Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Yup, it's great.......2007-05-06

Having just acquired this album and listening to it in one (l-o-n-g) sitting, I have to agree with everything stated by other Amazon reviewers. (I didn't think too much of Jerry Hadley, though.)

One other thing that struck me was the original spoken dialogue that contains quite a few references that are NOT AT ALL "politically correct" in today's social environment. I wonder how controversial it was when EMI was putting this production together; did they consider making changes to the original dialogue? Maybe it's like Mark Twain's Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer: a classic's a classic. Still, I doubt many school music programs are using this recording as a reference demonstration of American musical theater!

5 out of 5 stars The historic set reissued at a "popular" price.......2006-10-30

In the fall of 1988, EMI made history by releasing a note-complete recording of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein's immortal musical SHOW BOAT.

Surprisingly, the original 1927 version had never been recorded complete. Those in search of the entire score were forced to assemble it themselves from a number of available recordings.

The record labels were not making full original cast albums in 1927, although a few of the original stars made singles of their hit songs. Brunswick issued an album of highlights from the 1932 revival but only 3 of the six selections were by members of the Broadway cast.

Columbia's album of the 1946 revival was closer, but limited to five 12-inch 78 it covered only nine songs and the new Overture created for the revival.

Columbia re-recorded essentially the same program for a studio cast disc headed by Barbara Cook and John Raitt.

Cook starred in the 1966 Lincoln revival, recorded by RCA Victor but again it is a fairly truncated album covering little more than the key hit songs.

It seemed strange no one tried a 2- LP set, but when the show was revived in London in 1972 the cast album for that production was issued as a single LP in England and a special 2 LP set in the U.S. Still, it did not contain the entire score.

Dozens of other SHOW BOAT discs had been issued over the years, but none of them included the complete score with the original orchestrations.

That is what made EMI's set so historic. John McGlinn conducts the most authentic reading of the score ever laid down. Two very full Cd's cover the opening night score (and quite a bit of dialogue.) A third CD includes cut songs, alternate versions and new songs added to later productions. All of this was accompanied by a very thick booklet (134 pages!) that contained essays on the reconstruction, a detailed synopsis, all the lyrics and text as included on the recording and dozens of photographs.

The album was a huge, expensive gamble that paid off handsomely: The recording went to #1 on the Billboard Classical charts, was a steady best-seller for years and then just as interest was starting to wane, a new stage production premiered to rave reviews in Toronto and then moved to Broadway where it won the Tony as Best Revival of 1995 (it was, after all, the season's best musical) and enjoyed a long run.

Now, EMI has reissued this recording at a budget price. No, you don't get the same detailed booklet but you do get the wonderful performances by Jerry Hadley, Frederica Von Stade, Teresa Stratas, Bruce Hubbard, Karla Burns, Dave Garrison, and Paige O'Hara. If I have any quibbles with this set - and I am not completely sure it even qualifies as a quibble - it is the somewhat mannered readings of some of the dialogue. On the other hand, SHOW BOAT is about a theatrical family so there's no reason why they would not play broadly when off stage as well.

In the end, it's the music that matters here and the fine performances supplemented by McGlinn's bright conducting make this an essential disc for any theatre fan's collection.

Before you declare something an antique, that is. The set is readily available in its original format, with full literature and artwork. There was room for improvement with sound balance, but ARTs are usually worse than the original! Jesus Bucket of Fried Chicken Christ, we're not that old!

5 out of 5 stars WOW this is another classic.......2004-08-16

I heard a few negative reviews about this album before i got it, saying it was garbage, with maybe one or two good songs on it. Well that's absolute crap. This album is underrated, its not esham's best work, but its still classic, and still better than 99% of the garbage put out there. Best songs are Comerica, You Still Ain't sh*t To Me, 7 Mile Rd, You And Me, 1987, You Better Ask Somebody remix, Fxck Da Fame, Detective, Gothom City, and my favorite song here Nervous. Also there are 2 songs that feature the lovely Zelah Willaims, in which she solos both of them. Gimme Ya Love, and Seems Like Yesterday are there names. Seems Like Yesterday is another one of my favorites. The other songs on the albums are good too. If you ain't into esham's older music, then you'll probably like this. Will also appeal to mainstream fans, although i don't consider this a mainstream album, but it's not as underground or dark as his earlier albums. Anyway, this album is a classic, not eshams best, but still a classic, so get this now if u havent already!

