Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly Strong Release.......2007-03-16
This album didn't get a lot of media attention, which isn't surprising. GP Wu's album didn't exactly set the world on fire, and the Wu-Tang brand name in general had lost its sting after a series of mediocre releases from both the Clan itself and an endless parade of 'associate' performers. In this case, though, the hip-hop community missed out on a small gem.
Given a solo stage, Pop Da Brown Hornet really gets to flex his skills as an MC. Add in some very nice production from RNS and his team, and you've got a very solid album for fans of underground-style hip-hop. The opening salvo of tracks are worth the price of admission alone. 'Follow Me Up' is the rare track that club rats AND hardcore hip-hop heads can get into. (Apparently, running a video for the song at 4 A.M. on BET wasn't enough to break it wide open.) 'One Shot Deal' is a very nice group cut, which lets three virtually unknown rappers show what the underground is capable of. And 'Endangered Species' has the wild energy of a grade-A freestyle, with the Brown Hornet flowing nicely.
The album loses a little steam towards the end (especially with the obligatory radio-friendly R&B cuts), but considering how cheap this record is (either used or new) in the Amazon Marketplace, it's a no-brainer purchase for fans of underground hip-hop. It's a shame that Pop didn't get the kind of promotion he deserved... his would be a solo career worth following.
Undaground Flava.......2006-08-14
For all underground heads, wu tang fans, or for those who want the pure essence of the real wu tang look no further. I thought this was nothing less than amazing. Why the 4 stars? Its actually 4.5 stars, only because a 5 star LP from the WU is CUBAN LINX.
Wow, He Needs Promotion........2005-11-21
How come this album didn't get any kind of exposure? There are plenty of Underground Cats that do get exposure, and Pop should have been one of them. It looks like from the time he was with GP Wu till this album came out, he polished up his skills. I'm not saying on GP's album he was bad. He was pretty good. But on this album, damn, he's spitting fire. The only complaints I have is the songs Stand Up and Hold Ground are some wack songs. Hold Ground has the most corniest chorus. But other than that, this album is strong. The best is Follow Me Up, the Marley Marl remix. One, it has Marley Marl behind the beats. (note LL, your man can still produce, maybe you need to get him to lace tracks for you again.) I think Marley even gets a verse in. Also One Shot Deal where Pop and two MC's, which I have no idea who, doesn't sound like the GP Wu members, rip it up. Get this, support true hip hop. If not, continue to support wack artist like Nelly, Chingy, Lil Flip and G-Unit.
Da' Underground Emperor...........2003-01-04
Often the most under-exposed and under-appreciated talent, is the best.... This is a piece of work that needs re-release and better marketing and promotions... Something for the real hip-hop head.... Someone besides me needs to recognize....The Best is Yet to Come... D-Dutch, Baby!
DOPE! Pop da brown bomber went solo!.......2001-06-05
I had GP WU's LP too and I liked POP the best. There are only 2 tracks that are NOT good but the rest of the album is very very well done. Beats and rhymes go well together and POP not only has a cool energy and delivery but conscience rhymes that actually MEAN something! "Hold Ground" and "Stand Up" are R&B laced tracks that need to be skipped but like I said, ALL of the other songs are DOPE!!! "Black On Black crime" was released on the GPWU album and it's the same version. Most of the production is done by Hasaan and RNS. Marly MArl did the remix for FOLLOW ME UP. My favz are "Follow Me Up" (the original version), "I'm Sooo", "Black On Black Crime", "No More Mr. Nice Guy" and "Endangered Species." Actually.. EVERY single song is dope except for the 2 with R&B hooks and R&B-type beats. POP DA BROWN HORNET, baby!
