5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-03-12

I can't believe i'm about to say this but I like this more then Dr. Octagon

4 out of 5 stars Look at the year this came out..........2004-09-29

Nothing like this was really happening on this level back then. This happened before Keith was very well known, before Chino XL really struck people (as if he ever did), and before Divine Styler really found his sound. Anti Pop Consortium and Deltron 3030 were nowhere to be found. Hell, the only way-out story telling happening was from Redman (oddly enough). Given, Hive's production could stand alone without ryhmes (like a secret untapped DJ Premier level of talent), and Daddy Kev does a pretty fine job of impersonating Hive on the tracks he didn't do, but none the less...Phoenix Orion was the Mr Lif of his day: dorky story telling with a razor sharp wit hidden just under the skin (though not as socially relevent as Lif). There are moments where his talking and the over all mood mirrors Bro J and the Dark Sun Riders (which is good when it's not dicking around on it's way to the next song), but anyway...this CD is complex in it's range of ideas (which don't always work perfectly), at times slightly awkward verbally, but perfectly mood evoking musically and reasonably well designed to be an album with some vague sense of cohesion (as much as Eminem or any other post-battle type cat has ever been cohesive). If you buy this, expect it to be slightly dated compared to today's rap, but too far ahead of it's time to fit in with the rap of it's day. If you are one of those guys who loved Analog Brothers, but could do without Ice-T's leud comments in the equation, then I think there is a strong chance you might want to listen to this at least five times before you die. At times this dude even sounds like the long lost rapper "Lord Have Mercy" from Busta Rhymes Flipmode Squad. I WISH IT WAS A TREND TO SHAMELESSLY COPY THIS DUDE INSTEAD OF 2 PAC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I hope his second CD has alot more Drum-N-Bass...this one only has one part in one song). HIVE IS A GOD-LIKE PRODUCER (this is the bottom line with P.O.) AND IF YOU LIKE THIS YOU SHOULD ALREADY OWN HIVE'S DEVIOUS METHODS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars FUN HIP HOP w/o ALL THAT BRAVADO.......2004-08-26

I like this album from beginning to end. To describe this CD would be pretty easy.......it's like a comic book on CD. This guy isn't the most hardcore MC around and isn't trying to be. PHOENIX ORION puts fun and simple stories topped with catchy beats. Easily overlooked for some reason, quit ignoring this....it's worth it if you like something a little less DMX and a little more PHARCYDE.

Enter Zimulated Experiencez. An amalgamation of tales based on variety of cartoons, comic books, movie and some of Orion's very own creations. If Orion's main objective was to engage the listener, then mission accomplished. Outside the hidden track at the cd's end, you can expect mostly dark, haunting beats and yes: Birdman. The beat morphs as each story/song is being told like some action/sci-fi flick's score. However, rather than being one hour everything goes down within a span of four minutes. Zimulated feels like something outta the early 1900's, where prior to television becoming widely available to the mainstream, folks would tune in to listen to a variety of shows and stories performed by actors at the other end.

It obviously isn't for folks looking for battle, Dilated Peoples type joints. Nor is it something that you can exactly groove to. Don't get me wrong though, there are enough joints to work that neck of yours. An excellent example of this was in the suspenseful nailbiter, "Dead Men Don't Download," where Orion takes you on some vintage Humphery Bogart detective type sh!t. Its a shame that I haven't heard much from Phoenix Orion since both him and his label (Celestial) have decided to go their separate ways. I'd like to hear more of his stuff outside of Zimulated. Because here, Orion provides only a glimpse of his reggae influenced delivery but not much else -- at times he's too busy acting out the roles of his heroes and evil villans. Perhaps Orion could've invited other cats to rhyme alongside him to switch tings up a bit.

Except for the annoying screeching of Birdman, there isn't much to complain about. But personally, it just isn't my type sh!t. Overall, its a borderline 4 stars. Orion's unique approach and the production forces you into Orion's Zimulated Experiencez. Hip hop, comic book heads, sci-fi fans alike should enjoy this spaced-out, Doc Octagonesque adventure. Phoenix mangages to pull off the story that unfolds right before your ears by juggling most of the characters on his own -- however it may take several listens before you completely piece together each story.
