NPR gives "moments" period.......2005-07-20

I cannot write enough to praise the radio essays that have been broadcast regularly on NPR. I've been a fan for the past four or five years. So, I not only have "driveway" moments, but "parking lot" moments, "at home after work" moments; you name it. If NPR is on my radio, I literally find I cannot leave my car.

My only regret was the CD didn't contain the complete broadcast of the amusing "Santaland Diaries."

There is no other radio station that has better programming than NPR. The creativity, humour and complexity of their stories gives them a head up on all other media outlets. This CD is poignant, funny and interesting. The stories really do hold you in the car and in your driveway. There were times where we had to pullover because the story was so funny. In other situations there was not a dry eye in the car. I highly reccomend this CD. Although, "Driveway Moments 2" 2005 is not nearly as good. In fact I was completley dissapointed in the sequal.

This CD is a wonderfully eclectic collection of some of the best stories of NPR. A "driveway moment" is when there is something so compelling on the radio that you sit in your driveway, listening, rather than leave the car.

That's exactly what happened to me when I heard "My So-Called Lungs." It's indescribably touching, and I was left with tears streaming down my face, in awe of how the young girl making this audio diary could be so brave.

The stories span an almost unbelievable arc of emotion, from the drama of the story I just mentioned, to David Sedaris's Santaland Diaries, which is so hilarious that it's commonly played every Christmas on NPR stations across the country.

This is a suberb CD. Listen to it on a long road trip, and I guarantee the miles will just fly by, you'll be so absorbed in these stories. I have just ordered Driveway Moments 2--if it's half as good as this one, it'll be well worth it.

On her fifth album, Werner spills out trademark jazzy vocal stylings, pleasant acoustic ballads, a few Bangles-esque rockers, and plenty of word-riffing. This time around, however, she runs a bit short on memorable material. "Barbed Wire Boys" may be her best song about her native Midwest, and the conversation with dueling angels in "Misery & Happiness" has a clever charm. More typical though is the personal-ad whining of "All of the Above" or the pining for a big car in, yes, "Big Car." In these songs, the pronoun "you" runs amok, "only love can live forever after," and spiritual hope seems as thin and predictable as chicken soup for the soul. Werner may think dark days are redeemed by cloying images like stars, smiles, and a baby's hands, but wordiness without fresh ideas or real emotions isn't. --Roy Kasten

Frankly, I am puzzled by the editorial review. We obviously were not listening to the same music. Though maybe it is simply the reviewer's lack of depth or jaundiced view towards life in general...

Susan Werner's melodies and lyrics touch my soul (and my funny bone...)in places most music can't even reach. And - what on EARTH is wrong with thinking life is good even when there are times when it really sucks??? The reviewer must not be much fun to play with...

Susan is top-notch! Her voice invades your being and lifts your heart - makes you think and often makes you laugh. Her incredible voice and powerful lyrics blend into an experience you will not soon forget. From the first song to the last you will be entranced by the spell she weaves. Don't miss this one. You will never be the same. Check out her tour schedule and if you are lucky you can see her in person if she's in your area.

Don't worry, Susan! Thre are plenty of us who get it.

