A classic underground release. If you like indy hiphop then you should pick up this album today. These two guys can really flow, especially when they are together. Rare album, so the asking price might be a little high. I would pay a maximum of $75 for this CD considering how well it was put together. I have had this CD for a while, I really can't remember how I found it but if you see anyo ther releases by Binary Star you should pick em up. These guys are very rare and I am still looking for WaterWorld I & II. I know alot about hiphop/rap and the underground and these guys are at the top of my list.

5 out of 5 stars Bought this Album 7 years ago.......2007-04-24

I knew there was a difference between hip "pop" and hip "hop" but could never touch it, grasp it and feel it until this album.

This was part of my education of hip-hop seven years ago, where curriculum included MCs verbalizing an underground movement that to me seemed un-tangible. Before hearing this album, I'd been a big fan of Arsonists, Eminem (when he still battled), Tribe Called Quest, Atmosphere, Common, Sage Francis, Zion I and Unknown Prophets. I heard the difference in their music, there was something about how they crafted rhymes out of ideas, how they defiantly refused the mainstream, corporate-run, watered-down music I heard on MTV. They provided a freshness of ideas to hip hop and put hip hop on a different stage, a stage where rappers like Run DMC, Ice Cube and Rocksteady Crew used to step on. They brought with them a level of thought processes that only few understood, a level where poetry met metaphysics met palpable themes of love, hate, and loss.

They brought with them, a positive force to hip-hop.

Since then, Eminem hit the mainstream, Atmosphere went overground, Eyedea and Brother Ali, Hieroglyphics, Aesop Rock, Anticon, Immortal Technique, MF Doom, Mr Lif and the whole Def Jux crew hit the new underground. A movie about b-boys came out, (and I know you all are saying "but You Got Served doesn't even begin to represent the underground culture" but hey at least more people know about it than before) Scribble Jam got big, Def Poetry came on the HBO scene.

And for those who chose to believe that this is "nerd rap" for suburban white kids, there's a level of both truth and hypocrisy to that argument. Yes, this misn't fusic isn't for everyone. Yes most of the kids that listen to this music probably are Caucasian and have a need for cognition. But don't limit yourself by not try something out because someone told you "this is music for who and who." The same stigma used to be (and to an extent, still is) attached to hip-hop. The media says "hip hop leads to drugs, gun violence and degradation of women." Is it true?

You must make that decision for yourself

The truth is, all of these factors contributed to what hip hop is today. There needs to be a mainstream for there to be an underground, there needs to be big business for there to be a grass roots, there needs to be a Dr Dre for Eminem to get signed, and ultimately the hip hop movement gets passed to us and it's up to Generation Y to shape and mold hip hop for what we see fit. We are not the movement, just sparkles in the stream.

After all, what art ultimately comes down to is "honest expression of self."

5 out of 5 stars Hip Hop vs. Hip Pop.......2006-12-01

I was surprised at the release date of 2006 because this was around in the 90s. Anyways Masters of the Universe is the album to buy. If you like all this gangster rap thats all over the charts now this album isn't for you. Binary Star put it best there is Hip Hop and there is Hip Pop this album is diffently Hip Hop in the purest form.

5 out of 5 stars WOW, this album is sick!.......2006-10-02

Most people won't agree with me, but Onemanarmy aka. One Be Lo, is the greatest mc of all time. I think no one compares to him lyrically(his partner senim silla got crazy flow too). If you like rap, this cd has to be in your collection. On a side note, the album has too many worthless tracks without music, that is the only thing i would change about the album.

5 out of 5 stars Best Hip-Hop album out there.......2006-10-28

For the most part tons of artists just babble on in all of their albums, you can't even understand what their saying. What I find great about this is that the songs are written with smooth lyrics and beats. The samples on this are a little rough but you should check them out. My top songs for this are:

1. Conquistadors
2. Honest Expression
3. Wolf Man Jack
4. Reality Check

But, I could listen to this all they way through. This is true underground hip-hop at it's best, also check out One.Be.Lo. (the lead's other alias). If you can find this album buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Binary Star - Masters Of The Universe.......2006-04-12

These guys got a pretty ill style. One of my other Hip Hop head friends gave me the word on these cats and I checked this album out. They got a pretty unique style. The production on this album, some people dont like it, but why shouldnt you? It goes perfectly along with these guys styles. They way they flow goes perfectly with the beats they got on the album. Bottom line, these guys can spit! I was shocked, this is true hiphop. This kind of music gives hiphop a name. I like there kinda style, because they can spit complex lyrics and real rhymes. Respect for that. No bubblegum sh**. On the real. Since I heard that this album is out of print, meaning you can buy it, to find it on ebay, but seriously, go buy it! Its well worth it. Support real hiphop forever.

