Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Available at retailers for about $18.......2006-12-21

Excellent collection - but there are re-sellers listed here that are selling this for as much $50 or $60. Yikes, most major retailers are selling this complete set for $18 - so beware.

5 out of 5 stars A classic compilation.......2006-10-07

This collection is one of my most treasured possessions. (My father gave me the original 5-album set in the 70's when it was originally released on vinyl.)

This is the definitive collection of Scott Joplin's work. Richard Zimmerman provides wonderful performances that accurately reflect Joplin's intentions. (As evidence beyond my personal opinion, I submit the recent releases of digital recordings made from Joplin's piano rolls.)

A few points to consider regarding negative comments you may encounter in other reviews:
* This is a digital recording from an analog master. Lack of quality in the recording does not imply a lackluster performance.
* This is a complete collection. Some similarity is due to Joplin re-exploring melodic themes. But some is due to the fact that these are "rags". One might as well complain that all 50's doo-wop (or all 70's disco) sounds the same.
* Many pieces of the period exhibit formal musical structures, such as the marches of John Phillips Sousa. (Both Sousa and Joplin performed at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.) Actually, Joplin is responsible for extending the formal boundaries of ragtime to concert waltzes (Bethena) and opera (A Guest of Honor, Treemonisha)
* This is probably one of the few collections which will include selections from "Treemonisha". It is my understanding that after the initial release, one of Joplin's descendants made a copyright claim that was upheld in court. (I presume the issue was that Joplin had to finance "Treemonisha" himself, and therefore the customary performance clearances did not cover those selections.)

For ragtime students and enthusiasts, this is a "must-have" collection at a very affordable price.

1 out of 5 stars A dis-service to Joplin.......2006-02-01

Sadly, the only virtue this set possesses is completeness.

The pianist does not play Joplin's pieces "as written", the piano is of poor quality, and not properly in tune.

This is emphatically NOT the set to buy. A far better set, beautifully annotated and well played on a good concert grand piano, is the complete works played by Guido Nielsen on the Basta Label.

This set is a dis-service to Joplin and his music. He deserves better, and gets it elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Unique .......2004-10-19

I have several cd sets of Joplin's music: Rifkin, Arpo, Nielsen, and Zimmerman. All have their excellent qualities. What sets Zimmerman's set apart is the inclusion of excerpts from Joplin's opera, Treemonisha---especially "A Real Slow Drag." Why the other sets do not include excerpts from Treemonisha, I don't know---because they are some of his most beautiful and joyful pieces of music. Of course, you can hear the orchestrated version of Treemonisha in the Houston Grand Opera recording, and it is spectacular. But Zimmerman's piano version, especially of "A Real Slow Drag," is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Great set.......2001-10-16

I guess this will be a rather one sided review. I have been a fan of Scott Joplin since I first learned to play a piano.

I was shocked to see that one reviewer thought it all sounded the same. How silly. All of Frank Sinatra's music sounds like Frank Sinatra. All of Led Zeppelin sounds like Led Zeppelin. So, if the songs were drastically different, I would question if the same author composed them. As it is, though, each song on this set is fantastic!!

I don't know that I have heard of Richard Zimmerman, and I was a little leary as to what I would be getting, I certainly was impressed. Without a doubt the best renditions of "Weeping Willow" and "Bethena" I have heard, and at least a dozen songs I didn't know Joplin wrote.

Without a doubt, this album is fantastic. A very good price, as well.

This collection is bound to capture your heart and evoke a tin ear on successive tracks. I found much to like and some duds - easy to skip over.

I definitely like inFINity better, but I have to say that my kids still adore this album, too.

5 out of 5 stars Best Childrens Folk Group.......2004-05-24

I have heard this and all of Trout Fishings other Albums and My entire Family is nothing short of Entranced. Ezra and Keith are wonderful and their songs are nothing short of hillarious for children and adults alike. Look up their other albums too. Infinity, It's A Puzzle, Family Music Party, Mine!, Big Trouble, Reel Life, Who Are These People, Over The Limit, Truth Is Stranger than Fishin'. ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2002-12-07

I love their music. My sons 7 and 10 have listened for years to their children's music. It is so fun. I even listen to it when the boys are not around. I recommend all of their CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Why don't more people know about these guys?.......1999-12-11

For those of you who have never heard of this duo, you're missing something special. And if you're facing the possibility of going more than a "Wee" bit insane or turning into a "Mommana-maniac" if you hear some of the more well-known kids music one more time, TFIA is for you. Their original songs--some rock, some folk, (an occasional tango) and most just delightfully silly,--have helped us happily survive many long car rides. Buy the CD's- you won't be sorry. And if possible, see them perform live, it's a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another Great Children's Album from TFIA.......1998-11-26

As a 10 year fan of Trout Fishing in America, I can unequivocally say that this is my favorite band of all time. I see them live whenever they come thru Texas. This album is a good childrens album, with lots of songs you can sing along with (even if you don't have kids).

