On their fourth full-length studio release, Ozomatli serve up a rhythmically seething musical mélange that serves as virtual mirror to the dizzying cultural contradictions at the heart of their Los Angeles hometown, wrapping it in a studio-polished veneer (largely courtesy of Santana/Ricky Martin producer KC Porter) that only underscores their intriguing reflections. They wear their civic pride as badge of honor on the gritty "City of Angels," a hip-hop-funk-fusion anthem that courses straight from the street to the stars. The joyous "La Temperatura," a tribute to the city's pro-immigrant marches of '06, picks up the local thread and weaves it into the band's longstanding social conscience, one they focus on Washington's inept response to Hurricane Katrina via the savory, N'Awlinz-meets-Norwalk swagger of "Magnolia Soul." The title track hints at a few conquered personal demons, while the sultry, Los Lobos-esque Spanish ballad "Violeta," the infectious 80s-ska-funk-meets-00s-punk-pop of "When I Close My Eyes," and the hip-hop-jarocho stew "La Segundo Mano" (featuring Queztal's Martha Gonzales on vocals) stand as vibrantly disparate testaments to the band's true range of pan-cultural musical fervor and accomplishments. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars This is more mainstream than earlier Ozo.......2007-07-01

Which may be why some listeners object. "Dragon's" good and it may be their entree into more acknowledgement. "Street Signs" is probably my favorite of their CDs and more indicative of their work, but this is still a great melange of a lot of different styles and worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars Actually, 4.5 stars!.......2007-06-19

Truth is, I barely liked this disk after the first listen. I thought the guys had "sold out" and made a disk that was too pop-ish, slick and lightweight. But then I played it a few more times and, DAMN, these songs are stuck firmly in my head. I still think Street Signs had three songs better than everything on this disk, but overall I have come to thoroughly enjoy Dragon for what it is... different, fun and very energetic. Ozo is one of the coolest bands around and if this disk draws in some new fans to mix with us old ones (I discovered them in 2005), then I'm OK with the "selling out".

NOTE: If you want to buy their very best, get Ozo's Live at the Filmore set!!!! That one earns 5.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Ecclectic Mix.......2007-06-12

Compared to the rest of the music Ozo has put out this is probably their most solid integration of various types of music. With a lot more Asian influence on this album I think they hit the nail on the head. Most of the songs get your foot tapping and the lyrics in English are quite profound. Highly recommended! It has been in my CD player since I bought it last month!

5 out of 5 stars Expanding their musical scope........2007-06-10

Their usual high energy with another "take" on the avenue of employing rap technique that helps someone who is 60 (which I am) appreciate one style of rap as a valid form of musical expression.

2 out of 5 stars Slouching toward pop - disappointing.......2007-06-06

I have been a big fan of Ozomatli since their first CD. I rave about them to all who will listen as most people who love this band do. This CD is indeed the turning point toward pop for this band. There are shades of the old band in some of the songs like La Gallina, or Violeta but most of the stuff is empty. It is like a band trying to cover Ozomatli songs. I am sure that most fans will give this a try in spite of the negative reviews, but for our sake guys don't do this again.

Multiculti Los Angeles-based 10-piece Ozomatli is more than the sum of their parts: hip-hop, salsa, and funk crash head-on in this surprisingly natural collaboration. Their self-titled debut makes Ozomatli sound like one of the world's great live shows--a party band with a brain--and they pull it off deftly. Rapper Chali 2na ("Charlie Tuna," get it?) has an authoritative voice and a way with words, mixing references from Edie Brickell to Ed McMahon; just he and the Cut Chemist (both of Jurassic 5), who lends his turntable skills to the proceedings, would make for an entertaining album. But it's the way that the two--when they're even featured--build on and blend into the grooves of the wah-pedal-and-brass-section-powered ensemble that sets Ozomatli apart. Danceable and engaging, they've made a promising debut. --Randy Silver

This was a great CD with much to offer. Just recently became a fan of Ozo through a friend and now will continue my collections with them.

