If Roast Beef of Old England isn't enough to spawn a dose of contact scurvy, many other of these two dozen salty tunes will set the boat a-rocking. Treasures such as "A Jolly Sailor's True Description of a Man-of-War" and "Drops of Brandy" detail life among British seamen of the early 1800s without dredging up too much of the usual pirates, shipwrecks, or mutiny. It's an historical document of the regular life at sea, inspired by the British Navy novels of Patrick O'Brian, with intentions to anchor the writing in the ordinary sounds and stories of those fictionalized seafaring times. Glad fiddle, fife, and Jerry Bryant's humble six-man choral crew Starboard Mess spill the beans in suitable fashion without a sailor's colorful vocabulary. Set Sail With These Great Songs.......2007-01-28

Jerry Bryant and his Starboard Mess offer up to the listener some wonderful performances of traditional British sailor tunes. They are all performed acapella, and despite other reviewers saying that these songs lack spirit, I find that there's plenty in store. Pennywhistle and fiddle songs are also thrown in and do nothing but add to the enjoyment of this album. Read your favorite Jack Aubrey novel or other seafaring tales such as "Treasure Island" while listening to this album to truly enhance your literary experience. My personal favorites include "Spanish Ladies" and "Bay of Biscay-o."

You should see the looks I get from the little wannabe thugs in their tricked out Hondas listening to hip-hop when I pull up next to them in my conservative white Toyota Camry and I'm belting out lines like "We'll rant and we'll roar like true British sailors...." Jay-Z can't even hold a candle to these wonderful old tunes.

Highly recommended.

Just what I was looking for, some traditional British songs from the age of sail. I recomend this for anyone with an interest in British maritime and naval history.

I've owned this CD for a few years now, and it hasn't become stale yet.

Being a 'younger' person with generally 'younger' preferences in music, and yet still a person thoroughly devoted to Patrick O'Brian and all his works, on first listening I was doubtful.

Another two or three spins around the CD player, though, and I was hooked. Crisp, clear and obviously as historically accurate as they can be, these songs give delight even now.

Best use? Volume dialled up to eleven for the morning drive to work, bellowing along at the top of my voice - and often the bottom of my range! Heart of Oak, Roast Beef of Old England, The Shannon and the Chesapeake - uproarious. Sailor's Jacket is the foot-tappingest instrumental; it still sets my toes a-jumping. And the sweeter songs? Give them plenty of wellie .. Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy is fabulous.

Other big numbers: A Jolly Sailor's True Description of a Man-of-War, A New Sea Song (Sweethearts & Wives) - which has some fabulously 'historically accurate' narrative within (POB readers will know whereof I speak! ;-} - and Distressed Men-of-War - another song referred to within the POB Canon.

Heartily recommended.

Great CD!.......2005-10-28

I am very impressed with the quality of this CD. The sound is clear and the tones perfect. It was a surprise just how familiar all the song is! They are very vivid and worldly. I bought this CD with out knowing what was on it; I was truly surprised and happy with it. My 6th graders will enjoy learning to this CD, and as well as singing the songs to complement our reading of Treasure Island.

This is early stage techno / dance / purple rain influenced / Kraftwerk sound but still E.L. is unique unto his own style. I love it, but it may be too slow for some folks - really only 3 good songs on here. But you can't download it anywhere (My House ON The Nile) so you have to buy the CD. If you have any questions about it shoot me an email. It's a must in your "Old School" library. I tried to find out what happened to E.L. but not much info after 1993...

Midway on the Nile.......2001-10-24

I have four of The Egyptian Lover CD's, this is the third. This CD is midway because it only has eight tracks, which is relatively short. Out of these eight tracks, only five are considered his best work, yet can be found with a slightly remixed tone on each of the other CD's. The Egyptian Lover "On the Nile" is true to his form and the music is boomin'.

Word, this is a 'Rab that rocks, baybee. By far the best CD in my collection, E.L. rocks the house, whether you be Muslims, Jews, Christians, Hindus, whatevee, the Egyptian Lover caters to all grooves, funks, tastes, and rhymes. Funkadelic not awful, like Pita on Falafel! Buy this CD, word to the Sahara!

An execellent album.......1998-11-09

I am an Avid fan of the egyptian lover. This album is probably hs best work to date. The classic single "egypt, egypt" is well known and "you're so fine" delivers an energy like no other, and I still play his releases today in my nightclub. The crowd goes absolutly wild. I strongly recommend this album to anyone who like s the old school west coast music.

As evocative as any perfume, this CD brings forth clear images of the films for which this music was written. Makes a charming background for any party, seemingly brainless fun, yet sophisticated and delightful. Also good to cook to...

