Back in the '80s and '90s, Richard Thompson could be depended upon to release a well-crafted collection of Celtic-influenced folk-rock every few years. But when he left Capitol after 1999's Mock Tudor, Thompson headed off on side projects, all of typically high quality, but not the solo albums his established cult expected. Those fans can now rejoice, because on Sweet Warrior Thompson roars back with his first electric set of originals since 2003, and it's a winner. As the disc's title implies, he revisits the familiar territory of love as a battlefield in these 14 originals. The concept is emphasized by a liner photo of the singer/songwriter in army gear and camouflage flanked by two beautiful women planting kisses on either cheek. Supported by longtime backing cohorts, the guitarist adds to his six-string talents with occasional mandolin, autoharp, accordion, and even organ, all used as icing on a cake of tunes that further refine his established style. Perhaps the most startling song is the viciously anti-war "Dad's Going to Kill Me," about a soldier stationed in Baghdad (the "Dad" of the title), wondering if he will survive another day. "Guns are the Tongues" finds Thompson telling the tragic tale of a young man enticed by a woman's charms ending up as a suicide-bombing terrorist. Thompson's dramatic guitar solos are kept on low boil, occasionally bubbling up but never hogging the spotlight. They are, along with his distinctive vocals, actors in a play of characteristically classy tunes that will thrill Thompson's fans, who have been waiting for just such a set of literate and challenging music from a musician who never delivers less. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

Literate rocker Richard Thompson's new album, Sweet Warrior, is a return to his classic electric sound, his first plugged-in album since 2003's The Old Kit Bag. Filled with 14 songs of stories of loss and betrayal, the album also contains one of Thompson's most overtly political songs to date, "Dad's Gonna Kill Me," told from the perspective of a nervous young soldier stationed in Baghdad (abbreviated as "Dad" in the song). Richard Thompson is a consummate singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His career stretches back to the late '60s, when he was a founding member of the British folk-rock Fairport Convention. In the late '70s, with his then-wife, Linda, he recorded Shoot Out the Lights, which regularly makes critics' lists of the best records of all time. In the '90s, he experienced another career renaissance with the album Rumor & Sigh and he remains an elder-statesman of alternative rock.

Another superlative CD from Richard Thompson. Lyrically and instrumentally he is without peer. I keep expecting the odd bad record, but they just don't come from this genius of folk-rock. Together with Neil Young and possibly Van Morrison, he is the only artist whose CD I would buy unheard.

Wow! I was turned on to Richard Thompson only about 8 years ago, but have since become an ardent fan and I've been picking up anything I could by him ever since.

I generally don't like a heavy dose of political opinion mixed in with my music, but RT pulls it off here without being annoying, and considering the state of worldwide affairs it's actually pretty timely anyway. His anger in I'll Never Give it Up makes me wonder if he's dissing Bush or Blair, but one's own interpretation of the lyrics is what can make a song so delicious. His guitar playing continues to send shivers down my spine, especially on the track Take Care the Road You Choose. And who cannot feel sharp pangs of sorrow for the poor soldier in Dad's Gonna Kill Me ? Wow. RT's ability to elicit such emotion (through his lyrics or playing) are part of what make him such a treasure.

All of the songs are at least good, and most are outright great. In my opinion, this album will stand with RT's all-time bests.

I had heard the Dropkick Murphys before on some Punk-O-Rama cds, and liked thier music, but I just never bought a cd until the Warrior's Code. This is one of if not THE best cd I have heard in a very long time. From the upbeat riffs of "Your Spirit's Alive" to the somber melody and lyrics of "The Green Fields of France" this cd does not disappoint from start to finish!

I was a little unfamiliar with the Dropkick Murphy's, except for a soundtrack clip from a recent film, and was uncertain with what I would get. Amazons website allows the buyer the ability to listen to clips from each track and I liked what I heard. After I got the CD, liked wasn't the word anymore. Love is the new word and "The Warriors Code" album has become a big favorite of my wife and two children. "Letters Home" hits close to any veteran's heart. In my book "Wicked Sensitive Crew" should be a classic. I highly recommend this album to all you "seriously sensitive dudes!"

Such a cool album. Bolan's voice is still unique. People just getting into it might not like it at first, but it does grow on you. Its a great record to throw on when you're on a drive, or just hanging out. Great party record. Don't have much time for Cosmic Dancer, but when you've gotten beyond Jeepster and Bang a Gong, check out my two favorites, Hot Love and Raw Ramp. Classics one and all.

This album captured a defining moment in rock and musical history, and made 1971 all the more 'cosmic', as well as honestly creating a genre imitated by many other bands whether consciously or unconsciously. It remains a sad reminder to his loyal fans of what a wonderful gift of music this man contributed to the world. His music is like a warm fragrant summer breeze that makes you happy to be alive.....and also reminds you how frail and precious life can be. It is his first venture into a 'full' rock band and rock album, yet still retains the spiritual feel and lyrical content of his previous albums, to a degree. It probably is his best album from a critic's and the average listening public's point of view; Commercially his best album in the States, while scoring a top ten hit with 'Bang A Gong'. 'Cosmic Dancer' is a revelation, 'Bang A Gong' is his signature song and a terrific rocker that is subtle and explosive at the same time, 'Jeepster' is Marc Bolan doing 50's rock and roll with fuzz and is so cool!'Planet Queen' could have been a huge hit I'm sure...'Life's A Gas' has such a classic hook and a winner as well as sad too...'Monolith' is so 'pre' 'Dark Side Of The Moon' sounding, and actually is as good as anything on that album (Floyd is awesome though).'Girl' reminds me of John Lennon, and even more of a style Bowie would take on, and is a beautiful song.'Rip Off' is like something off from a Stones album from that time period, yet all Bolan!'The Motivator' is a catchy song with a good driving force, 'Mambo Sun' is the great opener and mood setter for the album,'Lean Woman Blues' is a great "happy" blues song, and almost a live, written on the spot kind of song!
To sum it up, get this album- it's classic and takes you to another plane of consciousness if you let it!