Susan Werner is Not a Trained Monkey.......2002-09-17

I, like many other reviewers, discovered Susan Werner by hearing her perform live, over and over during the last 10 years. I've seen her in Washington, D.C., Virginia, San Diego and Las Vegas. I have all of her CDs, and I recognize many of my own feelings about Susan's accomplishments and talents among the passionate comments submitted by other people here. I like all of her CDs, but mostly because they are my only connection to a treasured experience: the experience of seeing her sing her own songs live. But I have never loved any of the CDs, until New Nonfiction. The early ones seemed somewhat amateurish in their production values, but hey, they came from the very beginning of her career when she was performing in very small clubs, so what should we really expect? I still listen to them all the time, because they remind me of her concerts. The middle ones, especially Last of the Good Straight Girls and Time Between Trains, are more professionally produced, contain great Susan Werner songs and also covers that are perfect for her, but somehow, the production still lacks, because (as many people already said), it somehow polishes her too much and fails to capture what is magical about her voice and her performances. In my opinion, this new CD completely overcomes those problems. The sound of this CD is the thing that people love about Susan Werner; at least it's what I love. It sounds like her in concert; her beautiful and intelligent voice is all there and nothing about the production interferes with it. I can imagine the facial expressions she makes when she sings in concert, and hear the whole enormous range of her singing and playing talents. The words she writes have always been intelligent and clever, but with experience, they are becoming more routinely beautiful, without becoming overserious. This is, after all, pop music. I love this CD. What are these people talking about who say she is leaving her fans behind? Susan Werner has never been a particular kind of writer or performer; she always has sampled from every branch of popular music to ornament the words to her songs. Her songbook includes everything from a beautiful cover of Edith Piaf's La Vie en Rose, which is a perfect vessel for her voice (may she never stop performing it!), to blues, jazz, pop, country etc. Whoever diminished this CD as a surrender to country music doesn't understand music very well, other than as wallpaper. Country music is just one of the many forms of popular music. There is a great deal of dreadful country music, but there's also Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakum, Hank Williams, Jimmie Rogers, Bill Monroe. And by the way, those reviewers are just dead wrong: this is not a country album by any stretch of the imagination. There are maybe two songs that use the musical idioms of country, but that's exactly the point: Susan is incorporating the idioms of country music into her songs; she is not becoming a country singer. There's a big difference. I attribute these comments to people who must want Susan Werner to stay a certain way, always to sound a certain way, to write a certain kind of songs and keep turning them out, as if they have some ownership stake in that future stream of music. But what real music lover could expect that of an artist? What artist could really want to do it? What artist with real talent could stand to standardize her sound? It would be stultifying; her music would rot on the vine. Thank God Susan Werner is willing to grow. I could be wrong, but her recent albums, distributed by major labels, seemed to me as close as she could get herself to "gussying up" her sound to satisfy somebody else's expectations. In contrast, New Nonfiction has no gloss; it is all the things that are great about her art: she is (judging from her songs)funny, highly intelligent, disappointed in life and still immensely hopeful about it, romantic, cynical, sarcastic, gentle, a lover of family and children, a city person who loves rural life and tradition (as a place to come from), etc. That's just a beginning. I don't want Susan Werner to sound a certain way and stay in a certain genre, and I don't think anybody who really loves music as art could want her to do so. She is not a trained monkey. It must be discouraging for someone like her to hear a self-described "fan" say that she has sold out her art to "country." Two of these people actually said here that they regretted buying the new CD and would like to have the money back. That kind of "we're going to take our marbles home" speaks for itself. These aren't fans; they're taskmasters, they have expectations to be met. What I expect is that Susan Werner continues to write songs that are poetry, that she cares about, that they get better and better, and that she keeps moving into new musical territory, pushing me along with her to relish the experience. They won't all be perfect, and I'm sure I won't like some of them. But most of them will be like New Nonfiction: great. I give it four stars only because it's not her masterpiece. I'm sure that's still coming out.

This new CD is certainly not what you expect from Susan Werner. Most of the songs are country or even gospel sounding and even these are pretty lame by her usual brilliant standards. There are a couple good cuts on this CD like "Stationary" or "Epilogue: May I suggest" but most are truly awful. Her cover of the famous Midnight Cowboy movie song "Everybody's Talkin'" has to be the worst song ever recorded. What were you thinking, Susan! Susan Werner is a great artist and this release is way beneath her talent. If she wants to move in a country direction, that's OK but she will be leaving a great number of her fans behind, including me. Based on this CD, I will not buy her next one and that is sad since I own the previous four she made. I'm sorry I spent the money on this one.

