Album Description

DJ Food and DK, the current main movers of the long running and much-loved "Solid Steel" radio show and club night, have laid down a dizzying, kaleidoscopic pile-up of musical styles and spoken word eclectica, all pieced together, layered and re-treated with the sort of attention to detail that only comes from nerdy obsession and music collections that need reinforced floor supports to be held safely.

5 out of 5 stars Nice..........2007-07-14

Well, when I saw that this album had zero reviews yet I just couldn't resist. I've passed through the first couple listens and have been very happy. This is a follow up to an album that not only gave me sonic fodder for about six months, introduced me to the world of DJ mixes, and alienated me from alot of my friends who were into much more "normal" artists... It was the album that single handedly redefined the way I saw music. Obviously I had high expectations and was very anxious about hearing it.
This album lacks some of the quirkiness found on the original Now Listen! It is also a much faster paced/dance-ish album. I guess to me the original Now Listen! was a hip hop mix and this is a dance mix. Ultimately it is well worth the investment, and a great mix for anyone who is interested in an album that will take them for an exciting musical adventure through time and space.
If you don't know the original, it is a bunch of songs from various genres mashed up with a bunch of samples and scratching... cool stuff, hard to describe. This is the same way, just tweaked a bit.

1 out of 5 stars What are they listening to?.......2006-06-20

I don't know what the other reviewers have been listening to but it can't be the cd I just got. It is a dreadful, limp, dated piece of prog-jazz fusion. While 801 Live is highly recommended you can best avoid this turkey.

5 out of 5 stars A blue-ink kiss ain't here above.......2005-01-20

I'm lucky enough to have access to a large college record library. And I listened to this on the recommendation of Steve Maravetz, whom I ordinarily hate cause he's a Springsteen fan. The stand-out track is POSTCARD LOVE--which just might be the single greatest piece of music since ... oh ... I'd have to go back to Kenny Rogers in his prime. Bill MacCormick told me that he wrote the melody and that Manzanera wrote the backing track. One line goes: "Postcard scenes of sun and sand and smart hotels where palm trees grow, stretch out, and warm this tired old town." I love the cadence of that. My favorite part of POSTCARD LOVE is the final instrumental passage. A passage which is also heard near the beginning, right after the low-volume high-pitched spectral sonics of Phil's guitar. Said passage can't help but strike me as a musical metaphor for the brutal unstoppable lurch of time. There's one dud track. THAT FALLING FEELING contains a dull & ugly melody. With a dull & ham-fisted bit of harmonic singing.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless, Political Prog-Rock.......2004-12-05

From the opening lines of this album, it prophetically breathes the current state of the nation. The title cut, "Listen Now" is peppered with lyrics that ring as true today as when penned in 1977.

Thunder rolling down out of dried-up skies
Every inch of earth crying out for water
Television man spelling out the price
Everywhere the sheep creeping the slaughter
Cold weather coming, people feel the fire
Living on Dead End Street with no desire

Is it any wonder you've got no power
When you pay a thief to keep it for you?
Is it a surprise that your wine is sour
When you let a liar choose the brew he pours you?
Talk on the wire about force and choice
It's uncomfortable to raise your voice

Everybody whispering behind their hand
Selling their despair to any stronger man
Don't have to listen now

Phil Manzanera, backed by a fine lineup of studio musicians, as noted elsewhere, turn this 8-minute cut alone into a classic prog-rock mini-opera.

In the 2000 U.S. prez election, Bush carried the nation with a popular vote of 50 million; in 2004, 60 million. Manzanera's next lyrics in Listen Now:

We taught ourselves to trust our heads
It's getting us nowhere
If fifty-five million hearts can't feel it
We'll never know where

If some of the lyrics of the remaining cuts trend toward standard prog-rock of the time, they can be forgiven, given the era. One instrumental cut, "Island" is warmly reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac's "Sunny Side of Heaven" from 1972. Other notable cuts include "City of Light" whose melody stuck in my head for 20 years, between first hearing it on vinyl and finding the CD, is presages lyrics from Genesis' "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" which didn't release until 1974.

In the end, my mind returns to the closing verses from the title cut, continuing to resonate with today's headlines:

Polish up your silver and hide your gold
Send the lookout man down to every corner
Gather in the place where it's bought and sold
Next to where you once used to be a learner
Cold weather coming, people feel the fire
Living on Dead End Street with no desire
You gotta listen now

Is anybody listening......?

5 out of 5 stars The other reviewers have it right, but ..........2004-03-26

I just can't help but add my two cents' worth on how important this recording is. If for no other reason than the stellar, open production of this classic, you should hear how someone who's definitely NOT a musical household name puts together a brilliant set of tunes with a brilliant set of musicians in brilliant arrangments and then records it brilliantly. Is this enough? Sure. Buy the record and hear for yourself one of the reasons why Roxy Music influenced so much of today's younger talent. Manzanera's playing is, to me, at its best on this album. Like Dizzy Gillespie said about Miles Davis, "Man, it's not about the notes he play, it's about the notes he DON'T play."

