They set out to nail down a defining moment in their career, the MercyMe golden spike if you will. The goal for Coming Up to Breathe was a genre groundbreaking release such as Amy Grant's Lead Me On or U2's The Joshua Tree. While it's hard to go that far, it's safe to say that MercyMe's artistic integrity has met commercial appeal somewhere in the middle with Coming Up to Breathe. The one-time worship band certainly know how to write a hit and they bring us more of the same with radio-ready tracks like "So Long Self," "Last One Standing," and "Safe and Sound." But lead man Bart Millard digs a little deeper on the self-revealing "No More No Less" and "One Trick Pony." Lyrically both tracks reveal a band unapologetic about their faith and creative destiny. "Pony" is a pleasant divergence with its slide guitar and Mississippi mud atmosphere, conjuring up images of the band sitting at a crossroads somewhere in the Southland. MercyMe has never been afraid to show their musical influences on their sleeve. That's why you shouldn't be surprised by the Edge-like guitars on "Something About You" or even the pounding rhythm chords of "Hold Fast," which evoke Coldplay comparisons. So it's that struggle between creating something new and holding true to your principles that the band spells out for us. Perhaps Millard sums this up best on "3:42 AM (Writer's Block)" when he sings of a man out of words but not out of passion to allow God to speak through him. That's always been the aim of MercyMe and in this case, their hammer has driven this spike solidly into the ground. --Michael Lyttle
Album Description
Certain albums are obvious landmarks in the history of Christian music. These are the times when vision meets talent in a divine appointment that produces a collection of songs that help define an artist's career: WhiteHeart's 'Freedom', Amy Grant's 'Lead Me On', dcTalk's 'Jesus Freak', and Michael W. Smith's 'Eye 2 Eye', among others. MercyMe's new release, 'Coming Up to Breathe', is one of those albums. Singer Bart Millard is pleased with the success of MercyMe's previous albums, but admits there's a special satisfaction in this one. "We've always joked about wanting to make our 'Freedom' or 'Lead Me On', and time will tell if that is ever the case," Millard says, "but we just gave it everything we had. There was no holding back on this record. Regardless of what you are going through in life, regardless of what you are consumed with, regardless of what fills up your everyday life, there are times you have to stop and surface and take a deep breath and remember what's important. That's what this album is for us. It's addressing everything we've gone through and realizing the one common denominator in all this is Jesus. That's what is worth taking a breath for."

Good stuff!.......2007-04-23
This is the first MercyMe album I've owned, so I can't give a thorough comparison to thier other cd's. I have listened to samples on Amazon, but I wasn't a big fan of what little I did hear, to be honest. The past albums sounded a bit too "pop/boy band-ish" for my taste. This album has a wonderful, positive message but with an organic, rockin sound that uplifts! I'm a big fan of music in general, and I have to say that this album can definitely compete (and outdo in some cases) with the 'secular' bands of today. Fans of good Christian rock would definitely love this album!
Another hit!.......2007-04-10
In the true form of MercyMe, Coming Up To Breathe is another example of their unique musical abilities.
This group is tops!
Mercy Me Rocks - or not.......2007-02-22
I'm not a big fan of rock music, but the music on Mercy Me's "Coming Up to Breathe" album is an exception.
The music is catchy, and the lyrics are right on in expressing the human conditon, yet lift the mind and the heart in praise.
The harmony on "Let Me Introduce Myself" and "Bring the Rain" are stunning, with the richness of the basses mixing so well with the lighter voices of the sopranos.
I thought it was extremely clever to write a song about the frustration of writing a song in "3:41 a.m.".
I think that this album is a valuable addition to the Christian contemporary music genre, and I'm anxious for Mercy Me to give us more.
All Thumbs Up!.......2007-02-08
I have owned this cd for a while and the more you listen to it, the richer you discover it is.
Worthy of note is that musically, they have ventured and matured beyond (even though they didnt stray so far away) from their signature sound.
It is a great listen. The arrangements are very good, some are outright innovative. There is also more chart-like pop than rock than in their previous albums, a tiny Southern influence but in my opinion but it still great.
Best of all about this cd, and being a Catholic reviewer, I must say their theology is still very sound and undiluted.