For this release, Silva Screen released their previous disc of Music from Fellini films, along with the best tracks from Nic Raine's 1998 recording of the complete score of Romeo and Juliet, as well as Paul Bateman's 2001 Godfather Trilogy disc, along with a few new tracks and other tracks from Silva's back catalog of music.

The last two tracks of the first disc, and the entire second disc is devoted to Fellini Films. All of the Fellini tracks are from 1993's "Music From Fellini Films", with Derek Wadsworth conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic (then credited as the Czech Symphony), with the exception of "Toby Dammit" which was recorded for this disc with Mario Klemens conducted.

"The Taming of the Shrew" is from Silva Screen's successful 2001 "Shakespeare at the Movies" set, while Death On The Nile and the Glass Mountain have been newly recorded for this set.

In conclusion, if you had the first disc of Rota/Fellini music then perhaps this would not be worth it, but overall this is a superb collection with that previous release in its entirely (remastered in HDCD surround sound, I might add), along with the best tracks from the Godfather Trilogy and Romeo and Juliet, with some more films sprinkled about, its a must-have, for anyone who wants a taste of Rota for less than $25.

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra performs the gems by composer Nino Rota, conducted by Derek Wadsworth, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Mario Klemens. This latest release "The Essential Nino Rota Film Music Collection", has all the romantic and poetic scores ever conceived. Rota's music remains in your mind with haunting and forbiding themes that will stay with you the rest of your days.

Rota has the ability to capture the moments from each cue in his scores with "THE TAMING OF THE SHREW", "THE GLASS MOUNTAIN", "LA DOLCE VITA" and "ROMEO & JULIET, the tapestry is fine and the weave is just right. That's just for starters, listen and recall the score from "THE GODFATHER" and "THE GODFATHER II", one only has to close your eyes and visualize the characters that came to life on the big screen, the music from Rota was a large part of this. And Disc Two with "THE NIGHTS OF CABIRIA", "AMARCORD" and "LA STRADA", can sit back and soak up each passage and counterparts that prevail.

This can only be one of the most sought after collections complete in every detail for any "film-score-buff" worth his salt. As you listen to this CD, you can visualize each scene the cue is recalling. And speaking for one and all movie music collectors----this is a keeper!

DEATH ON THE NILE from AMAZON.......2007-02-21

I tried to get this performance some years ago and found it was unavailable through retail channels. I tried the ABC and even the BBC when in London but was unsuccessful. I was delighted to find it now available through Amazon, and it was less expensive than through stores. Full marks to Amazon and five stars for the score, it is amazing.

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!!.......2007-01-07

After seeing the film dozens of times I was thrilled to purchase the orignal soundtrack I was hoping to find for such a long time! A must for all the Agatha Christie film lovers! I definitely consider it one of Nino Rota's masterpieces. The melodies are outstanding. Simply beautiful. I had previously purchased the soundtrack cds of "MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS" and "EVIL UNDER THE SUN", both fantastic and released by DGR soundtracks. I'm looking forward to a fourth soundtrack release of "THE MIRROR CRACK'D" from the homonymous picture staring Angela Landsbury, Liz Tayor, Rock Hudson, Tony Curtis, Kim Novak: that would make a perfect poker!

Dissecting comedy, analyzing jokes or, in this case, comic songs, has all the allure of pulling off the wings of a butterfly to see how it flies. Setting off writing a comic song is rather like being your own crossword compiler, designing the grid, filling in all the squares, setting your own clues. No, its not, really. Its more like taking a pile of kids building bricks and making a spectacular skyscraper from them. No, thats not it either. But there are elements of both that are pertinent (a good word for seminars). In other words, comedy (and comic songwriting) is hard work. Think of the last time you told a joke and it didnt come off. The material was right but maybe the delivery was off. But remember the joy when the response was perfect: not only did they laugh, but you sensed the anticipation: this is going to be funny. And for this album, the anticipation certainly pays off. Anyone who grew up in the 1950s and 1960s will recall the wonderful humor of the works of Tom Lehrer, the classic HMV (Angel in this country) LPs of Michael Flanders and Donald Swann. More recently weve seen how Stephen Sondheim and William Bolcom can easily move back and forth between the serious and the humorous. And just to prove that comedy can be serious business, we have the participation of Marc-Andre Hamelin, one of the most highly regarded concert and recital pianists as accompanist and composer, joined by his wife Jody Karin Applebaum. Her resume includes performances of Bachs Christmas Oratorio and St. Matthew Passion, Handels Messiah, to contemporary works by Stephen Albert, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Gorecki. Together they have performed in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Canada, England and the Middle East. Together they have recorded music of Britten, Schoenberg, Bolcom, Wolpe, Weill, Satie and Poulenc. Here both they and you have some fun for a change!

