At a certain point, bad taste and bombast becomes so excessive and so grandiose that they're no longer an easily dismissed irritation but an astonishing monument to the warped imagination. Such a monument is Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell, the long-delayed sequel to 1977's Bat Out of Hell. Once again songwriter/producer Jim Steinman has isolated high-school parking-lot aphorisms and inflated them to Wagner-on-Broadway proportions, casting Mr. Loaf as a heavy-metal Ezio Pinza. Typical of the album's strategy is its big hit single, "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)." Steinman piles on the guitars, drums, synthesizers, and choral voices as if he were Phil Spector producing Kiss playing the Who songbook. The rest of the album tackles the themes of teenage lust, frustration, and rock & roll fantasies in similar fashion. It's somehow beside the point to complain about the puerile lyrics, the leaden rhythms, the derivative melodies, the histrionic vocals, or the overblown arrangements. Steinman knows how to push his audience's buttons, and with Meat Loaf's help, he hits those buttons with a sledgehammer. --Geoffrey Himes

I love this CD. I had the tape and listened to it until it wouldn't play any more. The song content may not be appropriate for kids but the beat and the melody I think out weigh the content if you are an adult.

The music on the CD is defiantly a A Bat Out Of Hell Series Classic but the overall quality of the sound is sad; I felt as if my Bose 501 speakers had a bowl of Rice Krispies inside and as soon as I played the Bat Out Of Hell 3 their was a noticeably pleasant sound coming from the speakers;Quality!each Cd was purchased from Amazon,NEW...

To me the first 6 songs are what make the album.After that the album gets sloppy.But the first 6 songs are an 50 minutes and something of music.And they are great songs.

Moved to review.......2007-06-18

I've recently pulled out my copy of "One Way Ticket to Hell...And Back" to verify a few parts of the title track (which I have been singing (apparently successfully) at karaoke (GASP!)). Though I've always enjoyed this album, I was surprised to find out how much better the album is than I remembered. "Dinner Lady Arms", with its "sensitive" verses full of chiming guitars and '80s-on-the-Sunset-Strip chords (not to mention its Boston-styled acoustic-guitar-chugging-next-to-stacks-of-Marshalls and über-harmonies) should be a summer single, and has been treated as such in my car stereo. "Knockers" is a fun number (that does *not* refer to, um, blinkers) that seems to best recall the first album. "Is It Just Me?" and the title track are fist-raising numbers that must absolutely kick solid a** live (because they do a fine job of it on album), and "English Country Garden" is just manic. Anyone wanting catchy choruses, walls of guitars and well-prepared basslines (not to mention excellently-recorded drums) come right here.

But what REALLY prompted me to write a review were other reviewers' comments that The Darkness does not surpass their influences. I want to put a stop to this before another GREAT band is basically ruined in an attempt to become truly "original". Safely put, "original" flew out the window when everybody and their dog saw their back catalogue released on CD. Lindsey Buckingham was taking inspiration from the Everly Brothers on the verses to "Go Your Own Way", Boston's Tom Scholz has admitted to being inspired by the James Gang's "Tend My Garden" for his classic "More Than a Feeling", Marvin Gaye's smash single "What's Goin' On" was stalled by the brass at Motown because they thought it was too "old hat" for their scene ("Nobody does scat anymore!"), and no one will ever convince me that '80s hair metal bands such as Poison and Motley Crüe didn't take a page from '70s glam (and not only in fashion). The reason why these bands/artists were considered original (as compared to maybe the Darkness) is that their influences were kept relatively obscure (I mean, come on, how many youth today know of "Tend My Garden"?). Today's discerning listener knows of Slade, Boston and Queen beforehand (not to mention many a band who've unsuccessfully tried to match this powerful trio). But please LAY OFF The Darkness for being "unoriginal"! I will fully proclaim my Revisionist's Cry of "Recognize the good, eschew the bad, and make it better this time around!" And that is a challenge to which I feel The Darkness answer in spades. And to add to that the fact that they are often tongue-in-cheek, it makes their harmonized operatic falsetto vocal parts and bent-note guitarmonies (check out that "WHOOMWHOOMwhoomwhoom" effect little over a quarter into the solo of "Dinner Lady Arms" after the orgasmic squeal of three guitars in one... sheer genius, whoever recognized that one) even MORE appealing. This is an album that took time and effort to create, and just like the first Boston album, all that sweat paid off. The reason why I am not giving it five stars is because half the album has yet to plant itself into my memory (I'm too busy listening to the other half), but this is already two to four great songs more than a lot of '80s hair band albums... and would you give Boston's "Don't Look Back" anything less than four stars, even if Side 2 is undercooked? Didn't think so. RAWK ON!

A Throwback to Rock Glory.......2007-05-14

With the driving guitar riffs and screeching vocals, The Darkness represents a throwback to the glory days of bands such as AC-DC and Van Halen. This is excellent music to drive fast to, or to work out to. I discovered after being pulled in by their one big recent hit "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" from their album "Permission to Land". After hearing the tracks on this album, I realized I had stumbled on a hidden gem of a band.

