4 out of 5 stars Great album, stupid marketing.......2007-07-18

This is a great album of cover tunes. The band sounds tight and performs excellent versions of these songs. The marketing concept is insane. If you want the second disc, you have to go to a show to get it. That sucks if you can't go to a show. I think the 2nd disc will eventually be released. If you are a fan of Tesla, buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars what more can i say " awesome ".......2007-07-10

let me start by saying i love live music and covers . it's a no lose situation unless they murder the songs . which are not done here .i have every tesla cd , and "into the now" was just as great as "mechanical resonance" . so to come out with a cover album , was a great idea . it's not an album thrown together with filler songs . they had to learn the music , and then to replicate it with minor tweaks .awesome job . the musicianship here is incredible ,and jk could always sing .yea, it's a bummer about cd2 ,but hey ,spend the money and go see em .you'll love it .i've seen em 3 times ,and they rock . "ball of confusion" is my choice for best song here. but it's hard to argue against any of em , the guitar work is downrite NASTY ,"day of the eagle ", "rock bottom" , "walk away " , "stealin'". two thumbs up , a must have . now after this great return of tesla , i hope for a new one to come .

4 out of 5 stars another cover.......2007-07-08

another great cover cd IT is SLICK of them to only make the second half of this set available from the concert (should be made available other ways) what if they do not come near me how am I suposed to get the 2nd half but I must say a brilliant marketing idea

5 out of 5 stars Powerhouse for Day on the Green Lovers!.......2007-07-07

I love this CD! Yeah, you gotta go to the concert to get the second CD, SO WHAT! So you got to go to a rock concert and that pisses you off? Go listen to pop then! I love the concept, because I loved the Tesla sound originally, and have wanted to hear more. I would love to see them in concert and am hoping that they will add the tour dates for Nor Cal. Who is the faithful fan? I'm one I admit. Even though a cover cd, it does remind me of the day long concerts with 5-6 bands playing, the mandatory t-shirt, and the riffs that last for 10 minutes -- how I miss those days!!! Contrary to other reviews I like the vocals and simply love the guitar work on this album, incredible!!! Hope you like it too!

5 out of 5 stars This ain't no cover re-hash!.......2007-07-06

First let me say this. Tesla is a "peoples band". They have always been a band of the people. No compromise, no frills, just musicians that know what blues based rock and roll is all about. Even with their side projects such as Moondog Mane and Bar 7, the band went around the loop of rock, then reformed on the Hear and Now disc, which by the way is a CLASSIC disc.

This disc, made me smile, especially with versions of Bad Reputation by Thin Lizzy and Rock Bottom by UFO. Christ all mighty, if this doesn't make you want to get in your car, and go blow a hole in the wind, while cranked to 10, then you are dead from the neck up.

Can't wait for the tour to venture down San Antonio way, because this cowboy his a ticket buyer! Thanks Guys, for first, recording the disc in my home state. That is right, down El Paso way is where this little gem was brewed up! And for keeping your music and your hearts real. God Bless you and and keep on rockin!

Still remember when you rocked Ector County with Def Leppard and when you headlined with Great White. Memories forever!

Cowboy Craig of the Coastal Bend.

Angèle Dubeau is a remarkable violinist, and here, she and her all-woman, 12-strong (including herself) group, La Pieta, tackle some of the showiest---and most interesting---virtuoso pieces composed or transposed for solo violin and strings, in various combinations, and occasionally featuring a piano. The violin tone at the start of Saint-Saens' Danse Macabre has a warmth which stays with us throughout the disc, despite the fact that so many of the pieces are razzle-dazzle. Hearing the delicious can-can from the overture to Orpheus in the Underworld so thrillingly played, with as much emphasis on the piano as the violin, is a treat, and the "Fire dance" from El amor brujo positively throbs. There's great skill---even daring---in the Tartini "Devil's Trill" sonata and a Boccherini Sonata, but the string tone never turns strident. And as a complete surprise, Dubeau and her group offer an arrangement of The Rolling Stones' "Paint it Black" which teases and riffs before getting into the melody, then plays it in the lower reaches of the instrument, and is then joined by the piano, allowing it to reach upwards and jazzily improvise---and then she throws in a moment or two of "Sympathy for the Devil" (!) before it concludes with the original melody. There are other joys on this CD as well---this is not your everyday violin bon-bon recital. It's all highly recommended. --Robert Levine

