Sally Potter's film tells the tale of a young Jewish girl caught up in a maelstrom of artistic, emotional, and political conflicts on the eve of the Nazi occupation of France. The Man Who Cried is set against a disparate backdrop of Paris opera houses and rich Gypsy folk music, and Potter has assembled a diverse, compelling score with the help of Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov. Opera fans should note the presence of meteoric young star Salvatore Licitra, a tenor whose performances here (which include excerpts from Puccini's Tosca, Bizet's The Pearl Fishers, and Verdi's Il Trovatore) mark his recording debut. Giving that operatic sensibility its historical and ethnic context, Golijov's delicate pieces, performed by the Kronos Quartet, serve to balance the swirling Gypsy verve of the Taraf de Haïdouks ensemble. The resulting score gleefully turns the various clichés of "world music" on their heads, revealing new connections between Euro-folk and the classics as the disc showcases traditionalists and newcomers alike, introducing a bright new operatic star in the bargain. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars The Man Who Cried.......2006-12-01

The music in this movie is so beautiful, it's almost haunting. I have watched the movie 4 times in the past 3 days and can hardly get enough of it. I was not a fan of Johnny Depp's until now. Salvatore Licitra's voice is incredibly beautiful. I can't say enough.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music--beautiful movie.......2006-11-03

Although this movie took some critical hits I was mesmerized by the music and the "silent" acting of Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci. Their eyes expressed emotion that words would have made cumbersome. But back to the music CD: The blend of Russian gypsy music (thrilling) and Italian opera (though lip-synched)was thoroughly entertaining and moving. Very enjoyable but don't expect your friends to share your enthusiasm for it...

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful movie, beautiful music.......2004-01-06

This CD features the debut recording for Salvatore Licitra who proves to be a tenor to look out for in the future. Combined with the powerful voice of Licitra, this CD contains tracks of traditional roma (gypsy) music. Rent/buy the DVD/Video, watch the movie and then buy the CD - you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars The Man Who Cried.......2002-05-02

Moving, versatile, deep and rich. Salvatore Licitra, will you marry me?

The Kronos Quartet, Iva, every artist named and unmentioned on this soundtrack will pull at your heart.

It's not necessary to have seen the movie to appreciate the soundtrack - it is as operatic as cinematic, as large as it is personal, as complex as it is simple.

This is one of the best recorded works I have heard in years, and my musical taste is broad. Spend the few dollars, add it to your collection, enrich your life, for it is short.

Christina

5 out of 5 stars A sweeping global musical landscape of love and passion..........2002-04-01

"The Man Who Cried" is one of the best soundtracks of the last few years. It is a flawless, spellbinding compilation of classical opera (Bizet, Verdi, Puccini, Purcell), Roma (Gypsy) music (Taraf de Haidouks), and original score ("Cesar's Song," "Close Your Eyes," "Without a Word." The Kronos Quartet performs the original score).

Tenor Salvatore Licitra in particular was a gem, this being his debut recording. His voice is tragically gorgeous on "E Lucevan le stelle," heroic and lighthearted on "Di quella pira," haunting on "Je crois entendre encore" (especially on the Yiddish version) and "Close Your Eyes," an achingly tender Yiddish lullaby that Suzie/Fegele's (Christina Ricci) father sings to her as a child in Russia.

Christina Ricci's singing voice is provided by Czech chanteuse Iva Bittova, whose sultry jazz stylings on "Gloomy Sunday" and childlike innocence on "Dido's Lament" combine to form a musical portrait that matches Suzie's (Christina Ricci's) screen image of a teenager teetering on the edge of adulthood, exploring her musical talent and blossoming sexuality. A pity that the final version of "Close Your Eyes" sung by Bittova wasn't included, but "The Man Who Cried" is a fantastic soundtrack that captures the tumultuous musical world of WWII Paris.

