With Moving Pictures, Rush's complex songwriting and musical virtuosity reached new heights. It's that rarest of creatures, a highly listenable progressive-rock album; even the all-instrumental "YYZ" is of interest to listeners besides musicians. The highlight of the album is "Limelight"; like many progressive-rock bands, Rush writes songs about the experience of being on-stage. The result is impressive, with almost orchestral arrangements that never overwhelm the actual music. "Tom Sawyer," another classic, is on this album, as well as the science-fiction-meets-road-movie "Red Barchetta," the epic "The Camera Eye," the cautionary "Witch Hunt," and "Vital Signs," which takes advantage of the budding digital sound technology available at the time the album was recorded. IN TERMS OF RUSH ALBUMS THIS IS THEM AT THEIR PRIME. A NON STOP ROCKER!!
I FIND MYSELF WISHING THEY HAD PUT 10 SONGS ON HERE INSTEAD OF 7. BECAUSE IT'S OVER AND YOU STILL WANT MORE. EVERY CUT GIVES 100% OF THE RUSH EXPERIANCE. THEIR NEXT BEST ALBUM IS "2112". BUT THIS ONE IS HEAD OF THE CLASS.

What a rush.......2007-07-24

I vacillated on this one, between 4 and 5 stars. I went with 4 because the album just kind of falters some in the second half. The first half is spectacular: Tom Sawyer, Limelight and Red Barchetta are all awesome. The Carmera Eye is good but too long. The final tracks on teh CD are solid, but not up to the mark of the others. Overall, the CD has a lot of punch for an album with compartively few tracks [tho it does log in at 40 minutes as a whole]. Strong 4 stars, almost got to 5.

The Greatest Rush Ever Made!!!!.......2007-06-13

Moving Pictures is both one of my favorite albums of all time and one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Perfect in every aspect. This is Rush unleashed! After the near perfection of previous efforts like Hemispheres and Farewell To Kings and Permanent Waves, Rush came together and created their masterpiece. I could listen to it a million times and still never get tired of the prog-rock trio's best effort.

Tom Sawyer - Hands down one of the coolest songs ever! Here the boys from Toronto show that not only are they excellent musicians, but they can write a song with hooks from hell. Memorable and classic. I love this tune.

Red Barchetta - My Uncle has a country place that no one knows about... Another classic Rush tune. Written in the 1984-esque future-gone-wrong perspective with an idea garnered from a cool sci-fi story. This about a boy and his car and the fact that driving has become illegal. Great stuff.

YYZ - One of the most killer instrumental tunes ever recorded. This song rox! Geddy, Alex & Neil in complete show-off jam mode. Solid.

Limelight - Another of my personal favorites. A song about the other side of fame & fortune. From the opening riff, this song rocks! All the world's indeed a stage and we are merely players! Excellent!

The Camera Eye - If Moving Pictures is said to have a soft spot, Camera Eye would be it, although I happen to love this song. Clocking just over eleven minutes, this is a sprawling, moody tune along the lines of Xanadu or Natural Science. A sleeper, but still strong.

Witch Hunt - I have so many favorites on this album, and Witch Hunt is another. Written about prejudice and mob mentality, Witch Hunt is part three of the 'Fear Trilogy' (The Enemy Within & The Weapon being the other two parts) that they performed live for a long time. Killer tune. Those who know what's best for us should rise and save us from ourselves....

Vital Signs - Great ending song to a magnificent album. Short and sweet and too the point. Neil's lyrics flow on their own. Everybody's got to deviate from the norm.

Overall, Rush went into the studio and came up big with Moving Pictures. This is the culmination of their earlier years solidified into something both powerful and perfect. There will never be another Rush album like Moving Pictures. This is the peak. Great songs will follow but there will never be that cohession that this album brings. Great album to start with if you are just getting acquainted with Rush. An old favorite for those of us who have been following them forever.

rush moving forward.......2007-05-29

While Rush has so many great albums this one is in my top three.
A classic cd from the 80's with such melodic songs as Red Barchetta and
Witch Hunt. Plus the two mega hits we all love. If you are wanting to forget your worries, put this in your cd player and sit back.

Best album ever.......2007-05-11

OK folks, I don't want to sound over the top here but only one album can be the "best ever" and this is it for me. Every track is outstanding.

This came out in my freshman year of HS but since I had no older siblings it generally passed me by until Signals came out. I picked it up, went to the New World Man tour where they played every song from 'Moving Pictures' except for 'Witch Hunt' and hence... I found my favorite band. As soon as I had the money I went to the store and bought up every Rush album including 'Moving Pictures'.

At that time a new technology was being developed -- the Compact Disc. 'Moving Pictures' was one of a handful of albums chosen for this new experimental technology and they could not have chosen a better set of songs for this experiment. If I remember correctly the CD cost about $20 which was about 3 times the cost of vinyl. It was well worth the cost.

Everybody knows about Tom Sawyer and Limelight -- played on classic rock stations to this day. They have played these two songs on every concert as well and after 25 years I have almost had enough. Notice I say 'almost'.