Album Description

This mischievious recital celebrates works inspired by the Devil: from Tartini's Devil's Trill, written after the composer dreamt that he had sold his soul to the Devil, to the infernal whirlwinds of Saint-Saën's Danse Macabre and Dompierre's Les Beautés du diable, composed specifically for La Pietà. It also pays homage to Paganini, the famed violinist who once confided to a friend that the Devil led him by the hand. This program shows an impish sense of humor as well... it features a unique arrangement of The Rolling Stones' Paint it Black and Sympathy for the Devil! • Angèle Dubeau is one of Canada's most prominent recording artists. belonging to the exclusive group of Canadian classical soloists who can boast of having attained "gold" sales status. She is also the founder and director La Pietá. • This CD is packaged with a bonus DVD featuring video clips and live concert excerpts.

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!.......2007-02-15

I ADORE this CD. I first heard it on the local classical music station and my ears picked right up. "What IS that?" It was so alive, so vibrant. The station only plays it about once a year, but each time it catches my attention. "Ah, that's Angele Dubeau." The selections are a mix of new and old. Two of the new pieces are by Francois Dompierre; his "Le Diable matou" is one of my favorites. I play this CD over and over and over...

I disagree with the reviewer who said you must love violin music to enjoy this. I do enjoy the violin, but I think the CD's power and reach go far beyond violin lovers.

The CD also includes a DVD of concert excerpts.

Give this CD a try. I'm so glad I did.

5 out of 5 stars Eduardo Carlos Leon.......2007-02-01

The sound is tight and fresh. But take heed--only a person who love`s violin works would enjoy this c-d.And i would be one of those persons.ESP.Hot Women with violins!!!

4 out of 5 stars Unique and pleasant........2006-12-23

It is refreshing to hear something new. The tracks are old favorites but the sound is new. Different. And in a good way.
Not the same old interpretations sped up or slowed down. But a genuine new groove down a familiar road.
She is a great violinist and has a knack for interplay with the rest of the band. It's not a flashy highly technical performance like you may expect from Perlman or Mutter. But not on the emotional ragged edge like Sonnenberg. But something in between with a new twist.

5 out of 5 stars Emotional, Powerful, Fizzy.......2005-05-19

Long a stodgy devotee of baroque music, with the first few notes of this strong stuff I became an addict. Over and over again I play this CD, never quite anticipating the power and emotional bang of the music as it plays - even though I know the notes by now. If you ever studied Walter Piston's "harmony" the structures and transitions are back-of-the-book stuff, but the push is all elemental, basic, built-in, the familiar 1-4-5 with musical sequins, trampolines, backflips, and gelginite. Wow. And then some.

I'm so besotted, I had a couple of 13-year old boys (my son and a friend) listen to it in the car one day. They were bug-eyed after a couple of cuts, and not with horror. Now they ask for it, and yell with glee when the musical tension breaks over their heads in crashing chords.

Can I add a few more stars?

5 out of 5 stars Infernal Violins.......2004-04-12

This music is fantastic. Because the violin she uses is a Stradovarius, the music pours like liquid velvet out of it. The choices of compositions are fantastic also. I think her interpretation of them along with the violin and her back-up group are what make this album so outstanding.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, light album from an underappreciated MC.......2006-12-05

After Brand Nubian's breakup following their classic debut album "One for All," the obvious star of the group Grand Puba decided to go in a very different direction as a solo artist and released his debut "Reel to Reel." In sharp contrast to "One for All," which was a very socially relevant record, "Reel to Reel" is a light and entertaining record that's all about Puba having fun on the mic. One could even call it a party album, it is consistently happy and upbeat. If I were to compare his style on this album to any MC, I might say Slick Rick to give you an idea this album. Lyrically, he uses a lot of funny punchlines and metaphors that will actually make you laugh, and he uses battle-style raps a lot of the time. The rest of the time he has a very laidback style, except for the handful of tracks where he does kick knowledge in the socially conscious side. He has a great flow and sometimes shows a little bit of reggae influence in his raps too. Puba is a really great MC, and he is backed here by the DJ and producer from "One for All," DJ Alamo. Alamo is awesome on the mixing boards, and his tracks combine great sampling with good bass and heavy horn instrumentation to make a funky, jazzy style that was on the top of early 90s underground. "Reel to Reel" is pretty unknown compared to a lot of the other fairly similar works of the early 90s east coast hip hop, but it's a well executed entertaining album that combines great beats with a truly special MC.

