Moving up to a major label has hardly lifted Interpol's spirits. This is a good thing. Even with the twisted Wild Kingdom album cover and bassist Carlos Dengler's unexpected Wild West makeover, on its third studio album the black-clad New York quartet still sounds inflexibly menacing, grasping tighter than ever to its doomy post-punk influences and delving further into frontman Paul Banks's emotional unrest. Everything sounds a little bigger and brighter, sure, but at their core songs like "Rest My Chemistry" and "Wrecking Ball" are heroically sinister, goaded on by prickly riffs and slow-bleeding rhythms. The group briefly jumps to life on the buzzing "Heinrich Manouver" and exhibits an unexpected dash of humor on "No I in Threesome," but it's the closing "Lighthouse" that best defines the set--a late-night lament that simply steals away into the dark. --Aidin Vaziri
Amazon.com
Our Love To Admire is at once unmistakably Interpol and undeniably new. The witty and perverse "No I In Threesome" is an upbeat ode to shaking up a staid relationship propelled by Carlos D's peerless bass melody while the tenderly observant "Pace Is the Trick" proves that the band are still the masters of the dramatic - check the painful pause right before the sinfully satisfying return of Sam's thundering drums and Daniel's ringing lead guitar. The band's impressively seductive evolution is obvious all over the record, but never more so than on tracks like "Mammoth," "Who Do You Think" and on the album's lyrical centerpiece, the ghostly "Rest My Chemistry." While Daniel is understandably proud of the song he cautions against reading too much autobiography into its lyrics. "We always leave the interpretation to the listener," he says. "I mean, you shouldn't watch a movie for the first time listening to the director's commentary!"
Our Love to Admire closes with "The Lighthouse," a funereal dirge that is among the most unexpected and memorable songs ever recorded by the band. Almost entirely percussion-free, the song is constructed around Daniel's mournful guitar and Paul's sparten lyrics. Not only is it one of their finest moments to date, it provides the album's most goose-bump inducing moment, the very same reflex shivers that make Interpol live shows such an exhilarating experience. As the very last song the band recorded for the album it was, they say, the hardest to play. The hypnotic guitar part was played on a 50-year-old guitar that had toxins on the strings, providing Daniel with a blistering and painful sensation in his fingers. The band weren't even sure the track would make it out of the studio, but once they heard Paul's remarkable vocals they were floored. The song - and the album - doesn't so much end as it bleeds to a close with a long, echoey coda filled with feedback and strings. A fittingly dramatic end to a stunning and emotional journey. Interpol is back, every bit as good as before but charged with a new spirit, a new direction, a new label and, most of all, a new confidence.

Stunning.......2007-07-25
The long expected return of Interpol topped all expectations I had. Simply the album of the year in my humble opinion. Most of the songs gives you that thrilling sensation down your spine, especially the ending of it. They have done an outstanding job and musically they have been developing through the albums. AMAZING. Our love to admire makes you feel like listening over and over again.
Not more of the same Interpol.......2007-07-24
When I heard Antics I liked it but it was just a continuation of the first album. When Our Love to Admire came out I bought it thinking "What else can these guys do?" I have my answer. OLTA is Interpol but different. They kept the Interpol sound but did different things with it, some of it more upbeat and some not. I am a satisfied customer. It gets better with every listening.
it pains me to do this..........2007-07-21
a major let down, from one of my favorites,
so close, if they would of just inched a bit closer to that edge,
and they did on a few numbers "pioneer" is great, as is "the lighthouse" and "wrecking ball",
sadly the rest ranges from average to very subpar
"threesome" "h. manuver" "chemistry" and "mammoth" are very by the numbers interpol
the remaining 4 are total clunkers...
i will go and see them on this tour, as they are great live (except at festivals and larger shows) but i will pray and hope the rebound from this
honestly, i am not trying to slag on them, but it makes me so sad i wanted this to be so good
Incredible!.......2007-07-20
All of these people who are complaining are either deaf, dumb, or both. This is a killer album, and every single song is excellent. This is a great band, and I don't care who they sound like, or who sounds like them...neither Joy Division, nor She Wants Revenge are as good of a band as Interpol. Yeah, I said it!!!
i'M AMAZED!.......2007-07-20
This is my first Interpol album, and I am amazed!!! I knew that they were verry simulur to Joy Division because that's what all of the critics and fans say...but even though they may not be the absolutel most original band in the world.......I really like what they do. This album is so beautiful, and so damm good. Good, good, good!!! I love it!!

