Dave Matthews doesn't exactly seem thrilled about this release. But how would you feel if you made an album with a producer you didn't like, dumped it, and then woke up one morning to find it leaked on the Internet and available at every bootleg stall in New York City? That's pretty much what happened with "The Lillywhite Sessions," the unreleased, darker predecessor to the blockbuster Everyday album. Rather than turn their back on the fans, however, Matthews and company returned to the studio to do the job right. On Busted Stuff, they revive those solemn songs with diligent intensity, creating lovely swaths of melancholy and transcendence. Elegant tracks like "Grace Is Gone" and "Digging a Ditch" replace the dreary gloss of the last album with dazzling intimacy, and even the band's usual tendency for meandering jazz-rock flights is kept in check by the sheer weight of the material. Impressive stuff, in spite of what Matthews apparently thinks. --Aidin Vaziri

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Rather Listen To Lillywhite.......2007-04-02

I, along with many DMB fans downloaded the leaked "lillywhite Sessions" and although they were a darker Dave than we were used to it was very good material in my opinion. When "Busted Stuff" came out I was expecting more or less the same feel of Lillywhite but I was greatly dispointed. Busted Stuff came over as poppy cliches of the great material that was produced on Lillywhite. Maybe its just me but Lillywhite was much better and I would have been happier if Dave would have bootlegged it himself and made copies for everyone to buy in the stores instead of wasting the money to re-record it.

5 out of 5 stars amazing album.......2007-02-12

very good album
"grey street" by itself makes the whole thing worth it. good vocals, out-of-the-world accompaniment

4 out of 5 stars WHERE ARE THE HOOKS, RADIO FRIENDLY LYRICS AND MANUFACTURED MUSIC ?.......2007-01-13

If mainstream music is generally what you like and buy good for you, but I can tell you right now that you are simply not going to 'get' this CD, and you are definitely looking in the wrong place here, there is nothing here for you. For some crazy reason the DMB have historically and still rely upon meaningful songwriting and outstanding musicianship to sell records? Dumbasses, don't they know they could get mainstream radio play if they would just shorten their songs, throw in some catchy hooks, and dumb-down the lyrics. Or maybe the DMB write music the only way they know how, from the heart and soul, without regard for anything else? I think any DMB fan knows the answer to that question. This emotional and meaningful songwriting and remarkable musicianship is the very reason why the DMB sell out every show they play and have show-by-show earned the most passionate and loyal fans in the business.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2006-07-11

This album contains everything that Dave fans love about the band. Awesome lyrics mixed with great music.

1. Busted Stuff 7/10 - A great way to open an album. Lyrics are kind of down though. Certainly not an uplifting song.

2. Greystreet 9/10 - The lyrics are great but the music is absolutely beautiful. But you know what? It sounds even better live.

3. Where are you Going? 8/10 - The first single from the album. A really nice sounding song.

4. You Never Know 10/10 - My personal favorite. A brilliant song with a very uplifting message.

5. Captain 5/10 - Definitely not a song he should ever play live...

6. Raven 7/10 - A very clever song, I love the chorus

7. Grace is Gone 8/10 - Like the guitar at the beginning, great lyrics, fan favorite

8. Kit-Kat Jam 6/10 - Great music, but only if it had words...

9. Digging a Ditch 7/10 - Makes you kind of want to kill yourself

10. Big-Eyed Fish 9/10 - Very clever, love the music. I love the outro into Bartender

11. Bartender 10/10 - Unbelievable. That's the only word to describe it. Everything about it is beautiful.

A delightfully buoyant, mock-creepy collection of film scores from Hollywood's first and best call for quirk, strangeness, and charm. Focusing on Elfman's post-1992 work (much of it for director Tim Burton), this 2 CD set features excerpts from Edward Scissorhands, To Die For, and Batman Returns, among other lesser items. -- Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06

Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D

5 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2007-04-18

Very nice overview of Elfman work. Insufficient by itself but worth having along with the full soundtracks. Bonus disc is a nice extra.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-08

I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!