4 out of 5 stars Listen now, later, or whenever---just listen.......2001-09-06

Any completist or progressive rock fan will want to investigate the "solo" recordings of Phil Manzanera, the sublime guitarist best known for his work with Roxy Music.

This recording, a bit dated now in some of its conventions, is still a good one either for focused listening via the headphones or for cranking up on solo trips. After his stunning solo debut "Diamond Head" snaked its way to the top of the British music charts, Manzanera assembled another all-star set of crack musicians to deliver this sometimes paranoid glimpse into a world gone mad.

"Listen Now," the title track, telegraphs the plotline of a sci-fi movie or novel against a sinister-sounding bass-drum line. "Flight 19" crackles with excitement as Manzanera proves again why he is one of the top ten rock guitarists. "Law and Order" recounts a world where freedom has been surrendered for safety, asking the same tough questions on many lips since September 11, 2001. "Island" and "Postcard Love" represent the more ethereal side of things.

Bill and Ian MacCormick provide solid support as both players and songwriters, Eno and his replacement in Roxy Music, Eddie Jobson, are both on-board, as are Tim Finn and Eddie Rayner from Spitz Enz, the great New Zealand band that later morphed into the superb Crowded House. Super session players like Simon Phillips and Dave Mattacks on drums, Frances Monkman on keyboards, and the ubiquitous Mel Collins on reeds plus Creme and Godley (former 10cc brain trust) and you have one stellar lineup.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Shakin' Stevens "Now Listen".......2007-07-08

This is a very good Release for Shakin' Stevens. He still has what it takes. The title song rates right up there with his other hits. He also does a good cover of the other hits.

I'm from Bombay,India.. and a big Shakin'Stevens fan & was eager to know what happened to him, since he did not release any new album.. he's back with NOW LISTEN and i must say the Shaky magic still exits.. I would like him to release albums more frequently and go on tours to places like Bombay, Dubai, etc .. he should release a duet album of classic rock n roll tracks, plus new material...I like all the songs on this album i did'nt give it 5 stars because..i was hoping to hear a couple of the old shaky style tracks...

for those who have'nt heard Shakin Stevens, I suggest you buy his Greatest hits album first.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars skip tracks 1-9.......2007-05-11

to my dismay tracks 1-9 are ALL fairly generic rap by numbers (aka C-rap). As I'm a father of three now it's pretty silly for me to drive around booming out drivel about being a hard mumma and carrying a glock and all that. However track 10's ska beat Mirror in the Bathroom is just ace (is "let me take you to a restaurant that has glass tables, you can watch yourself while you are eating" the best lyric ever?) and starts off a rather nice eclectic mix of tracks that's great to drive to......

5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE CD.......2006-05-08

This CD was pretty much my introduction into the world of Solid Steel/Ninja Tune, and it is just good. I don't really know what to say. It keeps a moderately fast pace until the end where it slows down a bit. I have been getting all the songs that this CD is made up of, and it is kind of bizarre for me to hear how little acctual composition was done by DJ FOOD and DK, but the mix is phenomenal. These guys really prove that mixing songs is an art. If you want a great hip hop CD with excellent music and beats, just buy it. This is the sort of album that can completely change your perceptions of what music is and what it should be.

4 out of 5 stars Another solid mix by Ninja Tune.......2005-02-28

Ninja Tune has been churning out some of the most playful and creative electronic music for years, and DJ Food is up there with Coldcut, Amon Tobin and Funki Porcini on my short list of the label's best talent.

"Now, Listen!" wasn't what I expected. I'd been following DJ Food since "A Recipe for Disaster" up through "Kaleidoscope" and I've got maybe 12 Ninja Tune releases, so I figured that "Now, Listen!" would offer more of the same - bizarre deconstructed jazz, hip hop beats, some jungle rhythms, weird samples, etc. Instead, this release starts off heavy on the hip hop with (heavily remixed) tracks by Jeru the Damaja and X-ecutioners. Not bad, but not really what attracted me to DJ Food or the label.

The disc really hits stride about midway with a brilliant mix of "Mirror in the Bathroom" by the Beat with a hard drum n' bass beat - I actually like this version more than the original (and the Beat is one of my favorite bands). From this point on, we get a nice heavy chunk of danceable house and funk; highlights include "Lucy's Song" by Flying Fish and "House of Mirrors" by David McCallum. The album veers off into spacier, ambient terrain, closing with tracks by Herbie Hancock, Art of Noise and Boards of Canada (among others).

Like a lot of continuous mix CDs, "Now, Listen!" has its highs and lows - I'm not too keen on the by-the-numbers hip hop intro, and after the nirvana of the middle act it seems a little anticlimactic to fade out on such a mellow note. Still, few records have highs this high, and I find myself replaying the disc (from Track 10 - I can't say enough about this version of "Mirror in the Bathroom!") over and over and over again ...