"The Electric Warrior" is an album which was created at the beginning
of the English Glam Rock movement ."The Electric Warrior" served as
a template for Mott the Hoople and David Bowie .Marc Bolan combined
acoustic guitar work and classical orchestration with electric guitar
riffs .The result of that combination is the tour de force known as
"The Electric Warrior ".Poetic lyrics written by Marc Bolan augment
the melodious sounds .Bonus tracks such as "Hot Love" and "Raw Ramp"

This album should really be considered one of the great classics of rock, but seems to often be overlooked. Many people seem to have either never heard of T. Rex, to mistake them for some 80's band (I have no idea what they are talkign about), or to only know "Bang a Gong." This album literally has no clunkers; every track is essential. Next to Bowie's indispensable glam albums, this is the best of the genre and really some of the best rock recorded. The orchestration always works, never coming off as too slick etc., and the guitar is really killer. There are great riffs and tasty solos. Several of these songs, such as the hits "Jeepster" and "Bang a Gong,' and the superb should be classic "Mambo Sun" are simply iresistibly groovin' tracks that make you want to get up and move. "Rip Off," the album's closer is an amazing track as well, almost a jazzish punk track, that rocks hard. Really though, any songs that I didn't mention, were omitted for the sake of this review's brevity; in all honesty, every track is not merely enjoyable, but vital, carefully crafted, and simply tremendous. Do not hesitate to get this album; you will be glad you've discovered T. Rex if this is your first exposure to the group, they were a real treasure that's never been appreciated quite the way they deserved (especially Bolan).Few albums are more enjoyable than this one.

Whether Tom Cruise's portrayal of a 19th century American soldier cum samurai warrior will be remembered with the same pangs of pop-cultural bemusement that befell John Wayne playing Genghis Khan remains to be seen. But its musical soundtrack does mark an auspicious occasion: pop musician-turned-composer Hans Zimmer's 100th score since beginning his film career in 1988. A pioneer of fusing both the electronic and orchestral and the Westernized with the indigenous, Zimmer does both here with skill, drawing heavily on samples of the traditional Taiko (a massive Japanese drum) for its rhythmic action sequences, while constructing a melodic Western motif for Cruise's character that's both centerpiece and counterpoint for the score's transcultural intent. Aside from the brief, ominous thunder of the expected action/suspense boilerplate, Zimmer has constructed passages of gentle, Asian-inflected pastoralism that have parallels with much of his evocative work on The Thin Red Line. Those cues are the score's very soul, a canvas against which his more traditional themes reverberate all the stronger. --Jerry McCulley

If you liked Dances With Wolves this is it in Japan - I do think it is Tom C's best movie. The sound track is excellent - Zimmer also did Batman Returns which has a fantastic soundtrack - Hans is comming on

I always love it when composers branch out and write music that you would never expect them to write, yet retaining their own trademark sound. Here, Hans Zimmer utilizes his own, recognizable sound, where you know it's him with eastern instrumentation, such as Taiko drums, the shakuhachi (a staple in Horner scores lately), and the koto harp. It's east meets west, a route in which Tan Dun took on in the film "Hero", and Zimmer's score follows many of those same musical ideas, only not quite as eastern sounding as Dun's score.
The main theme is a powerful 7-note anthem which tends to build its way up each time, as in "A Way of Life", "Spectres in the Fog", "Idyll's End", and "Safe Passage". You can tell it is a Zimmer theme just by its sound, but with the oriental flavor thrown in, it really adds to the mix.
The action music in the score is exciting with energetic Taiko drums keeping the pulse moving. They do not get tiresome, as you might think because Zimmer uses them more like a heartbeat, not a heart attack! "Red Warrior" is a powerful anthem, consisting of japanese warrior chants, which really add to the scope of the sound. Other noteworthy tracks are "Ronin" and "The Way of the Sword", which are enjoyable pieces of music.
I was pleased of the results of Zimmer's work here. It showcases Zimmer's diversity with his music. I hope he gets the opportunity to write more diverse scores such as this. The Da Vinci Code is certainly one of them!

This soundtrack is brilliant, and Hans Zimmer even more. He is truly one of the great film composers. The Last Samurai's sounds never fail to draw emotion from me.

Originally released in 1976, Return To Forever's Romantic Warrior could be described as the high-water mark of jazz fusion's commercial popularity, reaching a spot on the Billboard charts and garnering the group a fanatical following of fans attracted to the band's technical prowess and bombast. Released on the heels of the breakup of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Romantic Warrior still sounds like a standard-bearer for jazz fusion, full of flashy solos and complicated arrangements that seem like collages of different moods, meters, and tempos. The album is much closer to the progressive rock of Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, or King Crimson than anything from the jazz realm. Return to Forever's rhythm team of bassist Stanley Clarke and drummer Lenny White, who gives the group a subtly funkier sound than most of their contemporaries. Still, it's pianist Chick Corea, using a veritable arsenal of keyboards and effects, and guitarist Al DiMeola, only 21 at the time of this recording, who define Romantic Warrior as a fusion landmark. What can I say to do justice to this masterpiece of an album.

The previous reviews go deep into each songs so I want to share what is was like to have discovered this music in my High School years. I wore out my vinyl, then my cassette tape, and my last CD copy of this insane album. And to think that Al Di Meola was just 21 at the time...

