On The Life and Times of S. Carter, Jay-Z's century-closing guaranteed-platinum album, he compares his hit-making prowess to that of Michael Jackson--the unspoken difference being that Jigga appears to be far from wearing out his commercial welcome. For good reason, too; not only is the Roc-A-Fella king maker one prolific rapper and writer, his output is of high enough quality to keep heads ringin'. While there's no single classic on the order of "Hard Knock Life" here, collaborations with Dr. Dre (the truly defiant "Watch Me"), Juvenile ("Snoopy Track"), and UGK ("Big Pimpin'") argue well for Jay-Z's continued vitality. Further proof may lie in the fact that, faced with mass bootlegging weeks before the CD's release, the Z-man added several tracks, effectively revising it at the last minute. --Rickey Wright

Jay's streak continued with Vol 3. He has some of the most potent album cuts ever. His album cuts are tighter than the majority of other rapper's singles. Could have been a classic if he had taken out 4 songs.

Top Joints:
Hova Song (intro)
So Ghetto
Do It Again (Put Ya Hands Up)
Dope Man
It's Hot (Some Like It Hot) (A little heat for 50)
Snoopy Track (featuring Juvenile) (Should have been a single)
S. Carter (featuring Amil)
Big Pimpin' (featuring UGK) Classic!
There's Been A Murder (Tight)
Come And Get Me (Shots to give)

5 out of 5 stars Close to being great..........2006-10-03

Anyone who liked volume II has to buy this album. Although admittedly a few songs fall flat, this is still a superb record. I really
think this was one of the best rap albums released back when rap was actually good aka pre 2002.

There are a couple of club type songs, flow type songs, serious songs and etc. I actually liked his duo with DRE and think it was a pretty good rhyme although "Things That You Do" f/ Mariah falls flat pretty quickly. I dont know who the heck Amil is but she generally sounds good on the album and I think that having Big Pimpin plus 2 good, hidden tracks is icing on this cake. How could you not buy this album for $10 if you love raps glory days from the late 90s/early00?

2 out of 5 stars Am I Hearing Something Different (2.5 stars).......2006-07-27

I'm reading some of the recent reviews and most of them are 5 star reviews. I wonder if they ever sat down and listened to the album or are they aware if Jay-Z is capable of much more.

Anyway Jay-Z's fourth album Vol.3: Life And Times Of Shawn Carter is a semi-decent album at best. In 1999, Jay-Z was possibly enjoying the mainstream status of his career, to the point that he has been lacking on the microphone. He hasn't improved since Vol.2: Hard Knock Life. His rhymes seemed to be slapped together, as shown in the second track "So Ghetto" with rhymes like "Jigga man, Volume 3/I'm back looking like me/stop the presses/ladies drop your dresses." Some tracks just fall flat on the ground like the Mariah Carey assisted "Things That You Do", and and the weak hook on "S. Carter". Awkward moments are on this album like Dr. Dre appearing on the song "Watch Me" as Jigga doesn't shine lyrically on the track. "Come And Get Me" could have been shortened and condenced to three verses, since I've ever heard Jigga do a solo song lasting longer than 4 and a half minutes. Amil, Beanie Sigel, and Memphis Bleek colab with Jay for "Pop 4 Roc" and that fails causing me to loose my attention towards it.

Now there are some good songs on this album though. The first single "Do It Again (Put Ya Hands Up)" was probably a club banger back in late '99/early 2000 with the help of Beanie Sigel. "It's Hot (Some Like It Hot)" Jay turns to his lyrical side and it works somewhat on the better side on this track with rhymes like "I'm about a dollar, what the f*** is 50 Cents" (a response to 50's "How To Rob"). UGK hooks up with Jay on the hit single "Big Pimpin" that is one of the standout tracks (If you remember when it was on the radio/television, Jay had an extra verse, that is not on the album). Mostly the production on this CD saves it from being a failure. "Snoop Track" featuring Juvenile is one of those tracks that carries a good beat.

The bonus tracks "Jigga My N****" appeared on the Ruff Ryders first comp album and "Girls Best Friend" appeared on the Blue Streak Sndtrk. A couple of bonus songs that are better than the ones on the album.