"Check tha Resume" has boastful, braggadagio rhymes over a standard Alamo beat, it's a good start to the album. The single "360 Degrees (What Goes Around)" is a standout, with a really nice beat that has a funky bassline, it's Puba at his lyrical best. "That's How We Move It," is upbeat and happy sounding, just a head-nodding party kind of track. "Check It Out" uses a soulful vocal sample for a good production and Puba just entertains on this one. I think my favorite song is "Big Kids Don't Play," it has a really awesome beat with a slowed down drum-and-bass line and a droopy instrumental, Puba kicks humorous philosophy and sounds a little conversational. "Honey Don't Front" continues the list of great tracks in the beginning, Puba talks to a woman in a funny manner over a good beat. "Lickshot," "Ya Know How It Goes," and the title track are full of punchlines and dense funky beats. "Soul Controller" is the first track where he shows his social consciousness, he confronts politics and social matters in a lighter manner than Brand Nubian did. "Proper Education" continues the relevance, and it has a lot of pro-black lines that will make you think over a reggae-styled track, I really like this song. "Back It Up" is another strictly fun track with a good piano-laced beat, and Puba sings cleverly on "Baby What's Your Name?" The album ends with a nice "360 Degrees" remix and "Who Makes the Loot," an ultra-funky collaboration with The Brand New Heavies.

While I wouldn't call it a classic, "Reel to Reel" is a really great album that showcases awesome beats and an supremely talented rapper. This is one of Grand Puba's greatest musical triumphs and a joy to listen to, he always entertains with this album. Brand Nubian fans looking for more of "One for All" won't find it here, but fans of jazzy, fun early 90s New York rap will enjoy this album a ton. They really don't make rap albums like this anymore. I highly recommend it, this album never received its due attention and is a perfect piece for any hip hop collection.

    5 out of 5 stars www.sportofdistraction.com.......2005-11-06

Strictly classic material. This album will stand the test of time for all that can appreciate raw, unadulterated hip-hop. I will be listening to this album 20 years from now, and still be able to enjoy Puba's style. I'm not sure what happenned to him, because when I heard the last Brand Nubian album (2004), it was horrible. I dream of 1 day a comeback...not likely, but it's OK to dream.

5 out of 5 stars Brand Nubian member holds it down solo.......2004-10-15

Grand Puba is an MC known for his clever wordplay and funky delivery. He was a founding member of the groups Masters of Ceremony and Brand Nubian. Reel to Reel, his debut solo album is a classic. He shows that he can hold down an album all by himself and stay true to the Islamic/afrocentric thematics he displayed in his group efforts. Fans of Slick Rick, Biggie and 90s hip hop should pick up this release. Production is from Puba himself, the Stimulated Dummies and Kid Capri, among others, with guest appearances from Kid Capri and Mary J. Blige.

5 out of 5 stars Rhymes Light as Air from a Lyrical Terrorist.......2001-09-23

It is odd hearing Puba's rhymes now some 15 or so years since we used to stage battles in the New Rochelle HS (Now Rule Son!) lunchrooms on Friday nights ("M A X W E double L, ... who can't spell call me Grand Puba Maxwell!") Well, gone are the days of the Tre Bag MC's and rhymin over the analog 6 button beat box, but Puba manages to catch the frenetic, sometimes threatening flashes of virtuosity that defined NY street hip hop in the early 1980's (long live the Cold Crush 4). On Reel to Reel (they might have considered naming it Real to Reel by the way) Puba represents a variety of true MC styles with his signature wit and verbal dexterity. The brother's rhymes must be heard to be believed. Ironic thing about Puba is that though he clearly has touched on some eastern knowlege (5 Percent Nation), he is still not above dropping some old banging beats on the table, off the head, freestyle rhymes - check out Proper Education with Red Alert for some of this classic material. A common thread to his overall lyrical approach to this album is that most of his verses, even on the more structured cuts, retain that freestyle imrovisational flow. On the other hand, Puba is fully capable of identifying the injustice and treachery that is still afflicting most urban black communities today and conveying it with eloquence and polish -- Soul Controller has some of the deepest lyrics on the album. Yet, throughout this recording, Puba's personality and distinctive style prevades. He seems to posses an inner metronome that allows him to play on or with the beat as he kicks his lyrics. On this solo follow up to the underground bomb - One for All (Brand Nubian), Puba is at his lyrical and imaginative heights. This is one of the finest hip hop albums you will ever find - stictly East Coast material here. I am proud to have known this man when he developed this style as a teenager - he has become a true asset to the landscape of black musical virtuosity.

