5 out of 5 stars Criminally Underrated.......2007-02-20

This album is great. The opening track, DFLO Shuttle, is prestinely infectious and my personal favorite; it calls for the repeat button and that loopy hook will pin-ball in your head all day urging you to call in sick from work and go to the beach.

The lengthy concluding number "Good Thing We're Rappin'" doesn't do much for me. I find it to be too long and it's lack-luster structure strays from what made DU shine. I get the fact that they are paying homage to their love of music and how it has steered them away from another lifestyle, but in the delivery this becomes a mediocre Ice Cube narrative to my ears. Maybe the group was itching to try the "Too $hort" formula... it's not particularly awful, just sort of boring compared to the dizzying heights the rest of the album already took the listener.

I urge any serious music buff to re-visit the music of Digital Underground. I never fully appreciated their excellence until years later when my developed adult ear was capable of acknowledging just how clever, articulate and ahead of their times this group was. There is a sensitive politically conscious human message here. Shock G's charismatic, passionate delivery allows him to make deep statements without sounding preachy, or abrasive- in fact to the contrary he's selectively hilarious and easy to listen to on the whole.

I have yet to find a modern group this confident, creative and fun. Take the shuttle back to DU's early days... it is quite rewarding.

4 out of 5 stars VERY SLEPT ON!.......2003-01-05

Even the reviewers for this album weren't able to appreciate this album to its fullest. The gold single, "Kiss You Back", was a great song and it once again showcased their stylish jocularity in front of understated funky rhythms. But this album has a couple of diamonds in the ruff that have gone largely unnoticed. First, "Good Thing We're Rappin'" rivals Too Short for creator of one of the most Pimpinest (yes its a word) hip hop songs in the 90s. It helps that 2Pac, one of the best ever, introduces the song. It chronicles the days and times in the life of a west coast pimp, with the taste for the material, the disdain for disrespectful, and the "I don't love them hos...", and the wonderful humor attitude that Snoop Dogg adorned on Doggystyle, all while maintaining their essentially light hearted flavor.

But the best song on this album, which barely receives mention is "Sons of the P". In my book, this song ranks as one of the funkiest hip hop songs ever...that's right, EVER. I think it deserves this status for several reasons. One, they were able to do so much in this song without it sounding overdone, overproduced, maintaining the funk, which is at its core. Two, the beats AND the lyrics were funky, in the P-Funk, free-your-mind-and-your-(butt)-will-follow sense. Here's a sample, "we're pulling down the pants to your mind/this time/we'll make love to you're intellect/the people in control are working very hard to keep your natural desires in check". Three, the song is in the funk anthem tradition, spanning 9 minutes, plus they make you feel like the song should not have ended a second sooner. Fourth, they were the perfect group to pull this off, with their funk base, comical approach, and their willingness to sacrifice album sales and commerical appeal for creativity and substance. This is truly an ode to the gods of funk. Clinton even hands the reigns of the funk over to them...the seal of approval. PLEASE GIVE THIS SONG A LISTEN! see for yourself. They are truly the "Sons of the P".

Gieseking was an extraordinary stylist and perhaps the century's greatest sonorist. His interpretations of Debussy were justly celebrated. Unhappily, the technology EMI possessed at the time these renditions of the Preludes were captured, in 1953 and 1954, does only marginal justice to him. At least the recordings were made in a reverberent acoustic well suited to the music, and the tone that comes through, while thin at the top, is solid. --Ted Libbey

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Legendary.......2000-04-05

Gieseking paints these little gems in the most subtle colors with no excessive lingering over textures here and no fuss. Even if other artists have brought more pianistic refinement, Gieseking is still revelatory in terms of naturalness and spontaneity. The relative lack of immediacy in the (mono) sound only seems to enhance the mystery. This complete set certainly is legendary--something of a reference point, in fact--and fits on one mid-priced CD, too.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime performance by a master.......1999-12-14

Gieseking had no peer in his performances of Debussy's piano works. While there are a number of fine performances of these miniatures; Gieseking reaches the heights of sublimity in nuance, tonal quality, interpretation. A first choice for these works.

5 out of 5 stars Right Touch.......2006-06-22

Monique Haas recorded work by many different composers but she owned French impressionism. Her solo-piano recordings for Erato may be the best evidence of this artistry, but the preludes featured here on Disc 1 also stand out because of how well Haas was able to convey Debussy's submerged lyricism. The preludes show off her lovely sense of timing. Disc 2 is headlined by Ravel's two piano concertos, and both are worth repeat visits. What you may find stunning, though, is how successfully Haas was able to integrate both a Bartok concerto and Bartok's Sonatine into her musical universe. Compare her performance of either piece with the version recorded by, say, Zoltan Kocsis. It's hard to recognize that they're by the same composer, so thoroughly has Haas made them her own. Even if you own other performances of everything in this two-disc set, therefore, the package still wouldn't be redundant.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A passion and a problem.......2006-02-10

Stephane Mallarme once defended the complexity of his poetic output by saying that good poetry must be "a passion and a problem". A similar proposition is ensued by the redoubtable Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (1920-1995): even his most ardent admirers were sometimes dumbfounded by the Italian's seeming unwillingness to please, his disregard for other people's opinions (and also, on occasion, of the composers' written indications), his detached and glacial interpretations and his lack of interest in virtuosity, not to mention his maddening propensity for cancelling concerts. And yet, we're talking about one of the supreme keyboard artists of all time, a musician who none other than the finicky and exacting Sviatoslav Richter once referred to as a master, and whose deeply probing and analytical playing was buttressed by one of the colossal techniques in pianistic history.

