Amazon.com essential recording
Notable for her meditations on relationships, the ties that bind families ("Mary and Omie"), and the journeys that threaten to break lives apart ("I'm Not Driving This Wheel"), Nanci Griffith continued to stretch the boundaries of folk narrative with her third album. Musically, the arrangements are perfectly in keeping with her previous acoustic orchestrations--Griffith's records may seem spare, although the layers of cello, mandolins, and Dobros add signature texture--but lyrically she pushes beyond easy melancholy and into the weightier subject of love's struggle against time and distance. --Roy Kasten

Take A Little Spin..........2006-02-11
My favorite Nanci Griffith CD.
This is still in her pre-political period, where one could listen to some wonderful folk tales without being forced to listen to political pap that you may or may not agree with. I don't know about you, but a musician's views on world situations leave me empty and sound rather dated after a while. Which is why I like this CD so much. The tunes on this disc all tell a story of their own, taking the listener on many different journeys, and away from the problems of our worldly situations. And these songs will sound fresh a hundred years from now.
My particular favorite is Ballad of Robin Winter-Smith for no other reason than I love Nanci's vocals in it. Also, Spin On A Red Brick Floor is another wonderful tune on which Ms. Griffith sings of a favorite club of her's located in (I believe) Texas. By the way, she sings the whole first verse without taking a breath!
I'm not Driving These Wheels could have been an FM rocker, with its driving beat. And the title tune is just beautiful.
Notice I didn't write much on her lyrics. The stories Nanci tells in these earlier recordings warrant the listener to come up with their own "pictures" as they listen. Nanci's voice, in her prime here, suits the music and words perfectly.
Once In A Very Blue Moon and the follow up Last Of The True Believers are two of the best folk rock / storytelling CD's out there.
Nanci at her finest.
Incredible CD.......2005-06-29
This is a masterpiece. It ranks up there with Carly Simon's "Another Passenger" or Joan Armatrading's self titled CD. All thirteen tracks are well written with great instrumentation and spirited vocals from Nanci.
another Nanci gem.......2002-02-26
A wonderfull remastering job done to her first three cd's,these now have a much more detailed and warm sound, the instruments which were previosly buried now all have a very nice clarity. The matriel on all three of these early discs is fairly similiar featuring Nanci's very vivid songwriting with a folk/country backing.Nanci's best versions of her songs have always been live ones, check out her cd One Fair Summers Eve for the definitive versions of many of these songs after you have explored the originals

Customer Reviews:
The best.......2007-01-09
Mabel Mercer is so sophisticated and accomplished that she delivers songs with a simplicity unfolding the complexity of music, lyrics and emotion.
And the songs she chooses are just wonderful.
Simply Elegant.......2002-04-16
It is impossible to describe Mabel Mercer. She is as unique as Blossom Dearie, Tammy Grimes, Elaine Stritch, Bea Lilly, or Edith Piaf, but not nearly as unusual as any of them. Fred Astaire's style might be closest to hers, although Mercer had a better voice with a greater range. Both were songwriter's singers - interpreters who put the song before the personality, who presented the work paying complete attention to the nuances of the music and the exposition of the lyrics. The song spoke for itself. Among current mainstream performers, perhaps most reminiscent of Mabel Mercer is Rosemary Clooney, although Clooney's direction - and she is superb - is not to distill the songs to quite so pure an essence as did Astaire and Mercer.
If elegance is restraint of ornament allied with purity of form and richness of substance, then Mabel Mercer is simply elegant.
Among this rich substance there are some evergreens like "I'm Glad I'm Not Young Anymore," '"Loverly," "Young and Foolish," and, perhaps, "Blame It On My Youth". But most of these songs were obscure even when the albums were recorded in 1956 and 1958, and the passing of more than 40 years has not shed any more light on them. Some are minor works of major composers and lyricists: Romberg, Hammerstein, Kern, Rodgers, Hart, Lerner, Lowe, Coward, the Gershwins, Arlen, Mercer, Bernstein, Comden and Green. Others are works of a group of less known talent: Howard, Wilder, Levant, Coleman, and Grant. But all tell simple stories or present poignant images, and after a night at the theater Mercer's 11:30 PM audience was ready for gentle songs of quiet reflection made, perhaps, even more evocative by their very unfamiliarity.
