Amazon.com

A brave effort at cramming one disc full of Temptations classics, The Ultimate Collection nevertheless makes a couple of puzzling choices. Why, for instance, include "Error of Our Ways," a very minor mid-'90s hit, and ignore "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" or "I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)," both number ones from their classic period? Still, for the price, it's hard to argue with. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Sound is not as good as I had hoped for, but it has everything I wanted on it.......2007-07-05

I dislike any title "Ultimate" because ultimate really is in the ear of the listener, but this CD had everything I wanted from the Temptations on it. It only lost one star because it's touchy working in my MacIntosh and the sound quality in general is not as good as I hoped for.

2 out of 5 stars Poor .......2007-06-01

I'm only a passing fan of The Temps, but wanted at least a "Greatest Hits" CD in my collection so they would have some representation.

While (most) of the songs I know and like are on the disc, the sound quality is abysmal... unless you want to hear it like it was on that mono transister radio you had back in 1971. As far as I can tell, there was no remastering done whatsoever. A disappointment.

1 out of 5 stars hearing is believing.......2007-05-12

customers lose faith in vendors when they deliver defective merchandise. The CD would not perform in any player used. Vendors must earn a customer's trust by supplying reliable quality in the first place or standing up with ready replacements when they don't. This vendor did neither.

5 out of 5 stars Oldies But Goodies.......2007-01-09

This CD is awesome! It contains most of their hit songs from back in the day! I recommend this CD to anyone who likes The Temptations.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best.......2006-11-10

The Temptations were Motown and this CD has their biggest hits and some that I had never heard before. Now I can say that I love everything the Temps did. The talent and voices are like majic. Otis Williams sure knew what he was doing when he put this group together.

Amazon.com essential recording

The Temptations have long had the reputation for being able to out-sing, out-dress, and out-dance any vocal group in sight. Their earliest hits featured either the grits-and-gravy stylings of David Ruffin ("My Girl," "I Wish It Would Rain") or the gossamer falsetto of Eddie Kendricks ("The Way You Do the Things You Do," "You're My Everything"). Replacing Ruffin with Dennis Edwards, the group went to a five-lead-voices concept ("Cloud Nine," "I Can't Get Next to You," "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone") that kept them in hits for another two decades. This 46-song, 2 CD set sports every one of these classics, an incredible live! version of "Ol' Man River," the seriously funky &quo;Shakey Ground," the Rick James-assisted "Standing on the Top," and many, many magical musical moments more. Bassman Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, and the unrelated Otis Williams were the other key members . Recommended reading: Temptations by Otis Williams with Patricia Romanowski (Putman, 1988) and Deliver Us from Temptation by Tony Turner with Barbara Aria (Thunder's Mouth Press, 1992). --Don Waller

5 out of 5 stars Top class stuff.......2007-03-04

My copy of this CD arrived damaged and so I had to order a slightly different version rather urgently from somewhere else. I'd still like to review it though.

I wanted to get this CD after hearing the song "Ball Of Confusion (That's What The World Is Today)" being used to promote (the then upcoming) Season 4 of HBO's "The Wire". Check out these lyrics: "People moving out, people moving in (Why?)/ Because of the colour of their skin/ Run, run, run but you sure can't hide/ An eye of an eye, a tooth for a tooth/ Vote for me and I'll set you free!/ The only person talkin' about love, my brother, is the preacher/ And it seems nobody's interested in learnin' but the teacher."

The producers of that show are incredibly smart. I'm sure any fan of "The Wire" will agree that those few lines capture the current season of the show perfectly, almost as if the song was written for it. Or as if they wrote the show around the song.

Of course neither is the case; the use of the song simply came about as the result of good researching, and The Temptations probably don't need any introduction anyway. Alongside other male vocal groups like the O'Jays, The Four Tops, The Jackson 5/The Jacksons, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles and even The Commodores, these dudes were the soundtrack to the 60s and 70s, and the soundtrack to my generation's youth. They don't make them like this anymore.

All the hits are here; tunes like "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone", "My Girl", "Get Ready", "Just My Imagination" and "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" (with Diana Ross & The Supremes) among more recent ones like "Treat Her Like A Lady". And of course, "Ball Of Confusion". Over 40 songs and not a dud to be found anywhere. They certainly don't make them like this anymore.

