In hindsight, it seems almost incredible: 27 years ago, a young musician named Jeff Wayne (who at the time primarily wrote music for commercials) fell in love with H.G. Wells' much-loved book The War of the Worlds, and decided to make a musical version of it. Star Wars had just put people's minds into outer space, musical theatre was hugely successful, and long, anthemic orchestral prog-rock was all the rage. Wayne was inspired by all these elements and decided to gather together his peers and make a musical-mixed-with-spoken-word album, with the script taken directly from the famous book. This was by no means a soundtrack to a movie; in fact, all of the visuals were to come straight from the listener's minds (hard to imagine in today's video-oriented world.) The two-LP set featured Sir Richard Burton as frontman, along with some of the leaders of the progressive rock world who joined in on the fun. Moody Blues' Justin Hayward, "Rock On" vocalist David Essex and Thin Lizzy lead Philip Lynott each did more than sing on the record, they took a part in the musical play, performing key roles alongside the aforementioned dramatist Burton.
Amazingly, the eccentric project was a massive success, selling over 13 million copies and staying on the U.K. charts for over 260 weeks straight. DJs and bands--including the Orbital and Todd Terry--still use WOTW samples to inspire their own works. Unquestionably, the genesis of electronica can (in part) be mapped back to the War of the Worlds' use of sound experimentation and synthesized grooves.
The re-released double CD got a revamping both on an auditory and visual front: on the sonic side, the collection is now a remastered disc, mixed both in stereo and 5.1 surround sound. On the cosmetic side, the collection is now a six-panel digipack, with 48 pages of lyrics, biographies, and a handful of paintings from the original artwork. The music comes as a pair of Super Audio CDs (SACDs), a technology that will play both in standard and SACD players, the latter receiving up to four more times the sonic information for superior sound quality. --Denise Sheppard

War of the Worlds.......2007-02-17
My father used to listen to this a lot when I was a kid. I final found this and it is as great as I remember...
Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds.......2007-01-04
I am trying to replace my 80's cassettes with dvd's. This s a very inexpensive way of doing this. You guys got a ton more titles that=n the local music store chains. Keep up the good work. My older brother purchased this musical on a 2 record album. It sounded great on a record player, but it sounds even better in this format. Thanx again
One of a kind!.......2006-12-31
Jeff Wayne's "The War of the Worlds" is truly a unique undertaking (a two-hour rock album based on an H.G. Wells novel? who would think of such a thing?)--and a remarkably successful one. Steering almost entirely clear of special effects, Wayne uses recurring musical elements to tell his story--the ominous chords of the main theme; the driving bass rhythm which we first hear at the start of "The Heat Ray"; the eerie Martian whistle which makes a final, unexpected appearance in the Epilogue--with great effectiveness. Sure, this is a 1976 recording, and the wokka-wokka disco sound of the era makes occasional appearances--but overall, this recording has aged remarkably well. Wayne clearly has mastery of all musical genres. My only complaint would be that the second disc isn't quite as inspired as the first--too much atmosphere and not enough action for my taste. Nonetheless, a 5-star album.
Good stuff never fades away.......2006-12-21
I bought the 2 LP set of this back when it first came out, after hearing a snippet of it on the radio. Simply put, it stands on its own against ANYTHING written, or recorded since, in any popular/rock music arena. I just found out how popular it has become, which is very cool. I was right 25 years ago........ ;-)
Did I say RECORD PLAYER?.......2006-08-06
I have the original LP records (remember those?) of this production. I loved it then but had tired of having to drag out an antique record player to enjoy Jeff Wayne's Musical Version Of The War Of The Worlds.
Enter CD's! This is a great experience for those of us who own the original. The ease of CD's makes this production enjoyable again! I also recommend it for everyone else who has never heard it before.

Much Luv!!!.......2007-05-23
The Art Of War, the title says it all. This is probobly one of the best 2 disc I've heard. I mean, 'Let The Law End', 'Friends', 'Wasteland Warriors', 'Thug Luv', 'Look Into My Eyes',' Ready 4 War'. I mean, this is only 6 songs out of the 28 tracks. The beats are smooth, lyrics are violent.A Must H!