5 out of 5 stars The Big Kids Don't Play.......2000-06-06

na na na, Grand Puba is one of the most underrated rhymers ever, his melodies and styles that can go from ragga to r&b and slow to lightning speed, talking bout hittin skins or droppin knowledge with a confidence and relaxed flow that just lay on you all day, this is a great cd, as good as the first Brand Nubian cd, if not better. Big Kids, Honey Dont Front, 360 degrees are among the great tracks that make up this great cd.

This offbeat disc of seasonal songs and carols by the Anonymous 4 will delight their fans and please everyone else. The 19 selections include traditional folk melodies and texts, some of which date back to the Middle Ages, interspersed with fitting selections by contemporary composers including John Taverner, Benjamin Britten, and Peter Maxwell Davies, whose ethereal a cappella A Calender of Kings gets its first recording. Andrew Lawrence-King, playing Irish harp, Baroque harp, and psaltery with his accustomed finesse, is a major reason for the disc's success, accompanying most of the vocals and contributing three lovely solos. The disc is crammed with highlight tracks, like the lilting Cornish Wassail song and the Irish Good people all, and haunting numbers like "Flight into Egypt," sung in Gaelic, and "Behold, here is the best morning," sung in Welsh. Excellent sonics and Harmonia Mundi's typically fine production values also help make this a Christmas disc that will give joy in July. --Dan Davis

The recording is fine . . . it just didn't appeal to me personally

5 out of 5 stars lovely and unusual Yule album.......2004-01-06

Anonymous 4 has brought us a beautiful selection of 19 traditional songs from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. These include a lesser known work by Henry VIII as well as more contemporary songs by John Tavener, Richard Bennett, Geoffrey Burgon and Benjamin Britten, and a piece commissioned for the group from Peter Davies. Andrew Lawrence-King accompanies on Irish harp, Baroque harp and psaltery. There is a short essay on the traditions and legacy of the concept of Yule, a Cetic midwinter celebration, and this and the informative liner notes are given in English, French and German, accompanied by Celtic drawings.

The songs are pure, simple and very beautiful -- a welcome addition to your holiday listening.

    5 out of 5 stars Goose Flesh!.......2003-12-09

This is a remarkable quartet, singing with purity and style, from the haunting to the merry, medieval chant to modern settings of Celtic religious texts. Where there are arrangements, they are lovely and the instrumental pieces are simple and beautiful. This is the first time I have heard this group of women, and I am enchanted. It's a cappella at its very best: look to your laurels, King's Singers and Chanticleer, here come the ladies!

5 out of 5 stars the best !.......2006-07-16

As I'm mostly drawn to Celtic music with singing (Karen Matheson, etc.), I was surprised to find how fully satisfying this recording is - there is dancing and singing, and even flying in it!

The finest instrumental Celtic I've heard so far.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible as always.......2000-11-16

While I am sad that 1/3 of Helicon (Chris Norman, a flutist) is not on this CD, I am ecstatic that Bullock and Kolodner, the other 2/3, are expanding their roots. I was first introduced to Laura Risk at Helicon's annual Winter Solstice Concert in Baltimore a few years ago, and there was something very unique about her. Her playing wasn't fancy, it was just pure and from the heart. I am glad to see that Risk, Bullock, and Kolodner decided to release this magnificent album of mostly Irish music. Having not listened to this album for a while (I had begun to listen fiddlers like Natalie MacMaster, Ray Ellis etc.), I was amazed to hear the same Irish fiddle tunes arranged for a trio. It gives the music a whole different spin that is truly unique to Greenfire. For example, "The Cape Breton Fiddlers Welcome to Shetland," "Dinky's," and "Jackson's" are very popular fiddle tunes normally heard in Celidh-like settings, but here take on a whole different meaning without losing their raw energy. Although this is a celtic string ensemble, it is nothing like a chamber orchestra where things tend to drag some. This is 3 professional musicians who specialize in international music, and keep the tunes as pure as possible. "Sean Ryan's," and "Chief O'Neill's Favourite" are also popular tunes that the seasoned celtic listener will recognize. All in all, this is a magnificent recording, and I encourage you to not only buy this CD, but Bullock's and Kolodner's solo efforts as well. You will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars three great musicians...one great disc.......2000-11-11

This is a first rate recording by an excellent collection of musicians. The tunes vary greatly: from the rollicking sound of the set of reels and rants on the first track to the hauntingly spare and introspective "The Rolling Wave." Robin Bullock, Ken Kolodner and Laura Risk are each excellent musicians in their own right. Together on this recording they are magically enchanting. Mrs. Risk is one of the greatest fiddle players I've ever had the privilege of hearing. Her disc with Jacqueline Schwab (Celtic Dialogue) is a favorite of mine. This disc is just as impressive and fun to listen to. The track titled "First Light in the Mountains/The Open Road" is by itself more than worth the price of this disc. By the way...I also want to recommend Ken Kolodner's wonderful album "Walking Stones"--it is great too. This disc gets a high recommendation from me. I hope that you'll get a copy if you have the chance. There's plenty of great music here.