Misfire from one of my favorite performers.......2002-03-23

Susan's great especially when you see her live but this CD is by far her worst effort to date. Where are all the great songs she has been performing all these past years live go? And where did this country side of hers come from? Has she been living in Nashville? Two of the songs save this review from being a total bomb, Stationary and Shade of Grey, but the rest are dismal and something you would hear at amateur night at the Big Boots Bar. I'm not sure long time fans will like this disc. It all sounds rushed and put together by people who really didn't know Susan's music and are trying to cram her into a Martina McBride/Faith Hill kind of category. If this is the direction she wants to head in that's fine but she's leaving me and many people who love her music very disappointed. I wish I could get my money back for this CD and maybe I'll sell my copy on ebay. Better luck next time Suze!

HMMMMM, I DON'T KNOW.......2007-01-24

now for me, i did not enjoy this one as much as the first one. everytime i hear this, i think of JINGLE JANGLE. it's like it's a cool vibe, but iu just don't dig it as much. it's not bad, but it's not good. now AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL is a wonderful first song. i can without NORTHSOUTHEASTWEST. WE BOYS with that group, leigon, was alright. other than that, listening to this makes me yearn for A WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING. still, i'd rather listen to this than unk or young joc or rick ross anyday. again, i guess i'm just an old-fashioned cat.

A great second coming from the classic group.......2005-05-07

The second album from the real hip hop representers, this was tight but didnt get as known as the first as there was so many things out in 94 and people just slept on it. The beats are nice and its just off being as much of a classic as their first. Dres has some good rhymes put down again and it stays in the black sheep flavour. Its a shame they were over didn't do any more after this and dres' solo was a bit weak with only a couple of good tracks but nothing like the black sheep albums. Make sure you get this, classic from an original hip hop group. Later!

badly. Well it took me this long to realise this record existed. Laid back beats, MCs flowing on verse after verse. I didn't like their debut -- too goofball, but this is highly reccomended for all 'real' hip-hop fans.

The best Native Tongue you've never heard!.......2002-11-21

Black Sheep aren't the best known or most popular of the Native Tongue family, but no one can deny that they left their mark on hip-hop. What suprises me is that lots of people who are down with Native Tongue have never heard of this album. The beats, the rhymes, everything about this album is tight. It can hold its own with Low End Theory, Buhloone Mindstate, or any other Native Tongue classic. Check this CD out! There isn't a track on it that's missable. If you like Black Sheep or any of the other members of the Native Tongue family then you have to own this CD. You don't know what you're missing!

This peculiar, rather warped feature is a product of the highly original mind of the late "musician-thinker" Sun Ra (the former Herman "Sonny" Blount, an accomplished jazz pianist and bandleader). The 82-minute, 1974 film melds effects that are straight out of '50s Japanese sci-fi, politics reflecting '60s racial radicalism, and the overall vibe of '70s blaxploitation films, with some African-Egyptian mythology thrown in for good measure. It isn't exactly a masterpiece of cinema; the production values are mediocre, the story is thin (Ra, who co-wrote, portrays an alien who offers oppressed African Americans the opportunity to seek their "alter-destiny" in outer space; complications ensue before his spaceship departs with true believers on board), the acting amateurish. But it's entertaining--Ra's array of costumes (especially his headgear) is impressive, and we do at least get a taste of his Intergalactic Solar Arkestra's heady brew of avant-garde jazz. --Sam Graham

