When one thinks of musicals from Hollywood's golden age, the initials MGM come almost instantly to mind. Indeed when veteran song-and-dance man George M. Cohan was negotiating a film based on his colorful life story, his first choice was Metro--until a falling out with studio chief Louis B. Mayer. But L.B.'s loss eventually became Warner Brothers'--and film history's--gain when the Burbank studio's Cohan musical became a massive, patriotic hit in the opening months of World War II. As chronicled in this vibrantly restored, first-ever complete soundtrack for the film, it was a compelling twist of fate. James Cagney turns in one of the screen's most ostensibly unlikely--and ultimately indelible--musical performances (netting him his only Best Actor Oscar ®), teaming with studio music director Roy Heindorf to update Cohan's once-quaint turn-of the-century patriotic ditties ("You're a Grand Old Flag," "Over There," "Yankee Doodle Boy") and infectious vaudevillian chestnuts ("Give My Regards to Broadway," "Harrigan") with bracing dollops of the studio's '40s orchestral sass--and, just months after Pearl Harbor, some crucial historical parallels. Also included are four bonus tracks that remarkably survived the film's preproduction, including an outtake of "You Remind Me of My Mother" and voice-and-piano-only rehearsal versions of "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "You're a Grand Old Flag" that further underscore Cagney's deceptively effortless ability to sell a song despite his limited musical gifts. It's a long overdue showcase for a true American film musical gem. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Yankee Doodle Dandy Review.......2006-11-03

It's an old movie with an old soundtrack, but I loved the movie, I love the music, and I'm very happy with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Yankee Doodle Dandy.......2006-06-30

Excellent in black and white and color. James Cagney also got a medal from a President. (President Reagan!} If you like entertainment...this is it!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing! Wonderful! Just buy it - you won't be sorry!.......2005-03-05

I am so very glad I bought this CD. I own the DVD of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and watch it all the time, so I almost didn't buy this, wondering if I really needed yet another CD.

Well, thank God I didn't pay any attention to that dumb idea!

If you love "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and Cagney, you just have to buy this soundtrack. It's like being able to take the movie with you anywhere ... it's not just the songs - as others have said - but also includes bits of Cagney's voice-overs, even the tap-dancing from the end of "Little Johnny Jones." And since the audio system in my car is better than my TV's, it all seemed even bigger, richer and better. (George M. would love that!)

Wonderful, wonderful stuff!

5 out of 5 stars What a find!!.......2003-06-15

I haven't been able to see this movie on TV since Turner bought it (don't get TCM), but if you've seen the movie several tims, as I have, listening to this CD is very nearly as good as watching it all the way through. (I'm so delighted with it that I'm even willing to forgive TCM for putting a paper ad inside with the disc.)

Monumental effort must have gone into this soundtrack, given the age of the original recordings. The tracks here are crisp, clear, and bright, with no evidence of how long ago they were first put down. The editors were also generous in their inclusion of dialogue that ties some of the tracks together (for example, we hear the man tell Johny Jones to watch for the skyrocket, then we hear the skyrocket as it leads into "Give My Regards to Broadway"). There are a couple of places where the endings are slightly abrupt but this is because, in the movie, the music fades into extended dialogue.

The only bit of dialogue I expected to hear in a song, but didn't, is in "Over There" near the very end of the film, when Cagney/Cohan has fallen in step with the soldiers going off to WWII, as they're singing "Over There", when the soldier nearest him says something like, "What's wrong, old timer, don't know the words?" and Cagney says, "Seems to me I do" and starts singing along. That's minor and pales next to how wonderful the rest of this soundtrack is.

One of the biggest treats on this CD is that we get to hear some of Cagney's tapping, notably in "Give My Regards to Broadway", "You're a Grand Old Flag", and - one of my favorite moments in movie history - when he dances down the White House stairs to "Yankee Doodle" near the end).

The outtake is not a humorous one, simply a track they decided not to use. It and the rehearsal tracks are all just the performers voices with piano accompaniment. I especially enjoyed hearing Cagney rehearsing "You're a Grand Old Flag".

