He's naked! On Matthew, Kool Keith of Ultramagnetic MCs fame removes all of the capes, masks, plastic Elvis wigs, and warped rap personas (Dr. Octagon, Dr. Dooom, Big Willy Smith) he's recorded under over the years. Unfortunately, this one-time psychiatric patient is at his best when his rhymes and beats are completely out in left field. On this nonconcept album, his "music industry sucks" manifesto is disappointingly unoriginal. On "27 Shots" Keith issues a challenge to dumb groupies, dumber MCs, and Keith wannabes. Likewise, on "Baddest MC" he rambles on about the lack of individuality in the music industry, dissing male rappers who are so soft they "wear leg warmers and tights." He manages to keep it somewhat surreal on "I Don't Believe You," where he flaunts his patented unconventional rhyme scheme. But Matthew lacks the futuristic beat constructions that highlighted Keith's earlier works, such as Black Elvis/Lost in Space. Keith's blinding vitriol against the rap industry has prevented him from crafting an interesting album. He obviously should have focused more attention on these lackluster beats and rhymes. --Dalton Higgins

Sounding like the confident, ambitious superstars they already are in their native UK, Muse follows up their breakthrough Absolution with an album that tempers the trio's unabashed grandiosity and apocalyptic obsessions with a smart pop groove. The minimalist angst of the opening "Take A Bow" may bridge the goth-pop conceits of the collection's successful predecessor, but those expectations are quickly kicked aside by "Starlight"'s synth-pop bliss, the falsettoed, space-disco thump of "Supermassive Black Hole" and the chilly, New Wave redux sheen of "Map of the Problematic"; so much for being held hostage to those early Radiohead comparisons. Indeed, on the lilting "Soldier's Poem" vocalist Matthew Bellamy cannily channels Freddie Mercury while "Assassin" pulses with the familiar metallic nerve and lyrical dread of Muse past. But by the time "Knights of Cydonia" erupts in a wrenching, melodramatic climax that somehow fuses ELP, Davie Allan, Procul Harum and Chris Isaak with enough giddy abandon to suspend disbelief, Muse have long since proved their case as genre-be-damned rock world-beaters. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

In 2004, U.K. favorite Muse broke through in the U.S. with Absolution and major performances across America that won legions of new fans. In 2006, Muse takes a bold new step with Black Holes And Revelations, a powerful, upbeat epic album that takes the band's music to a whole dimension. Once again co-produced by Rich Costey (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave), Muse incorporates influences from electronica and Prince to pure pop. The album is sure to be a revelation to those still unfamiliar with the 2005 Brit award winner for Best Live Act who headlines this summer's Reading and Leeds festivals.

1 out of 5 stars Put This In A Black Hole.......2007-07-17

I bought this album because I went to a lyric site and their lyrics for a song on Absolution were insightful. Once I received the album I was consumed with disappointment. This world is suffering from the disease of delusion, religion is the opiate of the masses, and it is more destructive than heroin. The ignorance of musicians spouting their idiotic rhetoric, which perpetuates the myths that god exists and we have souls is sickening. Lyrics are a main component of music and musicians have to write lyrics that people can relate to in order to provide catharsis. Hopefully this band will cease to exist so intelligent artists will thrive in our culture and challenge the ignorance that infects everything.

4 out of 5 stars filling the gap.......2007-07-16

a powerful, sonic stimulant that breathes fresh life into the current rock world. At their best, they capture the excitement of a band like Depeche Mode, delivering rhythmic surprises at every turn while being accessible and addictive. Muse demonstrates a deft combination of guitars with synths and manages to fill the gap left between the purists on either side. They are melodic and soothing while rocking.

The Killers are coming to town (for which I already have tickets) but Muse is showing up a few days later...think I'm gonna have to try to swing this one, as well.

4 out of 5 stars Stripes of Grandeur.......2007-07-16

Absoltuion in my opinion is the most perfect album ever made. Not because it's my favorite, but the songs shift perfectly as if to form a soundtrack to an dramatically epic movie.