4 out of 5 stars ESHAM's first major mainstream rap album........1999-04-17

ESHAM doesnt really bring in the "wicket shxt" here but its a tight album. The best track on here has to be "Fxck Da Fame" thats just track with loads of meaning behind it, and some tight bass. This is a great album that again the REAL ESHAM fans should pick up.

5 out of 5 stars Bruce Wayne, Esham, tha Unholy, WHOEVER, this is TIGHT!!!!!!.......1999-04-08

When this was first released SO MANY people were sayin' it was wack and he sold out, so I had my doubts when I first got it. Then I put it in and heard the first track and it was Esham at his finest. Not since "KKKill The Fetus" has an album done this to me. The last track "Gothem City" is one of the tightest songs EVER. It doesn't get more wicked than that. The only down part is the 2 track by Zelah Williams, but you forget about that quick when you hear tracks like "Nervous", " F*** Da Fame", and the remix of "You Betta Ask Somebody". A MUST HAVE for anyone who loves pure underground wicked sh**. If only "Mail Dominece" would have been this tight.

5 out of 5 stars ESHAM BRINGS DA WICKETSHXT!!!.......1999-02-22

I am an ICP juggalo and had only heard Esham's shxt on ICP albums, but when I bought this album, it flipped my wig! Esham brings some wicked shxt, starting with the first track, "Comerica". If that doesn't get you off your a$$, nothing will!!! (It's time to make another million.....) "7 Mile Rd." is the next phat track, with a mad wicked beat and hardcore lyrics. A kind of soft, but equally phat track is "You And Me (and a bottle of Remy)". Bottom line is, if you are a juggalo, and want to know what real underground Detroit rap is all about, get this shxt, and bump this shxt!

5 out of 5 stars Eshams best album ever!!!.......1999-02-20

This is it, this is the album you must have if you are an Esham fan. Listen to this CD a few times and you will never want to put it down. I would give this ablum 10 stars if I could. This album is a little softer then his previous ones, but the trademark Esham beats are still there. "Comerica" is the sweetest song I've ever heard from Esham. And the list of great songs goes on after that. This is a must buy no doubt. If you dont think so ask Whas, Jonez, and Gil.

    4 out of 5 stars Good.......2006-05-29

I think this album is good, but it's just not as good as most of Esham's other albums. This album is worth getting, but it's not great or anything.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Album! one of Eshams best.......2006-04-15

Pay no mind to anyone who has anything negative to say about this great album. This album isnt a "Closed Casket" which is by far Eshams greatest, BUT he changes up his flow and beats. If anything this album is Hardcore Rap, instead of Horrorcore, or Acid Rap like KKKill The Fetus and Closed Casket.
I can truly say i enjoy almost every song on here, prolly minus the track where its just some chick singing, but even that song is good in its own right.
MUST BUY ALBUM! but only if you are familiar with his past work.
If you are a beggining Esham listener start with "Boomin" "Judgment Day vol. 1" "Closed Casket"

    4 out of 5 stars Esham's best "concept" album.......2006-01-09

This is without a doubt the best CD Esham released since the KKKill The Fetus CD, and if he had stuck with the Bruce Wayne concept better, it could have been his best ever. Since this 1997 CD, it seems like only his compilations discs are worth listening to. The crossover stuff just doesn't hit home for me. This album is so focused, and the female leads in songs like "You And Me" and "Gimme Ya Love" (lyrics especially) are some of my favorites. It rocks like a mother without sounding like the under-produced underground rap music that he'd become popular with in the early 90's. This along with "Tongues" were his last truly great efforts.

5 out of 5 stars this is some hot stuff.......2004-05-20

3 out of 5 stars I guess this stuff is Okay.......2004-05-18

Probally worth about 3 stars I got a little mad because someone dissed illmatic(I don't know wh would do that)Even thought he goes into the Cliches a little I guess he tries. But come on people you really should listen to Hip Hop music.I know people that like this and I am sorry Peetahjay I was pissed off about someone dissing Nas.Esham is okay. Not my kind of rap but I can't stand imature people sometimes and I was immature.