This is one of those CDs I put on and find difficult to stop even if I'm late for an appointment somewhere. I'm playing it in the car and I get to where I want to go and I don't want to get out, at least, not until the song I'm listening to has finished. This is top class stuff. The best Temptations collection around today.

Right on, brothers!

5 out of 5 stars Is Temptation a sin then iam guilty........2006-01-26

First let me address the Mono issue which is an issue for some people. My music sytem is so sophisticated it takes Mono and split it into multichannel stereo sound.Motown used the original master tapes, the result is nothing short of breathtaking. Finally, as far as the collection is concern this is and will always be the best Anthology ever created.I will venture to recommend the Michael Jackson Anthology created by the same people with absolutely amazing sound quality.

5 out of 5 stars I've got sunshine on a cloudy day!.......2005-08-18

The Temptations are my favorite band of all time. Their music is just fantastic. Even though I am only 17 but I love their music. I wish I was born when they were performing classics like "My Girl" "Since I lost my Baby" and the timeless ballad "My Imagination. Too bad this CD is out of print. This is definitly one of the best greatest hits collection amazon has on sale.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation.......2005-08-10

This is the best compilation of the Temptations music on the market today. It has almost forty of their greatest and most memorable hits. Disc has mostly there sweet love songs and ballads, while David Ruffin was apart of the group. Disc two has some of their more disco sounds and music from the 70's after Dennis joined them. I've always been a fan of the Temptations and I find listening to this cd a joy.

3 out of 5 stars Mono?!?!!?.......2005-05-23

I realize that posting a review of anything less than five stars seems not only sacrilege, but will also subject me to "not helpful" ratings - anyone wandering upon this title will be predisposed to wanting to like it, but .... wow, Glenn Johnson's review here hit this nail on the head!!! Reviewing the track listing is a joy, but listening to the mono mixes, knowing that pristine stereo mixes of these Funk Brothers tracks exist, is so frustrating as to detract from this heavenly music. Hey, I love listening to Ruffin and Kendricks and the Funk Brothers, but can't give this one a higher rating due to the ridiculous mono treatment of the early material. Some material should be heard in mono (see Phil Spector's glorious 60s productions where the stereo separation robs the sound of its overall power), but each instrument and vocal here is much better experienced for the tracks that overlap on Compact Command Performances.

5 out of 5 stars fighting temps soundtrack.......2007-01-14

this cd was off the hook! it was exactly like the movie [which i loved & watch quite often] so i could be inspired whether working or playing. ALL of the artists were great in their own rights. i just can't get enough of their wonderful songs & lyrics. ALL of the music was done so well and is truly inspirational!!! thanks for making this one available for musical [movies/plays] lovers like myself. this was well worth the money spent. thanks much...

5 out of 5 stars It was a case of love at first bar!.......2006-12-17

I was actually watching the film for this when I got hooked on it ... so I went to the website, listened to some sample tracks and decided it would be a good buy.

It was.

5 out of 5 stars Very Very Good.......2006-11-03

I listen to this product alsmost everyday. And amazon sent it very fast. Short and sweet I know.

5 out of 5 stars Just great music!.......2006-01-13

This music is a blessing for my heart and my ears. I can't remember enjoying a soundtrack that much since "The Preacher's Wife" was released. Sure, "The Fighting Temptations" is musically much more up-to-date. There is some traditional gospel like Shirley Caesar's and Ann Nesby's songs and great contemporary gospel by Beyonce, Angie Stone and the others. There is also some great so-called secular stuff. In fact, there isn't a song I wouldn't enjoy. The album is really uplifting. I can't get enough of this music ;-)
And the film ... well, it's just a simple story about essential things: what it means to be a Christian, what Christianity is really about and how great it is to give glory to God.
Both the film and the soundtrack are higly recommended, to my mind.

4 out of 5 stars This is a really good fun catchy album.......2005-11-19

especially if you saw the movie, you can visualize the song performances which were great, with Cuba's hilariously frenetic thrashing about (directing) through every performance. Its got great inspiring Gospel mixed with some good ol fashioned devils music.

