Album Description

Front Line Assembly reclaimed its throne last year with the release of "Artificial Soldier" and a world tour. Not wanting to rest on their laurels, the band is prepping for a second assault. "Fallout" features three new tracks and nine remixes and has been deemed to cause exhaustion from excessive dancing, hearing loss from listening to it too loud, and vertigo from its mind-blowing musical sequences.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Armageddon definitely steals the show on this one!.......2007-07-10

FLA has always included some good surprises on their singles, as well as their remix albums. Fallout is undeniably no exception, spanning over 10 tracks while featuring three brand new songs and several remixes for Artificial Soldier. Sadly however, Fallout is not without its flaws. While it does enter the record arena with copious offerings, some of the offerings end up sounding hollow and rushed. But what Fallout does have to offer that is worthwhile, quickly reassures the listener that FLA is still ready to hammer out an industrial masterpiece "in between" albums.

Armageddon could easily be said to the centerpiece of Fallout, and perhaps the main reason to justify buying the release. The sound of the song could be summed up as "very aggressive German Electro." The sound resembles that of a band such as E-Craft, but with FLA's own take on the genre. The songs lyrics are nothing special, since they consist of Bill Leeb's usual attempt at creating a rhyme scheme (it is interesting though that he threw in some of his native German language lyrics.) The sound on the song is what really makes it worth a listen. Armageddon features a full on grinding guitar assault mixed with some of the most aggressive synth work that Leeb has done in ages. It also has Leeb using much harsher vocal distortion than he has used in the past few years. All of the aforementioned culminates in one of the most delightful surprises that FLA has yet to produce since the song Anti (on the Maniacal single)!

While Armageddon is reason enough to buy the album, the other two new tracks, Electric Dreams and Unconscious do well on their own. Electric Dreams sounds like a song that could have belonged on either Implode or Epitaph, but its usage of electronics makes it more easily fitting for the Artificial Soldier era. Unconscious is also decent in its own right, but it's not as great of an instrumental/electronic landscape as Anti or Disseminate. Still, it captures a nice face paced EBM/cybernetic feel that FLA doesn't seem to really explore very often in this day and age.

As for the remixes on Fallout, listeners will most likely find half of them to be good while the other half will sound, as previously mentioned, rushed and hollow sounding. The most well thought out and produced remixes would be DJ(?) Acucrack's remix of Buried Alive, J. Inkel's remix of Social Enemy, Greg Reely's remix of Lowlife and FLA's own remix of Unleashed. Greg Reely especially does the listener a major service by taking Lowlife one-step further and "improves it" by adding onto Bill Leeb's vocal distortion and polishing up various parts of the track to give it and even more slick and powerful electronic sound. On the other hand, DJ(?) Acucrack's remix of Buried Alive is a welcome attempt at building on the song's drum and bass feel. Unfortunately, the song gets lost at certain parts due to losing momentum and seemingly dabbling around in experimentation. Still, the song is a valiant attempt at taking FLA and bringing them one step closer to the D&B genre.

Despite having a slew of unimpressive remixes, Fallout manages to come out ahead of the rest of many releases this year by offering up both some incredible takes on previous FLA tracks and some great new material. It is slightly disappointing due to the boring remixes but it is still very worth the price of admission for the new tracks, and if only one, definitely Armageddon.

5 out of 5 stars worth it just for the b-sides.......2007-06-20

the remixes are nice, but the unreleased tracks are what really pay for the cd. the first, electric dreams, is sort of a simple/implode sounding song. it's not as layered as a lot of the stuff on artificial soldier, but the verse synth works well enough on it's own. and +1 for the robot voice. secondly, armageddon, is almost a millennium/hard wired era song. live drums and live guitar. really in your face. lastly, unconscious, is an instrumental that kind of sounds like implode synth meets epitaph drum programming.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad..........2007-06-12

I'm not very in the know about this type of music, as my first love is Metal and Hard rock. But I enjoy other types of music as well such as electronica and dance music. This Cd has some good music but I was really looking for a heavier driving rhythym than I find here. Still, it's worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Re-Wind was Good...This is Magnificent........2007-05-10

Artificial Soldier wasn't a groundbreaking FLA record, but it is a well-rounded output. The bonus tracks on Fallout belong on that record. The mixing quality here is remarkable and could have only been hand picked by Bleebo. It is nice to see the guys won't give up anytime soon.
Kudos.