Before Sgt. Pepper, no one seriously thought of rock music as actual art. That all changed in 1967, though, when John, Paul, George and Ringo (with "A Little Help" from their friend, producer George Martin) created an undeniable work of art which remains, after 30-plus years, one of the most influential albums of all time. From Lennon's evocative word/sound pictures (the trippy "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," the carnival-like "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite") and McCartney's music hall-styled "When I'm 64," to Harrison's Eastern-leaning "Within You Without You," and the avant-garde mini-suite, "A Day in the Life," Sgt. Pepper was a milestone for both '60s music and popular culture. --Billy Altman
Customer Reviews:
A 5-Star Album That's Substantially Overrated.......2007-07-24
SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND stands at the pinnacle of 1960s record-making, credited for ushering in the psychedelic era, opening up new production techniques, and giving rock musicians the freedom to follow their muses. Hailed upon its release as a breakthrough, an experience over an album, SGT. PEPPER spent the next twenty years ranking as the "Greatest Album Ever," and it still maintains its heavyweight status.
One of the most interesting facets of the SGT. PEPPER experience is that for a record hailed as a psychedelic landmark, it isn't all that psychedelic, at least not when compared to 1967s other flagship albums: SURREALISTIC PILLOW (Jefferson Airplane), ARE YOU EXPERIENCED (Jimi Hendrix), FOREVER CHANGES (Love), THE DOORS (self-explanatory), and THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN (Pink Floyd). SGT. PEPPER is largely the manifestation of Paul McCartney's pop inclinations matched with peerless production, its an old-fashioned entertainer's album for the rock era. Even among the more production-oriented records of the era, PET SOUNDS (The Beach Boys) and DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED (The Moody Blues), it still sounds straight forward.
One of many Beatles' masterpieces.......2007-07-23
Not my favorite Beatles album, but undoubtedly a masterpiece and one of the most influential albums of all time.
Sgt. Pepper Turns Forty.......2007-07-23
It is impossible to adequately explain to someone not around forty years ago when this album was released its importance and what it meant to so many of us. The Beatles were at their height. In the U. S., it was before the assassinations of Malcolm X, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King when all the world seemed young and everything was possible. It was more than just world class music, it was a social and cultural phenomenon. There had never been anything just quite like it before. It helped define the 1960's.
The music of course is of one cloth as each song seques into the next one. No song stands out above another although my favorite has always been "When I'm Sixy-four." It now has a poignancy that we never dreamed of in those our salad days since neither George Harrison or John Lennon lived to see sixty-four. Then there was a whole generation of men, many who grew up with the Beatles, who perished in the first wave of AIDS.
Besides the marvelous music, there is of course the artwork for the album/CD. According to the liner notes by Peter Blake, he asked the Beatles for a list of people they would want at an imaginary concert. John initially wanted to include Jesus, Ghandi and Hitler but eventually left all three off the list because of the controversy in the U. S. over his recent comment about Jesus. Some of the people who made the list were Marlene Dietrich, Shirley Temple, Marlon Brando, Bob Dylan, Dylan Thomas, Edgar Allen Poe, Tony Curtis, William Burroughs, Karl Marx, Oscar Wilde, Johnny Weismuller, Stephen Crane, Albert Einstein, and Mae West (who refused at first but eventually agreed to be included in the life-size collage.)
It is impossible to write about either popular music or the popular culture of the last half of the twentieth century without a discussion of this CD. It should be placed in a time capsule.
what can I say?.......2007-07-16
There's not much to say really, except: this is music history and anyone who claims to know anything about popular music needs to own this album.
Ridiculously overrated.......2007-07-16
Sgt. Pepper is a good, border-line great album, but it is NOWHERE NEAR Revolver (the greatest album of all time IMO), Rubber Soul, or The White Album, let alone even close to it's billing as the greatest album of all time. While Sgt. Pepper is an enjoyable album, with many good tunes, it only has one great song ("A day in The Life"), along with two average songs by The Beatles' standards ("When I'm 64" and "Within You Without You") and IMO, the two worst Beatles songs ("Good Morning Good Morning" and "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!"), which The Beatles definatley should of not included. They should have put "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" in their place. That would of made this a great album.
Don't get me wrong, each and every one of the songs I haven't already talked about on Sgt. Pepper are very good, but none of them are good enough to help "A Day in the Life" make this album live up to the hype.
Oh, and for the record, I'm not excpecting very many people to say I have a helpful review, I'm just saying what I believe.

When soul music is at its finest, a great vocalist can take you along on a journey into their sadness, loneliness, joy, and passion. When mixing that voice with horns, harmonies, and a bluesy Hammond organ, that same music can seamlessly travel across decades. Many new artists claim to accomplish that feat, but few are sincerely ageless and timeless: Corinne Bailey Rae has those qualities in spades. Rae--a newcomer out of Leeds, UK, with a gospel choir history--has created a self-titled CD that occasionally evokes the feeling of a '70s Bill Withers classic, while bringing inflections of Zero 7 and Alicia Keys to her grooves as well. Straight from track one, "Like a Star" displays a restrained soulfulness that shows her strengths through a whisper soft melody. Other standout cuts include the breakup-ache of "Till It Happens To You" and "Choux Pastry Heart," which discloses her jazz-affected timing and the level of powerful songwriting that she is capable of at her very best. In a day and age where a good voice alone can provide you with a golden ticket, it is refreshing to see that Rae has not only written or cowritten every song on her debut, she also contributes guitar, bass, keys, and percussion to the tracks. Her songs have some room to mature, but as a new recording artist in her mid-20s, so does she. Soul lovers, pass the word: this is one impressive debut. --Denise Sheppard