5 out of 5 stars East Coast.......2004-08-20

My friend from Cali introduced me to this band and I immedately loved them. From start to finish it is a great album, to the point where I bought all of their cds. Definately new and original.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Astounding.......2004-03-12

This is one of the best Latino cd's I am proud to play in my rotation 6 years after the album was released. I first heard Ozomatli when they opened for Santana in Montreal and I was like woah! I was on my feet dancing throughout their opener. They were so pumped and hyped that no matter what mood you are in they just get you in this partying and dancing mood that you cannot resist. If you are the kind of person who loves those smooth Latino beats blended with a bit of everything for an ultimate summer driving cd be sure to pick this up!!!

5 out of 5 stars Such a refreshing change.......2003-10-06

As a fan of J-5, the release of this album made sense, in that Jurassic 5 make a point of putting their music first and image last. Ten piece band 'Ozomatli' seem to work perfectly in tandem with Chali 2na an Cut Chemist, blending all of their styles so well that it sounds as if this is how hiphop should be- a fusion of a wide variety of styles. When this album came out, i would listen to it over and over again, and because of the albums' diversity, it never felt tiresome. It is very difficult to put into words how successful this collaboration is, buy it and you will understand. For those who dont want to buy it, download track such as:
cut chemist suite, o le le and cumbia de los muertos

You generally don't have to listen too hard to hear what's on the mind of Los Angeles music collective Ozomatli. The multi-faceted band is rarely subtle in its politics or its incorporation of countless Latin traditions as well as modern rock, jazz, pop and hip-hop. But on the band's third album, Street Signs, the addition of the Prague Symphony and the distinct influence of Arab and North African music certainly qualify as ambitious curve balls. Announcing its intentions from the get-go, album-opener "Believe" starts with a Rai-style vocal melody before finishing with a gritty rap as Bollywood-style strings provide a sweeping backdrop throughout. Never lingering in one place for long, the band quickly goes from there into some of the catchiest Latin Rock this side of Santana's "Smooth" on such gems as "Love And Hope" and "(Who Discovered) America?" before tearing off in other directions. These fearless hip-hop bambinos truly go their own way, saying what they want, playing what they want. --Tad Hendrickson

Every song is fabulous and I feel instantaneously cooler just listening to it. I can't get enough of the feel good, latin/jazz/hip hop/middle eastern music vibes. Join the party and prepare to get your groove on!

5 out of 5 stars The Soundtrack of LA.......2007-02-05

Drawing on influences from all over the globe, Ozo continues to amaze. I heard the track Believe on the local Pacifica affiliate right after a horrifying dispatch from Iraq. It was chilling--and the song has had a profound association for me ever since. Ozo truly represents the best that LA has to offer celebrating diversity and challenging the status quo. Ozo = LA.

2 out of 5 stars Eh.......2007-01-10

I took a chance on this one because Amazon recommended it based upon other purchases of mine.

Not a winner for me. One or two cuts were pretty good, but overall this is one I rarely play. Not very inventive. Not much drive. Not of much interest.

3 out of 5 stars Music is good, but I will not spend a cent more for any more.......2007-01-08

I dig the music, that is, when I can play it...

...discovered that this CD is encumbered with DRM. It caused iTunes to crash and it wouldn't let me import the CD... ...I listen to all my music mostly on machines in home/work or on my iPod on the go/in the car... ...what a waste of money on a "gimped" CD... ...and I won't spend any more money on Ozomatli CDs, that's for sure.