Just as Korn spawned a plethora of like-minded brethren, the hit-making Canadian band Nickelback has produced their own offspring, which includes this talented Vancouver-based quartet. Nickelback's Chad Kroeger produced and cowrote many of the songs on this 11-song collection of tame if memorable and emotional midtempo rockers. "Wasting My Time" is at once familiar and soaring, as vocalist Dallas Smith, jangly guitars, and gentle melodies mesh to make this a poignant relationship song for fans who like their rock accessible but with an edge. Cooler and rawer are the forceful "Seize the Day," and the Pearl Jam-like "Slow Me Down." "Sick & Tired," too, has a musical tone that suits the angry lyrical perspective. --Katherine Turman

Album Description

A band that will definitely stand out among the newcomers in the Class of 2001, Default is something rare - a straight-ahead, riff-driven rock band. Default 's debut album, 'The Fallout' is a hearty, fist-in-the-air rock and roll anthem record destined to ride the airwaves of radio stations everywhere. With crisp, tight production from Rick Parasher (Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains) and Chad Kroeger (lead vocalist of Nickelback), The Fallout is set to rise far above a rock scene soiled with pimp posturing and emotional vacancy. From TVT Records.

2 out of 5 stars Sadly Disappointng.......2007-06-08

After hearing the airplay of "Wasting My Time" I thought this disc would have at least a couple songs that were comparable, but I soon found out it didnt. I truly believe that Chad Kroeger influenced this band way too much, and it wasnt a very good influence. All of their songs and discs are just not original, and are unflattering attempts at mimicking other bands styles, and fail. Like I always say, if you are going to try to be someone else, you better do it far better fashion than the original. Otherwise you are just wasting everyones time. I think the band COULD be something if they found their own direction, and let loose. But so far they havent. I give this 2 stars only for the one good song.

4 out of 5 stars Unoriginal but fun debut.......2006-04-30

Default is not unique. The singer's voice is somewhat unusual in how it sounds is moments of passion, but the music itself is pretty standard alternative rock. That doesn't stop it from being enjoyable. The Fallout is not the kind of album that will impress music snobs, but it's a solid effort that, if taken with a grain of salt, can be a fun listen.

"Sick & Tired" starts off the album with a kick, it's a pretty good rock song. It leads into two of the record's singles, "Deny" and "Wasting My Time", they're both good songs, and I particularly like "Deny"'s bridge. The next few songs are an adequate bridge to the next single, the much softer and better "Live A Lie", a different kind of song for the band and a good one. The only other song that's vivid in my mind is "Faded" with a pretty uplifting message.

Again, not much of the album is that innovative or of real significance. The band isn't too far removed from the sound of Nickelback, and that band's singer even helped write some of these tracks. But just because it doesn't do much new doesn't mean it can't be a simple pleasure to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars A Great CD.......2006-04-26

This is one of my favorite CDs. I love everything about it. I could give you a list of my favorite tracks, but that would have to include the whole CD. And Dallas Smith...his voice should be registered as a lethal weapon. Seriously...buy this. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Default wow!.......2006-02-23

I have always liked Default, but this cd rocks hardcore! Personally one of my favorites!

