The Best Compilation of the Man on 2 Discs! Great Sound Quality Too!.......2006-04-21
The title very aptly describes this great classical guitar album showcasing some of the best ever works of John Williams on 2 discs. The track selections are great as they span the centuries from the Baroque greats of Bach and Vivaldi to the modern day composers such as Stanley Myers and York. John even flirts with Blues and Jazz-style pieces and they actually sound very good. In addition, they did a much better mastering job on this version than on the single disc, "Classic John Williams" album that was released a few years earlier and so the sound quality is much better. John Williams' playing is without peer and his technique is superior to the vast majority of the exponents of classical guitar that are out there. I've heard recordings of many others who have tried to play "Cavatina" for example and they have never come close to the natural and flowing version that John plays. If you are a fan of this type of music or of John Williams' work, this is the best compilation that you can get that's out there. Highly recommended!
Relaxing and Enticing to the Ear.......2006-01-26
The first song on this set is why I bought the whole album. It blows you away listening to the precise picking and the gorgeous way it is done. Not robotic like some freaks out there. This is true beautiful music. Runs together like a long summer drive in the country. It is just a perfect album to listen to at home or on the go.
A little something for everybody.......2005-06-15
First, this is gorgeous guitar playing by someone who knows what he's doing. John Williams (not to be confused by the film score composer of the same name) is a superb classical guitarist. Many of these pieces are *classical* in nature, while a few are more *popular*. Many are solo, the rest in small chamber groups. Some will get your toes tapping, some will start you daydreaming, and some will make you cry with their beauty. All of it is magnificent.

With his crystalline articulation and extraordinary rhythmic prowess, John Williams ranks among the greatest solo voices the acoustic guitar has ever known. Now, with the joyous evocations of the African guitar tradition, Williams has hit upon his most emotionally satisfying crossover recital to date. Though both chief soloist and arranger, Williams nevertheless avoids shining the spotlight on his virtuosic skills--even his solo showcase, "Masagna," places greater emphasis on the tune's folkish incantations. He allows plenty of melodic space for the likes of steel-string player John Ethridge, while guiding listeners through the idiomatic flora and fauna of the pan-African experience: from the hornpipelike airs of Madagascar ("Mitopa") and kora-styled arpeggios of Mali ("Malinke Guitars") through to intimations of South African vocal traditions with a lovely children's chorus on the anthem of the African National Congress, "Nikosi Sikelel'I Africa." Simply expressive and deeply felt, Magic Box exudes a universal vibe that transcends borders and nationalities. --Chip Stern

perhaps my favourite jw.......2004-10-20
you gotta give it to john, he tries new stuff. and traditionalists may snob his later recordings, he has a gift of bringing life to guitar music.
the repertoire is different, cute and enjoyable.
my only critisicm is that the steel string solos get a bit monotonous in some of the pieces, but this is only because its not to my taste.
Perfect for a quiet, cloudy Sunday Morning.......2003-11-16
I have Magic Box playing and a small water sculpture flowing as I type this and the combination is just about perfect. I wouldn't call myself a sophisticated listener, even though I bought my first Segovia recording as a teenager in the early 1960s and, over the years, have accumulated quite a few recording by Segovia, Isbin, Williams, Parkening, and others. I never tire of listening to these superb guitarists playing Rodrigo and Bach and the other standards but, every once in a while, it is a pleasure to hear something a little out of the ordinary. It takes a special talent for a classically trained musician to handle pop or folk material with any success - as it does for pop/folk musicians to go the other way. Williams does it with ease.
Well intended, but..........2002-12-21
Being quite close to some of the sources for some of these pieces, I was both thrilled that they had been recognized, while a bit disappointed in the actual music treatment on Magic Box, which I found rather tepid and polite compared to the originals.
Paul-Bert Rahasimanana is much better known as Rossy, and he has many albums, most available on Amazon.com. Unfortunately, the links on this page don't tell you that. I have produced him, and toured and performed with him. He's an amazing musician. I hope people take the time to listen to his music.
Another source musician, Ralanto, is on the cover of an album called Moon and the Banana Tree, a 1995 compendium of acoustic guitar players in Madagascar which I produced for Shanachie. Omby, the piece John Williams covers, is on that album, and again, I hope people will take the time to seek that album out as well. Williams recently referred to it in an interview as a real eye-opener. I wish he could have heard Resting Place of the Mists, the companion CD which is already out of print.
Africa (including Madagascar, which is more properly associated with Indian Ocean culture than with Africa) has some of the most astounding guitar players on earth. Hearing an admittedly superb classical guitarist attempt to do that material justice requires that the listener either be unaware of the source, or willing to ignore it and judge the extremely European treatment he offers, which is dramatically inside the limits of the source. With all due respects, I truly hope it will draw some folks to listen to the real thing.
lovely.......2002-11-02
Classical guitarist extraordinaire John Williams has never been afraid to set out on little side-trips, away from the mainstream of the classical guitar literature. Beyond taking part on occasion in big orchestra-backed 'pops' excursions, he has regularly immersed himself in avant-garde, jazz, and even rock projects (for example the band 'Sky'). "The Magic Box" therefore does not really represent Williams doing anything unusual for him, but it does expand his repertoire within the world of folk and international music, in this case the traditional music of Africa. I find most of this material very attractive, but somehow a little less involving than when it is played on native instrumentation (perhaps simple beauties just cannot be improved upon...). Nevertheless, as always Williams executes each item in the program with grace and understanding, and with a level of gentleness and respect that one expects from a classical musician of his calibre. Call it a worthwhile experiment--though I'm not sure I would clamor for an encore.
Expanding the Horizon.......2002-07-18
In pursuing his goal of expanding guitar music beyond the traditional Spanish repertoire, Williams and friends have produced a very enjoyable collection of African style music. The blend of percussion, bass, and wind instruments gives it even more flavor. Particularly delightful is track 3, "Maki," with Williams playing beautiful tremolo and strumming on a bright sounding requinto. Several other pieces give off a similar tropical, mellow, and happy feeling. I'm eagerly anticipating Williams' next project and where he will take us.