A Trancendental Sense of Humor!!!!!!.......2005-07-14

As an amateur pianist, I know how it is to play music of different styles for different occasions. I also have a slightly skewered sense of humor as well as a love of serious classical music. So on my shelves I have Dr. Demento as well as Mahler, Broadway Shows as well as Shostakovich. Marc-Andre Hamelin, one of the best pianist nowadays because he makes the most hardest piece of music sound easy, is married to Jody Karin Applebaum, a wonderful singer. They have recorded the Cabaret songs of Bolcom, Britten and Fredrich Hollaender and now turn their attention to comedy songs from many eras. Much of this repertoire is taken from Sarah Walker's Cd on Hyperion. Applebaum's diction is very clear and every song has a different mood and different voices and accents when needed. Comparisons between William Bolcom and Joan Morris are inevitable. Bolcom's "Lime Jello Marshmallow Cottage Cheese Surprise" is also included. The program notes are written by Jeremy Nicholas, who has provided us with very informative program notes for Hyperion CD's, and who has written some wonderful songs such as "Usherette's Blues" and "Place Settings". Tom Lehrer's classic "Masochism Tango" makes an appearance (which is also on one of Dr. Demento's greatest hits CD's).Hamelin's recordings and performances have one thing that many pianist's do not have-HUMOR (when it's needed, of course). Here, he gets to put it to good use, and you can tell that they're having fun. This is a live recording, so there is much laughing from the audience, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Hamelin keeps suprising me with his CD's and repertoire choices, and this is no exception. Let's have some more, please!!! (maybe Dave Frishberg, more Flanders and Swann?).

A Great Must Have .......2005-12-29

Cabin in the Sky is an excellent, excellent black film. Very entertaining and a movie that projects the power of a conscience. I first saw Cabin in Sky on the AMC channel with my dad when I was 15 years old. I am now 32 years old and every time I watch the movie it is as if I am watching it for the first time. This is a great movie and I can't wait for the DVD version.

I have to give this CD 5 stars since it provides americans the only chance to listen to the fine voice of Kenneth Spencer. It's worth buing the CD just for the one track he's singing.

Louis, Lena, Ethel, and Eddie in a classic.......2000-12-13

CABIN IN THE SKY is one of my favorite films, and the soundtrack does full justice to the score and the performers. 5 extended versions and 4 outtakes are welcome additions to this entertaining CD. The combination of jazz and inspirational tunes surpisingly come together very harmoniously in this mixture of fantasy and reality. The sound quality is fine, though a stereo remix was not possible. From the opening "Lil' Black Sheep" to "Taking a Chance on Love" the score is full of gems and anyone who loves musicals will be inspired by this soundtrack.

INCREDIBLE SOUNDTRACK.......1999-07-31

Duke Ellington, Ethel Waters & Lena Horne, what else could a musical ask for. Three giants of jazz & blues,who show us a small portion of their great indvidual talents on this soundtrack.

Duke Ellington's , Going Up, Lena's version of Ain't it the Truth, and the wonderful swinging vocals of Ethel Waters. One of the african-american divas that was there when blues and jazz started, and one of the earliest to be recorded. Makes you wonder why more musicals were not made with these great artists.Reccommend also all of Miss Waters recordings reissued on the Classics Label from 1921-1940. This cd is a must for anyone interested in jazz or blues.

What a soundtrack to modern life! This is quite a gem of a record and a hard one to classify. From its lush soul full orchestral forays to cool trip hop with transcendent ambient moments it flows seamlessly down the Nile so to speak. Each song is embedded with revelatory moments as if some sort of critical mass is achieved through skill and talent. The cello soars in the hands of Martin Tillman and Tom Vedvik provides almost a magical sonic landscape. Plenty of kind words appraised some of this material in its previous incarnation which is no longer available. It was released on Patrick Leonard s (producer of Madonna and Pink Floyd) short-lived label Unitone, this time with the additional songs its even better. Several songs were used in the Michael Mann film Ali and other songs have been used during the Olympics and in several television soundtracks. Tillman is the cellist of choice in Hollywood after all and have played on over 200 film scores! He just finished up Pirates of Caribbean 3 . He also performs his cello magic on some select shows with Elton John, like Elton s 60th birthday celebration shows in Madison Square Garden last month and Wembley Stadium this summer. Luckily this material has been given a new life with this release and with great additional tracks like tirego and the starkly beautiful blue ride it s a must have for all soundtrack aficionados. Amadeus on The Nile also have stellar performances of several top musicians like guitarist Gregg Arreguin (who played with Seal, k.d lang and Jon Hassell) and famed Cuban percussionist Louis Conte and more, it s quite a find and by far exceeds all expectations!