Very happy with the product - music and voice are excellent. Entire purchase was seamless. Very good indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Quality debut from a brilliant jazz singer.......2003-12-24

Stacey was born and raised in New York but moved to London and it was there that she embarked on a career as a jazz singer. Stacey is now a major name in British jazz and a new album release from her is always something to look forward to. Stacey claims Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Mildred Bailey among her influences, but her voice is more like Mildred's than the other two.

This debut album is a great showcase for Stacey's talents, with plenty of great covers of standards from the Great American Songbook, on which Stacey is backed by some of the finest musicians on the British jazz scene. Among the classics (mainly ballads) on this album are two Cole Porter songs (Dream dancing, It's de-lovely) and two co-written by Johnny Mercer (I'm old-fashioned, Day in day out), together with six other excellent songs. Stacey interprets the songs her way - superbly.

Experts will tell you that Stacey has perfected her craft with subsequent albums, but by my reckoning there really wasn't all that much room for improvement. This is a great jazz vocal album.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!! Why haven't I heard of her before ???.......2001-07-30

Sometimes you get surprised. A while ago I was in purchasing an addition to the stereo system and the salesman demo'd using a Stacey Kent CD. My jaw dropped. Instantly.

I honestly don't remember which CD, so I gambled and picked up 'Close Your Eyes'. I've heard (and own) Diana Krall and Holly Cole (both great), considered Jane Monheit (jury is still out for me), occasionally delve into the coolness of Patricia Barber, but I gotta tell ya, Stacey doesn't have to take a back seat to any of these. There is this hard-to-define "something" in her voice and approach to the song that makes one stop dead in their tracks and go "whoa". Maybe the other reviewers can identify it. I'm not sure it's something definable in print.

As for the CD, I'll admit to liking the vocalist + quartet/quintent approach used on this album more than the typical singer + trio approach. Vocally, Stacey isn't as 'whispery' a stylist as, say, Diana Krall, but I like them both quite a bit for different reasons. Diana tends to be a bit more intimate and dreamy, Stacey a bit brighter and flirty. Both excellent, but very different sounds.

Staceys' sidemen just swing the house down, especially her pianist David Newton, and although I usually am not a big tenor sax fan, I certainly am on this one, with utterly superb work from Jim Tomlinson (who reminds me strongly of Stan Getz). Add in solid drumming, rhythm guitar and bass playing from cats who can hold their own with most anybody, top it off with a shimmering, gorgeous, uniquely styled & perfectly pitched voice, and you have a winner. After a few listens, I now must say this CD goes in my "stranded on an island" collection without any doubts.

If you're a fan of the aforementioned singers, you seriously need to check this one out. Highly, highly recommended.

(Recording quality is pretty good too, very natural and unforced.)

5 out of 5 stars Viberant jazz.......2001-07-12

This album is a must have to any jazz collection. Stacey Kent has a viberant voice to bring the jazz standards back to popularity. Her soulful sound is stimulating and carries the emotion of every syllable, whether playful or romantic.

5 out of 5 stars Simply magnificent.......2000-03-28

I purchased this CD on a 1998 trip to England, having been enthralled with Ms. Kent's voice since seeing her in "Richard III". This is a wonderful collection of songs by the likes of Cole Porter and Johnny Mercer, alternating between soulful numbers like "More Than You Know" and lighter pieces like "Its Delovely". Ms. Kent handles them all with consummate skill, and is backed by a sharp ensemble including her husband, Jim Tomlinson, on saxophone, and a fine guitarist, Colin Oxley. This is beautiful music.

5 out of 5 stars The original version of When you say nothing at all.......2005-07-08

Keith Whitley's premature death in his mid-thirties means that we will never know just how great he might have been. He was an obscure singer for many years before eventually making the big time. This was his first full-length album on a major label. His next album was almost completed when he died - others put the finishing touches to it and released it posthumously - so this album was the last that Keith released in his lifetime.