Powerful singer - Powerful Message.......2006-07-11
Judy Jacobs is so overlooked when it comes to contemporary Christian music. The power and sincerity of her singing really has a strong effect on me. I heard her first on TBN on tv and from then on I was hooked.
My favorites on the album are "Lord God of Abraham" and "Almighty Reigns" because they are so upbeat. But I also enjoyed "Worthy" which is a much slower tempo. The other songs are good as well.
Classic Judy Jacob styled album.......2005-12-07
If you liked Judy Jacobs past albums, you should like this one because this is a classic Judy Jacob styled album. The song that made me buy the album is "Worthy". It's a great worship song that also prays for the Presence of God to fill you. The other songs I like are the first three songs, "Lord God of Abraham", "All Mighty Reigns" and "All Belongs To You".

Undiscovered Talent.......2005-05-20
Its great to know that in an "underground" genre known as "Dance music," we can find undiscovered artists like Tina Ann. Although, I really wish that the entire music scene would snap out of the damn "Hip-Hop" era it's going through, I'm aware it`s not going to happen anytime soon. But if people would explore what other music genres have to offer, especially music with positive lyrics and actual singers that don't yell and scream obscenities, they would discover people like Tina Ann.
When I first heard Tina Ann's single "I Do" Chris "The Greek" Remix, I liked the unique and up-beat sound of the song. At first, I thought that it was Amber but to my surprise it was Tina Ann. Much of the cd sounds like a blend of Ambers old sound (before she went rock, so I hear) and a mix of Kristine W. Yet, Tina Ann has discovered a new way of making "Club" or "Dance" music by fusing a bit of progressive house and trance pop, yet the album doesn't completely sound like a repetitive club track that can become overwhelmingly cold and boring after a while. Her album sounds ready for the club scene but with an urban twist to it. Making it a solid, refreshing album on my book.
Bottom line, I think people that are into this type of music, and lets be frank, there are not many of us out there, should definitely give this album a try. Not only will you be supporting an artist in this unknown genre by the U.S. public, but you'll also be adding a compelling cd to your collection. Especially if your a fan of any of the previously mentioned women of Dance. Tina Ann offers a good dose of vocals and not to mention, heavy fast paced beats. With artists like Tina Ann, Dance music continues to live on!!!
DONT PASS THIS ONE UP.......2004-05-27
THIS IS THE BEST DANCE CD THAT HAS COME OUT IN A LONG TIME. NOT TO MENTION EVERY SONG ON THIS CD CAN STAND ALONE AS A SINGLE. FROM START TO FINISH THIS CD KEEPS YOU MOVING. THE INTRO GIVE YOU THE CHILLS. YOUVE GOTTA PICK UP THIS CD AND SUPPORT THIS TALENTED ARTIST!
Overlooked gem!.......2004-05-21
I can't believe only two other people chose to review this, which means it is not getting the exposure it deserves! This is one grand dance CD from start to finish. "Too Late" is in my top 5 dance/club hits of the past 5 years, and you get two versions on here! The JJ Flores Break Beat Mix is the better of the two, as it's closer to the original version.
"All I Need Is a Miracle" is a remake of the old Mike and Mechanics song, and once you can get the original out of your head, and concentrate on her version, it is a very nice sounding trance-like cover.
In My Dreams is probably the 2nd best song on here, after Too Late. It also has 2 versions and is one slammin' dance track! Very fast beats to keep you moving like crazy!
Highly Recommended!!
EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-03-10
The cd has so many good songs on here and many great mixes, I highly recommend this cd.
Amazing High Energy Debut!.......2003-12-15
I've been a big fan of Tina Ann since she burst on the club scene with "Don't Want Another Man". The album is packed with all her club hits and a bunch of great new tunes.
Her new version of "All I Need Is a Miracle" is one of the best songs I've heard all year. Also, "Rules of Attraction", produced by Chris Cox (of Thunderpuss) is a club smash waiting to happen. There isn't a single dud on this album!