In Motown hierarchies, the Temptations occupied pretty much the same exalted place at the legendary label as the Lincoln division did at Ford; both had a marquee reputation for class and quality that endured time and trend for decades. The group was also a tribute to the glorious possibilities of an erstwhile assembly line: the early hits here (including the signature song that gives this 36-track, double-disc anthology its name) were penned by fellow legend Smokey Robinson, supervised by label founder Berry Gordy, and backed by one of music's greatest house bands. But even as Robinson's role segued into Norman Whitfield's as the 1960s rolled into the '70s, and as David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks left the group for solo careers--echoing the splintering of their superstar label counterparts the Supremes--the Temptations' juggernaut rolled on through a rich series of hits that were by turns traditional ("Just My Imagination"), timely ("Ball of Confusion"), and hard-edged ("Papa Was a Rolling Stone"). But if the hit Motown sound they so long personified became displaced by waves of funk and middle-of-the-road music on the R&B charts, the Tempts adapted remarkably well, scoring hits like the P-Funk collaboration "Shakey Ground," 1984's "Treat Her Like a Lady," and 1998's million-seller "Stay," the last cut nearly 40 years after the band's first Motown session. This collection chronicles their journey across several disparate epochs of soul music history, and includes a concise historical note for each song, as well as track-by-track commentary from founding Temptations member Otis Williams. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars A less expensive version is available........2007-04-27

The track listing and features for My Girl: The Very Best...is the exact same as the Temptations Gold album. Only, Gold is a few dollars cheaper. Get that one and save yourself some money. This is very odd for the same album to be packaged two different ways.

As far as the music: it's the Temptations and the music is really good. The latter end of the second cd lags due to the unmistakable and dated 80s sound.

I'll give a more in depth review for the Gold album. I just wanted to warn people this is a more expensive version of an album that already exists.

5 out of 5 stars It don't get better than this.......2007-01-14

This is a classic that everybody should have. The music and performance will take you back to a time when artist had to have talent, and this CD is abundant with this. Motown classic

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect .......2006-12-28

I'm only a casual fan of Motown music but the Temptations are by far my favorite Motown group. I got this CD to replace my 1985 Command Performances 17 Greatest Hits CD and this collection does not disappoint.

The highlights for me are the cleaner, stronger bass sound on my favorite Temp song - "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone." The remastered sound on this alone is worth the price of this CD. Also, "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" has never sounded better. All the early songs are in stereo (or semi-stereo) which is great. I also appreciate the liner notes about each song by the remaining original member, Otis Williams.

I have only a few complaints. First, Disk 1 is only 58 minutes and could have used a few more of their early songs. One I wish was on it is "Girl (Why You Wanna Make Me Blue)" (it's on the Command Performances CD). Not my favorite but a good song that should be on this collection. Disk 2 is a healthy 75 minutes - but I am not as excited about the songs recorded after 1973, so the last few songs on this CD seem like filler.

My second complaint is that for someone like me that did not follow this group closely, it would have been nice if the liner notes would have indicated who the lead singer was on each song but they do not.

Third, for most of the songs, the remastered sound is superior to the Command Performances CD. But on some songs, like the fabulous "I Could Never Love Another", the remastered violins (or should I say strings)seem to dominate too much. The Command Performance version of this song has a better blend. I'm not too crazy about the strings that were on most of these old Motown songs anyway. It would be interesting to hear them with the strings removed.

But these are minor complaints and all in all this is a great collection by an incredible group.

5 out of 5 stars "Just my imagination {runnnin away with me}"?.......2006-12-11

I recently watched part of the movie on MTV and was so impressed by the acting and singing that I bought the movie.
Watching the movie brought back alot of memories. My pal Louie was a HUGE fan.I was more of a psychedelic rock guy.My how times do change.
I first bought some other Temps cd of 16 recordings which were not original . So I bought this here and WHOAH. I am now a HUGE fan. The talent of these guys was truly inspired. The attention to detail ,the lyrics ,the sheer romantic intensity of the love songs and the social commentary of some of the others is still relevant today. The high pitched voice of David and the boss tone quality of Melvin with the other's each having a pivotal role is exhilirating. What a pleasure to hear and reknow this class act.Bet my pal Louie is harmonizing with Paul, Al ,Melvin,,Eddie,Dave and the rest right now. Or is it :"Just my imagination {runnning away with me}"?

