5 out of 5 stars Tull - Thick as a Brick.......2007-07-13

As an undying fan of the rock opera, my tastes rank the top three in the following order: Genesis, "Lamb"; Tull, "Thick as a Brick" and The Who, "Tommy". Coincidentally, few other rock opera exist unless you include Elton John's "Yellow Brick Road" and The Beatles' "Sergeant Pepper". However, I am not completely convinced that a fine line cannot be drawn between what is a collection of songs having a common theme, hence an album, versus a long piece of music that tells a story as is the case with "Lamb" and "Tommy". The question I have, then, is: Given that "Thick as a Brick" is one very long song covering both sides of an LP, does that necessarily qualify it as rock opera? On the CD, Tull comments on the work and clarifies the confusion somewhat by comparing "Thick" as a followup to "Aqualung" as a concept album. I doubt that anyone who has listened to "Aqualung" would fail to understand a story is being told there, but with "Thick as a Brick", is there really a story to it? Yes, there's a progression in how heirs to lands and title "renew the age-old purpose", but a story? I have to believe Ian when he tongue-in-cheek explains how the band spoofed the media into thinking at the time the album was made that the lyrics were written by a 12-year old boy. That is not to say the the lyrics are stupid, by no means! If they had been written by a 12-year old, I would certainly guess the kid to be a genius. But, my question is: Does "Thick as a Brick" tell a story that would qualify it as rock opera? Though, my logical sense says no, my musical sense revels in the marching band cadences, the beautifully constructed acoustic guitar-flute melodies and the way all the pieces mesh. It is truly a rock opera for the ages, whether there's a story to it or not. I love this album! Always have, always will.

5 out of 5 stars Life's a Long Song.......2007-06-20

Simply a classic. This is a Tull album that will never go out of style and can be played over and over. In fact, I've done just that. I'm not an afficianado, but I know what I like. I like Tull. And I like this album.

5 out of 5 stars A wild ride.......2007-06-13

Many years ago, I purchased "Thick as a Brick" on vinyl, expecting a traditional rock album, with a collection of 8 to 10 songs. I was amazed that there was only one song covering both sides. I listened to it once and was completely lost once it got past the first 3 minute edit I had heard on the radio several times.

I was so bewildered that I returned the album for a refund and was suspicious of Jethro Tull for a few years, thinking that maybe they were just too unorthodox for my tastes.

Now that I own all of the Jethro Tull CDs, I am obviously a huge Tull fan and my opinion of "Thick as a Brick" is quite different. I like this album. It might be the best album Tull ever recorded. Or maybe "A Passion Play" is the best (which is similar to "Thick as a Brick" in the sense that they both are continuous play with many movements within).

Or maybe the idea of a single song covering an entire album is too preteneous and less enjoyable for the listener who doesn't have over 40 minutes to spare in one sitting. I'd say that someone who is just starting to get to know Jethro Tull's music should start with an album with a traditional song format. You could choose 'Crest of a Knave,' 'Songs from the Wood,' 'Catfish Rising,' 'Benefit' or 'A.'

Still, this album is nearly one of a kind. If you are relatively new to Tull, I'd play it safe and buy any of the 'Songs from the Wood,' 'Heavy Horses,' 'Stormwatch,' 'A' albums or perhaps 'Crest of a Knave.' But if you tend to like progressive, ambitious albums, buy this one.

3 out of 5 stars Muddled, Pretentious - But Catchy.......2007-04-27

I cannot believe the way some people go on about this LP ... geez ... here's the reality if it. There's some good material here, enough for 4 or 5 good songs. It's mostly on Side 1. Side 2 is like some weird "remix" of similar themes that is fairly unnecessary. The whole weaving of the songs together and pretense towards viewing this as a "concept album" or some merging of pop and classic forms is unnecessary and serves the material badly. So do a few of the arrangements with bouncing pipe organ and so forth that will make most non-fans wince and remind many of us of Spinal Tap's "Stonehenge" (the penultimate Tull parody) and so forth. And the muddy recording quality does this material no favors either.