5 out of 5 stars Very nice for a Danny Elfman collection.......2005-08-02

Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this, then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.

5 out of 5 stars Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04

The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.

Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.

Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.

This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.

If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

5 out of 5 stars Great album!.......2005-12-22

I'm from the UK, and i obviously being a Busted fan, was caught up in all the hype about them, from when i heard their first single back in 2002, i was hooked.

This album contains some songs that were not on the original UK debut release, so you all are in for a treat, with their catchy beats, immature yet funny lyrics, how can you not like these 3 musicians?

Judging by some of the bad reviews Busted have got coz' they don't "play their own instruments" or "they have immature lyrics, go listen to real music", its more like this IS music, none of this "oh im gonna kill myself, life is horrible, i hate you" crap or any of the sex based rap stuff you see and hear nowadays. Busted's music is FUN, UPLIFTING and you can see off any bad days with their songs.

So give them a chance, and if you hate them, who cares? Certainly not me and the millions of fans over the water.

5 out of 5 stars The Busted Greatest Hits.......2005-09-23

Busted now splitted up, but this is their first and last cd released in USA. It contains a miture between the first (Busted) and the second album (A present for everyone) sold in Europe

I also recommend "A ticket for everyone", the last Busted album is Live in concert, featuring all their hits

Busted wrote funny songs, played guitar and bass, the Busted drummer arent inside Busted but always played with they.

Their music is different in each song, but almost is a Power Pop band.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM!! MUST HAVE!! PLENTY TEEN APPEAL!.......2005-08-19

This is one of the best albums! These kids are so young, and so extremely talented. They have awesome punk guitar licks, and catchy fun lyrics, that will be stuck in your head all day. This is a true punk/pop cd that you must have! This band is great for every teenager and really captures the feelings in a fun, immature, truefull way! Great Album! Great Album! Great Album!

5 out of 5 stars Catchy Songs.......2005-08-03

Busted not only write their own songs but also DO play their own instruments. I saw them live and they were amazing. All the songs on here are harmless fun and take your mind off whatever's happening in your life. According the review posted just before this one the lyrics are childish just because they don't talk about r*pe or swear like Nas. You listen to music to forget your troubles, not become more depressed! Besides that's not even music, it's just someone rapping to a beat; I bet he doesn't play his own instruments.

This album is the 'greatest hits' of their short career. But what great hits they had. This album has four number ones, and a further four top 3 hits. The lyrics can be patchy in places but all can be forgiven for such catchy tunes. This is a definite must buy for fans of pop music, which is why I'm bemused that fans of rap and rock music have actually reviewed this CD. Maybe they have a hidden liking for it!

5 out of 5 stars never disregard history!.......2006-08-25

This album was the first I ever heard that combined Heavy Metal with killer Keyboards. Wonderful rhythms. I first listened to this on 8-track in a friends nasty car for 4 hours while I waited for him to finish waiting on tables in 1974. Of course, anyone who's ever heard of Gary Wright will recognise the roots. I'm so glad I ordered this cd. It's still fabulous, maybe even more so than it was then. Especially if you love Bass. Real Bass. This is such good stuff. This album is sooo worth the price!

4 out of 5 stars Buried Treasure.......2006-01-07

I was originally introduced to this band in the mid 70's as a member of the RCA (now BMG) record club. I guess I was about 14 years old. During that time their album "You Broke My Heart, So I Busted Your Jaw" was offered as a selection in my preferred genre (Hard Rock of course)...and I simply could not escape the title...I had to have it! I had no idea what to expect, but fortunately it turned out to contain some great songs such as: "Cotton Growing Man", "Old As I Was Born" and "Self Seeking Man". Actually, the music on this album was endearing enough for me to develop an affinity for this band, and as a result I began to dig deeper into their substantial...yet elusive back catalog which contains riches far beyond the splendor of these. Certainly, "You Broke My Heart..." is a solid effort (especially by today's standards). ...Is it is a classic? Not in the same since as "Spooky Two". I would recommend instead "That Was Only Yesterday". Though not as complete as a "Best Of" should be (it has nothing from "Witness" or "The Mirror"), still it contains most of "Spooky Two" (excluding only "I've Got Enough Heartaches") and all the highlights from "It's All About", and "The Last Puff". It also includes (an edited) "Prayer" which is a snippet from "Ceremony" (and probably all you need) and last but not least: "Cotton Growing Man".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars some of his original stuff, an early rising star, good for the collection.......2007-06-21