While at first wary of an all-string recording, I was quickly put at ease. The skill of the players and the mix of the instruments (guitar, cittern, piano, dulcimer, fiddle, and viola) makes listening to this recording rewarding. Many of Greenfire's tunes, particularly "The Cape Breton Fiddlers' Welcome to Shetland" and "Over the Moor to Maggie" are on my "Fiddle Tunes to Learn" list. Get this!

5 out of 5 stars Ensemble Galilei's music is lilting, elegant and unexpected!.......2002-11-29

With their soulful playing and artful, sometimes even ephemeral arrangements, the six women of Ensemble Galilei convey a rare depth of emotion. In the insert notes, gamba player Carolyn Ann Surrick describes their creative process: "[In making this recording, we engaged in]...a kind of work that is so focused and intense that years can go by in one afternoon... Extraordinary music-making requires trust... [We] live for the times when the only thing that exists right then is the music--when the instruments are speaking as if we don't exist, and they are having their own conversation." Thank you, Ensemble Galilei, for allowing the rest of us the privilege of coming along for the ride! It's simply delectable. This chamber ensemble, featuring fiddle, harp, gamba, oboe, pipes and percussion, can also be heard on their other Telarc release, "From the Isles to the Courts", and "The Mystic and the Muse: Celebrating 600 Years of Women in Music", on the Dorian label.

    5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2001-01-22

Sheer beauty, as a lover of English music I found this to be one of the most beautiful of all Shakespearean albums. Such harmony, such subtlety, one wishes that the gentle night will never stop.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2001-01-04

Ensemble Galilei provide some excellent arrangements of English renaissance compositions. I believe that John Playford (English Dancing Master) fans will be particularly satisfied with the renditions presented here. It is very unfortunate that E.G. did not provide more arrangements from such early music sources. Some of E.G.'s own compositions seem very weak and not in the renaissance spirit of the rest of the CD. Nonetheless, this CD is highly recommmended.

5 out of 5 stars It will bring about many gentle nights.......2000-11-22

I found this album to be solid. Very sweet, but not afraid to use percussion which makes it livelier and more fun. I adore the quiet, peacefulness of the music and the flawless execution of these renaissance songs.

    5 out of 5 stars Visualizing Beauty.......2000-08-20

I recently had the good fortune to direct a performance of King Lear--the ENTIRE five acts, in a community theatre, non-profit setting. I used twenty-four fully committed non-actors, who for the love of the ideas, participated in this performance. The first and main challenge that I faced was, how do I go "behind" the words, and invoke the right emotions, etc., to give these actors the range and tools needed for an effective, powerful performance? Critical to this performance was the beauty and brilliance of this recording, which I used throughout the various scenes of the play. This helped the performers tremendously, creating the different tapestries in the mind of the Bard. In short, this work is real genius, that I was so happy that I stumbled across. I am now putting in our performance programs, along with our most heart-felt thanks to E.G., the name of the recording and I have copies from Telarc to sell at each performance!

4 out of 5 stars Kinda fun in a weird way.......2003-04-15

I call this "Robot Rock". Ghostly, distant vocals, opaque lyrics, jerky beats and clammering guitars occasionally give way to eerie instrumentals that bring to mind music from "The Twilight Zone". There are real songs, though, and some of them are actually good-favorites are the pulsing "Premonition", the instrumental "Film Theme" and the pretty closer "Scar".

5 out of 5 stars The monster has two faces.......2002-12-23

This is a very paranoid album . The first time I listened to it it freaked me out but gradually within time I began to like it .

The thing is though when you buy this album don't expect it to be some bombastic pop/rock record . This is dark, eerie and to some extent a very scary record to listen to . As one of the listeners said Veldt kinda sounds like some aquatic jungle .