5 out of 5 stars Default's music doesn't fallout!.......2005-10-24

Newbies or not, Default's first release provides alternative rock with a distincly melodic edge. Echoes of Nickelback are present, but Default has their own sound, make no mistake. "Sick and Tired" is the perfect opening track, showing everything the band can do. "Deny" is an appalling track, perfectly blending soft, melodic verses with a harder chorus full of edge. The most notable track on the album, "Wasting My Time" best exemplifies the melodic, yet edgy sound lead singer Dallas Smith's vocals provide. "Slow Me Down" will have any listener singing along as soon as they know the lyrics. "One Late Night" opens acoustic and shows the softer side of what the band can do. "Seize the Day" is a track with the ever-popular theme surrounding someone else's fall from glory. Repeated lyrics fill "Somewhere" and the chords are full and strong. Pure melody and acoustics are what "Live a Lie" seems to be all about. "By Your Side" perfectly displays the simple, yet catchy alternative rock that Default, by this point in the album, seems to be very strong with. The catchy "Faded" is a track with the thought-provoking message in the lyrics, "It's not too faded." Finishing off the album is "Let You Down," a well-made track with it's fair share of hard and soft, melody and edge, bright and dark. Overall, this album is amazing, especially for a first release.

4 out of 5 stars Great EP.......2007-04-20

People seem to shun EPs as not "real" albums, but this EP knocks you upside the head. The songs are strong and vintage Shad. Seize the Calm, Will to Rebuild, and Going, Going, Gone lead the way. Carpal Tunnel puts Shad in a new form that I like. The cover songs are fun with Only Living Witness' "December" taking the cake and getting much deserved props. Haunting Me Endlessly does haunt me endlessly and is the dud of the album. Also revamped earlier work is awesome (though older version of Deadworld are better). Nice indeed.

3 out of 5 stars NOT their best album yet........2006-09-16

Is it just me, or does every CD get some Amazon reviews with words like "Best yet!" or "Best since *name of some old classic of theirs*"

This is not Shadows Fall's best. Not by a long shot. In fact, it might be their worst if you treat it like a full length album.

Just because it's not really a full length album - it's more a collection of random pieces here and there. Not really B-sides, but more sort of "Oh, yeah, here's a little more." In Effigy and Going, Going, Gone are the gems here, but aside from that, this is all very disorganized.

Of course, The War Within was one of the best metal records in a while and that's the good news - with an album as good as that was, the left-overs and "Oh, yeah, what about this..." tracks are better than they'd be otherwise.

But cut the hype. 3 stars because I keep putting the CD in to hear "In Effigy" again.

5 out of 5 stars Their best album yet, more thrash oriented too........2006-08-16

Shadows Fall have been one of my favorite bands for quite a while now, and I really enjoy listening to them alot. I bought their new album "Fallout from the War" over the weekend, and I really love it. This album is a great follow up to their previous album "The War Within", and it's more heavier and thrash oriented as well. It's also the best album they've done thus far. On this album, there are six brand new songs that were written during "The War Within" sessions, Re-recorded versions of Japanese B-sides and early songs, and some blistering covers to boot. The opening thrasher "In Effigy" immediately gets the ball rolling and the intensity never lets up from that point on. This was the first song I heard on here, and it's also my favorite song as well. Another one of my favorite songs on here "Going, Going, Gone" is an absolute in your face thrasher with merciless riffs and inhuman double bass drumming that will just beat the listener to a bloody pulp. Other songs I reall like on here include: "Will to Rebuild", "Carpal Tunnel" "Deadworld", "Haunting Me Endlessly", "December", "Mark of the Squealer", and "Seize the Calm". On this album, you've got awesome vocals from Brian Fair, smoking leads and blistering solos from lead guitarist Jon Donais, awesome heavy rhythm guitarwork from Matt Bachand, nice hearable bass lines from Paul Romanko, and of course there's that awesome double bass drumming from Jason Bittner.
Jeremy's song ratings:
1. In Effigy - 5/5 (Favorite song)
2. Will to Rebuild - 5/5
3. Haunting Me Endlessly - 5/5
4. Seize the Calm - 5/5
5. Carpal Tunnel - 5/5
6. Going, Going, Gone - 5/5
7. Deadworld - 5/5
8. This is my Own - 5/5
9. December (Only Living Witness cover) - 5/5
10. Mark of the Squealer (Leeway cover) - 5/5
11. Teasin', Pleasin' (Dangerous Toys cover) - 5/5

Overall this is a great album. If you're a fan of Shadows Fall, you must own this album. If you don't like them, that's just fine with me, I really don't care what you think. So just do yourself a big favor, buy this album now along with the new Slayer album "Christ Illusion" too. Also be sure to look out for upcoming releases by Lamb of God and Megadeth as well. HAPPY HEADBANGING!!