Yeah, I agree, some of this stuff was not the caliber of his recent albums with Blue collar and his other two major label releases (Drunk in Public and You can't fix stupid), but give me a break, he had to start somewhere, and this album captures that. Yeah, its a bit down in recording quality, and the act isn't as refined, but its still funny. I my book, a must have in the Ron white historical Archive. Besides, its not terribly expensive, and it's still pretty good for some laughs. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars Funny but not Blue Collar Comedy Tour Quality.......2005-06-10

Ron White is hilarious comedian. He gained notoriety on the "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" and was every bit as good as Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy. Since I enjoyed that show and very much enjoyed his major label CD, I looked around for what else was available. There was not much but this one did come up on the search.

This is an earlier work. His timing is not as good and in his later work and his stories are not as funny but they are still very good. Some are also pretty dated. Unless you remember Olga Korbut and Nadia Comanech (?) as great gymnasts from the 70s and 80s Olympic games, some won't mean much.

His style is somewhat abrasive but the sarcasm is more directed towards himself than towards others. That doesn't stop him from launching a few zingers at others but a lot of it is self effacing.

If you like lowbrow, Southern style humor, you could do a lot worse than this one.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-04-20

For those who've seen the Blue Collar movies, heard "Drunk In Public," or seen "They Call Me Tater Salad," there's little new here. It is interesting to see how White's delivery and on-stage persona have developed since 1990 (he admits both to smoking pot and some level of homophobia, both of which he now disavows), when this set was recorded.

However, this CD points up how little material White actually has. While the bits have clearly been polished with time and experience, White seems to have done very little writing during the length of his career. As a fan of White's I find this sad, given his level of talent.

3 out of 5 stars Ron White is awesome but this CD falls a little short.......2005-01-22

Ron White has done some wonderful stuff on Blue Collar Comedy Tour and other CDs. Don't get this, get Drunk in Public or the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. It's a way better CD way funnier. Pick anonther CD.

5 out of 5 stars Stop Busting on Busted.......2005-09-08

I saw a lot of bad reviews for (now broken up) Busted. Sorry, I just don't get it - the music is POP, Original, Entertaining, and FUN ! In the US - I think people must have looked at the group photos and decided it was Punk or Alternative Rock. OK - the music is clearly, obviously, neither of those - but is rather SOLID POP. Original Radio Top 40 (aka POP - which this is) is way better than the same old American Idol Crap, over and over again. I Love it. Both the irrepressible theme from The Thunderbirds (Thunderbirds Are Go) - and the rest of the album are great fun.

1 out of 5 stars Is this a joke!? SERIOUSLY!!!.......2005-09-03

This album is just pathetic. The band is rubbish there just trying to appeal to little kids and teenage girls. There songs suck they can't play guitar there just apsolute bol*cks. I mean lines like 'I'm calling you at 3am and standing right outside your door' WTF are they on about do we give a sh*t if your outside someones door. I mean they give britian a bad look sure if you like them america have them we dnt want them. When busted tried to break america i sh*t myself in laughter. Everyone thought they were crap and to right to. Busted no-one gives a dam!!! Thankgod you broke up your lead singer did the right thing. Even your lead singer thinks your crap. To sum up if you buy this album i garantee you will end up crying on the floor wanting to kill yourself its just awful p.s busted suck p.s.s crap p.s.s.s BOL*OCKS!!!