If you like Cagney, if you like Cohan's music, if you like movies "the way they used to make them", or if you're not ashamed to get a little choked up with patriotism once in a while, you will not be disappointed in this CD!

5 out of 5 stars A Soundtrack Every American Should Own.......2002-09-23

Finally! If you own that Hollywood Soundstage abomination of the "Yankee Doodle Dandy" soundtrack you can finally pitch it. Here is the real article. Rhino (Turner Classic Movies Music) lovingly restored the music from the beloved "Yankee Doodle Dandy" motion picture starring James Cagney. This soundtrack sounds astonishing considering it's 60 years old. It's very obvious some loving care was taken in it's production for which we all should be greatful. The liner notes also are great with informative text and wonderful photos from the movie. The marvelous George M. Cohan songs gives one goosebumps and bring tears to the eyes. We all need this type of patriotic pep rally, especially in these tough times. As I've said, this soundtrack belongs in every American's home just as much as that "Grand Old Flag"! I believe there are plans to release the movie on DVD, hopefully soon.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of 1999 4 1/2 Mics.......2005-10-31

This album is by David Banner who now a days has a pretty good following in the south. Him and his rap partner made a Dirty South classic on this album. This album is a lot better then any of Banners solo joints MT2A being his best one in my book.
If you like David Banners music even just a little bit you will love this CD. As I said this should be seen as a Dirty Classic.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended & Different.......2005-01-26

This album is not your typical southern rap album. It consists of smart and witty lyrics. This album came out before David Banner was famous (and he is much better in this album). It has great, trippy lil' beats and is a great album for when your just cruising around town or when your just relaxing. Overall I was very impressed due to the fact that Im not a big rap fan, and even though I typically listen to more of the Beatles or the Pixies, I found this album to be especially enjoyable!!!

4 out of 5 stars The Crooked Letter State got that FIREWATER!.......1999-05-09

Coming out of Mississippi, you don't hear much from us until now. This Grey Skies album is as good as any album out of the south and even better. Out of 17 songs, at LEAST 13 are bumpin. Amongst the best are: Firewater, Get Crunk, Tupelo, Chicken, and Trill As It Gets. If you have any negetive opinions about this album, keep it 2 yoself. If you deny these boys their glory and opportunity to shine you ani't nutthin but a hater. We can look forward to these playaz to drop more and even tighter cuts. Mississippi ain't dead ya heard what I said. From Meridian to Jackson, to Biloxi and back them Mississippi playaz puttin the state on the map.

5 out of 5 stars These cats are xtra hot, hip hop legends already.......1999-05-08

Kamikazee and David Banner will and to me is the hottest lyricist in this hip hop game. Grey Skies is true knowledge. I can dig this southern masterpiece because that's how it's goin down in the south... There lyrics is doing all others in the business. I just stumbled across these cats and now I'm waiting for the video, I know it will be as positive as there message. I read about them in The Source, May issue. It really tripped me out how these cats got all these college degrees. But, the message that they're delivering there's no doubt these cats are educated to these passing times. You cats stay up on it, Peace Back-to-Back w/Big Awl....99'

5 out of 5 stars Red Garland(and Al Jolson and..)Revisited.......2006-05-01

I am a sucker for anything by Red Garland-and I love 'Red Garland
Revisited';but on 'Grey Skies',he does the Al Jolson standard
'Sonny Boy'-which is the beautiful tune-beautifully played, that I measure everything else by.Red is accompanied here by Charlie Persip on drums and Wendell Marshall on bass, rather than Arthur Taylor (d) and Miles Davis rhythm section cohort Paul Chambers (b) and this trio does some great stuff with 'St. James Infirmary','My Honey's Lovin' Arms','I Ain't Got Nobody','Baby Won't You Please Come Home','Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen' and 'My Blue Heaven'.Regardless of tempo,Red is always beautiful
to listen to.Reportedly,he once went a few rounds with Sugar Ray
Robinson-and I believe Sugar Ray learned something about how to
deal with 'time and space'-from Red. When listening to him,you can "always" hear Al Jolson say,"You ain't heard nuthin' yet",before another encore performance of 'Sonny Boy' or one of his other masterpieces.

