4 out of 5 stars crunchy, catchy, and clever.......2004-12-22

This album is a pure Fender assault, with catchy hooks and clever, slightly devious lyrics ("When I see your best friend, it feels like an eaarthquake" for example).
It's like plain old loud skatepunk music, only a click smarter and funnier. I've had this CD for many years and it still gives me a grin whenever I play it.
The second "Too Slow" on the track list is really an uncredited cover of the Circle Jerks' "Red Tape". It's hard to imagine but Olivelawn's cover is actually a bit faster.
If you like clever, loud, aggressive guitar rock, give this one a spin. If you like Olivelawn, you should check out Fluf. It's the phoenix that rose from the ashes of Olivelawn's demise, and they rock like hell, too.

4 out of 5 stars Those Who Don't Understand.......2005-06-04

Visionaries are Los Angeles Underground Hip-Hop Heroes. They've been together for the past 10 years touring the world independently releasing records on their self-owned label, Up Above Records, which now distributes ALL of Jurassic 5 vinyl worldwide, Living Legends vinyl worldwide, amongst signing respected artists Kev Brown, DJ Numark of Jurassic 5, and releasing solo albums from Visionaries members LMNO, SonGodSuns aka 2Mex, Writer's Block, KeyKool & Rhettmatic (Beat Junkies).

Visionaries stand for love, truth and humanity, and their cult-type following has amassed due to their positive outlook, work ethic and talents. They've toured with Jurassic 5, Xzibit, and performed at concerts opening for Linkin Park, Common, Wu-Tang Clan, Mos Def...to name a few.

1 out of 5 stars Not a very good call from all you reviewers........2004-08-30

I really don't know why everyone is drooling over this album, it sucks. The beats are mediocre at best and the lyrics are garbage. I mean, didn't anyone at least go to a lyrics site and read the rhymes? They don't make any sense. But that's not why i'm mad. Kool Keith and MF Doom also say stuff that doesn't make a lot of sense, but they at least have a sense of humor about it. They put energy into it, the're own twist if you call it. But the visionaries sound SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BOOOOOOOOORIIIIIIIIINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!! DOESN'T ANYONE NOTICE, OR DOESN'T ANYONE CARE?????!!!!! I mean c'mon, i'd get better enthusiasm listening to my dead great-grandmother rap. They put too much emphasis on words, sounding them out like we the listeners were in preschool. And the boring tone that their voices have doesn't help any either. Now being a lyricist myself, this makes me angry. What we're these people thinking when they recorded their lyrics? Didn't someone in the studio realized they sucked? How do these people get sighned? It's beyond me, but just between us, I slept through the whole album. The beats are too slow and boring, with no kick at all and a usual high-hat tapping monotonously in the background; and the lyrics are boring, but i've already explained that. Luckily I burned it instead of buying it but I wouldn't even suggest you do that. Just steer clear of all things visionary.

2 out of 5 stars zzzzzzz, huh? oh, there's music playing. 1.5 stars.......2002-10-24

All of my ratings are from 1-10

Recording:5 As with most indie albums, they don't spend a lot of money on the quality of the recording. Therefore the album suffers in every aspect as a result... Mixing and Mastering need help, it all sounds mushy.

Beats:5 Maybe half the songs have decent beats, but there isn't one solid bassline on this entire CD. I mean the kind of bassline that makes the 15's go thump, and gets the neck moving. Not one. Again, I believe that a better recording would make my rating go up significantly in this category.

Rhymes:4 Maybe if they had some better beats they could put together some better rhyme flows... Content is better than some, but there's no punch and not a whole lot of musical quality to the flow. Bad recording or not, bad beats or not,....

The bad songs are instantly skipped in your CD player, the other half are good enough I suppose, but all I can think of when I listen to this CD is how boring it is. Shouldn't music evoke some type of emotion when you hear it? I don't even nod my head. I don't dole out hard earned money for an amateur CD, bring on the professionals. Take my [$] and drop it into studio time, but before you go, practice, practice, practice.

5 out of 5 stars Hip-Hop the way it should be!.......2002-05-25

Don't sleep. Hip-Hop in it purest form! If you're into stuff like Dilated, J5, SOB, Lexicon, then you're sure to like this CD. Big ups to Key-Kool......

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first one!.......2001-10-17

this album was o.k. i guess. the first one was mind blowing lyricism. they had a linguistic lingo that amused everyone and they didn't express one bad word!this second album was kind of good but some songs were not reaching the soul.

5 out of 5 stars Rob Costlow Solo Piano.......2005-06-26

I too immediately bought Rob Costlow's 2 CD's after hearing his music played on Adam Curry's Daily Source Code. I also immediately emailed Rob from his website suggesting he start his own podcast and he quickly emailed me back. I been doing my own podcast for about six months and Rob immediately agreed to a telephone interview. The direct link to the MP3 file interview with Rob Costlow is:

Rob's music is excellent and I'm really looking forward to receiving his CD's and to his future recordings. If you like George Winston, you will love Rob Costlow.

5 out of 5 stars Rob Costlow is an Amazing Talent!.......2005-06-20

I discovered Rob's music after hearing the song "I Do" on "The Daily Source Code" podcast. I quickly went out and bought "Sophomore Jinx". After listening to the whole album I got back on the web and bought "Woods of Chaos" as well. Rob's work has a very unique style to it. I highly recommend that you check out www.robcostlow.com and listen to the streams that are on his site. If you like solo piano tracks, Rob Costlow is one of the most talented pianists that I have heard in a long time. A definite five out of five very big stars!