1 out of 5 stars I CANT BELIEVE I USED TO LIKE THESE BACK IN 2003.......2005-03-29

5 out of 5 stars best BUSTED CD yet!.......2004-12-27

This CD is awesome! I hope that they decide to release the extra tracks that weren't included in "Busted". I highly recommend that any U.S. fan of Busted should buy this CD because you will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars A Present For Everyone.......2004-08-17

I don't care what other people throw at me this not being 'real' music.I constantly hear critics about this band not being credible or whatsoever. Busted are the freshiest thing that came around in pop music after ages. Nowadays most pop acts wouldn't recognise a instrument if it came and slap them in their face. This album's a great proof how a pop band can play instruments, write their own (yes) songs and do fresh, catchy music without going down on a level of chessy crap.

My favourite songs from the album are:

She Wants To Be Me - Great tune, great lyrics, Charlie's an awesome drumer. End off.

3am - One of the best songs on the album. Personally I adore the beats and the lyrics. It's not really what you'd expect from Busted but not in a bad way!

Falling For You - I love it!I usualy cacth myself singing it when im in a very good mood and I can even relate to it a bit.Good lyrics again.

That Thing You Do - Dirty lyrics! It always puts a smile on my face and makes me think:'You just cannot be serious!'

Fake - Again,tut-tut, dirty lyrics, great chorus though, its a kinda fast song I'd say.

Meet you There - Great acoustic song and awesome lyrics. My fave line is probably: 'Where's the world that doesnt care? maybe I could meet you there' Classic!

Why - This is, without a doubt the best song in the album and the best Busted song ever.Well, for me anyway. Excellent lyrics I can mostly relate to. I love the way, at the beginning of the song everything's calm and then the guitars come in. And the end when the guitars stop again and it goes:' maybe a chance will keep me high, stop me thinkin wonder why.' Magnificient!

Better Than This - I can relate to almost every word in this song.I love the background of this song. Matt's a great singer and song writer and this song defenetly proves it.

I'm looking forward to the day when people learn to appreciate this band in a way they deserve and realise how young they still are but how much they already achieved. Forget the complaining, that's to admire for.

2 out of 5 stars Busted is right. Broke down and (almost) out. And Woke Up With A Monster is even worse. Sigh...........2005-12-22

The incredibly watered down 'Busted' has only
two real good songs on it - 'Back 'N Blue',
which I heard the band play Live in South
Carolina in July 1991, and a good single and
video, "Whereever Would I Be", with Bun E.
crying over cutting red onions (not Red Siren,
who he no doubt would have rather been playing
with when this turkey was released). Or was
it because TP was back in the band at the expense
of his 'Bun E. Carlos Experience' stick-buddy,
Jon Brant [who would show back up years later
on Silver, the video, the album and did 17 gigs
with Cheap Trick in early 2004 - darn it, I missed
'Em with my boy back on Bass)?! I guess we'll never
know. Despite Sony/Epic's comic book, videos (the
third never made the final cuts for 'Every Trick in
the Book') and video compliation. No stone (except
the rolling kinds) were "interned' to provide an-
other 'hit'-writers weakened Cheap Trick effort.

Check the song writing credits THAT THE 'Tricksters
actually DID have something to do with. Too much TP
all over this disk. The critics loved this as much
as L.O.L. but snickered all the way to more loot at
the expense of us Cheap Trick fans, who would have
preferred The Doctor, Standing On The Edge, or at
least a harder Rock effort (A La [not OO La La La]
One On One. Oh well - 'Reputation IS a FRAGILE
thing, I know we know it.'

    4 out of 5 stars Busted (1990).......2005-10-28

After the success of 1988's Lap of Luxury, Busted may disappoint some fans, who are looking for a carbon copy of Lap of Luxury. While, Busted didn't spawn any big hits it is a very good album. While Busted may not be Cheap Trick's best album it is certainly a very good, later day album from Cheap Trick. The biggest stand out is Can't Stop Fallin into Love, but all of the songs sound good. Busted is just one of those albums, that may not leave a lasting effect on you, but it does sound good while it's playing.

