5 out of 5 stars Must have for Power Metal fans.......2000-10-21

This is one of the best albums I have ever heard! The vocalist has incredible range, the guitar playing is great as is the rest of the musicianship. No keyboards, I usually like keys but I dont miss them here. They have a unique, slightly 80's retro sound that might be a pleasant diversion from Blind Guardian, Symphony X ,Eternity X, Iced Earth et al (all awesome bands) My only complaint is that some of the songs are a bit repetitive. The lyrics have are meaningful but might be a tad simplistic. Despite those minor nits, a great CD for power metal fans that have a little extra cash burning for something new and somewhat different.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......1999-02-22

A good record, definitely worth checking out. Sharp vocals, excellent musicians, and great composition. Power/prog for the next millenium.

4 out of 5 stars technically US power metal of highest class.......1999-01-02

New Eden are definetely not newcomers on the american power metal scene - started by ex-Steel Prophet guitarist this band plays superb technical power metal in the 80s style - easily compared to classacts as Helstar and Sanctuary. Great rffing and cool vocallines, make "Obsucre Master Plan" one of the best US Power Metal albums of the 90s. Hail the rebirth of true metal!!!

This was Weckl's debut as a leader after years as a session musician and member of Chick Corea's Elektric and Akoustic Bands, and it's an arresting display of his drum chops and rhythmic know-how, whether he's playing or matching parts with a drum program. The rhythms range from Latin-techno on "Festival de Ritmo" to the light swing of acoustic jazz on "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise." Weckl is joined by a number of eminent associates, including Michael Brecker and Eric Marienthal on saxophones. Chick Corea himself plays on his tune "Master Plan," and fellow drummer Steve Gadd joins Weckl for some particularly complex polyrhythms. The music sometimes takes a backseat to Weckl's pyrotechnics, but that's in keeping with a musician initially inspired by Buddy Rich. Weckl has effectively extended that aggressive approach to embrace technology, and Master Plan is full of the same kind of inspiration for younger drummers. --Stuart Broomer

    5 out of 5 stars Fab.......2006-11-13

Recently dug this one out of my archives ..... and it is still as great as when I first purchased it.

Some wonderful guitar-work on "Here & There" from Gambale and some great keyboards on "Garden Wall" - this is a very solid and enjoyable album from start to finish - it still entertains and inspires.

5 out of 5 stars Highly skilled drummer.......2004-04-29

This CD was distributed by GRP label. That' why total sound design is so polished and sophisticated.Dave's rhythmic approach is so complicated but sharply totalized and well-organized.The songwriting sense is brilliant enough too demonsrate his talents. In Japan ,for example, his tunes are used in the sports program on TV many times.I don't think this is a elevator music. This maybe best described as a instructional CD for drum beginners.Fine techniques and BIG NAMES guest appearances also help this CD to be a well-balanced high tech FUSION ALBUM ever.

5 out of 5 stars Man oh man, he is great!!!.......2004-04-17

This is Dave's first solo c.d. and it is definetly the most tastefull fusion c.d.. Wow, the drums are extremely good especially the third track. I personally think the third track is fenomenonal. It is definetly one of those c.ds that you just never get bored of! You can lisen to one track for hours and you will not get bored! The bass, horns, and Steve Gaad are great on this record. You heard me, Steve Gadd playes on this record with dave! If you want the greatest fusion expierience, buy this c.d..

    2 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2003-10-17

sure, Daves drumming is really good. But musicially, this is simply not entertaining at all. from all the raving reviews this record got, I thought it to be much better. this sounds like an intro to a TV-series most of the time, so polished that the groove is totally lost. This record hasn't aged well, to say the least. But who knows, you might like it, I didn't.

    3 out of 5 stars Good Fun.......2003-06-05

    Strange...
GRP as a lable has probably produced more elevator music than jazz records in the last 20 years, however this CD (which I picked up in 1992 for the Anthony Jackson bass playing) is a nice surprise in that the surrounding musicians do a nice job laying structures over Dave Weckl drum work.

-Good Soprano Sax throughout the CD
    -Great bass playing
-If you can get passed the 90's synth-keys the playing is solid
-Really well played guitar work dropped in and around

Some of the songs are alittle bit grocery store jazz but it's a great CD for the car.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is Excellent - Start to Finish.......2006-06-30

If there were any justice in the world, Bobgoblin/Adventures of Jet would have topped the charts for the last 10 years.

Honestly, this CD is near perfect power pop -- somehow calling it 'power pop' really doesn't do the music justice, but I can't think of a better description. This CD may be out of print now... but if you see it for sale, buy it. Witty, poetic lyrics -- thick with irony and sarcasm. Outstanding musicianship, outstanding vocals, and excellent production.

There's not a bad track here. If you can listen to this CD and resist the temptation to bust out your air guitar and sing along you've probably got more self control than is healthy. These guys rock. The Adventures of Jet CD's are excellent as well -- buy them all.

