Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Musical, But Product Quality - Eh.......2007-07-15
I absolutely love the musical so I'm thrilled with the cd.
My problem was not with the quality of the cd, but with the plastic case. The cd cases always come cracked. Although it doesn't affect the quality of the cd itself, it's rather disheartening that Amazon charges customers for its poor shipping.
MODERNIZE your music collection!!!.......2007-07-13
This is an AMAZING musical and great album. It is sure to jazz-up any music collection! BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!
A must to add to your collection.......2007-05-18
I was very fortunate enough to see this on Broadway. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen! The music has just enough jazz and contemporary vive that any musical lover would enjoy! It's also got tapping in it! Sutton is simply awesome in this role and all of the cast can really belt out their songs. Harriet Harris is phenominal in her role as Mrs. Meers. I highly recommend this to all broadway lovers! It's one to add to your collection!
Delightful.......2006-06-12
The music takes a little bit to grow on you, but boy, does it! It's wonderful, charming, romantic, funny--just like the play itself. I loved almost every song and I was really impressed with "Long As I'm Here With You"-- I thought it was an old song written back in the twenties, because it so sounded like one. The cast is absolutely energetic and endearing, and Sutton Foster just *rocks*. Definitely worth the money.
YOU WILL LOVE IT.......2006-02-17
If you like musicals, you will NOT REGRET purchasing this musical soundtrack. JUST DO IT. It's so great, you will be listening to it forever. I also saw the show at the Kennedy Center in D.C. and it's one of the best I've ever seen. (And I've seen A LOT.)
Have Fun!

Customer Reviews:
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Awesome, lyrical debut...Xzibit comes into his own (4.5/5).......2006-12-13
In 1996, a little-known west coast rapper named Xzibit dropped his debut album "At the Speed of Life" to little fanfare, but it became one of the best albums of the year and created a new rap star from California. Xzibit separated himself from the g-funk craze that was quickly sweeping the west coast and the entire nation by making lyrical, relevant, and focused hip hop music that was unlike anything else out there. The self described "dysfunctional member of the Alkaholiks" came across as an angry and constantly entertaining rapper who was not only intelligent but extremely talented as well. He has a great flow and uses obscure sounding metaphors to get his point across sometimes. Despite the great production, this album has a distinctly underground feel, kind of like an Alkaholiks record. The production is usually great, mostly dark beats that fit Xzibit's focused sound. Guests on the album include such greats as King Tee and Rass Kass and legends such as Diamond D and DJ Muggs contribute beats. Overall this is a very unique and special rap album that I highly recommend.
After the intro, the album begins with the apocalyptic-sounding title track, which has gritty, underground-style production and Xzibit comes correct on the mic, starting the album on a strong note. The following collabo "Just Maintain" is a more loose posse cut, another strong point. The threatening "Eyes May Shine" has a good chorus and cool electronic sounding beat. X drops raw philosophy over great production on "Positively Negative." "Paparazzi" is the best song, a certified classic that made Xzibit a household name. He brutally challenges the rappers who perform "only for the money and the fame," and each verse is great. The beat is amazing, a soulful, kind of sad melody with strings and a good vocal sample. I also love the very emotional "The Foundation," a song written to the rapper's baby son, the lyrics are really deep and the piano-laced production fits it well. "Bird's Eye View" and "Hit and Run (Part II)" are both very lyrical, subdued, street-level tracks. Over a simple beat, X promises to "Carry the Weight" on a track so titled. I love the song "Plastic Surgery," It's the funniest song on the album. The dark "Enemies and Friends" closes the album on a great note.
"At the Speed of Life" is probably Xzibit's best album to date, a really lyrical and unique album that still sounds fresh and interesting ten years later. It really doesn't sound dated at all. Xzibit is a great rapper who was hungry and emotional, more than ever on this debut. I definitely suggest fans of hip hop purchase "At the Speed of Life," this album really doesn't receive the respect it deserves and is a great record to listen to.
X to the Z at his best (4.5 Stars).......2006-02-05
One of the dopest CD's that came from the West Coast from 1996, the year when gangsta rap was loosing it's momentum. Xzibit shows how he can carry the weight on this album with the help of Tha Alkaholiks and The Golden State Warriors. "Paparazzi" was the song that set the tone for his career, by saying people are rapping for money and fame and not to show their skills, and 10 years later we all know that he contradicts that song of being on MTV, Video Games, etc. Judging from other reviews on this, I believe "The Foundation" was the second single which he dedicates to his son about the challenges in life. Other standout tracks were: Hit and Run (partII)- my favorite, and Plastic Surgery which featured The Golden State Warriors (Ras Kass and Saffir) another dope song. Some of the interludes were nice ("Don't Hate Me"). What brings this album down is the lack of production. Songs like "Birds Eye View" which features Tha Alkaholiks is a great example of what I'm talking about, quite possibly a not so good beat by E-Swift. Even though I think "Hit and Run" stands out, some people may not be amuzed by the watered down beat on that song. Aside from those minor flaws I believe is one of Xzibit's best CD's that he has realeased. I highly recommend this to those who love hip hop in the 90's.
Before "Pimp My Ride" There Was..........2005-07-20
At the Speed of Life is a powerhouse of 90s hip hop music.
Right from the go, the apocalyptic "At the Speed of Life" sends chills down the spine of anyone with ears to hear as Xzibit establishes himself lyrically, vocally and content-wise as a hardcore, "real" MC who is not afraid to leave behind the unnecessary aspects of "thug life" and rap about things more meaningful and universal.
Xzibit raps from the West Coast, but in no way sounds West Coast, choosing instead to go with a dressed-down, more subtle and intelligent sound we have all come to associate with the East Coast rap outfits.
X delivers all sorts of stories and ideas, including his childhood that involved beatings from a step-parent, time in youth prison and best friends being sent down for life behind bars; a letter to his baby son trying to tell him that there is more to life than can maybe be seen firsthand on the streets of LA, and a track about the cancerous disease that is eating hip hop from the inside entitled Paparazzi.
Without doubt the most powerful song on an album not lacking powerful songs is Paparazzi: an epic of rap music set to a classical sample from Gabriel Faure's "Pavane". Xzibit rides the energy created by the strings and divine female vocals with what has got to be one of the best first verses of hip hop history.
Worth checking out for any fan of rap music, anyone interested in the social commentary on rap music going on from the inside and indeed anyone who can appreciate powerful statements in the form of music.
Xzibit's Debut Album.......2005-07-07
This is easily Xzibit's best album. Lyrically he's unstoppable, and the production on this album is very dark. I can listen to this album without skipping any tracks. The Skits aren't annoying so you can listen to them.