DESCRIPTION:Science fiction, blaxploitation, cosmic free-jazz and radical race politics combine when Sun Ra returns to earth in his music-powered space ship to battle for the future of the black race and offer an "alter-destiny" to those who would join him. Intentionally created as an homage to the low-budget science fiction films of the 50's and 60's, SPACE IS THE PLACE became a visual embodiment of Sun Ra's Afro-Egyptian myth of salvation in outer space. The special effects, outrageous plot line and apocalyptic message harmonize with the otherworldly score and a climactic live performance by one of the most innovative and profound groups in jazz history. After having traveled through space in a yellow spaceship propelled by music, Sun Ra finds a planet he believes could serve as a new home for the black race. Returning to earth, he lands in Oakland, California circa 1972 and has to battle The Overseer, played by Ray Johnson (from 1971's DIRTY HARRY), a supernatural villain exploiting the black people. The Overseer, the FBI, and NASA -- who are after Ra's Black Space Program -- attempt to assassinate Ra, who escapes into space with his followers before the destruction of Earth. Cosmic blaxploitation cum sociological critique, SPACE IS THE PLACE defies categorization. It is at once a platform for Sun Ra's radical racial philosophies, an indictment of the government's policies in Vietnam-era U.S., cult camp flick, sci-fi movie and concert film with unforgettable performances by the Intergalactic Solar Arkestra. Since its extremely limited release in 1974 -- the film played very briefly in San Francisco and New York -- SPACE IS THE PLACE has become an underground legend spoken about but never seen, and if so, in poorly dubbed bootlegs or in the severely adulterated 1992 VHS version.

Space is Not the place.......2007-07-21

Appropriately named a blaxploitation film, Space is the Place does more harm than good in promoting "blackness", in spite of its attempts to weave in sophisticated technological and mythic themes. It is an arduous task finding positive representations and ideas amidst the white noise of drugs, bitches, pimps, and, well, noise. Ironically, part of the process is not understanding, as finally clarified in Sun Ra's concert approaching the end of the film.

The good versus evil, religious, and Egyptian themes are relatively transparent, and the exclusive application to blacks (though strangely only to American blacks), is a reaction to the same monopolization on the part of whites. There is a mythical garden, an Eden-like place, an ark in the form of a space ship, and immortality in space/heaven, all reserved for blacks. Rather than promoting equality and peaceful coexistence, the message is one of segregation and near mutual annihilation. This could be because the divide between blacks and whites seems wide and hopelessly irreparable, or because blacks themselves are unable to rise up out of their oppressed state without outside or divine assistance. In all these cases thus far, the militant pro-black attitude actually agrees a great deal with white racism, promoting segregation and stating that blacks bear a great responsibility for their own plight, and cannot get their acts together.

This negative presentation of disenfranchised groups continues in the hyper-sexualization of black women (and white women), seen in the whores, stories of abused women, told by their men and pimps, nurses, and numerous silent women riding in cars. Another notable phenomenon is the use of exploiting women to elevate one's status, especially if the woman is white. This implies not only that the assignment of female is even more subjugating than blackness, and that white women are a greater prize than black ones: the overseer's choice woman is white, and he first shows sexual interest in the white nurse, who happens to bring her black friend. Lines like "...do what your daddy says, and everything will be fine--it's better than shooting up on the stoop, isn't it?" both deprive women of the ability to make choices, and imply their predisposition to drugs and catering to their carnal instincts; this resembles the antiquated, racist, white perceptions of blacks, this time transferred to women. The line spoken by the pimp, who defends the fact that he beat his woman to the point of hospitalization, says "bitches need it". Somehow this man receives salvation in the end, but why, we never know.

The alternating predatory or impotent black male persists throughout Space is the Place. The best example of this is in the devil-like Overseer, and his pathetic (half-white?) assistant. It could be, however, that the impotent part of him comes from that inner whiteness in his personality, since the two NASA men are unable to perform in the same brothel on the same day.

The concert is the moment where Sun Ra explains his philosophy. Throughout the film, he establishes music as a balancing, mathematical, sophisticated force that can power anything from spaceships to an entire race. It can cause chaos, revolution, and salvation, so the fact that Sun Ra uses his unusual form of jazz to spread his message is expected. He asks, at the end of the film, for blind trust, for understanding that blacks are "the pattern and spirit of man", he asks them to not be afraid and to embrace their ignorance as their salvation. It is an ambiguous ending resulting in the salvation of whores, teenage hoodlums who save Sun Ra from the NASA men, a pimp who abuses women, and the black half of Jimmy Fey, helper of the Overseer.

