Amazon.com essential recording

Simply one of the greatest live blues recordings ever. Hooker plays alone at Soledad, yet the real thrill is hearing him backed at Greenwich Village's Café Au-Go-Go in 1966 by Muddy Waters and his band, including pianist Otis Spann, unsung harmonica giant George Smith, Francis Clay on drums, and guitarists Sammy Lawhorn and Luther Johnson. All are at the height of their abilities, but it's Hooker who works like a hoodoo conjurer, making misery rain down in "Seven Days" and "When My First Wife Left Me." This August night's reading of "I'm Bad Like Jesse James" ranks among the most intimidating vocal performances ever taped. His guitar and baritone singing sink to rarely heard depths of the blues--that secret place in the music (known only to its absolute masters) where it becomes an elemental force. --Ted Drozdowski

5 out of 5 stars Hard blues True blues Live blues.......2007-01-21

John lee seemed like he had the blues his hole life.Maybe he did maybe he didn't. He played the hole blues man thing to a T. He seemed like the coolest of all cats when he was up on stage. That's because he was. The people bought it hook line and sinker as they should.I have heard, lived and felt the blues since I was 8 yrs.old. I can totally relate to what he was doing and singing about back then and now.Hookers blues and boogie music is and will always be timeless. That to me is the conection I have with him.Pure blues, no nonsense music that hits you like a ton of bricks. This CD does just that and more.

5 out of 5 stars Best Ever.......2007-01-10

If I was stranded on a deserted island and I was to have one CD this would be the one , thought that Hooker and Heat was good , this blows it away ...............

5 out of 5 stars Two Great Live Albums in One CD.......2006-10-18

This is actually two live albums combined. Cafe Go-Go finds Johnny earlier in his career and Live at Soledad prison finds Johnny mid-career right in the middle of his endless boogie phase.

Live at The Cafe Go-Go is recoreded with Muddy Waters band (Muddy always had the best bands!) including the great Otis Spann on Piano. Muddy even plays guitar on one of the tunes. Sound quality is excellent and John Live is in fine form, but a little restrain. You get the feeling the band had not played that much together. Hearing JLH with Otis Spann in keys is pretty cool however. Bad like Jesse James is one of the creepiest songs made and is made even more haunting by Spann's parse piano.

Live at Soledad prison catch John Lee is his Endless Boogie phase, which for me is where it is at. Sound quality is surprisely very good and his band, including his son John Lee Jr., are tight. Bang Bang Bang is a great jam all the way from the Motor City. This contains all but two cuts of the original Live at Soledad album. These two tunes were sung by John Lee Jr. I love how at the end of the album the prison plugs the plug on the band and it takes a while for everybody to figure out what happened.

Looking for some more great live John Lee Hooker check the live Album with Albert King (they don'y played together, but share the same CD) 'I Play the Blues for you'. For me this is some of the finest JLH caught live on tape. JLH studio album 'Never get out of these blues alive' is also another great album.

This is a great album for anyone who enjoys the blues, live blues, John Lee, or enjoys Otis Spann. Album should be the staple of any basic bblues collection. I highly recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Live John Lee..........2005-11-22

Hearing John Lee Hooker backed by the Muddy Water's band from the 1960's is a real treat. The version of "I'm Bad Like Jessie James" that opens the CD is one of the most menacing songs I've ever heard; John Lee describes in detail how he will "take care of" a former friend he took in who went around town telling everybody that he slept with John Lee's wife. This song is a perfect example of how John Lee Hooker was the personification of badass. John Lee also runs through some of his classics like "One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer" and "Bang Bang Bang Bang". I prefer the Cafe Au Go Go set to the Soledad Prison set, but both sets are worth hearing and are full of good performances from John Lee and the band. This is definitely worth getting if you are fan of John Lee Hooker or the blues.

5 out of 5 stars What an incredible man!.......2005-04-07

It's hard not to get shivers when listening to this recording. John Lee Hooker had such an incredible voice and it's as if his singing and playing encapsulates all misery imaginable. He extracted so much emotion from these songs that made me feel as though I'd actually lived the experience. It's so incredibly painful to listen to in places that I expected the heavens to open up in response. This is a man who knew what he was doing.

The band is in top form and John Lee uses them to get the crowd rocking as he works his magic. Everything is spot-on! From slow, painful numbers to upbeat, rollicking shuffles, John Lee Hooker and his band can do it all.

This is a landmark album that shows a man (and a band) at the top of their game and it's something no self-respecting blues fan should be without! You'd have to be dead not to be affected by this!

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the price.......2006-03-17

The CD is very nice and quite relaxing. However, the cost is outrageous compared to value of the CD. For the amount of money I expected much more from such a talented artist. If you are considering purchasing the CD do not pay more than $15.00 for new.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Live Album of the 90's.......2004-10-21

This the best live album that I have ever purchased and probably my favorite album ever. My complaint is, just like I read from another reviewer, this cd is too short. This is a special performance from a special musician. If you love live music this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars The New Godfather of Soul.......2004-05-06

If you are a D'Angelo fan like myself, this CD is a must-buy. Listening to D'Angelo is something more than just passing time. His songs and lyrics are timeless. Although the CD is somewhat short for its price-tag, it is worth every penny. I've never seen D'Angelo live, so this CD gave me a chance to find out if it's just the studio that makes him sound so good. Well, it's not. His raw talent shines through in every song. His soulful lyrics and soothing voice make the songs come alive. Unlike many "R&B" artists, D'Angelo exudes real emotions. You can feel it.