I dont prefer the radio singles over the others. They are all equally powerful tracks. Some are just so eerily personal to me
Summarily, I love 'Coming Up to Breathe'. Mercy Me has scored again and I'm glad they are who they are.
Great stuff for a first-time listener.......2007-01-20
I never heard MercyMe's stuff before this album, so I don't have anything to compare it to, which I think is nice; it's good to have a fresh ear. I never knew they did "I Can Only Imagine." (I wasn't a big fan of that song, so it's just as well.) I just happened upon this CD one day, and bought it just for kicks. I'm so glad I did. Turns out I really, really enjoy it, and have listened to it over and over without getting tired of it.
This CD is uplifting, but it's also full of excellent music that I can jam to. Those back-up vocalists are fantastic; they add a really rich dimension to the sound that you can't get from paper-thin, generic arrangements that abound out there these days. It's just different enough to set it apart from other artists, but not so different that it alienates its listeners.
I like the message. I like the sound. That's really everything I could ask for.

"Yeah, it's been a long time coming, never thought it'd take so long," moans Jonny Lang on the seemingly autobiographical title track to his first release in five years. But its stark acoustic, near demo quality is in contrast to the preceding 12 songs, which are buffed to an arena-rock sheen. The youngster has shifted from an up-and-coming bluesman into a tough, journeyman melodic rocker with a dab of R&B. He has also honed his songwriting skills, resulting in the majority of this album (except a rugged bonus live cover of Stevie Wonder's "Livin' for the City" and the first single "Red Light") being self-penned. Aiming for the back rows, Long Time Coming boasts booming, sing-along mid-tempo choruses in "Save Yourself" and "Goodbye Letter," perfect for the lighter-waving crowd. He has also transformed into a soulman of sorts, evidenced by the Prince/ Michael McDonald influences on "Touch," "Beautiful One," "The One I Got," and the funky "If We Try." Once a burgeoning guitar hero, Lang's solos are now integrated into the material, further bolstering the hard rock/soul approach. Leaving the blues, Lang has moved towards the mainstream on his most polished and radio-ready album yet. --Hal Horowitz
Customer Reviews:
To The Bargain Bin.......2007-03-21
As some have said, if you like any of his early work then DO NOT buy this disc. He has gone from blues guitar phenom to R&B to a mishmash of style. I have no problem with change but the quality just isn't on this one. I bought it early without benefit of any reviews. I tried listening to it for several weeks but it never grabbed me at all- no soul or grit. I'll have to hear something better before buying Jonny disc again.
Wander this world..........2007-01-16
Big fan of Jonny Lang.....great CD, but particularly love Wander This World.
jonny slips away.......2007-01-12
Lie to me and Wander this world are so much different and much much better, if you are a blues fan. I bought it for "Give me up again", which is in a very good version on the Clapton DVD "Crossroads Festival". The rest is more like a Prince style, Pitty, hardly any guitar, Jonny is slipping away from the blues.
A great unique sound and experience - definitely recommended .......2006-11-10
This is a great Rock-Blues album, with a unique guitar sound and touching melodies, you must be open minded to love it.
If you love the old blues records and you're looking for another stone blues - it's probably not the one for you, but if you are open minded and you like a crunchy rock sound, you will love this CD.
It reminded me the Sprinsteen rock sound but with much more blues into it.
He has evolved.......2006-10-27
The fact remains that everyone wants a Jonny Lang cd that sounds like every other Jonny Lang CD. He is amazing. Noone could believe that such a young guy could have such a soulful voice. His soulfullness has not changed just the main sound of it. This CD provided me with the satisfaction to see how versitile his music can be and I was VERY pleasantly suprised. I recommend this cd to any Jonny fan because he has proved that he is an ever evolving music artist. Amazing!

From the heart-amid the storm.......2007-06-30
These songs are both for "regular" worship and for those times when the storms of life are raging. The song that never fails to touch me is "I Will Life My Eyes": worship of God when facing unclimbable mountains, raging storms, or inner pain too deep to share...
This isn't rose-colored-glasses faith. This is faith even when life is so dark you can't see your hand in front of your face.
Bebo Norman has created a much-needed album that breathes hope and peace, whether you are in a season of joy or a season of deep trial. His voice and stylings are perfect for an album such as this.