Unfortunately, along with YYZ, side B gets overlooked. I listen to side B more often than side A because they are never played on the radio and the quality is just as good. I remember being completely fascinated at how an 11 minute song (Camera eye) can have such little singing and come out so fantastic. The traveling Lifeson arpeggios are simple yet clever and sound so outstanding with the other instruments as you travel from NY to London in a variety of time signatures that change like a well oiled Mercedes.

Witch hunt makes you feel like you are in a Salem witch trial with the mob stirring in the background. The synth in this song is some of their best use of keyboards ever.

Vital Signs sounds a little different than the rest of the album but it is a perfect ending to a perfect record. "Unstable condition. A symptom of Life." The end of the song is so strong it makes you want to hit the repeat button and start it all over again with Tom Sawyer.

A regular fixture on the pop charts throughout the '70s, the Moody Blues roared into the '80s with this tremendously successful record. In fact, the album sounds only slightly different than its predecessors; the synthesizer textures are heavier (thanks to former Yes keyboardist Patrick Moraz), but the band's flair for catchy, melodic compositions is still very much in evidence. In retrospect, songs like "The Voice," "Talking Out of Turn" and "In My World," while solid, don't exactly measure up to such all-time Moodies classics like "Ride My See-Saw" or "Tuesday Afternoon." Still, this is probably the last truly consistent album the band ever made. --Dan Epstein

My intro to the Magical Moodies.......2007-06-07

This really isn't a review, just me wanting to briefly share my sentimental feelings about the Moodies and this particular album.

Having been born in 1964 into a household that did not allow rock music, I didn't discover The Moody Blues until the Summer of 1981. I can remember so very clearly lying on the floor on a hot day and hearing 'Gemini Dream' on the radio. I was instantly in love with the sounds of the music, lyrics, and what I was to later learn, John Lodge's unique voice. I was ecstatic when a few months later I got another delicious taste of the Moodies with 'The Voice'. I have been smitten by them ever since. Before LDV, I had never even heard of the Moodies and had certainly never heard anything sounding remotely like them. Since that time I have discovered the earlier works of this great band. They never cease to amaze, enthrall and delight me. Every time I listen to a Moodies song, they take up a little bit more space in my heart, where this album holds a very, very special place.

Now that I know them, I cannot imagine a world without the beautiful music and words of these talented and wonderful men who call themselves The Moody Blues.

Cover art trivia.......2007-03-30

Something I noticed years ago was the satellite passing through the sky on the album cover, an interesting anachronism made all the more poignant in its subtlety. Also, it's not just any satellite, but a "Voyager" that was launched in the 70s and is currently speeding out of our solar system. Indeed, a "Long Distance Voyager." It's a nice reminder of the Moodies cosmic roots and harkens back to "To Our Children's Children's Children."

The Moody Blues' tenth studio album entitled Long Distance Voyager was released in May of 1981.
The Moody Blues, by 1981, had not put out any studio work since 1978's Platinum selling Octave (which was the last album with founding keyboard player Mike Pinder). Then in the spring of 1981 saw the return of The Moody Blues, which now consisted of guitarist/singer/songwriter Justin Hayward, bass player/singer/songwriter John Lodge (bass, vocals), flute player/singer/songwriter Ray Thomas, drummer Graeme Edge and one time Yes keyboard player Patrick Moraz (whom Yes fans remember for his stellar work on their 1974 album Relayer). Many people were disappointed with Octave and called it disjointed but Long Distance Voyager saw The Moody Blues return in a MAJOR WAY!
First, the band jettisoned producer Tony Clarke and replaced him with Pip Williams. Then the band recorded in England for the first time since 1972's Seventh Sojourn at Threshold Studios in Northamptonshire, England in late 1980/early 1981. Finally, the mellotrons were gone and synthesizers were now here in its place.
The album opend with the Top 20 hit "The Voice" which its synthesizer intro showcaed Moraz' synthesizer work. The track, penned by Hayward, is a great song and worthy of hit status. Next is "Talking Out of Turn", a ballad penned and sung by Lodge. A great song. Next was the album's other big hit, the Top 20 charting "Gemini Dream", which was penned and sung by by Lodge and Hayward and proclaiming they were back, and they were. In My World is next and was the last song on the first side. The Hayward penned number is almost country-ish in sound but a beautiful track and featured excellent steel guitar work by B.J. Cole.
"Meanwhile" starts the second half of the album and was penned and sung by Hayward and is a fantastic number about love slipping through the character's fingers. Next is the Graeme Edge penned number "22,000 Days" which is about life and making the most of it and a stellar track. we follow with another Lodge penned number called "Nervous" and is another classic number. The album's last 3 tracks is a mini-suite penned and sung by Ray Thomas. The three tracks in question are "Painted Smile", "Reflective Smile" and "Veteran Cosmic Rocker" compares the music and entertainment world to the circus. This mini-suite of three songs is a great way to close a classic album.
Long Distance Voyager upon its release became The Moody Blues' second, and to date, last US chart-topper hitting #1 in July of 1981 and staying there for three weeks and was the second Moody Blues album to hit the Platinum mark in the US (meaning it sold a million or more in copies) and rightfully so because the album is flawless and saw The Moody Blues come back from a clunker to bring one of the best albums of their career.

Forget the plodding, Octave. THIS is the Mooody Blues comeback album.