Almost all of the songs are about love at some stage: anticipation ("Wait Til You See Her"), yearning ("Lonely Little Boy"), despair ("Blue Moon," "If Love Were All'), fulfillment ("Some Other Time"), loss ("He Was Too Good To Me," "Guess I'll Go Back Home"), lost youth ("Isn't It a Pity," "Young and Foolish"), and gained wisdom ("Once Around the Clock," "Sail Away").
Most of the lyrics are of the Seine/champagne variety, although of course there is Noel Coward with this rhyming full-house ("though I never really grumble life's a jumble indeed, and in my efforts to succeed I've had to formulate a creed"), and Ira Gershwin shows his usual virtuosity in "Isn't it a Pity":
Think of all the lonely nights we've wasted: I with the neighbors, you at silly labors,
What joys untasted: I reading Heine, you somewhere in China
. . .
Think of all the lonely years we've wasted: fishing for salmon, loosing at backgammon,
What joys untasted: my nights were sour spent with Schopenhauer
Mercer adds only the most subtle trace of distaste to the word "Schopenhauer." In "Guess I'll go Back Home" she adds just the slightest emphasis to the first "he": "I'll walk by the house where he used to live, I hope he married well." It's the verbal equivalent of a slightly raised eyebrow or an up-turned palm.
On "Midnight at Mabel Mercer's" the accompaniment is provided by two pianos. The pianos are particularly well arranged on "Sonnet," " Wait Til you See Her," and especially "Young and Foolish." On "Once in a Blue Moon" strings are added. Even at this point in her career, Mercer had the ability to overpower the accompaniment. She chose not to, and the strings are distracting.
Two discs of Mercer magic.......2001-07-20
There's an abundance of Mercer riches to be savored on this generous two disc set. "Once in a Blue Moon," on which Mercer is accompanied by piano and a small string section, is a sentimental favorite of many, and for good reason: Mercer has rarely been more affecting than in the title track and her famous version of "My Shining Hour," and the string arrangements are admirably restrained, accentuating Mercer's message rather than imposing false sentiment on top of her interpretations. But it's "Midnight at Mabel Mercer's" that is the real gem here: it offers an opportunity to hear Mercer much as she must have sounded in her legendary New York appearances in the 40's and 50's, accompanied only by piano (two in this recording) and singing uninhibitedly full-out, going for the climaxes of the songs whether the notes are in her voice or not (and quite often they aren't). A word must be said about "the voice" to those unfamiliar with Mercer--there isn't, by the fifties, when these recordings were made, much of it left, though it sounds as though it must have been a perfectly good mezzo in its prime. Just the same it's hard to think of a more eloquent singer of popular song. As skilled at tossing off a frothy number like "Wouldn't it be Loverly" with just the right light touch as she is in revealing all the genuine sadness and regret in potentially maudlin ballads like "Poor Pierrot" or "Young and Foolish," Mercer has that ability to communicate that no amount of stunning vocal chops can compensate for. Sure, there's a lot of creakiness here and there, flubbed top notes and odd rolled r's, but give her a chance and you'll find the tattered velvet of Mercer's voice enormously appealing.
At last!.......2001-04-05
Mabel Mercer's recordings on CD are hard to find, and, indeed, some exquisite sets have never been released on CD, to my knowledge. ("The Art of Mabel Mercer" is particularly to-be-hoped-for.) This 2-CD set includes perhaps the sweetest of Mercer's collections, "Once in a Blue Moon". I was unfamiliar with "Midnight at Mabel Mercer's", but its bill of fare is so varied and so velvetly sung that I was immediately captivated.