The album yielded three number one country hits for Keith including the title track (a superb ballad) and I'm no stranger to the rain (an up-tempo song). Nevertheless, the most famous song of the three by far is another superb ballad, When you say nothing at all. Alison Krauss covered it for a Keith Whitley tribute album, her version later being released on her hugely successful compilation, Now that I've found you. Later, other artists covered the song including Ronan Keating, whose version made number one in the British pop charts. The versions by Alison and Ronan (and maybe some others) reached many people who have never heard any of Keith's music. Whether Keith's version of the song is the best is irrelevant although I think his version is as good as any of the other vesrions of the song. Whoever else records it, Keith's version remains the original.

Apart from the three number one country hits, there are many other excellent songs here including I never go around mirrors (a cover of the Lefty Frizzell classic), It's all coming back to me now, Lucky dog, The Birmingham turnaround and Honky tonk heart.

If you enjoy traditional country music, you will surely love Keith's music - especially this album.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest album of all-time.......2003-03-09

If you discount "Greatest Hits" and "Best of" compilations, this is the one album to own. This is the best album by the greatest singer. Classic songs such as "When You Say Nothing At All, Don't Close Your Eyes, and I'm No Stranger To The Rain, remain timeless and never get old. The ballads "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" co-written by Keith, "Would These Arms Be In Your Way" with great background vocals by Emmylou Harris, and the old Lefty Frizzel song "I Never Go Around Mirrors" are top notch slower songs. The album has great balance with up tempo numbers "Honky Tonk Heart" and "Birmingham Turnaround" being the best. I rate this album slightly higher than the follow up "I Wonder Do You Think Of Me"
mainly on the strength of the classic songs, three of the best of all time.

5 out of 5 stars "Real Country Music".......2002-09-27

Dont Close Your Eyes, this is the Album that solidified Keith Whitleys Career. When you hear the first song you can pretty much tell youve Stumbled onto something worth listening too.Flying colors is a song about a guy getting dumped by his girl, and her thinking her leaving would be the death of him. But, She gets tricked because he comes out A lot stronger man in the end and as the Song says he came through with Flying colors after losing you! meaning the girl that left him. Then we get to song number two Its all coming back to me now is a good song about a man trying to get over a girl and finding out that its not an Easy thing to do a line in the song says it all My mind cant forget what my heart wont allow its all coming back to me now. Then theres song number three Lucky dog its a kinda humorous little song about a guy finding a good girl and remembering the bad relationships he had to go through to get to her and he considers hisself A"lucky dog" Then theres song number four this song is probably The song that most remember Keith By its Called Dont close your Eyes. Its about a guy falling in love with a girl and trying to give her love unlike shes never known but,she keeps thinking of her last love and he tells her Dont close your eyes let it be me dont pretend its him in some fantasy Darling just once let yesterday go,and youll find more love than youve ever known just hold me tight when you love me tonight and Dont close your eyes.I think you get the message! Then theres a song after this called the Birmingham turnaround, its about a guy,and his girl having a lovers spat and him driving off and trying to forget her but, he turns around and heads back to her Great song! Then theres Some ol" side road now this song truly showcases Keiths vocal abilities to a t.I cant put this song in words i can just say youve got to hear Keith on this song if you really want to capture how vocally talented he was! After hearing some ol side road he tones it down a notch with a moving love song Called would these arms be in your way.Its Basically a song where a guys is asking the girl he loves Honey would these arms be in your way,and extending to her an invitation for love. Then theres another Great song Keiths well known for No stranger to the rain .I personally think he chose this song because it was his life story put to music he was no stranger to the rain, and he wasnt ashamed to let the world know it either. Then if you really want to hear Keith sing Country music like only he could then i never go around mirrors is the song to hear. This too is another song i think he chose because it pertained to something he dealt with himself. He does this song so well that after hearing him sing it and put his whole heart ,and soul in it you dont cry with him you aint got no heart!!! He makes you feel the pain he is singing about. Then on a little bit happier note we go back to another love song when you say nothing at all.Its just a song about a guy telling his girl you dont have to say you love me i can see it in your smile, and the look on your face when i am with you.Another very good whitley sang song indeed! Then we return to another breaking up song a day in the life of a fool i cant spoil it for you i can just say i think you will really like the song a lot .Then the very last song is a honky tonk song to a t .Its a song about a guy loving the honky tonk life and realizing that it cost him his girl.Over all this whole album is a ten in my opinion not,a bad song on it.If you dont own this one then your really missing out on some Real good country music sang by the one,and only Keith Whitley ,there will never be anyone to fill his shoes he is truly missed but, his music lives on!!!Keith died may the 9th 1989 of an accidential alcohol overdose he was at the top of his game one can only imagine just how things would be if he were still here, and making music!!!!!! I think He would be a hard act to follow!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars guaranteed to leave Haggard in the dust!.......1999-11-03