4 out of 5 stars Lies , Lies all Lies.......2005-07-13

All you dudes bashing Cheao Trick , stop it. This is ans was a very good attempt and a successful one at shaking off Lap of Luxury. Roots maybe not, but just good rock Yes. That's what these guys have always been about. There is a re-newed spirit and the songs are just pretty dam good. Some filler but very few. Trick rules !

1 out of 5 stars Middle aged pap from Cheap Trick.......2004-04-26

This was another of the albums where the press release claimed they were getting back to their roots to make the rock album we'd been waiting for since the turn of the 80's. Guess what? I'm starting to think that press releases are just ginned up by the record company to drum up advance interest in their product because NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH in the case of "Busted". All it did was give us three actively bad CT albums in a row. In baseball, that's a strikeout, but music fans are more forgiving. I still faithfully pick up each CT release and have even kept this bowl-swirler around just to keep my set complete, but the dust that sits on it could qualify as "vintage". Maybe I should sell it on Ebay.

3 out of 5 stars Busted But Not Beaten.......2003-02-05

So much outside influence had been exerted on "Lap Of Luxury," that you can almost hear the clashing of swords on "Busted." Cheap Trick wanted more control over the sound, Epic Records wanted another "Flame." Between the marketers and the musicians, some sort of balanced was reached. The end result is a album that is good but not inspired, and manages not to become a total bow wow ala "The Doctor."

"Back'N'Blue" is the closest thing to a Stones knock off that Cheap Trick has ever attempted. It totally out rocks anything else on the CD. Almost as if to balance that kind of power, the title track sounds like a piece of modern rock radio piffle. "Can't Stop Falling Into Love" was the band's attempt at writing a hit ballad (it made the top twenty), the label honchos served up another Diane Warren contender with "When You Need Someone."

What all parties seemed to miss (or at least until the "Authorized Greatest Hits" was released) was that the best song here was "Walk Away." This was the kind of song I longed to hear on my radio during those times, a near perfect power-pop-rock confection featuring the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde. Although you can do better in your Cheap Trick CD collection, "Busted" is worth having on that single song alone.

"What I Go To School For" is an awesome song! I love it, although Busted could have picked a better choice for a USA debut single. If you like Ryan Cabrera or Simple Plan, you will love Busted! Get your copy of the "What I Go To School For" CD-Single and the debut self-titled "Busted" album now! :)

    3 out of 5 stars Busted's first attempt........2004-07-27

I think this is just a "good" pop song, nothing groundbreaking really, they could have released another song as their first single since I think this is too childish for America. I hope their album is a mixture of their both albums cause now that they're older they just seem silly lusting about their high school teacher. I hope thier next single will be either "3am" or "Who's David?", and if they want another uptempo they shoudl go for "Crashed the wedding" or "Thuderbirds are go".
*An important detail, the cd specifies that the CD-Rom track is 14.39 which I think it's a mistake or maybe it's just my cd, it just has the video which is like 3.20 long and another clip which is a waste of space. It's just them singing accapella on the streets and being chased by a cop, they do t 3 times and it gets really annoying. It also has a gallery with about 6 pictures. All of this hardly sum 6 mins in total running time.

5 out of 5 stars Wow...released in USA SO soon..........2004-06-01

This was a great debut song from Busted---2 years ago. I've been playing this in my DJ shows for at least a year-and-a-half. One of the biggest mysteries in my musical knowledge is why this fun American sounding band's release took so long to hit these shores. What were they waiting for--10 million sold? Busted are probably primed to release their 3rd CD and the US is just now getting the 1st. Talk about conversative marketing... Oh yeah, the single is great...hilarious...as are Air Hostess, She Wants to be Me, and Falling for You from the new one "Present"--expect that in 2010 at this rate :)