Mabel Mercer is, I know, an acquired taste, but, for those in the process of acquiring the taste, this selection is a splendid introduction.
Mabel Mercer: Simply the Best.......2000-10-18
I am extremely pleased to see that some of Mabel Mercer's finest work on vinyl is finally being reissued on compact disc. Her recording of "Isn't It A Pity" included in this set makes a great song even greater for no one was able to interpret a lyric like the incomparable Mabel Mercer. Her singing of "Once in A Blue Moon" accompanied by an extraordinarily beautiful arrangement is worth the price alone and I cannot recommend highly enough this collection for any true Mercer fan. "I'm Glad I'm Not Young Anymore", "Blame It On My Youth" and Noel Coward's "Sail Away" are particular standouts among the gems included here. A great big thank you to the producer of this superlative set--an absolute must buy! A true artist sadly missed!

Here's a disc of 19 familiar and unfamiliar Kurt Weill songs arranged for dance band and played by an expert group of specialists in Roaring Twenties band music. They're led by singer-conductor-composer H.K. Gruber, whose previous recordings include Weill's Die Dreigroschenoper. The result is a start-to-finish delight. From the first notes, you're beamed back in time to one of those sleek transatlantic passenger liners, sitting in an art deco ballroom watching elegant couples in tuxedos and ball-gowns swirl by while the band plays hits from Weill's German and Broadway triumphs. Sure, the venom is leached from the originals, but who needs agitprop when you're on a dance floor? The arrangements are by a variety of hands, hired by Weill's European and American publishers with his approval to get more mileage from his musical theater works. They're delightfully square rhythmically and formulaic in transferring Weill's music to conventional dance bands, but the music still holds up and is fun to hear in its new clothes. A special treat is the eight tracks with Max Raabe, whose light tenor and falsetto singing preserve the spirit of Weill's songs, as well as perfectly mimic the boy band singers of times gone by. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
SAIL ON, KURT!.......2006-04-23
I wouldn't take offence here oh, Weill purists! These reconstructions are charming and harmonically reverent to their originals, more than could be said for many versions of the Weill Songbook through the decades, including Lou Reed's friendly `adaptation' of the September Song's chord progression and melodic line!
Shoenberg and Webern expressed their disdain of Weill's music; curiously, Arnold had also disclosed a secret wish of having his own audiences walk back home "whistling his tunes", oh, don't ask why... You can certainly whistle, hum and sway your partner now, as the transatlantic's bouncy dancehall sails on just as Kurt, Lotte and the lot of them did when escaping the lethal hounds of early 30s Berlin.... the-next-little-dollar bound.
Not at All Vile Weill.......2001-08-13
The ever versatile HK Gruber has done it again digging up these gorgeous dance arrangements for Weill's music--proving, if anything, Weill's versatility. Anyone familiar with the Capriccio historical Weill recordings will be aware of the long tradition of dance bands taking Weill's music as the lead for dance music or pop music incarnations (all the way up through the more obvious appropriations familiar to Americans: Mack the Knife and September Song). Hardly MUZAK arrangements (listen to the delicate violin in track 17's "What Good Would the Moon Be" to hear what I mean), this generous helping of 19 songs offers a chance to see Weill through a delightfully different but entirely compatible lens. Max Raabe provides the ideal vocal compliment on 8 of the tracks, his tenor floating effortlessly into his head voice suggesting a "period" sound reminiscent of Bing Crosby. The import title for this disc is "Charming Weill," and that modest adjective expresses the least of its virtues.
ELEVATOR MUSIC.......2001-05-23
This is a very strange CD: why would anyone want to take the quirky rhythms and melodies of the great Kurt Weill and "tame" them into dance arrangements? Certainly one has listened to (& even perhaps admired) dance arrangements of composers from Victor Herbert to Cole Porter to Jerry Herman, but these are all, if you will, main stream composers-- men whose music sounds good in original Broadway or Hollywood arrangements and just as good (or almost as good) as played by a dance band...think "Begin The Beguine" as done by Fred Astaire on film or "Begin The Beguine" done by Jo Stafford with the Paul Weston Orchestra.