They should have broken up after Permission to Land.......2007-04-25

I read somewhere that The Darkness almost broke up after the success of their first CD. They should have if this is their idea of a follow-up. Where did the fun and great riffs of Permission to Land go? These songs are awful. They wander round and round and never go anywhere. Instead of the silly lyrics of the first CD, sometimes here they try to sound serious and end up sounding ridiculous. The music is trying hard to be Queen but that's a unique style and hard to pull off. The Darkness come away sounding as if they have no idea how to write a song. They should have stuck to the straight ahead approach they employed for Permission to Land. This was one of the worst music purchases I ever made.

A vast improvement over Permission to Land.......2007-02-20

I was skeptical about this CD at first as I had listened to The Darkness' first album, Permission to Land, and didn't care for it at all. With this album, however, The Darkness has grown on me and I highly recommend it -- especially to fans of Queen. At times I get the feeling they're actually channeling Queen through their harmonies, Dan Hawkins' guitar, and Justin Hawkins' falsetto. You'll either love the falsetto or hate it, but you'll have to admit the guy's got talent! My favorite track is 'Hazel Eyes,' which has a sort of Celtic-gone-wild feel to it.

Great Sohpmore Effort.......2007-01-10

I love this album, but don't really know why. The Darkness once again takes their Sweet meets Queen sound and comes up with an album of songs that simply will not leave your head. The Queen comparisons are even stronger on this disc as long time Queen Producer Roy Thomas Baker does the production chores on the album. Instrumentally these guys are nothing spectacular, but put all of the parts in the right places in order to come up with a winning formula. The band never takes itself too seriously and some of the songs, such as "Knockers" and "Bald" are hilarious. The title track rocks with a song about cocaine (band leader Justin Hawkins recently entered rehab for his problem with it. "English Country Garden", "Hazel Eyes", "Blind Man" "Is It Just Me", "Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time" are all solid rock songs. Justin Hawkins uses his upper register falsetto more on this album than on the first, and your mileage will vary as to whether you find it annoying or enduring. Overall I really enjoy this disc, and it is a great one to crank up in your car.

Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month!That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included,especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though,there is a complain:i can't understand,why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song,the cues from the Bacchaen festival,music from Deja Vou All Over Again,where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest!That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style,should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes.It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song,will agree with me!Mmmm!

A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

Having been fortunate to have seen the English National Opera's production in 1988 of "Orpheus" with Wilson and Pountney's outrageously naughty English text, this highlight CD serves as an audio souvenir. Too bad the ENO didn't have the foresight to film the production-would have made a great DVD. The CD booklet does have a few photos of the sets designed by Gerald Scarfe (who also designed Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album artwork) so you get a taste, combined with the CD selections, of what the production was like.

Offenbach is great anyhow, but this recording is riotous. The translation into English is first-rate, really funny stuff, and the singing is pretty good, too. Very worthwhile.

The rewritten lyrics, in English, are some of the wittiest and wicked in operetta. Wilson and Pountney have recaptured the spirit of naughtiness, not a small accomplishment in our licentious times. Though delighted to have the highlights, I wished a CD set or video of the full production were available.

At a certain point, bad taste and bombast become so excessive and so grandiose that they're no longer an easily dismissed irritation but an astonishing monument to warped imagination. Such a monument is Meat Loaf's Bat out of Hell II: Back into Hell, the long-delayed sequel to 1977's Bat out of Hell. Once again songwriter-producer Jim Steinman has isolated high-school parking-lot aphorisms and inflated them to Wagner-on-Broadway proportions, casting Mr. Loaf as a heavy-metal Ezio Pinza. Typical of the album's strategy is its big hit single, "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)." Steinman piles on the guitars, drums, synthesizers, and choral voices as if he were Phil Spector producing Kiss playing the Who songbook. The rest of the album tackles the themes of teenage lust, frustration, and rock & roll fantasies in similar fashion. It's somehow beside the point to complain about the puerile lyrics, the leaden rhythms, the derivative melodies, the histrionic vocals, or the overblown arrangements. Worth getting just for the remastered sound........2007-05-15

While I realize that the 1st Bat out of Hell album is regarded more highly than the 2nd album, Bat out of Hell 2: Back into Hell will always be my personal favorite of the 2 as well as my favorite Meat Loaf album of all time.

Origianlly released in 1993, this release put Meat Loaf back on top of the music world after a massive slump (especially here in the states) during the 80's in which most people had forgotten about him and written him off as a has been or a one album wonder.

Composer Jim Steinman (who also arranged everything) took over production duties on this album and it is just pure unadulterated Steinman. This is what Steinman's 1980 solo album Bad to be Good (which was supposed to be the true followup to Bat out of Hell) might have been like in terms of quality if Meat Loaf hadn't gotten strung out on drugs and lost his singing voice for a short time.

I can't really say much more positive about this album that people haven't already done on the multitude of reviews for the regular CD. Truly great music and it never fails to get me in a good mood when listening to it as well, which I can't say that about a lot of music. While the songs are very long at times, they never outstay their welcome.

