Like a rootsier Jimmy Buffett, Delbert McClinton is an established, hard-touring veteran whose audience doesn't expect from him too much out of the norm. Regardless, the Texan's quintessential mix of country, R&B, Tex-Mex, blues, honky-tonk, New Orleans bump, lounge jazz, and good-time rock and roll is durable enough to sustain a career, especially since nobody does it nearly as well as he does. In the spirit of "don't fix what isn't broken," this album of 13 McClinton originals preserves the established formula. But to his credit, the leathery-voiced singer, now in his mid-60s, never seems to be going through the motions. He delivers this good-natured Americana with gutsy enthusiasm and enough raw energy to power the ocean liner on one of his famous blues cruises. Just as comfortable tearing into the Stonesy rock of "Dead Wrong" as the soft, Spanish guitar-driven folk of "Down into Mexico"--a tale of a robbery/relationship gone bad that flawlessly mixes his tender and tough sides--McClinton revels in his element. Fiddles, sax, and pedal steel augment the arrangements, highlighting the country and blues at the heart of Cost of Living. All that's missing is the sweat, booze, and boisterous crowd that remain an integral aspect of McClinton's legendary shows. --Hal Horowitz

5 out of 5 stars Turn it UP!.......2007-01-04

Especially for the first track, "One Of The Fortunate Few"! (Did you do like me and buy the CD "One Of The Fortunate Few", thinking the song of the same name would be on it???). I also like very much the track "Two Step Too", which purty much sums up my own taste in musica. "I like to listen to the rock 'n roll, but I like to two step too"!

5 out of 5 stars His best album in years.......2006-10-12

I've been a Delbert fan for more than 20 years, and this is his best release in a long time. There is no voice like Delbert's; man, can he sing. From the raucous "Hammerhead Stew" to some welcome country songs like "Midnight Communion" and "Two Step Too" this CD rocks. As for those reviewers who dislike the country element here, they aren't true Delbert fans, since real aficiandos know that some of Delbert's early works were
good ole country (listen to "Victim Of Life's Circumstances"). The two best cuts here are "Down Into Mexico" (what a story!) and about the saddest song I've ever heard, "Kiss Her Once For Me." When you first listen to the latter, it's easy to assume it's about a lost girlfriend. It's not--it's about a dad who's kind of lost his daughter to the girl's mother, and as a divorced dad, this song breaks my heart. Go, Delbert!

5 out of 5 stars cost of living.......2006-08-31

I can find nothing bad about this cd. It's like Springsteen lyrics, guitar strains of Marty Robbins and maybe a little touch of John Fogerty. I can recall sitting in a bar thirty years ago with some of my military buds and listening to this kind of music, wishing we were someplace else. What memories this cd evolked! All in all I can say that Delbert McClinton is becoming part of my blues collection and will continue to add more.

5 out of 5 stars lone star star.......2006-03-19

Texas music is more than music from Texas. It's an alchemy of apparently disparate essences - blues, soul, rock'n'roll - and Delbert McClinton is a master chemist. Like his fellow Lone Star Staters Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and Doug Sahm, McClinton's defiance of definition may have denied him a wider audience, but those who know him can consider themselves, to quote one of his songs, "one of the fortunate few". McClinton wrote most of the 13 songs here and anything he doesn't write he makes his own (I'll Change My Style, associated with Jimmy Reed, becomes wonderfully greasy swamp R&B). For tragic, noirish adventure with a femme fatale, try Down into Mexico ("Sherrie was a dancer / she was a schemer / we came up with a foolproof plan"). Those who have lost love will share the ache of Kiss Her Once For Me ("and there's a part of her life I won't be there to see / when you're holding her tonight, kiss her once for me"). McClinton just turned 65 and shows no sign of decline. Start here and work back to such gems as Genuine Cowhide (1976) and The Jealous Kind (1980). (This review appeared in The Age newspaper in Melbourne, Australia.)

1 out of 5 stars What a shame..........2006-03-14

This cannot be the real Delbert McClinton, all throw-away songs save one. When Delbert leaves. . .Delbert's gone.