5 out of 5 stars Brown Sugar got me open and now I want some mo!!.......2003-01-09

I just got this CD as a present and damn if it didn't have me logging on to Amazon.com doing a search for D'Angelo and crossing my fingers hoping that there would be a new release listed for him.
I've seen "D" live more recently for the Voodoo album and he's EXCELLENT. I'm even more in awe by this live session because he was somewhat new to the scene. In my opinion the true talent of an artist is how well he or she performs live, having made that statement he's is truly talented much like Prince is so awesome live, so is Babyface, so is Me'shell NdegeOcello; get the picture. But I digress... buy this CD and I guarantee you it will stay in heavy rotation and you'll be logging onto Amazon.com hoping like I did.

5 out of 5 stars Love-test this CD tonight, it is too sexy for words!.......2002-12-08

This is CD is absolutely worth the import price tag. Do not hesitate, after all, you only live once. D'Angelo is ahead of his time, and talented beyond words. His back-up singers here (and this was recorded back in 1995) are Angie Stone and Karen Bernod, both established artists in their own right today. I can't say enough about this CD, having listened to it non-stop for a week.

Just buy it! It will tide you over until his next release.

4 out of 5 stars Live at World Cafe.......2006-11-04

Awesome! Gabe's style reminds me of both Paul McCartney and Bruce Hornsby. Easy listening and the music is exceptional.

5 out of 5 stars Gabe Dixon is crazily talented.......2006-04-10

I saw Gabe Dixon in concert and he is phenomenal. He is one of the best piano players I've heard since Billy Joel. Gabe actually played for Paul McCartney in concert, so you know he has to be good. The music is relaxing, easy to listen to and very easy to appreciate.

4 out of 5 stars Dixon didn't disappoint........2006-03-21

I heard the song "All is Well" in the commercials for 'Conviction' on NBC and didn't rest until I found it. The music is very engaging and listening to the whole CD is time well spent. It is live so that detracts - just a little. Has a similar sound to Bruce Hornsby of whom I'm a great fan. Nice little CD.

5 out of 5 stars Gabe Dixon.......2006-03-04

The guy is a super song writer/singer. Hopefully he will record a full length cd in the near future.

What a great deal! This is even better than I expected it to be. It was so nice to finally have some new GDB music to buy. Keep it coming!

"Don Cherry, more than any other artist in the jazz of his era, pioneered the music's internationalist nature that has now come to be commonly accepted as an integral part of its character. The individuality of Cherry's contribution to the history of jazz has often been unfairly obscured by his admittedly important association with the music of Ornette Coleman. While the (pocket) trumpeter's position as Coleman's front line partner in the altoist's first revolutionary quartet was indeed a major one, Cherry's role as one of the founders of the genre that is known today as `world music' is equally significant." -- Russ Musto Live performance from the legendary Café Montmartre. 4 out of 5 stars A wonderful wit..........2002-09-18

Christine Lavin gives her humerous opinions on everything from Prince Charles to office romance in this album. She shows that she has, not only a rare wit, but the intelligence to put that humor forth in a way that anyone who listens to her music will find infectuous. While there are a few slow moments on the album, her homage to bald-headed-men and her song "What Was I Thinking" make the album well worth it to add to any collection. This album will be especially loved by those who enjoy accoustic, folksey music with a message as opposed to those who like the "hip, three-minute dittys" that don't really say alot.

5 out of 5 stars fun, silly, poignant, and a great gift.......2000-10-17

Not only are Christine Lavin's lyrics brilliant & hilarious, but her melodies are catchy too. This CD is one of her very best... it captures her personality which really comes through during a live show. She definitely transcends the "folk" genre, and she has one of the cutest voices I have ever heard! I gave this CD to my mom last Christmas and then she ended up giving a copy to her sister on her birthday.

5 out of 5 stars Smart, original, different.......1999-03-16

A friend of mine left Christine Lavin's CD at my house one night, so I decided to listen to it. I have never laughed so hard in my life. In fact I'm listening to "What was I thinking right now" this is the only thing that cheers me up. I have tunred all of my friends on to her, and they thank me for telling them about it. She makes everything that you think actually make sense. Thanks Christine!

