5 out of 5 stars You Don't Know Punk.......2006-02-17

If you are going to listen to any of these one star giving fools, then you don't know anything about good punk music. Don't get me wrong, today's Yellowcard makes some great music. But, this CD is not your typical mainstream alternative. This is when Ben Dobson used to be the lead singer and Yellowcard used to be Yellowcard. Give it a try if you have heard about NOFX, Guttermouth, or Face to Face, and you will like it.

4 out of 5 stars For Yellowcard fans.......2006-01-09

This is for Yellowcard fans, not people who are fans of the latest big thing. I am a Yellowcard fan. I don't care how famous they get, and I don't care how many "haters" they have. I am a fan of their musicianship and ability to write music together. That being said, the singing on this album is mostly horrible. Just about everything on this album is awesome, except for Ben Dobsons voice. "On The Brink" was the first Yellowcard song I ever heard and I have to say that it is one of my favorites on this album. Another suggestion I have is "Kids". That's a great one too. My favorite songs on the album are "Time Will Tell" and "Uphill Both Ways". Even though I think Ryan Key joining the band has sparked all kinds of controversy and may very well be the reason that the members have changed so many times, it is the best thing that could've happened to Yellowcard. Like I said, the singing was the only thing that needed to be changed.

If you have a closed-mind, don't like crappy singing, or just don't like Yellowcard in general, then don't get this album. However, if you have an open mind and can get past crappy singing, then I suggest giving this album a chance, or two. I think that it would have to grow on most people. It is definately an acquired taste.

Well, the first time I listened to this album I thought; is this Yellowcard? Then I realised they had another vocalist at that time. Well, when you get used to his voice, you will find a very shiny cd! You can realy hear that it's Yellowcard, it's a bit more immature than albums like OCEAN AVANUE, but it's great to listen to. You have to listen it a few times before starting to like it, but than you really have a jewel. This is not an album for the average punkrock listener who only knows big names like Green Day, Pennywise etc. This is for the fans, those who know Yellowcard, Sugarcult and more. I really recommend this album!

4 out of 5 stars JEEZ People are harsh.......2005-09-25

i love punk, be it normal punk, pop punk, anything of that matter, so just so you get it straight, i do enjoy yellowcards new stuff. Now, giving this 1 star is going way to far. The whole band was in high school when these cd was released, it was their second release, after the 1997 album, midget tossing, which is almost impossible to get your hands on. THIS IS MOST LIKELY NOT FOR FANS OF TODAYS YELLOWCARD! trust me, it took a while for me to get into it, but i think this is a solid punk rock album. Lesson Learned Anywhere But Here, On The Brink, these don't sound anything like ocean avenue or only one, but still, this is for the people that enjoy more fast pased punk rock music.

5 out of 5 stars The most diverse Bracket album to date........2006-05-08

Simply amazing. Seventeen different songs, seventeen completely different sounds. As a whole, this album is very melodic, with a huge focus on vocals--a capella bridges and intros are quite common on Requiem. It's a bit too unorthodox and complex for the "punk rock" genre, so I choose to label it as "alternative rock." Fans of Superdrag will love this album at first listen.

The best way to listen to this album is just to listen to it over and over again. At first, it may seem alien but once you discover how great this album really is (or realize how long it must have taken them to arrange and record all those vocal tracks), it will be stuck in your CD player for a very long time.

(FYI--The reason why they appear out of order is because that was the order in which they were written. If Bracket put them in numerical order it would sound choppy and unnatural--but like every other Bracket album, it flows flawlessly from track to track.)

4 out of 5 stars Fun stuff.......2006-03-03

This, quite easily, is the oddest punk release to be heard in quite some time. Not so much because of the music itself (although there are some head scratching moments), but because of everything associated with this release that isn't the actual music.

First, I was pretty confused when I was looking over the tracklisting on the rear of the cd. Every song was "Warren's Song pt. ". This isn't so out of the ordinary in itself as many prog bands label their movements and sections of extra long songs. But none of Bracket's songs are in order. For example, track one is "Warren's Song pt. 16" and track seven is "Warren's Song pt. 17". In between are parts 19, 14, 24, 11, and 23 respectively. So did Bracket make one big release about Warren and mix it all up?

Second, these guys still exist? It's been six years since their last studio release so, for all intents and purposes, most people probably figured they hit up the punk band retirement home. And, no, this isn't a reunion effort.