This volume in Philips' Great Pianists of the 20th Century series - the first of two dedicated to Michelangeli - is cleverly put together, presenting the maestro in some staples of his repertoire (especially Debussy and Ravel) and adding a couple of epoch-making recordings for good measure. The latter are Ravel's Piano Concerto in G and Gaspard de la Nuit, both definitive renditions which brought a new degree of technical finesse to those scores. The concerto, an early stereo register from 1957 in which Michelangeli is aptly partnered by the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Ettore Gracis, is unmatched in the pianist's impeccable fingerwork, evenness of touch - notably in the first movement trills - and structural coherence. The Gaspard, recorded in 1959, remains a benchmark performance to this day, not only for its tremendous technical aplomb but also for Michelangeli's unique pedal control: Ondine and Le Gibet are waft on a myriad tones and hues, and Scarbo is taken not as a virtuoso study in the fashion of Argerich or Pogorelich, but as a dark, gloomy, almost hypnotic journey.

Debussy's Preludes confirm Michelangeli as one of the greatest keyboard colourists ever, each piece a sound world in itself, in a technically immaculate and tonally ravishing display. The Images fare less well, belonging as they do to the pianist's later period, when he apparently became overly conscious - one might say obsessed - with chord micromanagement and sound projection, resulting in performances which often resembled a collection of details rather than thorough interpretations (Michelangeli's 1987 Gaspard recorded in the Vatican is a case in point: slow, fragmentary and erratic, it is a parody of his earlier attempts, particularly the one shown here).

This first set on Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli shows many of his best moments, exhibiting his rich and variegated tone (he once said he aimed at a sound between the organ and the violin), his flawless technique and his deep-thinking interpretative approach. Some scintillating Scarlatti and Galuppi are also thrown in for a more complete representation of Michelangeli's favourite recorded repertoire. Therefore, in spite of the less inspired portions of the Debussy, it deserves 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime, but you may already have these performances.......2001-12-16

Those who already own a number of Michelangeli recordings may already own the performances on these disks. The Debussy comes from his DG cycle (413450-2, 427391-2, and 415372-2). The Ravel concerto comes from the EMI Ravel/Rachmaninov concerto disk (CDC 7 49326 2, but it's been remastered, so the number might have changed). The Gaspard is also available from Music & Arts (CD-955).

The only shortcoming of this collection is that if you want all the Debussy Preludes, you will need to buy two other full-price DG CDs, and if you want the Rachmaninov 4th Piano Concerto, you will need to buy a mid-priced EMI CD containing the Rachmaninov and the Ravel. The strength of this collection is that what's here is fabulous, and the cost is much less than buying the performances individually.

Michelangeli was a superb Debussy player. But it's worth noting that his performances were controversial, particularly these DG ones. A more mainstream (and also fabulous) recommendation for the Preludes might be Paul Jacobs's set or Walter Gieseking's set. Michelangeli's Debussy is much more chiseled than either Jacobs or Gieseking.

Michelangeli's Ravel is also superb, and not at all controversial--no one else comes close. His Gaspard is, well, unbelieveable. This particular performance is often regarded as his finest, and I think I agree. My favorite movement is the last, where the gnome in hiding is depicted by a barely audible tremolo. When it appears it is in a shocking trill.

So, this is a great intro to a magnificent pianist--and if you have these performances, then look at the Michelangeli II volume in the Great Pianists series. That volume is fully as great.

5 out of 5 stars THE Ravel G Major Piano Concerto!.......1999-08-12

I have rarely encountered the almost unanimous consensus that adheres to Michelangeli's recording of the Ravel G Major Concerto. I agree with another Amazon reviewer that the second movement is one of those experiences that stops time. And just listen to the incredible quirkily effective trills in the first movement (Ravel wrote them that way, with the *upper* note as the melody - what an ear he had!); who else could trill this fast while linking the chain of trills seamlessly? I even like the sound of the orchestral whip. This recording is one for the ages. Zimerman's recent recording with Boulez/Cleveland is superb, but it's nowhere close.

5 out of 5 stars Titanic and Stunning.......1999-06-02

The Best Gaspard in existence!! What titanic music.!

5 out of 5 stars Diamond amongst gold.......1998-12-16

This is so easy. If I want to show a friend the best Jazz ever, I play Kind Of Blue for them. If I want to show them the greatest Classical piano performance ever I put on Michelangeli's playing of the Ravel Concerto in G, second movement. His subtlety of touch and sense of dynamics is absolutely mind spinning. Everyone has melting musical moments in their lives but for me , this is it. Of course, the rest of the music is not too shabby; there is some beautiful stuff there. But the Ravel Concerto alone is worth the price of admission. In memory of the late and great Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli.