Bebo Busts Out.......2007-06-18
I've been a Bebo fan since about 96 and have every album, including "The Fabric of Verse". This is his best since "Ten Thousand Days". It's different -- less acoustic -- than those early albums, but it represents the emergence into a new, more up-tempo, "rockier" sound that's proved elusive on the last three albums. In other words, what I feel he's been trying to do on "Try", "Myself When..." and "Big Blue Sky" he finally got it right here. The opening track sets a great tone, but that best ones to me are "Time Takes It's Toll" and "The Way We Mend". They are excellent songs that are as strong lyrically as they are musically. Catchy in a way that few of his songs since "Ten Thousand Days" have been. I highly recommend this album to any Bebo fan, and indeed any fan of good Christian pop music.
Feed a starving heart!.......2007-05-24
I have been a Bebo fan since 'back in the day' when he used to do warm-up for Caedmon's Call in smallish college venues. This CD is outstanding. I find the outcome of the threefold strand of his lyrics, his music and his expression to be a rare triumph. In a day where most of contemporary Christian music is embarassingly anemic, predictable and repetitious, this CD is fresh and like water in the desert. It brings my spirit to LIFE.Bebo has obviously been through personal brokenness and this CD sounds to me like he channeled said struggle as a precious musical offering for fellow struggling sojourners.(Hmmmm...the broken alabaster jar of exquisite perfume comes to mind..)
Nice CD.......2007-05-14
This is the first time I listened to one of Bebo Norman's CD's--and I bought it for one song. So I have nothing to compare it with. I have njoyed this CD, but would probably not buy another.
Sorry, Bebo........2007-04-06
I own all of Bebo Norman's CDs, and I LOVE all of them, except for this one. I bought it and listened to it once, and I hated it. It does not sound like Bebo. This sounds like Steven Curtis Chapman or Michael W. Smith or any of the other mass produced Christian/pop music artists. On all of his previous albums, even though he changed his sound slightly, it was still generally very acoustic and Bebo-ish. This album sounds nothing like his previous music. I was disappointed.

Leave the daddy-daughter dynamics for People magazine to dissect, but one thing's for sure: with Coming Home, Lionel Richie may divebomb the spotlight so completely that daughter Nicole ends up a shadowy speck in the celebrity haze. Unlike virtually every other high-profile R&B record to arrive in recent years, Coming Home resists the temptation to lean back, even a little, on its dazzled-up list of collaborators, Jermaine Dupri, Raphael Saadiq, and Dallas Austin among them. Hot beats abound, especially on the dancefloor-ready "Up All Night," first single "I Call it Love," and "Why," but the overall vibe is pure Lionel, from the Commodores-esque "What You Are" to the "Penny Lover"-like prettiness of "Coming Home," to the wavy steel-guitar-laced lament that is "Outta My Head." Here are hooks that sink in instantly and vocals that float as if grafted to a bar of Ivory soap. Here, too, is a record unafraid of reaching artistically; if 2004's Just For You was dominated by classy but predictable ballads, Coming Home represents Mr. Richie as the trailblazing musical titan generations of fans fell in love by. Turn the volume up to 11 and make room on the couch--a hotter homecoming won't happen this year. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
Simply Wonderful!.......2007-06-21
I received this cd as a gift from an uncle. I've heard many of Lionel Richie's song over the years. But, I have never owned one of his cds. My initial thought was that I could not possibly have the same musical interests as my middle-aged relative. I now realize that real music transcends age. I love this cd! I play it all the way through... My favorites are "I'm Coming Home" and "Why". Sorry I ever doubted my uncle's recommendation!
Not perfect, but pretty close.......2007-06-16
I have to admit, I was initially interested in this cd because of "I Call It Love". That song would have been enough but when I previewed the rest of the songs, it definitely put it over the edge for me. There are only a couple of songs that I don't like as much as the rest ("I Love You" and "All Around the World"), but I never expect to love every song on an album, so I wasn't disappointed.
The whole cd is really solid, and I don't feel the need to skip any tracks on it. Definitely as close to perfect as most albums ever get.
