Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great Buy.......2007-04-26

I agree with Mr. Pac Dan about some of the songs not being 12 inches, but still is a great buy, especially as a constant enjoyment reminder of the real essence of music and just havin' a phenomenally great/quality time whenever you heard these songs.

4 out of 5 stars Old School Jams, Vol. 3.......2006-12-21

It has taken me years to finally find a disk with the "Original" version of "The Show" with Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew. For those in the know, the part where Slick Rick says "Me-Shell, Ma-Bell...." was strangely edited out in every other version of the song that I've ever come across on Compact Disc. A special "Thank You" to whomever found the "Original" 12-inch version!

The rest of the disk isn't bad, either. But, for me, it's strictly "The Show!" Four stars!!

2 out of 5 stars If You're Not Concerned With Quality.........................2006-09-13

Then you will enjoy this CD otherwise it's a waste of money, mostly Vinyl records transferred to CD and poorly done at that. You can clearly hear vinyl noise and pops/crackles. There should be a law that CD's transfered from vinyl records should state so on the package. I wasted my money.

5 out of 5 stars The Word Is Out.......2006-07-17

I bought this CD for one song - "The Word Is Out" by Jermaine Stewart. I can't even tell you what is on the rest of the CD. I received it in a hurry, though, and I appreciate that. Thanks much, Angelia

4 out of 5 stars back to the old school.......2005-09-23

this is a nice collection of old school songs theres not one song I cant listen to.
I would recommened it for everybody who used to go clubbing back in the 80s..

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Totally appropriate mix.......2005-09-06

handing the mixing duties to grandmaster flash was a perfect idea -- each of these tracks were well chosen, and he handles the mixing duties perfectly.

the other folks that have gone on about the mixes trimming the tracks down miss the point of this disc -- it's a dj mix, not a compilation. he does a great job of mixing these tracks as they would have been during the time of their release... it's not crazy remixed a la the skratch piklz, but rather a simple 2 turntable mix that lets the vocals breathe.

listening to this makes me feel like i just found an old c60 from back in the day.

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Those Who Love Old School.......2003-07-09

I am very disappointed in the prior Amazon reviews which gave this album poor ratings. I found the album to be a great compilation of old school rap. I consider myself to be an old school fan with knowledge in the field, and of all the music I have listened to this album is a perfect assembly of the greatest jams from the eighties. Grandmaster Flash's mixes are flawless; he combines the beats in perfect proportion. I give it 5 stars and two thumbs up!

1 out of 5 stars What a Waste of Time & Money--Major Disappointment.......2003-02-26

I purchased the 4-CD Box Set of this collection, but regarding disc 3, I was disappointed beyond words. Yet, I'll try to express myself in this review. It's really very simple. I'm quite sure most people buying this CD are interested in listening to these classic, old school rap songs. Instead, you get Grandmaster Flash basically mixing & scratching every single song at the beginning, and cutting the length of each song from the beginning to the end!! I can't believe that the label who put this out (THUMP) felt the target audience would be interested in hearing a mix sesssion that sounds like it was done by ME in my bedroom when I was 12 years old. People want to hear these songs in an uncut, original capacity, not sounding like they've been transfered from a Saturday night rap-oriented radio mixshow. This is absolutely terrible!!!

4 out of 5 stars Quality Selection.......2002-12-23

Perhaps this collection of Old Skool classics disappoints some because the originals were not included in their entirety. However, they were chosen and mixed by Grandmaster Flash, which in itself is an historical blessing, as his professional ear really lends a special touch to the mix.

The songs featured here are real classics, covering such perspectives as: educational (KRS-One with Boogie Down Productions), beat box (Doug E Fresh and Slick Rick), female (Roxanne Shante), pop (Young MC, Tone Loc), and just straight-up founders (Eric B and Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Ice-T, DJ Quik, etc.). The songs featured on this album are clear influences on just about everything that came out after them.

The only song I personally don't like is "Request Line," but I'm obviously in the minority as Missy Elliot uses the opening sample on her most recent album.

In addition to the music, the CD comes with a textured cover--> in the picture on this website, the photo of Grandmaster Flash is fuzzy. But when you buy the CD, as you move the cover back and forth, it looks like he's scratching the vinyl while bopping his head to the music. Kick ass!

1 out of 5 stars Classic songs treated with very little respect.......2002-09-16

I was really looking foward to getting this CD soley for Slick Rick & Doug E Fresh's "La Di Da Di",undeniably one of the greatest hip-hop songs ever written. As I listened,I was horrified to realise that "La Di Da Di" was cut down from it's original length to just 2 minutes 54 seconds.Ricky D's entire spoken word intro was cut out and, even worse, the entire second half of the song with the Biggie Smalls sampled 'Hypnotise' verse was cut!On this CD,the song ends with Rick saying;"If I can't have you,she can't neither".Which is disgraceful. That's nowhere near the end of the song.
I was very disappointed with this album.Almost all of the other songs were cut short from their original length too. What is the point in compiling a collection of old skool classics if they're not going to be played in their entirety?
For some inexplicable reason,Eric B & Rakim's "My Melody" is shortened too and is really speeded up.Rakim sounds like he's inhaled helium.Don't waste your money on this CD...

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Funkmaster Flex's worst Volume.......2003-05-01

Funkmaster Flex has had the reputation of laying down some banging beats for hip hop's top stars to freestyle over. But on Vol. 3 there's not enough good beats or good songs to make this album satifying. There are lots of missteps on here, Mariah Carey over Mobb Deep's Shook Ones Pt. 2 beat, Missy Elliot's freestyle over Wu-Tang's Triumph completely ruins the beat, DMX's freestyle ruins the Give up the Goods beat by Mobb Deep. Ice Cube doesn't even drop a verse on the Mack 10 freestyle, he just talks in the beginning of the freestyle. Funkmaster Flex gathered all of these big hip hop stars and didn't milk them for his worth, he also cuts [bad] hip hop and r&b songs together in between. Get Vol. 2 or Vol. 1, they have much better beats and more satifying performances by various rappers.