ART OF WAR!!!! MR. LEATHER FACE.......2007-01-16
IN MY OPINION THIS IS BONE THUGS SECOND BEST CD. IF YOU ARE STARTING TO GET INTO BONE THUGS NOW I RECCOMEND THIS CD WITH E.1999.ETERNAL WICH IS ANOTHER GREAT ALBUM.. THIS CD YOU CAN REALLY JUST PRESS PLAY AND LET IT PLAY NO SKIPPIN' TRACK CUZ THEIR ALL WORTH LISTENIN'
The best of The Thugs IMO.......2006-05-11
When you're dealing with 2 disc efforts it's always a delicate balance. You always have to appreciate the extra songs, but then you dread the filler material that had to be inserted. The Art of War is one of those 2 CD efforts, and one that comes off quite well. The Art of War gets no press. It's a disc that nobody ever talks about, but a great one nonetheless.
The disc some of my personal favorites: "Handle the Vibe", "Look Into My Eyes", "Body Rott", "Mind of a Souljah", "If I Could Teach the World", "Thug Luv", "Wasteland Warriors", "U Ain't Bone", "Friends", and "Evil Paradise". This is almost a full disc full of songs that I really love. One doesn't realize how many good songs are on here until one looks at the back and really counts. This doesn't even include the songs that are okay. The sheer content of good songs really sets Art of War apart from most 2 CD efforts (and one CD efforts).
Another interesting point is that this stage is a sort of half evolved Bone Thugs. They aren't the youngsters from East 1999 Eternal or Creepin on ah Come Up and fortunately they're not at all like they are on BNTHResurrection. They are so smooth, so professional, and the raps are fast. They branch out from plainly violent raps with harsh beats. The CD is smooth. The beats are polished and the lyrics are strong. The Bone Thugs trade in their glocks for books on this effort. They really get a lot more contemplative on Art of War. They rarely get dumb on this album and sound like the patriarchs of rap that they are. They don't point out how good they are; they simply pump out good tracks.
Art of War is simply a collection of mostly laid back cool Bone tracks. They have it all on this CD and the number of tracks only adds to it. It has an awesome vibe throughout. It's not terribly dark, but it is somewhat mysterious. The beats are generally off the beaten path. They experiment with gun sounds in "Thug Luv" featuring 2Pac. The beat in "Body Rott" has a weird, but interesting feel to it as well. Remixes and remakes of old songs are also well done with "Friends" and "Evil Paradise". Bone successfully puts their stamp on these songs that could have been horrid flops.
The downside is that there is no crescendo on the Art of War. There isn't a song that really personifies the album or that brings it to the most elite level. Top 10 hits simply aren't here. The CD sets a tone and basically does not change throughout both discs. This isn't really a bad thing, unless you strictly aren't feeling it from the start.
This album reminds me of Cube's War and Peace Vol. 1. It has no signature song but it really has a lot of good tracks on it. When a CD achieves this type of consistency I feel the need to reward them. I can listen to this CD all the way through and not fall asleep. This is really the pinnacle Bone Thugs album, in my view.
Excellent Album.......2006-03-05
I have read many reviews of this album that say that there is too much filler on this album, and that it should have been reduced to just one disc with only the best songs. I disagree though, with so many tracks on this album even people who aren't bone thug fans will be able to find something they like. Although in my opinion not quite as good as E.1999 this is probably Bones most diverse album.
Great Album.......2006-02-22
This is a very good cd.At first i thought it was ok then it grew on me.This cd really worth yo money. My Fav. tracks are Thug Luv,If I Could Teach The World, Clog Up Yo Mind and family tree.A must have for bone fans.

Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite recordings ever.......2007-06-08
Elly Ameling is in glorious voice, and Demus's instrument here is fortepiano, which suits the music exquisitely. Der Hirt auf dem Felsen alone is worth the price, but all the Schubert and Schumann songs are well chosen. I'm so happy that this 1965 performance is available on CD.
wonderful.......2007-03-21
I also owned this on vinyl and have wonderful memories of this perfect blend of voice, clarinet and piano. Truly haunting melodies and the greatest musical integrity. Can't wait to get this one next month!