If you are looking for more adult songs, check out "Who Are These People?", "Truth Is Stranger Than Fishing", or "Over the Limit".

Album Description

In My Life, Real Music's fourth release from this well-loved pianist, offers a further palette of exquisite melodies played with Kern's graceful, accomplished touch. It also marks a departure into a new realm where Kern expands his dynamic range. Included on this album are two gorgeous arrangements of Elton John and Lennon/McCartney songs.

In My Life strikes a beautiful balance of songs to comfort the heart and uplift the spirit.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars In My Life.......2000-01-18

I heard Kevin Kern for the first time while previewing CDs in Borders in Kauai, Hawaii. I instantly fell in love with his quiet, gentle piano style. I am beginning cancer treatment and find In My Life to be ideal music for practicing meditation and visualization. I never tire of this CD, after listening to it over and over again. I gave it to all my sisters and best friends for Christmas. Thank you, Kevin Kern!

5 out of 5 stars from "Wind and Wire", Issue 13.......1999-12-09

Kevin Kern's fourth album continues his legacy of soothing, uplifting piano-based pieces. There are no harsh notes or chords, and this collection of warm, feel-good melodies works well in either the foreground or as a backdrop for other activities. As he said in the interview we did (in this issue), Kevin composes most of his music with the idea in mind that it will be used as a background experience, keeping the pieces from being too challenging or intricate, and yet his mastery of this field also keeps the pieces from becoming trite or too minimalist. For the first time, Kevin has included arrangements of two pop songs. The CD opens with Elton John's "We All Fall in Love Sometime", a bittersweet tune that alternates between major and minor modes; it closes with The Beatles' "In My Life" - simple, sweet, and heartfelt. There is a strong Irish influence running through many of the songs, and "Emerald Legacy", a tribute to Kevin's father's Irish tenor, will have you softly singing "too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ra". Kevin has a tradition of composing at least one track on his albums spontaneously in the studio - this time it's "Twirling In Time" - a happy-go-lucky piano solo. That and "Passages" are my favorite tracks. "Passages" includes Thalia Moore on cello and Jeremy Cohen on violin, rounding out a lovely trio with Kevin's piano work.

The whole album is full of sunshine, and each piece has the glow of a warm smile. If you are into dark, heavy music, this is definitely not for you! If you love the soothing qualities of gentle flowing melodies on the piano, run down to the record store and pick this one up!

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite!.......1999-09-22

This is my second Kevin Kern album and he just keeps getting better! This CD is beautiful, introspective, and exciting, all at the same time. He has some new sounds that are just WOW as well. If you buy one CD this year, buy this one.

Based on Somerset Maugham's middling novel Theater, Annette Bening stars as the title character, an aging star of the London stage whose life and the melodramas she performs have come to mirror each other. Composer Mychael Danna sets those conflicts to a score that emphasizes theatrical surfaces and rigid role-playing, utilizing a finely honed classical pastiche approach with parallels to his previous period-evoking work on Vanity Fair. His cues here are rooted in the light romantic chamber music of the 19th century, though they frequently bristle with a more contemporary energy and aplomb. Offering counterpoint to Danna's dignified, oft-precious classical confections and mining the story's more sensual human dimensions are pop chestnuts from the era (The Andrews Sisters' saucy "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" and Mills Brothers' jaunty "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries"), as well as fine contemporary takes of "They Didn't Believe Me" and Noel Coward's "Mad About the Boy" by Denzel Sinclair and Alison Jicar's elegant read of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful melody but lacks variety.......2005-04-11

Being Julia OST has a beautiful main melody which occurs over and over again throughout the tracks. I especially like "Curtain Up" and "Quite Alone". However, Being Julia OST doesn't have other strong melody to show along side with the main melody which seems a little too simple for a complete album. The movie is great too. Annette Bening's performance is outstanding.

        5 out of 5 stars Overwhelmed.......2007-05-14

I was totally overwhelmed by this Swedish group, fantastic does not totally describe their style of music./ I liked the last recording on this CD 'Thingamabon'.