That's not to say this is a disaster, because Anderson was still writing good stuff, with energy and imagination. I think we would have all been better served if the tracks were broken out seperately and the pretense removed - if this could have been halfway-a-concept-album, songs that relate instead of interlink, like "Aqualung".

They overreached, and the results are mildly interesting.

5 out of 5 stars I don't pretend to be..........2007-04-26

a Jethro Tull fanatic, but I am an old time rocker and I love both Thick as a Brick and Aqualung, and never get tired of putting either in my player and reveling in the past. The other reviewers have done a great job commenting on the arrangements, the musicianship, the lyrics, etc. so I won't attempt to add anything. My point is that there are any number of musicians who write a song or two or even three spoofing the life and times of a rock and roller, e.g. Joe Walsh's "Life's Been Good" and John Entwhistle's "Success Story", but a whole record spoofing the genre, i.e. the "concept" album, in a rather subtle way was and still is remarkable. I can remember the rock critics of those days desperately trying to discern the message when the message ultimately is, no more and no less, just great music. So, buy it, play it, and just plain enjoy it for what it is.

5 out of 5 stars Man, I like these guys!.......2005-05-20

As a longtime fan of The Pogues, I bought "Communications and Convictions" on a bit of a whim. I was floored... this is an excellent band! I decided to pick up "Long Dim Road" and this one, and I'm not disappointed.
Probably a few more "ballad"-ish tunes than the other CD's I've mentioned, but no problem, they're good at those. The lyrics can be a bit convoluted at times, but why carp? This is fun, drinking party celtic/folk/punk that is just a joy to listen to. Tracks 2 and 6 stand out to me (I REALLY like mandolin!), but they are all good. The musicianship is excellent, and Tony Duggins has that drunken, slightly off-key growling vocal thing down pat. Makes me want to hoist a pint every time I crank this one up!
The Tossers are more talented and listenable than the Dropkicks or The Real McKenzies, and more traditional sounding and less mainstream than Flogging Molly. Don't get me wrong, no-one can ever even approach the magic of Shane and the boys, but I do think these guys are the best I've heard at this type of music since The Pogues.
Finally, I can't wait until the "statute of limitations" is up on my driving record, so I can cruise 100 miles or so to Chicago to hear these chaps live!!

5 out of 5 stars POUR ME A PINT.......2005-01-05

THIS ALBUM IS GREAT I HAVE ALL THE TOSSERS ALBUMS AND HAVE BEEN GOIN TO THEIR SHOWS FOR A LONG TIME. THIS ALBUM DOESNT HAVE THE PUNK INFLUENCED SONGS LIKE LONG DIM ROAD BUT IS AN AWSOME ALBUM.VERY MATURE VERY GOOD.SURE I MISS THE INTENSE SONGS THEY USED TO PLAY BUT HEY THEYVE BECOME SOMETHING GREAT AND THIS ALBUM PROVES IT.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Irish Albums.......2004-10-05

I started to get into the Tossers about a year seeing them in Concert. They are very energentic and seem to love what they do. And by listening to this album really gets my blood flowing with energy and a sudden urge to start a jig. And Being from Chicago where they are from makes even that much better cause i get to see them more. But this Album is excellant and i suggest to purchase this great irish album. Soon or Later they will be up there with the pogues and flogging molly

5 out of 5 stars great album.......2004-03-01

The Tossers are one of my favorite bands and this is one of my favorite CD's by any band. A previous reviewer mentioned that it sounds over produced and lacks energy. I disagree. The Tossers have been around a while and have since learned to play their instuments very well so the music is amazing. Not over produced. And it may not have as much of the screaming vocals and speed such as older songs like "riot" and "aye sire" but you can feel the emotion of the music and vocals more than anything else i've heard from them before. The only thing wrong with the CD is there is only one cover or traditional song, "the parting glass" which is a hidden track. Still, it's definately a 5-star CD. Buy it.

Also, The Tossers are NOT a celtic punk band. People just like to label them that way to feel cool and so they don't have to admit they like celtic folk-rock. They are much closer to celtic hippy than celtic punk.