Album Description
This is the eponymously-titled debut album from British blues-soul sensation, Corinne Bailey-Rae. Inspired by artists such as Billie Holiday and Jill Scott, this is a recording that displays a patchwork of influences, all held together wonderfully by Rae's unique vocal stylings. Includes the singles 'Like A Star' and 'Put Your Records On'.
Album Details
Rae was Voted by BBC Subscribers as the One Artist to Watch in 2006. From the First Notes Sung on her `like a Star' EP, Rae Presented a Slice of Sublime Billie Holiday Blues Delivered with a Voice that Pins You (In the Softest but Most Persuasive of Ways) to the Wall; A Voice that Floats Effortlessly, Full of Caress, Subtlety and the Very Purest Quality. It is a Wonderful Discovery to Treasure, but it Belongs to a Young Woman Not from Somewhere Musically Exotic - Say, Mississippi Or Even Manhattan - but Just East of the M1: Leeds. Her Name is Corinne Bailey Rae, and She was Born to Do This.

This a a CD for every mood in your life.......2007-07-20
I love this cd. She sings right from her soul and it like she means her words and they are just for you. I would buy this cd all over again if I hadnt saved it on my computer. I might buy the live CD because live she is great also!
CORRINE BAILEY RAE.......2007-07-19
I FIRST HEARD THIS ALBUM AT A FRIENDS HOUSE. THEY BOUGHT IT BECAUSE OF THE SONG SHE SANG AT THE GRAMMY'S. THEY PLAYED THE CD FOR ME AND I WAS HOOKED!!! SHE HAS THE SWEETEST VOICE THAT I HAVE HEARD IN A LONG TIME. HER LYRICS ARE SO DIFFERENT, ALMOST LIKE SHE IS TALKING TO HERSELF. IT IS SO REFRESHING AND ENJOYABLE TO LISTEN TO THIS CD. I CAN'T WAIT TILL SHE RELEASES MORE. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ALBUM TO EVERYONE!!!!
A Rea of Sunshine.......2007-07-17
Yup, I punned her name, but I really do like this album. Lets cut to the chase. It is a good album, and worth spending the money on.
Why did I only give it three stars? Well, Corinne has a bit of a girlie voice for my liking. It is beautiful, but lacks a mature quality that I may have trouble growing with down the road. There is a nice mix of music, and unlike some of the other guitar strumming chicks out there, there is at least one danceable tune (thank G*-).
If you like the Lilith Fair crowd of artist then Corinne Bailey Rea is a great fit. Honestly, I hope that I'm not seeing another Tracy Chapman. Tracy's first album was good, but what has she done for me lately (I love days like this).
Kevin
sweet voiced.......2007-07-17
Corinne is so smooth in her sounds. Her songs and this album just relax you and make you feel that life is good. I wouldn't want to pin her style down to one genre such as jazz or any other- she just has her own sound. A very talented girl.

Amazon.com essential recording
The voice of Edith Piaf carries with it perhaps more national identity than that of any other recorded artist in the world. Tiny, frail, and tragic in her life, Piaf brought French identity to the rest of the world in a way that was understandable to all. Known as "the Little Sparrow" in her country, her voice was strong, bold, and passionate, even as she grew more infirm. The archetypical torch singer, she had massive popular success with songs like "Milord," "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien," and "La Vie, L'Amour," included here with 18 other classics. While this is a great compilation of some of her best material, the complete lack of enclosed notes or biographical material may frustrate those not familiar with her fascinating career. However, the work of one of the most original songbirds of all time speaks loud and clear for itself. --Derek Rath
Customer Reviews:
She said about her singing better than anyone ever would,.......2007-07-17
"For me, singing is a way of escaping. It is another world. I'm no longer on earth." When I hear her singing, I am no longer in my world, I am in the world of music, love, passion, irony and humor, breaking hearts and smiles through the tears, love found and lost forever but never in the world of regrets. She always looked the life in the eye and she regretted nothing. She was a small woman (1 m 42 cm) with the greatest, strongest, and most recognizable voice around the globe. Her voice with the "r" rolled in such manner that it would make your spine to vibrate, effortlessly takes you out of your realty to the place and time that have long gone but will be forever alive in her songs, "La vie en rose, "Milord," "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien," "C'est L'Amour (It's Love), and many more. "The Voice of the Sparrow: The Very Best of Edith Piaf" delivers the promises of its title, its 18 songs are among the best and most famous of Edith Piaf but they are just a little part of the singer's body of work which spans over almost 30 years and includes hundreds of songs, over 80 of which she had composed herself.
"The little sparrow" ,Edith Piaf sings her best hits!.......2007-06-26
This Cd has all of Edith's best known hits, sung by "the little sparrow" herself.
The re-recordings are quite excellent....well done....smooth and crisp.
The songs are well chosen and nicely arranged in sequence.
Edith`s voice sounds as good as ever in this BEST HITS Cd.
A fantastic compilation.......2007-06-23
Edith Piaf's voice is like no others. It is husky yet brash, sultry and deep. Hearing this music takes you to another place. She was a fantastic singer with a wonderful low range a great cd.
The Voice of a Sparrow at a Bargain Price!.......2007-06-03
Edith Piaf was a tragic figure with a talent of singing often painful and sometimes happy songs. In this compact disc, there are her classics like Ma Vie en Rose, Milord, Non Je Ne Regrette Rien, and others listed here. Of course, Edith Piaf is not for everybody. She is an acquired taste that unless you are fan of French music or Edith Piaf that you may not like. Piaf's life was as tragic as some of her songs but she left in indelible legacy of her recorded music that comforted and soothed the French during World War II. Piaf's singing has to be appreciated as well. maybe you don't know French, you don't need too. You do know pain, agony, heartbreak, falling in love, loss, death, happiness, sadness, etc. then you will appreciate and love Edith Piaf.
Piaf cd.......2007-05-30
Fabulous music. Film of her life will be out soon featuring this music.

