an impressive piece- one of the few works of Grofe I've heard that isn't imagistic.

Take my advice and order this. Anyone who loves Bernstein, Gershwin, Anderson or just wants a glimpse of 20th Century America should pick this up. You won't be disappointed.

These are splendid performances of three Ferde Grofe suites, one of them ("Hollywood Suite") a premiere recording. The liner notes tell us that the 1935/1938 "Hollywood" started life as a ballet, which would explain the uncharacteristically mundane movement titles ("The Stand-in," "Sweepers," etc.) from a composer who usually treats us to windstorms, scenic marvels, and loud historical happenings. This suite's music is marvelous, if blatantly Gershwinesque in more than a few spots, especially in "Carpenters and Electricians," which sounds more like "Triumphant Charge of the Combined Armies of 19th-Century Europe" than a soundtrack for on-set union activity. "Concerto in F" paraphrasings provide some break from the movement's relentless onslaught of... hammers? T-squares? Overwrought, perhaps, but who's complaining? In a lighter mode, "Production Number" uncannily presages modern attempts to recall the Broadway and Hollywood of days gone by, as if Grofe had anticipated cable-TV sound bytes in the days before television. The final movement is the epitome of a Grofe musical wrap-up, evocative of numerous story-lines wrapping up in quick fashion. Grofe's 1955 "Hudson River Suite," much more typical of the composer's later, streamlined, CinemaScope style, is musical enjoyment of the purest style--so much so, that I won't even mention the Track 7, 3:32 goof-up that someone ought to have noticed during playback, if not on the spot. The flattened third of the scale CAN sound good against the unflattened version of the same, but not here. Andre Kostelanetz made a nice recording of this circa 1956, but without the benefit of digital technology, a recording snidely dismissed by one critic of the time as being "of interest mainly for its special sound effects." This is light music, to be sure, but not lightweight, with the bouncy, minimalist "Rip Van Winkle" movement especially charming. "Winkle" moves seamlessly from a mood of free-spirited joy to murky mysterioso to creaky transfiguration to lively recapitulation, and without a break--nothing to snore at, here. Finally, the 1949 "Death Valley Suite" (the outside of the case says 1957!) is every bit as Death-Valleyesque as the 1955 recording by Grofe himself, with the Stephen Foster medley in "Desert Water Hole" brilliantly performed and just the greatest kind of musical fun. I won't complain about the ridiculous amplified-rattle effect in "Sand Storm," because this CD is too extraordinarily good to harp over. NAXOS and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra have given Grofe lovers a gift to treasure.

This welcome release is the second CD from Naxos featuring the orchestral music of Ferde Grofé (1899-1972), best known for a suite included on the first release -- "Grand Canyon Suite." This new CD is played by the same forces, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra conducted by the talented young American conductor, William T. Stromberg. They do a brilliant job.

The "Hollywood Suite," premiered in 1935, is for a ballet about a young woman, like many other anonymous women of that time, who had come to Hollywood to be a "star." Instead she is a bit-player There is an underlying melancholy in the music even in the ebullient, musically apt "Production Number," in which the stand-in dances for the star, while the star gets the close-ups. The bustle of the "Carpenters and Electricians" section is brilliantly orchestrated, no surprise since Grofé was primarily known -- aside from the "Grand Canyon Suite" -- for his orchestration of Gershwin's early orchestral works. The bustle in the orchestra reminds one of Gershwin's "American in Paris."

The "Hudson River Suite" was commissioned by Andre Kostelanetz in 1954 and incorporates a tone-poem, "Rip van Winkle," that Grofé wrote in 1932. "Rip" begins with Rip walking in the hills with his dog and, like Piston's "Incredible Flutist," includes a recording of a dog barking. When Rip wakes up after his twenty years' sleep and whistles for his dog, there is no response, a neat way to show that years have passed. Both "The River" and "Henry Hudson" have a broad, flowing, almost Elgarian nobilmente. It concludes with the frenetic activity of "New York!," ending the Hudson?s downstream course.

"Death Valley Suite," written for the 1949 celebration of California's centennial, is probably the most serious piece on the CD. It depicts a wagon train trying to cross California's Death Valley, its settlers almost dying of thirst; when they find a water hole there is jubilation and someone breaks out a fiddle and there is dancing to "O, Susanna." Later, the wagon train is engulfed in a fierce sand storm, but they manage to get through it to the promised land.