Coming Home.......2007-05-28
This is the first Lionel Richie album I've bought in a long time and I bought it because of how much I enjoy the lead single, I CALL IT LOVE -although listening to it with headphones, the production & backing vocals kind of drown Lionel out it was still nice to see him chart again with such a pleasant mid tempo song.
The other tracks that I really enjoy are: SWEET VACATION; WHAT YOU ARE; I LOVE YOU; OUT OF MY HEAD & UP ALL NIGHT.
I think that the producers Lionel worked with successfully managed to contemporize songs without totally selling out his image by having guest rappers on the track to appeal to a much younger crowd. Overall I was very pleasantly surprised by the number of tracks I did like and would recommend this disc to Lionel's fans.
Old school R&B back in the hizzouse........2007-05-22
This is a very good CD. I like every cut. Lyrically and rhythmically; this CD is a solid product.
Outstanding.......2007-05-19
Lionel Richie has come back strong. His new album, "Coming Home" is very, very well put. He's letting everyone know that he is back. I hope to see more of his music come to light.

fabulous new cd.......2007-05-10
Jesus is Coming is typically fabulous Bellamy Brothers music. With all but two songs new originals from the brothers....gospel is one more genre to add to their already impressive list of accomplishments.
This cd ranges from My Faith Came Back to Me, which could be added the hymnal I grew up singing from...to I Ain't Going to Hell, which is a foot stomping yelling 'Old Time Religion' type sing along...an updated Old Hippie that can bring you to tears with a smile on your face....and what has become my favorite... Beautiful Night....I have to say this is one of the most glorious songs I have heard EVER! If I was in control, David would get a special star in heaven for writing this song.
I highly recommend this cd to anyone who is a Bellamy fan, or a gospel music fan.

Album Description
In the early days, when success was still a pipe dream, guitarist Chad Gilbert had to drop out of high school to focus on the band. Drummer Cyrus Bolooki, turned down a scholarship and a chance to follow in the footsteps of his father, who performed the first heart transplant in Florida. All the New Found Glory band members had to make sacrifices along the way to make their dream a reality. All this comes to mind on a recent sunny summer afternoon in San Diego when singer Jordan Pundik confidently calls their fifth album "the one that will stand the test of time." And then again a few days later when Gilbert declares, "We've never been happier with any other record."
"Coming Home" was even written differently. Rather than the usual tour bus and dressing room pow-wows, the band moved into a house together in Malibu called Morning View (where Incubus famously recorded their album of that name), where they sat around the living room and wrote the best songs of their lives. With Paul Miner of Death By Stereo and Warren Fitzgerald of the Vandals and Gwen Stefani's band overseeing the demos, it was like music camp, with a mission.
It only takes one listen to figure out the album opener "Oxygen" is about not being able to breathe without that special person. And the first single, "It's Not Your Fault," capturing the essence of young love and heartbreak with lyrics like, "There were rapid statements about life commitments, A Sense Of Heat, That I Couldn't Bare To Touch
"
Even the album's most poignant moment, and the one song not all about the girls, has a simple message. On the guitar-driven epic "When I Die," Gilbert addresses the 2004 death of his father. "There are always songs about death that are really sad, and this is an uplifting song that gives me strength."
When it came time to record, the band met with all the usual suspects, but decided on producer Thom Panunzio, an A&R veteran at Geffen who has recorded some of the biggest names in music history. "Because he's worked with Tom Petty and Bob Dylan, he brought this classic vibe to it, especially with the tones he got," Pundik says. "We learned we don't have to double-up 15 Mesa cabinets and make it all distorted to make it sound big."
Customer Reviews:
Keep on Keeping On.......2007-05-24
NFG only gets better. I didn't think they could top Sticks and Stones but they did it.
I adore everything New Found Glory, however if you're touchy about the pitch of a singer's voice, maybe listen to a sample before impulse buying.
Big music without a lot of indistinguishable noise. Great album.
I saw them live........2007-04-12
And I was hooked.
End of story.
This album is a must have.
Awesome!!!.......2007-02-10
This was avery surprising album for NFG. It mixes pop, punk, and other influences to create very strong, dynamic songs. All songs are good on this album and it is probably my favorite NFG album. A great album. BUY IT!!!!