If nothing else, this film may be good for a laugh as some charmingly dated things can be, but whether in its own context of the time or now, it is offensive to the mind and ear. Best seen with a group of drunk friends, I would imagine.

pretty good.......2006-03-31

this film is pretty nice but not nearly as great as the documentary A Joyful Noise. I highly recommend purchasing A Joyful Noise first because it provides a deeper look into Sun Ra.

More Archetypal Than Archestral.......2005-05-25

I picked up this curious period piece of psychedelic, indie-fueled moviemaking some time ago. Sorry now I waited so long to view it. It's a delightful combination of '70's pop culture, science fiction fantasy, Sun Ra musical storytelling through his Inter-Galactical Outer Space Archestra, and black pride allegory that manages to be quite on point.

Initially, I was too fascinated by the imagery and music to think much about any message. In retrospect, Sun Ra is a spiritual being from a space colony playing chess with an earthly demonic pimpmaster for big stakes: the souls of exploited people, black (mostly) and white. The pimpmaster also plays the system, selling his black brothers and sisters to addiction and prostitution for his own pleasure, trapping them in an oppressive, seemingly inescapable existence. A third main character is the media commentator--Jimmy Fay--who seems to be a shill for the pimpmaster and his worldly culture but eventually comes around (perhaps more John the Baptist than Jesus Christ) to sharing the enlightened message of Sun Ra, joining those who are delivered from bondage. All ends happily in a Sun Ra space colony of resurrected, reborn black/white humanity.

Even if you don't buy the Biblical allegory, it's still a cool trip, with a bit of harmless nudity and violence for good measure (just like Cecil De Mille).

What a bizarre delight!.......2004-10-07

What a simultaneously hysterical with fits of lucidity presentation! The running battle between Ra and "Overseer" is a great subtext. Gives some insights into the man, somewhat in spite of Sun Ra's best efforts to stay a "Mystery". The cheesey effects and over the top acting has to be viewed as an ultimate camp cult movie. A JOYFUL NOISE is almost as bizarre, but probably more accessible. Most of the charm is that you can't tell whether he is plain nuts or goofing with you. I understand this was very calculated and intentional on his part.

Parliament/Funkadelic owe more to this guy than I think anybody realizes. I don't know if George Clinton has ever acknowledged his debt to Sun Ra, at least conceptually, for doing the full blown conceptual thing decades before him.

What a great super-fly atmosphere, Oakland in the early 70s.
Ra has some great parts, and as always the music is tops.

I'm a big N7 fan, but this CD was recorded at a time before they adopted their signature mind-blowing instrumental sound. This album is just another acapella album. Look for their "What is it?" or "Ready II Fly" albums if you want to hear something truly amazing.

I'm a big Take 6 fan so I have pretty sharp ears for that kind of sound. It's difficult to compare any other group with Take 6 because they're in a class by themself. However, Naturally Seven has done pretty well with their sound. 7 guys, tight harmony, rich sound...definitely a CD you can listen to.

Wow, what a great album this is. Naturally Seven has put together a collection of amazingly smooth and tight sounding music that most everyone should hear. In case you missed it, Naturally Seven is the group that won the 1999 Harmony Sweepstakes in convincing fashion. This album is a product of that remarkable group of men made not long afterwards, hot off their win. This album is full of R&B heavy jazz songs and snippets. Snippets? Yes... such as the radio tag that N7 recorded for WDRG-AM in New York. That alone is a huge example of the tight, professional sound that these guys have. They also made a cute (and impressive) answering machine outgoing message. Or there is a little bit called Y'all Hear Dat as an intro for the next song (Train) that is full of atmosphere and style, as they imitate a train and a storyteller starts talking about "The Train". Doesn't sound like much with me trying to describe it, but believe me, it fits into the whole concept of this album being more of a story and a personal expression of what they do... and what they are. THE BEST OUT THERE!!!!.......2002-02-13

These guys performed at my high school on Feb. 12, 2002 and I have NEVER been so impressed at a concert. They ripped up our school, and that is pretty hard since we are a catholic school nobody really wants to listen to GOSPEL music when we don't have to. I bought the CD right when I got home off the internet and I have never been more happy to spend [the] $. These guys kick butt! Not to mention Jamal is dead sexy, but that's another story...