Black Holes unfortunately has too many lacking songs. The majority of the album is mediocre and not really catchy, however its key tracks are the best muse has ever made. First of all, "Starlight" is their first attempt at an uplifting track the end result is honestly the best song i have ever heard. I swear i've been trying for a year and i can't get sick of it.

"Map of the Problematique" is also better than any other song muse has recorded. It's fast yet haunting in the most sinister way. This song grips me in a way i cant ignore. It continues to get more and more eerie as the song goes on, without letting the beat get stale. I just can never stop raving about this song, i think it's gorgeous and one of the best songs ever written. The only reason i like starlight more is because i'm just not depressed enough for this song 24/7.

"City of Delusion" and "Knights of Cydonnia" are also very catchy tracks that i listen to regularly. They allow muse to tap into a downing rock that isnt dark enough to enter a state of overdramatic. This is how they broke away from Absolution. Other than that the rest of the album is kind of a wash. It wont bore you, but you wont be placing them on repeat.

If nothing else, download "starlgiht" and "Map of the Problematique." These 2 tracks are arguably muse's finest and must be admired.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Astounding.......2007-07-06

Much like thier earlier works and but still a brand new sound.

Take a Bow is reminicent of thier older Radioheadeaque sound while Black Holes and Revelations contains more of a funk sound to it.

And if anyone is interested in the upcoming Guitar Here. Knights of Cydonia, which is also on this albulm, will be on it.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Band!!.......2007-07-05

Nomadic Southern evangelist Leon Followill may take soap suds to the mouths of the kinfolk wunderkinds--his three sons and a nephew--in Tennessee quartet Kings of Leon, whose second album spins enough cuss phrases and sexual allusions to leave Dolly Parton flushed. But the peculiar 20-something longhairs also fuel up on a filthy shotgun bass and relentless guitar riffs, complementing the delightfully discordant drawl of vocalist Caleb Followill to whittle a 35-minute grab bag of garage rock, English blues, sixties psychedelia, London Calling-ska, spaced-out country waltzes and front-porch, red-state revelry. Without revising its 2003 debut Youth & Young Manhood, producer Ethan Johns (The Jayhawks, Ray LaMontagne) steers the band down a similar mischievous road, integrating poles-apart rhythms and techniques into an energized jumble of rotating tempos and lyrical bombshells. Putting faith in earth-shakers like "Velvet Snow" and "Pistol Of Fire," the wound down and pleasing "Milk" and its yodeling cousin "Day Old Blues," the Kings ultimately escape Preacher Leon's retribution, rendering him speechless--save for a simple "amen." --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-07-10

This ablum is great all the way around from the tempo, lyrics and instramentals to the tone and depth of each successive track. I definitely reccomend this to anyone who is a fan of The Rolling Stones, White Stripes or The Black Keys.

5 out of 5 stars Heartbroken Smiles.......2007-06-21

This is, in my opinion, the best album put out by the Kings of Leon so far. It's right in the sweet spot between their early, gritty, garage rock days and their current, polished, art rock style. The songs have a strange poetic truth to them, going between stories of growing up, breaking up, incest, and even erectile disfunciton with grace and a unique, catchy sound.

If you're interested in the Kings of Leon, but don't know which album to pick, this is the one. I recommend all of their albums, but this is far and away their most inspired record to date.

5 out of 5 stars KOL's Best.......2007-05-12

This album didn't grab me right away, but I liked it more and more as I listened to it. Now I consider it one of the rare albums that really does deserve 5 stars. For the full 5 I think every song should be good, and several of them should be great and that's the case here. I'm not all that fond of KOL's 1st or 3rd albums, but all the planets aligned for this one and they do their own unique thing just right.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album from the best new rock band.......2007-04-19

I can't believe how many reviewers are trashing this band. Open your ears to GOOD music!

5 out of 5 stars The King ain't dead............2007-04-16

How good is this album????

I heard Youth and Young Manhood at my local coffee shop a few years ago and went out and bought it straight away. I liked it, but this is better...way better. I love listening to a band that perfectly mixes lyrics, music and attitude.

To the reviewers who gave this 1 star because Caleb's voice is crap....get a life....if you place that as one of your criteria go and listen to Mariah Carey....his vocals and the raw guitar sound are one of the best musical matches I have heard in a long time and more power to these guys for keeping it real...