Most of the songs here are fantastic. The band is re-energized by the arrival of Patrick Moraz. "Talking Out Of Turn." is the best John Lodge solo vocal on any Moody Blues album from any era. "In My World" is a worthy addition to the Justin Hayward ballad catalogue. The only criticism is the Ray Thomas songs are not on par with his classic work, and, consequently, are the weakest songs on the album.

The Moody Blues' best album of the 80's.......2006-11-10

THE DISC: (1981) 10 tracks clocking in approximately 47 minutes. Included with the disc is a 14-page booklet containing song titles/time/credits, song lyrics, and misc info. Recorded at Threshold Studios in Northamptonshire, England. A hard-to-find gold/remastered edition released in 1997. Label - Decca Records / Threshold.

COMMENTS: I was too young to be 'into' the Moody Blues when they were big for the 1st time (late 1960's into the early 70's). "Long Distance Voyager" (LDV) was my first album of theirs... it hooked me in and eventually made me go backwards to buy much of their earlier material. Where it's debatable what album might be the best of the 60's and again in the 70's, I feel "LDV" is clearly their best album of the 80's. The thrust of their musical direction had changed since their first 7-8 albums. Leaning now toward main stream rock/pop, with less orchestration and space rock feel. "LDV" became the band's 2nd #1 album on the Billboard chart (with 2 huge hits - #15 "The Voice" and #12 "Gemini Dream"). This album also saw the departure of long time keyboardist Mike Pinder, and the entrance of ex-Yes keyboardist Patrick Moraz. "The Voice" is a great song and worthy of hit status. I was never a huge fan of the very pop-oriented "Gemini Dream"... to me, outside of the vocals, it really doesn't even sound like the band. The gems on the album though are the non-hits. "Meanwhile" is a great melody about love slipping through the character's fingers; "22,000 Days" (my all-time favorite Graeme Edge song) is a great song about life and making the most of it; and the last 3 tracks pertaining to the entertainers of the world... "Painted Smile" through "Veteran Cosmic Rocker". The album really closes with a bang. If you want to own any of the Moody Blues' many studio albums, "Long Distance Voyager" should be one of them (5 stars).

Popular culture no longer applies to me.......2007-04-23

There's just something so endearing about a band who announces on their first song: "Formed a band/we formed a band/look at us! We formed a band!" with a mixture of glee and winking confidence.

And it's just the warmup for this enthusiastic, energetic rock band, with their solid, peppy Britpop debut, "Bang Bang Rock & Roll." Their rollicking guitars are so infused with fun and over-the-top rock'n'roll sentiments that it's impossible not to be charmed.

A sizzling riff opens the first song, in which Eddie Argos announces that they've formed a band, and urges people to"Stop buying your albums from the supermarket/they only sell records that have charted." Then he adds with winking charm: "And yes, this is my singing voice. It's not irony, it's not rock & roll -- we're just talking.... to the KIDS!"

Turns out it's only the warmup -- next Art Brut focuses on the jangly, tight rhythms of how "My little brother just discovered rock & roll/There's a noise in his head, and he's out of control!"

From there, they trip off into a joyous round of tight Britpop odes to Emily Kane, bouncy little indiepop, and frolicking rock numbers that twist in on themselves during the catchy chorus. But they also try out some other sounds: the sunny Beach-Boysy pop of "Move to L.A.," and the weirdly ominous ballad "Rusted Guns."

At first, Art Brut sound like any other fun Britpop band. But their album blossoms the more you listen to it -- these lads have a tight grip on their brilliant instrumentation, and they know how to wink at us through their odd, somewhat repetitive lyrics.

The riffs in this album are simply stunning: they ring, buzz, bounce, and sizzle, tightly wound into solid tunes. They're paired with solid basslines and some smashing drums, along with some twisted keyboard and what sounds like stomping feet. Together, they form some deliciously dancy rock tunes, but they're complex enough to never get dull

At first, their lyrics sound kind of simplistic, and in a few songs they are. But listen carefully. They're a lot wittier than that: they take a few humorous jabs at L.A., the music industry, and derivative bands. And they know how to create beautifully over-the-top odes to a first love ("Every girl that I've seen since/looks just like you when I squint"), and the joy of rock'n'roll. Even a song about.... um, performance problems.

In fact, in some songs, they exude the delight of some teenage boys who are getting to have fun out on the town... with girls! In one song, Argos yells out joyously about a new girlfriend, "I've seen her naked.... twice!" Very cute.

Argos himself has a nice voice -- it's pleasantly ordinary, neither too smooth or too rough, and he can sing through quieter songs as well as the rollicking dancier ones. And occasionally he drops out of singing altogether, usually to deliver the best lines: "No more songs about sex and drugs and rock and roll / It's BOOOOORING!"

Art Brut's debut album is a fun, rollicking, laddish album of solid rock'n'roll tunes, delightful lyrics and solid singing. Definite;y a must-buy.

Creative, original, annoying........2007-02-06

Ok, so it doesn't sound EXACTLY like everything out there. And the lyrics are witty, I'll admit. But I find this album so annoying that I skip EACH TRACK hoping to find the next one more interesting. No luck. This band REALLY LIKES TO REPEAT PHRASES OF MINIMAL INTEREST. I don't ever want to listen to my Art Brut album. It may be better than 99% of what's heard on major channels (both radio and video), but it is still basically unlistenable. Enjoy.