5 out of 5 stars There is nothing Better!!.......2003-03-11

WOW! I just finished listing to 60 minutes of funk Vol. 3. This is by far one of the best DJ albums of history. It has everyone that you can think of. From Ice Cube all the way to Jay Z and everyone in between. Most of the beats are from previopu songs but are the best. This album definetly shows this is Funik Flex's best CD ever!

4 out of 5 stars My 'white honkey' view.......2001-02-27

this is some good hip hop the DMX song was hot but i'd have to say the terror squad cuts over xzibits 'at the speed of life was a bangin tune

4 out of 5 stars PICK IT UP.......2000-06-11

This is a good cd. Although it doesn't rank up with some of the other funkmaster flex projects in the past, it is a very good compilation. This project blends excellent freestyles with an amazing variety of beautifully laced beats. There's no doubt that this is a well put together lp that is well worth the flex stamp of approval.

More ass-shaking artifacts from the early-'80s dawn of electro, hip-hop, and freestyle. This might be the least distinct disc in the set, but in such great company, that's hardly a put-down. Of all the volumes, number 3 hews closest to the strictures of the compilation's subtitle, "New York Electro Hip-Hop + Underground Dance Classics, 1980-1985," though Heaven 17's "Let Me Go" came out of England and was in no sense underground. The excellent liner notes by Brian Chin don't mention it, but this also seems to be the diva disc of the bunch, with high-volume output from Shannon, Tina B, Carol Lynn Townes, Alisha, Seidah Garrett, and Xena (no, not that one!). --John Sanchez

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic collection.......2005-10-15

Volume 3 is part of a 4 CD collection put together by a subsiduary of Tommy Boy records. The four CDs are so awesome that they made up the sounds that myself and my colleagues listened to along with The Freestylers FSUK mix album and We Rock Hard when we launched and PR'ed a raft of dot.bombs in London.

    4 out of 5 stars Fresh.......2004-09-06

Spanning from 1980-1985 the releases on this compilation offer some of the best kept secrets of 80's dance/hip hop and freestyle.

Featuring Siedah Garrett's "Do you want it right now"? .Garrett was known for her work with Dennis Edwards, Quincy Jones, and Michael Jackson. This will be a pleasant suprise to catch her earlier work. The song is a great example of early 80's dance beats with a great vocalist.

Another suprise is Xena's "On the upside". Xena is actually grammy award winning vocalist Lisa Fischer who also is best known as a back up vocalist to Luther Vandross.

Other standouts are Shannon's addictive "Give me tonight", Carol Lynn Towne's "99 1/2" and Tina B.'S "Honey to a bee"

The other standout is the dance floor classic "Din Daa Daa" by producer George Kranz. The song also known as "The ha" by some of the younger generation is still popular and can be found in heavy rotation on remix cds and even clubs. Made popular by a dance scene in the movie "Breakin' 2:Electric Boogaloo" it has aged well.

Any fan of this genre will find an embarrasment of riches as the unknown songs are the just as good as the hits. Just imagine driving through the city at midnight or at the club jamming and dancing until the wee hours of the morning. This disc will take u back to that time or will make u wish u were alive to enjoy it!

4 out of 5 stars 7 hot hip hop tracks and some filler -- wrong track listing though!!.......2005-07-15

"Diggin 3" has two track titles wrong, though. Wrong artists, wrong title -- wrong song altogether. The selection of tracks itself is acceptable, but it seems that the person doing the track listing -- I picture a non-hip hop graphic artist or a record label intern -- didn't know the songs and apparently tried to logically deduce which songs they were.

Track 7 is listed as "Rockin' It" by the Fearless Four. This is actually "The New Rap Language" by The Treacherous Three. However, the Treacherous Three say the word "rock" a ridiculous amount of times on this song. Plus, the Treacherous Three was named after it's original three members, but by the time they recorded "The New Rap Language" they actually had four members, having added the young Kool Moe Dee, easily recognizable on this track because it is the best early showcase of his innovative "speed rap" that I know of.

Track 10 is listed as "Superrappin'" by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five. This is actually another 1979 track of epic length by the Funky 4 + 1 -- "Rappin' And Rockin' The House." The track lister deserves a major gas face on this one -- The Furious 5 never had a woman, as in Sha Rock, who was the "plus one" of the Funky 4 + 1.

If anyone else has this CD and is looking for the correct tracks and years -- unlisted on the CD insert, which is not surprising if "Hot Productions" didn't get the track names right -- here it is. Source of years is my own research, some more reliable than others.

*"Double Dutch Bus" by Frankie Smith (1981)
*"Boogie Down Bronx" by JVC Force (1988)
"Set It Out" by Midway (1984)
"Bass Drum Ma Bass Drum" by George Kranz (1985)
"Eat Em' Up (Yum Yum)" by Beat Box Boys (1984)
*"Feel The Heart Beat" by The Treacherous Three (1981)
*"The New Rap Language" by The Treacherous Three (1980)
*"Just Having Fun" by Doug E. Fresh (1984)
*"Spoonin' Rap" by Spoonie Gee (1980)
*"Rapping And Rocking The House" by Funky 4 + 1 (1979)
"Bubble Gum (I Chewz You)" by Captain Sky (1980)
"Johnson Pumpkin" by Johnson Products (?)

    * = the hot tracks

The Captain Sky song is kind of funny as well, as he milks the gum metaphor for all it's worth.