        5 out of 5 stars the best.......2006-03-06

I own Unreal! and I was excited to pick up this one at the ACDA Western Convention. I learned it was just released, so I only had to pay $16, which beats the high price for the import. But if you're impatient, it's worth every penny. When I first listened to it, I wondered if it's all a cappella music. The backups are truly amazing and the vocals were mind-blowing. I really enjoyed the first track. I recommend this to any Real Group fan, but if you can wait for the US release, I'd go with that.

        4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-12-21

I am a fan of the Real Group since 1997. I bought my first two CDs in Sweden and never turned back. All their albums are excellent, first rate, top notch a capella, absolutely unbeatable.

Technically immaculate, the only thing we can talk about is the style. Since roughly 1996, their own compositions have taken the majority of the space on the albums over standards or songs written by others.

This album features only compositions in the very familiar mixture of funky pop-jazzy-modernist? which is typical of the five members. The topics tackled in the album are also typical of the Real Group: love, life, family, human themes, even poetry, with a touch of humor.

My wife loves this group which is absolutely different than anything else yet immensely listenable. I love them because they are arrangement kings and oh-so-tone-perfect.

This is not a hard-edged album (and this is, I repeat, a stylistic preference, not a negative point). It is well rounded and if you are into a cappella and have never heard Real Group, this is a very very good place to start (try also One for all, Commonly unique for english-only lyrics).

One thing that strikes me about this album is how perfectly balanced it is (as opposed to their earlier efforts): the songs are not off-the-wall yet varied in style, not too experimental yet very rich, everyone gets compositional space; for a capella, this is, for a bunch of now "middle-aged" guys and gals (40!), a very satisfying, dare I say mature balancing act.

Miles away from Madonna or 50 cent. I say: dare to partake in this beautiful art!

5 out of 5 stars The Real Group Is As Real As It Gets.......2005-11-23

I've been a huge fan of contemporary acapella music for almost twenty years and as such, was surprised that I had not, in all that time, every heard of, much less heard, The Real Group until about a month ago. After stumbling across them on amazon.com, I had purchased "Unreal" and "The Real Thing" and realized that I had missed out one something very special. My next purchase was "In The Middle of Life" and since then I'm now convinced that they're absolutely the best vocal group of, perhaps, the past twenty years. Concerning this offering from this Swedish quintet, the following are my thoughts on only three of the songs in the interest of brevity (this review applies to the Japanese import with the two bonus tracks):

Prime Time Blues: A classic example of the almost parenthetical song title (meaning, specifically, without one) - Yes, the title is "Prime Time Blues", but the lyrical hook is the chorus "In the middle of life". The harmony introduction in no way indicates the pleasure one will receive once the "instruments" kick in, and what a pleasure it is! The gang has come a long way in developing a singularly unique vocal percussion sound, vaguely similar to that of Jeff Thatcher from Rockapella but without the bombast and pretension. The real surprise to me was the "guitar" line (in harmony, of course), reminiscent of classical R&B riffs - understated, but crucial to the overall sound. The bass line is far superior to almost any harmony group ensemble I've ever heard (including, yes, that of Barry Carl from Rockapella) insomuch as he actually captures the tone and timbre of the instrument. This song could have been a hit in the U.S. if Top 40 radio (a'la Casey Kasem) still existed. Unfortunately, it doesn't but equally fortunately, The Real Group does.

Words: The vocal percussion, bass line and spoken "words" immediately captures one's interest and the production value is stellar without overcoming the intimacy of the individual singers. The highly energetic (though not fast paced) introduction shortly "collapses" into an intimate, tight, 5-part harmony stacked vocal verse which begs (no, entices!) the listener to hear what they have to say. Their message is simple, but essential concerning the most basic communications tool we humans use. Facilitating between the aforementioned intimacy and majestic, powerful chorus, this song is one that bears repeated listens, preferably with headphones to fully appreciate the intricacy of the arrangement and recording.

The Thingamabob: What happens when an exceptionally talented vocal quintet decides, presumably, to forego recording a traditional (or even actual) song and decides, instead, to explore what they can do with manipulating the sound of the human voice in the guise of a bizarre narrative replete with obscure sounds (and this is the important part here - WITHOUT the use of processors/reverb and all of that nonsense) and all the while telling a cohesive story of a mad scientist/inventor who invents a device which does, well, actually, nothing? The answer is the closing track on the CD, "The Thingamabob". I'm absolutely stunned at the fact that, not only did they record this song, but that they even conceptualized it in the first place.

If you're a fan of contemporary acapella and have even a passing acquaintance with the likes of The Manhattan Transfer, The Bobs, The Nylons, Rockapella and The King's Singers, do yourself a favor and get this CD by The Real Group. I assure you that you'll enjoy stellar performances by what many consider to be the best vocal group over the past two decades.

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.