My Top 5 Songs
1.Reality Check
2.Solar Powered
3.Fellowship
4.Masters Of The Universe
5.One Man Army

4 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of all time........2006-03-19

Currently on my list of top 50 hip hop albums of all time. Production is phenomenol, lyrics/emcees on point with zero filler and never a boring moment. One Be Lo [OneManArmy] has gone onto a wonderful solo career but this album will always leave the listener wanting a Binary re-union ASAP!!!

Purchase this. Instant classic. A must own for any hip hop lover.

5 out of 5 stars Oh my God.......2006-02-09

Man this by far the best all around underground album I have ever heard. It is even up there for me with Illmatic and 36 Chambers. Everything the good reviews said was right and those who reviewed it poorly are signed on competing independent labels that suck ass. Senim Silla has the best flow of any emcee I've ever heard and One Man Army is good too.

There is no filler in this album. Every track is unique, and of course ill. I just can't believe that no one has mentioned my favorite track on the album yet, Solar Powered. That ish is just completely ridiculous with the flow. The beat is always in my head.

This is the Hip-Hop album you've been waiting to obsess over.

4 out of 5 stars Masters of the Universe.......2006-06-30

A decent single from Juno Reactor. You get the radio edit for Masters and then 4 remixes of it. None of them really stand out to me and all 4 will probably appeal to dance floors. You'll probably only want this single if you're a die hard Juno Reactor fan... It does have a really cool cover though!

4 out of 5 stars By the powers of Metropolis, I have the power!.......2001-07-28

I don't think Masters of the Universe has anything to do with He-Man, but I can't be too sure. The opening mix on this single certainly has all the energy of a battle between He-Man and Skeletor, but that's where the similarities must end.

The Eternal Basement remix has influences from classical Egyptian string orchestra and Turkish horns--a welcome invasion which blends well with Spanish-inspired female vocal samples and the more occidental techno stylings. This version has a slower tempo than the opening track, though, so it probably won't receive as much club play.

The Neon remix starts off with a more industrial sound, then moves into the familiar territory of 4/4 time driving beats before becoming rather trancey. The sequencing has a rather Front Line Assembly feel to it at times.

Front 242's Pure Remix is a bit disappointing for me. It has a lot of promise with its extremes of treble and bass, but doesn't really develop, despite a crazed drum solo 2/3 of the way through.

i love this album! it and We Love Life are soooo good!

4 out of 5 stars This record is quite up to cocker's standards.......1999-10-07

As a pulp fan, i feel that this album is not that wonderful as their other albums. Aborigine is a very cool song with great lyrics. Some other songs are quite okay, but i just couldn't stand "97 lovers". I recommend this record to Pulp fans out there and give it a try.

2 out of 5 stars Pulp's weakest album.......1999-02-16

Well, Freaks wasn't a brilliant album by any means, but it had enough great songs that I decided to go ahead and check out Masters of the Universe--a companion album, if you will, containing singles and b-sides of the era. As it turned out, I was more than a little disappointed. This has to be considered the weakest of Pulp's albums; it does have a few good songs, but they're far outweighed by mediocrity. Mark of the Devil is quite nice, and just as cheerful as it sounds, whilst Dogs are Everywhere displays a sense of black humour--quite a revelation, given the mightily humourless nature of the band's music at this period. The Will to Power is also worth hearing, if for no other reason than the fact that it's one of only four songs credited to violinist Russell Senior--and it's not bad, either. Little Girl (with blue eyes), 97 Lovers, and They Suffocate at Night (the latter already available on Freaks) all show evidence of Jarvis's future lyrical themes in utero, but that doesn't make them great songs by any means. Aborigine and Simltaneous aren't terrible, but the album as a whole is uninspired.