Now the tracks....Slow Night So Long, Taper Jean Girl, Milk, King of the Rodeo are all fantasic songs but pound for pound "The Bucket" is their best song recorded to date. The rattling drum beat in the chorus makes this one of my fav tracks.

Really there are no weak songs, it is just one of those rare albums that hits the mark in so many ways. My only regret is that I missed seeing them when the toured last year especially considering they held an impromptu gig at my local.....Oh well next time around...

Like a shimmering pearl, The Light in the Piazza emerged from a sea of revivals, rehashings, and movie adaptations to secure 11 2005 Tony nominations, including Best Musical. Based on an Elizabeth Spencer novella (which was also made into a 1962 film), it follows a mother, Margaret (Victoria Clark), and her daughter, Clara (Kelli O'Hara), as they take a vacation to Italy. There, Clara and a young Italian (Matthew Morrison) fall in love, but Margaret is determined to keep them apart.

The Light in the Piazza doesn't fit the model of most Broadway scores, with a splashy opener here, a swing number there, then the big ballad. The score is more of a unified whole, sometimes jarring, sometimes following the patterns of speech, and sometimes unfolding in glorious sheens of sound. (Heck, some of it's even in Italian!) In that sense, it's similar to another unconventional American musical set in Italy, Stephen Sondheim's Passion, which is more chamber opera than musical, and composer-lyricist Adam Guettel (song of Mary Rodgers, grandson of Richard Rodgers) seems the most likely heir apparent to Sondheim in the current generation of musical theater creators. O'Hara's voice soars in the score's most beautiful moments ("Say It Somehow," the title song), but Clark enjoys two exquisitely lyrical moments with "Dividing Day" and "Let's Walk." She was one of the show's six Tony winners (for Leading Actress), along with Guettel's score and the orchestrations, scenice design, lighting, and costumes, while O'Hara (for Featured Actress), Morrison, Craig Lucas's book, and Bartlett Sher's direction were also nominated. --David Horiuchi

Album Description

The Light in the Piazza is arguably one of the most highly anticipated theatrical events of the decade for serious Broadway theatergoers. The Los Angeles Times has already declared its creator, Nonesuch artist Adam Guettel, "a composer for the new century," on the strength of his two Off-Broadway productions, the 1996 Obie-Award winning "folk musical" Floyd Collins and the 1998 song cycle, Myths and Hymns, TIME has described him as "a startlingly original songwriter." Few theatrical composers have been watched as closely as Guettel, and few musicals in the course of their development have generated so much substantial press or been praised so highly on the road as The Light in the Piazza. Both the New Yorker and The New York Times magazine devoted in-depth coverage to the evolution of Guettel's sophisticated, deeply moving score. New Yorker critic John Lahr decided,"Guettel's kind of talent cannot be denied. He shouldn't change for Broadway; Broadway, if it is to survive as a creative theatrical force, should change for him."

3 out of 5 stars Snoozeville.......2007-07-23

The only thing more sleep inducing than this cast album is sitting through the actual show. The music is very pretty but too similar and will lull you into a deep coma!

1 out of 5 stars Worst musical I've seen in 5 years.......2007-07-20

As part of the Broadway in Chicago Series, I have seen all of the plays coming through Chicago in recent years. Light in the Piazza was terrible. Who wrote this, and why? The music is forgettable and creates cognitive dissonance. The lyrics are boring.

The scene where the handicapped gal implodes at a dinner party was excruciating to watch. And not in a good way. The play is fractured and confusing.

5 out of 5 stars It's closed in NY, but it opened in Chicago this week!.......2007-07-19

Bravo, "Piazza"! May we all hope that Guettel-Lucas are the Rogers & Hammerstein of a new generation of American music. "Piazza" is not a musical, it is more of a miniature contemporary Mozartian "Magic Flute." The music is brilliant in it's sheer lyricism. Though the plot is thin to the point of absurdity it doesn't matter because the characters grow with each note until "Piazza" blazes forth as a shining star in the current constellation of new and revived Broadway musicals.