5 out of 5 stars I have to say I'm not a rap or hip-hop fan.......2006-11-06

So don't be worried about getting this album if you are in the, um, over 35 generation and "hate rap" - that's me and I thought every song on this album was great! A guy I worked with in Texas recommended this band after hearing some of my CD mixes at work (probably b/c I like Mana). I happened to see Ozomatli live here in Kauai and they give the best concert I have ever seen (sorry about that Bruce (Springsteen) and Tom (Petty) who are the two who used to hold that honor in my pantheon).
I just got this and Live at the Fillmore which is excellent as well, although there's some overlap.
If you just like music (yes, it's like having to go to the ugh, country section, to get your Mary Chapin Carpenter and Townes van Zandt) check it out regardless of your prejudices towards "urban" music

4 out of 5 stars A must own Indeed.......2006-02-13

Ozomatli has always been touted as one of the best bands to see live. If you haven't seen ozomatli live, please make sure you mark them on your calender when they hit your town soon. You will not be dissapointed, and in fact, youll still feel good, and inspired days after the show.
The Ozomatli: Live at the Fillmore DVD does a great job of capturing this highly talented band as best as can be done, without actually being there dancing, sweating and laughing in person. From the beautiful spanish style accoustic guitar by Raul Pacheco to the silly erotic dancing of "Sheff" the band's trombone player. These musicians are all so deeply talented and they have so much fun doing what they do. The audio cd has tracks that are not show on the dvd, thats the only reason I didn't give this cd/dvd combo 5 stars.

The dvd also has cool behind the scene features of the band in their tour bus sharing laughs and ripping on each other. I hear they're recording a new record currently so their touring may come to a pause soon. Either way, this is one DVD/CD every concert lover should own. This band Rocks!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing live record!.......2006-01-19

I've had the pleasure of seeing Ozomatli live twice now, and at the second show I picked up their Coming Up EP, which while very nice it didn't hold my attention for long. Just wasn't ready for their sound I suppose. Fast forward a few years later and I run across this CD/DVD collection and remembering how impressed I was by their live performances I picked it up.
All in all this live record has made me come around completely and I can't wait to pick up the rest of their catologue. The intensity and energy these musicians put forth just goes through the roof and it really does come across well on the CD. I'm not sure exactly why but both the DVD and CD have slightly different setlists (perhaps from two different nights at the Fillmore?), but it gives a nice change to the two mediums. My only complaint is that my favorite song from the earlier Coming Up EP "Ya Viene El Sol" is not present. This doesn't detract much from the rest of the material present as it is all outstanding.
If you're up for a fun, eclectic, and energetic live album, I highly recommend this CD/DVD!

5 out of 5 stars mind blowing.......2006-01-01

ozomatli has captured my attention since 98'. i attempted a santana concert in el paso texas and the ticket said featuring special guest. im a huge santana and afro cuban fan but ozomatli played a better set and way better concert than santana and since then i said who are these guys (ozomatli) and have been a huge fan since and it seems to be getting better. i speak from experience when i say these guys live are like watching pure magic. the way these guys are going i cant wait to here their next studio album.

This band is amazing. I caught the end of their live set - by accident - arriving to see the Neville Bros at a free festival in Detroit. WOW! I bought their latest studio release and was very impressed. Then, I found out about the Live at Fillmore disk and I'm nuts about it. The CD version has been worn out in my car and the DVD is being passed arround to turn others on to this fantasic band. They somehow make their gumbo of latin, rock and hip-hop sound like it was easy.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

The follow-up to Ozomatli's 1998 eponymous debut, Embrace the Chaos builds on the band's proven strengths: a masterful command of a palette of musical styles, a firm commitment to social activism, and an unending devotion to the power of rhythm. Like the L.A. landscape from which the group emerged, Ozo's music is a polyglot of cultures, whether it's the Puerto Rican salsa of "Dos Cosas Ciertas," the Mardi Gras funk of "1, 2, 3, 4," the Brazilian batucada beat of "Suenos en Realidad," or the Cuban son influence on "Timido." The result is a gorgeously diverse sound that changes from song to song without seeming disjointed or random. Rap fans may be disappointed to note that Jurassic 5's Chali 2na and Cut Chemist are no longer with the group, but the album is hardly suffering from a dearth of hip-hop; in-house rapper Kanetic Source and DJ Spinobi offer their talents, while notable cameos are provided by De La Soul ("1, 2, 3, 4"), Medusa ("Vocal Artillery"), and Common ("Embrace the Chaos"). Even though the album is capped at an efficient 11 songs, it doesn't come up short. With so much different music represented, Embrace the Chaos is like a dozen albums fused into one. --Oliver Wang