I love the music on this disc.......2007-07-14
Les Paul and his wife Mary Ford are legends in jazz music. My favorite track on this disc is "I'm Sitting On The Top Of The World." Nobody could play the electric guitar as masterfully as Les Paul. Mary Paul's voice is so sensual on the track "I'm A Fool To Care." I love this track. "Tennessee Waltz" and "Vaya Con Dios" are classic romantic tunes. These tracks makes me think of someone special. "In The Mood" is another excellent song that puts me in a great mood. "Bye Bye Blues" is an uptempo track that stands out as one of the best here. "I Really Don't Want To Know" is a pretty song. I love the tenderness in Mary Ford's voice on this track. This disc is filled with great music.

This must be one of the best CD's available letting new comers to LP&MF hear some of their best tracks from the 50's and they have not dated since then. Unfortunately CAPITAL in their wisdom have omitted others which should have been included. I can name but a few:- La Rossita - Mac the Knife - Three little words - Magic Melody - Hold me in your arms - Old Mexico - What is this thing called love - Walking & Whistling Blues - I'm Jealous - By the light of the Silvery Moon - Chicken Reel. and I'm sure there's more. So it looks like we'll have to wait till Les reaches his 100th Birthday before we see a Box Set.
I am tempted to wait - that's if I can manage to live as long as Les. He's doing great, and I hope he will still be playing when he reaches 100! Well done mate!
Must have.......2005-11-02
The recordings sound very modern. You can't tell this wasn't recorded yesterday; just listen to the samples. Les Paul had an inimitable guitar style. The man was the master, and teamed with the easy, lilting style of Mary Ford AKA (Iris) Colleen Summers (who started out in Western music), how could they not score? This music, while a product of its era, is timeless. This is perfection. This is the stuff dreams are made of. I usually review Classical music, but what can be more classic than this?
I only regret that a box set is not available, since I love everything that Les Paul and Mary Ford ever waxed. A particular favorite of mine that is missing is the Hawaiian love song, "The Moon of Manakoora". It is every bit as beautiful as the version recorded by Alfred Ahola Apaka, the crooning voice of Hawaii, and is recorded better. There are other notable omissions that I won't tire you with here, but this is the best set available until a box set is released. Absolutely wonderful music making. Curl up to the fire and warm with it; You'll love how it gets you in the mood.

Having long since shed their image as hip-hop's clown princes, the Beastie Boys now bring what feels like their emeritus recording, a celebratory instrumental memoir of all of the influences (except punk) that brought them to their secure place among hip-hop's fickle elite. The party opens with the aptly titled "B for My Name," its plodding bounce staking claim to the mid-tempo path the album treads almost throughout. "14th St. Break" picks up the pace, especially in the auxiliary percussion breakdown, complete with rally whistle. Then, beginning with "Suco de Tangerina," the album drops into a deep groove cut from dub- and dancehall-tinged ostinati that carry through a full third of its tracks. Among these, "The Gala Event" suffers from a lack of developmental motion that characterizes many of these tracks, but highlights still abound. "Off the Grid," for example, departs from the otherwise unbreakable chill and rips the proceedings wide open, blooming again and again in a series of pulsing riffs that celebrate the very institution of the instrumental groove. More than 20 years since Licensed to Ill took a long, irreverent piss into the mainstream, it seems you can still fight for your right to party. --Jason Kirk

The Mix-Up is Beastie Boys' first-ever full album of all-new instrumental material. The follow-up to 2004's To The 5 Boroughs, The Mix-Up features Diamond, Horovitz and Yauch back on drums, guitar and bass, with able assistance from Keyboard Money Mark and percussionist Alfredo Ortiz, on 12 brand new wordless, sample-less, scratchless originals. Sure to please fans of the instrumental cuts from Check Your Head and Ill Communication and the cult hit compilation album made up largely of those tracks, The In Sound From Way Out!, The Mix-Up finds NYC's favorite sons drawing on one of their arsenal's primary strengths and pushing it into bold new directions.