I had the pleasure to see them at Universal Amphitheatre in North Hollywood (now called Gibson Amphitheatre) when I was in High School. Although a bit past my time, I was lucky enough to find older friends into RTF and other great music of the 70's explosion of incredible musicians and collaborations.

Bunch of us saved up some money for the tickets (among other mind enhancing materials) and managed to get good seats, in front of Lenny White, who oddly set up his batteries to the left of the stage.

I'm a guitarist primarily so I was interested in seeing Al doing his demonic leads but ended up mesmerized by Lenny White's endless rolls and phase-effected drum sound. These guys were so adept at their instruments, I can see the creativity just oozing out of them as they improvised through the evening, featuring most of the Romantic Warrior album and some of their previous hits, with full command of their instruments and facial expressions.

The concert was so influential for me that I had gone head-long into the world of Jazz Fusion and my guitar playing also changed direction from Robert Fripp / Eno to the world of Jaco, Al, John "Mahavishnu", Allan Holdsworth, & Gambale.

There are only few vinyl albums I've worn out over the years and this is one of them. It is truely one of the best Chick Corea albums of all time.

It still sounds fresh and causes me to start air drumming in my car, despite the funny looks from the other cars.

A great buy for any lover of this band

5 out of 5 stars The Knights-errant Of The Fusion Sound.......2007-02-19

Not only is this 1976 release one of the defining studio albums in fusion, the album art was produced during the heady times of the music industry when the visual appeal through beautiful paintings also took center stage.

Chick Corea (k) shows the influences from Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman, without the overbearing pretentiousness that plagued the dynamic duo during the height of their careers. Al DiMeola (g) is only 21 years old at the time of the session and the rhythm section can't get much better with Stanley Clarke (b) & Lenny White (d).

Corea leads the group with some of his best work on Medieval Overture, with DiMeola showing amazing technical prowess during Sorceress. The title track sets the foundation for the best cut, the Yes-inspired Majestic Dance. The band performs some quiky tricks in The Magician and The Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant (Part I and Part II) - a great example of an arty 1970s song title - allows Clarke & White to get down with a funky sound.

Corea learned his musical lessons well as a member of several groups that Miles Davis used to define the new frontier of fusion. And that Return to Forever took the musical experience to another level makes Romantic Warrior a classic.

This recording was undoubtedly the best fusion recording of it's time, maybe ever. Kudos to Chick Corea for bringing together probably the hottest group of modern jazz players ever and letting them shine. Al Di Meola is my absolute favorite fusion guitar player. Stanley Clarke is baddest bass player on the planet and Lenny White is the funkiest, grooving, slamming drummer I've ever heard. Not to mention Chick's pure keyboard genius. Each of them contribute compositions to this recording and the personalities comes through loud and clear.

I dig this album.I remember when "The Warrior" was a big hit.Good song.I never heard the rest of the album until recently."All I want" is my favorite song on this album.I heard Scandal was touring around with Rick Springfield but never made it to Seattle.None the less,I recommend this album to anyone who likes good hard rock.Hope the Band makes another album.

Do you like the single "The Warrior"? Of course you do! And the rest of this album is just great. This is not one of those one-good-song albums. You won't believe this group only recorded one and a half albums(Patty Smyth did go on to record two OK solo albums)! The songs are filled with guitar hooks. "All I Want", "Beat of a Heart", "Hands Tied": they're all great. A real gem from the mid-eighties of guitar chord pop-rock. Only 3 tracks from here are on the Patty Smyth greatest hits CD, the other 7 are not.

I must admit that the effort was definitely placed into the production of the album: the eponymous, mantra-charged "The Warrior", [however the music video is nothing short of the over the top 80's chintziness], to the hypnotic "Beat Of a Heart."[sometimes a fool gets lucky and wins...sometimes the innocent pay for an old man's sins...] (Why "Beat Of A Heart" never made it into the Top 40 is still a mystery to me).
"Hands Tied", another strong performance by Smythe et. al. was another hit that just missed the Top 40, but still deserves a nod of attention for its lyrics.
But there's an overall subdued malaise sensed on this album, sort of like the record big-wigs demanding that Scandal produce a quick succession to their debut "Scandal" album. Too bad that interference from the higher ups at the record label contributed to Scandal's demise, because Scandal was definitely a band that could've produced many more albums to follow. Let's just say that "The Warrior" doesn't give Scandal their defining moment in rock history, but it certainly associates the gutsiness and daring lyrics that gives Scandal their good name. "The Warrior" is definitely worth having in your collection.

Scandal's impact on 80's hard guitar rock has registered as a brief blip. True enough, but Warrior, the full-length release they spawned, deserves its tribute nearly twenty years after its debut. I mean, it's got that archetypal 80's rock sound, and that's what I grew up on.

The big hit from this album is of course, "The Warrior", co-written by none other than Holly Knight. A searing hard-rock, early Bryan Adams-style guitar opens this single, whose memorable chorus goes "Shooting at the walls of heartache/Bang bang, I am the warrior". Smyth is really the Amazon here in this song equating capturing someone's love to hunting. Bit unromantic, really, but then again, Smyth does have a bit of sensuous rough in her, doesn't she?

The other single, "Beat Of A Heart" is more laid back rock set by the bass and drums. Producer Mike Chapman and Holly Knight did the words and music for "Hands Tied" whose rhythm section has that steady pulsing beat reminiscent of "Every Breath You take" or "Missing You". Another "seeing an ex with another girl" type song, Smyth's (or rather the narrato's toughness reveals deep down more tender vibes: "Just remember each time you squeeze her hand, you crush my heart." She tells him further that "She may be one good reason to leave [me]/But I'm a hundred reasons to stay."