Nonetheless, as a Pulp completist, I'm glad to own it--although it irritates me to no end that Jarvis was too embarassed to allow the inclusion of one of the b-sides, Silence, here. It just doesn't make sense. I mean, given that this compilation is aimed squarely at completists, who uncritically try to amass everything the band's done, what's the point? It's not like the rest of the album's all that great, anyway. And come on, what would YOU rather have, a "sanitized" version of Master of the Universe (for radio play, apparently--yeah, right...) that is identical to the original but for substituting the word "vegetate" for "masturbate", or a NEW song, no matter how bad it is? Get real here...

All in all, this is definitely only for the very, very hardcore. No one else need bother.

      Album Description

Michael Masley (MAZE-lee) invented "bowhammers" - his own technique for playing the hammered dulcimer using small bows as a striking surface, enabling him to pluck, bow and strike (PBS) the strings simultaneously. He has recorded with artists as diverse as Ry Cooder, Butch Vig, Tom Waits and Zakir Hussain. He is included in "Bakers Biographical Dictionary of Musicians -8th edition".

Jamie Janover is a self-taught musician and photographer. He has been playing the drums since an early age, and has developed his own unique style of playing the hammered dulcimer based on his percussive techniques. He performs solo on hammered dulcimer at numerous festivals including The Telluride Bluegrass Festival and he has appeared on stage with a wide range of artists, from Stanley Jordan and Béla Fleck to The String Cheese Incident and Phish.

This recording captures musical conversations between these two innovative hammered dulcimer players. The combination of their diverse and unique techniques reaches far into new realms of the timbral universe, from cascading symphonies of sound to spacious ethereal ambience.

This Soundtrack is simply excellent! While the opening theme might put one in mind of the superman movie theme, the rest of the soundtrack is pure excellence! From fast paced to more somber music, this is a must for any Masters of the universe fan,or any lover of good mucic!

5 out of 5 stars Masters of the Universe.......2000-01-11

A sword and sorcery film, opposing an impossibly handsome he-man and a fiendish looking ghoul, named Skeletor, in a fight to the death for control of the universe, Masters of the Universe received an appropritely epic score from Bill Conti. The composer gleefully uses all the tenets of the genre to write cues that are all at once amusingly exhilerating and grandly representative of the screen action. Very few surprises here, just a rock-solid score that delivers the goods, with the Graunke Orchestra doing a bang up job in this spirited recording.

      3 out of 5 stars Soundtrack.......1999-09-03

The Masters of the Universe soundtrack was excellent but it lacked originallity. It sounded like the Star Wars and Back to the Future music.

I don't care what anyone says about the Masters of the Universe soundtracks. I will treasure them for the rest of my life. I have the 1992 New Edition soundtrack by the Edel Company and Silva Screen Records which is pictured above. Plus I also have the original Varese Sarabande Masters of the Universe Soundtrack which is very rare and hard to find. For those of you who don't know: the cover of the original Masters of the Universe soundtrack has the same picture as the cover of the movie's VHS box. I like that one better than the cover of the New Edition CD. I am a big fan of 80s soundtracks. Besides Masters of the Universe, my CD collection includes: the E.T. soundtrack, the Ghostbusters soundtracks (1 & 2), the Transformers soundtrack, all 3 Back to the Future soundtracks, the Superman and Supergirl soundtracks, and Weird "Al" Yankovic's UHF soundtrack.

3 out of 5 stars Hawkwind - 'Masters Of The Universe' (Simply The Best).......2005-06-20

Wasn't this the title that was first released on the EMI label?I'm pretty sure it was.Either way,'Masters...' is merely ANOTHER disc for all us Hawkwind completists.Total of six tunes. For any newcomers that may be reading this, there are two cuts,"Master Of The Universe" and "Brainstorm" from their 'actual' lp's of which they first appeared. Two tracks from their famed 'Space Ritual' live reissue,"Orgone Accumultor" and "Sonic Attack" and two more tunes,a B-side "It's So Easy" and "Lost Johnny" from their 'Hall Of The Mountain Grill' lp.Great cover, don't you think?

1 out of 5 stars From the loft.......2005-05-08

I bought this vinal in 1980 and enjoyed the first four tracks. The first two tracks go together well (works on an Lp, but not on a CD), the next two do not fit with the first two (the last two tracks are rubbish). I left it in my parents loft (with the rest of my Lps) in 1986 and had not listened to it until 2005. I now feel that the whole album is rubbish.