Grofé has pretty much fallen out of favor, although his music was immensely popular in the mid-20th century. It is due for rediscovery. This CD will help.

I am an avid listener of all things Celtic and would consider this to be one of the top Celtic albums and groups. Duggins has a powerful voice which I find easier to listen to than Flogging Molly. The music relys on powerful banjo and mandolin performances which helps steer them clear of obnoxious guitar riffs which can so often detract from a strong celtic group. The Tossers do a nice job of mixing American themes along with Irish themes and make sure you know that they are from Chicago. All in all the vocals are amazing and have you singing along from the first song to the last. The music makes you want to get up and stomp your feet along with it. What makes the album even better is if you have ever seen the Tossers perform live, then you realize just how much passion and energy they put into their music. I highly recommend this album for anyone who enjoys powerful celtic music.

I have been a fan of the dropkick murphys for many moons and also a fan of flogging molly. Though far more obscure the tossers are in the same leage as the previously mentioned bands. Though people say that they are irish punk i feel that they are realy closer to traditional irish music with a hint of punk influence. the resulting sound is astounding. this is the only tossers cd that i own but they are a new discovery for me and i plan on purchasing many more cds of theirs. i highly recomend this for anyone who likes irish music.

Inspired by bands like the Chieftains and Pogues in their Irish influenced folk/punk ways, we have the Tossers from Chi-town. As an avid fan of this genre I must say that the Tossers just keep getting better & better with each new album they put out. Their new album "The Valley of the Shadow of Death" blew me away the first time I heard it and still continues to do so. It's been two years since "Purgatory"(their last album) came out and I've been anxiously awaiting any new Tossers material. Unlike most bands of this genre that rely so much on traditional Irish tunes to carry most of their album, the Tossers possess tons of creativety when writing their own original lyrics. Lead singer and mandolin player, T. Duggins voice just matches the music so well, just check out the opening line in "Criminal of Me"-"My great, great, GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT Granda was a king!" and Becca's fiddle playin' sounds so superb, especially on the traditional "Preab San Ol"(translate "another round" of drinks) which opens up with 2 verses of Gaelic Irish, followed by 2 verses of English, but damn! This tune really jams out as it develops and now has become my favorite on the album. From the anthem like "No Loot, No Booze, No Fun" to the angst fury found on "I've Pursued Nothing" and to the inspirational "Crock of Gold"(would even make Shane MacGowan proud), there's not a bad track to be found on this album. They may not be as well known like other Irish influenced bands out there, but who cares! If they wanted Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys fans they could easily grab them. So without hesitation I can easily say this is the best Tossers album to date and the best Irish influenced album of 2005 and I highly recommend it!

After listening to the mandolin dominated Communication & Conviction, the Last Seven Years; the solid albums Purgatory and the Long Dim Road; and finally The Vally of the Shadow of Death, I can honestly say that this is the best Tossers album to date. The songs are well balanced and they have stayed true to the Irish/Punk roots that make their music work. I especially enjoy A Criminal of Me, The Crock of Gold, and the title track; but that is not to say there are any weak tracks on the album. If you're interested in hearing some Irish punk this would be a good place to start off, or perhaps listen to some of the Pogues, who started it all. If you've listened to some of the other Tossers albums and enjoyed them you'll surely enjoy this one as well. If you like some of the other bands out there like The Pogues, Flogging Molly, the Skels, and Blood or Whiskey, then you'll like these boys from Chicago too.

This is totally off-the-wall release for Victory, atleast in comparison to a lot of the crap they've been peddling to the mainstream which I suppose is the irony about Victory--they can release such brilliant records at times and release absolute garbage other times. In anycase, The Tossers basically don't fit into anything Victory currently puts out (or even in the past, that I can think of?) and while I'm not to awfully caught up on this style of music I suppose it's best described as an Irish influenced fusion of folk and punk--something like the Dropkick Murphys but with more of a focus on the irish and folk influences and just a dash of punk (basically you're not going to hear any fast 3 chord progressions here but it does have the attitude of a punk record). From a technical perspective, the music is written very well and it's catchy as hell. Their some tracks that are only 1:30 long and then others that clock in well over the 6:00 mark. The band is very talented at what they do, but even I'll admit this record isn't for everyone. The average listener of Victory's current roster will probably absolutely hate this. Listen before you buy. Highlight tracks include "Good Morning Da," "No Loot, No Booze, No Fun," and the title track.