New Found Glory Continues.......2006-12-16
It would seem that New Found Glory continues to produce catchy pop-punk music but with a "more mature sound". I actual enjoy the "younger" New Found Glory sound with overdriven guitars and catchy choruses. The constant theme that seems to drive New Found Glory is relationships, the make-ups and break-ups. I can't put this record at the top of my list, however. So far, my favorite album is their self-titled. If I were to introduce NFG to a friend, that would be the first record I would turn to. Songs like "Dressed to Kill", "Hit or Miss", and "Sucker" embody what NFG grew from (in my opinion).
On Coming Home, expect some of the same NFG sound. Songs like "Hold my Hand" and "Oxygen" are good openers for the album. They are able to pull the listener in. I rate both high. The album continues strong with their single "It's not your fault", "On my mind", and "Coming Home".
Funny...all of which deal with...relationships. After those five, the album starts to struggle.
"Love and Pain", as well as "Connected" are in the NFG style. "When I Die" would have been a great track finisher but instead they chose "Boulders"--a slow ballad type song.
If you find them, "Over me", "Make it Right", "Golden", and "It's all around you" all should have made the album. They are more happy and upbeat than the chosen middle tracks.
I am not disappointed in the album, but it is not my favorite. I support NFG fully, and I am very big fan. However; I hope the 6th full length record will have more marketability.
An adult who likes adult music........2006-12-14
Most reviews come from kids that just do what ever they can do to sound cool and make believe to them selves that they are hardcore...hardcore does not really exist anymore and that's ok. I like music...from Jim Brickman to Nirvana to Slayer to the Ramones and so on. This is a great CD a grown up CD. Just let the poppy punks grow up and you can grow with them...just ad water.

"For all those who have eyes and ears, it is only He who can reduce me to tears." .......2007-07-22
So Bob Dylan sings in the deeply moving "When He Returns," the closing song of his beautiful inspirational album Slow Train Coming, released in 1979. One of Dylan's greatest albums, Slow Train Coming is a collection of timeless spiritual songs that have continued to inspire and touch listeners for nearly three decades. Indeed, Slow Train Coming may very well prove to be Dylan's masterwork, a strong statement of faith that was sung without fear of what critics would think of him.
The album opens with "Gotta Serve Somebody," which earned Dylan a Grammy award for best vocal performance. "Precious Angel" is one of Slow Train Coming's best songs in which Dylan sings of his newfound faith in Christ and the woman who helped lead him down the narrow path. The only somewhat weak track on this album is "Man Gave Names To All The Animals," which sounds like a children's bible school song. Dylan was attending a bible class at the time and this likely inspired him to write it. The outtake "Ye Shall Be Changed" would have made a better album track.
I cannot recommend Slow Train Coming enough. It deserves all the praise it receives and more. Buy it and you will discover another masterpiece from Bob Dylan.
Somewhat grim.......2007-05-26
This notorious album opens with Gotta Serve Somebody, a slow edgy number with prominent female vocals in a genuine gospel style, whilst Precious Angel is a tuneful folky track. One of the most moving songs is I Believe In You, a description of the rejection often experienced by those who openly confess their faith, expressed in stirring poetic lyrics over a lovely melody line.
The title track Slow Train is a messy mid-tempo rock excursion infused with gospel backing vocals, certainly not the strongest offering on the album. Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking is a similarly downtempo rock number but with some nice organ flourishes, unfortunately a bit harsh in both sentiment and in sound.
The jerkily rhythmic Do Right To Me Baby is a pleasant enough rumination on the golden rule with some clever lyrical twists, whilst the meandering When You Gonna Wake Up is a call to repentence I suppose, but not particularly tuneful or memorable. The next one, Man Gave Names To All The Animals, is lighter and quite appealing with its gently lilting beat.
The album concludes with the stirring devotional When He Returns. One would have expected more of the Van Morrison type of mystical joyousness, but this album is often grim and uncompromising. Mercifully the aforementioned songs like Precious Angel, I Believe In You and When He Returns are lovely and comforting.
Of Dylan's religious albums, I think Shot of Love with its gems like Every Grain Of Sand and Lenny Bruce, and Infidels with tracks like Neighbourhood Bully and Jokerman are the best. Slow Train Coming is not bad at all but not an album that I often listen to. The thought of how it must have shocked the rock critics when it was released is however cause for mirth.

