The third installment of Guru's celebrated Jazzmatazz series is all about soul. With names like Erykah Badu, Macy Gray, Amel Larrieux, and Les Nubians on board this time around, Streetsoul is a perfect, breezy soundtrack for all seasons. Lyrically, Guru departs from the streetwise righteousness of Gang Starr and instead focuses on affairs of the heart. The Roots lend a typically sparse beat and rhymes to "Lift Your Fist," and the old-school heads will appreciate guest spots by Herbie Hancock and Isaac Hayes. A bouncy flurry of strings and the gorgeous Angie Stone hook of "Keep Your Worries" ensures Streetsoul some crossover success. Check the opener, "Certified," for the versatile stylings of newcomer Bilal and a funky, feel-good beat from Slum Village minimalist Jay Dee. Though the production occasionally strays into more generic territory, there's enough of interest here for even the most dedicatedly anti-jiggy. --Hua Hsu

A stunning eclectic mix!.......2005-09-06

This CD is my introduction to Guru. I hadn't heard either of the 2 previous CDs in his Jazzmatazz series so I was able to judge this CD for what it is.

And what it is, is great music! Hip hop with neo soul leanings and jazz flourishes in bits. Featuring a stellar collection of collaborators, each bringing something to their song and not just tacked on. Most co wrote the tracks they featured on. It made an impressive #32 on the billboard album charts.

There's the bouncy, airy, catchy `Keep your head' featuring joyous horns and Angie Stone singing the chorus.

There's the swinging jazz of `Plenty' featuring Erykah Badu's ethereal vocals against a big band to neo soul rhythm. With plenty of bass!

`Who's there' features Cameroonian sibling duo Les Nubians singing in French to a lush, sparse, dramatic backdrop. With lyrics about a street hustler with no hope in life. Who's there for my people in the streets/Who's there for my people who got nothing to eat. Excellent!

`All I said' is about a tiff with his girl over his not being able to talk to or be with her all the time because of work. Macy Gray delivers the chorus in a smoky low key delivery.

Kelis features on the quirky sounding `Supa Love' which sounds like it could have come off one of her albums. A slowed down, typical sparse and tight Neptunes production, with delicate guitar strumming in the chorus.

Lest you think it's all a ladies affair, `Night love' features Isaac Hayes. A retro sounding Shaft-like dramatic piece with the great man (Hayes) providing some narration in his deep bass voice.

`Timeless' features Herbie Hancock and is a dark sounding, mid tempo number with piano tinklings and a tight bass line.

`Mashin' up da world' features JR Reid providing some ragga rapping and an uncredited sample of Michael Jackson's `Earth song'. An angry protest!

`Certified' featuring Bilal and Slum Village is an excellent bubbly number. Has to be heard to be believed.

Other standouts are the fight for your rights anthem `Lift your fist' with The Roots, `No More' with Craig David and `Guidance' with Amel Larrieaux.

An outstanding CD with a very wide reach, which should appeal to fans of R&B and Hip hop.

Guru's Jazzmatazz Streetsoul.......2004-06-24

This album upset some Jazzmatazz fans because it sounds like hip-hop/R&B instead of jazz (with the exception of Herbie Hancock on the sharp "Timeless"). But that's why Guru also named it "Streetsoul" to show a more urban approach to this album. If you can appreciate that, there's a lot of good numbers here, including "Certified" with Bilal, "All I Said" with Macy Gray, "Keep Your Worries" with Angie Stone, "No More" with Craig David, and especially "Plenty" with Erykah Badu. His Gang Starr groupmate DJ Premier even shows up to produce "Hustlin Dayz" and "Where's My Ladiez?".

The third, and worst, of the projects.......2004-03-18

Easily the worst of the Jazzmatazz projects. Doesn't even really sound like Jazz at all, anywhere. It's more an R&B Neo-soul project.

Now if you're into that kind of thing, it's probably a good album. I found a few songs to be good but overall it's just too much of a departure from the whole concept of Jazz-meets-HipHop for me.

Guru is by far the best rapper ever.......2003-07-06

anyone who thinks guru is boring hasnt actually listened to his music very much because if you take the time to listen you will find out that he is the best. any guru cd you buy is always awesome and when you listen to guru all other music just doesnt seem good enough.

Just Too Damn Mellow.......2002-08-28

I'm down with the jazzier hybrids. I'm down with the cool guest stars. I'm down with Guru's deadpan rapping style. And I'm definitely down with Jazzmatazz Vol. I, which was plenty of good fun.

What I'm NOT down with is this album because, frankly, the rhythms are so limp. Laid back is okay once in a while but there is not one cut here that I would spin live while deejaying--it's all so damn sleepy. Nothing ever rises above midtempo at best, and the downside of having lots of "jazz" all over it is that there are no hooks--just lots of watery, bland music.

Alright I can't lie... I am really not feeling this album I bought it with high hopes but surely I was let down... Yet I have to admit the tracks "Keep Your Worries", "All I said" and "Plenty" were plenty tight... but that was only due to the featuring artists... His rap style is simple which I like but at the same time it is not advance, not very articulate and not enticiing... it doesn't pull me in with head banging lyrics, it doesn't capture me with the nicest compilation of eclectic (electric) rhythms. His style is like that of the 80's , kind of monotonous, kind of boring if you ask me... but that is my opinion don't let what I say stop you... Most people who bought this album were fans of his previous releases and dig his sytle but I can't say the same.

Shimmering soulful modern jazz hop.......2000-10-14

On the first two Jazzmatazz records Guru presented us with some first rate eclectic street jazz with beats and rhymes. This time around he dips into the well of guest star friends (Macy Gray, Roots, Herbie Hancock) to name a few. All of the tracks stand on their own as nice radio ditties but upon closer listening you will hear the hard work and thoughtfullness put into this album lyrically and musically. If you enjoyed the first two or are looking for some refreshing smart hip hop buy it now.