"Less Than Half" is standard 80's rock-ballad, of a couple the night after, with the tensions described vividly: "We move in circles/with our eyes on the door/saying so little/thinking much more." Yet the woman here decides to stick with the rotter: "But everything you've ever said was a lie/so pull me closer to your heart that's no good."

The cover of Journey's "Only The Young" is a straight ahead one, but it shows that Patty Smyth had as much oomph as Steve Perry in this song, and I say this when comparing her version with her solo single "Never Enough." A standout cut here, and as I was apprised of this by Eric Andrews, another bigup for him.

"All I Want" has marching steady guitar riffs and has Smyth smartly telling someone seeking thrills from the street, to stand out alone, that "But now and then you have to see/that it's only you, it's only me."

The lack of communication in "Talk To Me" exposes Smyth's vulnerable side, as she pleads with her dear one to speak to her, saying "Don't you know baby they're trying to break us up?"

"Say What You Will" is another somber breakup rock ballad, but the pace picks up with "Tonight" and "Maybe We Went Too Far", which are mid-paced closers.

Produced by Mike Chapman, best known for bringing out the heart of glass in Blondie, so to speak, and who also played a part in Tina Turner's Private Dancer, Scandal was a probing ground for Smyth until her criminally out-of-print solo album, Never Enough. Scandal's gifted in having a consistent sound which makes up for the lack of other rockers that have the same punch as "The Warrior" or some that are lyrically unmemorable. The only scandal here is that Smyth and company have been forgotten twenty years later.

Patty Smyth is an underrated singer. She seemed after this second album to just disappear. It is a shame since she had alot of talent and a very strong voice... WARRIOR is a good album although not enough for 5 stars... The best songs from it are WARRIOR (of course!) BEAT OF A HEART, TALK TO ME and my favorite HANDS TIED (hands down the best song after WARRIOR) the other songs are okay but slip into the bland ballad area and seem to only fill space... I am a HUGE JOURNEY fan so I was a bit doubtful of her cover of ONLY THE YOUNG but she did a decent job if at best it sounded more pop oriented and a little weak compared to the original... But I will give Patty a B- for her effort (ONLY THE YOUNG) here... All in all a good album for a few songs... Patty come back and grace us with your musical prescence... ...PLEASE COME BACK and save music from itself...

If it were about this,I would never bought the CD.I mean I never saw the movie and I ain't really into scores so it's good they made a compilation instead,a great one I must say.All the songs are 5 stars and even more,plus the couple quotes between each songs are well chosen and true.What else can I say,it's a trully good soundtrack with gorgeous songs,specially at the 30 first minutes of the CD.I'm there too is very sad but so wonderful,can't wait to have Michelle Featherstone's CD.Just buy it you won't be disappointed at all.

I saw this on a recommendation from a friend and just sat in the theatre after it ended -- smart, touching, moving and inspiring. I'm glad it was (finally) released on DVD -- it's a permanent addition to my library which I can watch whenever I want, and I'm sure it will be often.

While I'm sure these vocal songs were chosen from the movie, I'm not really sure why. There are no orchestra pieces on this soundtrack even though it was the orchestral pieces in the movie that were the most effective/emotional/memorable/etc.

In fact, I don't remember any vocal pieces in the movie. Maybe these pieces were what he was listening to in his motorcycle helmet in the movie, but we just couldn't hear them?

Release the orchestral version please.

I loved the movie. I agree with the other reviewer. It *is* disappointing that the instrumental pieces are not featured. Also, lots of people seem to love the song "Breath Me" by Sia which was used in one promotional trailer. For some reason, this song is not featured on the CD. That's a shame.

On the other hand, I really like most of the songs on the CD. Nice mix.

Every other track is a short inspirational message from Dan Millman. While I really like Dan's work, this does get a bit annoying if you just want to play the music through. Perhaps they could have included all of his parts at the end?

This movie was very touching and a big part of the emotion for me was sparked by the ORCHESTRAL pieces, not the collection of vocal numbers here, most of which I don't even recall hearing. I'll be buying the DVD when it's available as much for the story as for the music that helped make it memorable.

If you think the percussionist's role is merely to supply rhythmic backbone, you haven't encountered the phenomenon named Evelyn Glennie. The category-defying Scottish musician has spent her career pursuing the unique route of percussion virtuoso, turning music into an intensely hyperactive verb. Glennie's sound world encompasses a global, pan-cultural panoply of music makers in addition to the standard drum kit: watergongs, bamboo sticks, ceramic bells, car exhaust pipes, finger cymbals, thundersheet--to name a few from the arsenal she uses here (Glennie reportedly owns over 1,000 percussive instruments). Even in her interpretations of works by other composers--such as James MacMillan's Veni, Veni, Emmanuel or the Grammy-nominated Concerto for Percussion by Joseph Schwantner--Glennie scoops out plentiful opportunities for improvisation; but the concept of Shadow Behind the Iron Sun was to allow Glennie to lock herself up in her studio and improvise the entire album. With the help of her collaborator, pop mixmaster Michael Brauer, the result is a fantastically textured, mesmerizing adventure for the ears and the imagination. Despite a vague ambition to explore "as many moods as possible" (Michael Crichton's Eaters of the Dead was apparently the source for some of the picturesque titles here, such as "Attack of the Glow Worm" and "Wind Horse"), the variety and juxtaposition of colors evoke a cinematically gripping, almost synesthetic sense of atmosphere--yet another evolution of "program music" into the 21st century? Much of the fun is in experiencing sounds whose origin remains mysterious, as Glennie performs her one-woman-as-orchestra wonders. --Thomas May

I love this album!!! Evelyn Glennie is the most profound percussionist I have ever heard. Her music penetrates my body: sometimes I feel it in my heart, sometimes in my solar plexis. I feel it in my soul. This album can be enjoyed over and over and over. Thank You Evelyn Glennie! Big Gratitude!