Truthful & Sincere Singing.......2006-11-25
Ameling's reading of Schumann and Schubert Lieder is sincere and noble, at times even awe-inspiring. There's always something genuinely beautiful, a sense of respect for music itself, when she sings with her etherial yet warm voice.
The sublimity of "Mein schonster Stern" only makes this CD worth purchasing. Her Schumann recordings are so scarce now that it is joy to find 19 Schumann Lieder both well known and obscure gems on this disc. Accompanied by an original master piano of Schubert's days. Recorded in 1965/67.
Beautiful.......2006-11-11
What a gorgeous voice! It's a true delight to listen to this set.
More than just a pretty voice ..........2006-09-17
It is tempting to dismiss Ameling as a "pretty voice" and reach for Elisabeth Schwarzkopf instead, as a previous reviewer suggests. Ameling's interpretations place a premium on simplicity and directness - two traits that are often undervalued. To my ears, however, Ameling's self-effacing approach is ideally suited to lieder performance. Schwarzkopf's recording with Edwin Fischer on EMI, while admirable in its own way, is too fussy for my tastes. Take, for example, the rendition of "Im Fruehling" by each singer: where others find Schwarzkopf to be intense and dramatic, I find her to be mannered and melodramatic. Ameling's version strikes closer to the heart and shows greater insight and intellect, in my view. Note: on this CD, Ameling's ravishing voice is at its peak.

Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Sirens, industrial noise, and ultra-intense vocals from singer-programmer-guitarist Martin Cock kick off The War of Art's aptly titled opening cut, "A Violent Reaction," and from there this 16-cut debut serves up more heavy nu metal bolstered with intelligent, disturbing lyrics. Like Slipknot, Mudvayne, Slayer, and other doomsayers, this seven-piece lineup's severe musical and lyrical take on modern society is more for moshing than humming, though songs like the surprisingly melodic and dynamic "Just So You Know," the spooky "Fall," and "Effigy 23" break up the grind of songs like "Seamless" and the pounding speed-metal onslaught of "Americ*** Evolving into Useless Psychic Garbage." Troubled teen types will likely worship AHC's deftly produced (by Rick Rubin), well-conceived, and fully realized songs and approach. The attention and care AHC put into the songs is evident. --Katherine Turman
Customer Reviews:
The loudest band I have ever heard. Period........2007-04-13
These guys are awesome live. If you think you know what loud is, wait til you get a chance to see them. My ears rang for days afterward. And that is a good thing, because their music should be played as loud as possible. I've seen them twice, once with Fear Factory, and once with Slipknot. They blew them both away. I thought the buildings would collapse. Paint chips were falling off the ceiling. Anyway, if you like extreme music, you'll do well to give these guys a shot. Lots of great songs with brutally heavy verses and some more melodic choruses.
As intense as industrial metal gets.......2006-04-25
American Head Charge's 2001 debut is one very intense album. Before I discovered death metal, this was, for a long time, the heaviest C.D. I owned. There are moments of relief (like the slow, cool piano keys on "Sung For The Suspect"), but most of "The War Of Art" is a brutal, visceral, relentless onslaught. This Minnesota-based seven piece cram immense screams, distorted, pounding guitars, and frenetic drumming into nearly every song. "Pushing The Envelope" and "Never Got Caught" have pummeling beats and vocals which build from a spoken word to a visceral yell. Elsewhere, "Just So You Know," has thunderous guitar noise, and "Seamless" is backed by rhythmic, cascading, punching power chords. Track nine, "Americ*** Evolving Into Useless Psychic Garbage," is my personal favorite song on here. Its rapid, amp-destroying riffs make it the fastest and heaviest song on this disc. The last three songs worth mentioning are the pounding "Breathe In Bleed Out," the catchy, churning "Reach And Touch," and the machine gun riffs on "All Wrapped Up." In conclusion, "The War Of Art" is one very arresting debut which is recommended to everybody who is all Slipknot and Mudvayne fans. You should also really enjoy it if commanding, in-your-face, heavy, heavy metal is your cup of tea.