For "Piazza" afficiandos there is always hope for musicals as long as "Piazza" continues. This album is a jewel. So many of the songs are incredibly touching. I've sat through New York and Chicago performances and weeped to "Dividing Day" and watched the quiet tears of men and women in the audience. With "Piazza" love in Florence is eternal.

Victoria Clark, (God bless that North Carolina accent) O'Hare and Morrison are the definitive cast. What a collection of voices and actors.

I only hope that everyone who hears "Piazza" has the opportunity to see the performance live somewhere. It's so much more with the lighting and Italian joie de vivre including instructions to turn down your cell phones and pages in Italian.

5 out of 5 stars Simply unique.......2007-07-19

A refreshing change from the usual showtunes that regurgitate the same "sound", i.e melody lines, this is classy and on its own! The performances are nothing short of top notch, Matthew Morrison is fantastic.

Album Description

Multi-platinum and triple Grammy winning band Jars of Clay have long held a reputation for creative excellence. With their latest record Good Monsters, the band continues to create music that stretches the imagination and offers a new perspective on who we are as a church today. Dan Haseltine explains,

"I was not sure how all of the experiences of the last few years would translate into music. There have been so many things to look at and describe. This record is part confessional, part euphoric love poem, part bitter divorce, and part benediction. It was born out of many experiences and conversations between addicts, failures, lovers, loners, believers, and beggars. And so the language of recovery and the honest discourse about our attempts to live apart from God and apart from each other is a theme. Engaging people who are doing the hard work of laying their lives open to others, and avoiding isolation, has allowed me to see that there is both immeasurable evil and unfathomable good mixing under my own skin and it is grace, mercy and freedom that allow me to not simply be a monster, but to be a good monster."

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic CD.......2007-07-21

It is a great CD and I really enjoy it. I hope all of you future customers enjoy it as well. Good luck and God Bless.

4 out of 5 stars Despite a few speed bumps, Jars of Clay zooms ahead.......2007-05-09

I wasn't sure what to expect from Jars of Clay's CD before I bought it. On the one had, yes, Jars of Clay has produced solid albums for years. On the other, there was ominous possibility that they'd go down hill and start producing dull, derivative albums barely worth listening to--it happened to Newsboys, and it could've happened to them. Fortunately, it didn't (and I'm still holding out hope for Newsboys).

"Work" eased my mind, as did "Dead Man". Both fast rock songs combined well-written lyrics with catchy melodies and nice guitar hooks, pulling me into the album with strength. The next few albums were a bit of a letdown in comparison, not bad but really rather average. Once "Oh My God" started, however, I was hooked again.

Where the album's beginning was rockier than most of Jars of Clay's other songs, "Oh My God" (and "Surprise", which came a little after it) are quiet acoustic-driven songs, with emotional lyrics that make use of excellent lyric-writing. "Shoot a dream in your arm and sleep away," says "Surprise" as it opens. "It's not the stuff that kills you that keeps your life at bay." Though after that the album trails off a lot in quality (with the exception of "Light Gives Heat," an indictment of the west's treatment of Africans), those songs alone made the album worth its price to me.

Those other tracks, though, keep the album from a 5/5. Actually, "Mirrors & Smoke" alone would have knocked the album from a perfect score. With its repetitive melody and surprisingly dull lyrics, it's a track that I couldn't stand to listen to more than a few times. Likewise, "All My Tears" and "Water Under the Bridge", though no worse than average, are blemishes on an otherwise brilliant album.

Overall, this is an album fans of Jars of Clay should definitely pick up a copy of. The band has done it again, and despite the few mistakes, this release is quite excellent.

4 out of 5 stars This is Good Music.......2007-05-01

If you want a mix of good Christian music this is it and it should be on a best seller list some where in this world. There is worship and rock all mixed into one. This would be a good gift for anyone who is dumb founded into what kinda of music CD to get someone.

5 out of 5 stars Another fantastic Jars of Clay CD.......2007-03-24

I had only heard Dead Man on the radio and wasn't sure what to expect from the rest of the CD, but it's quickly become one of my favorites. The Jars are so incredibly talented and inspirational, too. This one will appeal to younger (teenage) listeners too, since it's got a rocker kind of edge to a lot of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Great Christian Music.......2007-03-09

I received this CD as a gift and loved it so much, I bought one for my brother and one for my sister.