    The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
    The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

    I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month!That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included,especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
    Though,there is a complain:i can't understand,why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song,the cues from the Bacchaen festival,music from Deja Vou All Over Again,where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest!That,i can't understand it!
    Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style,should buy this cd.
    Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes.It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song,will agree with me!Mmmm!

    To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

    The "Messiah" was composed by Handel at his London home in the late summer of 1741..Charles Jennens described his libretto for the 'Messiah' as a "Scripture Collection", because it consists of a cleverly-arranged selection of biblical texts. Musically speaking, the recitatives and arias are definately in a style derived from opera, supplemented by choruses of the type Handel has developed in his English odes and oratorios-the presentation of the story was unconventional. The work is divided into three acts or parts, but the narrative is largely confined to Part Two: Part One is mainly concerned with prophecy and its fullfilment and Part Three with commentary on the importance of the previous story. This recording of the famous 1992 performance at Dublin took place at the Point Theatre on the 250th anniversary of the work's premeire which took place in Dublin on April 13th 1742. It is an outstanding performance, especially chorally and instrumentally. The soloists: Sylvia McNair(soprano)-Anne Sofie von Otter(mezzo)-Michael Chance (alto) were superb!!! Personally I was not pleased by Jerry Hadley's interpretation of Handel; I have a recording of him singing show tunes, and I think he does that best! Robert Lloyd's (bass) diction was most peculiar and annoyed me. However, the last 2 comments may not be universally accepted. All in all, it's one of the best 'Messiahs' I have heard, and is actually my favorite of many that I own.

    While I haven't sampled that many different recordings of the Messiah, I really like this version. I sometimes find myself singing it, and this is the version I hear. One thing I don't like about it is that it is a 2-disc set, but the Messiah has three parts. Part II is divided -- the first half on disc 1 and the second part on disc 2. It would be nice if the parts weren't divided in the middle.

    This is my fifth Messiah disk and I had hoped my last. Von Otter is a real draw and she is truly great. Marriner's pacing is still good. But many aspects of this CD pull it down. I have a theory that the tenor (Jerry Hadley) was mad at Marriner and sang technically perfect with zero emotion. I don't how he was allowed to get away with this. I also did not like the baritone. While I think varying the size of the chorus in this piece has merit, this choir is generally on the small side and does not have the punch when needed. Messiah choirs carry a two edged burden, either the choir is large and it gets muddy in the delicate sections or it is small and can't punch the big sections. This disk errs on the small side. The recording quality is very good, something that dodges many Messiahs. The violins are too close to the soloist microphone (or poorly mixed) and come in much too loud. So whenever there is an sprite from the violins it jumps out at you and drowns the soloists.

    The best Messiah for me is still Marriner's 1976 disk, much better overall rendition.

    This is one of the better Messiahs, although not quite up to Westenberg's level.

    Its world-beater aspects include mezzo Anne-Sophie von Otter, whose "He was despised" is well north of magnificent: Warmly mournful in the slow sections, snarling and spitting in the center section.

    Trumpeter Mark Bennett does by far the best trumpeting on any of my 30 complete Messiahs. "Glory to God" and "Hallelujah" are as good as it gets -- no, better than any other recording gets.

    Countertenor Michael Chance is quite good in "If God be for us" -- I say that as someone who doesn't like countertenors.

    Some of the other choruses are also well done. But tenor Jerry Hadley seems to have thought he had more lucrative things to do with his time than to think about Messiah.

    5 out of 5 stars And He Shall Reign Forever and Ever, Amen........2002-01-01

    This recording ranks itself on the top of the greatest recordings of Handel's Messiah. Being a live recording, it surpasses every other studio recordings of this piece in terms of interpretation and drama. The soloists are superb, the chorus are crisp and vital, and the ensemble plays with great virtuoso. My special remark goes to Miss McNair, I simply cannot grow tired of her! Her lyrical voice is simply destined for this work, especially in aria no 16 `Rejoice greatly, o daughter of Zion' - rejoice indeed! It is to Marriner we should all be grateful for producing this remarkable recording in the first place. Known mainly for his stupendous recordings of Mozart, it is not surprising that he's able to interpret in a true Handelian way. It's a pity that he seldom records works by Handel - I don't know if he performs them unrecorded.
    There are actually two versions of this live performance, the one here and the other is available on LaserDisc. I believe that they were recorded on two different performance time, for on some arias the soloists have different style in singing the cadenza. Whichever you prefer, this is a recording you must simply own - even when your music library boasts a dozen or so of Handel's Messiah!!