The Comedy Harmonists were an a close harmony group who recorded in Germany from '28 to the late '30's. They were harassed and force to disband because of Nazi disapproval of their semitic origins as well as their avant-guarde, jazz-oriented material. They sing here in German and English doing everything from folk songs to Tea for Two with clarity, musical grace and lightness. Their comic songs are very deft and witty. If you enjoy close harmonics, you will find this recording a revelation.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Art, and Melodic Beauty, and it was just a demo........2003-04-28

Kurt Elling is the new Golden Boy of Jazz Singing. I wrote a review of this side about four or five years ago on amazon.com, and while allot of what I said in favor of Kurt Elling's music still holds true, I have much to correct due to newness to the jazz scene when I first reviewed the record. First things first. For those who have said that Elling has not measured up to Mark Murphy should check out ... where Murphy is quoted paying Elling one of the highest compliments one singer could give to another. It should be evident by, if nothing else, his repertoire. On this side alone he shows us his wide listening vocabulary and great sense of tradition as far as jazz in concerned. He sites Murphy as well as the great Jon Hendricks. Also I think it is unfair to compare Elling to Murphy, Hendricks, or anyone else for that matter. Elling is his own man. He has made his own way in jazz singing. However, he has also learned from those that have come before him. An admirable quality in an artist. This is the breakdown of his first side which was original intended to only be a demo of the music he had been making during that time.
1. Close Your Eyes. Title cut. Honestly there's not much else to say about this particular cut. It's swingin' Bop chart from the pages of Ella Fitzgerald's songbook, and it is a great choice in little known standards in which we are first introduced to the music of Kurt Elling.
2. Delores Dream. I at one time sited this as some kind of broadway chart because of something I had misread. Kurt Elling's lyric to Wayne Shorter's musical master piece Delores. This the first Vocalese lyric of Elling's we are to hear. He takes Wayne's solo and uses it as an unaccompanied introduction to the groovy melody that I just can't enough of. Many have said, and Elling was one of the first to admit this, that his scatting abilities had a long ways to go at this point, however, it is still quite enjoyable to listen to. (Check out the extended cut of this on the Live in Chicago: Out Takes cut).
3. Ballad of the Sad Young Men. It took me over two years and three recordings before I has able to snag a chart for this cut. It's written by the same songwriting duo that gave us Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most. Elling and his pianist Laurence Hobgood to a remarkable duet of this bittersweet song of squandered youth and regret.
4. Salomé, (Hide the). Yeah, I don't get the title either. Well, I do have an idea, but that's beside the point. This Hard Bop/Fusion composition of Hobgood's that amazingly enough is set to a swing. Elling pens a very groovy and imaginative lyric about obsession and desperation.
5. Married Blues. A hilarious prose set to spontaneous accompaniment. In short, what's going on in a sarcastic husband's head during some frustrated times. You simply have to hear it to understand.
6. Storyteller Experiencing Total Confusion. Elling/Hobgood piece with a poem inserted in the middle, and I think there's a quote from the Miles DAvis cut Blue In Green from Kind of Blue. It's profound and surreal. That's all there is to say without hearing it.
7. Never Say Goodbye. One of the first collaborations between Elling and Hobgood this Bossa Nova/Fusion cut about past love and that ever burning desire to one to whom you will never have to say, "Goodbye".
8. Those Clouds Are Heavy, You Dig? Now the say in the liner notes that this Dave Brubeck/Paul Desmond composition was originally titled Balcony Rock, but it was really Audrey, a song written for the the great Audrey Hepburn. Desmond was reportedly infatuated with her at the time. Kurt's Vocalese is an adaptation of the poem, "How the thimble came to be God," about how we tend to take life for granted and push aside our faith that which truly matter, but also, that there is always hope for redemption.
9. Wait Till You See Her. A great rendition of another little known standard.
10. Hurricane. Elling takes on Herbie Hancock this time, and the hip results are summed up in the song's title.
11. Now It Is Time That Gods Came Walking Out. Another spoken word piece. From the same poet from Elling's adaptation when writing his lyric to Audrey. Some people say this is paying homage to Charlie Parker's cut Now is the Time, but I don't buy it.
12. Never Never Land. Okay, who doesn't know where this song comes from? Even those like myself who never actually seen it know that it is obviously from the broadway version of Peter Pan. This showcases Elling's band's ability to to master two different grooves, moving back and forth between the two. Also Elling records his first "Rant" (melody and lyrics improvised simultaneously) in which he encourages us to explore our own potential.
13. Remembering Veronica. I want to know who this Veronica is if she can inspire a piece like this. The only time I've ever heard anything remotely close is when Bobby McFerrin and Chick Corea where doing a spot where they improvised of each other. Elling transforms his scat into a smooth high pitched horn.with the perfect Hobgood accompaniment. A perfect closing song.
Let there be no question. Whether you are hip to Elling's sound or you dig another kind of jazz singer. His authenticity is without question. He is a true Jazz Singer.