Great debut from westcoast's undergrounds finest.......2007-05-15
Xzibit is one of those Mcs that you can put in the underrated category. His delivery is sharp and unique for a westcoast rapper. On this album Xzibit not only brings the heat but his guest appearances(King Tee, Rass Kass, Saafir) shine also(with the exception of Hurricane Gee)over killer production. Standout Tracks:AT THE SPEED OF LIFE, PLASTIC SURGERY, PAPARAZZI, THE FOUNDATION(touching tribute to his son), EYES MAY SHINE, POSITIVELY NEGATIVE, CARRY THE WEIGHT, BIRD'S EYE VIEW and ENEMIES AND FRIENDS. Filler: Just Maintain could have been better and Hit and Run is bland. Bottom Line: Xzibit's At The Speed Of Life is a great debut and an excellent prequel to his best album 40 Dayz and 40 Nightz. Xzibit shatters the theory that all great Mcs only come from Up North to bits and pieces with lyrical dynamite. Definetly worth the money.
4.5 stars for X to the Z's debut album.......2007-02-15
10 years later and 6 total solo albums under his belt now, I'd have to say this is his best album (I really should have gave it 5 stars), slightly better than ("40 Dayz & 40 Nightz" & "Restless" - both also get 4.5 stars). Before he Pimped peoples rides and starred in TV shows and movies he was a hungry west coast lyricist and it shows on this one. Shorter than all his other albums, at only 11 songs, you get 2 ok ones, 1 classic, 2 almost classic tracks and the other 6 are good songs, a few being real good. Guests aren't too heavy either, on 4 songs. His lyrical hunger can really be felt on this album since he was young and tryin' to make a name for himself (which he did eventually). Production is nice as well. E-Swift & Thayod Asar each do 3 songs, Craig Sherrad does 2, and DJ Muggs, Diamond D & DJ Pen 1 each do 1 song. A nice album for his fans to have and his best solo from his first 6.
#2 - 9.5 (nice beat)
#3 - 7 (f/ Hurricane Gee & J-Ro)
#4 - 8
#5 - 9.5 (f/ King Tee -- great beat)
#7 - 10 (CLASSIC -- great beat)
#8 - 8.5 (deeper song)
#10 - 8 (f/ Alkaholiks)
#11 - 6
#12 - 8.5 (deeper more personal song)
#13 - 8 (f/ Saafir & Ras Kass)
#14 - 9 (good beat)