As I said before Jay-Z is capable of doing much better. Many Jigga fans want to hear the same man that was on Reasonable Doubt, and this album is far from what that is. The production saves this from being a complete failure in my opinion. Luckly Jigga stepped his rhymes back up on future albums. If you want to hear more Jay-Z or you have never bought this album and are curious, I recommend this to you. Otherwise pick up other Jigga albums.

ok i can deal with you saying that this album is average even though i feel it is a very solid album not near the quality of reasonable doubt but it is worth picking up and as far as calling UGK "average texas rappers" thats like calling 2pac an average west coast rapper thats bullsh*t

5 out of 5 stars Nice..........2006-03-04

The boys from Do or Die have done it again, with another solid release, they have yet to put a cd that I didn't like. Anyway this cd contains another on of my favorite Do or Die songs, "One More Way To Die", it's kinda a follow up to "6 Millions Ways to Die". Of course it comes with some song for the ladies like, "Do U?" and "Fantasy", and hard hitters suchs as "Don't Give No F*ck" and "In a Minute". Again this cd is great for any Do or Die fan, as well as any rap fan.

5 out of 5 stars Do or Die.......2004-11-04

I cant believe when i mention to my peers about "Do or Die", and they reply with "Who?". These guys put it down every album with the most famous songs in my opinion: "Fantasy" "Not 4 U" "LiL Ghetto boy" "Choppin Up that paper" "SeX Appeal" "One more way to die" Do U is overate , but good "Nobody Home" "Can you make it hot" "PlaYa like you and me" "Pimpology" "U already Know (only E-40 i can take)" "V.IP " and "Higher". Do or Die should of been the best , ror best known rappers. They need to brodcast their videos more often.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Underrated.......2004-07-11

Pimpin Ain't Dead by Do Or Die is the most underrated album of 2003. These guys definitely put it down. Since the day I purchased it, I cannot stop listening to "Do U?" and "Fantasy". Somebody get these guys a better record deal so they can get a video out. Why doesn't Twista show his family some love? Pimpin Ain't Dead is an album that you can play from beggining to end and not be disappointed.

Yeh this is that palm trees and 80 degree heat music you gonna get that true bottom sound pick this one up for the daddy dollars song and the gip the mutant song he rips it. Grab a six pack of that red budweiser and some black and milds and cruise.

5 out of 5 stars MIami's best period!.......2006-09-26

I never understood why Jt Money never got his props. He flows a lot better than the average rapper of Miami and he has been in the game a lot longer. The way they are sweating these overrated rappers out here while forgetting about Jt Money is a damn crime. Standout Tracks: PLAYA A** S***, ON DA GRIND, HOE PROBLEMS(still makes sense till this day), TOO REAL(that girl Evil is a trip), ALRIGHT(great matchup with Big Gipp), SOMETHING BOUT PIMPIN(classic collabo with Too Short), RAP A** N***A, KITE 2 DA BOYS etc. Filler: Dank is the only song that falls short. Bottom Line: Pimpin On Wax is Jt Money's best work. Jt's style was always on point and the production was not bad. Also recommended by Jt Money is Return Of The B****izer.

Pimpin' on Wax is one of those CD's you can listen to straight through. There are no filler tracks and deffinalty no lame ones. He's been pimpin' it since being in Baby 2 Live Crew and will continue to pimp it. This CD shows some of the versitility of JT Money. Especially on track 14 where he takes his smooth flawless style and puts it on fast foward. All you new school players need to cop this.

4 out of 5 stars Not like the Bay but still a good album.......2006-03-20

I'm not even from the Golden State but I love west coast rap. I have every Short album since Born To Mack. He still sticks to his style and doesn't try to go too commercial that much but this album sounds like its coming straight from Lil Jon. It's a good album but it could be too commercial in my mind. Its defenitly produced and made well which is why its getting 4 out 5 stars. I also understand that it is a mixtape before the album so its not going to be off the charts. There was a good mix of artists on here but it all sounded like I was riding out to a club or somnething. When I want to hear about sluts, or just stupid girls where can I? Im really hoping that his next album will have a mix of style not just clubbing. I cant wait for his new album up all night. Shorty in my mind is still a pimp but should try and show love all across the nation not so much the south.