I went to a solo concert of hers because I had heard what I thought must be hype of her wonder. I was totally and utterly destroyed by her performance. She has complete technical perfection, tremendous athletic ability (yes percussion demands of the body), personal charm, and dramatic zest. Many of the albums I listened to after disappointed me because she clearly held herself within the strict measure of the others she performed with. I suspect her deafness makes her fearful of any rubatto in an orchestral setting. This album is the only one that begins to give a sense of her god-like gifts.

This CD is a true experience, similar to Charles Ives' "New England Holidays". The range of instruments Glennie uses and creates brings to mind Mickey Hart's statement about drummers being desperate and doing anything to produce sounds. Her music gets into your mind and body. It's appealing enough that my son, a rap fan, sat fascinated while "Land of Venden" was playing. His comment, "This is almost scary!", leads to my opinion that her talent is almost scary. Do yourself a favor and buy this one, it provides great mental and emotional rejuvenation.

Even if percussion sans so-called melodic instruments isn't what you think of when selecting a cd you've got to listen to this. Ms Glennie creates quite a melodic and dramatic tapestry and draws the listener right into the middle of it. Yes, it does take a few listenings to penetrate to the gist of it but that only enhances the genuine beauty contained here. Perhaps that is a given in any deeply creative work.

Even my dog liked it -- mesmerized by the music, staring at the stereo like the mutt in the RCA logo.

Solo percussion is, admittedly, an acquired taste. The song samples here give you a reasonable flavor of the album. If you don't like them, don't buy it.

At the same time, Glennie has done more than anybody to advance the art, the possibilities, and the popularity of percussion. (I saw her perform a snare solo encore last year that brought the audience to its feet.) In this album, she operates with more freedom and pushes more boundaries than in anything she's done to date. Yet it's still an approachable and genuinely exciting collection of music.

To capture the horror, passion, and odd romance of Michael Crichton's tale of ancient clashes between Arabs and Vikings, Goldsmith embarks on a musical spectacle of his own. The 13th Warrior is an excellent and underrated score. Goldsmith creates a mix of Arabian style music to go with his interpretation of what Viking music would be to create a unique and enjoyable listening experience. I bought this cd on the strength of Goldsmith's name and enjpyed it so much I actually bought the movie, which was not too bad either. While Goldsmith had great success in 1999 with his score to the Mummy, the 13th Warrior is just as good if different in tone and style, proving just what a master Goldsmith was.

Sorry to waste everyone's time, but I had to reply to comments made in a review by Johannes Leonard Rusten: "I'm from Norway, and [a] viking named Hrothgar?? Come on!!"

Although I am not from Norway, I can tell you that "Hrothgar" is absolutely an authentic Viking name. The name and character of Hrothgar are taken directly from the epic poem BEOWULF, upon which "The 13th Warrior" is based.

While the poem itself was written just after the time of the Vikings, the tale of Beowulf (and Hrothgar)was passed down from actual Viking oral tradition. Accepted by both literary and historical scholars, much of our knowledge of ancient Nordic culture comes from BEOWULF. Absolutely awsome score by one of the most compelling and thrilling movie composers of our time. The use of Arabic sounds in this score is really breathtaking. I reccomend this one to anyone who appriciate Jerry Goldsmith's work. It's a winner !!!

Techniclly, you don't need a soundtrack to play Dungeons and Dragons, or maybe a "Lord of the Rings" Monopoly game. But asuming you WANT one, then Nox Arcana's latest, "Blood of the Dragon," is an excellent option -- majestical, fantastical, gothic, and geeky.

It opens with fantasy-rock flourishes, steam hissing, and a chorus of powerful choirlike voices. Very "Lord of the Rings." Then a deep voice says very solemnly: "In a time of the ancient gods, dragons ruled the skies. Kingdoms rose and fell at the end of a sword. Legendary quests beckoned with the promise of danger and glory, and only a brave few dared to answer the call..."

That more or less sets the tone for the rest of the album: Nox Arcana keeps up that high fantasy feel throughout, flavoured with some Celtic sounds. Bagpipe stomp, eerie haunting medieval ballads, shimmering ethereal pop urgent, urgent strings and ominous "Dark Lord" music, darkly intriguing gothic music, frightening fantasy war-march, and new-age balladry.

Nox Arcana has already tackled ghosts, vampires, angels and even sinister Christmas. It's about time that they got to the whole D&D-music style, and they pull it off quite nicely -- atmospheric and heavy, but the guys know when to lighten the mood with some more ethereal songs, and that not every song should be a hard-rocker about a battle -- there are magical moments as well.

In fact, this is sort of a story album, although the story is more or less yours to fill in. Nox Arcana uses heavy percussion, gongs, some well-played bagpipes, harp and hard strings to add intense atmosphere to all of these, and listeners can easily imagine what they represent -- a nighttime chase, underground searches, a misty lake, a beautiful palace, evil armies attacking a castle, or even.... yes, a dragon.

"The Siege" is the pinnacle of this, since it actually sounds like a battle -- war horns, ominous chants, stamping feet. Then the album really takes off, right up to the rousing, inspiring finale "Eternal Heroes" -- it's up to the listener what has happened, but the rousing feeling of it is clear.