2 out of 5 stars C Minus for Effort.......2002-05-23

Mr. Elling is obviously influenced by Mark Murphy. The main difference is that Murphy is a true jazz pioneer and Kurt Elling is all imitation. This is one of the most pretentious, affected recordings I have ever heard.

Another difference: Murphy can sing in tune. Am I the only person who hears how bad Kurt Elling's intonation is? SQWAWK! I hear not ONE song where he stays entirely on pitch!

5 out of 5 stars can you believe this is his debut!?!?!.......2001-06-03

kurt elling is amazing. his creative, and intriging voice knows no boundries. his band is great too. paul wertico's drumming on this cd is just AWESOME!!!! it complements the music so much. this is a great one to get, all the selections are perfect. i dont know what else to say, this is a perfect cd to get for your collection.

4 out of 5 stars His first work.......2000-08-06

Being Kurt's first CD, it's bound to be a valiant attempt; at the same time, not quite as strong as the albums that proceed it. Given, he is perhaps the best male vocalist jazz has to offer today, we all have to start somewhere. His musicality here never suffers, along with his tone, articulation, creativity, and feeling. The only place that seems to be lacking is his scatting, though between this and his second CD, it is apparent he made leaps and bounds in that area. His rants are top-notch, ballads moving, and swingers jumping. All in all this is a superb CD.

Album Description

When Susan's Room lead singer/vocal coach Susan Anders' friend Sukie had her baby Emma, Susan wanted to give her something more than some cool clothes from Baby Gap. So she went into the studio and recorded a CD of songs they had loved when they were growing up in the sixties and seventies: songs from the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, and James Taylor, among others. She did them all in lullaby style so Sukie could play it when Emma was going down for a nap: everything is either guitar/vocal or piano/vocal, and vocals and instruments were sung and played very softly so there were no sudden loud sounds that might wake Emma up.