      5 out of 5 stars I love, "What was I thinking?" It's me!!!.......1999-01-06

I heard "What Was I Thinking" on the way to the hospital on New Years Day. I laughed out loud! I'm been trying to find out who sang that so I could buy it and play it for all my friends! My compliments to the artist!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, enchanting as it is funny, a wonderful album.......1998-06-30

To hear Christine Lavin sing about her life, and of the lives around her, it is like listening to yourself, thinking outloud. She captures so much of what we don't want others to know we think, and does it so elegantly. The trick to Christine's ability is her soft and gentle singing voice and subtle charm. She eases you into listening with grace and with ease, and before you know it, you have listened to the album three times over. Her songwriting is original, quirky, provicative and fun, without testing the listeners limits. She has the ability to speak with great direction and strength, and loses no one in the process. It is amazing to think that she does not have the noteriety that The Indigo Girls or Sarah Mclachlan have, because she defintley fits into that catagory of performer. Please, take my word for it, Christine Lavin will make you laugh out loud, feel deeply emotional, think heavily, and maybe even turn off your T.V. and live life with a little bit of a spring in your step, buy her albums, you will be happy you did.

5 out of 5 stars Still delivers with the best.......2006-08-02

If you talk about the 60s and 70s, I believe the two most underrated groups are Spirit and the Blues Project, both of which were very jazzy for the taste of the epoch and so much more sophisticated than the commercial music.

I bought this CD to see if I would still like it. You hear so much music from the 60s to the 90s all over the radio. Some sounds rancid and some sublime.

I loved this album when it first came out. (My friend Chris Winfield who is now an artist, turned me on to them as he did to much jazz, classical and blues.) They were among my favorite groups then and remain so.

I have to say that I loved Flute thing and a few instrumentals which are not included here but no one can perform every track in concert.

Listening now, I especially enjoy Alberta and Violets of Dawn, very poetic with that certain offness which Verlaine recommends for poetry. (I can't even recommend Verlaine so much since so many other French poets exceed him by far but he did write some amazing poems on how poetry should work.)

So, if you want pure poetry in the form of music, get this CD.

5 out of 5 stars For me, this was the first............2006-03-22

High school was ending. College beckoned. And music was about to explode: Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver, Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, The Who, Bob Dylan. For me, the first taste of it came from the Blues Project. This album, their first, was recorded live, on a four-track, and freshness, spontaneity, and sheer fun leap out from the speakers with amazing clarity all things considered. The later studio work from this group does not have the spark found in this one. If you enjoyed this compilation years ago, buy it again and you won't be disappointed - you will also enjoy the liner notes. If you have never heard it, and want to experience how a golden era of music began, get it. A treat awaits.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for the avid fan of Son House................2006-09-19

Eddie James "Son" House was born in 1902 and was one of the earliest blues musicians in the 1920's playing with Charlie Patton and even serving as an early mentor to Robert Johnson until Johnson left town and "sold his soul to the devil" for his amazing skills.

It is amazing that with such a paucity of recordings, this Baptist bluesman's status could forever be forged in the annals of American music as legendary. Son House record a mere 7 Paramount sides in 1930, some field recordings by Alan Lomax in 1941 & 1942, and some sessions in 1965 after his "rediscovery." He put the guitar down around 1942 because, as he stated in an interview in the 1960's, all of his friends were dying, from Charlie Patton to Robert Johnson......he simply thought he would be next if he kept on playing. And so he put his guitar down for 20 plus years.

Outside of the three times he officially recorded in the field or in studio sessions, there is not a lot of material for the avid fan of Son House. Luckily for us, we have recordings such as "Live at the Gaslight in 1965." He may not have the white-hot intensity of the 1930 Paramount sessions, but the intensity is there nonetheless. And we are witness to a soft spoken Son House as he talks very softly between songs.......for me, this is what I enjoy the most even though the music is fantastic. He doesn't say much, but his soft spoken words contrast starkly with his singing and presence. Listening to this album is like finding a treasure, a treasure to be savored and enjoyed partly because it is a testament to one of the all time great names in the genre of the blues. And partly because sadly, there is simply a dearth of recordings by Son House. When the audience applauds in gentle claps, you get the distinct impression that they do not know how great the figure in front of them will ultimately prove to be.

Enjoy the songs on this album.....they were made by a master who to this very day is the epitome of delta blues.

          4 1/2 stars.

Even if he hadn't influenced anyone, even if historically he was a 19 year old kid from Shirley, Long Island, even if this recording at just been waxed last night, this is good, essential blues listening, you won't want to stop listening, you wont stop seeing the scenes of the blues that the songs make, you won't stop swaying at the power and swing of his guitar playing and singing. On here, my song is Preachin the Blues. I know you will have yours.

Son House taught Robert Johnson the slide blues. Son House taught Muddy Waters. When Son House started performing at Blues festivals again in the mid 1960s, some of Muddy's younger band members would start to go off for a smoke or whatever when the old man came on stage. Muddy wouldn't let them. Muddy Waters would tell all his band members to be quiet and pay attention when the man played because even compared with Muddy, this was the real deal.

Rediscovered in Rochester, New York, relearning to play the guitar, (how this country abuses the masters that come from its people, particularly its Black people), put back on the stage by the folk revival's blues section, House made recordings that reproduced his old masterpies, with a wrier sense of meaning than before.

People outside of the blues life focus on the guitar playing or the rhythm of the singing, but where the power comes from is the feeling and the words that are put together, the life and the meaning of the blues. Son House in his youth and his old age, on this and his other sides, always gave it.

So Like Muddy Waters, I would like you to know that
Son House is the real deal.