5 out of 5 stars Shadow's Fall : "Fallout From The War".......2006-07-29

"Fallout" is extremely heavy, and very Thrash oriented. I think it's an incredible offering. This is without question my favorite Shadow's Fall release to date as well, and it easily exceeded all expectations that I had when I purchaced it....

"The Art Of Balance" is great, and "Fallout From The War" is even better in my opinion. The songs on "Fallout" just have more hooks, and the focus on Thrash is a great direction. It shows throughout, and "Fallout" could be considered one of the best offerings Shadow's Fall has ever released. BUY IT WITH CONFIDENCE.

5 out of 5 stars Best yet!!!.......2006-07-20

This is the best album to date from Shadows Fall. I love listening to these guys. They are a very tallented bunch. I didn't think they could improve on "War Within" but they proved they have what it takes to go far and put out quality music. If you are a fan of ANY of thier other albums, get this one. You will put the others on the shelf and carry this one wherever you go.

Stained Glass 66-69, one of the better bay area bands. 2 LP's never took off, likely due to the huge number of other bands being showcased in the bay area. Saw them many times in my youth. The Whatz it club, Contentental Ballroom, Very tight band, formally known as the Trolls. Jim Mcpherson the bass player went on to play with Cooperhead after Stained Glass broke up. They sounded like a mix of Beatles-Springfield-Cream. Lot of earlier 45 stuff also on this CD. I give it high marks.

If this had track samples it would sell itself. Nothing wrong with the sound a little EQ (and selective limiting) can't improve. Puts me back about 40 years to cracking open a new Beatles record. You didn't know what you were gonna get AND you knew it was gonna be great. Thank you Al Kooper for turning me on to this.
"All I gotta say is you better get your mind made up."

5 out of 5 stars The way music was meant to be.......2007-03-08

I just got this CD today. WOW!!! What a sin that this group didn't get more recognition. As a whole, this album may just be better than anything released in the last 30 years. It's solid as a rock all the way through.

"Beatlesque" is an apt description; the album certainly makes you instantly think "Beatles". It's an awesome job by The Flame, Carl Wilson, and Steve Desper.

Listening to the album just makes me shake my head. Both in amazement for how great it is, and in sadness that nothing being recorded today even comes close.

Many thanks to the previous reviewers here who convinced me to take a chance on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars What amazing talent.......2006-11-10

A pity the talented group does'nt exist anymore. Surely a must have for any serious 'Flame' fan or 'The Flames' as we know them in the country of their birth, South Africa. Not so sure that the quality of the sound recording does the group proud. I've been fortunate in seeing the group perform live in South Africa on more than one occasion and they sure reigned supreme in their heyday. I bought the LP with the same title years ago and was struck by the group's resemblance to the now exctinct 'Fab Four' at the time. Blondie Chaplin, most successful member of the group is still performing with the 'Stones' on their recent tour. Need I say more??? Go buy the cd you won't be sorry!

3 out of 5 stars Not the reissue we hoped for.......2006-10-24

Don't get me wrong -- this is a terrific album. Produced by Carl Wilson during his creative peak, it's essential for anyone who treasures the Beach Boys' "Holland" period when Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar were in the band.

But the issue is sound quality. This isn't a digital transfer from Steve Desper's shimmering master tape, but a heavily compressed needle-drop from vinyl -- and the vinyl didn't sound that good to begin with. The Beach Boys organization, which holds the rights to this album and a never-issued follow-up, apparently thwarted earlier proposals for a legitimate release.

5 out of 5 stars The best Pop-Rock album ever recorded.......2006-09-02

OK, I'm starting with the bottom line: other than the Beatles, this is the best pop-rock recording ever made. I know it's a bold statement considering such legends as Badfinger, Big Star, Emitt Rhodes, The Raspberries, et al, but it's true. Those heavy weights all cranked out some masterpieces, but this disc is just a bit better.