Good times, but not like the old times.......2007-01-19

My cat loves this record. He says it's cool and fun and "Emily Kane" kicks some serious butt. He says for you to give it a try, and then give it a second and third listen, and when you're hooked you should send him some nice cat treats as thanks for hooking you up with Art Brut.

great album.......2006-09-25

I heard this band last year and have loved them since I heard "Formed A Band." I have seen them play several times. It was one of the most exciting shows I have witnessed. I even saw them when they were on Jimmy Kimmel. This band, along with The Cribs, are among my favorite new UK bands. This record has been out a while in the UK, and is only coming out now in America in July 2006. All the songs are clever stories. "My Little Brother" is about a young person's discovery of music. "Emily Kane" is about lost love. "Rusted Guns Of Milan" is about bad sex. "Modern Art" reminds me of Bongwater. "Good Weekend" is a song about new love. "Bang Bang Rock & Roll" is a song against all these bands trying to be the Velvet Underground. "Moving To LA" is a funny song about dreaming of better places. I was there when Art Brut first played this song in Los Angeles. It was hilarious. All these songs have evolved overtime too. "Bad Weekend" has the great line "Popular culture no longer applies to me." The song "18,000 Lire" is a song about a robbery. This album is more like a set of short stories than a record. The American version of this great album has three more songs. They are a little like Pulp and a little like Bongwater. This is a great album. It has lost none of its power.

The music that feeds my pleasure!.......2006-08-27

This CD was an immediate hit with me. What's great about this is the sound, the overall product. The speak-singing vocals brings out the english accent and is a pleasure to listen to. "My Little Brother" and "Rusted Guns of Milan" are a few favorites, "Moving To L.A." is the hit of the collection. To describe Art Brut music I would have to say Indie Avant-Garde. In my opinion it's well worth the money and one of the better CD's of 2006.

I remember one night, I was visiting my mother's house for a vacation back in 1995. I didn't have a lot of cable channels at my house, so I was surprised that while channel surfing on of all places, a concert was broadcast on the Disney Channel. It was a live concert of Billy Joel being broadcast. Turns out that back in the day, Disney didn't have commercials and at night aired entertainment geared to adults.

I checked the guide to see what was coming up, and there was a concert by someone I'd not really listened to before, Peter Gabriel. (I didn't follow Geneses, only knew Phil Collins had replaced someone)

Well, this concert blew me away. The rich tones, the "World Beat" of the music, and a great gravely voice with some staging worthing of a Broadway production. I could not believe my good fortune that I'd stumbled across someone new. Well, part way through the show I heard Solsbury Hill, which sounded familiar but this rendition was really fascinating. When the concert closed with In Your Eyes, I almost wanted to get up and cheer.

I spoke with a friend of mine about this show, and told him it was some guy named Peter Gabriel, and his band and female singer put on one of the best shows I'd ever seen. I told him it was going to be on again, and if I could figure out how to get my mother's old "Beta Max" recorder to work and if I could find a tape for it, I'd record it for him.

He looked at me with a blank stare, and said, "Your kidding me, right? You don't know Peter Gabriel? The name doesn't ring a bell to you?" No I responded. He looked at me and said "He's the former lead singer of Geneses." I told him I didn't really follow them. He said "Don't you recall a few months back I asked you if you wanted to grab a date and go to a concert with me and my girlfriend?" I shrugged and told him I had a vague recollection. He said "do you remember the name of the guy?" Not really I said. "Peter Gabriel, you idiot. I told you you would really like him but because you didn't know his music you passed. And afterwards how me and my girlfriend were raving about the show." Boy did I feel stupid.

Well the show was aired on Disney a couple of more times while I was visiting, but I never was able to get the Beta Max working. I did buy the CD and listened to it probably two or three times a day while driving.

I now regret not listening to my friend and now accept almost every offer to go see someone new afraid I'll miss a show as great as this one. (In twelve years, I've only found 2 other shows I've been more impressed with).

I'm sorry to hear that the DVD isn't the exact same show on the CD or the one Disney aired. But that shouldn't stop you from buying the DVD or this great CD.

Secret World Live.......2007-06-09

Peter Gabriel is the best! I have not heard all of his work, but I always find something new to appreciate every time I hear one of his songs. Like being at a live concert. His lyrics are so visual.

Some good tracks, but does not translate well to CD.......2007-05-16

Released in 1994, this comes from a concert in Italy from the tour to support Gabriel's Us CD. It is 99 minutes long.

The sound quality on this CD is mediocre. The dynamic range is a little muted. The low end is flat. And there is a fuzziness to the sound. To really enjoy the sublties of the music, the sound quality really needed to be better.

The worst part about the sound is that the audience is mixed in way too loud. Many intricate moments are overwhelmed by crowd noise. There is no reason for this. To get the crowd this loud, it is necessary to have microphones pointed at the audience, and then purposely mix it loud.

For the most part, Peter Gabriel's live music has not translated well to CD. This was true when Gabriel was part of Genesis and it is true in his solo career. Although it wasn't a better band, the Phil Collins led Genesis sounded much better on live records. His only really good live album has been Plays Live.