Naturally Blessed.......2001-02-12

I was fortunate enough to hear them perform live at my school (Pace Univ) on February 3, 2001 and they were awesome. They are so talented and they can sing any type of music. This is one of the few groups where each person posseses some type of talent. Unfortunately when they were there I didn't have any money to buy the CD but the day after I purchased it online and I received it a few days later and it was just as awesome as the live performance. This is something to be picked up.

Mausberg comes nothing short of bumpin' on his only solo album. Unfortunately he did not live to see it be released, being killed in Compton months before its release. Just about all the beats (many courtesy of the funky dope brotha Q.U.I.K) on this album slam. His beats are the ones that remind you of what made you fall in love with that West Coast G-Funk years before! His album is fun, naughty, deep, hard core, and playerish all rolled into one. In fact, this album is one of the best albums to come out of Quik's camp. Excellent production, awesome rhymes from the Realest himself really help put the West back on the map for the new millenium. Most of his guests are from Quik's camp of course: AMG, 220, Quik, Playa Hamm, Suga Free, and so forth. Make sure not to sleep on this classic!!!

Mr. Mausberg, the 21 year old from Compton, delivered a great debut, a classic backed by DJ quik's prduction (on 10 songs - 5 songs by Sacc's) and cameo's by Quik's crew and a few others. His flow fits great over the super funky beats that he gets laced with. Has 2 songs that I skip but a number of high quality songs and about 4 classic tracks on here as well, this cd is a must have for rap fans, especially fans of the west coast rap.

THIS CD IS TIGHT FROM THE BEGINNING SONG NONFICTION TO THE LAST SONG. MAUSBERG AND D.J. QUIK (ALSO FROM BOMPTON) WERE A TIGHT DUO SORTA OF LIKE KOBE AND SHAQ MINUS THE JEALOUSY. I RECOMMEND THIS CD FOR ANYBODY INTO REAL RAP BECAUSE ITS SOMETHING YOU CAN BUMP IN YOUR RIDE AND GET THE HEADS BOBBING.

Mausberg's album Non-Fic and Quik's album Balance and Options were the best two albumz on the street in 2000. If Mausberg was still alive he would've brought the West Caost bakk to life kuz rite now we need a hard hitter. All the songz on Mausberg'z Cd were hard as hell "Ring King", "Get Nekkid", "No More Question'z", "Mushroomz",and "Tha Truth Iz" prove my point. Bottom line iz Mausberg iz still "Tha Realest" by far. Everybody needz to rekognize it.

Grammy nominee Zak Morgan joins Thaddeus Rex on "You Can Tell a Boy by the Smell, contributing an assortment of character voices. WE WANNA ROCK also includes Slimy Green & Kind of Funny, whose lyrics were co-written by fifth-grader Lauren Walton. Now a professional songwriter with royalty checks to prove it, Lauren was the inspiration for the Thaddeus Rex Writing Contest, which Thaddeus describes as creative writing meets American Idol. Beginning in early November 2006, with a kick-off sponsored by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Education Department, Thaddeus Rex s website will include an area where schoolchildren will be invited to post their poems and stories and vote for their favorites. Each week s winner will continue to the semi-finalist round, and at the end of the school year voters will choose 10 finalists. A final round of voting will determine the grand prize winner, who will help Thaddeus Rex turn the winning entry into a song for his next CD. As a professional songwriter, the winning child will receive co-writing credit and co-copyright ownership of the song and will earn royalties each time the song is played on the radio, downloaded, or purchased on a CD. My kids ages 3 and 5 are T.Rex groupies! They love both his CDs!! Even better is that it is fun and upbeat music for the adults as well. I highly recommend this CD as well as his original CD.