I've read other reviews from "fake rap fans" claiming that Too $hort has lost it, true he is not as young as he used to be, but he still knows what he is doing, and he's STILL doing it better than any of these new rappers (Fake Pimps) He proves that he's still the best, along with 2 Pac that all these new rappers (Young Jeezy, David Banner,Petey Pablo, etc) and veteran rappers are still using them in their albums, knowing that just their names will sell albums. Honestly, I have'nt listened to the whole album yet, but I have heard some of the songs and they are instant classics. (...) Forty years old and he's still bumping the clubs. Before I even listened to some of the songs, when I heard he was coming out with a mixtape (not album) I knew (as all of you should've) that this was going to be another classic, but just wait until Album number 16 hits stores, as all the others, instant classic. I'm basically tired of defending $hort Dog, but keep hating, he'll just keep Playing!

4 out of 5 stars Don't sleep on this one!.......2003-04-19

In 2001 two Dru Down albums came out. The first one was "Pimp Phernelia". It was not on C-Note Records, the label DD had been on for a long time. It was on another label, since Dru left C-Note, also having a beef with the labels owner Chris Hicks (C&H). The second one was "Gangsta Pimpin'". It was ON C-Note Records and it includes material Dru Down did while he was still there. The truth is that both of the albums were VERY good, I love them both. Dru Down is one of those artists to be blessed both with A LOT OF talent and also a GREAT production team. So untull now he hasn't had a bad album. I think Gangsta Pimpin' is also a great album, a bit better than Pimp Phernelia. It's just more perfected, more polished, better production on it. It's a shame so many people sleep on Dru Down. They say that he fell off after his 1996 classic "Can You Feel Me", but it's not true. Maybe his later 2 albums aren't as PERFECT, but to me, they are not that far behind. Dru Down always tears it up, his flow and raps are always on point. And the producers he works with always come up with some [great] music. Especially on "Gangsta Pimpin'". Nothing special with most of the rappers featured. With the esception of one of the best songs on the album - "Don't Shoot Pimpin'". It features AMG and Suga Free. They fit Dru Down's style so well - they should make a group together, for real!! And the beat on the song is bumpin'! Anway, there is no weak songs on this one, 90% is DA BOMB. You'll love it, if you are a fan of the East Oakland Pimp Playa OG.

5 out of 5 stars The best got better with Dru Down. Pimp of 2001........2001-12-18

The wait was worth a million dollars.Dru Down was the best , but he just got better. This album is Hot! Dru Down has outdone himself this time. He is so talented! I give this album 5 stars , even though it deserves plenty more. As far as west coast pimp rap , this is by far the best I have ever heard. On the real.Keep 'em comin' Pimp-e-doo-Dru.

5 out of 5 stars The pimp is back.......2001-10-04

Finally after 5 years my homie is back to the rap scene.Dru Down is one of my favorite rappers and this album is a good come back for him.The majority of the songs on this album is pimp songs,so it's sort of changing from his original street basically albums that he's put out in the past.Dru still put it down wit all that pimp livin and some additional street songs too and this album got like the funniest skits on there it's crazy.Pimpin Phernelia features his homey Yukmouth,Phats Bossalini and some other rappers that I don't really know, but they can flow thoy. On some tracks Dru disses his old record company C-note records and like always puts a good diss in about that fake pimp too short. The production on this album is the most surprising,he has some new guy called Nemo doing all except one track.Nemo did a good job but original Dru Down fans have to get use to the newer style beats for him,but the new fans will easily like it thoy.So if you ain't got this album get off the computer and go get it and get his other 2 albums too if you ain't got it already.

This CD goes hard. Pimpin and Hustiln has to be one of tha tightest junt's that he made in tha studio. To tell you tha truth I think he should of kept it all Memphis guest on tha CD to make it more of a M town classic. But all together the ish goes hard. And make sure yall check out my Album reppin that 405 "Midwest Invaison" Produced by me MARVELLUSS.