With Peter Gabriel, "you really had to be there". There is a DVD of this concert, but unfortunately, it also has problems. The sound quality isn't any better than this CD. The filming of the concert was not that great. But, the translation to DVD was horrible (the orginal VHS version is better). The was a video/sync problem with the DVD leading to rumors that Gabriel lip synced this concert.

This is mostly a new, international band for Gabriel. Only the great Tony Levin on bass remains from the earlier touring bands. The group adds some interesting interpretations to the music.

In spite of the problems I mention with this album, there are still some fantastic tracks like, In Your Eyes (the best version I have heard...I have heard many), Kiss that Frog and Shaking the Tree.

I found that some of the hits, such as Sledgehammer and Solsbury Hill are just boring and tedious on this CD. Again this is probably the case where the songs were much more enjoyable in the live environment where you can see the stage show.

There are some great moments on this CD and it is probably worth buying if you a Gabriel fan. It just isn't perfect throughout as you would expect from Gabriel. A good quality DVD would be a better choice if it were available. You may want to go for the DVD anyway.

A perfect score ... again.......2007-03-18

Very good double live cd from Peter Gabriel...what a concert it was !
The sound is just perfect again, the choice of songs is almost perfect.
Just one exception....San Jacinto is not included on the cd but you can see and hear it on the DVD, a bit strange to have excluded this jewel from the cd. If you have notice, you have Red Rain on the cd and not on the DVD. Anyway, this is one of the best live performance you can have.

Live music is better for me.......2007-02-10

Some groups strain so hard to come up with something creative and complicated when they are in a recording studio that new songs often sound more cluttered to me than a performance live before an enthusiastic audience, which helps listeners identify the high points. I often thought that musicians like to play the same song longer than new music is expected to be when new tunes are packaged in an album. I have a learning curve that requires a certain amount of time before I can get into new music so that I hear it as a presence that it echoes with anticipation in my mind. A set that comes with two discs is perfect for me if it comes with a few long songs on disc 2.
Great on all of the reasons mentioned, disc 2 of `Secret World Live' provides the songs `Digging In The Dirt,' `Sledgehammer,' `Secret World,' `Don't Give Up,' and `In Your Eyes.' I'm glad I had the opportunity to become familiar with MTV videos of `Sledgehammer' and `Digging In The Dirt' back when a rotation of familiar music videos was one of the best things I ever watched TV for. Now listening to this brings back a lot of the pleasure. Disc 1 has concert versions of the new songs I wanted to get anyway eventually, so getting this all together made a tremendous amount of sense to me, and it still does.

Cornucopia of Pavarotti's works.......2007-03-01

This is a "Super hits" CD, with over forty different cuts (quite a few of which have appeared elsewhere, of course). For those who are aficionados of Pavarotti, this is what might be called "hog heaven."

Disc 1 features estimable works such as "Nessun dorma" (well done, with his voice showing to good effect), "Che gelida manina" (excellently done, with good characterization), ""Celeste Aida" (elegantly sung), "Di quella pira" (a much better than average version), "E lucevan le stelle" (Pavarotti does a nice job in the Puccini-Verdi repertoire), "La donna e mobile" (sung with aplomb), "Recondita armonia" (the other aria from Tosca, which also shows Pavarotti's voice off to good effect), and so on.

Disc 2 is especially interesting, because it features a more popular set of works, from the redoubtable "O sole mio" (richly orchestrated and nicely sung, not overpowered by Pavarotti's operatic voice), "Core n'grato" (compare with Caruso's version), "Oh, holy night," "La danza" (spritely sung with excellent breath control in a treacherous song), "Santa Lucia" (again, smoothly sung), "Ave Maria" (seemingly sung with respect and affection).

A cornucopia of Pavarottiana. For those fans of Pavarotti, this "greatest hits" collection will be welcome. For those who may not be aware of this tenor when his voice was still fresh, this is a fine entrée to his work.

Don't...!!!.......2005-01-24

To combine a voice as beautiful as Pavarotti's with some of the world's greatest music and outstanding orchestras, and end up with this...`thing'...is unforgivable. After buying and listening to it, it brought to mind those painful words "A fool, a fool. I saw a fool today. I saw him in the mirror."

Great Tenor - Poor CD Quality.......2004-10-11

I have never been a huge fan of Maestro Pavarotti but I must admit that this compilation is a masterful collection of his operatic highlights.

I particularily enjoy the first disc which contains just about all the major tenor arias. The singing is superb and listening to this CD it becomes obvious what the fuss over the pre-3 Tenors Pavarotti was all about - the man really did have one of the greatest tenor voices of all time.
His diction was flawless, his line perfect and his interpretation in keeping with the greatest of the Italian tenors of days gone by.

The second disc is interesting in that it is a bit uneven. It contains a few neapolitan standards, a x-mas song, a duet with Frank Sinatra and some other random selections.

Overall this is a 5 star CD but due to the extremely low volume, particularily on the first and most important disc I can only give it a 4 star rating.

On a final note, anyone puzzeled by the current hype over the now againg and commercially over-blown Pavarotti should purchase this CD. This is the great tenor in his prime and as such a CD well worth having...even if you're not a Pavarotti fan.
I'm still not, but I recognize greatness when I hear it.

