This is one of my favourite albums of all time which has been remastered for a great sound and with no less than 6 bonus tracks added as well! No weak tracks here and my favourite track is the last one, "No Fish Today." Kid Creole's very unique blend of various musical styles is what gives him this very special sound. Reggae/Ska/Caribbean/Salsa among others all are blended into a very pleasant-sounding musical soup. The ultimate party album. Very highly recommended.

20 Years Too Soon!.......2005-05-30

Groundbreaking album. Combines many styles of music. Very unique sound. Fantastic use of acoustic instruments with synthsizers. There hasnt been a band yet to capture this amalgamation of music. Too far ahead of its time to enjoy its true success. If this were released today August Darnell would own the world.

Tropical Gangsters was Kid Creole And The Coconuts' 1982 album and has been re-released with 6 additional tracks consisting of remixes of Annie I'm Not Your Daddy, I'm A Wonderful Thing Baby and Stool Pigeon, plus B-sides previously only available on vinyl.

It is musically very well rounded and more sophisticated than earlier albums like Off The Coast Of Me, meaning production is slicker and the band is tight. Still I think the Coast album contains more memorable songs and more musical variety like the brilliant Bogotá Affair and their charming version of Lilli Marlene.

My favorites here include the huge UK hits Annie, I'm Not your Daddy, Wonderful Thing and Stool Pigeon. They're all melodic, uplifting and sometimes humorous tunes with catchy hooks and the trademark Darnell humour. I also love the soulful Loving You Made A Fool Out Of Me.

Tropical Gangsters is a good album but the music is a rather similar blend of pop, caribbean and big band sounds lacking the variety offered by albums like Coast or Fresh Fruit From Foreign Places. It is however, an enduring and unique strain of popular music that started with Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band and has aged well, especially if you like dance music with lots of personality and a dash of humour.

pure tropical genius..........2003-05-24

If in your lifetime you only heard a song or two by Kid Creole and The Coconuts, it would be of off this album - "Tropical Gangsters" was the commercial pinnacle of their career and produced the number of their biggest singles - rightfully so, I may add. Although Kid & The Coconuts had better albums - check out "Fresh Fruits in Foreign Places" or "Doppelganger"- and ocassional great moments later in career - "Don't Take My Coconuts," "The Lifeboat Party," "Endicott," "(Dancing at the) Baines Douches" - none of the later song collections summarized better what the band was all about.

The songs on this album are as campy and trashy as you can only wish for and they are a firm statement of August Darnell (a.k.a. The Kid) as a great songwriter and masterful entertainer. With the invaluable help of his faithfull sidekick Andy Hernandez (a.k.a. Coati Mundi), he had managed to put together a very appealing package, drawing from Broadway musicals and disco, reggae and calypso, soul and funk, and most importantly from their heritage of blacks/Latinos in these great United States, with New York City a designated locale.

The sheer level of songwriting skills would mark this album - and Kid Creole as an artist - as one of the indispensable of the era, but the collective efforts of the whole orchestra and many of its member artists/branches - Cory Daye, Gichy Dan, Pond Life brass and strings, etc. - turns this record into a pop masterpiece never to be repeated in the further development of popular music.

Bonus tracks are all hard to find 12" mixes and all the more reason to get this record, along with few more titles - above mentioned ones plus "Off the Coast Of Me" - in the newly remastered Universal Kid Creole series. Guaranteed to please!

This an album that has self scientific featuring artists like Phil Da Agony, Planet Asia, and Krondon. I love the album, but the songs on the back of the album dont match the way they are on the CD. For example the song "Shame on a Ni**a" from Talib Kweli is on there, but it does not say that on the album. LONG LIVE THE SELF SCIENCE!!!

True Hip-Hop and full of great lyrics.......2005-09-20

Everyone associates the West Coast with Dre, Pac and Game or they think of Bay rap and talent like Self Scientific is overlooked. Fact of the matter is: This is just solid hiphop plain and simple. You have good concept songs, awareness songs and gangsta rap as well. The best part of Gods & Gangstas is that you can truely let the whole CD play without skipping around. The skits are very short and don't deterr from the music. The beats are solid and bangin. You can get to headnodding to everyone of them and Chase Infinite comes correct on every track as does Krodon, Born Allah and Planet Asia. Honestly, if you are a fan of rap, in any form you will like this CD. Support real hip-hop and true MCs and producers like Self Scientific.

After hearing this mixtape I can't wait for the 'Change' LP. Khalil and Chase keep makin' passionate and progressive Hip-Hop and I hope the world takes notice. I'm not an officionado of music, I like what I like, and I may be partial here... Heretix was a local Boston band during my college days, and I would try to see them everytime they played. Gods & Gangsters is one of my all time favorite albums... from track 1 through 10. Ray Lemieux was also voted best Local Male Vocalist for 2 or 3 years by readers of the Boston Pheonix back in the early nineties. While now the sound is a bit dated, it is still a great album to listen to, and I find it in my CD player often. I'd recommend any of their albums to someone who may have enjoyed bands like: the Smithereens, Faith No More, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Candlebox...

... because that is what this album is worth. i would get rid of it, but i haven't yet found anyone tone-deaf enough to be willing to take it off my hands.

It's a good CD the beats are nice and everyone on the tracks are good. Honestly if your looking for those solo too short songs you won't find that in this mixtape. It's all about his label but its good. Just like every rapper that comes out with there group there group will never beat his performance. There comparable to dangerous crew with too short back in 95 except not as explicit.

Yeah, eject your cd player slide this one in, turn it up (all the way up!) and just ride to it. Craziest sh** I 've heard this year. Ok I admit it beatwise it ain't original but i jus can't get enough of that hyphie sound. Also some of the collab's didn't ring any bells...they do now.

All I got to say about this album is that if you are a real rap fan, and if you are loyal, you should get this album. Too $heezy may be 40 years old, but he's still going strong just like MJ did his last run around. For all the haters out there who are going to hate on this album, you guys are all just deaf and dumb. This album is an instant classic, and just the beginning of the future for $hort's new up and coming artists. All I got to say is that if $hort chose them and taught them, then all these fake A$$ pimps who claim to be pimping on their videos better watch out for the real deal!

The crowd goes whild when they hear the creative lyrics from this one of a kind music colaboration between a husky-boy, a man in a speedo, and Ron Jeremy's kid. It doesnt get more real or FUNNIER than this.