If you want only one Temptations cd in your collection, than this is the on to get. This two disc set has it all. Every major hit the band had, remastered with fantastic sound, accompanied by a fantastic booklet with commentary on each song by original member Otis Williams. "My Girl", "Ain't Too Proud To Beg", "I Can't Get Next To You", "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)", "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" and every other classic hit is on here. This is by far the one to get.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE ONE TO GET........2006-09-19

Most audiophiles are aware that Motown has mostly a mess for original tapes. There are also many monoaural tracks peddled on too many 'greatest hits' compilations. More to the point: this is the best Temptations CD I have heard -- better than Compact Command Performance.

It sounds as thought some tracks are the 'electronically rechanneled for stereo listening" versions. But, hey, ... what are you gonna do? You want Temps or not?

It also seems through my old Sony V900 headphones that they went too heavy on the bass. If you have Cooledit, or something similar, you may wish to use it on these tracks.

All considered, I can tell you I was in high school when Cloud Nine came out, and I am really enjoying listening to all of these cuts!

This is the one to get, alright.

4 out of 5 stars 5 stars minus 1 for redundancy.......2005-05-11

Definitely 5-star material, performances, and sound quality, but this is a complete clone of the recent "My Girl : The Best of..." anthology. It all comes down to packaging, and therefore the nod goes to "My Girl" for its ample track-by-track notes and commentary by original Tempt Otis Williams.

Will Smith makes a welcome left turn from his recent Hollywood McAction Film past in director Andy Tennant's romantic comedy. He is also the film's executive soundtrack producer, taking the opportunity to pay tribute to the R&B and soul that initially influenced his own musical career, as well as showcase its contemporary echoes. Vintage tracks represent Motown (the Temptations' classic "I Can't Get Next to You") and Philly (The O'Jays "Love Train") soul well, while the Caribbean rhythms of Jimmy Cliff's "You Can Get It," Martha Reeves' "It's Easy to Fall in Love" and Earth, Wind & Fire's pop-inflected "Reasons" testify to the old school's rich diversity. John Legend's new cover of Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" doesn't add much to the original, but other new cuts like the hip-hop/soul fusion of Heavy D and the Boyz' "Now That We Found Love," EW&F's collaboration with Kelly Rowland and Sleepy Brown ("This Is How I Feel") and Amerie's funk-charged "I Thing" offer up a tasty modern R&B groove. --Jerry McCulley

I'll be honest, I bought this disc for Amerie's "1 thing." I don't know why, but at the time, I had to have it (and even bidded on ebay for a British CD-Single! Thankfully, I lost, as it went for $26US!!) The rest of the disc is "okay." Three stars for the disc. Five stars for Amerie's "1 Thing."

I was very disappointed that the songs on this album were not a comprehensive list of the songs that I saw in the movie. It's a compilation of mediocre songs. Big disappointment.

With a couple of exceptions, the showroom- and talk-show-ready Temptations of In a Mellow Mood (1967) are handed the most impersonal, clichéd sort of standards. "Hello Young Lovers," "Try to Remember," and too many others here go through the motions of connecting with listeners but are so haplessly written that the reined-in quintet is hard-pressed to fill them with more than a thimbleful of sweat. "Somewhere" is a foolproof melody that might have made a fine change of pace on a record like With a Lot o' Soul, but this version of "Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me)" has none of the redeeming qualities of Dionne Warwick's. Paradoxically blessed with little of the class the group normally commanded, Mellow Mood stands as an expression of Berry Gordy's worst aesthetic impulses. --Rickey Wright

While I am not an expert on Motown music, I have liked most of what I've heard from The Temptations ("Just My Imagination" is my favorite"). This imaginative recording is full of rich contrasts of emotion, color and harmonies; breaths new life into mostly Broadway standards.

Leon Russell's title track had already become a modern standard recorded by everyone from the Carpenters to Willie Nelson by the time the Tempts got to it on this 1975 disc. With the number of original group members shrunken by death and departure, it no doubt held plenty of resonance for those who carried on. The record's highlight, though, is "Shakey Ground," driven by P-Funk-ers Eddie Hazel and William "Billy Bass" Nelson. What remains is thoughtful, somewhat shallow, and not up to the level of innovation Motown colleagues Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, not to mention the Tempts themselves, had reached. A good album, if one that fails to meet its goal of true significance. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars The Last GREAT Temps album..........2006-11-10

Rickey Wright got it wrong, this album is all that and a bag of chips, and a pack of Bubblelicious! 1975, I was a freshman in college and everyone was jamming to 'Shakey Ground', but I was always drawn to the "b" (ballad) side of the set; A Song for You, Memories, Firefly and I'm a Bachelor. Not a weak sister in the bunch, all prime filet. That five-part harmonizing that no one could touch was in fine, fine form. Dennis earned his "Temptations Forever" tag with this one, he put his own stank on it, beyond any of the Norman Whitfield days...for me anyway. There was nothing after this album that touched me the way this one did.