Follow me now and I will drown you.......2006-01-12
When I first heard American Head Charge the song was Loyalty, from The Feeding. I quickly picked up that CD and pretty much loved it, but I kept hearing references to The War Of Art being even better. The Feeding, for me, was a great find, so for them to be able to top the intesity and overall mood of that CD, I didn't think would be easily done. After my first listen I was definitely impressed, but it wasn't at all what I was expecting. Needless to say, The War Of Art is one of those albums that takes a while to wear on you. One thing you're bound to notice is that this record feels complete. Each and every song feels complete, they don't seem short changed at all. This CD also displays much better singing than The Feeding did. Take Pushing The Envelope, that's one of the best songs to hear Martin's vocal abilities. The band also sounds a lot better on this release, they sound tighter, with more aggression. So yeah, this is light years better than The Feeding in every sense.
A Violent Reaction will be an immediate favorite to anyone who listens to it. The screaming is intense, the basic riff is great, and the use of sirens was a nice touch. Pushing The Envelope, like I said, displays the vocal abilities of Martin very nicely. The chorus and bridge is where you hear the most potential in the band. I absolutely love the opening line to Never Get Caught, it's hilarious. Despite the funny bit, the song is unrelenting with a simple yet effective chorus. Just So You Know seems to be a lot of people's favorite track offered, while yes, it's a great song, it's not the best. To hear a song mainly singing is nice though, I'll say that. Seamless has a good flow from verses to chorus which always equals a good outcome. Effigy has a slower feel to it but the riff is awesome and has some interesting vocals so it's worth a listen. If you wanna hear one of the heaviest songs on here it's sure to be Americ*** Evolving Into Useless Psychic Garbage. Anything you could gather from the title is what you'll get upon hearing it. Distorted vocals, insanely heavy beats, everything you're sure to love. Breathe In, Bleed out is another track that's mainly singing but has a nice beat. Fall is my favorite American Head Charge song, period. It has, by far, the best beat they've ever put out and the song just builds to an insanely intense ending. The only thing I could say bad about this song is that it's not long enough, but it is. Nothing Gets Nothing, the last track, is a great way to end. They utilize the slow verses/heavy choruses perfectly and have very good lyrics. No complaints here.
My favorite songs are A Violent Reaction, Pushing The Envelope, Never Get Caugh, Seamless, and Fall. I'm convinced that there's no way American Head Charge will ever top this release, I mean it's got everything, heaviness, melody, great lyrics, great vocals, everything any music fan is sure to enjoy. It only helps that the CD feels complete when the last song finishes up. I also don't think there's any way the band could've sacrificed any song on here and still have the record have the feel it does. Each song, good or bad, is pivitol to the outcome of the CD, and that's a feat in itself.
An amazing album from a great band........2005-12-08
About a year ago my friend told me that American Head Charge (a band I had never even heard of) was doing a show at First Ave. in Minneapolis in a couple weeks with a few local bands. He gave me a copy of The War of Art and, not thinking much of it, I only listened to it once or twice and not even all the way through. After seeing them live for the first time I was blown away. The next day I listened to the cd again, which blew me away as well. I don't know if I was even really listening to it before or what. Anyway, this is one amazing album from a great band, I went out and bought it for myself only a week later and it's still a cd I listen to at least once every week. Anyone who likes any kind of rock or metal music should buy this cd.
AWESOME!!.......2005-10-17
This band never ceases to amaze me...i've seen them live twice and they're incredible, and they do the same on CD. Definately a band everyone should check out. Good sound all around, unique, heavy, just all around amazing.