4 out of 5 stars Typical Garland trio album.......2005-12-07

One among dozens of albums Red Garland made for Prestige, this trio session was cut in October 1962, with Wendell Marshall (b) and Charlie Persip (d). The highlight here is Red's interpretation of MY HONEY'S LOVIN' ARMS, a tune usually associated with trad bands. Done up-tempo, Red swings it nicely with just the right modern touches added to it. On SONNY BOY, the old Al Jolson tune, Red plays the verse very slowly and unaccompanied, but then things pick up somewhat when the rhythm joins in.

NOBODY KNOWS THE TROUBLE I'VE SEEN, is taken just a bit too slowly and goes on for almost 12 minutes, though Red really gets into a blues groove near the end. Red's locked-hands chordal approach is evident throughout the album (that's the sound from Red that Miles liked the most). I think Garland produced more successful albums than this one, but it's a good one just the same.

      Album Description

Over the last year, Josh One has become a recognized name amongst tastemaker DJs and music lovers around the globe. His presence has become ubiquitous in the electric electronic market since the release of Awaken the first hip-hop record released in 5.1 surround sound. The first single "Contemplation," vaulted to the top of the UK and European DJ charts with the King Britt remix that wouldn't quit. Everyone from the Masters at Work to Danny Tenaglia played it to their devotees. UK Magazine The Face named the single one of 2002's tunes of the year. The track has appeared on numerous DJ charts, mix CDs and compilations worldwide. On the heels of "Contemplation's" fire, Josh headed back into the studio to collaborate with underground favorite MCs Aloe Blacc from Emanon and Mikah9 from Freestyle Fellowship to create a new EP. As the tracks were being finished, DJs began lining up at this year's Winter Music Conference waiting to bless the new grooves. The four tracks are a prelude to teh fourthcoming Fall 2003 album, Narrow Patch, which will appear in 5.1 surround sound with visuals on DVD-Audio.

If you've bought or listened to any jazz record since the mid-1950s, you've heard the legendary bassist Ron Carter on any number of them. He's played everything from hard-bop to Brazilian music, and on this CD he delves into Latin jazz. Backed by pianist Stephen Scott, percussionist Steve Kroon, and Fourplay drummer Harvey Mason, Carter's deep bass tones move from U.S. swing to Afro-Latin tumbao patterns with ease. His renditions of "Besame Mucho" and Ray Bryant's Cubop classic "Cubano Chant" move and groove. Carter changes the syncopated citizenship of Antonio Carlos Jobim's bossa nova "Corcovado" to a Cuban bolero, and his blues "Loose Change" is a hip-swinging tune that would be at home in the ballroom and the bodega. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

4 out of 5 stars In the pocket latin jazz.......2004-04-18

This is simply relaxing, beautiful jazz in a latin framework. Not latin in a jazz mode, but the jazz here comes first, with the incomparable Ron Carter leading the way. I have loved the music Ron Carter has done. With the second Miles Davis quintet onward, Mr. Carter has played on so many sessions and added a musical quality to each. He is truly one of the jazz legends (along with such living legends as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins, Elvin Jones, and McCoy Tyner). If you get a chance to see these legends perform, enjoy them live while you can.

5 out of 5 stars jazz musicians who have mastered their roles.......2001-08-20

wow! An amazing latin-jazz record. It's on the mellow bossa side of things but the guys on this record can really play. Ron carter "leads" with logical brilliance and beauty. Stephen scott's piano phrasing is perfect. Not too busy, but very rhythmic. Harvey mason has a very interesting style. He lays back when necessary, but has a very original style. Steve kroons adds percussive colors that enhance the rhythm section. If youm like this, get "the bass and i." This is my second favorite latin jazz record only to roy haynes trio w/danilo perez and john patitucci. Buy that one, trust me.