I was blessed to see the "Original" Temps; Otis, Paul, Eddie, David and Melvin at the tender age of 13 and YES they were the singin'est, steppin'est, dressin'est group out there, truly "the Emperors of Soul"...GET THIS.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS RECORD!.......2006-07-20

I think the Tempts were going through their third incarnation when this was released. This is one of those albums Cedric The Entertainer was talking about in his movie, "Johnson Family Reunion," Every song on this album is a joy. (Cedric didn't use the word "joy," but you get the picture)

My favorites are "Glasshouse," A funky, bass-driven classic, "A Song For You" & "Memories," tracks aimed straight for the heart with the lush strings, and soul-touching vocals of Dennis Edwards.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2006-03-16

I am 49 years old and I still enjoy listening to this album. Dennis Edwards voice was so strong, it was destined to be a memorable time piece.

5 out of 5 stars A SONG FOR YOU.......2006-03-01

A Song For You is a great album. Appears that some of the average rated reviewers are stuck in the My Girl era, the 60s. The album is a even balance of fast and slow tracks. The up tempo cuts are kickin, The ballads are wonderful. 5 stars!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars a childhood dream come to life.......2007-04-28

i was happy that someone somewhere took it upon themselves to re-release these two albums on cd. outside of showing off diana ross though, they have no seemingly obvious raison d'etre. she's not in her finest form on most of the cuts. but she does sizzle on 'try it, baby' and does a beautiful, sophisticated take on 'a house is not a home'.

what these cuts, as well as others, show is how underused mary wilson and cindy birdsong would be until ross left the group. they also show how ungentlemanly dennis edwards and david ruffin could be. they just push ross out of the way when the time is right and they're ready to be cock of the walk. that's the fun of this compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Two Superb Motown Groups Captured Together On Record.......2006-05-15

In 1959 Diana Ross And The Supremes and The Temptations each began singing together on street corners around the ghetto areas for blacks in Detroit. The Temptations called themselves The Primes and The Supremes were their "sister" group, The Primettes. They signed to the local Lu Pine Records in 1959 but the label folded and soon after each group signed to Motown records and each took seperate paths. However in 1968 the two super groups were reunited for a series of spectacular television specials and a host of both studio and live albums together.

Their first studio album, Diana Ross And The Supremes Join The Temptations (1968) was, perharps, their most significant outing together. The albums debut release was origanally intended to be the electric, Try It Baby. The startling mixture of Soul and Jazz encapsulated a late night blues club feel to it and featured a stunning performance from Diana Ross and Dennis Edwards. There was also an effective interlude from the deep, husky voiced Melvyrn Franklin at the opening of the track. However plans for a release as a single were soon after cancelled.

Their first single together was the exciting and totally magnificent, I'm Gonna Make You Love Me. Their is a wide range of diverse harmonies on this recording from the lush harmonies of Diana Ross to the sweet falsetto of Eddie Kendricks and effective backing support from the rest of the two groups. I'm Gonna Make You Love Me was easily their biggest success together where it quickly raced into the Top 3 Singles charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

Their fun, upbeat version of Smokey Robinson And The Miracles, I Second That Emotion was another recognised success in the U.K where it was lifted as a single and peaked at No.18 on the singles charts. However in the U.S. the glorious ballad, I'll Try Something New was lifted as a single instead and jumped into the Top 50. Again the blend of harmonies were alternated between Diana Ross and Eddie Kendricks.

The rest of the album was crammed with potential chart hits. Their is an engaging re-working of Marvin Gayes and Tammi Terrells, Ain't No Mountain High Enough. It's interesting to hear Diana Ross sing this version against a completley different musical arrangement in contrast to the more famous version she took to the top of the U.S charts in 1970 as a solo artist. Diana's smooth, soulful vocals combine well with Dennis Edwards more aggressive and forceful delivery.