Steeped in atmosphere, and rich with solid instrumentation, "Blood of the Dragon" is a must-have for D&D and/or fantasy geeks.

In just a few short years, Nox Arcana has pioneered and perfected the gothic instrumental genre, and now they have taken the genre to an entirely new level.
"Blood of the Dragon" is an arresting symphonic experience that takes the listener on a journey back to a mythic, medieval world populated by sorcerers, warring knights and lethal dragons. This setting provides a rich canvas for Joseph Vargo and William Piotrowski to work their magic, and the composers deliver crisp, memorable melodies brought to life with the most intricate and impressive orchestrations Nox Arcana has yet created. Strings, horns and percussion are backed by stirring choirs and sound effects that easily conjure images of clashing swords, marching armies and awe-inspiring dragons. One of the CD's highlights is "Highland Storm," in which an urgent violin melodically chases a rhythm of pounding war drums, evoking images of horsemen racing across a storm-tossed plain. Another standout piece is the stark, slower-paced "Rogue's Hollow," a haunting mandolin song that showcases Nox Arcana's uncanny ability to craft elegant, meditative melodies that will linger in the listener's mind long after the CD has ended. Jeff Endemann's impressive guest vocal on the ballad-like "Treasure of the Four Crowns" is yet another CD highlight, demonstrating how Nox Arcana can move easily among musical styles, from stirring, symphonic war anthems to moody ballads and minstrel pieces.

Whether it be by sword, sorcery or just plain creative genius Nox Arcana has stirred up an amazing alchemical mix of power-filled and haunting tunes. The bardic voice of guest vocalist Jeff Endemann is so heartbreakingly beautiful on "The Treasure of the Four Crowns" one can just imagine a lone shadow wandering a windswept cliff singing to the soul of those who would answer the call to this ancient quest. Vargo and Piotrowski lay out a feast fit for Kings and Queens- a feast for the ears, the eyes (Vargo's artwork adorns the accompanying booklet) and the heart that hungers for magick, mystery and a majesty of dizzying proportions. Escape to this realm and claim your right to the Blood of the Dragon.

All those who would seek a majestic musical opus will do well to pay heed. A new tale has been woven by night's most masterful minstrels. 'Tis a grand tale indeed, of mystery, intrigue, danger, honor, glory, vegeance, and treasure beyond the reckoning of many a mortal mind. Behold, "Blood Of The Dragon" stirs from it's ages-long slumber, and what an adventure it is upon which any listener shall be invited to embark.

1. Ancient Legacy - The very first moments of this tell me we are in for a much different tale, and a grand thing it is. The music does not drift in gradually and 'creep' up on us. No, instead a powerful bass drum hit and rousing choral passages immediately throw us right into the middle of this epic. It calls to mind a clear sky with clouds drifting in over a bloodred sunset as we are given a panoramic view of a lush and rugged landscape, then taken into a village where a white-robed bard or sage dark of hair and piercing of eye sits among those gathered about a fire to begin his tale:

"In the time of the ancient gods, dragons ruled the skies and kingdoms rose and fell at the end of a sword. Legendary quests beckoned with the promise of danger and glory, and only a brave few dared to heed the call. For honor and vengeance the ventured forth with steel and sorcery to combat the merciless legions of darkness. For it was said that those who answered the call were possessed of the warrior spirit, and the blood of the dragon flowed through their veins."

This stirring preamble is underscored by a compelling mixture of strings and soft drums. At its conclusion, the piece is closed out brilliantly with more strings, soft percussion, rousing choral work, and the drawing of a sword.

2. The Quest Begins- If I had to use three words to describe this piece, they would be 'pageantry' 'hope' and 'beauty'. It's a wonderful blending of stirring string work, beautiful chorus, majestic horns and blood-pumping drumbs. It is easy for me to depict an army of valliant knights and warriors preparing to venture forth to accomplish the bidding of their king amdist grand spectacle amidst tender farewells to loved ones and the hope of a glorious return.

3. Citadel Of Secrets- This piece really impresses me with effective simplicity. With no more than a choir and a tolling bell, Nox Arcana is able to convey mystery, melancholy, wonder, reverence and power.Within my mind I see a candlelit temple where the guardians of vital ancient knowledge remain ever vigilant and secluded, yet willing and able to aid any who dare to seek them, that they might grant the boon of much needed knowledge and lore.

4. Sorceror- Chorus, drums, and swirling strings do a fantastic 'waltz' here. The chorus is especially majestic and powerful but everything blends wonderfully as the piece to me depicts a wise wizard working his craft expertly, that he might aid those embarked upon a vital quest filled with great peril.

5. Treasure Of The Four Crowns- I'll get right to the point for this one. This is a beautiful ballad. A heart-tugging blend of guitar, exotic percussion and gentle flute is combined with the bardic voice of guest vocalist Jeff Endemann. The blending of that voice with a solemn narration by Joseph Vargo in the middle of this piece works pure magic. It is a beautiful ode to a perilous quest for an ancient artefact prized of many for its power to grant immortality upon the worthy finder.

6. Highland Storm- A majestic musical movement, easily worthy to depict a tale straight out of Celtic myth. Rousing and blood-stirring Highland pipes start us off. The thunder of the bodhran soon appears, first mating with the pipes in a mighty slow thunder, and then picking up in pace to a gallop as it is overlaid with wonderful fidle work. I love the choral and cello work in this one too, and the mix of the Irish Uilleann pipes into it all. Taken together, this calls to mind misty emerald fields, meadows, and mountains through which warriors both mounted and afoot charge into and engage in desperate clash, beneath overcast and weeping grey skies as thunder and lightning mightily sing together, crashing and flashing repeatedly through the heavens.