4 out of 5 stars Drunken tunes.......2003-07-19

I would sy this is one of best celtic punk albums to buy along with any other swingin utters release, the tossers play a good hybrid of genres which works well in pretty much every song its a merry album thats goes well with a barrel of guiness.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Modern Pop.......2002-04-05

Well, here it is. For those of you who who have been screaming "Why don't they make records like they used to?" - here is the CD to pop in and play. Over and over and over.

Believe it or not, the best description of Linus is "McCartney Light." For those of you who think McCartney's "You Gave Me The Answer," "Calico Skies," "Goodbye (demo)" and other charming ditties are underrated masterpieces, order this album for overnight shipping. Linus (as represented here) is also part Elton John's "Rock of the Westies," part Gilbert O'Sullivan, part Harry Nilsson's tip-of-the-hat "Harry" album, and most of all, The Beach Boys.

His songs are melodic, catchy, and timelessly produced. Melodically and lyrically, "A Whole New Country" is the most McCartney-esque, with it's innocent "A World Without Love"-style lyrics and sing-along melody. "Everyday I Fall in Love Again" is more hopeless-romanticism along the same lines with a slight-Nick Lowe/Elvis Costello touch (but just a touch) and "Thank You For Making Me Feel... Better" is pure smile-era Beach Boys produced in the EXACT same vein as their "Smiley Smile" version of "Vegetables."

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ALBUM to all age groups. I'm 26, from Los Angeles. And this is hip stuff no matter where you are listening.

4 out of 5 stars How Irresistable Is This?.......2001-11-29

So catchy, even my 2 year-old walks around the house singing Linus songs! That might sound like a turn-off, but there is enough to the arrangements to bear repeated listenings. what at first may sound like nothing but bubblegum reveals itself to be very intelligent, well-crafted and, yes, maddeningly hooky songs.

Linus is a one-man wrecking crew, apparently playing every instrument on this album, and doing it awfully well. And his choice of cover material is inspired: doing a torch version of the Smoking Popes' punk semi-hit "I Need You Around" and revealing Ozzy Osbourne for the pure pop genius he is with an inspired take on "Goodbye To Romance".

If you like Kinks/Beatles-flavored pop tunes. You should really check this one out!

3 out of 5 stars Kitchen Sink Included.......2001-10-26

Linus of Hollywood sounds a little Beatlish, a little Beach Boyish, and even a little like America. There are some nice moments here, but the pretension of the name--Linus Of Hollywood--comes out in the music too. There are moments on it where I feel like artist and producer sat down and made a concerted effort to include every Pop and Bubblegum pretense into each title; I keep expecting the kitchen sink to come flying out the speakers. The attempt at cute & witty is just a bit too transparent.

There are some things I really like a lot. "Building A Ship" is good, though I could do without the "Greensleeves" flute parts. "I've Lost My Mind" is kind of nice but--here comes the kitchen sink--the oh-so-whacky keyboard and synth break kills it.

This is what Emitt Rhodes would have been with too large a budget. Perhaps there's a more restrained approach in the future that will let these melodies rise above the overproduction.

Worth a listen, but don't expect to walk around humming these tunes for any length of time.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant.......2001-06-11

Linus has strong melodic gifts in writing and good taste in arranging, but his voice, while strong and pleasing, has a limited range of expression that fails to lift some tracks out of the background. Recommended, but nothing extraordinary.

5 out of 5 stars If a Six Stars'rate had existed..........2001-03-30

Absolutely Fantastic! Their first album was a total treat, this one is gorgeous: McCartney melodies, Wilsonian vocals, all that a pop lover would hope to find in a record today. Congratulations folks!