Third, and finally, the contents of this CD are off the wall in every direction. You have do-wop flavored pop, bouncy mid 90's style punk, modern schmaltzy pop-punk, acoustic sing-a-longs, Weezer inspired quirk rock, blistering distorted punk, and peppy melodi-punk. There really hasn't been this eclectic of a punk album put out in well over six years, and there probably won't be another one for at least six more (unless Bracket get around to making a follow-up to Requiem before that).

Listening to this effort straight through is quite a trip as each of the 17 songs has an oddly unique feel. It was almost as if the band entered the studio on 17 different days, each time trying their hardest to create a new song that would sound nothing like what they did on any of the other 16 days. If that's the case, then for the most part, they succeeded.

For most discerning punk listeners, 17 songs would be a little bit of overkill, but in this case there is so much variation that you feel like you ended up with either a Bracket sampler disc in which you get to hear bits of all the punk sub-genres they are capable of playing or a Bracket homage album. Not a disc that is an homage to Bracket, but a disc that shows Bracket playing homage to all of their influences.

Six years may have been a heck of a long time between releases, but in the end it turned out just fine as this release comes out at a very opportune time, just as the classic Epitaph / Fat Wreck punk sound is making a comeback. Obviously this isn't a standard Epi-Wreck sounding record-it is so much more diverse-but it encompasses a broad range of what was popular in that sound that you'll feel nostalgic throughout Requiem's running. So kick back, pop this disc in, and take a trip back to punk's glory days of the 1990's.

Since 1987 this power trio has churned out Black Sabbath-influenced grind-sludge metal for a fanatical underground following. Part of the early '90s "Seattle scene," the Melvins never achieved the radio airplay of their contemporaries, though founding members Buzz "King Buzzo" Osborne (the eccentric, Afro-ed singer-guitarist) and Dale Crover (drummer-vocalist) are beloved and prolific fixtures on the indie rock scene. Their latest seven-song outing on fellow quirky musician (and Osborne's Fantomas bandmate) Mike Patton's Ipecac label will likely not boost them out of relative obscurity, but it's an entertaining aural journey nonetheless. From the heady 'n' heavy intensity of "Black Stooges," which ends with several minutes of drums and feedback, to the winning speedy, countrified punk power of "Dr. Geek" and the garage metal of "Little Judas Chongo," Hostile Ambient Takeover is, as the title suggests, at once more punky and more ambient than previous swampy efforts. There are some lengthy, ponderous, slo-mo entries, which is not unexpected of the Melvins, while the nearly 16-minute album closer is a wash of mostly instrumental noise that ranges from ominous to space age (vocals kick in 10 minutes into the song). Oddball but engaging, the Melvins have carved out a unique niche, which they dig deeply into on Hostile Ambient Takeover, their 18th album of aural idiosyncrasy. --Katherine Turman

THIS CD IS DEFINETLY MY FAVORITE MELVINS CD. THERE IS NOTHING ABOUT IT I DON'T LIKE.

    1. BLACK STOOGES - JUST A DRUM INTRO. BORING, DALE CROVER CAN DRUM BETTER THAN THAT.
    2. UNTITLED - REALLY GOOD OPENING SONG
    3. DR. GEEK - A KIND OF PUNKY SONG, REMINDS ME OF SOME OF THEIR REALLY EARLY STUFF.
    4. LITTLE JUDAS CHONGO - THIS SONG IS SO SICK!!!!!! ONE OF MY FAVORITE MELVINS SONGS.
    5. THE FOOL, THE MEDDLING IDIOT - THIS SONG IS GREAT. IT IS ALSO THE ONLY SONG I'VE EVER HEARD THAT HAS A KEYBOARD IN IT THAT I LIKE.
    6. THE BRAIN CENTER AT WHIPPLES - GNARLY SONG.
    7. FOAMING - ANOTHER GREAT SONG, A LITTLE DIFFERENT FROM SOME THE OTHER SONGS ON HERE.
    8. THE ANTI-VERMIN SEED - THIS SONG IS DEFINETLY HOSTILE AND AMBIENT.