euro club hits...........2007-07-25
Pretty good album. Anyone who likes this should check out a compilation series on iTunes called "Euro Club Hits" ... (there's a vol. 1, vol. 2, vol. 3, etc. etc.)...... So much of current club music in the USA is based in the stuff coming out of Europe, and yet nobody seems to know of it and the radio doesn't play it here! So I'm taking it as my personal mission to introduce everyone to it as best I can ...... "Euro Club Hits" -- it's only on the digital services for some reason -- iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, Emusic, etc. etc.
Pure Garbage.......2007-07-24
How can some artists always stay fresh with new sounds and others become washed-up? The only reason I give one star is because you can't give zero. This album makes for an expensive drink coaster.
No fresh sounds, nothing upbeat and very monotone. I guess when you have a reputation like Beastie Boys you can assume something good is going to be relesed. After 2 clunkers in a row that's no longer the case.
The name of the album should be called "Fill My Bank Account" since all they are doing is taking your money and retiring on it. These boys are a very long way from "Paul's Boutique" and "Check Your Head"...two masterpieces.
Zero stars!!!!!!!!!!
Wierd.......2007-07-22

The CD from a rap band with no words..........2007-07-16
The Beasties have done it again. This is the album a lot of fans wanted- after hearing tastes of the band's musicianship on songs included in previous albums, one can finally hear the funky stylings of what has been one of the most progressive and influential bands of the last 20 years. Casual fans may not get it- for them, I suggest using it as background music for other activities. In that setting, the hooks may draw you in, or, at worst, you create a non-obtrusive atmosphere of funk driven by vintage street cred.
Actually, There is a "Mix-Up" Here..........2007-07-16
...somebody replaced the new Beastie Boys disc with a 1960's cheesy lounge record!
At least that's what it sounds like to this Beastie fan. I've bought all of their albums, but after one listen to the "Mix-Up," I'm going to have to leave this one on the shelf. The "5 Burroughs" album wasn't perfect but it was a step in the right direction (from the bizarre "Hello Nasty"), but this new "all instrumental" album is a bore to listen to. I think that some people will really like it--perhaps I'm just missing their sense of "irony".

The Beatles' last days as a band were as productive as any major pop phenomenon that was about to split. After recording the ragged-but-right Let It Be, the group held on for this ambitious effort, an album that was to become their best-selling. Though all four contribute to the first side's writing, John Lennon's hard-rocking, "Come Together" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" make the strongest impression. A series of song fragments edited together in suite form dominates side two; its portentous, touching, official close ("Golden Slumbers"/"Carry That Weight"/"The End") is nicely undercut, in typical Beatles fashion, by Paul McCartney's cheeky "Her Majesty," which follows. --Rickey Wright

Second Side is the Best.......2007-07-24
The second side of Abbey Road is my all time favorite record. I have listened to this album hundreds of times over since 1969, I think. The first side is pretty good-- I'd give it 3 stars. But the second side is fabulous. .-- Sam Yulish, author of WHERE HAVE ALL THE HIPPIES GONE and THE HESITANT PSYCHIC AND OTHER STRANGE STORIES.
Top 3 beatles albums........2007-07-23
This is a very great, very influential album by the beatles, and in my opinion it is one of their best, along with sgt. pepper and the white album of course.
the greatest rock album on the planet..........2007-07-23
this is the greatest rock album on the planet and of all time as far as i am concerned... It is bursting with mind boggling originality, brilliance in composition, singing, and musicianship. Both sides offer tremendous rock songs, from John's always fresh and brilliant 'Come together', to beautiful ballads like 'Something', to pure childlike pleasure of 'Octopuss's garden' and 'Maxwell's silver hammer'(somewhat silly, but so well-sung and playful!) to the unbelievably effective 'I want you(she's so heavy)' which ushers in the hard rock era with more gravity than any song had ever done before...'Maxwell's silver hammer' is a comedy-horror-pop song really, a new term(self-coined) that describes it better since Maxwells' silver hammer does come down on someone's head in the song!! Side B is full of awesome songs, the eversunny and phenomenal 'Here comes the sun', a Harrison masterpiece essentially, followed by the near-monastic and philosophical vocal jewel 'Because', with magnificent vocal harmonies by John, Paul, and George(just listen to it!!), and the long medley of brilliant short songs, and controlled rock improvisations of great beauty, power and subtlety, all at the same time. 'You never give me your money and the rest of that song with the enigmatically enchanting guitar riffs by John (presumably) till it fades away to 'Sunking' is one of their most original and greatest musical excursions...It ends with the four chorusing: " one two three four five six seven, all the children go to heaven"... truly mindboggling in its power and beauty, and deeply engaging rock... they are all instrumental virtuosos here, make no mistake about it!!! Abbey road shines with a maturity that goes beyond the ordinary test of time... Decades later it can still surpass all new albums that come out and create waves of recognition...What's the weakness of Abbey road? Mccartney's 'Oh! darling' and/or 'Maxwell's silver hammer(though both somehow fitted in so well(!!)) probably if any...'Oh darling' is an enchanting piece nevertheless with very Un-mcartniyish vocal presentation and appears to be an attempt to rise above Lennon's hardrock tour-de-force 'i want you(she's so heavy)'... but it is neatly sandwiched between maxwell's silver hammer, and octopuss's garden before the side a mindstopper 'i want you'. it really fits in with more poppy and agitated vocal type all at the same time in a strange and wondrous fit indeed!! The medley of songs on side b are the best concocted rock lineage that exists...What a fantastic gift to the world before the band dissolved!!!!...
I am buying a new copy.......2007-07-13
This is my favorite album (well, one of them), so I have wrecked mine by listening to it on the beach.... Number 10 to the end are totally WRECKED. So here I am, buying a new copy. I haven't heard the second half of the album in a loooong time!
Great songwriting and production of Romantic Pop Rock.......2007-07-12
If you are a fan of angry music, this ain't for you (sorry). In the context of the times it had a certain charm and still retains much of the original charm. If you are not a romantic, don't try to understand this album or band. Because the Beatles were, if nothing else, hopeless romantics who used music to find love. On that level Abbey Road works quite well. For the segment of the population that enjoys romantic rock you will find this collection of songs rewarding.