This Guy's In Love With You has been frequently covered by a wide range of artists but Diana Ross and the Supremes and The Temptations make this version their own. The performances all-round are exuberant and deliciously delivered with a distinct air of sizzling sexual chemistry between Diana Ross and Melvyrn Franklin. They also do an exciting take on Funky Broadway where the combination of Dennis Edwards and Diana Ross is once again breathtaking and remarkably effective.

They each carry their version of the golden Stevie Wonder classic, A Place In The Sun with such style and finesse and make the song defintivley their own whilst encapsulating more of that familiar and distinct Motown sound is on their version of Sweet Inspiration which places no great threat to the origanal and lacks the dynamic force of the initial origanal but still is overly enduring whilst Diana Ross once again shows off her effortless flair for ballads on the sensational, Then.

The album is then led to it's final which is a startling and surprisingly effective re-working of Elvis Presley's The Impossible Dream. Beginning with a soft, sensual interlude from Diana Ross the rhythm builds to an exalting climax with both Diana and Dennid Edwards sounding utterly fantastic with their shimmering harmonies blending together beautifully.

Diana Ross And The Supremes Join The Temptations was a huge seller and was greeted with a warm and positive reception from critics. The album topped the U.K album charts whilst narrowly being beaten to the top spot in the U.S where it hit No.2. A cracking classic!

Together (1969) is a little different to the first set steering into a more raw and earthy soul sound in contrast to the more sensual first set. Together doesn't quite have the immediacy of the previous album but still carries some engaging recordings. Only trouble is it lacks origanal material which was the case with most studio albums by other Motown artists in the 1960's.

Together opens with a striking version of Marvin Gaye's Stubborn Kind Of Fellow where Diana neatly surfboards along the gloriously assembled musical arrangements whilst David Ruffin again shows off his truly dynamic and rocketing vocal power. More mellow in it's tone is another cover of a Marvin Gaye classic, I'll Be Doggone where the vocal performances all-round are more subtle and laid back.

One of the ultimate highlights of the album is the sensational, The Weight where Diana Ross in particular conveys such passion and showcases her undoubted versatility. The compelling mixture of raw, earthy and gritty soul intertwined with a Country vibe makes for a startling combination. The Weight was lifted as a single in the U.S where it merley dented the Top 50 though deserved a much higher chart position.

Their version of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrells, Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing surprisingly surpasses the quality of the origanal and had it not already been made famous by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, would have made an ideal choice for a release as a single.

Apart from the hideously out-of-tune guirtar riffage at the opening of their version of Stevie Wonders, Uptight (Everythings Alright) the song does lead into a compelling and funky little affair but falling more on the bland side was their odd, disjointed version of Mary Well's My Guy and an updating of My Girl which is combined into an uneffective medley. To be fair, Diana Ross truly ignites My Guy but The Temptations My Girl on this album pales in comparison to the magnificent origanal.

Another highlight of the album is an exciting re-working of Sing A Simple Song where each groups harmonies blend fabulously well together and makes for a rocketing combination across the raw musical arrangements which contains vast undertones of red hot and compelling funk.

Returning more to that familiar Motown sound was on an enjoyable version of For Better Or Worse where the emphasis is solely on Diana Ross' voice which she carries off beautifully where as Mary Wilson takes spotlight on a bland reading of Can't Take My Eyes Off You. Mary Wilson recorded the track as a solo and then the rest of the groups harmonies were added across the multi layered musical arrangements. If anything it's quite surprising that Mary Wilson was actually granted a solo spot considering that Berry Gordy hammered across to the public that Diana Ross was the star of the group. Mary Wilson does have something of a somewhat soft, pleasant-sounding soprano but it's clear why Diana Ross became the lead singer of The Supremes as she easily had the most diverse and distinct vocal style that really was in a class of it's own.

The album is then led to it's grand final with a stirring, soulful ballad, Why (Must We Fall In Love) which contains rocketing vocals from each singer involved though is mainly alternated between Diana Ross and Eddie Kendricks. Dramatic in it's content and exalting and compelling musically, Why (Must We Fall In Love) had monster classic written all over it but was only released as a single in the U.K in early 1970 to fill in time before Diana Ross made her grand solo debut and therefore was only a lukewarm seller, stalling within the Top 40 charts. Still, it ends the album on a triumphant note and is the ultimate highlight of the Together set.