5 out of 5 stars The REAL Ecclectic Electric.......2004-04-11

I just came into possession of this little gem about a week ago....and I am still recovering. Many people look at this album as a relativley straight-ahead rock album...at least by the Melvins standards .I think most say that out of comparison to their then more recent releases such as "Electroretard" and the its over my head "Colossus of Destiny".And yes compared to them this is indeed a coventional rocker of an album. However it is only conventional when applied as a term to the Melvins universe. While these songs rock harder and groove better than 99% of anything you will hear on the radio this year, they still retain their experimental edge all through the album. Some standout cuts include "Dr Geek"...which for some reason reminds me of Primus...at least in terms of the song structure. It has a loose rockabilly sound matched with a punk fury ,and it is pulled off briliantly."Little Judas Chongo" is absolutely phenomenal.Maybe i make too much out of this song really. Its not the catchiest thing they ever done, but being a guitarist myself, this song just reaches out and grabs my jugular."The Brain Center at Whipples" and the epic like "The Fool, the Melding Idiot" are also both outstanding tracks."Black Stooges" and "Foaming" are good, but I just cant get into "The Anti-Vermin Seed".I like a lot of their experimental ,ambient peices..but that one doesent do anything for me.All in all a very strong release and if you already have a fondness for the Melvins this is a must have album....Hope i helped.

    4 out of 5 stars Thanks....I Needed That!.......2003-02-14

I gotta laff - 'cause The Melvins are the pioneers of a sound that so many other so-called Alternative, Hard Rock, Metal, Punk, bla bla bla bands try so hard to emulate, but simply lack the testicular fortitude and vision to pull it off (or even admit to, for that matter). This is a band with three PLAYERS - guys who really turn it up a notch when it comes to kicking out the jams. They are not afraid to take chances, they are funny, they always keep the listener guessing (expect the unexpected), they don't give a rat's rump about the fast-food crud that is the popular x-generation "alternative" rock music of today (barf!) - Melvins march to the beat of their own drummer - and man o man, Dale C. is one the best you will ever hear...King Buzzo is a 5-string guitar/noise icon with a penchant for covering vintage Alice Cooper Group tunes (i am not worthy)...and Kevin R. holds it together with slide bass (!) - proving to be the most consistent foundation in the "revolving door" of bassists the band has had through the years. Buy this record if you want to purge your soul of all the commonplace sludge being passed around and lauded by the industry onanists as the next big hard rock/punk thing. If u like your rock & roll loud, masterful, freaky & adventurous, and prefer "art" to "pop", this record is for you. Note: you HAVE NOT lived until you've seen these guys live - dunk your head in a vat of molasses & place inside an idling jet engine...voila! (of course, don't try this at home or abroad...teehee)

5 out of 5 stars Nothing too new, but a great album nonetheless.......2003-02-11

Considering that they've existed since 1982, have included more than 5 bass players, and have put out albums for 5 different labels, it's amazing that the Melvins are even still alive to greet the year 2003. One of the most persistent bands in the history of American rock and the near sole survivors of the Seattle Grunge scene, The Melvins are not only still alive, but have managed to release an astonishing 23 albums (and EPs) in their wake while simultaneously maintaining several successful side projects. This being said, HAT (Hostile Ambient Takeover) is a monumental release for the Melvins, being the first new studio album after a two-year maelstrom of archival live and compilation releases. The group's last original outing, the 2000 Trilogy, provided one album for each aspect of the Melvins sound, but where the Trilogy split up the Melvins different personalities, HAT unites them all on a single CD, making one supremely diverse monster of an album. Covering everything from their punk roots, Dr. Geek, to bold new ambient experiments, The Anti-Vermin Seed, HAT acts as an effective summation of the Melvins career thus far. While most bands would regard this as a virtual lack of progress, the Melvins have made such numerous strives in such radically different directions on every previous release that HAT proves to be a necessary and much appreciated compliment to the band's eclectic past. Furthermore, regardless of whether it's pushing the envelope or simply reveling in the classic quirky dirginess that is uniquely "Melvins," HAT displays such impressive songwriting and intense instrumental dynamics throughout that it is an unquestionably enjoyable listen, regardless of motive. A perfect place for a new fan to start and a wonderful reward for longtime diehards, The Melvins have made a brilliant mixture of all their best traits while still leaving plenty of room for growth.

4 out of 5 stars The Original Yellowcard.......2006-04-13

To understand this album, you have to understand that this is not the "Ocean Avenue" Yellowcard. Though they may share many of the same members and the same name, the band you will hear on this album is miles away from the Yellowcard known to people by Ocean Avenue.

This was originally released several years before "One For the Kids," the modern Yellowcard's "debut," if you will. When this was released, Yellowcard was a very talented punk rock band. Too many reviews either say this is a bad album, or the newer ones are. It is simply important to realize that you are not truly talking about the same band. I personally prefer the way they are on this album, but I also liked One For the Kids for what it was (I wasn't a big fan of Ocean Avenue, but that's just how it goes sometimes). So please understand: on this album, you will hear Yellowcard as they were in the late 90s: one of the best punk rock bands around. They had a lot of heart, a lot of energy, and very good lyrics. But as I've seen suggested, I would also suggest checking out the samples on this page to be sure this is really the type of music you're looking for.