Better known as the "White Album," this was meant to be the record that brought them back to earth after three years of studio experimentation. Instead, it took them all over the place, continuing to burst the envelope of pop music. Lennon and McCartney were still at the height of their powers, with Lennon in particular growing into one of rock's towering figures. But even McCartney could still rock, and the amazement on "Helter Skelter" was that he had vocal cords at the end. From Beach Boys knock-offs to reggae and to the unknown ("Revolution #9"), this has it all. Some records have legend written all over them; this is one. --Chris Nickson
Customer Reviews:
A perennial classic.......2007-07-23
As good today as it was back in the 1980s when I first bought it.
Breaking the Barriers.......2007-06-29
This was the album where the Beatles grew up and moved into a more mature and less organised sound. That road had begun with "A Day In a Life" and "Within You Without You" and "Good Morning" in Sgt Peppers - but the Beatles were still a smart pop rock band then.
In the White Album, there is a wonderful sense of a loss of control - and yet this is still the Beatles at their creative peak. Not caring what people think, they're just playing to the maximum of their abilities. And shattering barriers.
The power of their varied personalities comes through. And different sides of their personality. Who cares about anything except the music I'm feeling now? seems to be the prevalent thought here. The White Album is the Beatles Matured - who would have imagined that the Beatles would create "Helter Skelter"? or "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"...Epic stuff that certified that the Beatles could rock. "Dear Prudence" and "Sexy Sadie" and "Blackbird" are eminently listenable. In fact - apart from some ditties and departures - the album is strikingly distinctive as a playground of sounds - it is dynamic from one end to the other and still eminently listenable and deep.
How do you define genius? This is one hard album to ignore.
Some of the Beatles Best Work.......2007-06-27
Wow...this brings back great memories. The songs are so diverse and unusual, showing their true talent and creative song writing abilities. The songs are fun and strange all at the same time. It is one of my favorites of the Beatles. When you can have "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Rocky Raccoon" and "Blackbird" in one package....what more can you ask!
It's Four Solo Albums & Still Great.......2007-06-23
This was on sale way Back in November 1968, for $5.00. That was the best five Bucks I ever spent. By 1968 after Eight years Together, The Beatles had just about seen it all, and they were very close to imploding. But, Lucky for all of us John, Paul, George & Ringo were on top of their Game and with the "White Album" they Presented their Best Songwriting and their greatest Playing over the Span of the 30 Tracks Here.
From: "Back in the USSR" all the way thro' to "Goodnight" and my favorite Track in reverse: "Revolution #9" you get a Beatle Album So Different & so Bold in it's Scope and Range from anything else they Gave us. We were Very Lucky to Have this band on the Planet from: 1964-70. It will never happen again in our Lifetime, But here it is, in all it's Glory...
There are almost 1,000 reviews posted here and About 95 Per-Cent of those Reviews are Gonna tell you how GREAT this is, and it is, Don't waste your Time Reading About this Record, BUY IT NOW.

It begins with a twittering of birdsong lifted from "Across the Universe." And once the triple-tracked a capella harmonies of "Because" enter, followed by snatches from "A Hard Day's Night" and "The End," leading into a fired-up "Get Back," it becomes obvious that this is far more than just another Beatles compilation. This is Love, conceived by the Fabs' former producer George Martin and son Giles as a stageshow soundtrack to Cirque de Soleil's Las Vegas spectacular of the same name, but appears to have taken on a life of its own. Whereas the Beatles' last release, 1, delivered the (over?) familiar hits in a nice, simple package, Love is a mélange of the familiar and obscure, all literally mixed together in one 78-minute audio collage which succeeds in reminding the listener just why the Beatles truly are, as Lennon put it, "toppermost of the poppermost." There's no new Beatles material per se, but the songs are all approached differently--some are cut together in a flawlessly mixed medley (check out "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!/I Want You/Helter Skelter"), some reassemble different backing tracks and vocal performances to create new spins on old classics; but all the songs are revitalized considerably. Even in its weakest moments (which probably work better in the context of the show itself), Love is still a formidable prospect, and one has to admire Martin's willingness to go out on a limb with such a project. While purists may complain that the cut 'n' paste nature of the project is simply tampering with perfection, at the very least it'll make them reach for the originals and enjoy them all over again. For newcomers and everyone else, it makes a fine listen, both in its sonic clarity (the actual tracks are the best they've sounded on CD) and audacious nature. --Thom Allott