4 out of 5 stars The aztec God of dance.......2006-04-05

2 out of 5 stars I can't get behind this.......2005-07-15

English speaker here, somewhat fan of latin music.

A friend of mine saw these folks live and recommended that I go out and buy everything they own right this second.

As far as latin music goes, there's nothing special about this album. It sounds like every other salsa record out there. BOOORRRRIIINNNGG!!! Oro Solido was doing this 10 years ago. Who cares???

There are some hip hop tracks on this album, and let me save you some time: If you like the crap hip-hop that ozo is trying to peddle on this album, go out and get yourself some black eyed peas. these clowns can't rap to save themselves! It's almost unlistenable. God. I have it playing now, and someone on the album actally rhymed 'half-assed MC's' with something equally as cliched and self important, and, well, crappy. I'm gagging on this album.

I'm gonna give their self titled album a shot, it seems to be rather well liked by the amazon reviewers.

5 out of 5 stars Baltimore Hons rocks to Ozomatli.......2004-05-04

I have been listening to this CD everyday for a year! Just saw them in concert April 27 04 and they were fantastic. They jumped into the crowd and played right next to us for the last 30 min. Very rarely do you hear a group who's live performance is exactly the quality of the CD. You won't need to understand Spanish to groove to the heated explicit lyrics. Even a gringa can learn rhythm with this CD. Ozomatli played some songs from the new CD being released in June. I was on line today to see if i could pre-order it.

5 out of 5 stars Ozomatli excels! online concert, too..........2002-08-16

This album is fantastic. This group is excellent. You know this album rocks, so here is a tip! They recently played a really small, initimate concert at The Expression Center for New Media in the Bay Area and it is online ...
I love Ozo and if you do, too, you'll be stoked on this.

5 out of 5 stars Maximum Surprise.......2002-06-08

Having seen this group on the Latin Grammy awards perform "Dos Cosas Ciertas" and knowing nothing else about them, I bought the CD. I was very surprised to hear two of my favorite hip-hop artists on some tracks, especially the title track performed with Common! I love groups like Ozomatli and Groove Collective for their efforts at fusion. Their melange of latin and hip-hop and jazz reflects the diversity of urban America today. What Ozomatli should do now is carry their social activism further in their music. Play very loud!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars quite amazing.......2004-06-08

ozomatli works with a variety of styles and sounds and talents and it creates...wow. live they have enough energy to pull in even someone who hates latin and or rap and hip hop. they draw the crowd in and preform to max. fully corordinated dance on stage well playing instuments is very impressive. often times when a band is great live you will buy their cd to find that it is not as great as you thought. not so with ozomatli, the cd is something i have listened to over and over again. they sing about actual issues, which you dont see so much in main stream music these days, and they are increadibly proficiant at their instruments. the sax/clarinet/obo player is increadible, to be able to go that high on a clarinet would have to take a life time of learning.