4 out of 5 stars Big fat guy with a Big Fat sound ! ! ! .......2007-04-10

This is hard and heavy funk and soul - - literally... big, beefy, brassy...
Sadly, the lead singer, the 400lb. Baby Huey died a year before it was released.
Actually, the band itself is worth the purchase... however, no doubt, Baby Huey fronted it.
- - Tracks include classic "Memphis" type soul (typical to the era) as well as the live funky horn and percussion driven high energy grooves that make the album worth the purchase... Though true, many of the tunes aren't THAT much different than their covers (or sound like you heard them before) the energy is definitely there... A high point being Curtis Mayfield (who signed him)'s MIGHTY MIGHTY SPADE AND WHITEY which is just as good (if not better) than the original.... you can really feel the party atmosphere!

A few tunes seem a cross between RIPPLE and BLACK HEAT... admittedly as a whole the album is not all RAW FUNK... however when the band does go into RIPPING mode... they RIP... A few tunes even have an (early) Chicago influence while others are typical Wilson/Otis/Bobby Womack-ish influenced soul... though again, the album shines for its group sound - - a favorite tune of mine being MAMA GET YOURSELF TOGETHER, with its cranked up horn/rhythm guitar driven groove (with a suspiciously Booker T'ish type setting on a really fat sounding Hammond.)

If you like this type of stuff, I'd definitely get KASHMERE TEXAS THUNDER SOUL (actually first...)

3 out of 5 stars Classic Horn Band.......2007-01-09

For those who are fans of Chicago Transit Authority and Blood Sweat and Tears, this album presents another side of the "horn band" sound of the late '60's and '70's. Funky, raw and over the top approach to the music.

5 out of 5 stars THE LEGEND SAYS IT ALL.......2007-01-03

ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS A LEGEND IN IT'S SELF. LISTEN TO ME REMINDS ME OF BACK IN THE DAY WHEN I USE TO GO OUT TO THE CLUBS AND THE GUYS WOULD BE BREAK DANCING ON THE FLOOR. (AHHH THE GOOD OLE DAYS) THIS CD IS A CLASSIC A MUST BUY!

5 out of 5 stars "Listen to Me," Baby Huey is the real deal.......2006-10-24

James "Baby Huey" Ramey died before his album came out in 1971, but put on the first track, "Listen to Me," and you know this sucka is immortal. Baby Huey is R&B, soul, rock'n'roll, and psychedelia all rolled into one 400-pound fireball of pure talent and grit. The sucka could sing and he was backed by the tightest band on earth. Sucka played for royalty, sucka played for the hood, sucka died while making this debut album that would have sent him to the top of the world. Do yourself a favor and buy this album now! Your booty will thank me later.

5 out of 5 stars A soul/blues.funk/psychedelic classic........2005-08-08

'Huey, a chicago native, was a protege of Curtis Mayfield (who produced this album and released it via his Curtom imprint) and somewhat of an eccentric. He was 400 pounds, had a huge afro, a King Tut beard and dressed flamboyantly. The picture on the back of this album is priceless : him in a pinstripe suit with a huge ankle length robe over it standing reading a cookbook. He recorded a handul of singles and died of a heartattack aged 26 before this album came out in 1970

He took his cues from Chicago groups like The Impressions (the group Curtis Mayfield fronted before going solo), Mayfield himself, the psychedelic blues albums by Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf released on legendary Chicago label Chess Records in the late 60's and then mixed them with some raw, ballsy Stax soul via Booker T & The M.G's melting pot to create something that only Mayfield, Issac Hayes, James Brown, Funkadelic and Sly Stone managed to better.

You have the driving, gritty soul of "listen to me" & "hard times", the funked-up psychedelic blues of "mighty mighty" & "runnin'" (which Mayfield wrote and later recorded but the Huey original is the definitive version), instrumental jams like "mama get yourself together" & "one dragon, two dragon" and, finally, you have what have to be two of the greatest cover versions ever recorded : his funked up version of "california dreamin'" and his staggering 9 minute + version of Sam Cooke's "a change is gonna come" which has to be heard to be believed.