5 out of 5 stars Drop dead gorgeous.......2005-07-04

Every now and then you get a CD come along where some really outstanding artist allows themself to just let their hair down for a moment. Of course it has to be done with aplomb and thorough good taste adding their unique touch of brilliance while sucessfully avoiding any hint of kitch. Russian Early Music pioneer Anatoly Grindenko here records songs from the time of Tsarist Russia. These are songs that transient political regimens would have tried to replace in the popular affection with political songs. Yet somehow these songs have survived in the hearts and affections of the Russian people and this peasant tradition of folk song that refused to die is presented with Grindenko's usual expertise and sung expertly with the utmost affection. In fact the songs were always sung by this choir for their own private fun but excluded from 'serious' concert performances. The quality of singing, as can be expected under Grindenko's expert choral direction, is superb througout. The end result is a lovely CD that can be highly recommended to anybody who just loves to listen to beautiful singing. After all the works of Tchaikovsky, Borodin and Stravinsky draw heavily on Russian folk song as a rich source of thematic material but any serious music lover would enjoy this CD just as much with its range of songs ranging from boisterous to charming to melancholy. Opus 111, as usual, provide expertly engineered sound to match. The end result is a drop dead gorgeous CD that will delight anyone lucky enough to discover this secret gem.

      5 out of 5 stars Brilliant !.......2001-12-26

This recording is a fantastic example of the russian choral tradition. Wonderful selections sung with obvious passion .The rousing patriotic tunes will make you want to march to the front, the romantic ballads will make you wish you never left and the songs of hearth and homeland will make you inch closer to your loved ones. If you have a passion for things "russian" this one just might keep you occupied for a while.

you really can't go wrong with the tossers... this new ep features five songs, the excellent title track, which apparently will be on the forthcoming full length record, two takes on traditional irish songs, a bob dylan cover, and an extrordinarily well done version of jerry lee lewis' "rockin my life away." the jerry lee lewis cover is surprisingly faithfull to the original: no punchdrunk irish wanking here, just rock'n roll that could, if we didn't know better, fit nicely on the "loud, fast, and out of control" box set. who knew ol' duggins could belt 'em out like that? not me.

"first league out from land" is an tasty snack for the fans until a new full length is released (i've heard its slated for the springtime). enjoy this, go see 'em live, and have a good time. the tossers will not let you down. ever.

      5 out of 5 stars Audibly & Economically Viable.......2005-01-02

Dan Schafer, a.k.a Dan Vapid (Screeching Weasel, The Riverdales), back with an album based on the Michael Douglas movie Falling Down. No, seriously. Early nineties pop-punk and that's meant in the best way possible. You'd think that an album titled "Not Economically Viable" from a dude in the Riverdales would be a jaded listen, but this album will make you remember why you got into pop-punk in the first place.

      Product Description

Rock has never touched the human spirit quite like the new female-led, worship-infused, more-than-modern album from Lystra's Silence. Their signature sound, partnered with powerful lyrics and diverse musical influences, is quickly securing them a place in modern music.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Worship Music!.......2006-05-31

This CD has a broad range of great worship music from edgy, fast rock to introspective melodic prayer-in-song. It is a disc that I listen to over and over and over. I can't wait for the next one from this great group...

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2005-11-18

Very often, when you download mp3's that you know very little or even less about, you understand that the download is an experiment and may not be worth your time. This is one of those rare occasions when the download(s) were worth every minute! This is a highly professional sounding band, with interesting, powerful compositions, great vocals, and heartfelt lyrics. They are so good in fact, that I was surprised that I had not previously heard their music on the radio.

I would categorize their sound as modern Christian rock and think their music would appeal to a wide audience. Their sound is powerful and yet musical. The muscianship, faultless. The singing, outstanding (female lead vocalist).

I downloaded all 7 of their mp3's on Amazon.com. What a treat! To provide that many full length mp3's for free says something about the faith and heart of this band. I believe God rewards that kind of faith. After previewing those songs, I also purchased the CD from Amazon. Now I am looking forward to hearing the rest of the CD. :-)

      5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2005-04-29

What an album! From the first time I heard the sweet sound, and lyric's produced from the minds and hearts of these amazing musicians, my view on music and worship was forever changed. This album came from musician's heart's who chose not to write music and lyric's on their own terms, but through the heart of God. From original guitar scheme's, to breath-taking vocals and harmonies, to the most tight, together rythym known to man. These 5 Idaho, Kenya produced musicians have taken modern rock/worship to a whole new level. Be prepared to be forever changed.