Pass On This One.......2007-02-10

First off let me start by stating that Kenneth Alford, non de plume for Major Ricketts, is one the finest writers of the march even possibly besting our own Sousa. That said this particular album is of very poor quality especially the mix! Being a professional tubist I certainly enjoy hearing a strong low brass section the problem here is that it sounds like a tuba solo with band accompliment. Alford certainly knew how to write for the lower brass section and the tuba parts were not your a typical omp-pa-pa lines but melodical with wonderful counter melodies for tuba and all the lower brass. This is good fair to get to know Alford's music but not one for good listening.

Alford marches are wonderful - there is no way to sit still through one. It is great to have an All-Alford CD. If you love marching band music, but don't know Kenneth Alford, grab this collection and start tapping your toes.

What Sousa has been to the Armed Forces of the United States,Alford has been and is to those of Great Britain and the Commonwealth--particularly to the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines.

Thanks to "The Bridge on the River Kwai" there are few American listeners who are not familiar with "Colonel Bogey"but when I think of Alford it is always "Standard of St. George"that comes to mind. How many mornings did I stand in the cold of a Nova Scotia morning in front of the Guard and Band of the training establishment Her Majesty's Canadian Ship "Cornwallis", shivering in my black patent leather gaiters,my sword frozen in a death grip, waiting for the command to "March on the Guard and Band!".

"Aye,aye, Sir!" "Guard and Band , Right Turn! By the Left, Quick March!"And those magnificent opening bars of "Standard" shattering the cold as we set off to assemble at the foot of the mast to perform the centuries-old ceremony of raising the White
Ensign- the very standard for which Alford had written the march!

We will not see those days again!

Probably one of the finest military Bands in the world! Don't expect an American, German, or French band when you order this one. This is a classic British military band. Enjoy!

I must take exception to the previous reviewer's comments and really wonder about the quality of their sound reproduction equipment. The quality of the winds is excellent and the soaring countermelodies of the baritones are inspiring. The sound of a British military band is much different than the average American ear is used to. This is truly an album to be included in the musical library of march fans everywhere.

Tepid performance.......2004-04-12

This recording has wonderful, clear sound quality, but the performances, and especially the conducting, are not up to par. Jessye Norman sings everything beautifully with rich tone, and sounds magnificent in her two arias, but she is a lifeless Aïda. She pastes on Aïda's emotions. Her portrayal is too shallow. She sang this performance when she was still a lirico-spinto, and not yet a full-blown dramatic soprano. Her soft high notes are pretty, but hardly breathtaking and she cuts some forte high notes short, like the high B-flat on the word "Ah!" in "Ritorna vincitor". Pedro Lavirgen is a squillo-less Radamès. At least he puts a little more emotion into his singing than Norman does. His "Celeste Aïda" is surprisingly effective and well sung. His high notes are secure, but he shamelessly milks "Sacerdote, io resto a te" by holding on to one of the high G's for an inordinately long amount of time. Fiorenza Cossotto is in great voice, but very surprising for her, she is very subdued in this performance. She is not dull by any other mezzo's standards, but she is dull by her own standards. Her Judgement Scene with the priests is not included in this highlights CD. Her high notes are rock-solid, which at least partially makes up for her less-than-total dramatic commitment. The baritone who sings Aïda's father is serviceable, but by no means memorable. The conducting of Nino Sanzogno is lifeless. He uses the same, moderate tempo for every scene. When the tempo should speed up and be dramatic, like at the end of the Amneris/Radamès duet, he lets the tempo drag. Some of the brass playing is less than spectacular, the mentioned duet being an example. The trumpet playing in the Triumphal March is mediocre; many of the notes sound like they are about to crack. The sound, as mentioned earlier, is superb. There is no audience noise except for applause, and no tape hiss. The orchestra and soloists could have been miked a bit closer, but they are very audible throughout.

This recording could have been great, but an atmosphere of lethargy pervades it, with Sanzogno's conducting being particularly dead.

Wonderful Perfromance.......2000-01-06

As a Jessye fan, I was very excited to come across this recording. It's a live performance. with excellent recording quality, and the performance is fantastic. Cosotto as Amneris is simply electric, and the rest of the cast is superb. One or two flat notes do not mar my respect for jessye's interpretation, but could explain why this was not recorded by a major label.