Slow Train CD.......2007-05-13
I've listened to Bob Dylan since he started and I still listen. Great CD, great - great - great.
Rolling Stone's Editor LOVED this album, folks. FWIW........2007-04-09
I bought the issue of Rolling Stone with Jann Wenner's review of this album when it first came out. Wenner raved about it, loved it. FWIW. Maybe he didn't have his guard up, I don't know.
Jesus as mind-numbing drug.......2007-03-02
I do like the music on this album, but am so glad Dylan is over the Jesus thang.
Musically there are better Dylan albums but this one is a solid 3 stars.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

At an age when fellow ex-Yardbirds guitar gods Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page are polishing their legend and trying to recapture it, respectively, Jeff Beck has produced one of his most challenging and rewarding albums. An edgy, metallic maelstrom with a distinctly postmodern slant (thanks largely to the tense, digitized rhythms of producer Andy Wright and drummer/programmer Aiden Love), You Had It Coming is the kind of album his fraternal fretmeisters might scarcely understand, let alone attempt. Already the guitar's unparalleled master of feedback, distortion, harmonic sorcery, and microtonal manipulation, Beck here pushes the envelope yet again. From the manic thrash-metal of "Earthquake" to the hot-rod sampled "Roy's Toy" and especially "Loose Cannon," Beck's soloing is all haunting howls and jagged corners, a nervy dance along the razor's edge of dissonance and melody. The emotionally charged changes of pace are as surprising as they are compelling: Beck exploring Eastern modalities while showcasing his arsenal of technique in a stunning take on Indian pop musician Nitin Sawhney's "Nadia"; the techno revamp of the blues staple "Rollin' and Tumblin'," fronted by the urgent vocals of Imogene Heap; Jeff literally jamming with a chirping feathered friend on "Blackbird" (while plying the frets with a table fork!); the fingerpicking funk of "Rosebud"; and the graceful, lyrical resolve of "Suspension." This is one of Beck's best and a worthy companion to Blow by Blow, Wired, and Guitar Shop. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Mediocre.......2007-01-28
I was somewhat disappointed by this CD. When I heard Beck's rendition of "Rollin' and Tumblin'" with Imogen Heap, I thought this CD would be fantastic. Instead, I found a CD that was more electronic rock than rock or blues with heavy use of the drum kit. Most of the songs didn't have any melody.
Creativity all over.......2006-09-14
Jeff Beck is far from the typical rock guitarist. He never took the easy path of showing how fast or virtuoso he is. Instead, he is full of intriguing and explosive ideas that make you want to listen to this CD over and over again. That's what musicianship is all about, and Jeff has plenty of it.
A league of his own.......2006-06-05
Quite simply: Mind-blowing. This guy has it all -- feel, edge, risk, dynamics, and damn big balls if this album is anything to go by! He's continued the theme of "Who Else?" with his experimentation of live-meets-electro backing, but this time the playing seems even more inspired. 'Earthquake' sets the bar pretty high from the outset, sounding a bit like a revved up Nine Inch Nails tune. Then we're into a stellar roll of four songs with 'Nadia' possibly hitting an all time Beck high -- fantastic beats and a touch on the geetar that sends shivers down the spine. 'Loose Cannon' has an almost elastic riff that sprawls and grooves whilst 'Left hook' wouldn't be out of place at an underground drum 'n' bass club in Brixton -- super-aggressive backing matched with super-aggressive chops. The album then rides out on a high, but toned down, note. A genius album by a genius man. Highly, highly recommended for musos and non-musos alike.
Wild.......2005-11-04
You have got to love Dirty Mind and Loose Cannon; totally wild. It's amazing how a well established artist can put together a new sound and just rock into the future.........it does sound like Beck has been spending some time under the hood of his car.
another world.......2005-09-06
I've heard this album now about 6 times. Each time it gets better. This is the only album I've heard in years that I enjoy listening to the whole album straight through. In this age of digital, I find that the sounds can be too seperated for my taste. I prefer listening to this album through my stero system (not earphones) with the speakers close together. This blends the sound better for me. Under these conditons this is a really spritual experience. I also really appreciate how the album is seemingly designed to be listened to from beginning to end. By the end I always feel better and more relaxed.