Rap fiends should definately check this album as it's been sampled to death over the years and "listen to me" was a party favorite back in the days of Bronx block parties in the 70's. If you're a fan of blues or Hendrix and would like to start investigating soul/funk but find James Brown too dancefloor friendly or Marvin Gaye too polished then this would a good starter along with the first 3 Curtis Mayfield studio albums.

5 out of 5 stars Finnish Metal Masterpiece.......2007-05-17

Not the best metal band in the world, but they do deserve a lot more credit than they have been given. I love this band and they have a great style. Listening to this cd makes me want to go to Finland for the wintertime. Buy this cd, you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars progress in winter metal.......2005-11-23

This is a good buy for two full discs of music. You really hear a band find it's sound and get much better in the process. And as they get better they hopefully will now get bigger. Some of the older stuff is muddy due to a limited budget I would guess, but some has some real doomy almost sorrow moments that I really like and wish they would incorporate more of. If you like black, death or other extreme metal with a progessive slant check this band out.

5 out of 5 stars The Tower Does It Best On Stage.......2003-09-18

The first Tower Of Power recording this reveiwer ever
listened to is still the best! One of the tightest Soul bands
to ever hit the stage proved their virtuoso chops with a fan-
    tastic concert.
TOP was always known for having the "best horn section in
the business (to quote Paul Shaffer of Letterman fame)", but
the rhythm section has to get its props, too.
Arranger/trumpeter Greg Adams has a great solo on "What Is
Hip?", using his microphone as a mute, and lead trumpeter Mic
Gillette shows off his steely trumpet sound on the intro to
"You're Still a Young Man". Guitarist Bruce Conte thrills con-
stantly and his vocal on "Sparkling in the Sand" makes one won-
der why he wasn't featured more often as a singer.
The 23-plus minute "Knock Yourself Out" features a very
long but very inventive Lenny Pickett tenor solo, plus shorter
solos by the rest of the horns, including guest trumpeter Bill
Lamb. Organist Chester Thompson essays a funky solo using his
Clavinet and the ARP string synthesizer, backed by Conte, bassist extraordinaire Francis Rocco Prestia and one of the
    best funk drummers, David Garibaldi.
This CD is a fine introduction to the sound of Tower Of
    Power.

5 out of 5 stars THE Best "Live" album........Period!.......2003-09-14

I first heard this album in 1977...lemme tell you, finding good funk and soul up in Maine at that time wasn't easy! But as soon as I heard the band tear into "Down to the Nightclub", my ears opened like a parachute. I then proceeded to wear that album out playing it for my friends, who then demanded multiple listenings. We were all music majors in college by the way. This recording stands only with 1 other "live" album...that being "Waiting For Colombus" by Little Feat (that features the TOP Horns BTW).....as THE best live album you will hear, and the best representation of TOP you can get. Almost all of their albums stand out on the frontline of funk and soul, but this is the one to get if'n you can get only one. Monster horns, a rhythm section that locks it up tight, and Hubert Tubbs cooks it all down to a bubbling pot of steaming funk-gumbo that if you aren't stomping your feet by the 3rd cut....you're six-by-six brother!! And this features THE definitive cut of "What Is Hip" BTW........

5 out of 5 stars Simply put, THE GREATEST LIVE ALBUM EVER!!!!!.......2003-08-21

When I first heard this cd in 1991, I was on a road trip with a bunch of my college friends. It quickly became a staple of my traveling cd collection for the car and continues to be there even today. I would tend to disagree with the gentleman from St. Louis that said this was the 2nd best TOP lineup ever, putting the lineup from "Tower Of Power" to "Urban Renewal" at the top. I would reverse those since this particular cd and "In the Slot" are my #1 and #2 favorite TOP discs (the Lenny Williams-led discs being 3, 4, and 5 respectively.) This reminds me a lot of Billy Joel's "Songs In The Attic" in that it is material that while sounding adequate in the studio(What Is Hip being the exception), just ABSOLUTELY BURNS live. From the opening sounds of "Down To The Nightclub" to the raw force of the AMAZING TOP horn section in their greatest lineup ever in "You're Still A Young Man." The version of "What Is Hip" is faster and every bit as fantastic as the studio version on the aforementioned "Tower of Power." While I do enjoy the version of "Sparkling In The Sand" with the fabulous trumpet work of Mic Gillete, I almost wish they would've put something different on this album, maybe "Soul Vaccination" or "On The Serious Side." I'm not complaining though. They definately save the best for last with the 23:07 version of "Knock Yourself Out." Lenny Pickett comes in with an amazing sax solo that makes you feel as if you've gone 15 rounds with the heavyweight champ of the world only to have the organ/bass pedal solo by Chester Thompson say "Uh uh, you got one more round to go." The key to the whole band are the anchors: Rocco Prestia on bass, and David Garibaldi on drums. Its great to see that these two are back in good health (Prestia) and in the band (Garibaldi) If you only buy one TOP cd....buy this one first and you'll be hooked forever.

Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.

I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

5 out of 5 stars A must from the 80's!.......2007-06-01

The version of the song "living on a video" is exactly the same as it was in the 7" vinyl...I have that too :/?

    4 out of 5 stars Essential 80's CD.......2000-01-11

There is no way you can say you have a complete set of 80's CD's unless you have this one. This band (although sometimes cheesy :)) does an awsome job of producing the 'typical' 80's album. The songs are sometimes repetitive, and I sometimes wonder "Didn't I already hear this exact same melody on the second track! ". I would have given it 5 stars, but the fact that so many of the melodies on some songs sound identical, i'd have to give it a 4. But all in all, its a great CD if you like the 80's fast paced synth-pop sound. Also great for workouts! :)

5 out of 5 stars smashing cd. great dance stuff for the retro junkie.......1999-11-06

5 out of 5 stars Precious Music From A Neglected Master.......2002-06-20

Connie Boswell is my favorite female singer of jazz and classic pop. It's a combination of that sweet Louisiana accent, the soft and silky voice, and her brilliant ability to both croon and swing masterfully. Connie (aka "Connee") had an ability, Like Sinatra and Holiday, to find the true meaning of a lyric, whether joyous, tragic, or romantic, and convey it to the listener with utter sincerity and empathy. One can't help but detect an inherent goodness in Connie, which gives her music all the more warmth and charm. Ella Fitzgerald always cited Connie as her main influence, Irving Berlin called her the best ballad singer in the business, and she is still revered by fans and critics alike. Critic Will Friedwald gives Connie serious praise in his book, Jazz Singing. For many, myself included, Connie's voice is nothing short of magical.

This disc is a nifty compilation covering the years 1932-42. The sound quality is very good, and the choice of tunes diverse, from the swingin' joy of "Me Minus You," to the honest hurtin' of "They Can't Take That Away From Me," to the sweet lullaby, "Little Man You've Had A Busy Day." While there are a couple of numbers which are fairly bland and commercial, Connie's voice goes a long way in making those few acceptable. In fact it is surprising that, working under the suffocating grip of commercial-minded Decca Records chief Jack Kapp, Connie was able to maintain such high artistic integrity and record the many fine standards that she did.

There are not many Connie solo collections out there, but the ones that do exist are all good, and each has some great material that the others don't. Some other good ones are "Moonlight And Roses" on Flare records (which nicely offers a high concentration of Connie's jazzier recordings), "Deep In A Dream" on Harlequin, and the awesome double disc set from Jasmine(priced as a single disc), "They Can't Take These Songs Away From Me." Be aware that Connie changed the spelling of her first name to "Connee" midway through her career, and many places have her listed as two different people, so always try both spellings to see what's available.

For a totally different kind of fun check out Connie with her two sisters, collectively known as the Boswell sisters. This innovative jazz vocal group of the 20s and 30s sang impossibly tight harmonies backed by some of the best hot jazz musicians of the time. Connie, aside from being the lead vocalist, was also a multi-instrumentalist and crafted many of the groups complex arrangements.

I was introduced to Connee Boswell by a zazz/blues freak in Melbourne Australia. Bought the disc and it is now my favourite. It is music that everyone likes. My mother (80 years old) still taps her toes as she remembers her youth. Music like this isn't easy to find, - but I will just have to keep looking