Anyway, the main purpose of my review is to review the 2002 reissue (or deluxe edition) of the 1993 album.

While I had had the original 1993 CD since it came out, I was always a bit let down by the mastering job on the CD. The overall volume could have been done a bit higher and the album just lacked a certain punch in terms of the overall audio at times. This is especially surprising since by 1993 pretty much CD had completely taken over by that point and people had figured out how to properly master stuff for CD audio as well. The CD didn't sound bad per se, but it could've been done better at the same time.

This 2002 deluxe edition fixes all of the mastering issues I had by doing a 24 bit digital remastering of the album. All I can say is that my jaw was on the floor as to how much better the album sounds now. In fact, it finally sounds perfect!

the overall volume level now maxes out without having any digital clipping issues and the overall sound just sounds more vibrant with more clarity between all of the instruments/vocal parts. There is more punch to the low end as well without the mix being altered. Basically, this album now sounds absolutely perfect and this is the way the CD should have been mastered in the first place.

The 2nd CD is pretty much pointless and redundant as it just feautres edited single versions of album tracks along with some remixes. No live cuts are present which should have been included as well. I guess this is cool from a historical/completist viewpoint, but no one will ever listen to Disc 2 for the most part.

But I bought this mainly due to the remastered sound and in that respect I wasn't disappoitned. If you are an audiophile and like to have the absolute best sounding version of your favorite albums (or classic releases like this), then you owe it to yourself to upgrade to this deluxe edition if you are as big of a fan of Bat out of Hell 2 as I am.

I had owned the 1993 Bat out of Hell 2 album for many years, since high school, and to this this day I can never get tired of any of the songs! Jim Steinman is a genius when it comes to grand rock bombast, and in this remastered release, the sound quality is better than ever. As far as the 2nd CD goes, I like the first couple of edited songs, especially the Radio Edited "I'd Do Anything for Love," since that was the one that hooked me to Meatloaf in the first place. Still, I'll always enjoy listening to the full 12-minute version more.

There is nothing else in popular music that comes close to equalling this masterpiece!!!! If nothing else, BAT OUT OF HELL II: BACK INTO HELL is worth buying for the first two tracks, "I'd Do Anything Fo Love (But I Won't Do That)" and "Life Is A Lemon And I Want My Money Back" and for "Objects In The Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are". Everything about the songs is overblown but that's the point about it; the first BAT OUT OF HELL notwithstanding, there has never been anything like this in popular music before or since!!!! The songs and the sound quality are excellent, and despite being 10-12 minutes in length, "I'd Do Anything For Love..." and "Objects In The Rear View Mirror..." are worth listening to all the way through!!!! The Deluxe Edition remasters the original album while adding a bonus disc with multiple single edits and remixes of four tracks ("I'd Do Anything...", "Life Is A Lemon...", "Objects In The Rear View..." and "Rock And Roll Dreams Come Through"). Go back into hell with BAT OUT OF HELL II!!!!!

This album is one I've enjoyed for years. The soaring vocals, the different depths of music, its really an enjoyable experience. The songs stay with you long after you stop listening. There's a lot more going on musically in this one cd than any of the new artists that are out there. A must for everyone.

This isn't your Nashville garden variety sugary what a prefect life I have music. If you want music about that look elsewhere. If you want the raw, the real the honest, the soul filled music get a copy of this cd. Billy Don Burns is amazing. His skillful songwriting and vocals is second to none.

The majority of the songs are stripped down . It sounds like it was done live in the studio without those nasty overdubs that robs the music of it's soul.
The only song that get tuned up at the end of "Runnin Drugs out of Mexico" but the song calls for it
He pays tribute to his heroes
Pasty Cline, Haggard, Keith Whitley, Johnny Cash and Hank Sr.

Pasty a duet with Willie Nelson who also plays guitar as well. Which is obvious to the listner

His cover of the Cash classic "Give My Love To Rose" is filled with emotion. His 1997 cd knocked Cash (his hero) out the number one spot on the Amreicana charts.

I've been on the net for almost 10 years I've found alot of indy artists but Billy Don is hands down the best I've ever heard.

Meanest bad-ass of the Outlaws.......2005-08-10

Woa! This guy's one piece of work. Billy's had a long history of friendships with Nashville, and Texas' baddest hombres (Kristofferson, Haggard, Paycheck, Cash, Jones, etc), but his music was never released until a few of years ago. I'm mighty grateful I've discovered this guy. This is what real outlaw country music stands for. This guy is so brutally honest that there's no chance you'll hear this on mainstream anything. He duets with Tanya Tucker, and Willie Nelson on this, his fourth release (only two are available), but he's twice as gritty as anyone out there today. There's no comparisons. He sings of addiction, drug smuggling, love gone wrong, and Patsy Cline; what more can you ask for? He also produced an album by Paycheck that was recorded when Johnny was in the "Pen" some years ago, but that's never seen the light of day.......yet. That story is pretty amazing.