Now I still find new elements to the songs even though I've owned the album for close to a year and a half now .Well this is it's second stint because the last one got so badly scratched that I could only replace it when I went on holidays in Holland( it is a rare thing for me to rebuy an album after it has been scratched but this makes it all the more worth it ) . If you listen to it on your headphones there's things that make some of the songs even more menacing than what you thought once before . All in all making it a more and more appealing album .

Listen to this if you want experimental music taken to it's most darkest of elements . If you're looking for looking for something a bit more warm however you could always try the fantastic New Gold Dream which has all of what Simple Minds would later become to be known better for ( without the bombast )

4 out of 5 stars Definitely before its time.......2002-09-08

This album deserves 4 stars from me, but I'm a fan who really, really digs it. The average listener (who is objective and receptive to this kind of music - i.e. not a die-hard Def Leppard fan) would probably assign it 3 stars. This is ground-breaking music, heavy with electronic experimentation.

The first side (or first 7 tracks) is highly experimental and therefore more challenging. Some tracks are a rather difficult listen such as the unweildy "Naked Eye." However, the opener "Real to Real" is a good song with a haunting quality and "Veldt" sounds like a stroll through a surrealistic jungle (or "field" as the title would indicate). Most of my favorite music has a "trippy" quality, and this stuff definitely qualifies.

The second side still contains plenty of electronics, but it is more easily digestable, either for it's more familiar song structures or because some of the songs rock out quite a bit more. "Premonition" steers straight ahead into strange territory, guided by a solid bass line. "Changeling" is perhaps the best song on the album. It certainly rocks the most and has positively corrosive synth and guitar figures along with a confident, loping drum beat. "Film Theme" is an evocative, lazy, hypnotic instrumental - beautiful. "Calling Your Name" is another unique sounding rocker and "Scar" is an epic sounding song that would sound great in a futuristic film. It half-way reminds me of old U2 (but I bet they would dislike the comparison).

Kerr's vocals are great as always, although they are often affected to sound wierd or cool. He's got a phenomenal voice, but it's less evident on these earlier records. If you're interested in early rock/electronic music, you can do far worse than this intriguing album.

4 out of 5 stars Takes more than a simple mind to enjoy..........2002-07-07

Let's face it: Fans of mid-80's Simple Minds stuff will more than likely NOT enjoy this album. However, fans of experimental new wave and post-punk music should give it a listen. It takes some time to grow on you but it's fairly rewarding, although most of it tends to lack the emotion of post-punk music. Indeed, a few songs fall flat, but a few are just fantastic. Uneven, but a good effort.
The album sort of comes off as a mix of Kraftwerk, Tuxedomoon, Legendary Pink Dots, Bauhaus, Devo, and Magazine, with some touches of Roxy Music, late-70's Bowie, and early XTC...but not too much like any of them individually.

3 out of 5 stars first sign of what was to come.......2002-05-03

I have been a fan of Simple Minds since the very beginning--the late great CFNY in Toronto (the best radio station ever) played "Life in a Day" and I was hooked. This album is not so great but it does signal a huge change from the uneven pop of their debut. The sound here is much more electronic, but it is also very muddy--this is not a fault of the cd but of the original masters, which were overproduced. I think the band recognized this because I seem to recall they issued live versions of a few of these tracks as b-sides a few years later. Now there are still some great songs on this album (Changeling for one) and if you like Sons and Fascination you need to check it out...but be prepared. Empires and Dance is much more fully realized--that is their first truly great record. (And Sparkle in the Rain is maybe their last)

The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.

I heard the guys at Jazzfest (New Orleans) and met them shortly after, and then HAD to go see them at Tipitina's a few months later. They are sly, funny, and musically talented in a wide range of styles. They do stuff for grownups, stuff for kids, stuff for grownups AND kids -- well, you get the idea. Tipitina's is a famous old N.O. bar and music venue - they played "Baby's Got the Car Keys" there and the place rocked! This album is more adult-oriented in theme, but you can let your kids hear it for the beautiful music. And you can listen to "Family Music Party" without kids around, as I do -- no Barney-esque saccharine in there to make an adult gag.
PS - Passed through Shreveport, LA last month around lunch time - went to Murrell's just because I'd heard the song and didn't want fast-food. It deserved having this song written about it!

This CD is a nice mix of older music & new releases from Trout Fishing in America. My favorite cuts are The Last Day of Pompeii, Baby's Got the Car Keys and The Number of that Truck. Trout is incredible in concert -- so much music for 2 guys -- but on this CD I wish they had skipped the speaking portions of the live performance (really a minor criticism). This is another solid performance from Trout Fishing in America.