Forget Fear, let's get up & DANCE!.......2006-11-20
A friend bought this for me for my birthday, as I was such a fan of the Orson Welles version. I really liked the music, continually interrupted by Burton's trillingly-told tale of an extraterrestrial invasion. Burton made it sound as though he was inviting old friends over for tea. Nice musical take on the tale, but for my money, the Orson Welles version makes me scared - this one just makes me want to boogie down!

Like another reviewer, I dug out my vinyl and copied it over to my computer after seeing the Speilberg movie. I remembered how much I liked the album as I heard the opening bars again. But then.....disco hell takes over. The basic musical theme is great, Richard Burton really brings the story to life, but the constant disco beat really dates it. Maybe the remixes get rid of the disco beat??
Great!!!.......2005-12-16
Plot:
Martians invade late 19century England shown through the eyes of a journalist.
THE GOOD
This is without a shadow of a doubt the best adaptation of War of the Worlds. It captures the spirit and the letter of the book perfectly, the music sets the mood for each part. And who would've thought it? I mean, if anything WOTW's wouldn't at first come off as something that would lend itself to a musical but as I said, no other adaptation has come this close(especially not that bloated effects, no substance Spielburg film which is more a Tom Cruise movie than a WOTW film). WOTW's is part science fiction, but also part horror as well and this captures it, it's genuinely scary at times. It also improves a couple of areas from the novel, the intro of the artillerman and the journalists first sighting of the tripods, changing the order in which these two happen add more punch.
THE BAD
Just a minor thing, the journalist is basically sidelined for a bulk of disc2. The two longest tracks(Spirit of Man and Brave New World) he's hardly present during. It really isn't until Dead London that he's back front and center again.
THE UGLY
That that scream at the beginning of Red Weed part2 is without a doubt the most disturbing scream I have ever heard.
Timeless Piece of Work!!.......2005-09-11
I remember as a kid hearing this score for the first time on the radio(Halloween Eve)and running out to purchase the audio cassette the next day.My original tape was lost numerous moves ago and I was happy to see it being available on CD.The narration runs a chill through you.The musical score is timeless. Give this one a listen. You will not be disappointed.
One of the late 70's greats.......2005-08-26
The mid to late 70's was a bit of a wasteland for rock/pop music. The 60's acid rush was dieing (as were most of it's musicians) and FM album radio was just appearing. I spent a lot of the 70's exploring country but ran across Rick Wakeman my freshman year of college. Mike Oldfield had one good album but disappeared afterwards. The Cosmic Cowboy thing came & went. And as I left college to enter military service this hauntingly electric musical of an old Sci-Fi classic appears. With Richard Burton's incredible voice supplying the narration, it was a lance to use against the KISS crowd and the impending rise of disco. As a GI, I had lots of disposable income and much of it went for vinyl, 8-track and that new media, cassettes. I still have the original vinyl 2 disc set and play it regularly (and record it onto more disposable media).
This album was the key that lead me to the Moody Blues and later Pink Floyd. Some of the sounds effects today to seem a bit corny and The 70's sound technology is plainly evident. The 2nd half is much the weaker. But this was a crossroads between the orchestral rock of the Moody Blues and the pure electronic wonderlands of Tangerine Dream and Enigma.
To me it will always be a 70's classic.

A Valiant Try.......2000-05-10
Dame Janet is clearly the greatest postwar mezzo-soprano the British isles have ever produced. She had just about everything one could wish for in a singer: taste, sensitivity, passion, nuance, acting ability, superb vocal control, flexibility, an instantly recognizable timbre, and a dedication to championing lesser known works. She is the very definition of the serious-minded, committed artist who luckily also had great natural ability. She performs at her usual unassailable standards on this recording but somehow things don't add up to much. Perhaps the choice of material was to blame. The Argento songs are of that modern, atonal variety that, with the exception of a few original bars, sound pretty much like every other modern, atonal piece you've ever heard. And their straightforward passions don't evoke the cerebral, luminous Virginia Woolf at all (although, the liner notes indicate that the composer sought to exempt himself from criticism by claiming that he intended not to evoke Woolf specifically but suffering womankind in general). The Wolf Spanish lieder are instantly forgettable (he's one composer, along with Brahms, whose perhaps too subtle charms I have long been deaf to). Things perk up with the concluding French airs, but the Argento songs must have left an unpleasant residue because Baker is here uncharacteristically heavy and emphatic where she should be light and elliptical. By comparison, Regine Crespin's recording of Apres un Reve is appropriately dreamily sensuous whereas Baker's here is a tad emotionally overwrought and puritannical, as if the song were about Dido or Mary Stuart's dream. There's a currently unavailable recording of Baker singing Ravel, Chausson, and Delage that is one of the best things she's ever done, full of light arabesques and the right amount of French ivresse. Until that recording becomes available, I would not suggest this as a viable alternative.
