Within the Nashville of the early 1970s, Charlie Rich's talent was a given. His blues-drenched vocals, jazzy piano work, and moody intimacy reflected a raw integrity that no one could sell to the mainstream. That changed in 1973, when the singles "Behind Closed Doors" and "The Most Beautiful Girl" made him a household name, as did this album. But at that time, many longtime fans viewed the "new" Charlie Rich warily; their fear was that mass success came at a cost. The songs were undeniably more commercial, and his Epic producer Billy Sherrill shifted his sound to one clearly aimed at a broader audience. However, in 2001, the arguments and concerns seem moot. By and large, this music holds up, particularly compared to many of Rich's later, less substantive lightweight efforts. "I Take It On Home," for example, is as fine and funky a number as anything he recorded. Moreover, this excellent reissue highlights the contrasts in the Epic years by appending four pre-"Closed Doors" tracks, among them the magnificent "Ruby, You're Warm" and the majestic honky-tonker "Mama, Take Me Home." I enjoyed this album so much in the '70s. I was afraid the CD wouldn't be enhanced, but the quality of the sound is terrific. I enjoy it just as much now as I did 30 years ago.

Got this last Christmas, A well written and great sounding album..An all time classic. I remember hearing this growing up. If your a fan of classic country..you need this album. Oh, and too D.V. Lindner on his review of this album..You got too much time on your hands boy.

Charlie Rich was a hugely talented singer-pianist who, for whatever reason, never really fulfilled his potential. His career began in the fifties on Sun records in the early days of rock'n'roll. Charlie also recorded jazz and I suspect that he really wanted to sing but it was in country music that Charlie became successful for a brief period in the seventies.

This album, as originally released in 1973, spawned two major international pop hits - Behind close doors and The most beautiful girl. It also included other classic songs such as We lover each other (a minor UK pop hit), I take it on home (his first significant hit on the country charts, preceding the big two), Peace on you, Sunday kind of woman, Till I can't take it anymore and If you wouldn't be my lady.

Although Charlie recorded some other good songs and had further success on the country charts, he was never comfortable with country music and he never came close to matching this album for its overall quality and eventually faded into obscurity, eventually dying in 1995 of complications caused by a blood clot in one of his lungs..

This album, now re-mastered with extra but unnecessary tracks, remains the ultimate Charlie Rich album and shows just what a great singer he was at his best.

I foundly remember hearing "Behind Closed Doors" and "The Most Beautiful Women in the World" and wondering out loud sometimes "Why is my mom playing this?" Well soon I realized why...the Silver Fox was a damn good singer and his songs had a profound meaning. Living in South Central Los Angeles it was rare to hear this type of music playing or played, but my mom played it and she played it often enough that I would go to school singing "The Most Beautiful Women in the World". Now 20 odd years later I play this for my kids and they appreciate the music and his voice just like I did.

Let's get right to the point..Do you like Led Zeppelin/Bad Company/Whitesnake and/or Journey?Because this was a (recently disbanded)British band that could EASILY have been JUST as popular as the above mentioned groups! Here again Tommy wright III comes out hard! This Cd is one of the best underground cds put to gether Tommy set up the sence with realy beats and realy lyrics. This cd is not for everybody its for underground fans respect for the music and what it does. This cd will be bumped in your ride and everbody will look at you cuz these ... is so hard hitting ! But get this cd you wont be un happy! Street smart for life!

Tommy wright comes out hard with this new tracks, a double cd that is was worth the wait .These underground takes are Hard hitting beats with lyrics that are not for tha Manistream rap Group.This cd is much better then the the other due to better music and using better machines to make the music before they had some truoble with making it sound right due to money porblems. Tommy wright is not on the cd as much as i want but the other raps rip it up. Get this cd its hard underground rap with a twist. You will find yourself bumbin down tha street and everbody will just gaze at you from the hard hitting bass and tight lyrics. Pick junt up!!

The album is built around Rich's soulful singing and the dynamic and purposeful arrangements of producer Billy Sherrill. "Take It on Home" is typical: we begin with just Rich's deep, smoky voice, his own piano, and a barely audible drum tap. Soon, though, strings enter, climbing slowly, slowly, to an impassioned crescendo, then falling away entirely to underscore the declaration of fidelity that is the song's point: "I take it on home because I believe she'd do the same for me."       4 out of 5 stars Secret Affair's Mod Departure.......2001-08-15

      Behind Closed Door's was Ian Page's way of escaping the Mod Bandwagon, and with this album he successfully does so. Though the piano-bangin' intro to What Did You Expect may seem a little pompous and Who-ish, the rest of the album justifies such extravagance. Much more somber then Glory Boys, Behind Closed Door leaves straight Motown anthems/Mod arrogance lyrics behind and what we are left with are much more reflective, stronger lyrics and a shift in musical direction, to a sound which could only be described as Secret Affair. There's much more use of saxhophone and strings and songs such as When the Show is Over and the brilliant Life's A Movie Too illustrate what I can only describe as 'pop with class.' Songs like I'm A Bullet still showcase heavy 60s influences, but the Affair were using these more as building blocks then reference points(unlike 99% of the other New Mod bands). Sadly, this sank in the UK because of a mix of bad publicity, an awful album cover, and the reluctance of the band's yobbish following to embrace such a new sound. Shame, since this is probably the best album to come out of the entire Mod Revival.