    This is a terrific performance of Messiah. Not only are the soloists all superb, but Trevor Pinnock completely contradicts the image of many period instrument performances as small-scale, scrappy affairs. Indeed, he invests the choruses with as much genuine Handelian pomp as Beecham at his most extravagant. The trumpets really blaze, and the timpani thunder, and everyone simply has a great time.     Trevor Pinnock meets with mixed success in this account of the Messiah with the English Concert & Choir and soloists Arleen Auger, Anne Sofie von Otter, Michael Chance, Howard Crook, and John Tomlinson, recorded and released in 1988. Its strengths are the strengths of the early-music movement in general. The size and distribution of the instrumental and vocal forces are optimal, which means that textures are clear and balances apt. Rhythms are nicely pointed, though often, in Pinnock's case, not quite well enough sprung. Tempos are well chosen; for example, "All we like sheep"--which turns out to be one of the set's best numbers--is a real bourré, and Pinnock animates it in just the right way. But the performance often seems workmanlike and unemotional, weighed down in too many instances by the humdrum work of the chorus. The alto section in particular, which is half male and half female, sings timidly and is constantly swallowing its entrances. Bass soloist John Tomlinson is a further drag on the effort. He has the right idea--that there's an Italian opera hiding behind all this biblical imagery--but his cottony sound is out of place, a misguided attempt to mimic Nicolai Ghiaurov. His usable range is less than a tenth (he croaks the low G's and F-sharps), and his diction is horrible. "Thus spake the Lord" is strangled, and when, in "The trumpet shall sound" Tomlinson gets to the words "we shall be changed," one can't help wishing that he had been changed too, right before the sessions started. --Ted Libbey

    Handel's Messiah is my favorite piece of classical music. Of the two versions that I had I only have left this one, and it is not the best (the other had been a cheap recording whose author's name I forgot too). This version seems to lack a little enthusiasm from the voices; too melancholic. Anyway, this is the first review of any music that I write, and probably will be the last too, so I just want to leave my impression of how I feel when I hear these solemn and heavenly sounds. One feels so raised to the heavenlies... I can almost sense the presence of the Lord Almighty up yonder among the clouds, and me being carried in solemnity to meet Him. Far away are the buzzing sounds of earthly chores. The air is fresh and clean as we are raised above the valleys, and we come to meet God's elected amid the singing, stronger and stronger. Jubilant, bathed in the glorious rays of the Savior's Light, we come together and sing: Glory to God, glory to God, praise and glory for He is coming...

    This would be a great 21st Century Reader's Digest version of Messiah, if such a thing existed any more. Handel did as much as he could, but really, the performers still have to do something besides posture, which, by the way, seems to me to characterize many performances these days. Fashionable, but musically deficient.

    Specifically: John Tomlinson sings like he thinks he IS God, instead of singing about Him. Heavy, cumbersome, and overblown. May I add boorish?

    Arleen Auger has a very sweet voice. And??

    Despite the program notes insisting that certain segments of this Messiah are given to "the contralto", Anne Sofie von Otter is NOT a contralto. Not even close.

    The male alto can barely sustain a legato line - why he insists upon throwing in those complicated, badly-performed embellishments I can't figure. Well, I can, but I'd really rather not say.

    Wake up, choristers!! It's 'For Unto Us A Child Is Born," not "Oy, I have to go to the grocery store today."

    Boy do I regret having spent almost $40 on this one. Thank goodness I have the Colin Davis to console me.

    This 1988 recording sits between the euqally English, euqally period-ifnluenced Hogwood and Garidner. Of the three, Hogwood sounds more 'authentic' because it uses boys in the chorus and singers schooled period practice. By comparison, Pinnock's soprano, Arleen Auger, and mozeeo, Von Otter, are essentially modern singers--gorgeous ones, of course, Gardiner is far more anemic in his conducting and uses a scrwny-sounding orchestra, so if that's more authentic, so be it. Of the three, Pinnock gives us more traditional music values in his emotional expression and instrumental timbres.

    The competiiton is mushc stiffer now than in 1988, but Pinnock's reading has survived the test of time. He is not a genuinely inspired conductor--sadly, Messiah has become a cottage industry that excludes most big-name talents--but neither are Gardiner and Hogwood. (For sheer musicality, I tend to put my money on Andrew Parrott, Robert King, Marc Minkowski, Niklaus Harnoncourt, and Rene Jacobs.) But he's certainly good eough. The reason I haven't given five stars is that the male soloists aren't first-rate, and in particular the Wotan voice of John Tomlinson sounds cavernous in the bass arias. Add to that Pinnock's tendency toward tepidness, and what you end up with is a very good but not great performance.