If you are a fan of Yellowcard's more recent releases, this may not be for you. On the other hand, whether or not you like their newer music, if you like bands like The Vandals, Screeching Weasel, The Lookouts, the Descendents, or other fast-paced punk, you may want to check this one out.

1 out of 5 stars the worst piece of crap to ever hit music stores..........2005-11-12

i was skeptical when buying this cd. i liked there other 2 cds, but i knew there was a different singer. i thought...ok so it'll be a little different. different was RIGHT. it sucked. song after song of screaming vocals, messy tempos, and pure vanilla, meaning that it ALL sounded the same. what were they thinking? well, at least they've improved by dropping their ex piece of crap singer. and now they're but more appealing. but NEVER EVER even think about buying this cd or you will sincerely regret it.

5 out of 5 stars some good old school yellowcard.......2005-08-15

to this reviewer:"Ugh! This is very bad!", June 11, 2005
    A Kid's Review

"I wouldn't suggest for those who are into Yellowcard's Ocean Avenue (which I am), then DON'T buy this. If you don't believe then listen to those 30-second samples. I hope their next album is not like this. It seems that in 2 years, they almost lost all their talent. Get something else by them-I don't know, just maybe their last two albums. WARNING: THE CD CONTAINS EXPLICIT LANGUAGE (they forgot to put (Explicit Lyrics) beside it, I'm serious, I've seen it in stores and it may not be suitables for persons under 16 years of age.)"

I can't help but point this out....this is not a new cd this a re-release of an old CD back when yellowcard had a different singer named Ben Dobson. Personally I like this better than ocean avenue. It has a better flow and it's not near as poppy, although all the songs are great my favorites are Sue, On the Brink, and Anywhere But Here. I really reccomend this to any punk fan. This is true yellowcard!

4 out of 5 stars This is what Yellowcard should've stayed as!.......2005-08-13

...of course, money is the ruling factor of everything, so if they had stood wtih this type of rock, then they might have just stayed more underground-ish.

This is the Yellowcard that I miss very much. Ben Dobson had "the voice" that made it unique and very different from regular punk rock bands. Their ability to mix super good guitar riffs with violin solos and energetic vocals is just outstanding in itself. Taking that characteristic, Ryan Key easily turned this band from a super energetic punk rock band to "MTV sellouts" (coming from a person that does not like MTV that much).

About every song on this album is flowing with energy and just plain goodness. People who have been introduced to Yellowcard with Ocean Avenue WILL notice a HUGE difference between the current Yellowcard lineup and this one, hence the negative reviews.

It's sad that Yellowcard has changed. At least they have their older albums to be remembered by.

These guys have been helping to mold music as you know it for years. They have clearly influenced countless bands. Their sound is so completely unique that they are in a league all their own. Buy this E.P., buy Lost At Sea and buy Homecoming, you will not regret it. I promise.

5 out of 5 stars They're back in full force!.......2004-07-20

After two stunning and very distinct releases, I couldn't wait for Craig's Brother to release a new cd. Well, it took them four years and some band troubles, but the guys are back with one hell of an EP! It has elements of their earlier work ("bad marriage" sounds like it could have fit well on 'homecoming'), as well as some new sounds and topics, my favorite being "epissdumbology", a song about those fake tabloids that somehow have a large target audience.
I'm surprised that not many people have heard of this great band, but I see that changing very quickly in the near future. Grab this EP and get acquainted with one of the best hidden gems of melodic punk.

    5 out of 5 stars Mindblowing.......2004-06-30

This EP is completly amazing. 5 songs of some of the best melodies out today. If you like melodic punk, you have to get this cd. I got two.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic 2nd group album.......2005-02-28

Big Wy & Suga Buga deliver a solid 5 star classic for their 2nd group CD. Better then their debut as a group "Dirty Money" (which I'd still give 4.5 stars). Packed with 20 songs, and none that I skip, you get almost 80 minutes of true west coast gangsta $h!+. Production is great (from mostly people I never heard of) and straight west coast sounding. Big Rush produced the majority of the songs (11 of them), VMF did 3, Mark Sparks did 2, and Crime Lab, Lil Pops, DJ Fingaz, and Ajahmu did one song each. Guest are on a good deal of the songs, but they all do a goood job a swell. It has 5 classics, 2 near classics, 5 ok songs, and 8 good songs. Suga Buga has 2 solos and Big Wy has 1. Although it says "Snoop Dogg presents The Relativez" he has nothing to do with the CD other then 1 verse. A must have CD for all west coast gangsta rap fans, you will not be disappointed!! Don't forget to check out "Dirty Money" and "Money Respect Money" and if you can find thier mixtape "Hood Mix Vol. 1" and the "Young Soldierz" album which Big Wy was a part of.