But Weill was an innovator: a man who can still be listened to experiencing the thrill of something fresh and new. One immediately thinks of his collaborations with Bertolt Brecht in Germany: "Threepenny Opera" and "The Rise & Fall Of The City of Mahagonny" or "The Seven Deadly Sins", etc. his American opera, "Street Scene" with Langston Hughes or his American musical plays: "One Touch of Venus" with Ogden Nash or "Love Life" with Alan Jay Lerner, etc. The songs on this CD all deserve great recordings from the "Alabama Song" to "September Song" but they turn into a kind of flattened elevator music instead of having fresh interpretations or even more traditional ones. What happens is that the longing in "What Good Would the Moon Be" and the romance of "Speak Low" and the raucousness of "Bilbao Song" are all much too similar and much too easy.
It's a little weird to think of husbands whispering to their wives," Listen, honey, they're playing 'As You Make Your Bed' from "Mahagonny".........let's fox trot!"

Better than what I had expected.......2003-01-20
I'm quite satisfied with this cd. I must be truthful however, I mainly bought this cd because of the MICK TAYLOR FACTOR. Taylor plays some mean lead guitar on Micks Jam. I am nearly as impressed with Gerry Groom. His slide guitar is great, and his vocals are pretty cool to. I enjoy having a lot of covers on here, Little Red Rooster, Suzie Q, Robert Johnson's When you Got a Good Friend, Catfish Blues, and also the two versions of the other Muddy Waters song on here - I can't be Satisfied. This cd is a must for Mick Taylor fans, blues fans, slide guitar fans, and many others
Why wasn't this man a blues star?.......1999-08-08
Most people discover this recording when a friend runs breathlessly into their living space shouting something like "You've got to hear this! This guy is unbelievable!" One listen confirms. Groom was apparently a protege of Duane Allman, and he does sport the same devil-may-care attitude in his slide guitar playing, but he was his own man. Evidently one of the long line of bluesman (albiet white and ordinary looking) to succumb to drink and drugs and plain bad luck, Groom sang with conviction and played like a man possessed. This recording features pristine sonic quality, and the live in the room sound of a gathering of friends playing mostly for themselves. The song choices may look cliche at first glance, but Groom makes all of them his own. Mick Taylor plays (somewhat uncharistically) tasteful support, and Groom supports Taylor well on his solos. For the most part, Groom plays a battered old wooden body resonator guitar, and the mix with the otherwise electric band is tasteful. Groom's vocals are somewhat pedestrian compared to his amazing guitar ability, but certainly serviceable. The only sad part of the recording is realizing that the late Groom will no longer be making this jewels. Well worth seeking out, and just shy of perfect. Keep it on the shelf next to "Layla," as another white blues masterpiece.

This is one of the greatest instrumental talents I've heard in years. This cd has some of my all-time favorite movie tunes including 'Moon River', 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow', and a very beautiful version of 'My Heart Will Go On'. This is the actual band that played in the 1997 movie Titanic and I'm truly thankful that they made this recording for everyone to enjoy. I'll cherish it for years to come. Thank you!
Familiar music with good performance.......1999-10-03
This CD contains many familiar music from films and the performance of the musicians is very good particularly track 16. I also find the music very relax and enjoyable and can bring the memory of those films if one has ever seen them.

Perfect for an Acoustic Weekend.......2006-09-05
Once In A Blue Moon; is a jazzy, percussion, acoustic album. The horns and snares and vocals bring the jazzy funk. I've had this cd since its release and when I am looking for an upbeat but relaxing cd this is one that often makes the weekend rotation. It is an acoustic vocal cd. No B's & H's just Old School groove. When I play it during get togethers People are often surprised that it is FMOB. Have you ever heard a song and thought "That would be a really nice groove without those words and bleeps"? Well,This is that cd.