Sukie loved the CD, Emma seemed to like it too, so Susan started giving copies to her other friends with babies. Everyone loved it and wanted more copies for their friends, and eventually she decided to offer it to the world of newborns and their parents.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent vocals and instuments.......2006-12-15

Long time fan of James Taylor, but was not familiar with "You can close your eyes". This rendition is superb. The vocals are in your room.
Sounds great in my car and home audiophile system.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful gift.......2006-01-10

I have been giving this CD to every new parent I know-they all report back that they love it because it has songs they really like, plus they say it really seems to help their baby fall asleep. I love Susan's voice, too.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars extremely poor re-mastering.......2004-12-21

I listen to many (re-mastered) historical recordings. Jeanette MacDonald is certainly one of my most favorite sopranos. For some reason, I haven't been able to find a decent, or even acceptable, re-mastering of her recordings.

While this one certainly contains many valuable tracks, the re-mastering is horrid. The songs sound stripped yet still maintain a great deal of distracting noise. I conjecture that the re-mastering was done simply by increasing the bass and decreasing the treble.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent CD!.......2004-03-29

This is an excellent collection of the Screen Sweethearts of the 30's, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, *not* singing together, in the 40's (except for a few of Jeanette's songs).

For Jeanette, it has numbers from Up In Central Park: Carousel in the Park, It Doesn't Cost You Anything to Dream, Close as Pages in a Book, Fireman's Bride, The Big Back Yard, When You Walk in the Room. She and Robert Merrill sing these together and on their own, and very charmingly, too. There are also Love Me Tonight, Isn't It Romantic, and Beyond the Blue Horizon.

For Nelson, he sings music from The Student Prince with Rise Stevens: Golden Days, Drinking Song, Deep in my Heart Dear, Serenade (which is BEAUTIFUL!), Just We Two, and Come Boys. He also sings all the songs from Northwest Outpost - thankfully, without Ilona Massey! Also, the Willie the Whale segment from Make Mine Music is on this CD - just as it is in the movie, with the narration and everything - it's great! (The Tristan und Isolde part is not included, however - not sure what the reasoning is behind that.) He also sings a duet with Jane Powell - Why Do I Love You? from Show Boat.

I say this is a must for fans of Nelson and/or Jeanette, not to mention Rise Stevens!

I particularly enjoy "When You Walk in the Room". It's a charming little tune, with ridiculous but adorable lyrics! "Fireman's Bride" is very funny also - Jeanette barely sounds like herself!

I hope this will help others to choose this CD - it's a pity there's not a list of the titles here!

4 out of 5 stars Nelson Eddy on CD - always a pleasure.......1998-08-30

It's always a pleasure to find Nelson Eddy's wonderful voice on CD and this one has some of the harder-to-find pieces in it, including collaborations with Jane Powell and the wonderful mezzo Rise Stevens. The recording of "The Whale Who Sang at the Met" is a must for any collector as are the excellent recordings (better than on the movie) for "Northwest Outpost". The baritone singing opposite Jeanette MacDonald also has an excellent voice (though his name temporarily escapes me)

This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music for your new baby.......2007-01-09

This is the most special music. When I brought my first child home from the hospital I played it as I rocked her all night. The songs really touched me. Now she's 3 and she insists on this music every night.

4 out of 5 stars Over and over..........2005-09-18

This is my second CD. I got one as a gift. I play it every night for both of my little ones. I played it so much I think we kind of wore out the first. The songs are very pleasant and it has just kind of stuck as one of our routine things.

5 out of 5 stars The best CD for new mom & baby.......2005-08-08

After buying over 5 lullaby albums while I was pregnant - this album was a gift given to me just after my daughter was born. The albums I bought were sold at a garage sale - I didn't need them after hearing this one! Now that my daughter no longer needs the music to sooth her - I play it once in a while and my eyes fill with tears! The songs express exactly the love a new mom has for her newborn baby....and now I give it as a gift to my friends having babies.