Phenominal.......2007-07-24
This is a great album! I hadn't realized just how much of an integral part George Martin was of the Beatles until I heard this album. He and his son did a great job in remixing these songs.
Tremendous.......2007-07-19
First things first, Love by the Beatles, features music that is all from the Beatles original recordings. That said, the starting point for this CD is very strong. If you can get past the fact that there are what amounts to remixes of many of the recordings. I am a firm believer that any music by the Beatles is great music. Love by the Beatles is no exception to that belief. The sound hear is outstanding. There are many of the classic Beatles songs hear, with some eerie renditions and some excellent. There is an ethereal quality to Strawberry Fields and I am the Walrus sounds excellent. This is a must have for Beatles fans. I rate it a strong four stars.
Where are the listening samples?.......2007-07-18
I agree with the many others who are displeased that Amazon etc did not offer consumers listening samples of this album. I agree with those who feel that Sir George Martin and son should have taken it even further, wilder. I'd like to hear the Beatles FUNKED up! Bring in (sir) George Clinton on the next Beatles remix project!
love the love cd.......2007-07-15
always loved the beatles..this rendition is great great mixes just another way of listening to my favoret band
Beatles in a higher dimension.......2007-07-10
I was 15 years old when the Beatles hit. I have been a super fan from the start.
These tracks are superior in their quality and you can hear the harmonies better in both the vocals and instrumentation.
In many tracks the music is interwoven with music from other Beatles songs, making them..in my opinion..better. George Martin should definetly go into the vault and do more of the same. I am hearing things I have never heard before. Strawberryfields was terrific. This CD is a must have.

Being, as she is, the daughter of prominent British actor Keith Allen, the cynics could easily dismiss the rise of Lily Allen as an act of backroom nepotism, a talent-free starlet helped to the stage by the right connections. But one listen to her debut album Alright, Still dispels any doubts about young Ms. Allen's star quality. Possessed of a feisty wit and taste for urban storytelling that should see her compared to Mike "The Streets" Skinner, these 11 tracks of sunshine-friendly reggae-pop cover topics including frustrating potential closing-time suitors ("Knock 'Em Out"), being happy when your ex is having a bad time ("Smile"), and having a little brother who likes a bit of a smoke--and not just of the tobacco variety ("Alfie"). Wisely, however, Allen doesn't let the grittiness of the subject matter tarnish the golden pop suss of the songs, a suite of gleaming productions by names including Mark Ronson and Gwen Stefani collaborator Greg Kurstin that take inspiration from the lighter end of reggae and vintage rocksteady. Doubtless some corners of the press will pillory her as a poor role model, but there's an engaging honesty to the likes of "LDN"--a love song to a city filled with teenage muggers, pimps, and crack whores, narrated by someone who's cycling because "the filth took away my license." Like father, like daughter. --Louis Pattison
From Capitol Records
The 21-year-old Lily Allen, pronounced by NME "the archetypal singer-songwriter for the iPod generation," took Britain by storm in summer 2006 with her debut album Alright, Still rocketing onto the U.K. Album chart at No. 2 and her first U.K. single, "Smile," topping the U.K. Airplay chart for six weeks in a row. Now she's set her sights on America--and early reports indicate she won't exactly be flying under the radar here either. "She symbolizes a new blogging-age, middle-class girl: cockily ambitious, skeptical yet enthusiastic, technically savvy, musically open, obsessed with public expression and ready to fight back," said The New York Times in a feature on Lily.
Allen was born in Hammersmith, a borough in Greater London, and grew up all over London - Shepherds Bush, Bloomsbury, Islington. "I went to 13 different schools so I never had time to make enduring friendships. Music became a lifeline to me. I listened to punk, ska and reggae, courtesy of my parents' record collections," she says, which explains why, in addition to numerous up-and-coming dance artists, she counts The Specials, T. Rex, The Slits, and Blondie as favorites.
"I got expelled from various schools and was sent to boarding school as they thought it would be a restraining influence, but I ran away when I was 14," she recalls. "It was obvious I didn't like authority." Although she dropped out of school, Allen continued to have a voracious appetite for books and music. "I always felt I couldn't articulate my feelings as much as I wanted to. Books and music helped me do that," she says. "I started to feel like I could have a voice."
Lily's incisive lyrical observations belie her years. "With the kind of music I do you have to be direct and quite literal," she says. "I don't play an instrument, which really makes me focus on the vocal melody, and the lyrics are incredibly important to me. I don't want to be part of a scene - the whole idea of that makes me feel sick - and most of the music I listen to is by outsider figures, which is where I feel happiest."
There was a little old lady who was walking down the road She was struggling with bags from Tesco There were people in the city having lunch in the park I believe that is called alfresco Then a kid came along to offer a hand But before she had time to accept it Hits her over the head, doesn't care if she's dead 'Cause he's got all her jewelry and wallet (from "LDN")
In November 2005, Allen started posting tracks on her MySpace site to see what fans thought of them. "Since then it's gone mad," she says. (Her songs have received over five million total plays to date.) "The online support I got for my music grew quickly, then the next thrill was hearing it on the radio. The reaction has been so positive it's left me reeling a bit. But I'm happy and I know the songs can live up to people's expectations."
And indeed they have. "Through and through, it sounds like part Millie Small, part Gwen Stefani, part Blondie, without ever really sounding much like anything other than Allen's own mash-up of cool," said Rolling Stone. The New Yorker has praised her "delightful, ska-inflected songs" and Pitchfork said "Alright, Still isn't anything else but a fantastic success. Not only does Allen deliver on the musical promise hinted at in her MySpace demos, she also acquits herself as a genuine personality with wit and attitude to spare."
Allen's cheeky, street-smart observations imbue Alright, Still with an unerringly modern female point-of-view. On "Smile," Lily admits to feeling guilty - but not that guilty - for feeling good when an ex-boyfriend cries because she won't give it another go. Perhaps he shouldn't have slept with her neighbor. On "Knock 'Em Out," a lame pick-up line is met with a litany of bogus reasons (ranging from various sexually transmitted diseases to a house fire) why "it's not gonna happen/not in a million years." And while the chorus of "LDN" brims with unabashed affection for London, the verses are a deft social commentary exposing the warts of a town intent on keeping up appearances. Cynicism and a sunny outlook aren't mutually exclusive in Allen's world, which goes a long way towards explaining her unbridled confidence and contagious joie de vivre. The world is still her oyster - even if it was dredged from murky waters.