Xzibit - At The Speed Of Life.......2006-01-04
One of the best Xzibit albums. He gots real deep lyrics on this album, and he gots real bangin beats. If you want an Xzibit album, THIS is the one you have to have in your collection, he seems at the top of his potential on this album. He talks about life on the streets, and personal stuff, that you usually dont hear in rap now days. X keeps it real here. Everyone knows the joint, called Paparazzi, stuff is killa, Check this out now!
My Top 5 Songs

2.Eyes May Shine
3.Paparazzi
4.Positively Negative
5.The Foundation
Xzibit's First Album/3.5 Stars.......2004-07-18
Not at all as good as Xzibit's other albums, though still some nice songs. Paparazzi, the Foundation, and Hit & Run Pt. II are nice songs, but there was alot of songs I didn't like. If you want Xzibit's best, then pick up "40 Dayz & 40 Nights" You should wait to buy this after you have the rest of Xzibit's albums.
Lyrical Talent.......2004-06-17
It's a rarity to find an emcee from the west coast with such lyrical dexterity and still happen to make it mainstream. Although the subject matter of his rhymes have gotten a bit more materialistic as his career blossomed, Mr. X to the Z is a force to be reckoned with. If you walk the streets and ask a 16 year old who Xzibit is, they'll tell you that he's, "that rapper who hosts 'Pimp My Ride.'" However, in '96 whent the conscious hip hop movement was nearing the end of its prime, a real hip hop head would've told you that he's the realest m...f... from the west coast. Besides, it must be proof that X is ill if he's priveleged enough to spit on a track with Talib Kweli. This album is his best work. Although primitive in beats, and rough around the edges, it should be recognized as a classic. Be sure to listen to 'Paparazzi,' 3 times over. It's an il track. 1

Great music - fun to singalong.......2007-03-10
We have the Christmas Revels CD and loved that, but I can't stand Christmas music in February, so I bought this CD. My family adores it -- my kids, 4 and 6, love to sing along to it. There are a few drinking songs that praise alcoholic beverages (Good Ale, Jone's Ale), but I'm not sure my kids get the gist and it doesn't bother me.
I felt this was well worth the cost -- there are a lot of songs on here. I love that we can sing along to music that isn't sacchrine, dumb-downed, kids music and I like the historical nature of the tunes (the liner notes are great -- they give background on the May festival and each song has a few sentences of background, as well as providing the lyrics. There are a few songs that are instrumental, but most have singing).
Another album my family is enjoying is Dean Shostack Davy Crockett's Fiddle - they are instrumental early American fiddle tunes.
Very fresh and fun........2001-09-06
I defy you to not sing along with this album. The songs are catcy without being tiring, folksy without being simple, nostalgic without being sentimental. The Revel Singers make you feel like you're in the midst of a big party full of boisterous people having a great time. I was introduced to this album via my local eclectic radio station that played "Jones's Ale" one morning and I was hooked.
Refreshing Change from Tired Carols.......1999-12-29
Probably taken from one of the delightful annual Revels Christmas/holiday musicals, the sound is Christmas-y without being cloying. It's joyful, fresh and charming.

Album Description
First smattered throughout with all-instrumental acoustic songs, then emerges the tender voice of Chris Lucas, drawing inspiration from Bruce Cockburn and Phil Keaggy alike. At the Speed of Life is a true folk album, although a classical style peeks out at unexpected moments, providing a moving enhancement for the artist's eloquent word pictures.
Customer Reviews:
Acoustic Virtuoso!.......2005-02-06
Chris Lucas is a very unknown acoustic guitar virtuoso. His playing is as progressive as it gets and on top of that hes got a fine voice. His music has a fine tone and quality, it's a bit hokey but its a very good album. One would diffinetly hear his Bruce Cockburn influence, in guitar style and voice, but he's no clone. He has many influences and you can tell. Plus like I said his guitar playing is tops. Like a mixture of Keaggy,Cockburn,Hedges etc.. Cool Beans and David Danced showcase his style. Lyrically he's christian but with more of an enchanting quality like early Cockburn . It's a pretty creative album ,and the only place i've seen it was in a christian bookstore . Luckily you can get it on Amazon. It's worth the dough. Especially if you like mellow classical folk.