I would give this five stars, except that "Now, Listen!" doesn't feature a single Ninja Tune track! Maybe I got spoiled by earlier label releases, but it's a bit of a downer that DJ Food couldn't find room for a single track from a label that boasts Tobin, Porcini, the Herbaliser, Up Bustle and Out, and so many other great artists. Especially since the liner notes explain that this disc wasn't actually recorded live.

The standard-bearer in my opinion is still "Cold Krush Cuts" - two 70+ minute continuous mixes of the Ninja catalogue by DJ Krush (on one side) and Coldcut (on the other). That still is the BEST collection of its kind that I've ever heard - this one is merely EXCELLENT. FYI - If you're curious, the Amon Tobin Solid Steel entry is a tremendous letdown - I'd recommend "Cold Krush Cuts" (obviously) or "Funkungfusion" (a 2-CD Ninja Comp) over that.

Very good mix; but probably not the best introduction to a great label.

5 out of 5 stars The brilliance of the "Solid Steel" series, started here...........2003-10-30

Dj Food (aka PC and Strictly Kev) have long since been one of the most gifted artists on the `Ninja Tune' label, churning out a consistently excellent line of albums, to give them one of the best track records on their label. So giving them the chance create a wildly eclectic Mix album seems like a good idea. And the Results???....Incredible, Astonishing, tremendous...and a exceptionally realised project. "Mr Scruff/Boards of Canada/Dj Vadim/Four Tet/Cinematic Orchestra & The X-Ecutioners all make it onto the album, blending `Trip-Hop/Dance/Breaks/Soul-Funk/Electronica & everything in-between so seamlessly that you wonder why they don't just commit themselves to this sort of thing full-time!!!??, regardless some tracks stand out so brilliantly that they should be released as singles....Ska-Funksters `The Beat - Mirror in the Bathroom' being mixed with an early `Roni Size' D&B track....'Most Wanted's' sunshine Funk/Hip-hop hybrid "Calm Down". But the most staggering musical achievement award goes to `Blackalicious' for the sheer mind-boggling brilliance of "Alphabet Aerobic's" which is possibly one of the most staggering rap Tracks ever made...an truly astounding Mix Album, that rates favourably with "Coldcut's - Journeys By Dj : 70 Minutes of madness".

4 out of 5 stars . . . . a masterpiece . . . ........2003-01-03

a masterpiece . . . . any Hip-Hop, turntablist or general music fan must own.

4 out of 5 stars A garage band with roots.......2007-02-21

This is a band that has done their homework. To me - at least - a lot of todays so called "Garage Bands" sound like they listened to a couple of cds from 60's &/or 80's new wave bands, they just don't have much bases to draw from. The Charms sound like a band that really loves this kind of music.

cdbaby has new copyies the bands 3 CDs.

5 out of 5 stars The Charms grow up.......2006-04-20

On their third release the Charms put it all together. There is simply not a bad song on this cd. It stands up to...no, it REQUIRES repeated playings!! The song writing is excellent-lyrically and musically. The distintive farfisa is still there but guitar player Joe Wizda steals the show-nothing flashy, but a brilliant rocking presence throughout. Singer Ellie Vee has found her voice and what a voice it is, sexy and sultry or peeling the paint off your walls. "Red cherry lips-that's what I talk about you with" is the opening line of the disc and from there it jsut gets better....you won't be disappointed if you buy this cd!

      4 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-05-16

First of all, I only gave this four stars because I expect something even more mind-blowing from this band later. Well, I had heard this band's demo songs and was very impressed. They seemed to have a lot of potential but I wasn's sure about them until I read some positive reviews on here. The very first song catches your ear very quickly with a lot of KoRn influence. You can also here influences from many other bands within Pile of Heads. But, the real standout here is the vocal range and obscurity of the singer, SmAtH. He blew me away on this album. From the crunchy-riffed beggining of "What We Feed Off" to the heartfelt "J.W.D.S." this album is full of potential. My favorite songs are the first five on the album, but out of those I like "The Bomb" best. You have to add this album to your collection, these guys will be big!

5 out of 5 stars This album is a must have!!.......2005-01-22

From the band that brought us "War", "Unleash", and "So Much Hate" comes the first full length cd....and it is worth every penny! This album will never leave your cd player once you have it. With songs as hard hitting as Saved and Perfect Way To Die you will be aching to get in the pit! Pile of Heads is everything a band should be... killer guitar riffs, heavy drums, intricate beats, powerful lyrics enhanced by the incredible range of the singer, SmAth. This is one band that deserves some national attention! This cd should be in your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Good, Heavy, New Band........2004-12-14

If you like the underground seen, enjoy finding a band that kicks a$$, and a one that of your friends have probably not heard of, then check this band out. The genre falls into the newer metal sound. One of the singers influences is Mike Patton (Singer of faith no more). However, When I listen to this, two bands stand out to compare this band to: "Mushroomhead" and "Apartment 26" I also think I notice splashes and dashes of Slipknot, The Used, Static-x, Chavelle, Killgore, and Paparoach (even though some of these bands are not as heavy as pile of head) So if you wants something cutting edge, heavy, hints of digital, and just about every other genre of music, then you will probably like this