5 out of 5 stars A teaser for great things to come.......2004-02-06

Ozomatli is undoubtedly an incredible live act with enough energy onstage to light up a large city. Their blend of musical sounds (hip-hop, funk, rock, folklorico, norteno, etc. etc.) is really unique, and the passion they have in their singing is indisputable. So, with that, they released this brilliant 6-song EP as a follow up to their outstanding "Embrace the Chaos." The CD grabs your attention from the very beginning, with "Pensando En Mi Vida", which has a classic Ozo sound. "Let Me Dream" is somewhat of an anomaly, as its entirely sung in English, yet somehow it works (it takes some getting used if you're a longtime Ozo listener). It's got a smooth groove to it, and the vocals work, unlike many other Spanish-singing bands trying to break into the English-speaking market. "Esa Morena" is a great song to dance to with a beautiful girl at your side, and "Ya Viene El Sol" is bound to become a classic Ozo song. I saw the band perform this track live at a packed show at the Fillmore in Dec. '03 and it was incredible, and remarkably, the CD version doesn't lack any of that energy. This EP is by far the best buy for the price of most releases I've seen out today. Each and every song is a winner (another rarity). Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great Live Band.......2004-01-02

I've seen Ozomatli in concert several times and they always put on an awesome show! If they're ever in your town, go see them! Great energy! Great tunes!

5 out of 5 stars Truly, Coming Up.......2003-12-30

I've had the pleasure of watching Ozomatli grow from gigs within LA. To have them create an awesome CD in 1998, then to go on and inflate their gift with a second album, and develop exposure in film and tours is wonderful. Their current CD, "Coming Up," has 6 songs - 5 new and 1 remixed has lifted their talent range to a new height. Many artists, talented or not, tend to lag or shift drastically when creating "new" albums and Ozomatli is just one of those groups that has it. The energy, the instrumental vibe, and intelligent lyrics, truly is genius. I recently saw their concert (again) they took my breath away. My advice, make a wise investment and purchase this CD and their past two CDs for yourself and someone you know.

5 out of 5 stars worth the wait.......2003-09-25

After a more than two-year lag since releasing Embrace the Chaos, Ozomatli does not disappoint with the release of their new EP Coming Up. Ya Viene El Sol is one of their strongest songs ever, and the eclectic union of sounds that is Ozo is exemplified in this song but omnipresent on the CD. Let Me Dream, their first non-rap song entirely in English, is a hooky pop-oriented song that was stuck in my head after the first listen. At first, it didn't seem quite right, but, after a couple of listens, I think it's just one more new direction for the Ozo sound. It's a great listen at a great price. Old fans will be thrilled to have some new music by one of their faves and new fans will wonder why they aren't old fans.

    Album Description

On the surface, nothing's changed. There's the same core line-up, the same oppositional politics, the same live shows that erupt into drum-line blessed community parties, and the same devotion to polyglot urban sound clashing. But here's what's new: after 12 years of collaborative song-writing, 12 years of constant touring everywhere from Denver to Tokyo to Sydney, 12 years of supporting anti-war mobilizations and global human rights movements, 12 years of pioneering Spanish-English mash-ups of hip hop, salsa, cumbia, dub, and Middle Eastern funk, and most importantly, 12 years of facing up to internal battles and personal struggles, they've emerged anew with their fourth full-length studio album, Don't Mess With The Dragon, the band's most cohesive, polished, and joyous record to date. Don't Mess With The Dragon was written and recorded with a firm commitment to collective creation. They began writing and experimenting with songs in informal sessions in the fall of 2005 at a local Los Angeles Latino art gallery, Tropico de Nopal. Then came recording sessions in the legendary Fantasy studios in Northern California, followed by sessions at a slew of prime LA recording houses. Much of the band's renewed sense of musical collaboration comes from their relationship with their label, venerable jazz and Latin stalwarts Concord Records. Don't Mess With The Dragon is Ozo's second full length, studio offering for Concord their longest stay with a single label.

What a great CD!!! Ozo is never stale.
I love the new cuts. If you never seen them live you are missing out!

    5 out of 5 stars Party in a Box!!.......2007-04-07

Fantastic album for those who love versatile, talented, uplifting performances!! There's not a band on Earth who can seamlessly stretch themselves from genre to genre without skipping a beat. Not only the best live show on Earth, but easily make you feel like you've experienced five different bands at the same time. A humble group of guys put forth a humbling effort once again!! Ozoheads rejoice!