Led by the Indefatigable Stan `the Man' Webb, a Magnificent Guitarist and Showman Who'd Copped Many of his Best Licks from the Mighty Freddie King, Chicken Shack Emerged from the Midlands in 1967 and Proceeded to Carve Out a Big Reputation on a Then-vibrant UK Blues Scene. After Several Early Brushes with Commercial Success - They Even Managed a Couple of Crossover UK Chart Records in the Late 60s - Webb Kept the Show on the Road, Despite a Baffling Array of Personnel Changes which Saw a Different Line-up on Virtually Every Tour And/Or Album. Indeed, Shack Toured and Recorded Throughout the 70s and 80s at the Rate of an Album Every 18 Months Or So, and Carved Out a Particularly Strong Following in Europe. After an Uncharacteristic Quiet Period Stan Reemerged in the 90s with (Yet) Another New Line-up, and in 1995 He Signed Shack to the Specialist Indie Blues Label, Indigo, for Whom They Cut "Stan the Man Live".

Album Description
Children's musician Chris Hamilton follows up his critically-acclaimed, kid-and-parent-loved Sticky Situations CD (2004) with Boogie Child, an all-new collection of 15 lively, original songs celebrating the sillier side of modern life for school-age kids.
Hamilton meets many families who share their hilarious anecdotes and for Boogie Child he took inspiration from those stories to create the songs "I Didn't Know" & "Mamma's In the Minivan". He also finds humour in seemingly mundane events for songs like "The Worst Haircut" and "The Dentist" then jumps to total silliness for songs like "Worm Germs", "Silly Songs" and "You're An Animal!", a current `hit' at his live shows. Songs like "Middle Child Blues", "Super-powered Superhero" and "Six to Eight Weeks" spring directly from Hamilton's own childhood experiences.
Without ever getting preachy, Hamilton also cleverly works in a few positive ideas about global awareness, co-operation and self-esteem in "Kids Are Kids Around the World", "Let's Build" and the title tune "Boogie Child".
Best known for his humour, offstage Hamilton takes children's music very seriously. "Kids deserve quality music and quality writing. The parents who buy my CDs should feel like that was money well spent," he says. From the rehearsals and recording to manufacturing he insists that everyone involved treat the project with the same professionalism as a recording for adults.
To that end, Hamilton has once again gathered many of his friends in the Vancouver music scene to fill out the sound for Boogie Child including musicians who have played with The Clumsy Lovers, 54-40 and The Paperboys along with the regulars from his terrific back-up group, the Sticky Jam Band. Many musicians were required for the different sounds on Boogie Child because Hamilton crosses the musical map from Rock to Funk, Blues to Punk, Bluegrass to Beatnik Jazz, Ska and even Disco!

Entertaining for kids and adults.......2007-01-12
Clever, very funny lyrics and catchy tunes. My seven year-old loves this album so much we had to replace a lost copy. I think my husband and I like it even better than she does, since we walk around singing the songs (and not for the usual reason: that annoying children's tunes can get stuck in one's head until one has the overwhelming desire to bang said noggin against the nearest wall). Nope, this is just plain fun music for any age.
Sticky Situations.......2005-04-02
My daughter Cassidy and I both love this CD Chris is an excellent musician. This CD gets played regularly and every mom that I know when they hear it want a copy. The songs are fun and the kids can relate to the situations in the songs. This is a CD that every parent should have in their collection and if you ever get the chance to see Chris perform live you should do it he is an amazing live performer.
Groovy Greats.......2005-01-13
My daughters and myself love dancing to the groovy tunes of STICKY SITUATIONS. We dance in the kitchen to the tunes of "Walking in the Swamp", "The Time I sneezed In French Class", &"Lily, What's in your Hair?",while multi-tasking cooking and baking! Our family relates to songs like
<"The day I Tried to Shampoo Rover" & "The Worst Place to Be" Thank you for enriching our daily lives with creative songs that really STICK!!!
What an exellent CD!.......2004-11-26
My son and daughter both love this music. They sing and dance with it at home. The fabulous CD is one of their favorite ones while we are in the car. That is more than ok for mommy as well! It makes you feel happy. My kids' favorite songs are the one about Lily and the Sleeping Bugs song. Actually all the songs are catchy. We love the whole CD!
Can't get enough!.......2004-07-08
Every since my daughter first heard Chris Hamilton play she was addicted. She listens to his CD all the time. She just had to take her cousin to his concert and now the two of them dance and sing to his CD all the time. His songs are great and have kids of all ages laughing and singing along. We hope that there is a music video comming out soon too!
Keep it comming Chris!