It is not possible to fit 36 Bach masterpieces on two CDs, so what Essential Bach does is present individual movements from across a range of the composer's work. The anthology is clearly aimed at the newcomer, and the absence of booklet notes to put the music in context is disappointing. We are only given titles, performers, and what films the extracts have been featured in, from Rollerball to The English Patient.

On the plus side, most if not all of the music is instantly recognizable, by melody if not by name. Everything from the Brandenburg Concertos to "Air on a G String" to the B Minor Mass and St. Matthew Passion is represented. Performances range from 1960 to 1993, encompassing both early instrument and modern orchestra interpretations by a wide variety of forces, including Sir Neville Marriner with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and Raymond Leppard leading the English Chamber Orchestra. Given such diversity the result is unavoidably a patchwork, albeit one made from the finest materials, and as such is perhaps best treated as a sampler to aid exploration of the vast legacy of one of the very greatest composers who ever lived. --Gary S. Dalkin, Amazon.co.uk

5 out of 5 stars so amazing .......2006-06-14

I love this kind of playing. this is my favorite classical cd.

3 out of 5 stars Essential Bach is OK.......2005-09-29

This is a good basic primer. A true Bach lover might find a better selection/orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of mostly recognizeable music.......2005-03-18

LOVE LOVE LOVE this 2-CD set. I bought I a awhile back and have enjoyed it very much. My toddler likes it too. I think it's a great value for the money and may have to get another copy if this one wears out.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite Essential Bach.......2005-02-01

Value and exquisite sampler of Bach on two CD's at an affordable price. Recorded by the likes primarily of Academy of the St. Martin-in-the-fields, Chicago Sympony, Boston Symphony, English Chamber Orchestra and with virtuoso performers as William Bennett, Heinz Hollinger, Pepe Romero, and Wolfgang Rubsam, one gets treated to wonderful Bach exerpts of all his fantastic breath and depth of chamber, symphony and choral works.

One will have to go to other places to find background on these marvelous compositions as the liner notes only list perfomer and date recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Good.......2004-07-13

It would be easy to pass off this latest Jars of Clay release as a marketing gimmick, especially as more and more Christian artists are turning to casting age-old hymns in their own creative image. Has the modern praise-and-worship songwriting well run dry or are artists truly looking back over time to gain that "renewed and refreshed perspective" as Jars describes this effort in the liner notes for Redemption Songs? The thoughtful listener will quickly discover that the latter is true. Jars of Clay's acoustic, organic sound is an ideal approach to presenting "very old words set to almost completely modern music" as never once does the music overshadow the power of the words. The band captures the essence of hope and joy in tracks "God Will Lift Up Your Head," "It Is Well With My Soul," and the rousing "Nothing But the Blood," aided by the great Blind Boys of Alabama. On the other side of the emotional spectrum, the needful ache of man seeking God is well captured with melancholic "I Need Thee Every Hour" and "Hiding Place." Other special guest appearances by Sarah Kelly on "I'll Fly Away" and Delirious' Martin Smith on "Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder" all fit well within the reverential mood of this marvelous release. If this record doesn't renew and refresh you, it may be time to check your pulse. --Michael Lyttle

2 out of 5 stars Not very redeeming.......2007-07-24

I wanted this CD to be some of the old hymns sung with all the verses in the original tune, but it wasn't.
There were too few "Old" Redemption Songs, and odd music, with most the song being the chorus repeated..
over...and over...and over...
I only hear one of the songs on the radio.... just not what I was thinking it would be .....

5 out of 5 stars Classics with a new generation twist.......2007-07-07

Many of the classics with a New Generation Twist. I enjoy the added instruments to the oldies. Jars of Clay does a great job. My favorite is "Fly Away".

5 out of 5 stars Soft/country rock is nice alternative (but no substitute).......2007-05-13

If you're looking for a traditional treatment of classic hymns, don't buy this album. But if you enjoy the lyrics of these old hymns and you are open to a slightly different take, try this CD. I grew up with traditional hymns and love them very much. There are no substitutes for those, but this album is a really nice alternative. I appreciate the fact that it's not too worship-y, by which I mean praise phrases are not repeated incessantly. The music is nice, with a bit of a soft rock and sometimes a country rock flare.