    #1 - 7.5 (Suga Buga solo)

    #9 - 10 (CLASSIC -- great beat -- f/ Top Dogg)
    #10 - 8.5 (F/ 6 feet deep -- about a girl from a broken family -- good story)

4 out of 5 stars Tha Relativez Have Taken Over.......2003-01-07

This cd is tight!! For those who have never heard of them?? they were featured on the Dogg Pound 2002 CD on a banging song called "Smoke". The Takeover which is their second debut album provides that westcoast feel to it with classic songs that include:
    - Like that
    - Bounce- ftg YGD Top Dogg
    - Gangsta-ftg Tha Realest- samples "nuttin but a g thang"
    - Maria- ftg Timbaland

These westcoast artists have brought heat to this cd. All the songs are banging and it is a must buy!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Don't Sleep On This One!.......2002-10-25

Homie this cd is tight as he all the way through. There not one bunk song on it. I didn't know who these cats were, I bought it because I seen Snoops name on it. Now if feeling this cd more than Xzbit's new one. My favorite cut are #'s 3,4,5,6,7,11,14,15,17, and 19. I know it will get play on the west but everyone should check this out.

5 out of 5 stars Buy It Or Die!!!!.......2006-04-10

Nothing short of amazing...buy it or die. They didn't even need to win the Takeover Records Sign My Band contest to get signed...they would have been signed because they are awesome anyway. "Still Life" is a great CD...from the first song all the way through the last song. Their distinctive guitar sound is top-notch along with the drums...which ultimately compliment the fine lyrics and optimum vocals by Shawn Harrington. If I had to note my favorites...Flying Blind is a great song that begins acoustically for the first 35 seconds and makes a nice transition fading to electric. Freud Said It Was Cool shows how dynamic they really are with a unique sound accompanied by great lyrics. U-Turn and Stay Awake capture their punk sound and is executed very well. Verona Post just gets your body moving...the song is full of energy. Aces Over Eights is simply amazing along with Awkward Pose...screw it...the whole cd is a triumph and will not disappoint. This debut full length LP is flawless and there is so much more to look forward to from for Strike.Fire.Fall as "Still Life" is a huge success. Buy "Still Life by Strike.Fire.Fall or die...

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-03-16

I can not believe how well Strike.Fire.Fall has progressed. If I could give this a 6 star review I would! Best of luck to Shawn, Dan, Chris, and Paul! WE ARE... PENN STATE!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-03-09

This CD is AMAZING - best song = Aces over Eights. I first heard these guys at a bar at State College Pa. They live in my hometown and they sound amazing. I've told everyone I know about them and their CD proves how great they really are. BUY IT !!!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars SFF = Amazing.......2006-03-08

This album is great. From the opening song "Cadillac" through the funny message in "Ken" and on into "Aces Over Eights" they really put something great together here. I am so happy that I bought this album preorder...now we just wait until they get big, which will happen. GO BUY THIS ALBUM, YOU WILL NOT REGRET.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice sounding album, Love it........2006-03-08

Very good stuff here. If you are a fan of rock lyrics mixed in with a little punk and alternative, then this is for you. SFF has put together a great sound which strays away from your everyday poppy/punky band and on into a new category of its own. A wide range of influences are evident in their debut LP. Listen to them on either purevolume or myspace for an understanding of their talent. Though you can not listen to all of their songs on the respective pages, the entire CD will not dissappoint. Check them out and see for yourself below:

    Album Description

The Finnish legends return with a new ball-breaking CD which looks likely to see them regain their Glam Metal Crown. Joining the new shape H.R. is ex-Electric Boys members Connie Bloom (Guitar's) and Andy 'A.C.' Christell (bass). Michael Monroe's vocals have never sounded better, and together with Andy Mccoy's guitar wizardry and Lacu's solid drumming, that unmistakable Hamoi sound has achieved new heights. Demolition. 2005.

well, I love hanoi rocks old albums, and I love twelve shots, but this album is below there standard, sounds like a decent mike monroe album not a hanoi rocks album, best track is a cover of phil lynotts dear miss lonely hearts and worst is reggea rocker (the worst song they have ever recorded), I really wanted this album to be great, but it's not, sorry