7. Mist Loch- This is a perfect blend of beauty, mystery, menace and wonder. A beautiful harp passage is mated with a haunting siren's call. I love the feel imparted by the deep bass instrument, and the feeling of ominous dread invoked by it as it couples with a tolling bell Together, thest things show me a murky mist-clad waterway through which a regal songstress guides us with her voice and harp. The question is, to where, and what awaits ahead?

8. Underworld- I was initially surprised how much I love this piece, but love it I do. Despite it's darkly suggestive title, this piece is anything but PURELY dark to the point of becoming drab. It is dark indeed but it has sense of awe and wonder in it and is very much a rousing piece too. Pounding drums and a deep bass instrument that sounds to me a bit luke a tuba in it's depth of tone start us off... blending with strings that give us both a sense of adventure and urgency together. It is as if now the mighty hero has crossed the lake of mist and is entering deep dark caverns, exploring their secrets with his brothers in arms on the way to whatever lies ahead on his quest. The choral work in this peice lends a majestic power and magnifies the intensity tenfold.

9. The Mystic's Keep- Here, we get exotic. The feel to me is heavily Egyptian, Middle Eastern and Arabic. What sounds like a sort of gong is blended with invigorating Middle Eastern style percussion and tambourines. The piece is embellished further by boisterous male and pretty and soft female choral work, as well beautiful guitar and harp in the back of the piece and a rythmic powerful chant performed by co-composer Joseph Vargo in the front. To me, in my mind I see a a dimly lit but welcoming hidden sanctuary, nestled deep within perilous caverns. It is a haven where brave adventures may partake of brief rest and gain new information from a reclusive but wise denizen. The deeper bass drumming is especially strong here.

10. Stygian Depths- This piece is a mood setter as much as anything. It is comprised of the sound of wind, blending with a deeply booming drum and what appears to me to be the sounding of a great and ancient dark battle horn. The wind has an eerie howling moan effect to it that works wonders for the piece. It invokes pure dread as we await the imminent peril that is certain to come our way, and is a perfect segue for us into...

11. Legions Of Darkness - Tense and pounding strings and drums blend with a deep horn and male choir here to take us on this part of the journey. I love how the clash of swords and what sounds like chainmail-guarded footsteps blend with the percussion. A tolling bell makes a nice appearance too. To me this arrangement is dead-on as a fit for the title, depicting a meeting with relentless armies emerging from the depths both to confront and hinder adventurers that would dare to come. The final tolling bell is a very nice touch.

12. Steeds Of Thunder- Here we are aurally gifted and presented with deep rousing horns and thunderous pounding drums. They dance for us with powerful male and female choir and urgent strings. Mighty equine beasts are easily visualized, kicking up great clouds of dust and trodden earth as they gallop across great majestic fields. The powerful chorus compounds the already tremendous strength of this piece.

13. Rogue's Hollow- I am amazed by this. Why, you ask? Two words: Simple beauty. With no more than a pair of guitars, Nox Arcana depicts a homey sanctuary nestled within a lovely glade It is a place of rest come upon after the headlong dash through vast and perilous fileds and lands. It is a welcome and gorgeous quiet moment amidst the bombastic musical storms of the quest.

14. Warrior's Dawn- I see this is the antithesis of "Legions Of Darkness". Thundering drums mate with vigorous strings and choral work possessed of colossal strength. While still solemn in character, I see this piece as noble in its cast as well, while the other was sinister in its own way. The choir in this is very very strong, and I love the blending of the deeper bass drums with the galloping militaristic thunder of the snare drum and the booming resonant voice of what sounds to me like the Irish bodhran or the Japanese taiko. The occasional clash of swords within this piece is a beautiful percussive touch.

15 The Siege - A deep bass drone begins this one. It is soon blending with heavy slow drumming, invigorating but chilling choral chant, and brooding horns. After what sounds like a rousing battle cheer, the drumming kicks into VERY high gear, becoming a thunderous charge. That charge is lent extra power by the blended song of male and female choir, and the tensely swirling strings that drift through the chorus as the pounding percussion intensifies more and more, building to a breath-stealing climax.

16. Dragon Riders- I love this piece. It has resonant millitaristic drumming and urgent strings. They combine with majestic soaring horns and heart-pounding chorus to depict in my mind an army of airborned mighty warriors and the regal beasts they ride into desperate battle, contesting mightily with each other within darkened flame-streaked skies

17. Flame Tongue- This is a great heart-pounder of an ambient 'mood' track. The movement of great wings is combined with distant growls. Eventually they intensify in volume. The heart-stopping climax that also induced a smile of awe for me, comes when a pair of positively mighty roars are given, and combined with crackling flame. It was everything I had envisioned for a moment like this.

18. Defenders Of The Realm- Here we go! Now we get another touch of grand heroism! Deep and pounding drums blend once more with swirling strings and majestic choir as well as some very powerful horn passages. This time, the battle is turning in our favor. You see, we've got some tough hombres on our side too! I love the pure power of this piece It's an invigorating anthem for our land's heroes that I never tire of hearing. My mind depicts mighty heroic warriors rushing to meet the enemy within our keep, engaging in herculean battle within the keep as boiling oil and huge boulders rain down from above...Valiant archers lend their skill as well, firing swiftly and true upon the foes straining to breach our defenses, but failing in the end as our brave and mighty guardians save the day.