euro club hits...........2007-07-25
Pretty good album. Anyone who likes this should check out a compilation series on iTunes called "Euro Club Hits" ... (there's a vol. 1, vol. 2, vol. 3, etc. etc.)...... So much of current club music in the USA is based in the stuff coming out of Europe, and yet nobody seems to know of it and the radio doesn't play it here! So I'm taking it as my personal mission to introduce everyone to it as best I can ...... "Euro Club Hits" -- it's only on the digital services for some reason -- iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, Emusic, etc. etc.
Very Funny CD.......2007-07-18
Lily Allen has to be the best British female artist ever! Well, besides Amy Winehouse. This CD is brutally honest and very, very funny. Lily does an amazing job on this CD. Why? Because like I said, it's brutally honest. Get the PA version because even though there's cursing, it's used sparingly and in context, but it's still not for anyone who isn't at least a preteen yet. The lyrics are in the liner notes, though.
The songs on the CD and what I rated them, 1 to 5:
1. Smile. Well, it's on the radio a lot but it's pretty funny with Lily Allen kicking out a boyfriend and enjoying his cries to get her back. 4/5
2. Knock 'em Out. Bad boyfriends trying to get a girl's number. Hilarious excuses ensue, especially "I've got herpes, err, no I've got syphilis...AIDS! AIDS! I've got AIDS!" 5/5
3. LDN. Lily loves a city with teenage muggers and pimps? Interesting. 4/5
4. Everything's Just Wonderful. She thinks about the world, weight loss, spaghetti bolognaise, getting a flat, and having her ex's money but not getting it, but in the end, she supposes "that's the way that things go". Funny, but not up to potential. 4/5
5. Not Big. Childish rant about her boyfriend being good enough. Like the sound though. 3/5
6. Friday Night. Girl goes to bar, other girls try to get boys, girl gets revenge. Too generic at first, but becomes good. 5/5
7. Shame For You. Now she's back on track! Very funny song about dumping a boyfriend. 5/5
8. Littlest Things. WHAT? A love ballad? Shocking surprise, but overall, as sweet as sugar. 5/5
9. Take What You Take. Good song about doing what you want to do, but it may shock parents. 5/5
10. Friend Of Mine. A childhood friend becomes a bad girl. Good message about self-respect. 5/5
11. Alfie. Song about Lily's brother Alfie smoking weed and Lily trying to talk to him. Really good messages and great beat. 5/5
12. Nan You're A Window Shopper. Very tongue in cheek parody of Window Shopper by 50 Cent about Lily's nana. But may offend some. 5/5
Overall: 4.5/5
I wish I could do 4 1/2 stars! This CD is a must-have.
The Most Fun of Them All.......2007-07-17
Short Version: BUY THIS ALBUM...YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!
Long Version: Lily is the british version of Pink in my mind because of the attitude she brings to her music. I love this chick. She has a maturity that I think will sustain her as an artist for a lot of years. We may never really get to know her in America, and that is too bad (I hope differently though). However, of the 15 albums I brought, this is honestly my favorite. Any chick who sings "...you must be joking me, if you think that you'll be poking me" has something I want to her more of down the road.
Mostly, she is really refreshing change of pace. Part of me want to know what she listens too when she has time.

Cheeky and Fun.......2007-07-13
Lily Allen is probably one of the most talented young artists around. Her lyrics are hilarious and the music is very upbeat and fun. I haven't taken in out of my CD changer since I bought it.