Miraculous.......2000-03-30
Obviously the art songs are all at the superior level you expect from Dame Janet, but you will be blown away by the Argento. A stunning miracle of breath, technique, dramatic expressiveness, and emotional force. And it was recorded live- few other singers would dare these feats of phrasing in a studio, let alone in front of an audience. Don't worry that it's a live recording- the audience is utterly under Dame Janet's spell; it may sound cliched, but time absolutely stops while she is singing.
A humbling experience for anyone who deludes him/herself that he/she is a singer-- but this is a MUST MUST MUST have!

While for many, the War of the Worlds remastered double CD and 48 page booklet set will provide enough prog rock fun, true aficionados will be filled with intergalactic glee when they see how many goodies accompany the collector's edition--a whopping seven CDs that start with the two remastered discs, then disc 3, which contains the best club/DJ remixes sampled from the original recording (including N-Trance's club-y version of the hit "Forever Autumn" and a take on "Brave New World" from famed house producer/DJ Todd Terry. Discs 4 through 6 deserve awards for unprecedented attention to fandom: three full CDs of outtakes, ranging from the original 1975 radio commercial, to acoustic demos of songs, to an additional 37 minutes of previously unheard Richard Burton narrative. Many of the best add-ons, however, exist on disc 7, a 92-minute DVD documentary featuring "The Making of" as well as a full album deconstruction, narrated by Jeff Wayne himself. The whole shebang is packaged in a hardcover 76-page book which features a written history, HG Wells' bio, and a plethora of full-color artwork. --Denise Sheppard

Couldn't be happier!!!!.......2006-03-15
My husband has been looking for this ALBUM for a very long time. When I found it on line at Amazon I immediately ordered two copies. One for my husband and one for my son.. They couldn't have been happier and are still raving about the set.
Musical Masterpiece.......2006-02-24
Jeff Wayne's musical version of the War of the Worlds is an all time classic.
If you don't own it, you're missing out on part of music history the likes of which will never be repeated!
Good Music Lasts Forever.......2006-02-20
Get immersed into the world of HG Wells' novel War of the Worlds with Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the War of the Worlds. Originally released in 1978, Jeff's music has had many fans and has grown to become a classic. Now a whole new generation will be exposed to this galactic experience. And they will be pleasantly surprised at how quickly the music will pull them into the story a create a whole new world from HG Wells words.
At times the music seems a little dated [at one point it is very reminiscent of Logan's Run or the disco scenes from Buck Roger's in the 25th Century], but that feeling quickly disappears as one becomes so engulfed in the music and what it is telling us above and beyond the words of the narration.
Fans of the both the book and films will find this to be a remarkable addition to the entire War of the Worlds experience.
One of the best albums of all time.......2006-02-19
The original concept album itself is a stunner, and this box set is a wonderful toy for the serious fan. The alternate version of songs and outtakes, in addition to the beautiful coffee table book, make a second (or third or fourth...) purchase worth it. The musicianship, the composition, and the performances are all first rate. I have loved this album for 25 years, and this new version only makes me love it more.