Great Music......Horrible Mastering.......2004-07-24

Pavarotti has a voice that can take hold of you and change your entire mood...even if you don't know Italian. The problem with this set is the mastering (mastering evens out the volumes and signal to noise ratio on an album). The first CD in this collection is so quiet that you literally have to crank your player to get any kind of volume. For a professional CD this is absolutely unacceptable.
The song choices are good with the exception of "My Way" with Frank Sinatra. Both singers sound ....ummm...let's just say less than their best on the recording. It sits out like a boil on a pretty girl's face.

With his wondrous soaring vocals and the humble demeanor within his strong body, Pavarotti is an inspiration to Italian- Americans everywhere - Italian-Americans like me. My family plays his beautiful operas on vinyl nearly every day in me Papa's little wine and cheese shop on 18th and Broadway. The customers compliment the music with glee, pinching my plump cheeks with merriment and wishing me well on their way out the door. Ah, how I love this land of America!!

Everything about Bryn Terfel is over-life-size: his physique, his personality, his breath-control, and of course his extraordinarily beautiful voice. This recording displays his stunning vocalism and versatility to full advantage, but its title belies its content. Alhough it does include some simple pieces, the execution is fussy, overdone, and calculated for maximum external effect. The program ranges from Mozart, Pergolesi and pseudo-Bach to Sondheim in arrangements that are pure Hollywood, complete with throbbing strings and rolling drums, often destroying the spirit as well as the letter of the original compositions. It begins with Mozart's heavenly "Ave verum" arranged for baritone solo and chorus, frustratingly cut off after a few phrases (another setting of the same text by Karl Jenkins, written for Terfel, is more satisfying, being complete and original). The splendid baritone Simon Keenlyside joins him here as well as in the opening number of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater;" originally for soprano and alto, this must be the baritones' revenge on female singers who usurp songs written for men, like Schubert's and Schumann's cycles. Franck's "Panis angelicus" also inexplicably becomes a duet; unfortunately, Terfel's and tenor Aled Jones' voices do not match. Bach-Gounod's popular "Ave Maria" is all swells and exaggerations. The rest of the program consists of folksongs, hymns, show and film tunes, inflated to operatic proportions and generally ending in a fade-out or a flourish. Even the title song is anything but simple. This record is not for purists who like their music performed the way the composer wrote it, but aficionados of great singing will love it. --Edith Eisler

Bryn Terfel has a beautiful voice. Listening to him is very pleasant and definitely something to look forward to. I read a review saying he would replace tenor Pavroti. However, I believe that Mr. Terfel is a Baritone and not a Tenor. That does not detract from the fact that he should be considered one of the world's top male singers. His voice is truly impressive. This CD by Bryn Terfel is one from our collection that is outstanding and a favorite.

Sorry, I think this guy is one of the most overrated singers out there today. He always sounds like he is singing holding his nose shut. VERY nasal sounding.

If you want to listen to an incredibly beautiful voice, buy one of Josh Groban's CD's--you won't regret it! He has the voice of the century!

Excellent selection of music. It covers many different types. My wife likes being able to hear the words with out instruments drowning out the vocals. I find it relaxing and many of the songs are familiar and very well done.

Bryn Terfel's Simple Gifts.......2006-02-25

Simply superb. I don't know what our local (Wash DC) paper was talking about when they said Deep River was the weakest link. I was enthralled from beginning to end. I have had the pleasure of hearing Bryn Terfel live in recital at the Kennedy Center. I can assure you that his voice has only improved with age. He was wonderful then and is spectacular now!

A Heartfelt Offering Reminiscent of An Earlier Era.......2006-02-15

Bryn Terfel harkens back to earlier American operatic stars such as Richard Tucker and Robert Merrill who crossed grenres to satisfy their unquenchable need to sing any and all songs that moved them to an appreciative public. These great singers all had their origins singing sacred music from their respective religions and learned to lay their considerable talents before the altar of the simple inspirational song.

This recording is wonderful on many levels. The selections are an unusual mixture of classical sacred music, spirituals, hymns, Lieder, Austrian Christmas and Gaelic songs, musical numbers and movie theme songs harmoniously combined to touch the soul of the listener in a gentle ebb and flow of devotion, intensity and tenderness. All of these songs are beautiful in and of themselves and in his hands, we experience them anew.

Bryn Terfel sings with the commitment necessary to make the awesome challenge of simplicity look easy. To my way of thinking, he is the most communicative and articulate singer today, bar none. He is a poet who savors the sound, feeling and meaning of each and every word and marries it uniquely and faithfully to the music. He transports the listener into the life of a song and transfixes us each and every moment. His enormous talent is not overwhelming or distractive and is inextricably and wholly intertwined with the music. This is greatness and it is very, very rare today.

I like the inclusion of the choir in several of the numbers as it reflects on the nature and context of the songs. I am less fond of the selections with the guest soloists as I feel they do not match his ability to "get inside" a song. The orchestra and orchestations are sensitive and enhancing.

This recording is simply wonderful and should have a broad appeal. It will move and inspire the believer, satisfy and fulfill the otherwise spiritual, calm the troubled and renew a flagging soul.