    ... This Messiah has recently been re-released at a much cheaper price. Go back and look for the DG "The Originals" release, which is being sold new for under $12.

    Soy uno de los mas fanaticos seguidores de Handel y de su obra El Mesias... He escuchado muchas versiones de esta genial e impresionante obra del maestro Handel y, sencillamente no me queda mas que recomendar esta interpretacion, bajo la batuta del maestro Trevor Pinnock. Se nota la exigencia con que esta version se interpreto, dentro el contexto del arte barroco y la magnificencia de la pronunciacion del ingles de la epoca. La orquesta se luce impresionantemente desde la obertura... y le da a cada movimiento, toda aquella fuerza y a la vez delicadeza requerida en el sentimiento que aplica en cada uno de los textos biblicos escogidos por el guionista Jennens. El Coro del English Concert es arrebatador y demuestra maestria en la interpretacion de cada una de las arias que le corresponde. La soprano Arleen Auger, la puedo definir como un angel cantando y resulta ser una caricia a los oidos, a la vez que es capaz de arrancarle a uno las lagrimas por lo excelso de su magia interpretativa. El tenor Crook, aunque no es un tenor con tesitura para canto barroco, es realmente habil y agil al momento de interpretar los melismas caracteristicos de este brillante periodo musical. El contratenor Michael Chance, es fenomenal y quiera Dios que yo tenga el honor de conocer a este genio del canto: "But who may abide..." interpretado por Chance en esta version, es como para caer en extasis. La contralto Anne Sophie von Otter..., tiene una voz oscura y redondeada..., tambien resulta una caricia a los oidos y su "If God be for us..." es desbordante, capaz tambien de hacerle a uno derramar lagrimas por su belleza interpretativa. El bajo Tomlinson..., es barbaro!!! (Soy bajo-baritono en el Coro de la Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional de Costa Rica...) A pesar de su voz tan oscura, es tremendamente agil cuando le toca cantar los melismas y es genial al alcanzar la tonalidad brillante en las partes de notas altas y agudas...; por ejemplo: "The people that walked in darkness..." y "Why do the nations..." Tengo seis años de experiencia, interpretando musica coral y tengo que decir que espere esos seis años, desde 1999, para felizmente cantar esta obra "El Mesias". Ha sido fantastico finalmente lograr este objetivo..., la espera valio la pena y debo admitir que mi inspiracion ha sido sin duda alguna, la version que puede usted encontrar en este disco compacto. Doy gracias a todos los que intervinieron en esta grabacion (al maestro Trevor Pinnock, al English Concert and Choir y a los solistas ya mencionados), en nombre mio y en nombre del maestro Handel.

    Felix Slatkin's renditions of Ferde Grofe's "Grand Canyon" and "Mississippi" suites are good, though the spacious fidelity required for this music isn't here--even by 1956 standards, the acoustics are cramped. Contrast this with the big-sounding Andre Kostelanetz version from 1941 that was consistently reissued on Columbia for decades, from shellac to vinyl, and then from monaural to reprocessed stereo. (Why isn't this masterful performance on CD??) Otherwise, the scrunched dynamics and tape hiss are no worse than one would expect from the period--better, perhaps. Frankly, I didn't know that stereo existed in 1956, but apparently it did. Though it sounds a tad empty, this is authentic stereo.

    The real reason to buy this CD, however, is the Grofe-conducted "Death Valley Suite," which I happen to love in spite of its many faults, not the least of which is a joyous but corny Stephen Foster medley that abruptly pops out of the sand in "Desert Water Hole," the third movement. This is very 1939 in character, with the feel of a patriotic movie short, making it only slightly anachronistic for 1949, the year of the suite. The concluding "Sand Storm" plows along in triple-forte fashion with howling wind machines and a shameless indulgence in whole-tone modality, the storm ending with an augmented-triad overlap of woodwinds and strings. A lovely and richly-scored reprise of a second-movement theme brings this fun, if not awfully serious, work to an end. For a 1954 recording, "Death Valley" sounds very good, with less tape hiss and dynamic flattening-out than there could have been. Oh, and there's the fastest "Cloudburst" ever recorded, with Grofe again at the baton, as a bonus track. This is also from 1954. A very nice buy.