Awesome music in an eloquent package...a million stars!!!.......2006-01-23
Over 25 years ago, I received the 12" double vinyl LP version of "Jeff Wayne's Musical Version Of The War Of The Worlds" as a gift from my brother (a Moody Blues fan), and I can say that this is one of my personal treasures. I was immediately blown away by the illustrated cover and the booklet that offered more illustrations and the biographies of all involved. Two of my all-time favorite entertainers were showcased, Welsh actor Richard Burton and Irish rock legend Phil Lynott. The music was staggering in its brilliance, and even then the music lept out of the speakers. Over the years, I reinvested several times (cassette, the "dub" cds, the previous 2cd reissue), and made this masterpiece my gift-of-choice to favorite friends and relatives until cd copies became too hard to find.
The deal with "collector's editions" is that you should get improved production and increased clarity that is noticeable to even the untrained ear; attention to detail in the packaging should then be second only to the digitally remastered sound quality on the CD's. Here, then, is a lavish, carefully assembled
set for those who basically worship the ground Jeff Wayne and his musical collaborators walk on. The 12" hardbound cover is a large size picture book, not some lump of paper wedged into a digipack, with beautiful reproductions of the original illustrations, new illustrations, and updated bios of the artists (some, including Burton and Lynott, have passed away).
If you are unfamiliar with this extremely well-conceived collection of music, you should first understand that this has to be in any serious rock library. As far as renditions (movie, musical, or written) of this H. G. Wells science fiction classic are concerned, I believe this one best conveys the very primitive yet real sense of impending doom for a self-assured species, largely due to Burton's masculine but worried narrative tone. The music is awesome, jaw-dropping, and mind-bending. The description of the spaceship's opening ("2 feet of shining screw projected, when ,suddenly, the lid fell off....a huge rounded bulk, larger than a bear, rose up slowly, glistening like wet leather...the clumsy body heaved and pulsated") set to scorching guitar riffs (before "an invisible ray of heat leapt from man to man") is my own personal highlight.
For those who know the music, this treatment of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version Of The War Of The Worlds is like the "director's cut" of a great film you've already seen. Every fan feature imaginable is here, sounds much better than ever, and includes every alternate take, outtakes, snippets of foreign language adaptations, and even some recording room conversations. The DVD hosted by Jeff Wayne himself is the Holy Grail, and could not have been done better.
This is pure Heaven for those of us who know the music, and worth every penny. I've got to thank my little brother again for turning me on to this so many years ago.

Customer Reviews:
A Purcell Sampler, or a Greatest Hits disk, if you prefer........2006-02-05
This is a compilation disk of Greatest Hits, as it were, of Henry Purcell recorded by various artists from 1953 (the Alfred Deller track) through the 1970s through 1994. The point of the disk was part of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the much to early death of this great composer and one of the great geniuses of music that England or Britain has ever produced. I have always been a devotee of his music and absolutely adore the way he set English. It is absolutely unique to him and so full of wonderful effects that create a greater whole than the music or words alone.
1995 was a year when we got to revel in everything Purcell. I was able to see a very delightful staging of "The Indian Queene" in London at the Barbican. It had narration, dancing, the singing, and wonderful playing. At the other portion of the concert, I enjoyed a performance of "Come, Ye Sons of Art" and other works by Hogwood et al. I was hoping to hear Kirkby, and she was billed. However, she was ill. Catherine Bott did a fine job as did John Bowman (both on this disk). Another counter-tenor I was so impressed with was Robin Blaze. I haven't heard much of him since, but he was terrific that night.
There are selections from his works for stage such as "King Arthur", "The Fairy Queen", Did and Aneas, and more. The disk also provides a selection of instrumental works, some sacred selections, and all the works are a delight. The track of "Come, Ye Sons of Art" is from 1953 and recorded by Alfred Deller. If you love the movement of historically informed performance, you do owe some debt to Deller. He was an early reviver of the counter-tenor voice and trying to create a style of performance that might be more appropriate and true to the music of earlier times. He helped bring about new interest in madricals, and other early music forms.
That Emma Kirkby sings on the disk is, of course, a delight for me. I have been captivated by her singing since I first heard her live in December 1980. We also get to delight in the singing of soprano Catherine Bott and counter-tenor John Bowman. All are led by the great Christopher Hogwood (except for the Deller track, obviously).