The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord alway (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises--particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. --Matthew Westphal

Absolutely beautiful baroque music! The arrangament, singing and instrumentation is superb. It is too bad that Henry Purcell is not as widely known as Bach, because he should be recognized equally well."The Sparrow and the Gentle dove" is alone worth the price of the album! Like in his renditions of Handel's oratorios, Robert King manages to bring a freshness and strenght to Purcell's music that I had seldom heard before. This CD also features some of the best performers of early music in the world. My favourite tracks are Oh, Fair Cedaria, sung by the multi-talented Barbara Bonney; Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher; She Loves and she Confesses too, sung by the wonderful Susan Gritton; and Welcome, Welcome Glorious Morn, sung by Rogers Covey-Crump. The only track I didn't find absolutely wonderful is Fairest Isle, sung here by James Bowman. Don't get me wrong, I generally love Mr Bowman, I think that his performance in Mr Purcell's Most Admirable Composures (also conducted by Robert King) makes it another essential Purcell recording; but I find that Fairest Isle was much better done elsewhere, particularly by Christopher Hogwood and Barbara Bonney.

These songs aren't only beautiful, they're also poignant, sweet and unpretentious. I think that it will be very clear to anyone who listens to this recording that Mr Purcell was one of the finest composers that ever lived.

Be Welcome then, great Sirs (and Mesdames)........2001-10-20

If anyone has benefitted from the reversion in the last three or so decades to period instruments and historical reconstruction, it is Henry Purcell. Before, he was merely great, the peerless word-setter in the English language, a virtuoso of boundless range, a professional composer whose offical commissions were always imbued with personality and invention. But period instrumentation has added to this a greater depth, an other-worldly texture of sound. With his intricate, multi-part vocal writing, his preference for low, rumbling instruments such as the bass viol and the strange and remarkable theorbo, as well as his often sombre and low-key subject matter and treatment, Purcell creates a round, glowing, humming sound as pregnantly full as dub reggae.

This has an extraordinary effect on the listener. Whereas Bach, with his mathematical abstractions, sounds universal and timeless, Purcell's music takes the listener back 300 years, back to different ways of thinking about, feeling about and addressing things we still think etc. about today - death, love, friendship. The emotion is timeless, but the music's beauty is alien, THEIRS, hence its preciousness.

A lot of intelligence has gone into the unity of this compilation, beginning with two Welcomes (to the dawn and to the listener, in this case a King), and ending with thoughts of evening, death and a Baroque 'Thank you for the music'. These are bright, fanfare-like works, but the predominant mood is slow, ruminative, quiet. The selection covers the wide range of Purcell's oeuvre, from opera and funeral marches to secular songs and odes, and includes his most famous vocal works - Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher, and never more evocative of pagan loss and death; the massive 'Bell Anthem', with its ingenious opening symphony and joyful antiphon; and a miraculously serene 'Evening Hymn', Dido's opposite, death indicating hope, the treble voice swirling over the heavy ground bass like the soul released from the inert body.

it might seem quixotic to choose highlights from an exemplary collection of highlights, but the entry of the strings washing over the serene repetition of 'Be Welcome then, great Sir' always makes my heart stop still, while the musical picture of 'Bold Honour', the 'noisy Nothing, stalking shade', blocking the poet's amorous intentions in 'She loves and confesses too', adds a chilling hint of life's transience to a bouyantly bawdy song.

Brilliant Purcell Disc .......2000-11-30

With this album director and Purcell expert Robert King provides the listener with an excellent introduction to the composer's vocal works. The pieces presented here were taken from Mr. King's recordings of 'The Complete Odes and Welcome Songs', 'The Complete Anthems and Services', 'The Complete Secular Solo Songs' and diverse anthology discs. King, his wonderful soloists and musicians do the brilliance of Purcell's music fully justice. Whether he was commissioned by royalty, the church or theatre, Purcell shone in all areas. This disc certainly demonstrates the variety and originality of his craft, not to speak of his uncanny ability of setting words to music.

An outstanding Purcell offering. With a beautiful perfomance by Barbara Bonney of 'Oh, fair Cedaria'. Susan Gritton is equally captivating in 'She loves and she confesses too'. Gillian Fisher's rendition of the famous 'Dido's Lament' is haunting and poignant. Further an intelligent and brilliant 'Hosanna to the highest' by Michael George. James Bowman and Michael Chance sparkle in the countertenor duet 'Sound the trumpet' (from 'Come Ye sons of Art away'). And I should not forget to mention the joyous, luminous performance of the beautiful 'Bell Anthem'. To name but a few favourites, only James Bowman's 'Fairest Isle' was a disappointment.

Those who are familiar with Purcell's music will get an excellent disc with some of his most beloved works. If you are new to Purcell, this is, as already said a great introduction. Which might be the incentive to further explorations of Purcell.