Together didn't match the commercial or critical success of Diana Ross And The Supremes Join The Temptations but is still worthwhile with some fantastic tracks included!

4 out of 5 stars Substantial Motown Soul from Two Acts in Their Prime.......2006-01-21

This is a great collection of two full albums cut by these two Motown supergroups at the height of their fame, along with several bonus tracks, b-sides etc. It's a keeper. Motown brought in the best they had to help produce these tracks, including Otis Redding and Nicholas Ashford (of Ashford and Simpson fame),and it shows. They also picked a great collection of songs, including older Motown classics and the great duet "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me." I especially love Mary Wilson's great vocal on "This Guy's In Love With You," and the poignant version of "A Place in the Sun."

The second cd finds the Temps on the verge of their Norm Whitfield "psychedelic soul" excursion, and perhaps they were testing this out a bit with some funky tunes, including a wild version of The Band's "The Weight."

In all, a great re-release and a substantial addition to the canon of these two great bands. If you like this, you may want to pick up the video for their NBC special which immediately preceded this release, T.C.B. A lot of fun for Motown lovers.

4 out of 5 stars It's Hot!.......2005-10-20

I just love this album! I'm glad that is was put together! Classic Motwon at it's best! I'm only 20 years old and I love all Motown music!

2 out of 5 stars Perspective, people.......2005-05-18

The Supremes were great. The Temptations were great. This review is not a knock on either of them. Together, they recorded a handful of decent tracks. But this 2-disc package, though reasonably priced, is a needlessly padded expansion of two not-very-good albums. If you don't have at least a good hits compilation of each of these legendary acts, don't start with this. Each album (which represents the bulk of it's respective disc) has loads of filler (some of it bland, MOR stuff). Of the bonus tracks, many of them (the majority on disc two, in fact) are simply alternate mixes of album tracks that will thrill only the hardcore.

Most of these recordings are far from terrible, and some are very good. But it's not as good as you might expect if you are a fan of these two groups and Motown in general.

The Temptations that made For Lovers Only in 1995 were far from the group that stormed the charts in the '60s and '70s--only baritone Otis Williams remained from the original lineup (he gets all of one lead vocal here), and they were still shaken by the recent death of founding bass man Melvin Franklin. So they went back to first principles--the radiant close harmonies, each voice leaning on the others, that have been their secret weapon from the beginning--and beyond, to pop standards of the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. The album's synthy instrumental arrangements already sound dated (especially a G-funk take on "Time After Time"), despite respectful cameos from Milt Jackson and Stevie Wonder. But the singing (most of the leads are handled by Ali-Ollie Woodson and Ron Tyson, who both joined in the '80s) is splendid: rough-edged and vulnerable, audibly taking refuge in standards like "Night and Day," recasting familiar lyrics about romance as wrenching eulogies. This reissue adds a remix of "Night and Day" that originally appeared on the What Women Want soundtrack to the original track listing as well as new liner notes. --Douglas Wolk

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Temptin'?.....No, SMOKIN'!!.......2007-05-20

Sounds as fresh today as it did when the original was released back in 1995. Having their version of Night and Day included in the What Women Want movie was a good move, and should have helped them reach a wider audience. As a body of work, this must be amongst the best ever to come out of Motown, by any of their artists, and that should speak volumes. The arrangements and singing on these timeless standards will make your musical moments special, whatever your setting happens to be, cruising, chilling at home, getting your teeth pulled, (LOL)whatever. Don't be fooled as you look at the songs on offer because even if you've heard some of them, you haven't heard them like this.

5 out of 5 stars This Cd is a must have for Romantic music lovers........2007-05-07

This CD is wonderful. I enjoy it so much. I heard Night and Day on the soundtrack of What Women Want and had to have it. Thanks again Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars FOR LOVERS ONLY.......2007-01-10

I like the cd and was happy to find it via Amazon because it was not available in the local music stores; however, I was not pleased with the delivery. I requested and paid for over night delivery service but it took four days for my order to be delivered and my account was not reimbursed for the fee for overnight delivery.