19. Chamber Of The Immortals- I will be bold and declare that this is the MOST BEAUTIFUL piece of music that Nox Arcana has EVER done to date. From the very beginning, the floodgates FLEW open for me and they absolutely would not stop. I immediately envisioned a beautiful crowned queen with long flowing hair clad in a pristine white gown standing amidst a magnificent treasure filled chapel-like room with brilliant light streaming in through crystal-forged 'windows' almost like stained glass, but crystalline in nature. I envisioned a mighty, steadfast and most noble warrior being given assurance of undreamed of glory, but that one final peril lay ahead for him to face. An even greater poignancy and power is lent to the peice by the blended chorus, and the soft drums and strings that augment it at the climax. The whole piece is heartstirring and heavily awash in pure loveliness.

20. Blood Of The Dragon- I LOVE 'thematic' compositions. Here, we get one of those, and it is grand and epic in it's power, scope, and stregnth. As with "Ancient Legacy", we are immediately gifted with a solitary bombastic bass drum hit blended with wonderful and regal choral melody. Instead of narration, this time we get to hear a blood-stirring combination of soft strings, drums and choir. Eventually, they all increase in strength and volume, and in power. They blend wonderfully to dominate the piece, mixing to comprise a composition replete with kingly intensity, depicting in my mind a colossal personal final battle between a mighty paladin of justice and a nefarious warrior king of dreaded repute. My favorite part is the POWERFUL chorus but the way the drums and the strings blend with it is absolutely stunning. The deep horns I heard near the end closed it brilliantly. Many times I have cried for awe when listening to this one.

21. Eternal Champions- Here we are, at last... facing the climax of this grand and epic quest. Here, we are at first gently washed over by a pounding three-hit drumbeat that alternates between three, four, five or more beats per measure. That is blended with powerful choir and tolling bells. Very soon, very comes the powerful bombast of regal horns and strings. This will stir the blood for certain. Further power is given bye an intense choral melody and song. I love the sword clashes that are part of the percussiveness of this piece. I adore the heart-pounding blend of everything: Drums, chorus, strings, horns, sword-clash and more. All told, it is a more than fitting closer to the disc. What I really love is how the horns and the strings will 'take turns' withing the piece. On the first 'run' the horns come to the front of the melody while the strings stay in the back. In the second 'run', the strings come to the front and the strings retreat a bit, but never "too much". It is just the right blend. In the final 'run' the horns and strings blend together equally, mixing with everything else to bring the tale to a stunning conclusion. All told, this song is a heroic fanfare very much befitting a victorious warrior and his band of bretheren. In my mind is depicted a mighty paladin of justice and right being gifted by the Lady seen in the Chamber Of The Immortals with the treasure long-sought by many, earning immortality and his rightful place in legend and lore, then freely going home at last with his faithful companions and his valiant bretheren in arms.

There's one thing more that I will say. Do not hit 'stop' on your CD player when Eternal Champions goes quiet. The bonus tracks here are brilliantly done, and they each induced a smile from me in their own way and for their own reason.

In closing, if you are a fan of Nox Arcana, you owe it to yourself to get "Blood Of The Dragon". If you are not a fan, one listen to "Blood Of The Dragon" may be enough to make you a fan forever. It is a step into new territory for Nox Arcana, and what a great and tremendous step it is. They have meticulously crafted a beautiful, majestic, heartpounding, blood-stirring and soul-sooothing epic fantasy musical opus that could easily stand admidst the company of nearly any Hollywood fantasy movie score. It is a fantastic tale unlike any other that I have ever experienced. Come forth and embark upon this epic quest. It shall not be regretted. No, truly 'tis most likely that it shall be loved, as it is with me.

The theme of this invigorating Classical / Mideival opus is that of Fantasy-Action-Adventure, with music reminiscent of Highlander at some points, with a distinct Dungeons & Dragons flavor. A veritable soundtrack to warrior escapades into realms of myth and legend, dragons and knights, misty lochs, Sorcerers and maidens fair. Great musick to plunge the depths of the imagination to accompany many mental adventures, with narrations from a veritable "Over Watcher" leads you into places only dreamed of in dark lore fane.

The Ancient Legacy beckons The Mighty as The Quest Begins. The Citadel of Secrets awaits your entrance, towering from knotted vines and black iron gates. Can you translate the ancient runes encribed on yellowed scrolls to lead you to the next great discovery? Deep within the lambent temple dim by flickering torch flame, consult The Sorcerer to find the Treasure of The Four Crowns, where your journey twists along dark paths amidst the Highland Storm unto the enchanting Mist Loch where many mysteries dwell, transmutating fog swirls about you revealing ghostly forms and phantom faces; a gateway to the Underworld opens beyond The Mystic's Keep, leading down through the Stygian Depths where the Legions of Darkness await. Hellfires leap from below with vengeful demonic cries, whose denizens shall soon pillage the land. Steeds of Thunder shake the heavens and quake the earth in their terrible wrath as baneful spectres emerge with eyes aglow in infernal light.

Rogue's Hollow there dwells shrouded in a haze of ancient spell as the Warrior's Dawn glows red, an omen of what is to come. With hearts pounding, The Siege yields Dragon Riders sillhouetted upon the horizon, as the fearsome Flame Tongue spreads across the bloodied land. Defenders of The Realm rise up to battle these shadowy phantoms with warcries echoing through the ages. Within the marble-laden Chamber of The Immortals, the living gods are present, and with the Blood of The Dragon, hail the Eternal Champions evermore.

As usual, the actual CD and booklet are splendidly elegant, filled with marvellous artwork {including a topographical map of Draconia}, and accentuating storylines.

Dare you step through the arcane portal into fabled dangerous dimensions to face nightmarish creatures and bewitching beings who rise up from the Stygian depths? Can you solve the riddle and survive to become part of the legend, or perish where many mighty have fallen...