So is generally regarded as a peak in Gabriel's recording career, notable both for its solid set of songs and lush yet musicianly production. For Gabriel, who'd put his music in theatrical contexts ever since his days with Genesis, the modern sound of So (co-produced with Daniel Lanois) was itself a dramatic conceit that effectively played off the more organic roots of many of its songs. The album's big hit was "Sledgehammer," the English rocker's somewhat stilted take on the Stax/Volt style of rhythm & blues. Gabriel was much more powerful on his own art-rock songs, such as "Red Rain," which evoked nuclear ruin with its cascading rush of guitars and synthesizers. "Don't Give Up" is perhaps Gabriel's best ballad, with Kate Bush's heavenly second vocal enough to give anybody encouragement. But the song that best exploited So's blend of technology and soul is "In Your Eyes," a beguiling rhythmic tapestry in which Gabriel duets with Youssou N'dour. --John Milward

Former Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel released his fifth studio solo album So in May of 1986.
1986 was the year of Genesis past and present. Ex-Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett released his hit collaboration with Yes guitarist Steve Howe called GTR's self-titled album. Also, Hackett and Gabriel's ex-colleages which were the rest of Genesis (Phil collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford) released the hugely successful Invisible Touch under the Genesis moniker.
A month before Invisible Touch, Gabriel released So which was a year in the making but was well worth the time it took to create this now classic to rock history.
Gabriel and his supreme team of session players, including the reliable Tony Levin on bass, David Rhodes on guitar plus Police drummer Stewart Copeland and drummers Manu Katche and Rick Marotta.
The thunderous "Red Rain" is a stellar opener to this album and is possibly his best solo track. Next is the smash hit "Sledgehammer" (with Gabriel going a bit funky on the R&B thing) and was rightfully a #1 hit. Ironically, it KO-ed his ex-bandmembers' "Invisible Touch" single out of #1 in the US. Also this track's video was groundbreaking with its animation effects. Next is the excellent duet with Kate Bush called "Don't Give Up" (w/ Kate Bush) which is a stellar song and one of the best duets I ever heard. we end the first half with the atmospheric sounding "That Voice Again" which was a rock radio hit yet didn't get released to pop radio.
"Mercy Street" starts the second half off (it was "In Your Eyes" but Gabriel changed the CD tracklisting for the remaster) and is a nice piece. We follow with another big hit called "Big Time" which featured Stewart Copeland on drums and was also known for its classic video. The original vinyl album's closer "We Do What Were Told" is reminiscent of Gabriel's darker material. It's brief, lyrically simple, but very, very haunting. The original CD and cassette closer "This Is The Picture" is a terrific, light-groove collaboration with avant-garde artist Laurie Anderson which combined singing with spoken word, and the funky guitar of Nile Rodgers. The original album's second half opener and now album closer "In Your Eyes" is the album's most well known hit. This track was a #1 on US rock radio and is a nice love song and featured The Call's Michael Been and Simple Minds frontman Jim Kerr on backing vocals plus African singer Y'oussor N'Dour helping out at the end.
So became peter gabriel's biggest selling solo album reaching #2 on the Billboard album charts and has sold FIVE million copies to date in the US alone. The album was nominated for the Grammy for Album Of The Year, but it lost to Paul Simon's Graceland (why in the Blue Hell was this dude still winning Grammies when he was past his prime). However, Gabriel did win Video of the Year for "Sledgehammer" which ironically beat his old Genesis mates' "Land of Confusion" video. Aside sales, So proved Peter Gabriel was a force to be recoked with.

This album has everything; Rock pieces like Red Rain, a song full of emotions about a dream of swimming on red water, pop songs like Sledgehammer, an incredibly famous song with a stunning music video whic won 6 prices on the MTV music awards of that time, Don't Give Up, that is also on the vocals with Kate Bush, In Your Eyes, his most famous love song, Mercy Street, Big Time, a catchy, fun and cheerful song alike with Sledgehammer; the album also contains new experimentations seen before in Security (The Family And The Fishing Net, San Jacinto) like We Do What We're Told (Milgram 37) about the famous experiment of Stanley Milgram, That Voice Again and This Is The Picture (Excellent Birds).

It has everything and the album will be frozen in time as Peter Gabriel's best album.

GABRIEL'S BLOCKBUSTER ALBUM.
RUINED BY MEDIOCRE SOUND QUALITY, KNOCKING A FIVE STAR CLASSIC DOWN TO THREE STARS. DO NOT BUY THE ORIGINAL, BUT GET THE REMASTERED VERSION INSTEAD.

Released in 1986, this was Gabriel's blockbuster album. And it deserved it. This is just great from beginning to end. It features great collaborations with Kate Bush and Laurie Anderson.

Unfortunately, coming out in 1986, the CD sound quality was mediocre. This was very suprising for Gabriel who had embraced digital technology years earlier. The sound is flat with limited dynamic range.

Many of the early CD's had mediocre sound quality, which gave rise to the vinyl snobs who thought CD's could never sound as good as LP's. But, it was just a bad translation to the digital technoology. Today, CD's sound much better than they did 20 years ago. Which is why you see so many "remaatered" CD's today. That includes the complete Gabriel catalog.

Not only being the most popular Gabriel CD, it is his best. That is saying a lot since, he has had many very good CD's.

The very good tracks on this cd are "Red Rain" and "Mercy Street"
Great commercial success with "Sledgehammer", "Don't give up", "In your eyes" and "Big Time"..These four songs have been heard to often maybe, but still good occasionnaly to listen to. Two weak songs close the album, "We do what we're told" and "This is the picture", I go with four star for this album.

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).