5 out of 5 stars wow so much better than your favorite band.......2005-03-30

bobgoblin are the real deal, they went on to be the adventures of jet which are so good also. i hear that bobgoblin have played a few shows recently and that rules. this album is a new wave masterpiece for a new generation, hop litzwire's vocals really make this album go. cruncy guitars and that rock sound, what more could you want? check out the adventures of jet also, these guys are so talented, too bad corporate america will never notice, that's okay, it can be our secret, the real music fans already know.....rock on

      5 out of 5 stars Spaced out........2003-07-31

Bobgoblin aka adventures of jet and whatever else they have been called produce a great poppy rock cd here that really grows on you, although they dont have the keyboard effects that made up adventures of jet later on the music still manages to maintain the amount of quality throughout. Trust me you want to pick this up and try and find what else the bands released (under different names) and then go on to adventures of jet with their releases coping with insignificance and muscle. This album however is good in the way the album runs through smoothly and creates a very lucid sound throughout.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Power Pop.......2003-03-08

O.K. So this might not be burning up your CD player like some of those hot new releases. What Bobgoblin brings to the table are consistently good, hooky, kind of retro sounding pop tunes, propelled forward by tight arrangements, rockin' guitars and sing along choruses. Stand out tracks are Standing Up, Climb, and Pretty In My Uniform. With that said, pretty much all of these tunes are decent. For the price you can't go wrong. This is one of the best deals out there. Along with The Wannadies, Tsar, Sugar Bomb, The Elms, and Owsley, to name a few, Bobgoblin is a very good example of budget power pop.

5 out of 5 stars Just Plain Genius!.......1998-11-27

Bobgoblin takes Devo into the new millennium. With songs so clever that you want to slap them and a tight sound that that will rock the paint off your walls, "The Twelve-Point Master Plan" is a GUARANTEED hit for any true fan of original music. Be sure to check out "Nine". It rocks!

5 out of 5 stars The "Essence" of Phenomenal Music.......2003-12-17

In Essence is the "essence" of phenomenal music. Not only do they have the beats, they have the rhymes, the voices, and the moves. This cd is platinum work with a compilation of "Smooth" beats, hardcore "Pops," "Touch-ing" lyrics, and of course, the voice of "Dru." There's no "Que"stion about it; this is one of the greatest cds out there. Coming from Canada, yet launching from NYC, they represent the very best of "not-quite-international" international music.

The interludes (#1, 4, 8, 11, 13, 16) give insight on each band member's personailty, and draw the listener to a more personal level. They link the artists, the music, and the listener together to form a medley of deeply felt emotions.

      2. Who Are We - A fantastically performed a cappella with tight vocals about who I.E. is
      3. You Will Never Find - A pumping and upbeat song
      5. I.E. - A great combination of rhythm and beats. Another single
      6. Friend of Mine - Their first single, and an unparalleled one. This one has a wicked back beat to it
      7. MelodI.E. - A sensual song that still remains true to I.E.'s style
      9. Do Watchya Like - "Yo, this is for the people that go into the clubs and just do what they wanna do..." An "irie" and lively club song
      10. Closer - Another one like MelodI.E., but different. It is sensual with a grinding beat
      12. Change - A song with very deep lyrics
      14. Go Ahead - A really sweet slow jam about a guy singing to his girl who betrayed his love. This is really emotional
      15. Lay You Down - A sensual slow jam

All the songs are amazing. This cd can be played over and over without skipping any of the tracks. They are all catchy, and the songs that grab on the first listen are "Friend of Mine," "I.E.," "Do Watcha Like," and "Go Ahead." Most of the songs have bumping beats (as if I haven't used that word enough yet), with the exception of the slow songs and some of the interludes. This band is TIGHT. Trust me.

      5 out of 5 stars What a surprise!.......2003-10-05

I heard them 1st on new years eve bash '02 on philip's sqaure, toronto. loved their music from 1st moment onwards. back in germany I tried to find the CD everywhere. nowhere to find. just here on amazon.ca ... hope CD will be available asap here in germany!

5 out of 5 stars Sublime In Essence.......2003-08-18

This is a great CD with awesome beats. The interludes are cute and the songs are good. Their single "Friend of Mine" is what inspired me to make an impulsive buy after hearing them for the first time in Canada. They've all got incredible voices, and they come together so well to form the music that they sing. I brought the CD over to the U.S., but I was disappointed to find that they haven't come over here, yet. Hopefully they will soon.

As for the 16 track CD:
*"Who Are We" is an a cappella
*"You Will Never Find" has a nice beat to it
*"I.E." has a nice background rhythm to it
*"Friend of Mine" is one of the best songs on their album
      "Melodi.e" is all right
"Do What You Like," "Closer," and "Change" are all pretty good
*"Go Ahead" is a slower song about unrequited love after a relationship
"Lay You Down" is another slow song.

Interludes are woven between these tracks.
My favorites have asterisks by them, and I encourage everyone to buy a copy. Listen to this five man group. They are truly sublime in essence

4 out of 5 stars This is a different Masterplan.......2004-12-07

For the record, those of you looking for the European metal band with Ark/Helloween/Iron Savior members should know this is a different band, even though it comes up in the same listing.

4 out of 5 stars Dictators meet The Fleshtones.......2004-05-03

God Bless Andy Shernoff for pulling together Keith Streng and Bill Milhizer of The Fleshtones and Paul Johnson of Waxing Poetics for an old-school rock 'n' roll session. Heavy shades of Shernoff's Dictators and The Fleshtones, mixed with flavors of surf, '60s garage and '70s glam. Three of the four contribute tunes, including Shernoff's late-Dictators era, "What's Up With That," Johnson's Ramones-y "You're Mine," and Streng's buzzing surf instrumental "Picketts Charge."

Not surprisingly, these rock 'n' roll old-timers rework some unusual covers, including Peppermint Harris' "I Got Loaded," Lloyd Price's R&B lament "Just Because," and Hank Ballard's answer-song "Annie Had a Baby." The latter provides particularly fertile ground for the band to Rock. This record is fun from end to end. It's too bad Lester Bangs isn't alive to review it in Creem.