I have another JOC album but wouldn't call myself a true fan. There is actually very little Christian music that I like because it is too poppy and praisy. But I very much appreciate this album and rate it 5 stars. (As for my general musical tastes, I love classic rock, followed by alternative rock.)

5 out of 5 stars A praise album of substance.......2007-04-05

By turns rockin' and mellow, this album is always deeply felt music of traditional worship songs and spirituals, given an injection of modern energy and color by a group of real musicians with soul. Even the "weaker" songs grow on one with time. A keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Super Duper.......2007-02-20

If you enjoy old hymns with a little more peppy pace - this is for you.

Tech man Matthew Dear has spent the last several years dipping his toes into pop, and while Asa Breed doesn't exactly dive into the deep end, it gets Dear pretty well soaked. Initially associated with the Richie Hawtin school of Detroit minimalism, he's been diversifying his sound over the course of his prolific recorded output (he also records under the names Jabberjaw and False, among others) since at least 2003's Leave Luck to Heaven. But Breed is more song-oriented and accessible than anything else he's released, even as it rolls out the sharp-edged studio craft that has built Dear's reputation as a producer. Songs like "Pom Pom" are fractured new wave flashbacks while short and seemingly simple songs like "Death to Feelers" get deeply ambient, revealing new layers with repeated listens. Another trick that helps soften the record is the work done on Dear's droning baritone. An acquired taste at best, he wisely chose to give it a sharper electro edge, mixing it up in a Nick-Cave-meets-Gary Numan way as his lyrics bounce between nonsensical and sarcastic. Stripped down and largely acoustic songs like "Midnight Lovers" and "Vine to Vine" only add minimal effects, letting Dear's weird words drive the music forward. While some fans hoping for a proper DJ record might be disappointed, Asa Breed is clearly the work of a man who wants little or nothing to do with what's expected. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars John Rutter Collection is glorious!.......2007-07-23

This music begins my day in uplifting way. Each day a different piece catches my attention. I am so glad to have it.

5 out of 5 stars John Rutter Collection.......2007-02-19

This CD is one of several that features Rutter directing his own choir. It has a good cross section of the John Rutter compositions, and is a good starting place for someone who has not heard Rutter's music before. I think you will be "hooked" if you really love choral music.

4 out of 5 stars Typically gorgeous Rutter.......2005-12-20

I love John Rutter's music. Especially the "For the Beauty of the Earth" that is on this CD. Rutter is not the most inventive or varied composer of modern music, but if you have a taste for traditional choral writing with some angelic children's chorus singing, then you will probably share my enjoyment of Rutter's writing. Unfortunately I cannot give this CD 5 stars when it seems there is a drum set tapping annoyingly away on several of the songs. I do not understand this at all and am bothered by it every time I listen to those songs. It's a shame, because otherwise I love the music, and think it is lushly written, and simply but beautifully performed. I would highly suggest listening to sample track 3 before purchasing -- you can hear what sounds like a ride-cymbal right at the very end of the sample. This sound occurs in several of the songs on this recording.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-12-03

I am a huge John Rutter fan. The lilting melodies, the poignant lyrics and the lush orchestrations make his music not only accessable but also uplifting. This compilation, although drawing from many other previous recordings, is a great composite of his wirk. The sound is exquisite. Even if you own other recordings of this music, this is worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars To sample Rutter's best music, this is the one........2005-06-30

I purchased this CD as an introduction to the music of John Rutter and went on to purchase many more of his compositions. Still, this remains my favorite collection. It is choral music at its absolute finest. Far from "just church music", this CD has songs of faith, a few Christmas carols, a Celtic song for lovers, and even a child's tune or two. While most of the pieces are peaceful, warm, and thought-provoking, a few are up-tempo and lively. In my opinion, it is a perfectly balanced collection in which one song flows beautifully into the next with no sense of a jarring change of pace. If you have any interest in choral music, begin with the best...John Rutter... and this superb arrangement. Highly recommended.