When the Flame LP was first released in the fall of 1970 the immediate point of comparison was with the Beatles, which was rightly deserved. The Flame, however, didn't simply sound "Beatlesque" in the same way as Emitt Rhodes or Badfinger, but they transcend the genre by managing to exhibit the same sense of musical creativity and excitement that the Fab Four did. It was the Beatles ability to write great songs, and their sense of musical adventure and exploration, that set them apart from other pretenders to the throne. It's what sets the Flame apart as well. The songs themselves are consistently melodic, (with only "Hey Lord" being sub-par) and the arrangements evolve and progress in exciting and unexpected directions.

You'll know the Flame were on to something special from the opening bars of "See The Light", which begins with an incredibly infectious chorus that is punctuated by a George Harrisonesque guitar figure, underpinned by a wonderfully fluid McCartneyesque bass, and closes with a splendid "I Feel Fine" inspired guitar-riff coda. This track alone is worth the cost of the CD.

For me the highlight is what was originally side two of the LP (tracks 6-11 on the CD). Many of the songs are almost "mini-suites" (a la The Beatles "You Never Give Me Your Money"). The side kicks off with the rollicking guitar duel of "Get Your Mind Up" and evolves into a guitar exchange similar to "The End" on Abbey Road. Other highlights include "I'm So Happy", with it's harpsichord opening, and chiming guitar solo which is reminiscent of George Harrison's double-stop guitar figure from "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window"; the gentle "Dove", with it's lovely, classical guitar duet and strings; and "Another Day Like Heaven" which features a breathtakingly beautiful organ solo, and Leslie guitar. Incredible.

Don't be mistaken, though: the Flame do not simply ape the Beatles, instead they draw richly from the genre and present us with something entirely their own. There is more creativity on this one CD than most bands manage to produce in a lifetime.

If you enjoy melodic music full of wonderful surprises, and interesting arrangements, buy this CD. It will be the best musical investment you make for a LONG time.

    Album Description

First time on CD! This US power trio's sole album was released on both sides of the Atlantic in 1969, but sank without a trace. Equally influenced by blues, soul and acid rock, it's an enjoyable mixture of snappy hard rock songs and the lengthy ''Love Is The Word'' suite, which occupied a whole side of the original LP. Featuring backing vocals from Northern Soul legend Brenda Holloway and production by former Merry-Go-Round guitarist Bill Rinehart, it's a must for fans of Bluesy psychedelic rock. Fallout. 2006.

    5 out of 5 stars FINALLY!!!!!!.......2007-01-23

YES! I've waited a long time for this to come out on CD. Heavy psych acid rock, grinding guitars, this is the stuff folks! I originally stumbled on them many years back in the cut out bin and was blown away by their style/content. No disappointments here, buy it, you'll love it!

PS...Don't be fooled by the "other" Fields LP with the bird on it, not hardly the same group.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent Songs - a bright future.......2005-02-19

This release comes with 2 CDs, 1st a Audio CD and the 2nd a bonus DVD with live recording of Deny and Wasting My Time. The bonus features are great with a 25 min documentary on the origins of the band. Two songs became hits for Default arising from this album and they were 'Deny' and 'Let You Down'.

Quite simply this double CD release is amazing and a must buy for any fan of Nickelback and or Default. In the documentary Chad Kroeger is viewed several times and the links with Nickelback are shown. The acoustic versions of Deny and Wasting My Time are a no miss.

5 out of 5 stars Headed for the Big Time.......2003-01-01

With a mentor/producer like Chad Kroeger taking you under his belt, Default have a head start. There is no doubting the talent of Default, I really admire the no nonsense rock bands and these guys are so likeable.

I was really happy with this cd/dvd set. The cd contains 3 extra songs (Blind, Acoustic Deny, and Acoustic Wasting My Time) The DVD is really awesome, with a 25 minute movie and three videos. I think Default really has a future ahead of them in the music buisness.
